Among the beautiful and worth exploring paths are the Yingkiong-Tuting-Tsitapuri trail and the Yingkiong-Tuting-Devakota trail that passes through river streams, waterfalls, many Buddhist shrines, and local homes.

You can try swimming, fishing and rafting in the Siang River during the spring and summer months. Rafting in this part of the river is adventurous and passes through the gorgeous forest covers home to tall and thick tree species.

You can raft to Pasighat from Tuting, which runs for over 12km, which is a very popular raft route among adventure seekers.

HOW TO REACH TUTING?

Dibrugarh is the nearest airport to reach Tuting, and Murkongselek is the nearest railway station, but both need long drives to arrive at the town. Alternatively, you can rent cabs or take public buses that frequently run from Pasighat.

GORICHEN PEAK

Although technically it cannot be categorized as one of the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh, hiking to Gorichen Peak is worth adding to your list of adventures if you are a seasoned hiker or mountaineer looking to get atop the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh.

arunachal pradesh pass

A sacred peak and a religious site by many locals in the state, hiking Gorichen is not for beginners. If you are an experienced hiker, though, you should try reaching the summit of this stunning mountain peak located between Tawang District and West Kameng District, towering over at almost 7000 meters high.

There are camping options as well, so you can pick your group and get started by experiencing some of the best 360-degree views of the panoramas of the horizon.

BHISMAKNAGAR

If you love a bit of a blend of history, archaeology, nature, and culture, along with an offbeat destination, Bhismaknagar is an ideal choice.

Located in the Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh, Bhismaknagar is a perfect stop for a few days to get outdoors and enjoy the rugged nature via hiking, biking or walking.

This city was founded in the 8th century by King Bhismak, upon whom the town gets its name. In the Hindu Mythology Mahabharata, he is regarded as the father of Rukmini, the first wife of Lord Krishna.

The town is home to a 12th-century fort Bhismak, constructed using burnt bricks, an engineering and technological feat in this remote state area.

You can visit the ruins of this fort when in Bhismaknagar, from where many artefacts were excavated by the archaeologists now available in the museum.

Apart from relaxing, admiring and taking in the beauty around you, there is not much to do in this pretty village.

This village opens to stunning vistas dotted with snow-capped peaks on all the sides and has only a few households and shops.

Share this post for good karma 😊

Arunachal Pradesh , the city of the rising sun and the farthest northeastern state of India, is bordered by Tibet, Myanmar, and Bhutan. This area of our country is one of those that is entirely untouched and undeveloped but is home to some truly stunning locations.

You can’t help but fall in love with this state and think about the locations to visit in Arunachal Pradesh because of its beauty, which is just enchanting. Because they were opened up by the state and now easily grant all licences, there are many places you may visit and explore with Arunachal Pradesh tour packages.

You must visit this location if you’re looking for serenity, calmness, and something that is still lovely. Then, you’ll have the most extraordinary experiences of your life.

Here are the 8 Unique Places To Visit In Arunachal Pradesh:

1. Namdapha National Park

Namdapha National Park

Red pandas are adorable, don’t you think? A red panda is one of the nicest things you can find in Arunachal Pradesh. They are the sole species of the genus Ailurus and the family Ailuridae that are listed above.

India has roughly 20 locations where you can see red pandas, and these locations work to safeguard and conserve the species. Thus, one of the Namdapha National Park’s protected areas also happens to be among the greatest tourist destinations in Arunachal Pradesh. It is India’s third-largest park and a hotspot for biodiversity.

To reach Lisu Village, you can obtain a local guide from Deban and then hike through the rainforest.

2. Upper Dibang Valley

Upper Dibang Valley

One of the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh is Upper Dibang Valley . It seems a little strange, though.

With a total area of 9,129 sq km, it is the largest district in India but it is also the least populous.

Unusual, huh? The indigenous Idu Mishmis and a few more tribes with Tibetan ancestry control this area. You must get to Anini when you arrive because it is the only location with access to the rest of the nation.

There is a wildlife refuge in Dibang Valley, which is its main draw. The Mishmi Hills Giant Flying Squirrel calls this place home.

3. Talley Valley

Talle Valley

The Talley Valley is among Arunachal Pradesh’s top tourist destinations. You can gain a lot of insights into the ancient tribal culture and the practices that go along with it by travelling the trail that goes to Talle Valley, which is a fantastic adventure in and of itself.

