The Discoveries Of

The 10 Best San Diego Tours for City Sightseeing

Heading to San Diego? Add these epic San Diego tours to your itinerary and thank me later.

With magical views of the Pacific flanking one side of the city and quirky neighbourhoods peppering the other, it’s no surprise that I am San Francisco’s number one fan. Take one visit to San Diego, and I guarantee you will be, too.

From cool foodie districts to thrilling watersports, and some spooky tales that haunt the city, the options for San Diego tours are endless.

But where do you even begin? That’s where I come in.

I’ve curated this epic guide to the very best San Diego tours, so you can spend less time planning and more time enjoying this wonderful Californian city. Let’s go.

Best San Diego Tours

San diego: harbour cruise.

Coronado Bridge

If you ask me, there’s nothing quite like admiring the San Diego skyline from the water and seeing some top landmarks along the way. That’s why San Diego boat tours in the bay and the Pacific Ocean are one of the best things to do in the city.

On this particular tour , a modern yacht sets sail from Pier 2 before passing under the mesmerising Coronado Bridge. After exploring the bay – where you’ll get to see sculptures like the Unconditional Surrender – the ship loops back and heads for open water.

Get your camera at the ready; you’ll pass the breathtaking Sunset Cliffs and get a coastal view of Cabrillo National Monument.

Raining? Not a problem, as three indoor floors provide 360° views and serve some tasty snacks (at an additional charge).

San Diego: Seal City Tour

San Diego

I’ll take a punt and say that you’ll never find a more unique San Diego bus tour than this one – you get to tackle land and sea all in one vehicle. That’s right, this is an amphibious bus, so after winding through the city’s streets, you’ll cruise into San Diego Bay.

You’ll take a deep dive into San Diego port’s history, from its creation in 1962 to its importance as a military base today. The goosebumps (or nerves, if you’re partial to some seasickness) will hit as the bus/boat leaves land and enters the water.

You’ll get to explore Shelter Island, where all the San Diego seal tours go. And you’ll also be able to admire the mighty sea lions that dominate the island and occasionally spot a pod of dolphins.

San Diego: Hop-on Hop-Off Narrated Tour of Old Town

Old Town La Quinta

Now, I’m not one to recommend bus tours (they’re usually yawn-worthy), however, nothing beats a classic San Diego tour bus. And this hop-on hop-off journey through Old Town is simply fantastic.

There are over 100 points of interest in Old Town and Coronado, and you’ll learn about them from the tour guide.

You’ll visit plenty of sights like the Mormon Battalion Historic Site, which uncovers the Mexican-American war of 1846. Other iconic sights include La Casa de Estudillo, built in 1827, a walk through Balboa Park, and the culinary delights at Gaslamp Quarter (my fave area of San Diego, FYI).

This is a one-day ticket. But if you need more time to explore everything, you can always upgrade to a two-day tour.

San Diego: Sightseeing Dinner Cruise

Water Grill Restaurant San Diego

Excursions in San Diego don’t get much better than a sunset dinner cruise through the city port. During this three-hour trip through the Pacific Ocean, you’ll be able to revel in the stunning sunset.

After a magnificent display of colour from the sun, you’ll head to your table, where a three-course meal awaits. Drinks are at an additional cost but, if you ask me, pairing a good wine with braised ribs or a crisp garden salad is a MUST.

The live DJ helps keep the vibe alive on the boat. And the dazzling lights from the city make for a truly romantic evening.

La Jolla: Sea Cave Kayaking

Sunset La Jolla San Diego

Looking for an action-packed San Diego guided tour? If so, a sea cave kayaking tour is the way to go. Along the northern coast lies the gorgeous La Jolla Cove, where you’ll spend a magical hour and a half exploring its mysterious caves.

Your guide will take you through the emerald waters and pale sandstone coves. You’ll also see plenty of wildlife in this sanctuary, from sea turtles to orange garibaldi fish among the vibrant seagrass.

It’s a glorious San Diego sightseeing tour in one of the city’s beautiful wildlife regions.

Psst… If you join the tour in the fall, you can see the majestic leopard sharks. While in winter, you could spot the mighty grey whales as they migrate south.

Carlsbad Village: 3-Hour Local Food Tour

Carlsbad Village

Call me biased, but the best way to explore the city is on a San Diego food tour . Less than 40 minutes from San Diego is the picturesque coastal village of Carlsbad, which is also well-known for its culinary delights.

On this three-hour tour, you’ll visit eight eateries across town. Each spot is unique, and the food is guaranteed to impress. You’ll dig into classic Mexican tacos, divine crab cakes, and light sponge cakes.

The murals across the town make the walks between restaurants a joy. You’ll kill two birds with one stone, as it’s also a San Diego wine tour, which introduces you to all the award-winning wines from the region.

San Diego: Brothels, Bites, and Booze Gaslamp Quarter Tour

San Diego

Ready for an epic San Diego brewery tour? This journey through Gaslamp Quarter will leave you wishing you could move into this trendy neighbourhood.

This part of town was once a host to a whopping 120 brothels. Today, it serves as a vibey hub where you can visit over 100 restaurants and bars. On this tour, you’ll learn about the history of the Gaslamp Quarter through old stories that’ll leave you chuckling.

You’ll visit some iconic breweries like Rustic Root and Barleymash. And it’s not just drinking,  as some of the area’s top restaurants offer tasty treats.

You’ll top up your drinks so often that it’s no surprise that it’s called the San Diego glass bottom tour.

San Diego: Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour

El Campo Santo Cemetery

If you want to hear some spooky stories, jump onto this trolley-led San Diego ghost tour . You’ll explore some ominous spaces, like the paranormal Whaley House and Pioneer Park.

You’ll learn stories about famous gunslingers like Bill Longley and the spirit of Yankee Jim Robinson that haunts Whaley House. The ghostly El Campo Cemetery is a place that sends shivers down your spine, so you can bet it’s on this tour.

This San Diego city tour is at night, so it’s even more hair-raising. It is a fantastic way to explore San Diego, and popping into one of the lovely bars in Old Town is a great way to calm your nerves beforehand.

San Diego: Drive Your Own Speed Boat 2-Hour Tour

The Maritime Museum of San Diego

Thrillseekers will want to head out on a two-hour speed boat tour . You’ll be the captain of your ship – in a way – as you drive your speed boat behind the tour guide, who’ll point out some famous landmarks.

Don’t worry; it’s not just driving around the bay willy-nilly. The two-way intercom will mean you’ll hear all the guide’s witty commentary about the bright red Russian Submarine at the San Diego Maritime Museum. And how about passing Point Loma and the historic lighthouse that guides boats safely through the bay?

You’ll also pass Hotel del Coronado, a luxurious spot along the coastline. And the fun doesn’t end there. You’ll step back a bit – or float back, I guess – and admire the breathtaking views of San Diego’s skyline.

This is the perfect opportunity to snap an unforgettable photo that’ll freeze this moment.

Book Your Speed Boat Tour Here

San Diego: Whale and Dolphin Watching Cruise

The Adventure Hornblower

San Diego whale-watching tours are a great way to spend the day, and this four-hour whale cruise is no different.

The Adventure Hornblower sets sail for the Pacific Ocean, where you’ll (hopefully) spot blue whales, grey whales, and dolphins. The Minke, Spot Fin, and Humpback whales are also common creatures.

