Third Day is a Christian Rock band that hails from Marietta, Georgia. They formed in the early 1990s. The band’s name is a reference to the biblical accounts of Jesus’ rising from the dead on the third day following his crucifixion.

It was 1992, that Mac Powell and Mark Lee were playing at Lee’s church, fortunately the same night that David Carr and Tai Anderson played with a band called Bullard Family Singers. After being introduced, realising their mutual interests, the four musicians formed a band. In 1993, whilst still in school, the band started playing more frequently around Atlanta and saved $3000 to record a full-length studio album which would be called “Contagious”. 1000 CDs and cassette copies of the recording were released. While playing in Marietta, Georgia at the Strand Theatre, the owners offered the band a contract to sign with a new independent record label called Gray Dot Records. With a recording contract to their names, the band release the album entitled “Third Day” which sold 20,000 units. Reunion Records bought out their Grey Dot contract and signed the band to a multi-album deal.

In 1998, the band began to work on their next album called “Time” which was produced by Monroe Jones. This album went on to be nominated for a Grammy Award and won a Dove Award. Having entered the studio with so many songs, they decided to make an EP called “Southern Tracks”, with some of the songs that didn’t make the cut. In the band’s live show, they had a worship section.

They embarked on a tour with Jennifer Knapp, and that same year they collaborated on a project “City on a Hill: Songs of Worship and Praise” along with FFH, Caedmon’s Call, Newsboy and Jars of Clay. Everything got bigger than they’d hoped, especially when they played in Australia and New Zealand in 2001. They held a concert at the Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre with an attendance of close to 15,000 people. That same year, the band won five Dove Awards as well as a Grammy. It was their following album that same year that the band released their 5th studio album “Come Together”, released on November 6th 2001, which won two Dove Awards and one more Grammy.

Their album “Wherever You Are” debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 8 and also earned the band their third Grammy award. They were also inducted into the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame on September 19th 2009. Their following studio album “Miracle” was released on November 6th 2012. It charted at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart, following the release, they embarked on a tour that started on February 21st 2013, in Fairfax Virginia, and ended on May 19th 2014 in Orlando, Florida.

Live reviews

Third Day is a Christian rock band out of Georgia. They were formed in the nineties. I got to see them at the Offerings Experience. They played hard rocking music that was at the same time intensely spiritual. Their amazing rock music served the Lord and praised God in every way. It wasn't about being famous rock stars but about showing praise to Jesus. They were great performers, raising their hands to God and showing praise in all their songs.

They got the audience involved asking them to get on their feet and clap, and the audience obliged. The whole crowd loved being up on their feet and clapping for God and Third Day. Everyone was spiritually connected and could feel the spirit flowing over them. It was rock music with purpose and drive for God.

The young people all learned to love Jesus and praise him with music that night. It was a great show with great musicians and God-fearing music lovers. Every second of the show was filled with love and the spirit. I would highly recommend everyone get to see Third Day live and in concert as they will definitely feel the spirit wash over them in the words and music they perform.

This was the best concert I have ever been to. It was perfect! Warren Barfield opened and did an amazing job! He exhibited great faith in God, love for his family and his love for the gift of music, with just him and his guitar. Third Day did such a great job too. Mac took requests from the audience. He sang from deep in his sole. He was a gentleman to the other members, gave them their well deserved spotlights as well. The music was fabulous! the taste of the new album, (new song) was exciting and awesome of course! The night was perfect. Thank you Third Day for adding a new outlook to my life. Blessed be all!!

That was the most powerful Concert ever. I enjoyed every minute of it. Been a long time since I was ever at a Concert like that. I wish I could see more. This is the first Concert I got a VIP to. That was very memorable and I will never forget it. If my Friend didn't pay for me to go I don't think I would of gone. I need to find more CDs of yours. T-shirts and sweatshirts would be nice to find also. I got a t-shirt from the concert that you guys signed and will wear that proudly. Thank you guys soooo much for coming to Bend Oregon. Love you all very much!!!

