What to Bring?

Biking Outside Barcelona

With a host of highly-rated tour operators in town, balmy weather and an extensive network of bike paths, exploring Barcelona on two wheels is a LOT of fun ! Here’s everything you need to know to get pedalling…

Why Explore by Bicycle?

A bike tour is a great way to see Barcelona, and has numerous advantages over  traditional walking tours . The most obvious is that being on a bicycle enables you to see much more of the city, but those of you who like a little exercise will also appreciate the chance to burn off a couple more calories and keep the oxygen flowing to the brain as your knowledgeable guide regales you with fascinating histories and amusing anecdotes.

The chance to rattle around Barcelona on two wheels will also make you feel a little more independent (and dare we say ‘cool’) than those who’ve hopped on the nearest tourist bus

The chance to rattle around Barcelona on two wheels will also make you feel a little more independent (and dare we say ‘cool’) than those who’ve hopped on the nearest tourist bus – and you can even maintain the moral high ground on environmental friendliness. There’s no carbon emissions generated from pedal power.

The fact that Barcelona is (with the exception of  the odd mountain ) an incredibly flat city with over 300km of bike paths (and more planned) should provide additional incentive to get in the saddle and discover the town’s best attractions .

8 Advantages of Exploring by Bike

  • Barcelona’s warm & dry weather is perfect for biking
  • It’s not strenuous, but still a good work out
  • You can fit in many more sights than on a walking tour…
  • But you are more independent than on a bus / coach tour!
  • Barcelona has 300km+ of cycling paths and many car-free zones
  • The centre of the city is mostly flat (and the hilly tours you can do on an Electric Bicycle!)
  • It’s an environmentally friendly way of seeing the city
  • Bicycle tours tend to be very affordable !

Most of Barcelona’s numerous bike tour companies offer both private tours and group excursions with a guide. As well as catch-all routes that take in the likes of  La Sagrada Familia ,  Barceloneta Beach  and  La Rambla  in one circuit, you’ll also find some exciting alternative tours on offer, concentrating on different themes (like  eating tapas  or football) or taking you to less-heralded, but equally fascinating, districts.

1. Steel Donkey Bike Tours

Looking for a two-wheel ride you will never forget? The Steel Donkey team (the donkey is the national animal of Catalonia in case you were wondering!) offer intimate adventures around the city of Barcelona, riding in small groups of no more than 8 people. Their friendly guides are all Barna locals, with an eye for the fascinating details and stories that others might miss, and a nose for adventure. You won’t get a history lesson on Gaudi, but you might learn a little bit about Catalan independence and see sides of the city that most tourists simply don’t know about, as you spend a unique afternoon uncovering Barcelona’s secrets. There is no fixed itinerary (each guide shows you their personal Barcelona highlights!), but hidden squares, city beaches, side streets, chocolate and  churros , flea markets and forgotten cemeteries are just a few delights you might experience. A simply great tour for people who don’t like to be tourists. 3. Ocean Bikes Barcelona

If you’re keen to see as much as possible while in Barcelona, electric bicycles will take you that bit further than a pedal bike. That’s the philosophy of Ocean Bikes who have created two sensational itineraries for curious explorers: namely their morning Photo Highlights Tour and their afternoon Barcelona Off The Beaten Track Tour . The former is the perfect introduction to the Catalan capital, as it calls by all the most breathtaking sights of the city, such La Sagrada Familia, the Gaudi mansions, and the famous palm tree-lined Barceloneta beach. On this tour you also cross over Montjuic hill, and see the Olympic Stadium, Calatrava’s Needle, the Joan Miro Foundation and several sensational view points – perfect for a few selfies. The more chilled Off The Beaten Track Tour meanwhile is ideal for a relaxed afternoon of cycling and alternative exploring and can be done on a pedal or electric bicycle. Both tours can be combined with a sailing trip from the bike store’s Port Olimpic base! oceanbikesbarcelona.com

So there you have it… plenty of great options to choose from, and no excuses to not get in the saddle. And while you don’t have to be Sir Bradley Wiggins to take a bike tour (my mum has joined me on a couple of the above!), and many tours support young children, basic cycling competence is required. In other words, if you’ve never ridden a bike before, check out our guide to the best walking tours instead!

For a little more on what to bring, plus a couple of suggestion for cycling tours that take you out of the city, keep reading…

What Should I Bring?

Nothing too bad will happen if you rock up to a bicycle tour with just the shirt on your back (and some shorts hopefully), but this is what a boy scout would bring, in order to be totally prepared for a few hours in the saddle:

  • Sunscreen. Be sure to apply plenty to the back of neck, forearms and face.
  • Sunglasses. The light in Barcelona can be oh so bright… you’ll get a headache if you forget these.
  • Sensible footwear. Flip flops on bikes are rarely a good idea.
  • Bottle of water. You’re going to need to rehydrate, possibly quite regularly if it’s scorchio outside.
  • Second layer. Check the weather forecast before you set off, as you might appreciate having a light rain jacket, or sweater, for those times when the legendary local climate lets us down.
  • Camera. Probably best not to pack your DSLR… too clunky and not great way to carry it on a bike. But you’ll want to have a camera of some sort handy for when you stop outside one of Gaudi’s masterpieces, a cool piece of street art or are cruising back to the city via the beach. Your phone or a point of shoot should prove perfect.
  • Address of the tour meeting point. Because there’s always one who doesn’t…
  • Cash. Some pocket change for snacks and souvenirs (some tours stop via cool stores) might come in handy.
  • Backpack. I’d recommend a double shoulder strapped bag as these are much more stable when you’re riding a bike.
  • Lip balm. The Barcelona Life team have very sensitive lips, ok!?