You’re more likely to spot grey whales between winter and spring as they migrate towards the California coast for warmer breeding grounds. But if you want to spot the largest animal in the world – the blue whale – join this tour in summer.

It’s a long tour, so you’ll need to buy snacks and drinks onboard (or beforehand), and the outdoor and indoor seating areas are fantastic for all-around viewing.

Top Tip: If you get seasick easily and want a quick fix, focus on the horizon and breathe deeply.

Practical Tips for Exploring the Best San Diego Excursions

  • Plan your days so you can have as much fun as possible. The vast majority of these tours take place in the afternoon or at night, so plan a day that ends in the area before a relaxing nighttime excursion.
  • Aim to arrive at the meeting point at least 15 minutes before the tour begins. This will help prevent any delay and make it a stress-free experience for both you and the guide.
  • My top tip would be to include San Diego as part of a banging California road trip . It’s a good idea to have a car to get you from tour to tour.
  • Budget accordingly. You’ll want to see as much as possible, so pick the top activities that fit your budget and enjoy the wonders of San Diego.

Ultimate Travel Guide to San Diego: A Local’s Guide on What to Do, Where to Stay + More

By: Author Robyn Robledo

Posted on Last updated: March 10, 2024

San Diego is as amazing as it sounds. With seventy-degree weather year-round on average and very little rain, a visit to San Diego should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Southern California boasts numerous fantastic beach towns in greater San Diego. This guide helps tailor your visit to fit your travel style perfectly.

This blog covers San Diego neighborhoods, featuring top attractions, dining spots, and accommodation details. For a concise guide on favorite beaches, hikes, and climbs, visit our ‘Outdoor Adventure Guide to San Diego.

Save this for later, pin it!

What’s So Great About San Diego?

I’ve tried to escape San Diego.

I’ve complained about the traffic, the cost of living, and the rat race, but after four years of trying to escape this city for something smaller and with more sharp jagged mountains, I’ve learned to understand why this is America’s Finest City.

I was born and raised in San Diego.  Graduated from SDSU, ran a business in Coronado for 20 years, and delivered all 5 of my babies here. The city has changed a lot over those 43 years, but in many ways, it’s stayed true to its roots.

I realized I’ve written detailed blogs about various places, but I haven’t tapped into my extensive knowledge about San Diego. With four decades of personal experience, I aim to help you uncover why so many are drawn to America’s Finest City.

Outdoor Adventure Guide to San Diego: Silver Strand

San Diego: Surf culture meets Hispanic influence at the southwestern US border. Beyond waves and burritos, discover its diverse allure.

San Diego’s food scene boasts Kombucha and Kava bars, dog-friendly breweries, and cafes selling flowers and succulents, catering to diverse tastes.

Most importantly, don’t just think that all our beaches are the same.

Want to find some sand dollars? Head to Silver Strand at low tide. Want a sandy shore for young kids to play? Head to La Jolla shores. Want to surf a chillwave? Head to Tourmaline. Want to watch the best sunsets? Head to the pier at OB.

When to Visit San Diego

Any time of year is fantastic, but January stands out. Locals might find it chilly with temperatures in the mid-sixties on the coast and rarely any rain.

One of my other favorite times to be in San Diego is November and December, but it does get crowded during the holidays.

San Diego’s ocean stoke: Spring winds challenge surf, aim for sunrise; summer’s mellow waves are perfect for learning.

Shuffle feet in shallow waters at San Diego beaches to avoid stingrays. Seek lifeguard help if stung for hot water treatment.

Getting Around San Diego

San Diego traffic is notorious; avoid beach-to-city drives during peak hours by considering alternate transportation like the train.

More than likely you’re going to want to rent a car when you visit San Diego.

Public transportation via the bus system and trolley isn’t recommended for regular use, except for occasional trips like reaching a Padre Game. Sticking to beach towns such as Pacific or Mission Beach allows for car-free exploration, relying on Uber/Lyft and trendy electric scooters prevalent in these areas.

Use the search box below to find cheap car rentals in San Diego:

San Diego Go Card

In San Diego, numerous free activities like beaches, parks, and hikes abound, but for paid attractions like the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and others, consider the San Diego GO Card for access to nearly 50 sites.

I’ve highlighted many of the GO Card attractions in colored boxes like this one.

san diego tour youtube

San Diego’s Central Neighborhoods

Downtown: gaslamp district + little italy.

Stay in Downtown San Diego for easy access to restaurants, bars, a vibrant farmers market, Petco Park, Seaport Village, and the USS Midway aircraft museum. Don’t miss the ferry to Coronado Island!

If you are looking for some exercise, walk or run along Harbor Drive .

You can even ride the train from Downtown up the coast to Oceanside and not have to deal with San Diego traffic.

If you love adrenaline like I do, then my suggestion would be to get on the water. There are many cool ways to do that here but I think the one that appeals to me most personally is the San Diego Speed Boat Adventures . These 13 foot, 2 passenger boats are super safe and easy to drive, but what I like most is that it’s a self guided tour, which means I can go as fast or slow as I want. The San Diego Speed Boat Adventures is part of the San Diego GO Card.

If you do get out on the water, head out towards the tip of Point Loma. Besides getting views of all the tourist attractions I’ve just mentioned- Navy Ships, Midway, Coronado Bridge, Star of India, and the Seaport Village, there’s a good chance of seeing seal lions and dolphins on your way out and I think the views of Cabrillo National Park from the water are epic. You might even see some whales or surfers in the water out at the point.

A more mellow way to enjoy the San Diego Harbor is on a Hornblower Cruise, which is also part of the San Diego GO Card .

There are so many choices for food in the Gaslamp District and Little Italy. If you are uber health-conscious or vegan, you’ll want to check out Cafe Gratitude. It can be a bit pricey but they have delicious and unique vegan meals.

Cafe Gratitude, Downtown San Diego

Now, if you don’t have dietary restrictions and you want a delicious, affordable meal, head to Filippis in Little Italy (there are 13 other locations spread out in San Diego too).

For coffee, check out James Coffee Co . This dog-friendly, totally hipster coffee shop has great coffee and a chill vibe.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by James Coffee Co. (@jamescoffeeco) on Oct 8, 2019 at 8:12am PDT

Ironically, I think the Princess Pub (yep, it’s an English Pub) has the absolute best fish tacos so if you’re in the mood for that you might want to check it out however, the other food is pretty average.

Little Italy is also famous for its numerous wine restaurants and bars .

This San Diego neighborhood is the place to go for Mexican heritage, historical sites, colorful shops, and eclectic restaurants. Two fun, popular (and crowded) events here each year are Cinco de Mayo and the Day of the Dead festival.

Old Town, Nibble Chocolate, San Diego Travel

My favorite part of Old Town is the Fiesta del Reyes section of Old Town. It’s home to one of our favorite chocolate shops, Nibble , which not only sells the best chocolate but also has amazing coffee drinks.

You can also sign up here for a tequila, Tacos, and Culinary Tour of Old Town.

You have to make time for Point Loma’s Sunset Cliffs , an obviously great spot to watch the sunset, but I think equally wonderful at sunrise. One of my favorite things to do in Point Loma is go for a run along Sunset Cliffs.

