Third Day is a Christian Rock band that hails from Marietta, Georgia. They formed in the early 1990s. The band’s name is a reference to the biblical accounts of Jesus’ rising from the dead on the third day following his crucifixion.

It was 1992, that Mac Powell and Mark Lee were playing at Lee’s church, fortunately the same night that David Carr and Tai Anderson played with a band called Bullard Family Singers. After being introduced, realising their mutual interests, the four musicians formed a band. In 1993, whilst still in school, the band started playing more frequently around Atlanta and saved $3000 to record a full-length studio album which would be called “Contagious”. 1000 CDs and cassette copies of the recording were released. While playing in Marietta, Georgia at the Strand Theatre, the owners offered the band a contract to sign with a new independent record label called Gray Dot Records. With a recording contract to their names, the band release the album entitled “Third Day” which sold 20,000 units. Reunion Records bought out their Grey Dot contract and signed the band to a multi-album deal.

In 1998, the band began to work on their next album called “Time” which was produced by Monroe Jones. This album went on to be nominated for a Grammy Award and won a Dove Award. Having entered the studio with so many songs, they decided to make an EP called “Southern Tracks”, with some of the songs that didn’t make the cut. In the band’s live show, they had a worship section.

They embarked on a tour with Jennifer Knapp, and that same year they collaborated on a project “City on a Hill: Songs of Worship and Praise” along with FFH, Caedmon’s Call, Newsboy and Jars of Clay. Everything got bigger than they’d hoped, especially when they played in Australia and New Zealand in 2001. They held a concert at the Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre with an attendance of close to 15,000 people. That same year, the band won five Dove Awards as well as a Grammy. It was their following album that same year that the band released their 5th studio album “Come Together”, released on November 6th 2001, which won two Dove Awards and one more Grammy.

Their album “Wherever You Are” debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 8 and also earned the band their third Grammy award. They were also inducted into the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame on September 19th 2009. Their following studio album “Miracle” was released on November 6th 2012. It charted at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart, following the release, they embarked on a tour that started on February 21st 2013, in Fairfax Virginia, and ended on May 19th 2014 in Orlando, Florida.

Live reviews

Third Day is a Christian rock band out of Georgia. They were formed in the nineties. I got to see them at the Offerings Experience. They played hard rocking music that was at the same time intensely spiritual. Their amazing rock music served the Lord and praised God in every way. It wasn't about being famous rock stars but about showing praise to Jesus. They were great performers, raising their hands to God and showing praise in all their songs.

They got the audience involved asking them to get on their feet and clap, and the audience obliged. The whole crowd loved being up on their feet and clapping for God and Third Day. Everyone was spiritually connected and could feel the spirit flowing over them. It was rock music with purpose and drive for God.

The young people all learned to love Jesus and praise him with music that night. It was a great show with great musicians and God-fearing music lovers. Every second of the show was filled with love and the spirit. I would highly recommend everyone get to see Third Day live and in concert as they will definitely feel the spirit wash over them in the words and music they perform.

This was the best concert I have ever been to. It was perfect! Warren Barfield opened and did an amazing job! He exhibited great faith in God, love for his family and his love for the gift of music, with just him and his guitar. Third Day did such a great job too. Mac took requests from the audience. He sang from deep in his sole. He was a gentleman to the other members, gave them their well deserved spotlights as well. The music was fabulous! the taste of the new album, (new song) was exciting and awesome of course! The night was perfect. Thank you Third Day for adding a new outlook to my life. Blessed be all!!

That was the most powerful Concert ever. I enjoyed every minute of it. Been a long time since I was ever at a Concert like that. I wish I could see more. This is the first Concert I got a VIP to. That was very memorable and I will never forget it. If my Friend didn't pay for me to go I don't think I would of gone. I need to find more CDs of yours. T-shirts and sweatshirts would be nice to find also. I got a t-shirt from the concert that you guys signed and will wear that proudly. Thank you guys soooo much for coming to Bend Oregon. Love you all very much!!!

Please come back to Bend.

I have been to a lot of Rock and Roll Shows...Judas Priest, Aerosmith,Rolling Stones, The Who, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent, Rush, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ozzy Osbourne, B.B. King, all excellent shows. but rarely have i seen an act like Third Day. Not only was it Rock and Roll, they have a stage presence, lights and backdrops, guest performers, and the voice of Mac Powell and the music these gentleman play is uplifting. and when you leave their show you are filled with a sense of well being and above all else LOVE!

I have seen Third Day in concert numerous times. This band was key to my returning to church and the grace of God. I listened to their songs ALL OF THE TIME. After loosing both of my parents, back to back Their music truly helped me through the most challenging times in my life and for that I will always cherish their music. I do wish they would tour the west coast more often...haven't seen them live in over a year and I need me a Third Day fix.

Great show! These guys are so talented. Rich voices. True entertainers. Really glad I was able to see this Farewell show. Sponsored a child this time. Feel like God said it’s time to reach out and care for someone special. Wish the best for these guys.