How much protection they provide to their woodlands will surprise you. Pangey Valley, Talley Valley, and Ziro Valley are among the valleys you’ll pass while hiking here.

The Apatanis live in these valleys. Here, people develop environmentally friendly methods for preserving their woodlands. One such tactic is the taboo period, during which no one is allowed to enter or go hunting in the forest.

4. Mechuka Valley

Mechuka Valley

You should be aware of the Losar Festival if you enjoy learning about the many Indian holidays. The Losar festival is held at Mechuka Valley , which is located in the West Siang District.

This valley is one of the most interesting and cleanest places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh because it is consistently well-guarded by the Indian Army and is not polluted. You have the option of staying in government-run lodging or a local resident’s home.

The 400-year-old Buddhist Monastery is another place you can go to observe the historic Buddhist statues.

Bomdila

To truly understand what natural beauty is, you must travel to Bomdila , one of the top tourist destinations in Arunachal Pradesh.

The location of this lovely retreat is 8,000 feet above sea level. As a result, it is a fantastic location with lots of gorgeous spots for everyone who enjoys climbing.

The natural beauty of the area will win you over, and you may stroll through the countryside to obtain the best views of Kangto Peak and Gorichen Peak.

Bomdila Monastery is another well-known tourist destination. There is a local craft gallery just next to that monastery that showcases the finest artistic creations and cultural artefacts made by the Bomdila people.

6. Itanagar

Itanagar

How can the capital city itself be missed when you are travelling to several locations? 350 metres above sea level, in a well-developed municipality called Itanagar .

This city is one of the most fascinating destinations to visit in Arunachal Pradesh thanks to its rich and cultural architectural treasures. You can go to the Ita Fort, which has unique breaks.

Another intriguing location is the fabled Gyakar Sinwi, also known as Ganga Lake. The distance to the city is 7 kilometres. Another marvel is the Jawahar Lal Nehru Museum, which houses the original tribal culture of Arunachal Pradesh.

One of the most stunning and culturally significant destinations to visit in Arunachal Pradesh is Tawang , which is home to India’s largest monastery.

Up until the 20th century, it belonged to Tibet, but it is currently in the Indian city of Tawang. Galden Namgey Lhats monastery is currently the second-biggest in the whole world but the largest in the nation.

The state of Arunachal Pradesh is very wonderful, and it does an excellent job of protecting its flora, fauna, and culture.

Apart from that, you really must see Nuranang Falls and Bap Teng Kang Waterfalls!

8. Sela Pass

Sela Pass

Sela Pass , one of the most stunning locations in the Himalayan panorama, provides the residents of Arunachal Pradesh with a lifeline and is as divine as they come.

The Sela Pass and the Himalayas work together to mesmerize everyone with their mystical beauty.

Sela Pass, one of nature’s most beautiful gifts to the Northeast, serves as a lifeline for the residents of Arunachal Pradesh as it is the only route connecting the state’s Tawang district to the rest of the nation.

Dembuen Village of Anini_Arunachal Pradesh

Located approximately 32 km from Anini town, Dembuen village is one of the must-visit places in Anini. Inhabited by the Idu Mishmi tribe, the village is located in the most gorgeous location. The Dembuen village has a handful of people and the houses there are scattered. The small farmland, granary, and traditional huts are a common scene in the village.

Their granary has a typical style and it is mostly built outside their main house. Unlike the Galo household, there is no separate entrance to the house for females.

S pend Time With The Idu Mishmi People

Anini is dominated by an Idu Mishmi tribe. The distinct cultural identity of Idu Mishmi is one of the major draws to the valley. I had a great opportunity to spend some quality time with an Idu Mishmi couple in their house and apparently, their house is the last house in Dembuen village.

Portrait of a Idu Mishmi woman in Dembuen village

The best part of the visit to the household was that it gave me a rare opportunity to have a close look at their traditional lifestyle and also be aware of the cultural fabric of the Idu Mishmi tribal community.

The Idu Mishmi is a sub-tribe of the Mishmi tribe. They believe in animalism, unlike others. The skulls of Mithun, Yak, Buffalo, and other animals are hung in their house. The head of the family usually does the animal sacrifice on various occasions.