I love surfing here when the swell is big. Tide plays a big factor though for both surfing and exploration so make sure you are aware of if the tide is coming up or down. Note though that this is not a good place for kids to play since the tide can rise quite fast.

Sunset Cliffs, San Diego

A better option for tide pooling would be Cabrillo National Monument or if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee there, La Jolla Cove also has great tide pooling. Check here for the tide schedule.

Point Loma has an abundance of options at Liberty Station .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Liberty Station (@libertystation) on Dec 18, 2019 at 5:40pm PST

Besides the Liberty Public Market , which is a huge European Market like Torvehallerne in Copenhagen , there’s the popular brewery, Stone Brewing Co , 50’s themed Corvette Diner , Trader Joe’s , and great cafes.

North + South Park

This is where you’ll want to head to if you want to see the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. It’s also a great place to check out San Diego’s hipster restaurants, cafes, and breweries.

If you love animals, you can’t miss the San Diego Zoo . Growing up and getting to go here so often might have made me a little jaded about how amazing our zoo is. In the summer, the nighttime attractions are extra fun for kids and grown-ups alike.

If you can visit The Zoo during the school year on a non-holiday, you will love getting up close encounters with the animals. Remember they are more active in the morning and evening when the temperature is cooler so try to plan your trip accordingly.

The San Diego Zoo is big and will require a full day to take it in. You might want to consider paying for the bus tour if you don’t feel up for a day of intense hiking because there are a lot of hills here.

If you choose to visit the San Diego Zoo, it might be worth getting the San Diego GO Card.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by balboapark (@balboapark) on Aug 20, 2019 at 3:34pm PDT

Balboa Park is very pretty and a great spot for photos and enjoying a picnic. The museums are great but can be crowded on the weekends and in peak summer so if this is high on your priority list, get here right when it opens. Parking can also be challenging during those peak times.

The museums can be quite expensive when paid for individually but are part of the San Diego GO Card .

You have so many great food choices in North Park off University Avenue and El Cajon Blvd.

My favorite is Tiger! Tiger! for craft beer and pork sandwiches, although there are a lot of other great specialties on their menu. For thin-crust pizza and beer go to URBN North Park .

There’s also City Tacos for Mexican food, Poki One N Half , Street Side Thai Kitchen , and the famous Chicken Pie Shop .

For breakfast, check out the Mission North Park or Breakfast Republic .

For coffee, my absolute favorite is Dark Horse Coffee Roasters . If you love chocolate, make sure to try their mocha. And if succulents and flowers are your thing, you have to check out Communal Coffee . There’s Figaro Dessert Cafe nearby, which I haven’t tried but looks delicious.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by C O M M U N A L C O F F E E (@communalcoffee) on Nov 26, 2019 at 6:00am PST

When it comes to breweries I love Mike Hess , Modern Times , and Thorn St Brewing . You’ll have to try them all and decide which your favorite is.

In South Park, all the locals I talk to agree that hands down the best place to eat is Buona Forchetta . It’s the place to go for upscale Italian food and their wine list is incredible!

I’m usually drawn to breweries so my recommendation is Station Tavern if you’re craving beer and burgers or Hamilton’s Tavern for beer and brats.

The observatory North Park, San Diego

Last, for live music and nightlife, check out a show at The Observatory .  See upcoming events here.

Where to Stay near Downtown + Central San Diego

If you’re looking to be as close as possible to the nightlife and restaurants, you’ll want to stay as close to the Gaslamp District as possible.

  • For budget options, try HI Downtown Hostel Good Nite Inn , or ITH Adventure Hostel
  • For mid-range try the Pacific Inn and the Hampton Inn Downtown
  • For luxury accommodation stay at Sonder – The William Penn or Staypineapple in Gaslamp.
If you are traveling with kids, you’ll probably prefer staying near one of the Beach Neighborhoods listed below instead.

San Diego’s Central Beach Neighborhoods

All three of these beach neighborhoods–Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach–are my recommended places to stay on your first visit to San Diego .  From all three of these neighborhoods, you can walk, bike, or rent a scooter to get around.

It’s really not that important to see all three so I suggest you pick one and immerse yourself in its unique beauty.  There are public restrooms at all of these beaches, plenty of food options, and are still close to all the attractions listed in the above section.

Pacific Beach

Pacific Beach is my fav . If you want an authentic San Diego surf town vibe, this is where it’s at. I mean, you can go up to La Jolla and Encinitas (and I do love Cardiff), but they are missing that down-to-earth SoCal vibe that you’ll get here.

outdoor adventure san diego

PB may be known as the party town of San Diego but for the majority of the day, it isn’t true. I spend most days in PB when I’m in San Diego and don’t let the few PB crazies make you nervous. They’re harmless and if you want to avoid them, stay away from Starbucks by Grand Ave, which shouldn’t be a problem since PB has so many great coffee shops.

When I just want the best quality coffee, I go to Birdrock Coffee on Garnet (although there are other locations). If you want to sit down for coffee and some food (best scones here) then go to Brick and Bell on Cass St.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bird Rock Coffee Roasters (@birdrockcoffeeroasters) on Jan 14, 2020 at 8:05am PST

Millennials might like Better Buzz which has 3 different locations within Pacific Beach. The vibe is cool but I won’t go there because it’s overly trendy, and corporate (we prefer to support local small business), and I think the coffee is mediocre. But if you like spending $10 for good avocado toast, go for it.

Hit up the Trader Joe’s in PB right when you arrive; grab avocados, sun-dried tomatoes, and sourdough for a week’s worth of savings!

I love surfing by Crystal Pie r or in front of Law Street and when the waves get too heavy, I go a bit further north to a great beginner-friendly break, Tourmaline .

Surfing Law Street, Pacific Beach, San Diego

Even if you don’t surf you’ll love walking the stretch of beach or boardwalk from Tourmaline to the pier. If you keep walking south you’ll end up in Mission Beach and can easily rent a scooter or Uber to bring you back.

There are so many great places to eat in PB that I can’t narrow it down to the top few, but I will say, the better restaurants are not on the beach. For the best meals, you need to check out restaurants a few blocks away from Mission Blvd.

Mission Beach

Between PB and OB is Mission Beach, which is lined with restaurants, surf shops, bike rentals, and bars. I rarely go here so I can’t fully vouch for it. Mission Beach combines the classically touristy California boardwalk with a beachfront amusement park, Belmont Park.

Belmont Park is also part of the Go Card and gives you unlimited rides on the rollercoaster, access to laser tag, sky ropes, mini-golf, and two turns on the zip line.

Belmont Park, Mission Beach San Diego

If you surf, check out the south jetty, but all along the beach is good for newbies on a fuller tide (stick to a 3-foot tide or bigger). There’s also the wave pool here by Belmont Park.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay is adjacent to Mission Beach and Pacific Beach and also where you’ll find SeaWorld. This is where I live half the year and growing up this was my favorite place in San Diego to go.

Weekends get crowded but during the week the vibe is super chill.

Enjoy morning runs, picnics, and kids’ play at campgrounds. Rent bikes for Bay and Fiesta Island tours. End with bonfires, Sea World fireworks at Mission Bay, Fiesta Island, or Ski Beach (my fave).

Skating, Mission Bay, San Diego

Note that the gate to Fiesta Island is locked each night at 10 pm. Many vans and RVs stay parked overnight even though it’s technically not allowed but occasionally police roll through and ticket everyone. It’s up to you if you want to roll the dice.

