Boquete’s coffee farms that are part of the Coffee Tour have their doors open so that you can walk around the coffee plantations, learn the production process– from sowing, harvest, and selection of beans until the preparation–and, of course, taste the most exclusive varieties of coffee. Boquete’s coffee farms are located between the 1,000 and 2,100 meters above the sea level (3,280 to 6,900 feet) and, thanks to the rich soil of the region, they produce more than 10 coffee varieties such as Caturra Rojo and Amarillo, Catuaí, Java, Mundo Novo, Pache and, above all, the award-winning Geisha. Here is our list of open door coffee plantations for you to visit in Boquete.

Finca Lerida coffee plantation tour

coffee coffee tasting

The Boquete area of Panama is trying to make coffee tasting in the region equivalent to what wine tasting is to Napa. What this leads to are fascinating tours and even better coffee. We opted to tour Finca Lerida’s coffee plantation (they also have a great hotel). This was the very first coffee plantation ever established in Panama and still produces coffee exported worldwide. The fascinating nearly 3 hour tour demonstrated everything from how the berries are handpicked, to how they are dried in the sun, shelled, stored, and processed. Enjoy wandering the rows of coffee bushes, the ecology of coffee farming, how the plantation is handling new threats of climate change, and finish with with an incredibly unique tasting experience of 6 types. Make sure to try the Geisha type which is especially renowned. Our guide Cesar was incredibly knowledgeable and told awesome stories. Your tour also includes a pastry and coffee in the cafe on site.

Boutique Hotel Finca Lerida

In 1929, Finca Lerida exported to Germany its first shipment of Panamanian coffee. This began Panama’s high reputation as one of best quality exotic coffee producers in Europe, Finca Lerida.

A Norwegian engineer Toleff Bache Mönniche, graduate of the Royal College of Dresden, Germany, participated in the design and construction of the Panama Canal locks’ emergency hatches and the gigantic docks in Colon, after that he traveled to the High Lands of Chiriquí in 1911.   He was looking for a place with clean, fresh air to rest and he found this exceptional spot.  He and his wife moved to Finca Lerida and built his house, completely by hand  in a Norwegian countryside style and built the first Coffee Plantation by gravity in Panama.

The high quality coffee produced in a unique spot in the world: Finca Lerida, nested along the lively skirts of Volcan Baru and the high ridges of the Central Range.  Located 10 km uphill from Boquete, this property used to be half grasslands/half tropical forest yearlong.  Boquete is Panama’s mountainous refuge: Birds chatter symphonically and volcanic peaks yield to a flourishing landscape of bucolic coffee plantations. Just a one-hour flight from Panama City and a drive up a curved mountain road lies Finca Lerida Coffee Plantation and Boutique Hotel.

They offer a historic suite named “Casa Centenario” which was designed and built back in 1908 by Toleff Monniche, taking 10 years of hand.  This cozy old house is conserving the warm Scandinavian style and offers for every room a hammock on its front porch—the perfect spot to sip the property’s own “Geisha” coffee, which happens to be one of the world’s most exclusive blends.   You can also enjoy a charming living room with an old chimney what give a special romantic touch to the Hotel.

The trails of Finca Lerida are ecological paths that lead you through the coffee plantation and tropical forest of Boquete and also easily hiked by guests.  This is the most accessible region of Chiriqui’s High Lands where the beautiful Quetzal bird can be seen thanks to the conservation of the forest

Boquete Panama

The reputation of Finca Lérida is as old as the first shipment of Panamanian coffee exported to Germany in it’s history, in 1929.

From its spectacular landscape sprang a coffee of such high quality, that soon the consumer countries of the aromatic coffee realized that Panama had other unique attractions, beyond the Canal. One of these was, and remains, Finca Lerida.

In 1924, engineer Toleff Bache Mönniche, along with his wife, moved to Finca Lerida. Here he built his house completely by hand in a Norwegian countryside style, and built the first Coffee Plantation by gravity in Panama.

In 1929, Finca Lerida exported to Germany its first shipment of Panamanian coffee, and this began Panama ́s high reputation as one of the exotic coffees of greater quality in Europe.

Finca Lerida is currently managed by the Amoruso Family, who coordinates the appropriate growth process of coffee, protect the lush virgin forest that surrounds the property and offer a genuine stay for all visitors to the Boutique Hotel Finca Lerida that is located in the middle of the coffee plantation.