I was surprised to know that the Idu Mishmi tribe always has two kitchens, one for males and the other for females. Unlike others, female members are not allowed to enter the male member’s kitchen. They are still practicing age-old rituals.

I was quite fascinated by their hunter getup and the things they carry while going hunting in the dense forest. The sustainable backpack, traditional hat, dau, and other essentials gave me a sense as to how they are one with nature and have great survival instincts.

The hunting essentials of Idu Mishmi tribe

However, the young generation of Idu Mishmi is not interested in hunting these days as they prefer to go out for higher education. I found it to be a considerable change in the mindset considering their traditional way of life.

Meeting the adorable Idu Mishmi couple literally made my day. Even though we couldn’t communicate due to the language barrier, it never came between the love and warmth they showered upon me. So, if you are a culture enthusiast like me, spending time with the Idu Mishmi tribe should be on your list.

Visit Alynie Village : The Largest Village of Anini

Alynie Village is the largest village of Anini in Arunachal Pradesh

Don’t miss visiting the largest village in Anini. The picturesque Alynie Village is only 20 km from the town. The village has around 55 houses and the total population is 300. Inhabited by the Idu Mishmi tribe, Alynie is dotted with traditional houses with a backdrop of snow-covered mountains.

Dri Valley in Anini , Arunachal Pradesh

It makes all the difference when you are welcomed by the locals and offered traditional lunch in their house. The best part of my lunch platter was that it had a few traditional dishes of the Idu Mishmi tribe.

Traditional lunch was served in Alynie village of Anini, Arunachal Pradesh

I always love visiting the traditional household of locals and I had the perfect opportunity to experience the hospitality of Idu Mishmi. Eating local cuisine sitting by the fireplace in a Chang Ghar (Stilt House) was an experience to cherish forever. The joy of meeting a granny in Alynie was one of the few memorable moments for me.

SHOPPING IN THE LOCAL MARKET

Handmade bags

If you like collecting souvenirs and local products, you can visit the local market in Anini town. One can get the best quality woolens like sweaters, jackets, caps, etc., even in the tiniest shops of Anini market. Moreover, I was quite surprised to find a bakery in the market as well. I couldn’t imagine a bakery in a remote land like Anini.

GO FOR TREKKING

There is no dearth of hiking trails in Anini and around. The virgin land is blessed with the best of nature. In addition, Anini has recently got a lot of attention for the Seven Lakes Trek . The highland trek has been getting a lot of limelight for the right reason.

The untouched beauty of these lakes up in the mountains compels you to take the untrodden path in Mishmi hills. The pristine calmness and vast wilderness have been giving wanderlust to travelers lately.

Scenic Dri river in Anini, Arunachal Pradesh

As I traversed through the vast land, I was told that there was another 3-Lake hiking trail which is at a moderate level. This newly discovered trail leads you to the densely forested hills and can be completed in 3 days.

Dri River bank in Anini

The best part of these trails is that they have not been explored by the outside world till now. The path is only taken by the locals so far. Imagine walking on a path not trodden by many and experiencing unseen parts of Anini with your naked eyes.

PARAGLIDING IN ANINI

The pilot is taking a test flight in Anini, Arunachal Pradesh

I was in Anini on invitation by Arunachal Pradesh Tourism with the Association of the Paragliding Association of Arunachal and Holiday Scout . The PAA (Paragliding Association of Arunachal) was scouting perfect spots for Paragliding in different locations in Arunachal Pradesh and Anini was one of them.

The Paragliding Association of Arunachal has been doing great in providing a national platform for the Paragliding community in Arunachal Pradesh. Moreover, the association has also been encouraging both males and females to become paragliding experts from the region.

So, the best part of traveling with a group of paragliding experts is that you get to learn the nuances of this adventure sport and realize how paragliding can open new avenues in promoting tourism in a big way.

Successful landing of the test flight in Anini, Arunachal Pradesh

While doing test flights in Anini, there were 9 successful take-offs and landings recorded which was absolutely commendable. It will certainly open an excellent adventure tourism opportunity in Anini in the coming days.

The president of the PAA (Paragliding Association of Arunachal), Mr, Vijay Sonam, and the Paragliding Expert from Sikkim, Mr. Raju Rai from Adventure Zone are two stalwarts who made this happen in a remote location like Anini.

