Things to Do

Jeep safari tours, where to stay nearby, how to get there, tips for your visit, gir national park.

Gir National Park is located in the state of Gujarat in west-central India. Here, 545 square miles (1,412 square kilometers) of hilly, dry scrubland serves as a wildlife sanctuary for the Asiatic lion (the only place in the world where these creatures still exist). Once almost hunted to extinction and listed as critically endangered in the year 2000, Asiatic lion numbers have recovered well due to conservation efforts that date back to 1965. According to a recent census , the total population of lions residing in Gir National Park numbers 674.

Gir's specific ecosystem makes it a preferred habitat for other animals, as well, like jackals, leopards, antelope, and deer. The seasonal rivers and four human-made reservoirs here are home to crocodiles. These watering holes attract over 300 species of resident birds, as well. Droves of visitors flock to this park each year (even though it's considered an expensive trip) to attend a bucket list safari tour that puts them face-to-face with Asiatic lions in the wild.

Most people come to Gir National Park to see the park's two most prized predators: lions and leopards. They embark on jeep safari tours, complete with guides, that take them on one of the pre-determined safari routes in the park. A three-day safari, which includes lodging, delivers maximum opportunities for wildlife viewing, as this multi-day experience is timed perfectly.

You can also access the park with a private vehicle (for a fee), but certain restrictions apply, and you still must hire a guide. Or, you can also opt for a shorter, guided minibus tour that takes you through the park's Interpretation Zone, a fenced-off compound located off-site. This option allows you to view a cross-section of the park's of wildlife, including lions, within a 20- to 30-minute drive.

Avid birders flock to Gir to discover the area's 300 species of birds, including the critically endangered white-backed and long-billed vultures. A two-day birdwatching tour , guided by local experts, can accommodate as little as two people, as well as larger groups.

Lastly, mingle with the distinctively dressed Maldhari (a tribal herder community). Only approximately 1,000 native people still live on the grounds of Gir National Park, as the large predators consume about one-quarter of their livelihood of cattle and buffalo.

Unfortunately, hiking is not permitted in Gir National Park. There are no trails within the sanctuary due to the prevalence of lion and other predator encounters.

The Asiatic lion is a sure sighting on a jeep safari tour. Encounters with the Indian leopard, jungle cat, hyena, desert cat, honey badger, and mongoose are also prolific. Trained drivers and guides will take you on one of eight driving routes in the park where you may also see blackbucks, boar, chinkara, chital, and the rare four-horned antelope.

In order to hire a jeep (gypsy), you must first buy a permit for either Gir National Park (Gir Jungle Trail) or the Gir Interpretation Zone (in the neighboring Devalia Safari Park). Permits can be obtained in advance and must be presented at the reception center in the government-owned Sinh Sadan guesthouse (the safari entry point). Arrive around 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled safari departs so that you have plenty of time to check-in and meet your guide and vehicle.

Upmarket hotels also conduct their own jeep safaris, albeit at a higher rate, and will take care of all the arrangements, including bookings and permits. This preferable option, particularly for foreigners, takes the guesswork out of the inevitable itinerary challenges that may come with a DIY adventure.

There are several lodging options both at the park's entrance and just outside the park's boundary. If you're looking to save money and don't mind staying farther away, choose from a few inexpensive hotels on the route to the Gir Interpretation Zone.