Cycling Outside The City

If you’re a serious cyclist craving some hardcore thigh burn, then check out our  guide to cycling and mountain biking in Catalonia . There’s some amazing countryside to be discovered, whether you’re interested in a day trip or a longer lycra-clad excursion.

For people with normal-sized thighs and fitness levels, there are still a couple of really fun and accessible bike rides that get you out of the city. As a bonus, they all seem to involve wine!

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ll wrap up this post with the answers to your FAQs… and if there’s something we haven’t covered in this article, please ask us in the comments section and we’ll do our best to help!

Is Barcelona good for biking?

Barcelona is the perfect city for cycling, as the weather is warm and dry most of the time, the centre of the city is totally flat, and there are over 300 kms of dedicated bike paths.

Which are the best bike tour companies operating in Barcelona?

Steel Donkey Bike Tours are perhaps the best local Barcelona tour operator, while international companies like Baja Bikes and Fat Tires also have a strong presence in the city. Lovers of architecture might look at Gaudi Bike Tours.

Does Barcelona have a public bike sharing system?

Yes, Barcelona launched a city bike share scheme called Bicing in 2007. As of 2022, there are over 500 Bicing stations. Unfortunately it is NOT available for tourists to use, as you need to be city resident to obtain a Bicing card.

Do I need to wear a helmet when cycling in Barcelona?

By law you are not required to wear a helmet when cycling within the city limits. Naturally, if you don't know the local roads and traffic rules, it can make sense to use one. Most bike rental and tour companies will be able to offer you one for free when you use their services.

More Local Tips!

Confession time! I’ve been blogging about Barcelona since way back in 2009… in other words, apart from quite a few more grey hair since arriving in the city, I’ve got plenty more great advice for you, whether you want to work out which Gaudi buildings to visit , what is the best day trip to go on , or which is the best value Barcelona Card . I am blind and we require a tandem bike to rent. Are there Tandem bikes available to rent?

cycling tours of barcelona

Hi Teresa, yes it looks like several bike rental firms have them. Just doing a Google now for you and it seems Happy Rental Bike have them for example: https://happyrentalbike.com/barcelona/tandem-bike-rental/

' src=

Could you recommend a route if we wanted to do a free-wheel bike tour of these places? And are there places to lock your bikes if we want to go inside somewhere?

One advantage of a bike tour is the guide usually knows the best bike paths etc. to get around, but it is also fun to go free-wheeling. Specific routes I don’t have saved, but I’d try to get out of the Old Town that is bit too crowded with pedestrians to be comfortable for bikes. Poblenou is nice for cycling, although there are fewer obvious sights to see. Eixample is good if you stick to the bike paths and avoid the traffic.

Just found your site- we arrive soon and will be back on line with you after we land! Love the bike tour recommendations – Boston and Amsterdam were epic on 2 wheels – can’t wait to Bike Barna. And, true confession, as we will be in town for St. Pats- the Irish Bar web search got me to your site. Hasta Luego!

Is Barcelona a good biking city?

You bet it is! Barcelona is an absolute gem for cyclists, thanks to its flat terrain, pleasant climate, and an impressive network of bike paths that spans over 200 kilometers. Whether you’re a novice biker or a seasoned cyclist, you’ll find the city inviting with its biking-friendly streets and scenic routes.

Barcelona has invested significantly in making itself a cyclist-friendly city, and the number of people cycling daily is testimony to that. To top it off, you’ll find many places in Barcelona offering bike rentals , making it even easier for tourists to join the cycling fun.

Is it easy to bike around Barcelona?

Biking around Barcelona is incredibly easy! The city’s layout is quite straightforward, and the cycling lanes are clearly marked, ensuring a seamless ride even for first-time visitors. Moreover, Barcelona is reasonably flat, with only a few hilly areas, making it accessible for all fitness levels.

Barcelona also has a public bike-sharing program known as Bicing, which is perfect for short trips around the city. However, do note that this service is mainly designed for residents, and tourists might need to rely on traditional bike rentals.

Is it safe to cycle in Barcelona?

It’s very safe to cycle in Barcelona! The city takes the safety of cyclists seriously, with separated bike lanes and traffic-calming measures in place throughout the city. Plus, the local culture is respectful towards cyclists, which adds another layer of security.

Of course, just like anywhere else, it’s important to follow road safety rules, use hand signals, wear a helmet, and stay alert. This includes for pedestrians, who aren’t always perfect at checking for bikes before crossing bike paths

Remember as well that bike theft can be an issue in Barcelona, so always lock up your bike securely when you’re not using it.

