South Africa Tours & Vacations

Silhouette of African safari scene with giraffe, elephant, rhino, and vehicle at sunset

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

9. Blyde River Canyon

This canyon is every bit as stunning as America’s Grand Canyon, yet in a different way. Lush greenery grows over most of the area and a diverse range of animal and plant life is supported within its deep cliffs and valleys. It’s difficult to take a bad photo here, as Mother Nature has kindly provided a near perfect canvas.

10. Kruger National Park

This iconic national park has some of the ‘most-photographed’ animals in the world. Visitors love capturing shots of lions hunting prey, elephants drinking at waterholes and cheetahs sleeping under trees. Mesmerizing amber sunsets and rolling savanna only add to the atmospheric magic of it all.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. United States generally has strict customs laws.

Things to buy in South Africa

1. Zulu beads

Zulu beadwork acts as a form of communication for Zulu people but visitors are usually drawn to buy beads for their vibrancy and visual appeal. Necklaces, bracelets and head pieces are particularly popular.

2. Township art

This urban art form involves recycling common landfill items like soft drink cans, telephone wire, paper and tires, and turning them into jewelry, ornaments, key rings, bags and toys. Township art makes a unique souvenir or gift as it supports local artists and keeps excess waste out of landfill.

3. Gourmet goodies

The Cape area has loads of amazing purveyors and food producers, so this is the best place to stock up on chutneys, jams and preserves made from local mango, fig, oranges and grapes.

4. Rooibos products

This caffeine-free herbal tea has been drunk in South Africa for generations, and is a cheap souvenir option for friends and family back home. You will also be able to find rooibos skincare and beauty products too.

Festivals and events

Freedom day.

This national public holiday commemorates the anniversary of South Africa’s constitution democracy – a very important sentiment to Africans living in the post-apartheid world. Marked by military flyovers, song, dance and other entertainment, this is a time of celebration, peace and unity.

Cape Town Jazz Festival

Cape Town shines with two days of hot jazz performances from African entertainers at this very popular festival. Although many of the shows sell out well in advance, the free outdoor concert ensures no one misses out.

Knysna Oyster Festival

This annual festival held over 10 days in winter offers so much more than oysters. Sure, indulge in some oysters but don’t forget about the fun runs, marathons, wine tastings, eating competitions, live music and cooking demos.

Game drive safari and beach holiday.

Yes, paying a bit extra for a tour in South Africa is absolutely worth every penny and, in some cases, a must to unveil the country's hidden treasures. Given the challenge of reaching remote areas independently, tour operators provide exclusive access to these difficult to reach spots. Therefore, choosing a guided tour is the most common decision among the majority of travelers. Local experts and tour guides can arrange your entire trip, covering transportation, lodging, dining, activities, excursions, tickets, and more. Opting for a package tour creates a worry-free journey, with every detail sorted out and an up-front price tag.

Navigating the travel costs of South Africa often reveals that tours can be a pocket-friendly alternative to independent travel, depending on the tour's specifics such as the destinations, travel style, duration, and other factors. Naturally, every tour and independent trip will be different and have its own cost. Typically, tour providers bundle an array of offerings into an attractively competitive price, often rivalling the expenditure of an independent journey with a similar level of luxury. The average daily expenses for a tour in South Africa is calculated to be approximately $365, yet numerous tours fall below this price. Prices for tours in South Africa span from $150 to $15,094. When comparing tour costs against independent trips in South Africa, it's wise to factor in that most organized guided tours include accommodations, transport, guides, meals, entry tickets, and much more. So, when comparing tour packages with trips planned by yourself, keep in mind the differences because it's not always an equal comparison. To paint an accurate picture of the trip and its costs, make sure you know what is included in the tour package before comparing its price against your own trip plans. Also, diving deep into the costs of independent travel in South Africa is also necessary to find an accurate comparison.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in South Africa

Travelers often face a tough decision between opting for an organized tour package or planning an independent trip. Traveling in South Africa during 2024 or 2025 presents an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the wide range of enticing deals and sales available with organized tour packages. These guided tours offer comprehensive packages that include accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, food, and other essential travel amenities, ensuring great value for money. Additionally, knowledgeable guides accompany you throughout the journey, providing valuable insights, and relieving the burden of planning every detail of the trip. Conversely, independent travel provides the advantage of greater flexibility and control over your travel plans, allowing you to adjust your schedule and budget as needed. It also allows for a deeper immersion in local cultures and the exploration of off-the-beaten-path destinations that are often not covered in tour packages.

