Virgin Voyages finally is starting up cruises out of Miami after more than a year of delays

Gene Sloan

The much-awaited start to Virgin Voyages sailings out of Florida finally is at hand.

After a series of delays that pushed back its worldwide debut by more than a year , the much-ballyhooed new cruise brand backed by Richard Branson today will kick off its first sailing with paying passengers from Miami -- its initial base for North American operations.

The four-night voyage will take place on the line's first ship, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady , and feature calls at Nassau in the Bahamas and at the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It'll be the first Virgin Voyages sailing anywhere in the world other than a brief series of short trips out of Portsmouth, England, in August that were available to U.K. residents only.

Originally scheduled for early 2020, the debut of Virgin Voyages has been one of the most anticipated cruise industry events of the past few years.

Since plans for Virgin Voyages (initially called Virgin Cruises) were first announced in 2014, the brand has been promising to shake things up in the cruise world with a lively, adult-focused onboard experience that it has said would be unlike anything else in cruising.

Specifically, the line's ships -- in addition to Scarlet Lady, three more are on order -- have been designed to be fun and hip in a sophisticated, adult-oriented sort of way.

Notably, Scarlet Lady offers lots of stylish, adult-oriented nightspots and bars promising a hopping scene late into the night as well as a tattoo parlor , drag queen brunches and a colorful karaoke lounge . Passengers will be able to shake their phones to have bottles of Champagne delivered to wherever they happen to be standing on board.

Unlike some other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages also is eschewing buffets, dress codes and big Broadway-style theater shows. In place of the latter, the line is promising such entertainment as interactive dance parties, DJ sets, "microplays" and late-night games of dodgeball.

Still, perhaps the biggest differentiation between Scarlet Lady and the cruise vessels operated by the biggest cruise lines is that it doesn't have a single venue designed for children. That's because the ship has been purposely built as a kids-free zone , with no passengers under the age of 18 allowed on board.

While often dubbed the "cruise line for millennials" in media coverage, Virgin Voyages was designed to appeal to not just young adults but older adults who are "young at heart," executives have said recently.

In an interview with TPG last week , Virgin Voyages president and CEO Tom McAlpin said the average age of passengers on Scarlet Lady's first sailings in the U.K. was "in the 50s." Some passengers were in their 60s and 70s, he said.

McAlpin suggested Virgin Voyages was a line for adults of all ages who want to have a good time in an adult-focused atmosphere that isn't full of kids and isn't stuffy or formal.

Related: Why you've got it all wrong if you think Virgin Voyages is just for millennials

"I can have a more cool, hip pool party without screaming kids," McAlpin said, explaining the no-kids policy. "I can get in the elevator without kids getting in there and pushing all the buttons, and [the age limit means no] screaming teenagers running down the halls at two o'clock in the morning."

Virgin Voyages isn't the first cruise line to tout adult-focused ships where no kids are allowed . A handful of other lines such as Viking and the U.K.'s Saga Cruises have similar policies. But those lines offer a more traditional cruise experience aimed at older travelers.

The world's biggest cruise lines including Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line , meanwhile, draw large numbers of families with children and cater heavily to families with such onboard attractions as go-kart race tracks, surfing pools and laser tag courses .

Scarlet Lady initially was scheduled to sail its first "sneak-a-peek" voyages with paying passengers out of Miami in March of 2020. But Virgin Voyages delayed the ship's big reveal party in the city that month after the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic. It subsequently delayed the vessel's debut five more times.

All of the delays were blamed on COVID-19, which shut down most cruising around the world for more than a year.

Like the debut of Scarlet Lady, the debut of the line's second vessel, Valiant Lady, also was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled to begin sailing this year, it's now on track to begin operating in May of 2022.

Valiant Lady initially will sail seven-night voyages in the Mediterranean out of Barcelona.

Scarlet Lady is scheduled to sail year-round from Miami, offering a mix of four- and five-night voyages to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Do you or your Sailors have any questions that need answering before the voyage?

Yes, your service dog is permitted on board. Service dogs are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, such as guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling wheelchairs, etc. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals and will not be welcomed onboard. While in public areas, service dogs must be on a leash, harness, or other restraining device. Due to health regulations, service dogs are not permitted in pools, whirlpools, or spas. Care and supervision of the service dog is the sole responsibility of the owner. Our ships will not provide food or care for the dog but will provide designated service animal relief stations onboard that can be set up on Deck 7. Service dogs may not be left unattended in the cabin.  Virgin Voyages reserves the right to remove or exclude a service animal if it is out of control and its handler does not take effective action to control it, it is not housebroken, it poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others, or it is disruptive while on board.  Damage to cabins or our ship caused by a service dog will be charged to the handler/occupant's account.   For more information on service dogs in the United States, we invite you to visit the U.S. Department of Justice Service Animal FAQs .