I haven't been a big Third Day fan, but I must say they are very tight musically. Mac Powell has a strong, unique voice that commands your attention. I hadn't realized that several of the songs they sang were "their" songs. Great overall experience.

They were absolutely amazing!! I have to say that I really did not appreciate their music before seeing them live. But after seeing them, I will not ever miss a show when they come to town!!

Third Day

Veteran rockers Third Day are calling it quits after 25 years, Billboard has learned exclusively. The Grammy winning band heads out in May for a 12-date run produced by Awakening Events and sponsored by Food for the Hungry. The tour kicks off May 31 in Seattle and concludes June 27 at Red Rocks Amphitheater outside Denver. When it wraps, lead vocalist Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and drummer David Carr will pursue different creative ventures.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while now,” Powell tells Billboard. “I’ve had things I’ve wanted to do and Mark is really enjoying writing and David is loving photography now. So our season was coming to a close. It’s bittersweet. I’m sad that it’s coming to a close, but I’m excited about starting the next season of my life.”

Powell and Lee co-founded Third Day while they were still Georgia high school students (later adding guitarist Brad Avery, bassist Tai Anderson and Carr). The band began building a following around Atlanta and releasing independent projects in the early ’90s before inking a deal with Reunion Records. Since then the band has won four Grammys, 24 Gospel Music Assn. Dove Awards and numerous other accolades while populating Christian radio with such hits as “Consuming Fire,” “God of Wonders,” “Show Me Your Glory,” “Come Together,” “I Believe,” “King of Glory,” “Cry Out to Jesus,” “Call my Name,” “I Need a Miracle” and “Soul on Fire.” The band’s final album, 2017’s Revival , was recorded in Muscle Shoals.

Third day talks returning to southern rock roots on 'revival,' shares behind-the-scenes video.

“It’s great that we get a chance to close the chapter in our own timing and in our own way. Nobody is mad at each other,” he says. “We’re still friends and still buds. We’re riding off into the sunset in a good way.”

In addition to performing their hits, the final tour will also feature Lee sharing new music and stories from his critically acclaimed autobiography, Hurt Road, which released last year. Worship leader Matt Maher will be a special guest on the tour, and other guests will be featured in different markets.

“We wanted to go out and do enough cities that would reach around the U.S. to where if someone wanted to get to us, they could,” Powell says of the routing for the farewell tour, which will include stops at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, L.A.’s Citizens Business Bank Arena, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids, MI and the Beacon Theater in New York. Special pre-sale VIP fan experience packages will be available starting March 7. General tickets will be available on March 9.

Following Third Day’s retirement, Powell will continue making music with his band Mac Powell and the Family Reunion. In recent years, the gritty-voiced rocker has pursued a side career in country music, releasing two independent albums and touring solo as well as doing shows with country traditionalist Craig Morgan. “I’ve got a bunch of great people with me,” says Powell, who plans to drop two new albums later this year, including a Christmas record. “[Multi-instrumentalist] Jason Hoard is still playing with me, and we’re just out there making music that we love. If we love it, hopefully other people will love it too. It’s a little bit of everything — a little rock, a bit of gospel and a little bit of country all mixed together. It’s a lot of fun and it’s given me a chance as a writer to explore new and different territory I haven’t had a chance to do with Third Day.”

A busy three-week stretch in professional golf comes to an end this week in connecticut.

travelers-championship-signage-g.jpg

The 2024 Travelers Championship appears to be heading to an exciting finish. Taking to TPC River Highlands once again, Sunday's final round has moved into a playoff as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim battle for the trophy and a massive prize money payout .

Failing to card a single under-par round in a tournament for the first time in his professional career, Scheffler looks to get back on the wagon and capture his sixth victory of the season. A win at TPC River Highlands would be his first at a course which saw Xander Schauffele reign supreme in 2022.

The world No. 2 continues to display his consistency on a weekly basis and has now notched four straight top 10s dating back to the Wells Fargo Championship. With plenty of form in tow, Schaffuele seeks his second win of the season and second trophy at the Travelers Championship.

The First Look: ISCO Championship

The First Look

Change Text Size

This week’s ISCO Championship, co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour for the third time, is being contested in Kentucky for the sixth straight year.

With an eclectic mix of up-and-coming stars competing against PGA TOUR winners and Ryder Cup champions – and crucial FedExCup points on offer – it’s set to be another exciting week in the Bluegrass State.

Here’s everything else you need to know.