What are the benefits of a package tour to South Africa?

Opting for a tour while traveling brings numerous benefits. One of the best parts of a tour is the unmatched convenience of having every aspect of your journey meticulously arranged. With transportation, accommodations, and activities planned out, you can enjoy a stress-free experience, knowing that all the essentials have been taken care of. This eliminates the need to worry about finding suitable accommodations, organizing logistics, or potentially overlooking any key attractions. Furthermore, the majority of tours offer all-inclusive pricing, allowing you to know the exact cost of your trip beforehand. Benefits of a tour include

  • fixed budget
  • reliable service and schedule
  • knowledgeable guides
  • comfortable amenities
  • not having to plan
  • meeting other like-minded travelers
  • eliminating risks

What are the benefits of independent travel in South Africa?

Freedom, control, and flexibility are the main benefits of independent travel. When you travel independently, you have the freedom to select your own lodging, visit the attractions that appeal to you, dine at your preferred times, and choose your preferred mode of transportation. Making these decisions yourself also gives you greater control over your budget, itinerary, schedule, and the level of luxury you desire while exploring new destinations. Benefits also include

  • flexible schedules
  • flexible budget
  • in-depth cultural opportunities
  • off-the-beaten-path destinations

To secure your tour to South Africa, it is advisable to plan and book well in advance, preferably a few months or more ahead. While some individuals reserve their tours up to a year ahead, based on our experience, reserving your spot approximately 6 to 9 months prior to departure is usually sufficient. Many popular tours tend to fill up quickly, so booking early guarantees your place on the trip. Additionally, booking early can often lead to significant cost savings, as tour companies frequently offer early booking sales and discounted prices. However, it's important to note that some tour companies may offer last-minute discounts for tours that still have available spots. While this may be tempting, waiting for such discounts carries the risk of missing out on a spot if the tour becomes fully booked.

The number of travelers on tours in South Africa can vary greatly, with group sizes ranging from 4 to 162 people. On average, a tour consists of 17 participants. However, it is important to note that the quality and price of a tour are not necessarily dependent on the number of people.

To fully experience South Africa, it is advisable to plan for around 7 days, as this is the typical duration of organized tour packages. Tours in South Africa can range from 2 to 21 days, or even longer. While longer tours may have a higher upfront cost, they become more economical on a daily basis. Additionally, longer tours provide ample time to visit multiple destinations at a comfortable pace, making them a more rewarding choice.

Where do group tours go in South Africa?

Cape Town, Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Stellenbosch, Tsitsikamma National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park are the most visited stops for organized tours in South Africa. These destinations are some of the major highlights of the country and should not be missed.

What tour and travel companies offer packages to South Africa?

A wide range of tour companies offer trips to South Africa. Some companies are large international brands, while others are more regionally or locally based. The benefits and challenges of each company can vary based on its size and level of experience. International companies often have well-established reputations, and tours are rarely canceled due to low turnout. However, they might not have the same local perspectives and insights that you'll find with a smaller, locally based company.

The most popular companies offering tours in South Africa are Timeline Travel DMC , ATC Group , Across Africa Tours & Travel , Amatungulu Tour , and Matadi Africa and Travel Tours . Some are larger than others, while some are focused on specific regions or types of trips.

What is the best tour company offering trips to South Africa?

Amatungulu Tour stands out as the top tour operator in South Africa, boasting the highest-rated tours. Their commitment to excellence and memorable adventures has resulted in a large number of rave reviews from satisfied travelers.

But where do you go to make the most of your safari experience? We will mention our recommendations below.

The luxury safari tours in South Africa for the best wildlife

South Africa is home to an incredible assortment of African animals.

For example, the Dulini Moya Lodge , in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, offers one of the highest chances in Africa to see elusive leopards.

The Dulini Moya offers you luxury accommodation, delicious cuisine and personalized service in this incredible reserve.