Where can I bike ride in Barcelona?

There’s no shortage of fantastic places to bike ride in Barcelona! From the charming old streets of the Gothic Quarter to the sunny beachside paths of Barceloneta, the options are plentiful. The Parc de la Ciutadella is a great starting point for any bike tour, with beautiful scenery and plenty of paths.

For a more extended ride, you can cycle up Montjuïc Hill for a breathtaking view of the city. If you want a break from urban life, consider taking a bike ride to Collserola Natural Park, a lush green oasis just outside the city.

No matter what your preference, there’s a bike path in Barcelona that’s perfect for you!

Can tourists rent bikes in Barcelona?

Yes, tourists can definitely rent bikes in Barcelona, and it’s a popular way to explore the city! There are numerous bike rental shops scattered throughout the city, offering a wide variety of options from traditional bikes to electric bikes.

You can usually rent a bike for a few hours, a whole day, or even several days depending on your needs. In addition to standalone bike rental shops, tour operators will provide bikes as part of guided or self-guided bike tours.

It’s a flexible, eco-friendly, and fun way to discover Barcelona at your own pace!

Do you have to wear a helmet on a bike in Barcelona?

Legally speaking, helmets are only mandatory for cyclists under 16 years old in urban areas, but they are highly recommended for all riders regardless of age. When you’re biking outside of urban areas and on interurban roads, the law requires that all cyclists wear a helmet.

Despite the legal aspect, wearing a helmet is always a smart choice as it provides essential protection and can prevent serious injuries in case of an accident. Most bike rental shops in Barcelona will provide you with a helmet when you rent a bike.

Can you bike on La Rambla?

Technically, yes, you can bike on La Rambla, but it’s not recommended due to the heavy pedestrian traffic. La Rambla is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in Barcelona, and navigating it on a bike can be challenging and stressful.

If you must pass through La Rambla, it’s better to walk your bike through the crowd to avoid accidents.

There are many other biking-friendly routes nearby that are safer and more enjoyable, such as the beautiful seafront promenade in Barceloneta or the wide avenues of Eixample.

Can you cycle on the pavement in Barcelona?

In Barcelona, cycling on the pavement is generally not allowed unless the pavement is wider than five meters and the pedestrian flow is low. Cyclists are encouraged to use bike lanes and shared spaces instead.

If the pavement is the only option and it meets the above conditions, cyclists should ride at a walking pace and always give priority to pedestrians.

Barcelona has an extensive network of bike lanes and routes designed specifically for cyclists, so you’ll often find it unnecessary and less convenient to cycle on the pavement. Understanding and respecting these rules helps ensure a safe and enjoyable cycling experience for everyone in the city.

We present our 7 favorite Barcelona bike tours with a short description of each. We are rating them on the following benchmarks:

So sit back, relax and enjoy our advice and expertise as we now kick-off our top picks starting with a Quick Comparison Breakdown:

So since this is done, let’s dig real deep into those tours:

1. Gaudi Bike Tours

Gaudi created so many unmissable sights in Barcelona – and on the Gaudi UNESCO Highlights Tour you’ll see ALL of his most famous buildings in a small-group setting.

After visiting La Cascada fountain in Parc de la Ciutadella to learn about the architect’s early life, you’ll continue up, past the Arc de Triomf, to the simply unbelievable La Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s crowning glory, La Sagrada Familia will be the tallest church in the world when it’s finished (172.5 metres) and each of its façades is packed with amazing imagery and stories – your guide will share some of the best!

Next you will check out one of Gaudi’s early works, the Casa Vicens. Oft-overlooked by other tours, this art nouveau masterpiece draws on Spain’s Arabic influences to create a colourful and playful mansion and one of the signature pieces of Catalan Modernisme.

After stopping on a picturesque plaza for refreshments, you’ll make your way to the epic Passeig de Gracia boulevard, where the grandiose mansions of La Pedrera (a building with no straight lines!) and Casa Batllo (an allegory of Gaudi’s proud Catalan roots), stand tall. Gaudi was at his creative peak at this point of his career.

There’s more to come, as you cycle down Las Ramblas and onto a small side street leading to the hospital where Gaudi died. The hospital’s pleasant courtyard is a serene place to contemplate the architect’s legacy.

Gaudi Bike Tours are unique because their 4-hr duration allows longer to dive into the life and legacy of Barcelona’s most famous scion. Meanwhile, the small-group setting and chance to take a break on a cafe terrace make exploring by bike fun and relaxed.

Biking In Barcelona 2

Important information to note: Bicing is designed for locals who have either a Spanish identity card or a N.I.E. which is the card received by foreigners living in Cataluña. So if you don’t have either one, this is not an option for you.

On a budget or want the freedom of being your own guide?

Bicing is a great option for you.

In 2007, Barcelona inaugurated Bicing, which is a bicycle sharing system modeled after similar systems in other European cities. Bicing bicycles are easy to spot around the city. There are many stations where they are parked in a line on bike racks.

The bikes are red and white; therefore, they are unmissable! Users can pick up and drop off the bikes at any of the 421 stations throughout the city. The Bicing app allows you to plan your routes, figure out the best place to pick up the bikes depending on where they are available, and mark your favorite stations.