FIELD NOTES: PGA TOUR University’s reigning No. 1 Michael Thorbjornsen is back in action on TOUR after finishing T2 at the John Deere Classic Sunday – in just his third professional start … Roughly 50 DP World Tour pros will compete in Kentucky, as this is once again a co-sanctioned event … Fan favorites and TOUR winners Joel Dahmen and Kevin Kisner are in action… Other notable TOUR winners in the field include Daniel Berger, J.J. Spaun, Ryan Brehm and Camilo Villegas … C.T. Pan is set to tee it up after earning a spot at The Open via his finish at the John Deere Classic and an Official World Golf Ranking tiebreaker. Pan, who finished T2 at TPC Deere Run, stood well ahead of his fellow second-place finishers (Thorbjornsen and amateur Luke Clanton) on the world ranking.

SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS: Luke Clanton is back in action on the PGA TOUR after a tremendous back-to-back stretch. Clanton followed a T10 finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with a runner-up at last week’s John Deere Classic, becoming the first amateur to record back-to-back top-10s on TOUR since 1958. Clanton is a rising junior at Florida State University and now holds nine PGA TOUR University Accelerated points – chasing the 20 cumulative points needed to collect automatic PGA TOUR membership following the next academic year. Given his recent play, the amateur is the betting favorite this week … Kentucky native John Marshall Butler , an Auburn alum, will make his PGA TOUR debut. Butler, who had a celebrated amateur career, finished T5 at PGA TOUR Americas’ The Beachlands Victoria Open presented by Times Colonist to start his professional career last month. Butler was part of Auburn’s 2024 NCAA Championship-winning squad (with Jackson Koivun), a team that captured 10 collegiate wins… University of Kentucky alum Alex Goff will make his PGA TOUR debut. The 2020 Kentucky Amateur champion made the All-SEC Second Team for 2023-24 and was the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year thanks to leading the team with a 70.55 scoring average – the program’s best in 30 years … Another University of Kentucky alum (and Louisville native), Cooper Musselman is back in action on TOUR. He finished 119th on last year’s Korn Ferry Tour Points List and will be teeing it up at the ISCO Championship for the third time … Stephen Stallings Jr. returns to his home-state TOUR event. Stallings, who had a tremendous career as a high school golfer and was named captain of the University of Kentucky golf team while there, has played 12 TOUR events. He’s teed it up twice on the Korn Ferry Tour this season … Neal Shipley tees it up for the fifth time on TOUR this season, and for the third time after finishing as low amateur at both the Masters and the U.S. Open. Shipley finished T20 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic but missed the cut at the John Deere Classic … Major champion Jason Dufner and TOUR winner Adam Long round out the sponsor exemptions.

COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: After last week’s John Deere Classic, each of the players in the TOUR TOP 10 retained their exact spots … Last season’s Genesis Scottish Open winner, Rory McIlroy, stands No. 3, a substantial 3,323 points behind Scottie Scheffler’s leading total. Xander Schauffele remains at No. 2 … Byeong Hun An continues to be the only player inside the TOUR TOP 10 each week so far in 2024.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 300 FedExCup points

COURSE: Keene Trace Golf Club (Champions), 7,328 yards, par 72. This is the sixth year the 1987 Arthur Hills layout will host the PGA TOUR. Keene Trace is one of the top-ranked courses in Kentucky, located just south of Lexington, and is laid out through the rolling hills of the state. Big greens and plenty of bunkers are the signature features of Keene Trace, while the par-4 closer is a dramatic 18th built around the edge of a lake.

72-HOLE RECORD: 262, Jim Herman (2019)

18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Kelly Kraft (Round 3, 2019)

LAST TIME: Rookie Vincent Norrman defeated Nathan Kimsey on the first hole of a playoff to win his first PGA TOUR title. Norrman blew his drive left in regulation on the 72nd hole and needed to scramble just to save bogey – which he did from 7 feet – to get into the playoff with Kimsey, who had posted Sunday’s low round. Kimsey missed a 15-footer for par that would have sent the playoff to a second extra hole. Trevor Cone led by one heading into the final round and was firmly in the mix late Sunday until a double bogey on No. 16 derailed his chances at Keene Trace. He finished tied for third alongside Adrien Saddier, while Lucas Glover finished fifth, his third straight top-10 result.

France election highlights: Leftists win most seats, but no party wins majority

A coalition of the French left that quickly banded together to beat a surging far right in legislative elections won the most seats in parliament but not a majority, according to polling projections Sunday.

Today’s live coverage has ended but there’s still plenty to catch up on. See what you missed below and find more coverage of the 2024 France elections on apnews.com.

A leftist coalition, the New Popular Front , has won the most seats in the 2024 French legislative election , beating back a far-right surge but failing to win a majority. The outcome leaves France facing the stunning prospect of a hung parliament and threatens political paralysis in a pillar of the European Union and Olympic host country.

Here’s what to know:

  • Final results: The leftist coalition has taken the most seats in parliament. Emmanuel Macron’s centrists came in second and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally is third.
  • Prime minister offers to resign: Gabriel Attal plans to present his resignation on Monday but said if needed he could stay on through the Paris Olympics or longer.
  • What happens next?: With Macron saying he’ll “wait” to make decisions on a new government, France now faces the prospect of weeks of political machinations to determine who will be prime minister and lead the National Assembly.