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve will be mentioned my most safari professionals as a top option for South Africa safari destinations.

The Sabi Sands, as the reserve is affectionately known, joined the private game reserves surrounding the famous Kruger National Park into one wildlife paradise of a protected area.

This incredible region is in fact part of the Great Kruger National Park region.

The Sabi Sands shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park. The difference, however, is that a limited number of guests at the few lodges in the Sabi Sands have exclusive access. Also, the safari operators can venture off-road to give you the best wildlife sightings.

Not only this, but because of sensitive viewing practices and the high protection, some animals (notably leopards) are far more easily observed than in other South African areas.

Click the short video below for an introduction to the Dulini Moya .

Dulini Moya Lodge

In addition to the Dulini Moya , there are some other lodges offering the same high standard of comfort, service and guiding. These include the Dulini River Lodge and Leadwood Lodge .

You can find these in the same wildlife-rich Sabi Sand Game Reserve offering almost incomparable experiences of the Big 5.

The Dulini River Lodge , as the name suggests, is positioned a little closer to the Sand River, which gave the name to the reserve. Designed with couples, solo adventurers, and small groups in mind, this is another recommendation for your South Africa safari tour.

And if you’d like a little more exclusivity, there is the Dulini Leadwood Lodge .

Dulini Leadwood Lodge, South Africa

You will find the Dulini Leadwood Lodge in the same region as the Dulini River Lodge . However, this luxury safari lodge offers only four spacious and exclusive suites. This gives you a little more privacy and exclusivity in the Sabi Sands.

Top Safari Tours for the Madikwe Reserve

Madikwe is a fantastic 80,000 hectare Big-5, wildlife-rich reserve in South Africa. And there are 3 safari tours we recommend for your experience.

Jaci’s Tree Lodge

Jacis Tree Lodge

Jaci’s Tree Lodge is a remarkable destination that seamlessly blends with the natural beauty of the Madikwe Reserve.

Click the video above for a quick introduction.

The lodge itself is part of the experience. The elevated design makes it seem like you are part of the surrounding forest. This creates a fantastic contrast after your day-time experiences exploring the grasslands.

From the comfortable lodge, you will explore this incredible reserve on captivating twice-daily game drives. You will be scouting for the reserve’s incredible animal sightings. In addition to game drives, you can enjoy walking safaris for a more immersive experience.

As well as iconic lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhino, you can find African wild dogs, cheetahs, brown and spotted hyenas, giraffes, hippos, and numerous antelope species. There are also porcupines, warthogs, servals, baboons and over 350 bird species to find.

As a point of note, you will find the rhinos in the Madikwe all have their horns intact, which you will find in few other South African reserves. This is due to the less invasive (but effective) protection methods in the Madikwe.

Jaci’s Safari Lodge

Offering the same exciting experiences of the reserve as Jacis Tree Lodge above, including the walking safaris and game drives, the Safari Lodge is located in a more open area on the grasslands.

Indian Ocean

Also known as Southern Africa, is the geographical region that is located in the south of the continent, framed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. South Africa is home to some of the oldest cultures in the world which are represented by small tribes called primitive for their way of life, beliefs and spiritual activities. In this region you will also find a large part of the continent's white population mostly of European origin, as the countries in this region like those in much of the continent were European colonies. It includes the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Brave the world’s 4th highest bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge with South Africa tour packages. Or visit the Cango caves, the largest show caves in Africa developed as a result of faulting.

This vibrant country certainly has something for everyone to enjoy a memorable vacation. At Exoticca, we provide the tools you need to embark on the experience of a lifetime without concern.

Top points of interest in South Africa

Locally called Mzansi , this country has a diverse population and equally varied landscapes, languages, and iconic attractions. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the stars of the show.

Kruger National Park

In the northeast of the country , a trip to South Africa isn’t complete without a visit to this legendary reserve. The park presents an amazing density of wild animals like the Big Five and many more.

Spend up to three days exploring this incredible park and the bushveld punctuated by mountains and tropical forests. It’s an ornithologist’s dream , too, with eagles, vultures, storks, colorful sunbirds, barbets, rollers, and ostrich in the wild.