The Best Time to Visit Arunachal Pradesh for an Unforgettable Trip

Arunachal Pradesh, nestled in the Himalayas in northeast India, is a breathtakingly beautiful destination with lush green forests, towering mountains, gushing waterfalls, ancient monasteries, and diverse tribal cultures. Planning a trip to Arunachal Pradesh can be exciting but also confusing as the best time to visit this stunning region depends on what you want to experience.

This comprehensive guide takes a deep dive into Arunachal's seasons, weather, and major events to help you decide the ideal time for your memorable visit.

Arunachal Prades

Overview of Arunachal's Climate and Seasons

Blessed with incredible natural beauty, Arunachal Pradesh experiences significant variations in weather and temperatures throughout the year. This distinct seasonal pattern directly impacts the best time to visit for particular activities or experiences.

The state has four primary seasons:

Summer (April - June) - Warm and humid with average highs around 25°C. Occasional thunderstorms.

Monsoon (July - September) - Heaviest rainfall with high humidity. Temperatures range 15 - 22°C.

Autumn (October - November) - Pleasant weather with clear skies. Daytime temperatures of 15 - 20°C.

Winter (December - March) - Coldest months with freezing nights and chilly days of 5 - 15°C. Snowfall in mountainous areas.

Keep these yearly patterns in mind when deciding when to visit different parts of Arunachal Pradesh. The best time may differ for places like Tawang or Ziro.

Visiting During Monsoon Season

The monsoon months of July through September bring heavy rain across Arunachal Pradesh. Is this a good time to visit?

The pros of visiting Arunachal Pradesh during the monsoon include:

Lush greenery and blooming wildflowers across the landscape.

Sparking waterfalls like Nuranang Falls transformed by heavy rains.

Pleasant daytime temperatures around 22°C despite humidity.

Fewer crowds at attractions like Tawang Monastery.

Opportunity to witness monsoon festivals like the Siang River Festival.

However, the cons of visiting during the rainy season are:

Landslides and flooding can block roads and highways.

Cloudy skies may obstruct views of the Himalayan peaks.

Outdoor activities are restricted due to damp conditions.

Rural areas can be difficult to reach due to muddy terrain.

If you don’t mind getting wet, the atmosphere during monsoon can be magical. But be prepared for potential travel delays or disruptions.

Tawang

Exploring Arunachal Pradesh in Winter

The cold and dry winter months from December to February offer a completely different experience in Arunachal Pradesh. Is this the right time to visit?

Advantages of visiting Arunachal Pradesh in winter:

Crisp clear skies give unobstructed views of snow-capped peaks.

Pleasant daytime temperatures around 15°C despite cold nights.

Prime time for trekking with fewer leeches on the trails.

Traditional festivals like Losar and Khan bring cultural displays.

Lower rates and fewer crowds at hotels and attractions.

However, the downsides of a winter visit include:

Remote mountain roads can be disrupted by snow and ice.

Many rural attractions are inaccessible due to heavy snow.

You'll need to pack heavy winter clothing and gear.

Frigid temperatures drop well below freezing at night.

If properly prepared, winter can be an ideal time to visit Arunachal Pradesh for the beautiful clear skies, cultural festivals, and reduced crowds. Just confirm accessibility before traveling to remote areas.

Best Season for Outdoor Activities

If you're visiting Arunachal Pradesh for adventure activities like hiking, rafting or wildlife viewing, the autumn and early winter seasons offer prime conditions:

Trekking - The autumn months of October and November provide pleasant daytime temperatures along with post-monsoon clarity for trekking around places like Tawang. Leech risk is also lower than during the rainy season.

Rafting - The melting snow swells rivers for exciting whitewater rafting on the Siang, Subansiri, and Kameng Rivers from March to May. November is also a good time for rafting after the monsoons.

Wildlife viewing - Your odds of spotting tigers, red pandas, snow leopards, and other rare wildlife are best from November to February in sanctuaries like Namdapha National Park. The cooler weather keeps animals active.

While outdoor activities are possible year-round, autumn offers ideal weather conditions for most pursuits in Arunachal Pradesh.