Finca Lérida is conformed by 5 farms located in the province of Chiriquí in Panama, specifically in the Boquete region. Ranging between 1500 and 2000 meters in altitude, these farms are:

  • Lérida Estate
  • Esplendorosa Estate
  • Amelia Estate
  • El Salto Estate
  • Flora Estate

Among these varieties you will find:

In the main farm, Lérida Estate and in an altitude above 1900 meters, the experimental micro lots with varieties such as the following are found:

  • Orange Bourbon
  • Midget Geishas

THE SECRET OF OUR SUCCESS

Amongst the procedures the cherries go through are;

  • Washed or wet process

Reviews / Hotel

The Finca Lérida Coffee Plantation & Boutique Hotel resides in the town of Boquete, one of Panama’s best destinations for nature lovers. The plantation is surrounded on all sides by lush hillsides and mountains that contain a wealth of plant and animal life. It’s here you’ll also find the popular Barú Volcano National Park.

Finca Lérida was once the region’s most prominent coffee plantation before turning into an eco-lodge. Though they still offer coffee tours on the premises, it’s also now a favorite destination for intrepid visitors who want to experience the rich outdoor tapestry Panama has to offer. The Sendero Los Quetzales is easily the greatest hike in the park while the Río Chiriquí offers some of the best rafting opportunities in the country. The scenery alone makes it well worth a visit.

The hotel itself offers numerous amenities. All of the rooms are located on the ground floor and provide stunning views overlooking the property and mountain vistas. Inside you’ll find comfortable beds, private baths and even a common room with a fireplace. It’s a great place to settle after a long day and meet some of the other guests. There’s also a second building that serves as the main house, which holds older rooms but an excellent library.

In addition to the coffee plantation itself, you’ll also find beautiful gardens on the premises along with a restaurant. Monniche Restaurant serves international food as well as traditional local dishes. The menu was a little pricey, but the food was great. The coffee was, of course, extraordinary. The staff was also exemplary and happy to make suggestions for places to visit in and outside of town.

I would highly recommend a stay at Finca Lérida Coffee Plantation to any of my friends.

Finca Lerida Coffee Plantation and Boutique Hotel

  • Description
  • Only non-smoking Rooms

Finca Lerida Boutique Hotel is a 15-minute drive outside of Boquete town, nestled in a coffee plantation. This boutique hotel offers a gourmet restaurant and luxurious rooms with spectacular views of the surrounding gardens, cloud forests and mountains. Baru Volcano National Park is 4 km away.

Finca Lerida began to export the Panamanian highland coffee to Germany in 1929 and still produces quality coffee today, which can be sampled in the Finca’s café and restaurant. Imagine waking up to a cup of locally grown, roasted and ground coffee, while listening to the song of birds and breathing the clean highland air. The coffee plantation itself is home to over 500 bird species which makes every walk across the property a birdwatcher’s dream come true.

A meal in the house restaurant, consisting of fresh local and international specialties is well rounded off by the excellent choice of wines and the house coffee brewed to perfection. Enjoy that culinary experience on the airy terrace or inside the cozy restaurant while you watch the appearance of the first stars on the night sky.

The comfortable rooms recall with a touch of Scandinavian vintage design the Norwegian background of the Finca’s builder and original owner. For a special touch of history opt for the historical suite (Casa Centenario) which was hand-built by Toleff Bache Mönniche, the Finca’s founder in 1929.

All rooms and suites offer a 42-inch LCD TV with satellite cable channels, safe, deluxe toiletries, Wi-Fi Internet and phone service.

Exploring Chiriqui

Chiriqui’s highlands are deservedly famous, and most visitors head straight for the cool cloud forests of Baru and Boquete, known for its pine forests, rivers, and near perfect climate. The slopes of the misty Talamanca Mountains are habitat for more than 250 species of birds , including Resplendent quetzals.

Guests can enjoy whitewater rafting trips, zip-line canopy tours, horseback riding, and visits to organic coffee farms. Fishing charters—targeting black marlin, sailfish, wahoo, and cubera snapper—can be arranged for half, full and multi-day excursions.

Chiriqui’s diverse microclimates require creative packing. In general, the best time to visit is between January and April. The highlands are characterized by cool evenings, with rain potential from August to November.