Mélenchon has long been a figure on the left, first in the Socialist Party and as a senator. He founded the hard-left France Unbowed party in 2016 but failed to reach the presidential runoff in 2017 and 2022. He then allied his party with the Socialists, Communists and greens to form the New Popular Ecological and Social Union.

Mélenchon is a divisive figure who angers many moderates. The alliance fell into disarray because of divisions over the Hamas-Israel war. The France Unbowed party condemned the conduct of Israel’s war against Hamas and accused it of pursuing genocide against Palestinians. Party leaders denied antisemitism.

Then last month, Mélenchon’s party joined a similar alliance that was quickly thrown together for snap elections in response to the prospect of the far right gaining power. The alliance had more luck this time, winning the largest number of seats.

Here’s a look at the final results from the second round. According to the Interior Ministry, the leftist coalition has taken the most seats in parliament, with at least 181. Macron’s centrists have more than 160 seats. Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally have 143 seats after leading in the first round.

No majority for anyone. The unpopular Macron will have to form alliances to run the government.

Many voters decided that keeping the far right from power was more important than anything else.

Correction: This post has been updated to remove exact seat tallies reported by French media to account for the fact that official results don’t give precise totals for each main bloc.

“Our country is facing an unprecedented political situation and is preparing to welcome the world in a few weeks.” That’s from Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who plans to offer his resignation on Monday.

The weakened Macron could seek a deal with the moderate left to create a joint government, but France has no tradition of this kind of arrangement. A deal could take the form of a loose, informal alliance that likely would be fragile. And already, leaders of the leftist New Popular Front are pushing Macron to give their alliance the first chance to form a government and propose a prime minister to share power with him.

If he can’t make a deal, Macron could name a government of experts unaffiliated with political parties to handle the day-to-day work of keeping one of Europe’s largest countries running. But that would require parliamentary approval. And the first session with new members of the 577-seat National Assembly is July 18.

Meanwhile, no clear figure has emerged as a possible prime minister. Macron’s office has said he would wait for the new National Assembly to take shape before taking “the necessary decisions.”

Midnight has passed in mainland France. Welcome to a new day. We await the final election results.

Speaking of suspense, a glance at the Paris Olympics countdown clock shows less than 19 days until the opening.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen says France will be “totally deadlocked” with three groups of similar size in the National Assembly and none with a majority. But she says her National Rally party will be in a position to have a majority “maybe in a year.”

Sunday’s events have been a jolt for the party that hours ago seemed poised to make history by putting the far right in power for the first time since World War II.

Meanwhile, Le Pen is expected to run for president again in 2027. Macron can’t run again, but he has vowed to stay in office until the end of his term.

It’s been more than three hours since the first polling projections and a large crowd is still gathered in the Place de la Republique in Paris. A small number of people have climbed the large monument there and a few are waving flags. There have been fireworks.

They had just days to come together. The leaders of France’s left-wing parties have acknowledged they made compromises to unite in an effort to keep the far-right National Rally party from taking power in France.

The coalition calls itself the New Popular Front, named after a similar coalition formed in the 1930s against the rise of fascism in France. It includes environmentalist parties, the French Socialists and Communists and the hard-left France Unbowed party.

Ahead of Sunday’s vote, the leaders of the alliance’s four main parties promised unwavering support for Ukraine. They also promised to reverse a law that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64, raise the minimum wage, adjust salaries and pensions with the inflation rate, and freeze food and energy prices to boost people’s purchasing power.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal says he will turn in his resignation. This comes after projections show a leftist coalition has surged to the lead in legislative elections. But Attal says he will remain in the post during the Paris Olympics and for as long as needed.

The polling projections show that no party has won an outright majority. There likely will be weeks of intense political negotiations to choose a new prime minister and form a government. France’s president risks being forced to share power with a prime minister opposed to his pro-business, pro-European Union policies.

Attal became France’s youngest prime minister earlier this year.

There are growing crowds at République plaza, where the French left traditionally gathers. It erupted in cheers after surprise projections showed a leftist coalition ahead in legislative elections and the far right in third.

The leftist coalition quickly formed in response to speculation that the far-right, anti-immigration National Rally would surge to a historic victory. It could have meant the formation of France’s first far-right government since World War II.

“It’s important that France, one of the founders of the EU, doesn’t have a bad image in the world, the image of a country led by populists,” said Marie Lippini, a 24-year-old student from Aix-en-Provence.

Here’s the first comment from Macron. His office says he’s going to “wait” to make decisions on a new government.

The National Assembly is scheduled to gather in full session for the first time on July 18.

The statement says Macron will ensure the “sovereign choice of the French people will be respected.”

Just minutes ago, Jordan Bardella with the far-right National Rally was thought to be in position to become France’s youngest prime minister. Now the 28-year-old is still claiming historic gains for the party after surprise polling projections put the far right in third place.