Key Festivals and Events

Arunachal Pradesh's vibrant tribal culture comes alive in numerous festivals held throughout the year. If you want to time your visit around a special event, here are some top options:

Losar Festival (February) - Marking the Tibetan New Year, Losar is hugely celebrated in Tawang with dancing, prayers, and special foods.

Siang River Festival (March) - Held in Pasighat, this festival showcases tribal culture through music, cuisine, arts, and more.

Mopin Festival (April) - The harvest celebration of the Galo tribe in Arunachal Pradesh's central region.

Solung Festival (September) - One of the most important festivals for the Adi tribe held near Pasighat.

Diwali - The festival of lights celebrated across India also brings festivities to parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Visiting during one of these major events lets you experience Arunachal Pradesh at its cultural best with unique foods, costumes, rituals, and entertainment.

Best Times by Month

If you need to plan for a specific month, here's an overview of the weather and travel conditions in Arunachal throughout the year:

April - Warm spring weather with occasional thunderstorms. Roads are clearing from winter snow. Low-season travel rates.

May - Conditions warm up with summer's arrival. Rhododendrons start blooming at higher elevations.

June - Monsoon rains begin. High humidity but still pleasant for the Tawang Festival. Leeches are a risk for trekking.

July - Heaviest rainfall. Clouded views but lush landscapes. Siang River Festival.

August - Continued monsoon downpours. Travel delays are possible but the atmosphere is magical.

September - The rainy season tapers off by late September. Solung Festival celebrations.

October - Post-monsoon clarity reveals Himalayan vistas. Mild weather is ideal for most activities.

November - Crisp and sunny autumn weather. Fewer crowds. Great for trekking.

December - Temperatures drop sharply. High season begins with the Losar Festival.

January - Coldest temperatures but sunny skies. Hotels get booked up.

February - Still very chilly. Roads start reopening to remote areas. Losar celebrations.

March - Daytime warming as winter ends. Melting snow swells rivers for rafting.

How many days are enough for Arunachal Pradesh?

To properly explore Arunachal Pradesh's top attractions like Tawang Monastery, Ziro Valley, and Namdapha National Park, you'll need at least 10-15 days. With diverse landscapes and scattered attractions, Arunachal requires more time than more compact states. For a more relaxed trip with day hikes, rafting, and cultural experiences, plan for 20 days or longer.

How much does a trip to Arunachal cost?

A mid-range 10-day trip to Arunachal Pradesh for one person costs around 30,000 to 40,000 rupees including accommodation, transport, food, and activities. You can limit costs by staying in budget hotels, using public transport, and avoiding expensive treks. With a luxury or adventure-packed itinerary, costs can exceed 60,000 rupees per person.

Which month is snowfall in Arunachal Pradesh?

The higher mountainous regions of Arunachal Pradesh like Tawang begin seeing light snow in November which increases through December to February. The winter months from December to early March are the peak snowfall season, though accumulation varies based on elevation and storms. Lower areas may see dustings of snow while passes get buried in multiple feet.

Plan Your Trip at the Best Time

Arunachal Pradesh offers incredible diversity in landscapes, activities, and cultural events across its different seasons. Consider your own interests, then consult this guide to help select the ideal time to visit.

The comfortable temperatures and post-monsoon conditions from October to November are ideal for most visitors. But Arunachal Pradesh has something amazing to offer no matter when you choose to explore this beautiful northeast Indian state.

Just be sure to confirm accessibility, pack proper gear, and time your travels around the weather patterns and events for a trip you will never forget.

When you visit Pankang Teng Tso Lake, you'll be greeted by the peaceful sound of the calm waters, meandering clouds, wet snow-covered forests, and the sweet chirping of birds. To get to the lake, you'll take a picturesque 17-kilometer road trip amidst the serene white backdrop of the snow-covered mountains. And if you're feeling adventurous, you can also visit the nearby Sangestar Lake, which is located only 47 km away from Tawang.

What makes Pankang Teng Tso Lake so special is that it offers two distinct experiences. During the winter, the surroundings are cool, quiet, and covered in fluffy white snow, while in the summer, the lake transforms into a vibrant environment with the blooming of blue lapis flowers.

Bum La Pass

Bumla Pass:

Bumla Pass is like a hidden treasure tucked away in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. If you're looking for an off-beat destination that is breathtakingly beautiful, then you can't go wrong with a visit to Bumla Pass.