If you want a nice bike ride or long run, park at De Anza Cove on Mission Bay and follow the sidewalks all along Mission Bay. You can even get to OB, MB, and PB on the bike routes.

Running Mission Bay, San Diego

Sea World, also on the Go Card , is in Mission Bay and if you visit in the summer, you may want to look into signing your kids up for a week-long Sea World camp while you and your spouse get some adult time to explore America’s Finest City.

Ocean Beach

While you will see a lot of people living out of their cars here and there is no shortage of dreadlocks and guitars strumming, OB is the safe, fun, and fairly affordable area to stay in.

One of my favorite things to do in OB is watch the sunset from Wonderland Bar. If you are traveling with a dog, Dog Beach in OB is where it’s at.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Wonderland Ocean Pub (@wonderlandoceanbeach) on Dec 30, 2019 at 3:00pm PST

I love surfing here! Here are some tips if you come here to shred:

  • The jetty, on the north side by Dog Beach, is a fast right and you must respect the locals.
  • If you’re a newbie, stick to the waves directly in front of dog beach.
  • Intermediate surfers will like Avalanche, the jetty in the center of the beach, or surfing the Pier.

Where to Stay near Central San Diego Beaches

If you are looking for a centrally located and affordable hotel to stay at in San Diego, check out these:

  • Best budget: California Dreams Hostel + ITH Beach Bungalow Surf Hostel
  • Best mid range (beachfront): Pacific Terrace Hotel and Surfer Beach Hotel in PB + Ocean Villa Inn in Ocean Beach + Campland On the Bay campground on Mission Bay
  • Best luxury: Tower 23 Hotel at the PB pier + Blue Sea Beach Hotel on the Mission Beach Boardwalk

San Diego’s North County Beach Neighborhoods

If you want less grunge and a more upscale beach scene, then La Jolla, Del Mar, or Encinitas are where you want to be.

If you like shopping, fancier restaurants, and gorgeous views, stay in La Jolla. There are two parts to La Jolla and they aren’t really easy to walk from one to the other.

La Jolla Cove is where the seals are on the beach and is within walking distance of all the great restaurants and shopping.

La Jolla Shores: Perfect for families and beginner surfers. Enjoy ample amenities, and gentle waves, but arrive early for parking.

Within walking distance, there are great places to eat and do a little shopping.  You’ll also find places to rent surfboards and sign up for surf lessons or kayaking tours.

If you have the GoCard , you can rent a surfboard for free at Bike and Kayak in La Jolla.

Another nice spot to check out is Windansea .  It’s not the best beach for kids, but it’s a gorgeous beach to chill at and to take pictures at sunset.  We love surfing here but it is not a beginner’s wave.

Outdoor adventure in San diego

Between La Jolla and Del Mar is Torrey Pines . This is a beautiful place to hike and bike riding up Torrey Pines Road is a popular thing to do in San Diego. The views from Torrey Pine’s Gliderport are amazing and if you feel adventurous, you can do some hang gliding over the coast from here.

Del Mar is a great place to spend a few hours shopping and eating.  There are also really good surf breaks all along the Del Mar coast but they are not great for beginners.

If you want a family-friendly beach, it’s probably easier to pay to park at Seaside State Beach which is just north of Del Mar. It’s $10 for the day but then you don’t have to worry about fighting parking and there are bathrooms. The only bad thing is there aren’t a lot of food options within easy walking distance.

Solana Beach, Cardiff + Encinitas

Cardiff (or Encinitas) is runner-up for my favorite place in San Diego. You have everything here from surf shops and yoga studios to some of San Diego’s best gastropubs, açaí bowls, and coffee shops.

Surfing Cardiff by the Sea, Surfing the California Coast

Solana Beach’s Cedros Design District boasts unique shops, Belly Up Tavern, and local favorites like Lofty Coffee. Highway 101 offers surf shops and diverse dining options, including Pizza Port.

Carlsbad + Oceanside

For a first trip focusing on San Diego highlights, consider staying in Encinitas or further south to avoid heavy traffic. Carlsbad and Oceanside offer great alternatives if skipping downtown, PB, the Zoo, or Balboa Park.

If you have kids under 10 years old, Legoland could be what brings you to Carlsbad. It’s also on the Go Card .

Where to Stay near North San Diego Beaches

  • Best budget: Coronado Inn (or camp on the Silver Strand) + Sand Castle Inn
  • Best midrange and most scenic: The Loews Coronado Bay Resort + Hotel Marisol Coronado
  • Best luxury: Pier South Resort + Glorietta Bay Inn

San Diego’s South County Beach Neighborhoods

Coronado’s appeal for first-time San Diego visitors varies: skip for adventure, embrace beach luxury, dining, and boutique shopping.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The San Diego Union-Tribune (@sandiegouniontribune) on Jan 2, 2020 at 1:37pm PST

The Hotel Del Coronado is beautiful and I think running the beach in front of the hotel at low tide is one of my favorite parts of Coronado.

There’s a narrated trolley tour that you can take and if you are a history buff, you’ll probably love this.

Outdoor Adventure Guide to San Diego: Silver Strand

Consider heading south to Silver Strand State Beach for a great spot to explore with kids or enjoy nature. At low tide, it’s perfect for walking or running, and I’ve found countless sand dollars along this stretch during my two years here.

For top-notch beer and burgers, head to Leroy’s Kitchen and Lounge. Enjoy a classic dinner breakfast at Clayton’s Coffee Shop. For protein-packed meals, try Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q. Satisfy your sweet tooth with French pastries from Tartine’s French Bakery.

Imperial Beach

Discover Imperial Beach’s culinary scene with must-visit spots: Coronado Brewing Company for great beer and SEA 180 for stunning ocean views and delicious food.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SEA180° Coastal Tavern (@sea180coastaltavern) on Aug 22, 2019 at 3:49pm PDT

There’s also Big Kahuna’s for cheap Hawaiian cuisine, Philippi’s Italian restaurant, Aroma Thai, and The Brigantine for seafood.

I love IB but I would still recommend the Central San Diego Beaches of Imperial Beach.  The biggest reason that I’d choose further north as opposed to Imperial Beach is if you plan on getting in the ocean due to how polluted the water is.

I know Wildcoast is working hard to fix this but I think it’s important to know that the pollution from the Tijuana River does cause beach closures in South Bay often , especially after any rainfall. If you aren’t planning on going in th water, then you’re good.

Where to Stay near South San Diego Beaches

For an authentic Imperial Beach stay, Pier South Resort offers beachfront rooms, stunning sunset views, a pool, spa, and exceptional dining at Sea 180. Hotel Del Coronado, iconic but pricey, offers a taste of 50’s luxury if desired.

Other recommendations in Coronado and IB include:

North County Inland

North County Inland consists of the neighborhoods of Poway, Escondido, Ramona, and Julian. Some of the residential areas near here include Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and Rancho Santa Fe.

There are three main draws to this area.

My favorite is to hike Iron Mountain , but it can get crowded on the weekends so keep this in mind. My favorite way to hike this is starting in the dark about 1 hour before sunrise and then watching the sunrise from the top.

Outdoor Adventure Guide to San Diego: Potato Chip Rock

Another popular hike is to Potato Chip Rock . Again, it can be super crowded but if you’re dying to hike it’s a good option.