In a somber speech, Bardella is blaming Macron for “pushing France into uncertainty and instability.”

He also denounced the political maneuvering that led the National Rally to fall far short of expectations, though it still increased its seat count in parliament to an unprecedented high.

An unprecedented number of candidates who qualified for the runoff stepped aside to allow an opponent to go head-to-head with the National Rally candidate, increasing the chances of defeating them.

The timing of France’s leap into the political unknown could hardly be worse: With the Paris Olympics opening in less than three weeks, the country will be grappling with domestic instability when the eyes of the world are upon it.

The speech by leftist leader Mélenchon is an indication of what’s ahead. He says he will not negotiate with Macron, and Macron has refused to negotiate with him.

Who will lead the government? There is no deadline to form a new one. There could be weeks of discussions ahead. Macron faces the prospect of leading the country alongside a prime minister opposed to most of his domestic policies.

The sharp polarization of French politics is sure to complicate any coalition-building effort. And any cobbled-together majority risks being vulnerable to no-confidence votes that could cause it to fall.

This is uncharted territory for France. Unlike other countries in Europe that are more accustomed to coalition governments, France doesn’t have a tradition of lawmakers from rival political camps coming together to form a working majority.

Leftist leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon calls the results an “immense relief for a majority of people in our country.” He wants the prime minister to resign.

Mélenchon is the most prominent of the leftist leaders who unexpectedly came together ahead of the two-round elections to keep the far right from power. Polling projections have put the leftist coalition in front, followed by President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance and the far right in third.

The lack of majority for any single alliance has plunged France into political and economic turmoil.

Final results are not expected until late Sunday or early Monday. The deeply unpopular Macron has lost control of parliament, according to the projections. The far right National Rally drastically increased the number of seats it holds in parliament but fell far short of expectations.

France now faces the prospect of weeks of political machinations to determine who will be prime minister and lead the National Assembly. And Macron faces the prospect of leading the country alongside a prime minister opposed to most of his domestic policies.

The first projections say French leftists have won most seats in legislative elections. The surprise projections put President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in second and the far right in third.

Republique plaza, where supporters of the left were gathered, has erupted into cheers.

One hour to go before polls close everywhere. We should have the first polling projections then.

In a sign of the uncertainty, far-right National Rally party leader Jordan Bardella won’t be speaking publicly for at least an hour after polls close. Marine Le Pen’s address is set for two hours after the initial results. Both spoke within minutes of polls closing in the first round.

Some big-name stores in Paris are protecting their windows in case of unrest as results come out, but that’s a pretty common precaution.

The captain of France’s national team, Kylian Mbappé, had urged young people to vote and warned against “extremes” at a time when the far right seeks to take power in the parliamentary elections. He didn’t name any politicians or parties by name.

“We are a generation that can make a difference. We can see that the extremes are knocking on the door of power, and we have the opportunity to shape the future of our country,” he said while France prepares to play Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinals on Tuesday.

Teammates Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembélé have also expressed strong opinions about domestic politics and the need to vote.

Macron is meeting with leaders from his weakened majority alliance before polls close. An aide to the president says Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is there. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door meeting.

Many of Macron’s centrist political allies are furious at his decision to call the surprise elections just three weeks after the far-right National Rally trounced his party in European elections. They fear the centrist coalition will be wiped out in favor of the far right and left.

Some French youth are astonished by the number of people supporting the far-right National Rally.

Nawel Marrouchi is 15 and wishes she was old enough to vote. “As a binational, I am directly concerned,” the French-Moroccan said in Paris. She fears racism will gain even more ground: “In my class, one guy said once that foreigners shouldn’t get housing. But my father was an immigrant. They should go to these countries to understand why they are coming here.”

Jessica Saada is 31 and says “I think young people have not woken up yet. They don’t realize.” She is baffled by the party’s past and present positions on issues like wearing a headscarf in public: “It’s just going to cause problems and bring more hate.” Even if the anti-immigration party doesn’t win a majority in parliament, she believes the damage is done.

With three hours to go before polls close, here’s the latest figure on the turnout: 59.71%. It’s the highest turnout since 1981 at this time in the voting day. The overall turnout is on track to be the highest in four decades.

In the restive French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, a pro-independence Indigenous Kanak candidate has won a seat in France’s parliament over a loyalist candidate in the second round of voting.

Emmanuel Tjibaou is a political novice and a son of a well-known Kanak independence leader, Jean-Marie Tjibaou, who was assassinated in 1989. He is the first pro-independence candidate to win a seat in the National Assembly since 1986.

Indigenous Kanaks have long sought to break free from France, which took the archipelago in 1853. Polls closed earlier in New Caledonia because of a curfew imposed in response to the violence that flared last month, leaving nine people dead. There was anger over an attempt to amend the French Constitution and change voting lists, which Indigenous Kanaks feared would further marginalize them.