The pass is way high at over 15,000 ft, so it stays covered in snow for most of the year. But don't worry, because the road leading up to it is awesome! But the drive up to Bumla is breath-taking, taking you through sleepy little towns and some of the most stunning lakes you'll ever see.

Oh, and speaking of unforgettable experiences, you can't miss Guru Nanak Devji’s Gurudwara on your way to Bumla. This is where the legendary Guru Nanak Devji stayed when he was returning from Tibet, and it's such a peaceful and serene spot. Take a moment to soak in the wisdom of the great Guru.

And on your way up, keep your eyes peeled for wild yaks! These majestic creatures are a common sight in the region; they're impressive. They're massive, with shaggy hair and huge curved horns. You'll want to snap some pics and admire them from afar.

But something you might not know about yaks - they're a vital part of the local culture. Yaks have been used for centuries by the people living in the region for transportation, food, and clothing. They're incredibly hardy animals, able to survive in the extreme cold and high altitudes of the Himalayas. And their milk, butter, and cheese are staples of the local cuisine.

So, if you're heading up to Bumla Pass, keep an eye out for these amazing creatures. They're a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the region and a symbol of the resilience of the people who call it home.

Don't miss out on the chance to witness the natural beauty of Bumla Pass and get a glimpse of the local way of life. Trust me; it's an adventure you won't soon forget!

On the next day in Mechuka, we will brace towards the Yarlung Army Camp. It is the final point before the Indo-china border where civilians are permitted to enter without any special permission. Here you can meet the Indian army and hear brave stories about them.

Note: Taking photos and shooting videos is restricted in the area.

On the back way from Yarlung camp, we can stop at a small Hanuman temple. Here you can find the naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Thenceforth, drive to the Gurudwara to pay your regards. This Gurudwara has a prayer hall, Langar, and a museum. It was established and managed by an Indian army to commemorate the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his journey to Tibet between 1516-1517.

Across the Gurudwara, there is a Guru Nanak Taposthan known to have impressions of Guru Nanak Ji. To enter Taposthan, you need to pass through a narrow passage in the mountain that opens into an enchanting forest by the riverside. And there is a myth that if you are a sinner, you will fail to pass the passage. After spending some time at the riverside hearing the peaceful stem of the river, head back to your stay in Mechuka.

Located crossing the Yargepchu River is the Dorjeeling Village, which has scenic mountain views. It will roughly take 20 to 30 minutes to reach Dorjeeling from Mechuka. Arunachal Tourist Circuits Map

If you have any idea about Arunachal Pradesh, you are probably aware of these 12 Arunachal Tourist Circuits. Even if you are not, just know that Arunachal Tourism has officially defined these circuits depending on geographic locations across this state. Apart from being vast and diverse, Arunachal is also remote and most of the areas have limited infrastructure. It is practically impossible to cover the whole state in one go and that is why it has been divided into circuits so that you can plan one at a time.  I intend to gradually explore and document every circuit in detail. But as of now, let us have a quick look at them.

The thing with these circuits is that the communication is not as simple. There is no direct connectivity between many of these circuits although they look close in the map. For instance, if you have to go to Ziro from tawang, you have to first come back to the plains of Assam, drive along the highway for a while, and then enter Arunachal again. This is why these circuits help you plan, although personally I would have slightly chnaged the way they were arranged. I generally target 1-2 circuits in one trip.

12 Tourist Circuits of Arunachal (+1)

1. tezpur-bhalukpong-bomdila-tawang (shergaon-rupa).

This circuit needs no introduction. This is probably the most famous region in Arunachal Pradesh. Bomdila-Dirang-Tawang route has been popular for a while with the friendly Monpa population, Buddhist Monasteries, high passes, and lakes. But there are other things in the peripheries, such as the Shergaon-Rupa circuit, that deserve more coverage. Also, this region is a paradise for hardcore bird watchers with the likes of Eagle’s Nest and Manda La. Apart from Monpas, there are other eclectic communities here like Sherdukpen and Bugun.

I have already made a detailed post about the Tawang Circuit .

2. Tezpur-Seijosa(Pakhui)-Bhalukpong-Tipi-Tezpur

This is adjacent to the circuit above but it is more it is a more untouched area dominated by Pankhui (Pakke) tiger reserve. Some tourist facilities have come up near Seijosa, at the edge of the forest, and it is also good for birding, especially Hornbills. It is generally inhabited by Nyishi people.