  • Sinh Sadan : Located at the entrance to the sanctuary sits Sinh Sadan, the park's most economical lodging option and the place where the local tourists stay. The guesthouse is nestled among lush gardens, and rooms offer a choice of air conditioning or not. Do note—this lodging option is a challenge to book, as reservations need to be made within one month of travel and can only be taken by phone or fax. Also, rates here are higher for foreigners.
  • The Gateway Hotel Gir Forest : This hotel offers a more luxurious stay right on the outskirts of the Gir Forest. Here, you can enjoy rooms and luxury suites—some with a view of the river or the garden—which include en-suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and a spacious balcony. An on-site spa and fitness center helps you unwind after a long day of safari-touring, and the hotel's restaurant serves regional, home-style cuisine.
  • Woods at Sasan : Mindful travelers may want to consider a stay at the eco-conscious Woods at Sasan. This lodging option is ideal for safari-goers looking for a wellness experience, as it specializes in personalized Ayurvedic treatments and yoga. The carefully curated property offers stand-alone studios and villas with up to three bedrooms, situated in an 8-acre mango orchard on the fringe of the forest.
  • Maneland Jungle Lodge : Located about two miles from the park's entrance is the popular and inexpensive Maneland Jungle Lodge, which features a grand lodge and 17 jungle cottages. Choose from deluxe rooms or a deluxe villa, all with air conditioning, and enjoy locally sourced and homegrown organic delicacies at the hotel's restaurant.

Gir National Park is situated in the southwest part of Gujarat state, 360 kilometers from Ahmedabad, 65 kilometers from Junagadh, and 40 kilometers from Veraval. The entrance to the park is located at Sasan Gir Village and includes the park's reception and orientation center. The Gir Interpretation Zone is about 7 miles (12 kilometers) west of the village, at Devalia. And, the nearest major airport is in Ahmedabad, about seven hours away, with smaller airports in both Rajkot (three hours away) and Dui (two hours away).

The nearest train station in Junagadh offers the easiest way to access the park. Trains run directly from both from Ahmedabad and Rajkot, and then it's an hour-and-a-half drive to Sasan Gir. You can hire a taxi from the train station, or public buses run regularly to Sasan Gir.

Alternatively, you can book a private bus from Ahmedabad to Sasan Gir and have it drop you right next to the Sinh Sadan guesthouse and reception center. It's more convenient than the train, but the journey takes seven hours.

  • The most popular time to visit Gir National Park is December through March. However, it can get very crowded during these peak times, rendering long waits. Alternatively, come during the hot and dry season (from March through May), as animals are easily spotted during this time when they congregate near the water's edge.
  • Embark on a morning safari when the lions are the most active. Lions tend to sleep throughout the day and are harder to spot on a mid-day tour.
  • Gir National Park is open from mid-October until mid-June, with jeep tours starting at 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m., and 3 p.m. The Gir Interpretation Zone is open year-round, Thursday to Tuesday (closed Wednesday), 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., and 3 p.m. until dusk (around 5 p.m.).
  • Safari bookings can be made through the park up to three months in advance, and within 48 hours before a scheduled tour. Only 30 vehicles are allowed in the national park at a time, so permits for the Gir Jungle Trail are limited and can only be booked online.
  • The eight safari routes are randomly assigned by a computer (along with a driver and guide) when you present your permit. Vehicles must all move in one direction along the route, without reversing or diverting.
  • E-permits to Gir National Park are issued per vehicle, with up to six occupants. The cost varies, depending on the day of the week, with weekends and public holidays being the most expensive.
  • If you're planning a DIY experience, prepare to pay for a guide to accompany you inside the park, a jeep, and DSLR camera charge. (The camera fee for foreigners is unreasonably high. As a result, many find the experience to be disappointing and not worth the money.)

Gir National Park - A Complete Travel Guide

  • January 15, 2021
  • Updated on March 19, 2023

Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India’s oldest and most visited wildlife sanctuaries, is the last remaining abode of Asiatic lions. The national park, also known as Sasan Gir, is about 37 miles southeast of Junagadh, a district in Gujarat. The Sasan Gir village serves as the official entrance to the sprawling Gir forest. The park has a total area of 1412 square kilometers, of which 258 square kilometers are the core of the national park and the remaining 1153 square kilometers are the wildlife sanctuary.