Right-wing candidate and French loyalist Nicolas Metzdorf has won New Caledonia’s second parliament seat.

Le Pen planted herself in the northern town of Henin-Beaumont in the early 2000s, hoping to win over disenchanted voters feeling left behind by the new economy. It was the start of a decade-long effort to detoxify her anti-immigration National Rally and win over voters from across French society.

Although France has some of the highest standards of living in the world, lower unemployment than it’s had in decades and a relatively low crime rate, discontent has simmered in some areas in the post-industrial era. For many National Rally voters, last Sunday’s victory is revenge on a political class that they see as out of touch with everyday people and their concerns including crime, purchasing power and immigration.

Henin-Beaumont is where Le Pen began to turn her father’s party from political pariah to a voter-friendly alternative. She sought to replicate that strategy on the national level when she took the reins of the party in 2012.

Some of those campaigns include photos of blood-red hands on a Holocaust memorial. Caskets at the Eiffel Tower. A fake French military recruitment drive calling for soldiers in Ukraine, and major French news sites improbably registered in an obscure Pacific territory, population 15,000.

Opposition parties made hurried deals to try to block a landslide victory for Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally in the second round of legislative elections, as she said her party would lead the government only if it won an absolute majority — or close to it.

An unprecedented number of candidates who qualified for round two from the left-wing alliance of the New Popular Front and from President Emmanuel Macron’s weakened centrists have stepped aside to favor the candidate most likely to win against a National Rally opponent.

According to a count by French newspaper Le Monde, some 218 candidates who were eligible to compete in the second round have pulled out. Of those, 130 were on the left, and 82 came from the Macron-led centrist alliance Ensemble.

French President Emmanuel Macron has voted in high-stakes legislative elections that could force him to share power with the rising far right.

Macron called the surprise vote after the anti-immigration, nationalist National Rally made huge gains in the June 9 European elections, taking a huge gamble that French voters would block the far-right party as they always have in the past.

But the National Rally instead won a larger share than ever in the first round on June 30, and its leader Marine Le Pen called on voters to give the party an absolute majority in Round 2.

Sunday’s vote determines which party controls the National Assembly and who will be prime minister. If no party wins an absolute majority, forming a government comes only after extensive negotiations.

As of noon local time, turnout was at 26.63%, according to France’s interior ministry. That’s slightly higher than the 25.90% reported at the same time during the first round of voting last Sunday.

Image

Voters at a Paris polling station were acutely aware of the elections’ far-reaching consequences for France and beyond.

“The individual freedoms, tolerance and respect for others is what at stake today,” said Thomas Bertrand, a 45-year-old voter who works in advertising.

He voted at a school where, as at all French schools, the national motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” was displayed prominently.

Pierre Lubin, a 45-year-old business manager, was worried about whether the elections would produce an effective government.

“This is a concern for us,” Lubin said. “Will it be a technical government or a coalition government made up of (different) political forces?”

Even with the outcome still in doubt, Valerie Dodeman, a 55-year-old legal expert, said she is pessimistic about the future of France.

“No matter what happens, I think this election will leave people disgruntled on all sides,” Dodeman said.

French PM Attal casts vote in pivotal runoff election that could propel the far-right to power

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has cast his ballot in the Paris suburb of Vanves.

Macron is expected to vote later in the seaside town of La Touquet, while Le Pen is not voting after winning her district in northern France outright last week. Across France, 76 candidates secured seats in the first round, including 39 from Le Pen’s National Rally, 32 from the leftist New Popular Front alliance, and two candidates from Macron’s centrist list.

At just 28 years old, Jordan Bardella has helped make the far-right National Rally the strongest political force in France. And now he could become the country’s youngest prime minister.

After voters propelled Marine Le Pen’s National Rally to a strong lead in the first round of snap legislative elections, Bardella turned to rallying supporters to hand their party an absolute majority in the decisive second round that would allow the anti-immigration, nationalist party to run the government, with Bardella at the helm.

Bardella is part of a generation of young people who joined the party under Marine Le Pen in the 2010s but likely wouldn’t have done so under her father.

▶ Read more about Jordan Bardella

Voting has opened in France for the second round of high-stake legislative elections that have already seen the largest gains ever for the country’s far-right National Rally party.

French President Emmanuel Macron took a huge gamble in dissolving parliament and calling for the elections after his centrists were trounced in European elections on June 9. The first round on June 30 saw the largest gains ever for the anti-immigration, nationalist National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen. Sunday’s vote determines which party controls the National Assembly and who will be prime minister.

Image

If support is further eroded for Macron’s weak centrist majority, he will be forced to share power with parties opposed to most of his pro-business, pro-European Union policies.

The second-round voting began Saturday in France’s overseas territories from the South Pacific to the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and North Atlantic. The elections wrap up Sunday at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT) in mainland France. Initial polling projections are expected Sunday night, with early official results expected late Sunday and early Monday.