3. Itanagar-Ziro-Daporijo-Aalo-Pasighat

I guess this circuit was thought of during the early days of planning because it covers a vast area and covers elements from multiple circuits. Itanagar has a few things but it is more of a big city. The main attraction here is Ziro, the valley of the Apatanis. The music festival has made it famous but that is more of a distraction rather than the real thing. From Ziro you can also for treks such as the Talley Valley Trek. Daporiji, Aalo, Pasighat, etc are growing towns but you will find interesting villages if you venture out. Another new attraction not specifically mentioned in this context but is in the same area is Basar, dominated by Galo people. Another place I can think of is Malini Than, which is a temple and an archaeological site on the border and is related to the ancient kingdoms of Assam.

4. Doimukh-Sagalee-Pakke Kesang-Seppa

Yet again, this circuit is barely touched and there is limited information available. These are mostly n the East Kameng District (As opposed to West Kameng, which covers Curcuit 1). This region also touches the Pankhui Sanctuary mentioned in Circuit 2, but on the northern side. The main ethnic groups here are the Akas, Bangnis(Nyishi), Mijis and Puroiks (Sulung).

5. Ziro-Palin-Nyapin-Sangram-Koloriang

Now, Ziro here is a famous tourist destination as discussed in circuit 3. But the region beyond that is completely untouched and frankly, I have never met anyone who has even been to Koloriang. This does make it an interesting proposition. Maybe I will make it someday. Beyond the Apatanis of Ziro, you will come accross Nyishi, Bangru, and Puroik people.

6. Daporijo-Taliha-Siyum-Nacho

These are located in the Upper Subansiri district dominated by Tagin and Galo people. Apart from Daporijio, the remaining places here are again not explored much.

7. Aalo-Mechuka

This is a more popular circuit. Aalo (Along) is dominated by Galo people and was one of the better-known towns in the state. Mechuka beyond is located on the banks of Siyom River near the Tibetan frontier. It was remote but in the last decade it has been developed as an adventure sports destination and is very popular nowadays. Mechuka is dominated by Buddhist Memba people.

I have an old post on Mechuka .

8. Pasighat-Jengging-Yingkiong-Tuting-Galling

This is the epic route along the Siang river. Lower areas are dominated by Adi people while you will find others such as Idu Mishmi, Khamba and Memba as you go along. The population in the upper areas near the border are Buddhist and it touches the iconic Beyul of Pemako region which has mythical signifance for Tibetan Buddhists. Some extreme 3 week treks can also be done here. In spite of all these, this region remains barely explored and few have made it to this frontier.

9. Dibrugarh-Roing-Mayudia-Hunli-Anini

This is another circuit which is not well-explored but has begun to grow already. This is the Dibang Valley dominated by Adi and Idu Mishmi people. Roing is more of a plain area on the border of Assam. Mayudia beyond Roing. It is a moderately high pass where it snows in the winter and attracts visitors from the plains of Assam. But the real attraction starts after Mayudia, as you reach Anini. There are scores of trek routes and high altitude lakes beyond Anini that are only beginning to attracct eyeballs. Dambuk (that place with the Orange Festival), is also a short dversion from here. This circuit can only grow in the near future.

I once went there but only made it to Mayudia. Nevertheless I made a Roing Anini Guide .

10. Tinsukia-Tezu-Wakro-Hayuliang-Kibithu-Kaho-Dong

This is the easternmost part of Arunachal, and also of India. That means this part receives the first rays of sun and this is why people now go there on New Year’s eve. This stretch follows the Lohit River.  These areas are inhabited by Adi, Meyor, Khampti, Singpho and Miju Mishmi people. The remotest corners border China and has significant army presence.

11. Margherita-Miao-Namdapha-Bijoynagar

This circuit in Changland district is mainly dominated by the Namdapha National Park, which is a dense rainforest. You can hike through the jungle for several days and if you have time, you cna reach Bijoynagar, which is practically among the remotest villages in India as you need to hike through the jungle for more than a week to reach it! This area is inhabited by Lisu and Singhpho people, as well as some Chakma settlers.