Indiscriminate hunting expeditions by Indian rulers and British colonists resulted in a drastic decrease in the population of Asiatic lions in the nineteenth century. At the start of the 20th century, only a dozen lions were left in the Gir forest. Junagadh’s rulers, aided by Britishers, then took the initiative to protect the endangered species. In 1969, the Indian government came forward to safeguard the endangered species and declared the area a sanctuary. Subsequently, in 1980, it was recognized as a national park.

How to reach Gir National Park?

By Air – There is no direct flight to Gir. The nearest airport is in Diu, which is 92 kilometers (2 hours drive) from the reserve region. Rajkot, the next closest airport, is approximately 160 kilometers (3.5 hours’ drive) from Gir. Rajkot has direct flights from both Delhi and Mumbai. Diu is not well-connected.

By Rail – Regular trains run from Ahmedabad and Rajkot to Junagadh (65 kilometers from Gir) and Veraval (45 km from Gir). After arriving in Junagadh/Veraval, take a taxi or bus to Sasan Gir. Trains (meter-gauge line) run daily from Junagadh and Veraval to Sasan Gir station, but their timetables may conflict with your jungle safari schedule.

By Road – As previously stated, Gir National Park is 60 kilometers from Junagadh and 360 kilometers from Ahmedabad. From most locations in Gujarat, you can take a bus or a taxi to get to the Sasan Gir region. There are several private and government-owned vehicles that can drop you at the closest access point to the sanctuary. Use Google Maps to find the exact location of Sinh Sadan’s entrance.

What is the best time to visit Gir National Park?

It can get very hot in April and May, but this is the best time for sighting the Asiatic lions. Artificial bodies of water are created throughout the forests to provide animals with easy access to drinking water. This makes it easier for visitors to spot the elusive mammals, but the heat (which can reach 45°) can be oppressive. It is best to visit Gir National Park between November and March when the weather is cool and pleasant. It gets very cold at night in late December and early January . Due to the monsoon season, the park is closed from mid-June to mid-October every year.

Wildlife in Gir National Park?

The Asiatic lion is the main draw of the Gir National Park as it’s the only place in the world where they can be found. In addition to these beautiful creatures, visitors to the Sasan Gir can see 2375 different types of fauna. The most spectacular and popular species include Indian leopards (over 300), striped hyenas, crocodiles, cobras, reindeer, sambar, jackal, fox, vultures, Indian Mongoose, wild boar, porcupines, Monitor lizards, jungle cats, eagle, owl, and many more rare species. Overall, wildlife enthusiasts will have a memorable experience in the densely forested hills, plateaus, and valleys of the Gir Forest

How to plan for Jungle Safari in Gir National Park?

To visit the forest, you must book your Jungle safari well in advance. Permits are only available online and can be reserved at girlion.gujarat.gov.in. To book a safari, you must have your identification details. If you are an Indian citizen, the permit will cost you between Rs.800 and Rs.1000 for up to 6 people. For foreigners, the entry fee for a group of six is between Rs.5600 and Rs.7000. Aside from that, guide and open SUVs are available on the spot for a fee ranging from Rs.2100-Rs.2400. Once you have obtained a permit, you must arrive at the starting point half an hour before the safari for verification. They will check the ID of the member who made the online reservation and issue you the safari permits. Private vehicles are not permitted in the jungle, and each jeep can carry a maximum of six people. In short, a Gir Jungle Trail would be expensive.

The jungle has 13 routes that intersect at various points. The forest authority assigns you a route and requires you to stick to it. The earlier you go, the more likely it is that you will get a better route. Approximate timings of Jeep Safari – The forest is open from Monday to Sunday. The duration of the safari is three hours. There may be slight variations in safari timings depending on the season. Winter Morning :  6:30 am to 9:30 am & 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Winter Evening:   3 pm to 6 pm Summer Morning :  6 am to 9 am & 9 am to 12 am Summer Evening:   4 pm to 7 pm

What are the chances of spotting the Asiatic lion in Gir National Park?