Please come back to Bend.

I have been to a lot of Rock and Roll Shows...Judas Priest, Aerosmith,Rolling Stones, The Who, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent, Rush, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ozzy Osbourne, B.B. King, all excellent shows. but rarely have i seen an act like Third Day. Not only was it Rock and Roll, they have a stage presence, lights and backdrops, guest performers, and the voice of Mac Powell and the music these gentleman play is uplifting. and when you leave their show you are filled with a sense of well being and above all else LOVE!

I have seen Third Day in concert numerous times. This band was key to my returning to church and the grace of God. I listened to their songs ALL OF THE TIME. After loosing both of my parents, back to back Their music truly helped me through the most challenging times in my life and for that I will always cherish their music. I do wish they would tour the west coast more often...haven't seen them live in over a year and I need me a Third Day fix.

Great show! These guys are so talented. Rich voices. True entertainers. Really glad I was able to see this Farewell show. Sponsored a child this time. Feel like God said it’s time to reach out and care for someone special. Wish the best for these guys.

I haven't been a big Third Day fan, but I must say they are very tight musically. Mac Powell has a strong, unique voice that commands your attention. I hadn't realized that several of the songs they sang were "their" songs. Great overall experience.

They were absolutely amazing!! I have to say that I really did not appreciate their music before seeing them live. But after seeing them, I will not ever miss a show when they come to town!!

Third Day

Veteran rockers Third Day are calling it quits after 25 years, Billboard has learned exclusively. The Grammy winning band heads out in May for a 12-date run produced by Awakening Events and sponsored by Food for the Hungry. The tour kicks off May 31 in Seattle and concludes June 27 at Red Rocks Amphitheater outside Denver. When it wraps, lead vocalist Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and drummer David Carr will pursue different creative ventures.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while now,” Powell tells Billboard. “I’ve had things I’ve wanted to do and Mark is really enjoying writing and David is loving photography now. So our season was coming to a close. It’s bittersweet. I’m sad that it’s coming to a close, but I’m excited about starting the next season of my life.”

Powell and Lee co-founded Third Day while they were still Georgia high school students (later adding guitarist Brad Avery, bassist Tai Anderson and Carr). The band began building a following around Atlanta and releasing independent projects in the early ’90s before inking a deal with Reunion Records. Since then the band has won four Grammys, 24 Gospel Music Assn. Dove Awards and numerous other accolades while populating Christian radio with such hits as “Consuming Fire,” “God of Wonders,” “Show Me Your Glory,” “Come Together,” “I Believe,” “King of Glory,” “Cry Out to Jesus,” “Call my Name,” “I Need a Miracle” and “Soul on Fire.” The band’s final album, 2017’s Revival , was recorded in Muscle Shoals.

Trending on Billboard

Third day talks returning to southern rock roots on 'revival,' shares behind-the-scenes video.

“It’s great that we get a chance to close the chapter in our own timing and in our own way. Nobody is mad at each other,” he says. “We’re still friends and still buds. We’re riding off into the sunset in a good way.”

In addition to performing their hits, the final tour will also feature Lee sharing new music and stories from his critically acclaimed autobiography, Hurt Road, which released last year. Worship leader Matt Maher will be a special guest on the tour, and other guests will be featured in different markets.

“We wanted to go out and do enough cities that would reach around the U.S. to where if someone wanted to get to us, they could,” Powell says of the routing for the farewell tour, which will include stops at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, L.A.’s Citizens Business Bank Arena, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids, MI and the Beacon Theater in New York. Special pre-sale VIP fan experience packages will be available starting March 7. General tickets will be available on March 9.