The third is to visit the Wild Animal Park, which is also part of the San Diego GO Card .

There are a few other cool things to do out here that are in our Hiking Adventures Near San Diego blog.

South Bay Inland

Explore Victor’s former South Bay neighborhood – Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, and Eastlake. Exercise caution, avoiding night walks and road rage for safety.

With that being said, I wouldn’t recommend any tourist stay in South Bay.

Gentrification revitalized many areas, like Chula Vista with its craft breweries. However, staying there means being distant from my recommended activities. Eastlake offers pleasant Airbnb options amidst its suburban landscape. Yet, it’s packed with strip malls and fast-food joints, leading to traffic jams.

On the other hand, I would recommend Imperial Beach , especially staying at Sea 180.

Two things I do love in the South Bay though are Aquatica, the water park, and the concert venue currently called North Island Credit Union (it seems to change ownership every year).

This is a fun concert venue that we often take our kids to. I like that the seats in the grass are affordable and that even from here you can see the stage pretty well. Plus, the sunsets right before the concerts get going are quite amazing. If you want to save a lot of money, get there early to tailgate since the food and alcohol inside is pricey. Check here for a list of upcoming concerts.

Aquatica (formerly known as Knott’s Soak City) is also on the GO Card.

East County Inland

I purchased a 2003 Ford F350 Diesel truck and found my place in East County. While summers sizzle into the 90s or low 100s from July to October, the rest of the year is delightful. La Mesa, El Cajon, Santee, and Lakeside make East County an excellent base for exploration. Opt for La Mesa’s central location or consider the unique floating cabins at Santee Lakes Campground for camping. BNS Brewery and Distillery, a haven for country music lovers, offers live music, drinks, and outdoor games, and often hosts food trucks, making it a perfect spot for families.

Camp Smart: If camping at Santee Lakes, book in advance and consider the floating cabins for a unique experience.

One of the hidden gems in East County is Mission Trails . It has some pleasant hikes and a few challenging ones like Cowles Mountain, which can be insanely crowded (kinda a theme for hiking in San Diego). I think the best thing to do at Mission Trails is rock climb . If you don’t have gear or know how to climb, ask my friend Caleb at Stoneman Climbing about guiding you here for the day.

Hiking and Camping near San Diego: 2 Day Itinerary

If you go further east, past East County, you’ll find the neighborhoods of Alpine, Pine Valley, Ramona, and Julian.  These areas offer some great hikes, mountain biking, camping, and cool historic main streets with a fun hick vibe.

If you go a little further east than this, you’ll go over the mountains and drop into the desert of Ocotillo.  If you visit from November through April, I’d highly recommend spending a night or two out here.  Check out this blog for our favorite hikes and camping in Ocotillo and Ramona .

What About Tijuana

I used to go to TJ with Victor to party before we could drink legally in the States. Victor’s family loves the amazing and cheap food and drinks there! Here’s a list of some of the places our friend who lives in Tijuana recommends:

San Diego is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, with great weather, a thriving restaurant scene, and many attractions to visit. However, if you have mobility issues or simply don’t want to do a lot of walking, it can be tricky to find things to do. That’s where the Old Town Trolley tour comes in handy. This guided tour of San Diego’s top landmarks allows you to sit back and relax while learning about the city’s history, culture, and architecture. Whether you’re interested in history or culture, or simply having a good time, this tour will take you to some of the city’s must-see attractions.

Can you see San Diego in one day? + -

San Diego is one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in California. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, there’s something for everyone, from stunning beaches, world-class museums and cultural landmarks to a bustling nightlife and a welcoming atmosphere. But, for those of you who only have one day to discover it all, is it even possible? The answer is yes, and the quickest and easiest way to do it is by taking the Old Town Trolley Tour.

San Diego summer concert guide: 36 shows you won’t want to miss

Kelsea Ballerini performs onstage with four drag queens

From Erykah Badu and Kelsea Ballerini to Ben Harper, Lyle Lovett and Danny Elfman, musical choices abound

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The good news and bad news for music fans in San Diego this summer may depend largely on your appetite for travel — and how much you can afford to spend for tickets.

You’ll have to hit the road for Los Angeles if you want to attend the SoFi Stadium concerts by Taylor Swift, Metallica, Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran, or the Crypto.com Arena concerts by Drake and Madonna. That’s assuming you can shell out for the sky-high prices scalpers are demanding for these sold-out shows.

Happily, all these artists have performed here before. With any luck, they will again. In the meantime, San Diego’s live-music calendar has enough sound options this summer to ensure you won’t have to spend extra time and gas money driving across several county lines to attend them.

The choices here are multifold, starting with Sunday’s concurrent performances by Diana Ross (at The Shell) and Janet Jackson (at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre). Or in early August, when concerts featuring Rod Stewart, Cheap Trick, Trombone Shorty, Ziggy Marley, Mavis Staples, The Offspring, Beck and Smashing Pumpkins will all take place within a five-day period.

In the interest of expediency, our selections do not include performances that are already sold out. So, take a bow, blink-182, Diana Krall, Janet Jackson, Paramore, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jason Isbell, Peso Pluma, Tori Amos, Cigarettes After Sex, Boz Scaggs, Post Malone, They Might Be Giants, Lucy’s Fur Coat, Ghostland Observatory, Natalie Merchant, Coldplay, Morgan Wallen, et al.

Erykah Badu at 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands, Aug. 12, 2019)

Erykah Badu, with Yasin Bey

Neo-soul vocal standout Erykah Badu, a champion of Afrocentric empowerment, and Yasin Bey, the superb rapper and actor formerly known as Mos Def, both rose to prominence in the 1990s.

Each is noted for their artistic daring. Each boasts impressive, if inconsistent, track records. And each still has something left to prove. That should make their joint tour stop here both a victory lap and a statement of purpose. 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Pechanga Arena, 3500 Sports Arena Blvd., Midway District. $39.95-$129.95. axs.com

Kelsea Ballerini poses in Nashville, Tenn., on Jan. 30, 2020.

Kelsea Ballerini, with Chris Janson and Thompson Square

In a country-pop music world long dominated by rote formulas and cookie-cutter conformity, Kelsea Ballerini isn’t afraid to rock the boat. The native Tennessee singer-songwriter did so most recently in April hosting the 2023 CMT Music Awards, where she lamented “the ever-growing list of families, friends, survivors, witnesses and responders whose lives continue to forever be changed by gun violence.”

That night also saw Ballerini make a powerful statement against anti-LGBTQ legislation when she performed “If You Go Down (I’m Goin’ Down Too)” with four celebrity drag queens from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Expect the song to be a highlight of her open-air concert here. Noon June 18. San Diego Waterfront Park, downtown. $69 (general admission), $145 (VIP). tickets.countryonthecoast.com/event/country-on-the-coast-2023

Top San Diego jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos

Robert Bush All-Star Benefit Concert

The San Diego jazz community takes care of its own. Last August, some of the county’s most prominent musicians banded together to raise funds for respected jazz journalist Robert Bush after he was fitted with a pacemaker for his heart. Bush now faces an even bigger medical challenge as he battles Stage 4 cancer.