In keeping in line with the rest of the travel industry, we have removed all vaccine and testing requirements.

Virgin Voyages is committed to providing a safe environment for our Sailors and Crew and reserves the right to deny boarding to any persons convicted of certain felonies, including but not limited to: aggravated physical and/or sexual assault, armed robbery and related offenses, and any other violent crimes.  Virgin Voyages also reserves the right to access public records containing information about any felonious convictions as part of its Sailor screening process, and to cancel a booking and/or deny embarkation at any time to any individual who has been convicted of these crimes. Yes, our ships have specially designed cabins for Sailors using wheelchairs, or those who have mobility limitations and could benefit from the features of an accessible cabin. We request our Sailors acknowledge the need for the accessible cabin by completing the Special Services Request Form or by specifying all of your required accommodations to our Sailor Services Crew or your First Mate (travel professional). Please make every effort to contact us at least 45 days in advance of your voyage date.  To get more information or request accessibility assistance on your upcoming voyage visit our Accessibility Website .

Yes, please contact our Sailor Services Crew to request any specific medical services or needed accommodations. To get more information or request accessibility assistance on your upcoming voyage visit our Accessibility Website .

Yes, we have cabins that can accommodate wheelchairs. Please bring your own preferred wheelchair, if needed, and be sure to book early to guarantee the cabin of your choice. Sailors who are bringing a wheelchair or scooter should book a Fully Accessible Cabin.  To get more information or request accessibility assistance on your upcoming voyage visit our Accessibility Website .

Because the ships are supplied all over the world, it may be easier to meet your specific food allergy requirements in some countries, but very difficult in others. Special dietary requests should be submitted at least 45 days prior to sailing. For requests made with less notice, we will make our best efforts to provide your requested accommodation but cannot guarantee our ability to do so.  We can arrange to have no sugar and low sodium meals for Sailors with those specific medical dietary restrictions upon request.  Please note, Virgin Voyages does not have allergen-free kitchens. We do not offer Halal or Kosher Dining options.

At Virgin Voyages, we completely support our Sailors' desire for a late checkout. With that, boarding generally begins at 2pm, but Sailors must follow their selected Terminal Arrival Time to complete terminal check-in.

The terminal will close at 7:30 PM.

In the Virgin Voyages app, Sailors can check in prior to their voyage and select a Terminal Arrival Time. Our vessel will set sail at the time listed and will depart in a timely manner. That means on the dot.

Yes, we have a limited number of adjoining cabins so be sure to book early.

While we encourage Sailors to book alternative transportation in advance to ensure a smooth trip, Virgin Voyages is not currently providing these accommodations.

As an Adult-by-Design experience, we have an array of carefully selected beer, wine and expert cocktail options shipwide. If you must bring that rare bottle of red you got in the south of France, we get it. Sailors are also welcome to bring two (2) 750mL bottles of wine per cabin in carry-on bags (sorry, no liquor or beer please). Please note, any alcohol in your checked luggage will be confiscated. You are also welcome to bring specialty liquors from a port of call on board. Simply hand them to our security team as you board, and we will hold them until your final night.

Clothing irons are a no go on board, but if you need to bring flat iron for your hair, that's ok. There is a hair dryer already in your cabin.

With more than 20+ delicious options available, there's no need to bring food on board. However, if you have a necessary item or dietary supplement you must bring on board, feel free to contact out Sailor Services Crew for special clearance.

Yes, what would a Virgin Voyages experience be without a few guitars? Just be sure all instruments fit through terminal screening equipment. Also, if the music is disturbing other Sailors, which we don't think it will (we know how good you are), we might have to ask you to lower the volume a bit to respect everyone's needs.

We've taken great care to design an experience where our Sailors can enjoy an 18+ environment for reflection, transformation and exploration without life’s everyday stressors.

Small quantities of water, protein based drinks, non-alcoholic beer, or soft drinks in boxes and cans are permitted in hand luggage only. Drinks in bottles (glass or plastic) are not permitted. A small quantity is considered a maximum of twelve (12) sealed, unopened cans/cartons of twelve 12 ounces each or less per person. - If there is a special need for having a specific drink, please contact Sailor Services.

That would be a strong no. There are no weapons or ammunition of any kind allowed on board.

Sailors may change their voyage date up until 45 days prior to the sailing, and the new voyage date can be up to 1 year from the original sailing start date. Please keep in mind that if changing a voyage date, any bookable experiences, such as dining, Shore Things, and arrival time slots, will need to be rebooked on the new voyage date.