Following Third Day’s retirement, Powell will continue making music with his band Mac Powell and the Family Reunion. In recent years, the gritty-voiced rocker has pursued a side career in country music, releasing two independent albums and touring solo as well as doing shows with country traditionalist Craig Morgan. “I’ve got a bunch of great people with me,” says Powell, who plans to drop two new albums later this year, including a Christmas record. “[Multi-instrumentalist] Jason Hoard is still playing with me, and we’re just out there making music that we love. If we love it, hopefully other people will love it too. It’s a little bit of everything — a little rock, a bit of gospel and a little bit of country all mixed together. It’s a lot of fun and it’s given me a chance as a writer to explore new and different territory I haven’t had a chance to do with Third Day.”

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Kentucky Oaks Day results from Churchill Downs: Louisville trainer Brad Cox wins two races

third day tour 2023 schedule

Champion older mare of 2023, Idiomatic showed she’ll be a strong contender for the award again in 2024.

With Florent Geroux riding, Idiomatic took the lead entering the final turn and pulled away for a 3 3/4-length victory in Friday’s $1 million, Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes on the Kentucky Oaks undercard at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Louisville’s Brad Cox , Idiomatic covered the 1 1/16 miles on a sloppy track in 1:43.24 and paid $3.66 on a $2 win bet.

Idiomatic, a 5-year-old daughter of Curlin, was making her 2024 debut. She closed her 4-year-old season with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Park, clinching Eclipse Award honors.

“There’s a lot of pressure when you’re the price she is, off the layoff, with the resume she’s got and just being a champion,” Cox said. “I enjoy the position … but there’s some anxiety going on.”

Free Like a Girl finished second, and 2023 Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous was third.

Idiomatic broke a step slow and stalked early leader Dorth Vader, who set fractions of 23.53 seconds for the quarter-mile and 47.00 seconds for the half-mile. Idiomatic began to make her move entering the final turn.

"Once she started getting into her stride, you could tell she was getting into a nice rhythm, and from there she just went on," Geroux said. "You could tell she was looking around a little bit. She gets a little distracted sometimes, but she looks like she’s back to her old self.”

Owned by Juddmonte, Idiomatic has won six straight races and is 10-1-2 in 13 career starts. Cox said facing male horses could be an option for Idiomatic later this year.

“She seems to be every bit as good as she was last year,” Cox said. “We never really know. There’s times when these mares — as they get a little bit older — may not be as good. I think she’s set up for a big year.”

Cox and Geroux also teamed to win the La Troienne in 2020 with Monomoy Girl and 2021 with Shedaresthedevil.

My Mane Squeeze takes Eight Belles Stakes

William Butler — who commonly goes by his nickname, “Buck” — wasn’t feeling his best Friday. The rain, the humidity — it was too much. A co-owner of 3-year-old filly My Mane Squeeze , Butler wanted to go home.

His wife, Loretta Butler, would have none of it.

“She made me stay,” Buck said. “We went down and saw (My Mane Squeeze) in the paddock, and I was overjoyed when I saw her.”

Butler was even happier later in the day, when My Mane Squeeze powered to the lead and held off the favorite, Impel , to win the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs.

The euphoria Butler felt in the aftermath was thanks to one person.

“You know, the only thing I've done right most of my life? I just listen — to her. Not to anybody else,” he said with a laugh, referring to his wife.

Friday marked My Mane Squeeze’s fifth win in eight career starts. And it came on the heels of her worst performance: an eighth-place finish (in a 10-horse field) in the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 30.

“She wasn't feeling real good out at Oaklawn,” said Butler, referring to his star filly, whose worse showing prior to the Fantasy Stakes was third (on two occasions). “She looked (like) her old self here (today).”

My Mane Squeeze won the $600,000, 7-furlong race in 1:22.85, followed by Impel, who went off at 9-2. Asternia , who led in the early going, faded in the late stages and placed third. Halina’s Forte was the last horse on the board, notching fourth place.

My Mane Squeeze returned $15.84 on a $2 wager to win. Impel paid $5.42 to place. Asternia returned $8.92 to show.

Denim and Pearls , like Impel, trained by star trainer Cox, entered as a favorite. But Denim and Pearls never was a factor Friday, finishing in seventh — the worst performance of her career. By far. Before Friday, she had never finished outside the top two in five starts.