The “mother city” is one of the most beautiful metropolitan areas in the world and central to South Africa holiday packages. Iconic Table Mountain is an obvious must-see, along with the V&A Waterfront, Two Oceans Aquarium, and Kirstenbosch gardens.

Visit the spartan conditions on Robben Island to see where Nelson Mandela spent almost 27 years . Don’t forget the museums, hiking the mountain trails, or visiting the townships for an authentic experience.

When it comes to food and drink, you’re spoiled for choice. The Cape is known as the wine country , and our South Africa tours include packages to Stellenbosch, Paarl, or quaint Franschhoek. These wineries are a hugely popular day out in quite fantastic surroundings and mouthwatering delights.

If the beach is more your speed, hang out in trendy Camps Bay, learn to surf in Muizenberg, or swim with African Jackass penguins at Boulders. Modern, cosmopolitan, gorgeous, and chic , Cape Town regularly rates among the coolest cities in the world.

Cape of Good Hope

The Cape of Good Hope refers to the western tip at the end of the peninsula . It ends in a rocky promontory called Cape Point. Visit this part of Table Mountain National Park on our South Africa tours.

Cape Point is often mistaken for the most southerly point of the continent, but Cape Agulhas, about 100 miles east, owns that honor. There are towering cliffs and unique flora as endemic fynbos. Watch out for the baboons and visit the lighthouse for epic views.

About 260 miles (418 km) east of Cape Town , in the Klein Karoo, you’ll find the world’s ostrich capital. Learn more about the flightless bird and its development on a South African tour. Try an ostrich omelet that feeds 15, or sample an ostrich steak or biltong, the local dried meat snack.

Nestled between two mountain ranges, take in the unique semi-desert beauty and colors. It’s home to the Cango Caves , the country’s largest. A series of dripstone caverns open into enormous halls with stalactite and stalagmite formations that developed over millions of years.

Other attractions

Our carefully curated itineraries allow free time during your South Africa tour, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Discover South Africa off the beaten path for a unique experience that you’ll never forget.

A South Africa trip also offers evidence of the earliest humans in the Sterkfontein caves , often called the Cradle of Humankind. In the northern Cape, the landscape changes with the red dunes of the Kalahari desert and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Visit the educational Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg to learn about the country’s turbulent history. Get lost on the Wild Coast of the Transkei, go whale-spotting near Hermanus, visit Addo Elephant Park, or laze on the golden beaches and warm water of Durban.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to tour South Africa?

Warm summers last from November to March and provide excellent conditions for the beach. It also offers the best weather for the cape peninsula and game parks. You could also embark on your South Africa tours from the USA from May to September for cooler temperatures that are ideal for game drives.

Why is South Africa a great tourist attraction?

It’s a scenic marvel with dramatic coastlines, stark mountains, bushveld, desert, canyons, and Cape Town. This country has modern cities and infrastructure, mind-boggling nature, incredible fusion cuisine, bungee jumping, cage diving, and 2,000 miles of pristine coastline.

How many days is enough to see South Africa?

South Africa is almost twice the size of Texas, so the best South Africa tours include the must-see attractions, and we build our itineraries around them. Most tours to the Rainbow Nation are 12–14 days, minimum.

Is South Africa affordable to tour?

Yes, it is. Travelers assume the country is expensive due to the relatively high cost of flights and the luxury the country offers. However, the weakness of the Rand (ZAR) makes it an affordable destination.

What are the top 5 most visited places in South Africa?

The top five most visited spots in South Africa include the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain, Kruger National Park, uShaka Marine World, and the Drakensberg.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Blyde River Canyon, Namaqualand, wine tours, Robben Island, township trips, and the Cape of Good Hope also deserve a spot on any respectable South Africa tour package.

FLIGHT INFORMATION

Your departure flights from the U.S. to South Africa and back are on the below airlines. We recommend that you check in three-and-a-half hours before departure.

ADVANCE SEAT ASSIGNMENT

The above airlines do not assign seats in advance. Seat assignment can only be arranged when you check-in at the airport.