According to local guides, you will spot a lion 80% of the time. However, the type of sighting will vary depending on the route, time of day, and season. Early morning safaris are best because lions are most active at that time. They are usually sleeping in the bushes during the day and can only be seen from a distance. The second option should be an evening safari, and the last option should be an 8:30 a.m. safari. If you visit the park between March and May, you have a good chance of seeing the lion. The giant beasts are out looking for water, and this is your chance to spot them. During the summer, there is a good chance of glimpsing lions with cubs.

Lions are frequently tracked with the assistance of a rescue team. They would find out the lions’ exact location and spread the word. You would soon see the jeeps clustering near the lion’s whereabouts. Unlike African lions , Asiatic lions do not live in large groups, so you are more likely to see 1-2 lions together rather than a pride as seen in African jungles.

If you are unable to obtain a permit or see a lion during a jungle safari, you have another option. Visit Devalia Safari Park, a fenced-in area of the sanctuary where rescued animals are housed. The sightings are guaranteed, but the atmosphere is more akin to a zoo. There is no need to book ahead of time, and you are taken around on a bus.

Tourist Attractions in Sasan Gir?

In case you are staying in Sasan Gir for a couple of days and have some time between safaris, you can visit the local attractions like Kamleshwar Dam, Crocodile Breeding Farm, Tulsi Shyam Temple, and Zamzir Waterfall

Nearby Attractions?

If you have come this far and can afford to linger, it makes sense to visit nearby attractions.

  • Somnath – It is believed to be the first of the 12 jyotirlingas of Shiva. It is a very important pilgrimage and tourist destination in India. Bhalka Tirth, Triveni Tirth, Prabhas Patar Museum, and Somnath Mahadev Temple are worth visiting in Somnath. Somnath is around 70kms away from Sasan Gir
  • Girnar – Situated 60 km from Sasan Gir, Girnar is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimages for the Jain community. Not only did Jain Tirthankara Neminath attain Nirvana at Girnar, but Hindu Lord Dattatreya also performed penance on the top of the hill. Due to its religious significance, several Jain and Hindu temples are built on the ridges and summit of the 3660-foot-long hill. Previously, you had to climb 9,999 steps to reach the final summit, but now a ropeway has been started which drops you at Ma Ambaji temple which is located midway at 5000 steps.
  • Diu Island – A popular beach destination, Diu is located 95 km from Gir. The island is popular for Diu fort, Naida Caves, St. Paul’s Church, Diu Museums, Panikota Fort, and multiple beaches.

Accommodation at Sasan Gir?

If you are looking for a luxury stay, you have three options. Woods at Sasan, The Gateway Hotel Gir Forest by Taj, and The Fern Gir Forest Resort. Woods at Sasan is the most expensive but has rave reviews. It is a contemporary new hotel with manicured gardens and many activities to entertain you. Taj hotel has the advantage of being located on the edge of the Gir forest and comes with the famed Taj hospitality . Looking for budget accommodations? Check out Asiatic Lion Lodge, Gir Pride Resort, Hiran Holidays, and Carina Retreat.

Few Useful Tips for Gir National Park:

  • If you’re going to the park in the winter, bring plenty of warm clothes. You will need gloves, caps, scarves, and jackets for the early morning safari. Gir National Park : The Majestic Home Of The Royal King :

Besides Africa, Gir National Park in Gujarat is the only place in the world where you can spot lions roaming free in the wild. The real discovery channel of India is situated approximately 65 Kms South East of Junagarh District. The Government notified the large geographical extent of Sasan Gir as wildlife sanctuary on 18th September, 1965 in order to conserve the Asiatic Lion. It covers total area of 1412 square kilometers of which 258 Km forms the core area of the National Park. Indiscriminate hunting by the people of Junagarh led to their decrease in population drastically, while they were completely wiped out from the other parts of Asia. It was the kind effort of Nawabs of Junagarh who protected the queen royalty in his own private hunting grounds. Later in due course of time Department of Forest Officials came forward to protect the world’s most threatened species. From a population of approximately 20 lions in 1913, they have risen to a comfortable 523 according to 2015 census. There are 106 male, 201 female and 213 sub-adult lions in the wilderness of these four districts.