You can design your own bike tour for you and your friends, giving you more freedom and independence to explore. Click here for some great example routes. When you´re done, simply drop the bike off at one of the stations and be on your way.

Itinerary: You are completely independent with this option, this is great for flexibility, although you are bound to the bike stations and especially in summer full stations in the city centre and on the beach can create some hassle. 3/5.

Family Friendly: Bicing is not a family-friendly option, as all of their bikes are the same size and there are no child seats. 1/5.

Wow-factor: It depends on what you make of it. A good choice if you know the city well, if you are new to Barcelona, finding your way around the city will be a bit of a challenge. 2/5.

Duration: You can ride for up to two hours straight on a bike, after that you have to check your bike out, but you can check right back in!

Price and tour options: The cost is 47€ per year

How it compares in our list: This is your tour in whatever way you choose. It is the ultimate freedom, as you can hop on the bike and explore the city on your own terms. Unlike the other tours in this article, you will not get the knowledge and expertise of a guide.

I am Martin from Argentina and my wife Noemi is from Slovakia. We met twice when we traveled the world and second time I didn’t let her go. Few years past since then. We got married and had a beautiful, bright boy called Noah. Passion for travelling is what put us together and my sense of humour. We love meeting new people and hearing their stories this is why we created this tour. To stay connected to what we love.

We knew the perfect tour didn't exist, so we decided to invent it!

It took us time and a bit of hard work but we believe that what we created is a great experience. We managed to connect the best places of Barcelona in half morning and tasting the best tapas. All you will explore and the love we put in it makes this tour an UNIQUE EXPERIENCE!

1. The Original Barcelona by Bike tour

As in a time line, from the Roman Barcino to the «Super Manzanas» under construction, The Original  starts from the Gothic Quarter , you pedal through its labyrinthine alleys, its squares, its walls, evade tourists, vendors and workers and criss-cross the heart of the old city until entering the Eixample , the neighborhood designed by the utopian socialist Ildefons Cerdà with its modernist buildings, historic bars, modern restaurants, traditional specialist shops to finally reach the unfinished Sagrada Familia . The topographical and cultural highest point has been reached, and after three further explanations, we head down to the relaxed final stretch along the beach and back to the bustling old town. And there it comes to it’s end: “The Original”.

  • Group size:  max.9 cyclists per guide
  • Duration:  around 3 hrs
  • Available:  daily (with advanced booking)

Barcelona by bike is like having a friend who shows you around

2. barcelona by bike night tour.

Why so much fame? Why so much press, so many stories, so many secrets, what’s up with Barcelona at night? Barcelona by bike, after years of empirical research, invites you to a Night tour that humbly tries to answer these questions from the bicycle. Like a web link, where each stop opens a window and another one emerges from it, the protagonist of this tour will be you, your inquieties to explore. Barcelona is alive , dynamic, complex, and so are its nights. Pescadito frito in the bar La Plata, a draft in the El Borne quarter, a cool breeze at the Macba, the hot spot of the skaters, we will stop here and there, how one feels like. As they say in Barna, «sobre la marcha» «on the go».

  • Duration:  3 hrs
  • Starting time: 18h00
  • from 6 persons: 40€ p.p.
  • 4-5 persons: 45€ p.p.
  • 3 persons: 55€ p.p.
  • 2 persons: 65€ p.p
  • Included:  bike guide; bicycle hire, helmet, e-bikes available upon request: 15€

Barcelona is never the same. There is always something going on.

3. panoramic barcelona by e-bike tour.

Set off from the Gothic Quarter , we will cycle up on e-bikes the 177 meters that separate the sea line from the top of Montjuic , or «Mount of the Jews», or as the Hispano-Roman Pomponio Mela would say back in the 1st century AD, «Mons Lovi»s, that is, Mount Jupiter that is, Mount of the»Father of Light». The truth is that from the “Monte de la Luz”, Montjuic, you can have a panoramic view of the entire city, the port, the Eixample, the maritime mountain range and understand why so many soldiers over the centuries, used this vantage point to control the city destination. Barcelona by bike invites you to climb that mountain and discover its history, its castle, its botanical gardens, the site of the 1992 Olympic Games and the 1929 Universal Exposition , enjoy its green and its cultural spaces and end the tour enjoying the views with a cold beer in your hands. Why not?

  • from 6 persons: 50€ p.p.
  • 4-5 persons: 55€ p.p.
  • 3 persons: 65€ p.p.
  • 2 persons: 75€ p.p

Edu regaling guests with his local insight...

Edu clearly loves his job, and it’s easy to see why. Pottering around Barcelona’s back allies on a rather nifty Italian city bike, and showing his guests the many secrets he has garnered after nearly a life time of living in the Catalan capital (impressively, it turns out, he has also lived in China and speaks good Mandarin) is not a bad way to spend your days. Especially if the sun is shining, as it is 300 days of the year in Barcelona. Even the winters are mild here on the Mediterranean, and usually dry during the day, with temperatures still climbing up to 16 degrees on average.