BOOKING YOUR OWN FLIGHTS

Booking your own flighs has advantages like flying from your home airport, choosing your own seats, upgrading your seats, and using and collecting airline miles. Tour-only travelers are responsible for arranging their entry and exit flights, as well as their arrival and departure transfers. Unused land services including those caused by air schedule changes and delays are non-refundable and smarTours cannot be held responsible.

When booking your flights, please note that our tour starts in Cape Town and ends in Johannesburg. We recommend that you:

  • Fly into Cape Town International Airport (CPT)
  • Fly out of O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB)

BOOKING YOUR OWN TRANSFERS

In South Africa, private taxis are reliable ways to get to/from the airport. You may also check the airport’s website for additional information on how to book a private transfer in advance.

TOUR MEETING POINT

If you have booked our air package, your Tour Director will be waiting for you in the arrivals area near the point you clear customs.

PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION

You must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel. All visitors are required by the South African immigration authorities to have a minimum of two consecutive blank visa entry pages in their passport. Insufficient pages in the passport normally results in denied boarding or denial of entry upon arrival, and the person is likely to be detained pending return to their country of origin. Visa is not required for U.S. passport holders. Non-US citizens should check with the South Africa and Kingdom of Eswatini consulates as to the most current visa requirements. Please remember that it is your responsibility to obtain the necessary travel documents before the trip.

TICKETS AND FINAL DOCUMENTS

Final instructions, documents, and travel tips will be emailed to you 10–14 days before the scheduled start of your tour. If you have not received your final documents, please check your spam folder or contact smarTours.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

Please consult your personal physician or local public health authorities regarding taking anti-malaria pills, as well as other recommendations.

South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere and has the reverse seasons to those of the U.S. The weather is temperate, even in the winter. Overnight temperatures are 10-20 degrees lower. Here’s what you can expect:

  • April–September: Highs in the 60s and 70s.
  • October–March: Highs in the 70s and 80s.

NON-INCLUDED MEALS

Food costs in South Africa are quite reasonable compared to the U.S. In Cape Town, you may dine at either of the hotels used on this tour or in a nearby restaurant recommended by your guide. The V&A Waterfront also offers a fantastic range of dining options. Your hotel will accept credit cards for your non-included meals.

CREDIT CARDS AND LOCAL CURRENCY

The official currency in South Africa is the South African rand (R, ZAR). Hotels, restaurants, and many stores accept credit cards and credit cards are the most convenient way to carry money in the region. However, for “street shopping” and incidentals you will need local currency. For convenience, and the best exchange rates, we recommend withdrawing local currency at an in-store ATM. Avoid using ATMs in the street. You may also exchange money at your local bank before you travel. The official currency in Eswatini is the Swazi lilangeni (SZL) which is fixed to the Rand. The South African rand is accepted throughout Eswatini and there is no need to exchange cash. It is recommended that you bring along cash in small denominations and that you alert your bank and credit card company of your travels.

Electricity

South Africa operates on 230 volts/50 Hz and uses plug types C, M, and N. Learn more about plug types, adapters, and converters. Please note South Africa has a system of “load shedding” which means power turns off to particular areas on a rotation due to the shortage in electricity supply. Most hotels, restaurants, shops and safari lodges have sufficient backup power in place to avoid major disruptions during load shedding. The impact on tourists is minimal.

Each passenger may bring one piece of checked-in luggage and one carry-on piece. Please check with the airline for the maximum weight and size for luggage. We recommend that you do not over-pack and that you take a variety of separates with climate and comfort in mind.

Robbie Williams heading to South Africa – and not all fans are happy!

British musician Robbie Williams will be returning to South Africa in early 2025 for Calabash South Africa .

However, confirmation of the news on Monday left a number of fans upset.

Organisers of the music festival confirmed at the same time that Calabash South Africa would now be taking place over two days in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

That represents a change from this year’s event which was a one-night affair in both cities.

Williams will headline what is now Night 1 in both Johannesburg (18 January 2025) and Cape Town (22 January 2025).

The remainder of the acts on Night 1 will be announced in due course.

As previously announced, rock band Green Day will headline what is now Night 2 on 19 January 2025 in Johannesburg and 23 January 2025 in Cape Town.

Additional acts for Night 2 include The Offspring and Fokofpolisiekar .