The lineup for this new fundraising concert includes trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, flutist Holly Hofmann and former Ella Fitzgerald/Sarah Vaughan pianist Mike Wofford, bassists Marshall Hawkins and Rob Thorsen, multilingual singer Allison Tucker Adams, pianists Joshua White and Mikan Zlatkovich, saxophonist Tripp Sprague, drummer Jim Plank, and more. 6 p.m. June 19. Tio Leo’s, 5302 Napa Street, Bay Park. (619) 542-2562. Admission is free, but donations for Bush will be accepted at the performance via checks, cash and Venmo. tioleos.com/music

Joshua Ray Walker, at Zilker Park, Oct, 16, 2022, Austin, Texas.

Joshua Ray Walker, with Jade Jackson

Texas singer-songwriter Joshua Ray Walker excels at singing rootsy country music that sounds nothing like his former punk band, Ottoman Turks. Better yet, he’s happy to subvert expectations at will, as Walker does repeatedly on his audacious fourth album, “What is It Even?”

The premise, in his words, boils down to: “What would Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ sound like by the Blues Brothers?” Walker provides a rousing answer on the album, which also features winning versions of Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You,” Beyoncé ‘s “Halo,” Cher’s “Believe” and other similarly unlikely songs that he transforms with admirable skill and wit. 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd., Middletown. $20-$25 (must be 21 or older to attend). casbahmusic.com

Lyle Lovett & His Large Band

A versatile singer-songwriter, Lyle Lovett has a supple voice, a wonderfully wry sense of humor and a first-rate band anchored by the renowned drummer Russ Kunkel.

Whether performing boogie-woogie romps, bluesy ballads, gospel rave-ups or aching country ballads, this Texas-bred troubadour makes a lasting musical impression. His latest album, last year’s enchanting “12th of June,” features two songs inspired by his young children — “Pants Is Overrated” and “Pig Meat Man.” 8 p.m. July 4. Mariachi Champaña Nevin

San Diego International Mariachi Summit, with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán, Mariachi Champaña Nevin, San Diego Binational Symphony, Ballet Folklórico Internacional

Jeff Nevin founded Southwestern College’s mariachi music program in 1998, two years after launching San Diego County’s first high school mariachi group. Armed with a doctorate in music from UC San Diego, where he studied with such celebrated composers as Roger Reynolds and Chinary Ung, he deftly blurred musical borders with his groundbreaking work, Mariachi Concerto.

The 27th annual San Diego International Mariachi Summit — like its previous editions — is being spearheaded by Nevin. Funds raised by the labor-of-love event will go to the Mariachi Scholarship Foundation, which annually gives out $25,000 to deserving students. 7:30 p.m. July 14. Grammy Award-winning Mailian singer Oumou Sangare, Nov. 2, 2021 in Oslo, Norway.

Oumou Sangare

Malian music legend Oumou Sangaré sounds mesmerizing even if you don’t understand a single one of her lyrics. The Grammy Award-winning vocal star performs largely in Bambara, her native tongue, and specializes in the intensely syncopated musical style known as Wassoulou.

A favorite collaborator of such disparate artists as Herbie Hancock and Béla Fleck, Sangaré is a noted feminist and social activist. But she speaks loudest in song, performing with a gloriously expressive voice so rarely heard in San Diego that I can’t recall when — or if — Sangaré last gave a concert here. 8 p.m. July 21. Epstein Family Amphitheater, University of California San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla. $35-$45. amphitheater.ucsd.edu

Yussef Dayes, Newport Jazz Festival, Fort Adams State Park on July 30, 2022, Newport, Rhode Island.

Yussef Dayes

A protégé of fusion-jazz drum great Billy Cobham, London-born Yussef Dayes is a potent drummer who is just as adept playing Afrobeat, funk and hip-hop as he is electronic music, grime and post-bop jazz inspired heavily by McCoy Tyner and Sun Ra.

Dayes’ U.S. solo debut album, “Black Classical Music,” is due out in September on Nonesuch Records. The 19-song album features such notable guests as American singer Leon Thomas, English saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings and Jamaican reggae singer Chronixx. It remains to be seen who is in Dayes’ touring band, but their concert here should be a memorable one. 8 p.m. July 25. Danny Elfman, Coachella Music Festival,April 16, 2022, Indio, California.

Danny Elfman

Do two concerts qualify as a tour? They do in the case of former Oingo Boingo singer-turned-award-winning film composer Danny Elfman. He’s following up his triumphant pair of performances at the 2022 Coachella Festival in Indio, with two SoCal dates, and the first is in San Diego.

The mini-tour — aptly billed as “From Boingo to Batman to Big Mess and Beyond!” — will team Elfman with a band that features San Diego’s Ilan Rubin on drums. The repertoire will be something of a multimedia career retrospective with such Oingo Bongo favorites as “Dead Man’s Party” mixed in with music from such Elfman-scored films as “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” “Batman,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and more. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3. North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, 2050 Entertainment Circle, Chula Vista. $39.50-$299. livenation.com

Grammy-winning artist Leon Bridges

Bleached San Diego, featuring Leon Bridges, Joji, Omar Apollo, and more

Waterfront Park has become the go-to venue for a growing number of music festivals. The newest addition, Bleached San Diego, will debut with 32 acts performing over two days.

Leon Bridges, the Aug. 5 headliner, is an impassioned singer who puts a fresh spin on vintage soul and R&B. Joji, the Aug. 6 headliner, is a Japanese-born YouTube comedian-turned-lo-fi-singer/songwriter. The lineup also includes such rising young artists as Ethel Cain and Caroline Polachek who are worth arriving early to hear. Noon Aug. 5 and Aug. 6. San Diego Waterfront Park, 1500 Pacific Highway, downtown. $95 (one day pass), $175-$195 (two-day pass). showclix.com/event/tight-knit-presents-bleached

Smokey Robinson,149th Kentucky Derby Barnstable Brown Gala, May 5, 2023, Louisville, Kentucky.

Smokey Robinson

How is 83-year-old Motown vocal icon Smokey Robinson following up the release of his new album, “Gasms,” which came out in January?

With a multi-state summer concert trek that includes a tour-concluding date at Pala Resort Casino. Robinson, who has penned and recorded more classics than all but a very few other singer-songwriters, may not hit all the high notes quite as effortlessly as in previous decades. But judging by his San Diego concert at The Shell last summer, he still has the ability to inspire goose bumps. 8 p.m. Aug 19. Pala Starlight Amphitheatre, 11154 Highway 76, Pala. $85-$135. palacasino.com .

Gregory Porter, Blue Note Jazz Festival, Sony Hall on June 4, 2018 in NYC

Gregory Porter

Two-time Grammy Award-winner Gregory Porter grew up singing gospel music in Bakersfield. But it was while attending San Diego State University on a full football scholarship that this hulking singer found his artistic footing. He went on to become a wonderfully soulful jazz singer who is now internationally acclaimed for his golden voice and for his insightful lyrics about love, life and social and political challenges.

Porter’s concert at UCSD’s Epstein Family Amphitheater will put him a short walk away from the campus’ music department, where his key music mentor — Kamau Kenyatta — still teaches. Is an onstage reunion in the offing? We’ll soon find out. 8 p.m. Aug. 18. Epstein Family Amphitheater, UC San Diego 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla. $25-$75. amphitheater.ucsd.edu

Ben Harper February 27, 2020 in Auckland, New Zealand

Concert of Hope, with Ben Harper

Ben Harper has long sung out with palpable passion about the state of the world. That makes him especially well-suited to headline this year’s benefit concert on behalf of Doors of Change, the San Diego nonprofit that — since its inception in 2001 — has raised more than $4.5 million to help homeless and at-risk youth here.