In recent years the city council have made a determined effort to turn their city into a kind of Amsterdam of the south.

But it’s not only the year-round balmy weather that makes cycling around Barcelona such a joy. In recent years the city council have made a determined effort to turn their city into a kind of Amsterdam of the south. In 2018 alone, they added around 50km of new bicycle lanes, and it is now estimated that 95% of citizens live within 300 metres of a cycle path.

The sun always shines on a Barcelona bike tour

The rather natty red and white numbers that make up the city’s Bicing bikeshare scheme are sadly off limits for tourists (you need a Bicing card to operate them, and these annual passes are available for residents only). However, there are no shortage of rental firms willing to rent you a set of wheels, while there are plenty of advantages to booking a professional bike tour led by an expert guide such as Edu.

We preview 6 amazing bicycle tours of Barcelona below…

His local knowledge lifts what would be a lovely ride to something even more edifying, and his under-the-radar itinerary means you don’t feel like you’re contributing to mass tourism (a trend that is unfortunately beginning to blight Barcelona).

His local knowledge lifts what would be a lovely ride to something even more edifying, and his under-the-radar itinerary means you don’t feel like you’re contributing to mass tourism…

“My favourite thing to show travellers is what the real Barcelona looks like, beyond the Gaudi houses, Sagrada Familia or Las Ramblas . Places like a community garden, run entirely by the neighbours, the last and only operating wood-powered oven inside the city where they continue to roast coffee and nuts, or an open-air swimming pool for kids and families in the middle of downtown.”

‘Alternative’ is a bit of watchword at Steel Donkeys where guides are given license to develop their own itineraries and to show guests something beyond the guidebook . Indeed they claim to be one of the world’s first alternative tours, championing off the path tourism as far back as 2010.

“They [our tours] are guided by people that love the city and know a great deal about it. Through us, you will easily discover some of the best most overlooked places in town: from an old brothel, to a hidden park, to the best orxata place in Barcelona,” says Edu proudly.

Exploring the modern Port Olimpic

Another of those people is Mariana, an Argentine who has lived in Barcelona for a decade now, and has zero intention of leaving. Like Edu, she revels in uncovering the city’s lesser known lights.

“I like to show a contrast between the old and the new, the wonderful remnants of medieval and art nouveau times, and the exciting modern developments of the city. We talk about politics, history, art, society and culture. I love every stop, but it is true that I have a very deep feeling for Santa Maria del Mar .”

“We talk about politics, history, art, society and culture. I love every stop, but it is true that I have a very deep feeling for Santa Maria del Mar.”

The point about conversation is salient. Whereas most bike tours in Barcelona ride in groups of 15 to 20 people, Steel Donkeys offers a more intimate ’boutique’ experience, riding in groups of no more than 8 guests, plus guide. On average the group size is just 4 or 5 people, allowing for much more interaction between guide and guest. Their guides do not simply broadcast a prepared speech and then move on to the next stop, they converse, and being part of that conversation turns out to be a lot of fun – not just for the travellers, but for the guides too. Engaging with the travellers is part of what makes the job so appealing to Mariana: “It is very rewarding when the guests ask questions about what I am saying, and when they are well informed of any topic that we speak. It is also very nice when it is an open tour and the integration between the whole group is achieved!”

Whereas most bike tours in Barcelona ride in groups of 15 to 20 people, Steel Donkeys offers a more intimate ’boutique’ experience, riding in groups of no more than 8…

And if the conversation does run dry? Well, it seems both Edu and Mariana can reply on the simple joy of riding along the city’s stretch of urban sands on the way back to the city centre.

“I love to see their faces of enthusiasm when they reach the beach, and at the end of each tour to see their faces of joy, their high energy and their words of gratitude. This for me, is without doubt the best reward and the best moments.”

Practical Details

Steel Donkey Bike Tours run tours every day during high season (April to October), and every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday throughout winter, departing at 10am from their Port Olimpic bike hub.

The itinerary isn’t fixed, but typically you will see some of the Old Town, some of Eixample and modern Barcelona and return to base via the beaches and Mediterranean sea. You’ll normally stop off for a glass of orxata and a pastry, or even some light tapas (all food and drink at your own expense).

The tour last 4 hours (give or take 15 mins), and costs €39 per person. You can book online via their website .

That price includes bike rental (helmet on request) and guide, but any snacks you pay for yourself. It’s slightly more expensive than the average bike tour, but considering you’ll be cycling in a much smaller group, it’s perhaps the best value for money tour on the market.

You can also upgrade to an electric bike for a €10 surplus, and if you can’t make one of their regular departures their private tours are just €69 a person (min. 2 people), so still very affordable.

Not sure if this is the tour you’re looking for? Keep reading to discover all your two wheel options for exploring the Catalan capital…

Steel Donkeys are perhaps the hippest and well-known name in town, but they certainly aren’t the only company you can saddle up with in Barcelona. Let’s countdown the top six tours in (and around) the city.