Fans who rushed out last month to buy tickets for what they assumed was to be the only night in both Johannesburg or Cape Town, will now have to purchase a second ticket if they wish to watch Robbie Williams perform live.

Ticket prices for the popular event run into thousands of rands.

Tickets for Night 1 will go on sale on Friday, 12 April on the  Ticketmaster website.

Tickets for Night 2 are already available for purchase.

Will you be buying a second ticket for Calabash South Africa?

Amstel Gold Race 2024 preview, schedule, how to watch live: Mathieu van der Poel goes for third win in three weeks

MVDP poses after winning 2024 Paris Roubaix

Mathieu van der Poel will look for a remarkable road cycling treble this weekend as he aims to regain the Amstel Gold Race crown he last won in 2019.

The Dutchman has won the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix Monument classics back-to-back, and has the chance to make it three wins in as many weeks in the first of the Ardennes classics on Sunday (14 April).

This race was one of the 29-year-old's first major breakthrough wins back in 2019, and it's no surprise he is one of the favourites.

But how can you watch the races? What is the route? What time does it begin? Find out below.

  • Mathieu van der Poel exclusive on switching between cycling disciplines: “It used to be easier”

Paris-Roubaix 2024: Mathieu van der Poel retains classic cycling title in style

Tour of flanders 2024: mathieu van der poel converts koppenberg attack into third triumph, riders to watch at men's ad women's amstel gold race 2024.

With many other big names missing through injury , and defending champion Tadej Pogacar focusing on the Giro d'Italia, perhaps Van der Poel's biggest challenges will come from INEOS Grenadiers' Tom Pidcock – incidentally also a rival of his in mountain bike and cyclo-cross – and France's Benoît Cosnefroy .

Belgium's Jasper Philipsen , who was second to Van der Poel last week in Roubaix and won Milano–Sanremo earlier this season, is also a perennial threat in the one-day races.

American Matteo Jorgenson of Team Visma - Lease A Bike has also shown he can be someone to watch, having won the semi-classic Dwars door Vlaanderen at the end of March.

On the women's side, Demi Vollering of SD Worx is the defending champion; her teammate Lotte Kopecky – Van der Poel's road race world champion counterpart – enters as the winner from last weekend's Paris–Roubaix Femmes.

Another SD Worx rider, Vollering's fellow Dutchwoman Lorena Wiebes , has five wins to her name this season and is also in good form.

Other challengers include the veteran Marianne Vos , Tour of Flanders winner Elisa Longo Borghini , and Katarzyna Niewiadoma – who was runner-up behind Longo Borghini in Flanders.

Amstel Gold Race 2024: Race routes

Both the men's and women's races begin in Maastricht and end in Berg en Terblijt. However, the women's race goes around a circuit following the first passage of the famed Cauberg climb – which is summitted four times in a 157.6km (97.9mi) race. There will be a total of 1812m (5945ft) of climbing.

Meanwhile, the men's route heads further south, reaching the German border at Aachen before doubling back north. The Cauberg is only climbed twice in the race, but there is far more ascending across the many punchy hills – the peloton will gain 3290m (10,794ft) of elevation across 253.6km (157.6mi) of racing.

Amstel Gold Race 2024: Women's and men's race schedules

The women's 2024 Amstel Gold Race begins at 10:00 local time (08:00 UTC). The first ascent of the daunting Cauberg is estimated at 12:12 local time (assuming an average speed of 37 km/h), with the final climb at 14:10 and the finish at 14:15.

Meanwhile, the men's peloton sets off at 10:45 local time (08:45). The first climb of the Cauberg comes 171.8km into the race, estimated at 14:50 local time (at an average speed of 42 km/h); it is only climbed one more time at 16:20 with 18.6km to go. The expected finish time is at 16:47.

How to watch Amstel Gold Race 2024 live

The men's and women's Amstel Gold Races will be broadcast live around the world, including on Eurosport and Discovery+ in Europe and the United Kingdom.

Fans in the United States and Canada can watch on Flobikes .

Your complete 2024 solar eclipse guide: Everything from TN start times to when the next one is

all for you tour south africa

It's almost time for a total eclipse of the sun.