Namdapha is well-known among wildlife lovers yet has not been explored well due to sheer remoteness and challenging terrain. I have been to Namdapha but it was not a very successful trip. You can club it with some other wildlife attractions in the bordering areas of Assam such as the Dehing Patkai and the Dibru Sailhowa National Parks.

12. Jairampur – Manmao- Nampong – Pangsau Pass

This is another interesting area that is beginning to grow, especially after the introduction of the Pangsau Pass Winter Festival. This pass was actually an ancient route connecting NE to Myanmar in the ancient times. During WW II, the iconic Stillwell Road (Ledo to Kunming Road) was built around this region. This area, especially the border town of Nampong, is inhabited by Tangsas and is becoming an internationa trading hub. Some WWII sites such as war graves etc can also be foudn scattered in this region.

13. Tirap & Longding

I am including this additional circuit which was not officially mentioned. These include the Tirap and Longding districts bordering Mon district of Nagaland on one side and the previous Circuit No. 12 on the other. This area is ihabited by th elike of Nocte, Wancho, Tangsa, & Tutsa people. This region has not been explored well but historically as well as in terms of natural and ethnographic delights, there is much more to be seen.

15 reasons to visit Arunachal Pradesh & Assam | Northeast of India guide Part 2

Assam travel guide

Home » India » 15 reasons to visit Arunachal Pradesh & Assam | Northeast of India guide Part 2

The northeast of India is unique in its own way from the rest of the country. The geographical distance from the mainland gives this region a seclusion which contributes to their unique identity. A lot of these states have thriving tribal cultures which are centuries old. It is a good sign that the isolation helps them nurture their heritage with a greater passion unlike the modern way of life which pervades cities and towns of mainland India.

In continuation with Part 1 of the Talk Travel App Northeast India guide, w e will talk about destinations in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in part 2 of the northeast of India travel series.

Permits to visit the Northeast of India

Visiting any of the northeastern states requires some sort of permit issued by the Government of India. Get a permit beforehand as you do not want to waste time procuring the permission to enter when you are on your way. Both domestic and foreign visitors need a permit to visit. Places are remote here and its people are very protective of their heritage. Places are not easily accessible here as the terrain is hilly and full of forests. This seclusion gives it a touch of exoticism.

How to travel to Arunachal Pradesh?

Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and it does not have an airport of its own.

The nearest is the Guwahati International Airport in Guwahati and Lilabari Airport in Ujjalpur in Assam. A few airlines fly daily to this airport from major Indian cities like New Delhi , Mumbai , and Kolkata.

They are around 70 km away from Arunachal Pradesh and you can take a bus or a taxi to reach Arunachal Pradesh. There is also a helicopter service to drop you in Itanagar from Guwahati for people with permits to travel for a price of around 4000 INR (60 USD).

There are is a direct train from New Delhi to Naharlagun, which is 15 km outside the capital of Assam. There is another direct train from Guwahati which plies every day to Naharlagun.

There are national highways that connect Arunachal Pradesh from major metros like New Delhi and Kolkata. The distance is too long and you can easily get exhausted. Instead, take the train or the flight.

12. Molai forest

The-Forestman-of-India

Pic courtesy:  Donate Your Sweat

About four decades ago, this stretch of land was dry and barren due to excessive deforestation. Payend came across a bed of dead snakes on the shores of the river due to immense heat in the region. Payeng was so heartbroken at this sight that he took it upon himself to plant a tree in this barren land and today it is a tropical forest reserve. Molai Forest is an area of 1,360 acres or 550 hectares. Wildlife flourishes in this forest with elephants, deer, rabbits, apes, and even tigers.

13. Temples in Assam

If you would like to indulge in some spirituality in your holiday there is the popular Umananda temple and Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. Both attracts thousands of Hindu pilgrims who throng this place to offer prayers.

14. Historical places in Assam

The Talatal Garh is located in Rangpur in the upper regions of Assam. This palace has an architecture very different from what we observe in the rest of India. This palace belonged to the Ahom kingdom of the Brahmaputra valley which ruled this land between the 13th – early 19th century. Other places of interest are the ancient ruins of Rang Garh and Kareng Garh.

15. River cruise

To appreciate the mighty Brahmaputra which flows here in abundance, head on an adventurous river cruise for a week. On this trip, you will explore the Kaziranga National Park, learn about Assamese culture and its people.