In an effort to make your booking experience as seamless as possible, our web-based booking allows Sailors to choose a specific cabin category. We will then assign the best cabin available based on the selected criteria. If you wish to change your ship location, you can select a new zone on the Web based on availability. If you wish to choose a more specific cabin or suite, you can reach out to our Sailor Services Crew or your travel agent for help.

Of course, we'd be happy to save your spot! If you're booking more than 45 days before the voyage begins, we can hold your cabin for 24 hours - no $trings attached.

Because you booked with one of our fabulous Tour Operator partners, they will need to make any changes or adjustments to your booking directly. Please reach out to your travel partner for details.

Yes, Sailors can upgrade their cabin by re-applying for a new Uplift loan.

Voyages traveling to the French Caribbean Islands of Martinique & Guadeloupe will be strictly passport book only, and passport cards will not be accepted at these ports.

Though unlikely, Virgin Voyages reserves the right to refuse booking or deny boarding to anyone that does not comply with the rules and regulations stated in the ticket contract.

Your Level Upgrade does not include any additional promotions but you can keep the promotions you already have.

What's a holiday without a few choice cocktails? Your sailing includes our essential drinks and, while we don't have traditional packages, our drink offerings are very reasonably priced. If you're looking to set aside some loot for premium beverages, Sailors can also purchase our Bar Tab before setting sail.

For our full Sailor Conduct Policy please see  here .

Our Sailors tend to be world travelers, whether it's on land or at sea. That's why we are making it easier for those who wish to book their entire trip in one step. To make hotel and air reservations please contact Sailor Services via phone, email, or chat.

At Virgin Voyages, we are partnering with Uplift to provide access to a flexible, pay-over-time financing solution to allow our Sailors the most accessible and affordable options to voyage with us. Sailors can easily apply through Uplift to pay for their voyage including all associated costs like add-ons and extras such as Voyage Protection and Shore Things. Please visit our Uplift page for more information about how you can apply .

Yes, every Sailor has the opportunity to choose Voyage Protection when booking. If you decide you want to add Voyage Protection after booking, please contact Sailor Services or your travel agent to arrange it prior to making the final payment. Please visit the Aon plan page for more information about Voyage Protection benefits .

If accepted, your offer is automatically processed and charged to your form of payment on file.

Our main goal is to provide the appropriate, effective, and efficient response to any communicable disease, all while ensuring the health and safety of our Crew and Sailors as well as the communities we visit. In order to achieve this, we are implementing the most up-to-date hygiene initiatives and utilizing the best practices available to sanitize and disinfect our shipboard environment. This includes the installation of sanitizing dispensers throughout the ship, the implementation of touchless faucets, the placement of increased hygiene signage, and the utilization of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-registered disinfectants. Additionally, we have also adopted the use of advanced cleaning tools such as fogging to further enhance our cleaning efforts. Furthermore, it is important to note that our ratio of terrace cabins is one of the highest in the industry — allowing plenty of access to (salt-infused) fresh air. Thus, we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all onboard.

Our Crew’s safety and health is important, crew are fully vaccinated. Crew members are isolated when possible communicable disease might be identified.

You can give us a ring using your TTY device through the Telecommunications Relay Service. Just dial 711, and ask the Relay Operator to connect you to our Sailor Services Shore Crew at 954-488-2955.

If you have any special requests or need personal accommodations, please contact our Sailor Services Crew or your travel agent, and they'll be able to let the ship know precisely what you need!

Our goal is to process travel reimbursements within 30 days from the time a request is submitted. Reimbursements will be sent to Sailors via a check in the mail (for US residents) or Western Union Cash Pickup (10-digit MTCN tracking number).

We understand the importance of receiving your voyage fare refund, and our goal is to process these requests as quickly as possible. We expect to process refunds within 7 days from receiving your request. Please note that refunds may take up to 14 days to reflect in your account based on your banking institution.

The number of Sailors per cabin depends on the selected cabin. Overall, occupancy of cabins ranges from 1 to 4 Sailors.

Deposits are 20% of your voyage fare (ticket price only, not taxes and fees), and they are due at the time of booking. However, if you're booking less than 120 days prior to your voyage start date, full voyage fare would be required.

More than 120 days prior to your departure date, you'll need to pay a 20% deposit to secure your booking (but don't forget, you can also hold a booking for 24 hours without any money down up until 45 days). Once you're within 120 days of sailing, the full voyage fare is due at the time of booking. If you need to change your travel plans after this, you still have plenty of options. Just take a look at our cancellation policy or give our Sailor Services Crew or your travel agent a shout for more details.

Sorry, laws are laws. While 18+ Sailors can enjoy alcoholic beverages at sea, it's illegal for 18- to 20-year-olds to possess alcohol in Florida. Sorry, Sailors!