French voters face a decisive choice in the runoff of snap parliamentary elections that could see the country’s first far-right government since the World War II Nazi occupation — or no majority emerging at all.

Official results suggest Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigration, nationalist party National Rally stands a good chance of winning a majority in the lower house of parliament for the first time, but the outcome remains uncertain amid the complex voting system and political tactics.

Carlos Alcaraz's tribute

Can't disagree, really, can you?

Murray: 'I want to play forever'

The 37-year-old concluded: "It is hard because I would love to keep playing but I can't. Physically it's just too tough now. All of the injuries have added up and like I said they haven't been insignificant.

"I want to play forever. I love this sport. It's given me so much, taught me loads of lessons over the years that I can use for the rest of my life. I don't want to stop so it is hard."

Andy on the support of his family

Speaking after his match, he hailed his parents, saying: "Mum and Dad have been amazing support, still today, but when we were little and allowing us to go and pursue our dreams.

"Jamie left home to go to train when he was 12, then he moved to Paris. I left to go over to Spain.

"I know now having children how, I don't even like them being away for a day so allowing us to go and train abroad and pursue our dreams, we couldn't have done that without their support so thank you mum and dad."

Don't go anywhere

James Hansen/The Athletic

Caroline Wozniacki and Leylah Fernandez were locked at 1-1 and 3-3 when darkness forced their match to stop.

With rain forecast tomorrow, and the tournament just one match — this one! — away from catching up to everybody playing the third round, the match is being finished on Court One. The floodlights are on, the roof is closed, and it's kind of eerie in here.

Wozniacki has saved two match points at 4-5, and has just recovered from a deep and challenging Fernandez return to go on the attack and take the advantage... and she takes the game with a classic one-two punch of serve out wide and forehand cross.

5-5, final set. Don't go anywhere (he says to himself).

Murray added: "I'm not never going to come back here!

"It depends who I'm watching. I hate watching my brother. I find it really difficult to watch my brother play. I love tennis. I watch it all the time.

"I would probably be more comfortable sitting up there in a coaching box rather than somewhere else."

How did Murray celebrate winning Wimbledon in 2016?

He said: "2016 was really different. I felt way less pressure and the enjoyment I got out of that win was totally different to 2013. I had an amazing evening that night with my all friends and family, properly went out and enjoyed it with the people closest to me.

"Of my Slams, 2016 was my favourite one. I don't remember much of that night. I had a few drinks and I did unfortunately vomit in the cab on the way home."

We've all been there.

Murray on how tough it was winning Wimbledon in 2013

He said: "When I got off the court, I didn't remember any of what had happened but I have watched that game back a few times and some of the stuff he was coming up with on the match points was incredible.

"If I had lost that game, it would have been very hard to go on to win. Amazing last game. With my tennis, it's always been a bit of a struggle so that last game was always going to be a bit of a struggle."

With your tennis? Your tennis is incredible, Andrew.

Now let's hear from Andy talking about his career

Talking about playing the 'Big Three' of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, he said: "They were alright weren't they?

"They weren't the easiest guys to get past. I was obviously incredibly fortunate to play in this time and I think all tennis fans have been incredibly lucky to witness what they've obviously gone on to achieve.

"It's been incredible to watch what they've done. It's been incredible to be a part of some of the matches in major championships with them over the years. I was fortunate to manage to get through them a couple of time in big moments but what a time to be on the tour."

Isn't it beautiful.

Murray opens up on 2012 heartbreak

Looking back on his loss against Roger Federer in the 2012 Wimbledon final, he said: "It's always really difficult to speak after a loss, particularly after a Grand Slam final and being at Wimbledon.

"That's the closest I had been and it was obviously difficult. It was quite an important moment in my career. I'm not saying I'm the most outgoing or bubbly personality, but I think people probably saw how much I cared about the sport for the first time maybe.

"Obviously it was an important match and an important moment in my career."

He goes on to say he can imagine himself being more comfortable in the coaches box at Wimbledon rather than the Royal Box, hinting at a future in coaching.

Interesting!

Watch out kids!

He drew laughs from the crowd, characteristically, as he added: "Two of my kids are up there and it's way past their bedtime."

Better wrap things up sharpish then!

Andy: 'Special' playing alongside Jamie today

Andy Murray opened up to Sue Barker on how special it was playing alongside brother Jamie today.

He said: "Yeah, it was obviously really special. We never got the chance to do it before. There was a chance this year.

"Jamie's usual partner was playing with Neal Skupski so he asked me. Obviously it was a bit of a race against time to try to get out here and physically it wasn't easy today but I'm glad we were able to get out there and do this one last time."

Together with our allies, we will be announcing new measures to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses to help protect their cities and civilians from Russian strikes. The United States stands with the people of Ukraine.

A doctor at the children's hospital in Kyiv which was hit by a Russian missile has described the moment of the attack.

Lesia Lysytsia told Sky News there was a light and then a sound - "an awful sound".