Nearby places or cities

It is interesting to know that very few places in Gujarat have the diversity that Junagadh offers. Situated at the foothills of the Girnar range, Junagadh got its name because of Uparkot, a fort built by ChandraGupta Maurya during the 320 BC. “Old Fort” as the word Junagadh means, the fort is the main centre of the city.

Tourist Places In and Around Junagadh

Navghan Kuvo and Adi-kadi Vav are a pair of ancient step wells that were not built, but cut out of solid rock, delved 170 feet into the heart of solid rock to find water at the bottom. The Gir National Park famous for the last Asiatic Lions is the most popular reserve forest of the entire Gujarat.

History of Junagarh

Junagadh is quite ancient, as it existed during the reigns of Chandra Gupta Maurya and King Ashoka. Inscriptions dating back to the era of the Saka ruler - Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I - can also be found. During Mohammad Bahadur Khanji I, the present city of Junagadh was founded.

Girnar is one of the most important and holy pilgrimage centres of both Hindus and Jains. Girnar is a range of mountains usually known as the Girnar Hills. Girnar has been mentioned in the Vedas and also in the scriptures from the Indus Valley Civilization proving that it has always been respected as a sacred place.

The Hindu and Jain Temples

There are five peaks in the Girnar range that have a collection of many Hindu and Jain Temples. Pilgrims need to climb thousands and thousands of steps in order to reach these temples. Amongst the Jain Temples are the Tirthankara Neminath temple, Mallinath Temple, Rishabhdev Temple and the Parshwanath Temple. The Hindu temples are the Bhavnath Mahadev Temple, the Dattatreya Temple, the Amba Mata Temple, the Kalika Temple, the Ramchandra Temple, the Jatashankar Mahadev Temple, and the Gaumukhi Ganga Temple and there is also a stream called the Hanuman Dhara on the Western side of the Girnar hills.

In 1540 A.D. Jam Raval founded the city of Jamnagar as the capital of the Princely State of Nawanagar. The city was established around the Ranmal Lake and at the confluence of the rivers Rangmati and Nagmati. The city was later refurbished by Maharaja Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji in the 1920s and later came to be known as Jamnagar or “the city of Jams”. The word 'Jam' means 'king' and this area was ruled by the Jadeja Rajput rulers, who were thought to be the descendants of Krishna’s Yadava clan. Lord Krishna had relocated the Yadavas from Mathura to establish his kingdom in Dwarka which falls under the Jamnagar district.

The Foundation stone of Jamnagar

Jam Lakaji, father of Jam Rawal was awarded twelve villages by Bahadur Shah. Later, Jam Rawal moved to Kathiawar and founded the city of Nawanagar (the new town). Under the rule of Jam Vibhaji in 1852, the city progressed due to the establishment of schools, hospitals, and the railway line to Rajkot.

Gir Forest National Park

Quick navigation.

Gir National Park is located near the coast of the far west-central part of India in the state of Gujarat.  The national park area covers an area of 545 square miles (1,412 sq km).  It is sometimes referred to as Sasan Gir.

The national park serves as a wildlife sanctuary focused on protecting the Asiatic lion population which has been increasing in recent years.  The park is comprised of a dry deciduous forest with teak mixed in throughout.  Collectively, the park is a hilly landscape of dry scrubland.

There are seven perennial rivers flowing through the park with four dams that have created four reservoirs.  These water sources are some of the best places to catch the views of wildlife.  The seven rivers are Datardi, Godavari, Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, Shetrunji, and Shingoda.  Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, and Shingoda are the four rivers that have dams.