1. Steel Donkey Bike Tours

These pioneers of local, small group tourism have amazing guides and a relaxed ‘discovering the city with friends’ vibe, which has no doubt contributed to making them one of the must-do experiences in Barcelona. At just €39 per person they are very affordable for a boutique style tour (maximum 8 guests), and they also offer private tours from just €69. www.steeldonkeybiketours.com

2. Ocean Bikes Barcelona

Recently launched, Ocean Bikes also start their tours on the gorgeous revamped Port Olimpic marina, and their fleet of sleek Italian-designed Schiano electric bikes are perfect for ranging over the city. Thanks to their battery power, travellers can sign up for the likes of the Photo Highlights E-Bike Tour which takes in all of Barcelona’s most impressive vistas, from the city beaches to the stunning Olympic Ring and Stadium on Montjuic mountain. Naturally, there’s time to take in the mind-boggling works of Gaudi, such as La Sagrada Familia, as well! Running with an average of just 4-5 guests per tour, the 4-hr Photo Highlights Tour is intimate and good value at €49. They also offer a relaxed afternoon tour, ebike rental, and a sailing option. oceanbikesbarcelona.com

3. Photo Bike Tour

Set up by passionate photographer and traveller, Alfredo, this electric bicycle tour of the Catalan capital is one of the best-reviewed in town. Often led by Alfredo himself, the itinerary takes in the majority of the city’s top sights, like La Sagrada Familia and other of Gaudi’s greatest hits, the Gothic Quarter and the beaches. Thanks to the mobility of the e-bikes there’s also time to get up to the Olympic Village on Montjuic (this would be a difficult climb on a normal bike!). Overall the experience is a bit pricer than average, but most people feel the €65 (+ booking fee) is money well spent for this small-group tour, that takes in all the highlights. www.photobiketourbarcelona.com

Marketed at backpackers and younger travellers, their tours start from just €30, and they ride with a maximum of 15 people. Night rides also available! www.fattiretours.com/barcelona

Alella Wine Tour by E-Bike (Coastal Ride!)

Did you know Barcelona is surrounded by wine regions? Twelve of them to be precise, dotted all around the autonomous region of Catalonia. On this Bacchic bike ride you’ll go all the way out of town to the Alta Alella vineyard , which is about 10-12 kilometres up the coast… so a lovely ride. The ebikes (made by Mercedes Benz) make the distance easy and once you get there you’ll be treated to a tour of the vineyards and cellars, and – as you would hope – a wine tasting session is included in the price. Don’t worry about drinking too much, you’ll get a train back into town. Book via Get Your Guide .

On this site and another – the bike ride to the coastal ride and vineyards never sends you to a link where there is such a trip. I really like this one but can’t seem to find it.

Hi Deborah,

Duncan here, the editor. I’m pleased to say the folks who originally created this tour have recently relaunched it in 2022. I tried it the other friday and was great fun. Amazing hospitality at the vineyard and the bikes and sailing were great too. You can book via Rezdy .

BOOK ONLINE

The steel donkeys experience.

Steel Donkey Bike Tours are the first and only alternative bicycle rides in Barcelona. Unlike with standard tours of the city, you won’t simply be learning about  Barcelona  you’ll be living it too… ride with us and we’ll search out the best patatas bravas in BCN, look around obscure but beautiful attractions like the Hospital de Sant Pau and the amazing neoclassical cemetery of Poblenou, stop off at local markets for delicious snacks or vintage threads, and recount the stories of the city under the shade of palm trees and in picturesque squares.

Unlike with standard tours of the city, you won’t simply be learning about Barcelona you’ll be living it too…

We’re not about fixed itineraries and reciting facts to you which you could read in a guidebook, we’re about going on adventures on our trusty steeds (bikes, but you can refer to them as Steel Donkeys if you like…) and revealing parts of the city which many locals don’t even know about!

No two tours are quite the same, but amongst the cool experiences we might enjoy are shopping for kitsch souvenirs at a local flea market, cycling along Barcelona’s resplendent beach promenade, meeting a legendary stuffed parrot and patron saint, enjoying a refreshing glass of orxata (tigernut milk drink) on the tree-lined Rambla del Poblenou, and exploring the back streets of the Borne district – with its traditional shops, Gothic churches and sordid secrets.

I can honestly say this is the best city cycle tour I have ever been on. I was slightly daunted beforehand about the prospect of cycling around a strange city, but the route we took was largely off road or on quiet back streets. Our guide was fantastic, and knew a lot about the city. It was great to do something a little alternative and he had lots of pithy stories about random things that allowed us to get under the skin of the city. And the cycle back along the playa with the sun setting over the city was sensational.

We aren’t the type to take a tradition tour but this ride was perfect for us. We rode all over Barcelona, saw a factory that recycles city banners into bags. We also had refreshment at a great cafe that is part of a design studio in a former warehouse, rode all over the waterfront, on streets we’d never know, and looked at the cemetery. We were out for about 4 hours, but and the ride was tailored for whatever one would want. Also, we were able to keep the rental bikes for another day and use them to ride to some famous Gaudi sites on our own. Excellent!

Top bikes for both road and gravel!! and with the best possible service and flexibility.

Definitely a recommedation!