Congratulations on your new mini-Sailor! In order to set sail, you must be no more than 23 weeks pregnant by the end of the voyage. Upon embarkation at the port, you will need to provide medical documentation confirming your good health, your baby's health, your pregnancy is not considered high-risk, and that you will be no more than 23 weeks pregnant by the end of your sailing. Failure to bring this documentation will result in denial of boarding at your cost.

Sailors are permitted to bring oxygen cylinders and equipment on board within the following guidelines: Sailors must make independent arrangements for the rental, delivery, and return of any oxygen cylinders and related medical equipment. Only 2 cylinders per cabin may be personally hand carried aboard by Sailors. All other quantities must be delivered. Stevedores at the port terminal are unable to coordinate the transfer of oxygen cylinders. Due to safety concerns and storage limitations, liquid oxygen or large cylinder systems (greater than 680 liters or E / M-24 size) are not permitted, and the types and quantities of oxygen cylinders allowed on board may be limited. Sailors bringing more than one cylinder must make their own arrangements for transportation to the cruise terminal. To coordinate an oxygen rental, you can reach out to Scootaround at (toll-free) 1-888-441-7575 or 204-982-0657

While we have not placed restrictions on Sailor luggage, we recommend limiting the number of bags you bring on board so that we can accommodate all Sailors and ensure a smooth embarkation. We also recommend checking airline restrictions if you're flying.

All payments for Voyage Protection are final (non-refundable) after the 10-day grace period if the booking was made more than 120 days before the voyage.

If you require accommodation or other special assistance during your voyage (such as an interpreter, alternative format materials, embarkation/disembarkation assistance, dietary restrictions) and/or have any questions regarding accessibility (such as bringing a service dog or oxygen), please fill out this  Request Form or contact us at your earliest convenience.  Our Crew will be able to assist you best with as much information and advanced notice as possible. Please contact our Sailor Services Crew at 954-488-2955 (US), +44 (20) 30034919 (UK) or +61 (1800) 491708 (AUS).  Of course, if you do not require any special assistance or accommodation, you’re all set, and we’ll see you on board. To get more information or request accessibility assistance on your upcoming voyage visit our Accessibility Website .

We recognize and appreciate that you’re spending some additional time with us, and we are going to make every effort to accommodate your cabin assignments on new bookings.

Every Virgin Voyages sailing is an experience created exclusively for adults, and the minimum age to book and sail is 18 years old.

We recommend booking a flight into the local airport (i.e. MIA or BCN) with an arrival time no later than 10am.

The ship will depart at 8:30 PM.

Smoking will only be permitted in a designated smoking room and on the top deck outdoor area. Smoking is not allowed on any cabin terraces. Smoking of any kind outside of designated areas (even with a "vape" device) will result in a $500 fee, is a material breach of your ticket contract, and may result in you being disembarked at the next port with no refund. Any repatriating fees will be charged to your onboard account.

Our cancellation policy was created to provide a better experience for our Sailors. Here's everything you need to know: If you’re booking more than 120 days prior to the start of the voyage, you have a 7-day grace period to request a full refund on your deposit and any other payments made. Refunds will be issued to your original form of payment. After the 7-day grace period (but still before the 120-day window), you can receive a full refund on any payments, excluding your deposit. For your deposit, you will receive Future Voyage Credit at this time. Between 119 and 45 days, any funds paid will be converted to Future Voyage Credit (FVC), good to use on any voyage 1 year from the original voyage start date. Sweet deal, huh? Once you’re within 44 days of your voyage, all funds paid are final. But you do have the option to send someone else in your place up to 48 hours before your voyage if you really can't sail. Please note that taxes and fees will be refunded regardless of when the booking is canceled. Have more questions? No worries. Our Sailor Services Crew or your travel agent can help walk you through the process. As always, we recommend you purchase our Voyage Protection.

On Virgin Voyages creating a safe and secure environment for our Sailors is our top priority. This is a super-long-but-super-important list of items that are a no-go on every Virgin Voyages vessel.  If a sailor is found in possession of such items onboard or during embarkation, The vessel may deny these items from coming onboard, dispose of items or confiscate items until the end of the voyage. Thank you for helping to ensure the safety of everyone on board. See the list of all prohibited items.

Not your average “stock tour” experiences, our Shore Things aim to connect Sailors to paths less traveled within each destination, providing access to local culture and discovery. While you can start exploring our Shore Things online now, Sailors can book by visiting the Discover tab on the Sailor App, chatting with our Crew or through their travel partner. All Sailors will be able to book within 120 days prior to their voyage start, and those booked in RockStar Quarters will get early access within 135 days.