Although there are only 38 species of mammals, the collective wildlife accounts for over 2,300 species.  Insects account for the majority with 300 species of birds and 37 species of reptiles.  The Asiatic lion, Indian leopard, jungle cat, hyena, Desert cat, honey badger, and mongoose make up the predators of the park.

Other popular wildlife encounters include blackbucks, boar, chinkara, chital, four-horned antelope, nilgal, porcupine, rabbits, and sambar.  Some of the popular reptiles include crocodile, Indian cobra, monitor lizard, and the tortoise.

There are over 500 species of vegetation creating the forest habitat.  Teak and banyan trees are integrated throughout the abundant deciduous species.  The varied forest vegetation makes a great home for the 300 species of birds as well as providing protection for many of the mammalian species.

Gir National Park

Lions are the highlight of a safari tour through Gir National Park; however, they are not the only exciting wildlife that visitors may encounter.  The Indian Leopard would be a highlight for most.

Gir Forest National Park Trails

Gir National Park is a wildlife sanctuary and hiking is not permitted.  There are no trails within the park because of the prevalence of lions and other predator species.

Gir Forest Highlights

Gir is affectionately known as the “royal kingdom of Asiatic lions.”  The lions are the primary appeal of the national park.

Sasan Gir National Park General Information

Sasan Gir National Park General Information

Gir National Park one of the most distinguished wildlife sanctuaries of the country stretching across an area of nearly 1412sqkms. The park was set up in the year 1965 on the 18th of September. The park makes the greatest conservation ground for the famed Asiatic Lions which roamed around freely nearly 2 centuries back in the wildernesses of Middle East and of some of the parts of the Indian subcontinent but is now an endangered species. Sasan is the sanctuary’s headquarters and comes with a rest house belonging to the Gir Forest. The forests of Gir are a dense deciduous forest offering a perfect natural habitat for a vast range of wild beasts. The topography of Gir also consists of grasslands, patches of evergreen trees, acacia shrubs, and marsh lands. The region is fed by several seasonal as well as perennial rivers plus streams which again contributes to enriching the fauna & flora of Gir. The Asiatic Lions of Gir are a little smaller in size when compared to their African cousins. But despite this fact the chance to visualize a large, masculine lion of Gir is indeed a one of a kind experience. The best way one could catch a glimpse of these royal, magnificent creatures is through a guided jungle safari tour during the dusk or dawn. Spotting the ‘King of the jungle’ or other animals of the ‘big cat’ family from close range during the safari tour will indeed send a shiver down your spine. A drive across the sprawling forest ground is the best way to enjoy Gir’s spectacular wildlife. The best drive routes from Sasan are Sasan-Kankai, Sasan-Baval Chowk, Sasan-Chodavdi, Sasan-Kamleshwar dam, Sasan-Tulsishyam. Lion shows organized by the forest department each Sunday will let you visualize the prowling and proud lions out on hunt.

Since the year 1884 the park has been the only natural habitat for the endangered Asiatic Lions. During the British era, British officers took pride in hunting and mercilessly hunted lions with the help of the local and obliging Nawabs and Maharajas. The prowess and pride of Maharaja during that time was fathomed in terms of the total number of lions and tigers he had been able to hunt successfully in his lifetime. During the great famine of 1899, the region’s Lion population dropped significantly and Lord Curzon by taking note of this fact dropped his plan for going on a ‘Shikaar’ or hunting expedition at Gir. Furthermore he advised the local Nawabs and Maharajas to safeguard the left over meager number of lions. At the time of the country’s independence there had been some increase in the total lion count in the area but then again the Maharajas started off with their hunting expeditions. It was around mid 1960 that India government intervened into this matter and banned the lion hunting and later only photo safaris were allowed in the park and continues till date. Today Gir National Park has become one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Gujarat. In the recent times, Gir is home to nearly 300 lions.