Such memorable Harper songs as “People Lead,” “I’ll Rise,” “Serve Your Soul” and “Better Way” may resonate even more strongly at a concert designed to raise funds and spirits alike. Ditto, “Wide Open Light,” the gently hopeful title track from his new album, which concludes with the couplet: “Mistakes I am destined to repeat ‘til I get them right / Walk with me into the wide open light.” 7 p.m. Sept. 9. Epstein Family Amphitheater, UC San Diego 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla. $65-$350. amphitheater.ucsd.edu/event/doors-of-change-ben-harper/

Bruno Major

Bruno Major

UK native Bruno Major — not to be confused with Hawaiian native Bruno Mars — seems to be two musicians in one. A crooning singer who writes and performs mellow ballads about heartbreak, he tends to kick into high gear with his guitar solos, which have a bluesy bite and jazzy fluidity.

Major has collaborated with such disparate artists as They Might Be Giants, John Legend, Tori Kelly, Lianne La Havas and Billy Eilish’s brother and songwriting partner, Finneas. While his recordings tend toward undue restraint, Major’s live shows allow him to draw from his studies as a jazz and classical guitarist. The contrast is intriguing. 7 p.m. Sept. 15. Observatory North Park, 2891 University Ave. North Park. $66. livenation.com

Arooj Aftab, Glastonbury Festival, England, June 24, 2022

Love in Exile: Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, and Shahzad Ismaily

A 2023 Grammy Award-winner, Pakistani-American singer and songwriter Arooj Aftab thrives by blurring borders, figuratively and literally. She has two like-minded creative foils in Indian-American pianist and composer Vijay Iyer — a 2013 MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” honoree — and Pakistani-American synthesizer player Shahzad Ismaily.

Released this year, “Love in Exile,” is their first album together. Its richly textured soundscapes alternate slowly unfurling instrumental passages with Aftab’s haunting singing. The result is a case study in how intently listening is just as crucial for musicians as the notes they play. It remains to be seen where these three uniquely skilled artists take their songs on a concert stage, but the possibilities are enticing and then some. 8 p.m. Sept. 19. Epstein Family Amphitheater, UC San Diego 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla. $35–45. amphitheater.ucsd.edu

Don Byron, clarinet, July 14th 2000 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, Netherlands.

Don Byron Quartet

One of the most gifted and eclectic clarinetists to emerge in the past 30 years, Don Byron has collaborated with everyone from Suzanne Vega, Mandy Patinkin and the heavy-metal band Living Colour to such avant-jazz greats as Anthony Braxton and Marilyn Crispell.

As a solo artist and band leader, Byron soars equally whether performing klezmer or Afro-Cuban music, gospel or swing, classical or ‘60s-drenched soul, traditional jazz or cutting-edge explorations. The rarity of his performances here should make his return especially notable. 7 p.m. Sept. 21. UC San Diego’s Park & Market, 1100 Market Street, downtown. $25-$35. parkandmarket.ucsd.edu/events/

AJ Croce

Croce Plays Croce

San Diego-bred singer-songwriter AJ Croce was eight days shy of his second birthday when his father, singer-songwriter Jim Croce, died in a plane crash at the age of 30.

AJ (short for Adrian James) avoided performing any of his late dad’s music until he had established himself as a solo artist in his own right, with multiple albums and tours to his credit. His voice, even when singing classics by his father, remains his own. 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23. Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, 2241 Shelter Island Drive, Shelter Island. $56.50. ticketmaster.com

Check Out This Delicious Mexico City Itinerary for Foodies

Mexico City Itinerary Foodies - Al Pastor grill with meat and pineapple on top

Where is the best food in Mexico? This question is impossible to answer. What makes Mexico City my top recommendation as foodie destination in Mexico is that you can find food from every corner of the country in this city and experience a culinary “road trip” as you eat your way around the city.

I recently returned from a press trip to Mexico City with Cross Border Xpress (CBX), the Tourism Board of Mexico City , and AeroMexico , where I experienced some of the scrumptious food this amazing city has to offer. Our 2.5 day itinerary was filled with delicious treats and foodie adventures, from food tours and fine dining to street food and a farm-to-table experience. If you love Mexican food and are planning a trip to Mexico City soon, this Mexico City itinerary for foodies might be helpful for you.

Selection of tacos and salsas at a taco shop in Mexico City

Day 1: Food Tour in Colonia Roma

We flew out of Tijuana (so easy with CBX and much cheaper than flying from the US) in the morning and arrived in Mexico City in the afternoon. We hit the ground running and joined a walking food tour around Colonia Roma with Sabores Mexico Food Tours .

This 4-hour food tour with Alma was the perfect way to dive into the food scene of the city. Colonia Roma is such a cool neighborhood. Here, you will find tree-lined avenues that invite you to stroll under the trees and dozens of unique restaurants on every corner.

Fresh ceviche with nopales in a blue bowl - food tour in Mexico City

Alma shared with us a little of the history of the neighborhood and showed us some of the stunning art deco houses, but most importantly, the best places to eat in Colonia Roma.

Art Deco style atrium at house in Colonia roma CDMX

The 5 restaurants and 1 coffee shop we visited were unique and different, yet they all had something in common: an owner who followed their passion for sharing good food with the people in their community. Many of them came to Mexico City with nothing and started with a little food stall or restaurant offering a comida corrida – a simple, home-style set menu that changes every day or a small selection of specialties from their home region.

logo and menu of tres galeones taco shop in colonia roma CDMX

The competition between small eateries and food stalls in Mexico City is fierce, so they had to stand out and provide delicious food every single day. Some of the restaurants we tried have been open for several decades, so you know they passed the test of time and the discerning taste of the local community.

This food tour was a fantastic way to dive into the Mexico City food scene and a perfect way to walk and eat our way through the beautiful neighborhood of Colonia Roma. I highly recommend it.

With full bellies and a fabulous first impression of Mexico City, we made it to our hotel Galeria Plaza Reforma and after a quick night cap, we called it an early night.

Day 2: Boat Tour & Organic Farm To Table Adventure in Xochimilco

After a delicious breakfast buffet at our hotel, we drove about 45 minutes to Xochimilco. Xochimilco is an area south of Mexico City that consists of over 47 square miles of canals and floating islands. These floating farms are called chinampas and were man-made in 919 A.D.. They became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 because of their cultural importance as one of the most efficient and sustainable ways of cultivation.

Colorful wooden boats on Heron sitting by the banks of the canals at Xochimilco

When I first saw this on the itinerary, I wasn’t really looking forward to it, as it’s known as a party boat destination. Locals and tourists go there to rent boats, drink, and party as they float down the canals. Not really my cup of tea.

But then I found out that we were doing an eco-tour with Rutopia instead. This tour included a visit to a floating farm, picking our own veggies for lunch, and learning about the famous Axolotl amphibian. That definitely was more my jam.

We got onto one of the colorful wooden gondolas and started drifting down the main canal. As it was a weekday, it was a lot less busy than on weekends or holidays.