Tennesseans across the state have a chance to catch a (safe) glimpse of this celestial phenomenon this afternoon. And while the state isn't in the path of totality, it will still be a pretty spectacular view.

Unless you decided to take a road trip to the path of totality like millions of other people  to see the spectacle, you might still be wondering when exactly you should be taking a peak through your eclipse glasses or if you have time to put together a pinhole projector.

To get you through the day leading up to the main event, we've gathered all of the information that you could possibly need to know... and even some that you may not have known you needed.

Take a look at our complete guide to all things eclipse in Tennessee.

What time is the eclipse on Monday?

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

In Tennessee, start time for the eclipse with vary depending on where you live in the state.

In Knoxville a nd East Tennessee the eclipse should start about 1:49 p.m. ET/12:49 p.m. CT.

In Nashville and Middle Tennessee , viewers can see the partial eclipse starting around 12:44 p.m.

In Memphis and West Tennessee , which will be the closest to totality, will start to see the eclipse around 12:37 p.m.

You can search by zip code to find the exact time for your location.

Do I need anything special to view the solar eclipse?

Looking at the sun without the right eye protection, for even a short time, can permanently damage the retinas  and even cause blindness, called solar retinopathy, according to  the American Academy of Ophthalmology .

For the eclipse, people should wear special eclipse glasses that let you view it without damaging your eyes. And if you don't have glasses available there are alternative ways to safely view the eclipse.

Here's a couple of last minute ways to view the eclipse safely:

Can I take a photo of the eclipse with my phone?

Yes, but only with a special filter to make sure your phone doesn't get fried.

Back in 2017, NASA provided  tips on how to immortalize the celestial event using a smartphone camera.  NASA said most smartphone photos you'll see won't generally look very good with the typical smartphone system, however there are steps you can take to create some out of this world photos.

NASA recommends making sure the image is properly focused, purchasing a zoom lens attachment and zooming out for a wide-angle view. You'll also need a filter to keep you phone and eyes safe.

For more tips on how to take photos safely without damaging your phone or your eyes, head here .

Radiation from the solar eclipse: Is it harmful?

Once the eclipse reaches totality, the visible corona emits electromagnetic radiation that can appear with a green hue, according to NASA.

"Scientists have studied this radiation for centuries. Being a million times fainter than the light from the sun itself, there is nothing in the coronal light that could cross 150 million kilometers of space ,penetrate our dense atmosphere and cause blindness," read NASA's eclipse misconceptions .

This radiation isn't harmful to us on Earth, but it if you look at the sun before totality could cause some damage to the retina if you aren't using proper eyewear to view it, according to NASA.

What are the major types of eclipses?

Here's a look at the main types of eclipses, according to NASA.

Total solar eclipse : When the moon passes between the sun and Earth, while fully blocking the face of the sun.

Lunar eclipse : When Earth is positioned between the moon and sun, Earth’s shadow falls upon the surface of the moon, dimming it and sometimes turning the lunar face a striking red over the course of a few hours, according to NASA.

Annular solar eclipse : When the moon passes between the sun and Earth, but when it is at or near its farthest point from Earth. Due to the fact that moon is farther away from Earth, it appears smaller than the sun and does not entirely cover the sun. As a result, the moon appears as a dark disk on top of a larger bright disk, creating what looks like a ring around the moon.

Know your eclipse terms: What is an umbra? A penumbra? Here's some terms to know ahead of the 2024 solar eclipse

When is the next solar eclipse after Monday?

After April 8, we will have to wait a bit before we see another solar eclipse in the U.S.

According to NASA, the next total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on  Aug. 23, 2044 .

When is the next lunar eclipse?

According to Space.com, the next lunar eclipse with be a partial one  on Sept. 17.

It is expected to begin around 7:41 p.m. CT with the maximum point at 9:44 p.m. The partial lunar eclipse is expected to end around 11:47 p.m. CT. This one will be visible over Europe, much of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic and Antarctica, according to  TimeandDate.com .

Organisation and communication were excellent. During the tour, our guide Gareth showed us great places along the Garden Route and every accomodation where we stayed was carefully picked, they had always a familiar feeling and we had the chance to have home cooked dinners, it was also a nice occasion to chat and spend nice time with the other guests of the tour.