The Gir National Park is an expansive forested belt with its topography consisting in evergreen and semi-evergreen flora, scrub jungle, Acacia grasslands, rocky hills, isolated hills, valleys, plateaus, marshlands. The eastern part of the park is cloaked mainly by dry, semi-arid deciduous trees while the rest of the park consists in stunted woods interspersed by lush, hilly grasslands divided by rocky, steeped ravines. The northern side of the park is predominated by scrub land. Rivers such as Shingada, Godavari, Datardi, Raval, Shetrunji, Hiran, Machhundri are some of the major rivers that flow across Gir. Water bodies within Gir such as Kamleshwar dam site make the most ideal haven for birds, reptiles and marsh crocodiles. The latitudinal extent of Gir is 20° 40′ to 21° 50′ North while the longitudinal extent is 70° 50′ to 71° 15′ East. The average elevation of the place ranges between 150meters-530meters above the sea level. Winter season at Gir starts in October and ends in March; summers start in April and end in June while Monsoons start in July and end in September. The maximum temperature of the region is about 45 degree centigrade while minimum temperature is about 5 degree centigrade. The average annual rainfall at Gir ranges between 600mm to 1000mm.

Gir National Park is located in the western Indian state of Gujarat and comes within Gujarat’s Junagadh district, nearly 65kms towards the Southeast of the district. The sanctuary is located in vicinity to Talala Gir. The park is about 390kms away from Ahmedabad International Airport. From Rajkot Gir is 164kms away and one can easily take a drive down to Gir from Rajkot station. Thus the location of Gir facilitates easy accessibility.

Ecological Importance

Gir National Park comes enriched with an extensive biodiversity that supports an extremely stable ecosystem characterized by remarkable self-sustaining, regenerating and self-supporting capacity. The biodiversity of Gir encompasses a whopping 300 bird species, 37 reptile species, 39 mammal species, over 2000 insect species, 606 plant species and so on. The forest is an important breeding ground for the migratory birds, supports a huge population of the typical marshland crocodiles & other reptiles, comes with the densest leopard concentration. The vast, unending stretches of forest covers in the region keeps the levels of salinity quite low in the region and also keeps the climate quite moderate. Gir region is integral part of Gujarat facilitating and supporting myriad kinds of ecological activities in the region. The Gir region makes a very fertile catchment zone of some of the most vital life giving rivers of Gujarat such as Shetrunji, Shingoda, Datardi, Hiran, Raval, Saraswati and Machhundri. Thus the area of the forest aids in recharging of water table through percolation and infiltration along with moisture and soil conservation. Thus the forest comes as a true gift of nature for agriculturists and farmers residing in the peripheral belts of the Gir environ by supporting them in sustained agricultural as well as horticultural activities.

Eco Tourism

Tourism at the Gir National Park had begun at the time of the country’s independence but the last decade witnessed a significant development in the genre of eco tourism at Gir. Eco tourism is allowed in a regulated manner in some of the identified and best eco tourism zones in and around Gir. The key goals for promoting eco tourism in the region are as follows-

  • To mitigate the negative impact tourists can leave on wildlife and PA
  • To offer the local people with economic benefits
  • To make the stay at Gir enjoyable for people
  • To heighten visitor’s concern and awareness for biodiversity and nature

Conservation

At Gir National Park, a significant attempt has been made to conserve the famed Asiatic lions whose population has shown a rapid drop around the beginning of 20th. Gir’s conservation history takes us down the ages to early 1900’s when the tradition of trophy hunting brought down the lion count to a meager 15. After the ban on lion slaughter imposed by the India government Gir turned out to be the country’s most famous conservation ground for the rare and endangered Asiatic lions. Apart from conservation of Asiatic Lions the forest also conserves a huge wealth of other elusive and rare exotic fauna and flora. However, this is one park that has the highest concentration of carnivores as well as marsh crocodiles in the whole of the country and that sets Gir apart from all.