There was also a small festival going on. Boats were tied together in a huge flotilla surrounding the floating stage in the middle. We saw a row of girls dressed in traditional, colorful costumes participating in a beauty pageant and people clapping to Ranchero music in the background.

Vendors on boats were floating by selling mouthwatering snacks, delicious drinks, and stunning handicrafts. It reminded me a little of the floating markets in Thailand. A kaleidoscope of colors, smells, and sounds.

Colorful wooden boats on Heron sitting by the banks of the canals at Xochimilco

We passed the celebration and continued down the canal into a more quiet part of the canal system. The party boats were replaced with boats carrying locals and their goods to and from their floating farms.

It was so quiet and peaceful. We saw quite a bit of wildlife as well, including pelicans, herons, egrets, and ducks. It was almost surreal to think that we were technically still inside the city limits of a city with almost 9 million people.

flock of pelicans swimming in the canals at Xochimilco

After a while, we docked at a farm and met a local farming family. We learned about how the chinampas were built and how they have been farming on them for over 1100 years. They grow organic fruits and vegetables and we got to pick our own veggies for our lunch.

This farm is also one of the first places, where the famous Axolotl amphibian was successfully rehabilitated in the wild. Isn’t this just the most adorable creature?

White Axolotl amphibien in an aquarium

Then, the family prepared a fantastic traditional lunch for us with the veggies we had just harvested. It doesn’t get fresher than that. We had rice, beans, a beautiful salad, and amaranth fritters. Everything was simple yet so delicious. The ingredients spoke for themselves and were the star of the lunch.

As a foodie, I love seeing where the local food comes from and the traditional ways of farming and preparation of the ingredients. If you love nature and have an interest in where your food comes from, I highly recommend this tour.

After our boating adventure, we drove back to the city. Due to rush hour traffic, it took a little while, but we got to see some iconic spots of the city along the way, such as the stunning University of Mexico City. After that, we had a little free time. We came across a Bavarian Beer Garden inside a BMW Motorcycle repair shop. I guess you can take the girl out of Bavaria, but you can’t take Bavaria out of the girl 😉

Dinner that night was at Cardenal Restaurant San Angel , a restaurant that opened in 1969 and combines traditional Mexican dishes with a French bistro atmosphere. The historic building adds to the restaurant’s charm, and the service was on point. My favorite dish was a thin black bean soup with vermicelli noodles. It was so unique and flavorful. I will have to try to recreate this dish at home!

Day 3: Frida Kahlo Art & Food Tour

Sometimes, when you travel, unexpected things happen and you just have to make the best of it. On our last full day in Mexico City, we were supposed to follow in Frida Kahlo’s footsteps and learn more about the famous artist, her life, her art, and her favorite foods on this fabulous tour with ViveFrida . However, there was a strike affecting many museums in the city, so our tour organizers had to pivot at the last minute. They did a fantastic job, considering the short notice and we still had a fabulous day.

Mexico City Main Square called Zocalo with Basilica and Mexican Flag

We started our tour at the main square of Mexico City, called Zócalo. At first, the main square looks exactly like many main squares in capital cities: A basilica, the president’s palace, and other government buildings around an empty square. But then you turn around the corner, and all of a sudden, you lay your eyes on a full-size Aztec pyramid. That definitely is something special.

Unfortunately, our next stops, the Convento de San Juan Bautista, Jardín de los Coyotes, and the León Trotsky’s House Museum, were closed that day due to the strike.

But we were lucky and the two (in my eyes) most important stops on the itinerary were still on: Lunch and the Blue House.

Our lunch consisted of a multi-course meal with Frida’s favorite foods. Frida loved to cook and entertain and learned most of her cooking skills from her husband’s first wife. Some of her favorite dishes were moles, fried grasshoppers, and other traditional Mexican dishes, washed down with a generous helping of Mezcal. It was delicious!

Appetizer with three small pots of different Mole sauces

After our lunch, we walked through the quaint Coyoacán neighborhood to the famous Casa Azul , the private residence of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The museum leads you through various aspects of Frida Kahlo’s life and you get a much better understanding of who she really was. It is heartbreaking to learn about her health struggles throughout her life and the devastation she felt when she could not bear children. But it also shows her resilience and strength, her passion for art, fashion and food, and her love for Diego.

Explore the Local Street Food

Of course, I can’t write a Mexico City Itinerary for Foodies without mentioning Street Food. This city is the Street Food Capital of North America and if you want to explore the food scene of this city, you have to eat your way through the booths and stalls of small vendors.

I wish we had done a dedicated street food tour, but I tried to sample as much in between our scheduled itinerary as I could. Luckily, most of those treats are just a bite or two, so there is always room for a little sample.

Big pot of stewing meat at a taco shop in Mexico City

Usually, each food stall has a specialty and they don’t have a large menu. They do one thing and they do it well. While in San Diego, many taco shops have a little bit of everything, these food stalls are very niche. There is one stall that sells only Al Pastor tacos, another one sells Chilaquiles, and the next one has a big bubbling pot of stewed meats, including my favorite: Suadero.

Selection of tacos and salsas at a taco shop in Mexico City

My favorite spot I tried street food was in the Coyoacan neighborhood. Just off the main square is a street where you will find one street food stall after the other. Bring cash and be prepared to practice your Spanish (or download Google Translate). Just follow your nose and try what looks good to you. Don’t forget the golden rule of Street Food: Only eat at stalls that have a long line of locals.

Next time I am in the city, I will definitely join a dedicated street food tour, though, and I can’t wait!

Tips for Traveling to Mexico City

How to get there.

Getting to Mexico City from San Diego is super easy. Of course, you can fly out of San Diego, but I highly recommend flying out of Tijuana, using Cross Border Xpress .

Not only is it a lot cheaper but also so much easier. You simply park your car , show your CBX ticket and boarding pass, walk over the covered bridge into Mexico, go through immigration and then you are in the Tijuana Airport and can check your bag. It usually takes me about 25 minutes from parking to my gate, including checking a bag. And the best part? You are done with immigration and don’t have to wait in long lines at your destination.

We flew AeroMexico and you can definitely feel the difference between this airline and other, more budget-focused airlines. The seats were more comfortable and definitely wider than on other airlines, and you also had decent legroom. There was free onboard entertainment and refreshments.

Where to Stay

We stayed at the Galeria Plaza Reforma right in the heart of the city. The stunning Angel of Independence Column was just one block away, and the hotel is located in the corners of the neighborhoods Colonia Roma Norte and Juarez, and the fabulous Zona Rosa, the colorful LGBTQIA+ neighborhood of Mexico City, was all just a short walk away.

Mexico City is usually just one big traffic jam, so I highly recommend staying as centrally as possible. That way, you don’t waste your precious time stuck in traffic when you could be eating delicious treats.

The Galeria Plaza Reforma is a 4 star hotel and was perfect for our quick trip to Mexico City. The rooms were spacious and spotless and had everything you needed. Unfortunately, our Mexico City itinerary was so jam-packed that I didn’t have time to check out the rooftop pool. But those pictures look absolutely dreamy, don’t you think?

I hope this Mexico City itinerary for foodies helped you get inspired for your Mexico City foodie adventure. If you have been to Mexico City, please share your favorite spots to eat, so I can put them on my list for my next trip!