A group of friends from the US wanted to do a tour in northern Italy, and we found BCN Bike Tours via a friend of a friend. The pricing was so reasonable when compared to other “luxury” tours, i.e., all-inclusive, that we had concerns of cost cutting. The group had riders from all over the world.

I am in Barcelona for two weeks and prior to arriving, I had researched road bike tours. BCN Bike Tours got very good ratings, so I signed up for a day trip to Collserola and Juan was my guide for the 42 mile ride. A very good experience and I recommend this company.

With BCN Bike Tours you can climb the most mythical cycling. It is a high quality service providing all the support needed like: bike, mechanics, vans, food, hydration, hotels. All in a pleasant environment. They organize everything !!! You just need to ride and enjoy.

Bike tour through the Dolomite's and Alps of Italy. The crew from Barcelona bike tours did an excellent job of making this bike tour a very enjoyable experience with professional photographs! Accommodations, meals and tour support were also outstanding! Recommend them

Great quality bikes and amazing personal service. Juan was a great guide and super fan to ride with. He's got a ton of good recommendations too. Hope to come back soon!

Bike Tour Barcelona: A Story…

My friends and I had been looking forward to our holiday in Barcelona for ages. We only had three in the city before we were going to finish our Spanish trip in Valencia. After a fair bit of discussion and reading online we decided the best way to see the city would be by bike as many forums were saying how cycle friendly the city is. Sean had done a bike tour in Prague and loved it so we typed in bike tour Barcelona into Google and had a look at the options. Near the top of the list was Bike Tour Barcelona. After reading some glowing Trip Advisor reviews we booked it for the following day.

At 1.45pm the following afternoon we went at Barceloneta metro station down by the beach and met our guide. She was a really charming Finnish girl called Noora. She had lived in Barcelona for years and had been working on the tours since the previous spring. We arrived a little early so there was a short wait for the rest of the group to arrive but Noora was very chatty asking where we are all from and how our holidays we going.

When everyone arrived, there were 14 of us in total we took a short walk to the Bike Tour Barcelona office. When we were there we were all given a bike which all had different names inscribed on them! I had Sophie, Sean had Jesse and Emily had Mary Poppins! When we all had our bikes we were lead to the first stop by Noora. It was a lovely route hugging the port Vell around to the Columbus Statue at the bottom of La Rambla. When we all arrived Noora found us some shade under a tree which was great because it was quite hot out! She gave us a brief introduction about Barcelona and the history of the city, then told us the story of Christopher Columbus. I had no idea that Columbus had started all his voyages from Barcelona, that it was the capital of Spain at the time, it was such an interesting account of, what turned out to be, a pretty unpleasant man! One thing that struck me right away was how well Noora engaged all of us in the group. Even though English wasn’t her first language she spoke very clearly and was very engaging and spoke very passionately about the subject.

After we finished there we went on a cycle lane down to a big colour face sculpture. We had seen it on the way down to Barceloneta metro and had no idea what it was but Noora filled us in on the blanks! It was made by Roy Licenstein and was commissioned for the Olympics. She told us a little about how much the Olympic games had done from the city promising to tell us more s the tour went on. Our next stop she took us on a back route through the Gothic area to the Cathedral. It was at this point I thought how thankful we were to have a guide showing us all this and these routes because we never would have found our way otherwise! The cathedral is so beautiful and there is a huge square in front of it where we stopped to listen to Noora’s speech. It was an extraordinary story about a girl in the 3 rd century who rose up angainst the Romans who occupied Barcelona at the time, then her subsequent torture and death at the hands of the Romans and about how her life is the first evidence we have that Christianity had arrived in Spain and that is why the Cathedral is dedicated to her. It was such a moving tale I looked over to Emily at the end and there were tears in her eyes and mine as well!

When we left the cathedral we took another back route to get to the Arc De Triumph. We heard some fun facts about the Arc and other Arc de Triumphs around the world (the biggest one in the world is in North Korea I remember that!) And then the next stop was right next to the Arc which was Park Ciutadella. Cycling through the park was so lovely, there are lots a paths to cycle on then all of a sudden we were brought in front of the most beautiful fountain which were told is called ‘Cascada’ which means ‘Waterfall’ in Spanish. Noora told us the history of the park, why it was named so, which is a crazy story about it being a fortress and it being bombed from a mountainside!

After a little break and a wander around the park we took the next leg up to Segrada Familia, Gaudi’s famous church. It is incredibly overwhelming when you suddenly find yourself underneath that beautiful church, which from certain angles looks like a big sandcastle! Noora told us all about Gaudi and the building process which has been going fro over 100 years! We couldn’t go inside because you need to book your tickets online a day in advance but after we had been given a taster on bike tour Barcelona we all said then and there that were going to go back tomorrow to go and have a look inside! We all had a lot of questions about the church and Gaudi and I was very impressed as to Noora’s knowledge in answering even the most obscure questions!

After Segrada Familia we took a one long road with a bike path all the way down the middle to get to the Port Olimpic for our final stop. Here we heard about what the Olympics did for the city, I really had no idea how much the city changed because of the Olympic games! I don’t want to give away too many spoliers because you should hear them in person but the beaches in Barcelona are man made and all the sand is actually from the Sahara desert in Egypt! It was shipped over and the beaches were built for the Olympics!