She added: "Then you don't hear anything."

She went outside to see where she could be useful.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said at least 16 people, seven of them children, were injured.

Okhmatdyt children's hospital has a lot of patients with serious diseases who need medical support 24 hours a day, Ms Lysytsia said.

"At the moment of attack we were all in the hospital continuing our work," she said.

Following the attack, doctors took care of their patients and then went to the emergency room to help the injured, she added.

Patients are being diverted to other hospitals.

"Almost all our doctors are safe," Ms Lysytsia said.

Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko spoke to Sky News earlier this evening.

He accused Russia of "genocide of the Ukrainian population" after today's attack on the capital city.

The US says it has "raised concerns" with India about its relationship with Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, a US State Department spokesperson told reporters on Monday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin today as part of a two-day visit - his first to Moscow since its invasion of Ukraine started in 2022 (see 9.17am post).

The Indian foreign ministry said the visit was happening at Mr Putin's invitation.

The leaders' meeting involved reviewing their countries' developing bilateral ties and discussing regional and global issues, the ministry added.

Mr Modi has retained a neutral position on the conflict, refraining from publicly criticising Mr Putin's invasion while trying to maintain ties with the West.

However, the partnership between Moscow and New Delhi has become strained since Russia started developing closer ties with India's main rival, China.

The White House also expressed concern about a visit to China by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who travelled there to discuss a potential Ukraine peace deal (see 8.33pm post).

Hungary's prime minister Viktor Orban has backed President Xi Jinping's Ukraine peace deal in an unexpected visit to China.

Mr Orban and Mr Xi met at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing, Chinese state media reported, for what the Hungarian leader described as the third leg of a "peace mission" that he has undertaken without the backing of the European Commission or Ukraine.

Mr Orban angered some European leaders when he visited Moscow for talks with Russia's Vladimir Putin last week.

China, which has close ties to Russia, has been promoting a six-point peace plan it issued with Brazil in May, proposing an international peace conference "at a proper time" and calling for equal participation by both Ukraine and Russia.

Amid an outpouring of anger towards Russia following damage to a children's hospital in Kyiv, Ukraine has also been the subject of solidarity among world leaders.

Those countries offering support in the wake of the attacks include Germany, whose health minister said he had told his Ukrainian counterpart that "we will take in sick children in need at any time".

"The next rescue flight will start on Wednesday," Karl Lauterbach said.

"Putin has shown again by his targeted attack on the children's hospital: he is a war criminal."

As detailed in our previous post, Ukraine has vowed to retaliate to the huge attacks launched by Russia today.

While it is unclear whether this was part of the promised response, the governor of Russia's Belgorod border region said three civilians were killed and several others wounded when Ukrainian shells hit a village today.

Vyacheslav Gladkov said  one man had died of his wounds in the village of Nikolskoye and two more in a nearby hospital.

As we have been reporting, Russia launched a wave of attacks on cities across Ukraine today.

Among the many buildings hit was the main children's hospital in Kyiv.

At least 36 civilians were killed in the strikes across the country.

Parents holding babies walked in the street outside the hospital, dazed and sobbing after the rare daylight aerial attack.

The government proclaimed a day of mourning on Tuesday for one of the worst air attacks of the war, which it said demonstrated that Ukraine urgently needs an upgrade of its air defences from its Western allies.

Air defences shot down 30 of 38 missiles, the air force said. Fifty civilian buildings, including residential houses, a business centre and two medical facilities were damaged in Kyiv, the central cities of Kryvyi Rih and Dnipro and two eastern cities, the interior minister said.

An online video showed a missile falling from the sky towards the children's hospital, followed by a large explosion. The location of the video was verified from visible landmarks. The Security Service of Ukraine identified the missile as a Kh-101 cruise missile.

Twenty-two people, including two children, were killed in Kyiv and 82 more were wounded in the main missile volley and another strike that came two hours later, officials said.

Eleven were confirmed dead in the Dnipropetrovsk region and 64 were wounded, regional officials said.

Three people were killed in the eastern town of Pokrovsk where missiles hit an industrial facility, the governor said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would retaliate and called on Kyiv's Western allies to give a firm response to the attack.

"We will retaliate against these people, we will deliver a powerful response from our side to Russia, for sure. The question to our partners is: can they respond?" he said.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina was tearful after her victory at Wimbledon today following the news of the attacks on her home country.

Svitolina beat her opponent 6-2, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

She wore a black ribbon during the match.

"It's a very difficult day today for Ukrainian people," she said in a post-match interview.

"So yes, it was not easy to focus today on the match. Since the morning, it's very difficult to read the news."

Ukraine has discussed today's deadly Russian onslaught with the International Criminal Court, the country's prosecutor general has said.

Andriy Kostin said he spoke to ICC prosecutor Karim Khan about the attacks and vowed to send "all information and evidence" to the court.

More than 30 people have been killed across Ukraine today.