Vuelta a España 2024 preview: Full schedule and how to watch men's cycling Grand Tour race live

Discover the key things you need to know about this year's edition of the men's cycling Grand Tour stage race around Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, which starts on 17 August in Lisbon, Portugal.

The UCI World Tour road cycling stage race season kicks back into full swing this weekend after a break for the Olympic Games with the third and final Grand Tour of the men's season: the 79th Vuelta ciclista a España , the Tour of Spain .

This year, it runs from Saturday 17 August through to Sunday 8 September, and will cover over 3,300km (over 2,050 miles) of racing across 21 stages in southern Europe's Iberian Peninsula. The race begins in Lisbon, Portugal , the second time the Spanish stage race has begun in its neighbour after it hosted La Vuelta's first ever international start in 1997, and ends as is traditional in the Spanish capital Madrid .

Of the 21 stages, two are individual time trials, eight are classed as high mountain stages, five as medium mountain stages, five as hilly or uneven stages, and just one as a flat stage.

Sepp Kuss of the USA (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) is the defending champion and returns to lead of his team, looking to become a repeat winner of the race. The three-time champion Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, who won for Visma from 2020 through 2022, is also in the race for Bora-Hansgrohe .

A total of 176 riders from 22 teams will take to the start line in Lisbon on Saturday aiming to make it to the finish line in Madrid. This is what you need to know about this year's La Vuelta.

Vuelta a España 2024 riders to watch

Aside from both Kuss and Roglic, who between them have won four of the last five Vuelta general classifications (GC), there are some strong contenders on other teams, including from home Spanish riders.

INEOS Grenadiers are handing the race leadership to home hope Carlos Rodríguez , while his compatriots Mikel Landa (Soudal - Quick-Step) and Enric Mas (Movistar Team) will also be expected to do well.

It remains to be seen whether Movistar opt for a dual-pronged strategy, with 2016 winner Nairo Quintana of Colombia back in their team. The same can be said of UAE Team Emirates, who have two bona-fide leaders in Adam Yates of Great Britain and João Almeida , who will want to do well on his three home stages in Portugal.

Other GC hopefuls include Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Tokyo 2020 Olympic road race champion Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek).

However, neither the Paris 2024 Olympic road race and time trial champion Remco Evenepoel nor Giro d'Italia and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar are racing.

Key stages of the 2024 Vuelta a España

With just one flat road race stage included in this year's Vuelta parcours, the peloton has a lot of climbing ahead of it over the 21 stages.

Four districts of Portugal and 20 provinces of Spain in nine autonomous communities will play host to the race, which has a total of nine uphill finishes at altitude.

Many of these finishes are well-known in the recent history of the race: the Alto de Moncalvillo, which welcomes the end of Stage 19, made its debut in 2020 on a stage won by eventual champion Roglic; on the very next stage this year the race will end on the Picón Blanco, which made its first Vuelta appearance in 2021.

Other climbs, meanwhile, such as the Lagos de Covadonga, have formed part of many stages in the tour's past – although, for the first time this year, a stage will end on the majestic climb, which sees ramps of up to 16 per cent in gradient.

The nine stages with hilltop or mountaintop finishes are:

  • Stage 4, ending on the Pico Villuercas at 1550m altitude, with an ascent of 14.6km at an average gradient of 6.2 per cent and maximum climbs of 20 per cent;
  • Stage 6, ending in Yunquera on the Alto de las Abejas at 728m altitude, with an ascent of 8.9km at an average gradient of 3.9 per cent;
  • Stage 8, ending on the Sierra de Cazorla at 1056m altitude, with an ascent of 4.8km at an average gradient of 7.1 per cent and maximum climbs of 20 per cent;
  • Stage 12, ending at the Estación de Montaña de Manzaneda at 1488m altitude, with an ascent of 15.4km at an average gradient of 4.7 per cent;
  • Stage 13, ending on the Puerto de Ancares at 973m altitude, with an ascent of 7.5km at an average gradient of 9.3 per cent and maximum climbs of 15 per cent;
  • Stage 15, ending on the Cuitu Negru at 1847m altitude, with an ascent of 18.9km at an average gradient of 7.4 per cent and maximum climbs of 24 per cent;
  • Stage 16, ending at the Lagos de Covadonga at 1069m altitude, with an ascent of 12.5km at an average gradient of 6.9 per cent and maximum climbs of 16 per cent;
  • Stage 19, ending on the Alto de Moncalvillo at 1491m altitude, with an ascent of 8.6km at an average gradient of 8.9 per cent and maximum climbs of 16 per cent; and
  • Stage 20, ending on the Picón Blanco at 1498m altitude, with an ascent of 7.9km at an average gradient of 9.1 per cent and maximum climbs of 18 per cent.

With just a single truly flat stage, this race is not one for the pure sprinters. There is no team time trial on the race this year, and unlike many recent years where the final stage has been a procession into Madrid, the 2024 Vuelta a España ends with an individual time trial , allowing for late changes to the GC standings.