Speaking of starts, Butler already was looking ahead to what might be My Mane Squeeze’s next squeeze. Barring something unforeseen, My Mane Squeeze’s next race will be the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes — which will be a 1 ⅛-mile event — next month at Saratoga.

“That's what we want. Look at it. It seems like that's the way she runs, so yeah,” Butler said. “We're very, very happy with this, and this plays right into what my dreams were for her.”

A dream also describes Butler’s day itself. Winning the Eight Belles, he said, is the pinnacle of his ownership career to this point, as it marked his first triumph in a graded-stakes race.

And to think he almost wasn’t there to see it in person.

“I said it to my wife as (My Mane Squeeze began charging toward the front), 'This is where she goes.' And she did. She likes that move right there. And she kept it up, too,” Butler said. “I was a little concerned about this competition, that she might not be able to keep (the lead).

“I honestly did not see the end, but it looked like, you know — I heard the roar.”

-Ryan Black

First Mission, trained by Louisville's Brad Cox, wins Alysheba Stakes

Geroux's heater continued in Friday's seventh race, when he and First Mission ran down T O Saint Denis in the final furlong and won the $750,000, Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes by 4 lengths.

For a third stakes victory of the day, Geroux and the Cox-trained horse covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.03 after another patch of rain passed over Churchill Downs. Geroux will ride Cox's Gin Gin in the Kentucky Oaks.

It was the first start on a wet track for First Mission, a 4-year-old son of Kentucky Derby 133 champion Street Sense. He broke out of Post 3 at even money and returned $4.14 on a $2 wager for the win.

T O Saint Denis was making his eighth start in such conditions — second only to Money Supply with nine.

It showed when the Japanese horse and jockey Ryusei Sakai built a 5-length lead at the quarter-pole with fractions of :22.96 and :46.77.

Cox and Geroux weren't mad about it.

“I was glad we weren’t up there running with him,” the trainer said.

Added the jockey, "I was very content to see him opening up and making the race very spread out. From there, no one can block me in or anything. So, if I’m there, it’s very simple, the best horse is going to win."

First Mission, owned by Godolphin, LLC, improved to 5-2-0 across eight career starts — his second in a row after claiming the Grade 3 Essex Handicap on March 23 at Oaklawn Park.

"We've thought he’s a Grade 1-caliber horse; and we believe there’s one out there with his name on it — maybe multiple," Cox said. "This sets him up to take a swing here in the near future.”

That swing is likely to be the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs; which Cox won last year at Ellis Park with West Will Power.

T O Saint Denis (27-1) paid $17.68 to place, and Il Miracolo (13-1) returned $6.10 to show.

Originally a 10-horse race, the field was cut to eight due to morning-line favorite Tapit Trice and Tumbarumba scratching.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Tapit Trice was the favorite in Kentucky Derby 149 after Forte scratched the morning of the race but placed seventh, 9 1/4 lengths behind Mage in first.

Fast as Flight surprises in Modesty Stakes

Fast as Flight , which went off at 20-1 odds, ran 1 ⅛ miles in 1:50.63 to finish first in the $400,000 Grade 3 Modesty Stakes on Friday at Churchill Downs.

Jose L. Ortiz rode Fast as Flight to victory and paid $43.90 on a $2 win bet.

Sparkle Blue, at 8-1 odds, and Aspen Grove, also at 8-1, finished second and third, respectively, in the race for mares and fillies 4-year-olds and up on the turf.

It was Ortiz’s third victory of the day.

“I had a great trip. I followed Geroux every step of the way. I knew we were going very fast on the backside, and I was on top of him every step of the way,” Ortiz said. “I have ridden her before, and maybe she hasn’t run against these types of horses. As ( Fast as Flight trainer) Martin (Drexler ) told me, I know she has speed. I (followed) his instructions, and it worked out well.”

Sparkle Blue returned $9.80 to place, and Aspen Grove paid $6.10 to show.

Drexler talked about how it took some courage for owner TEC Racing (Elliott S. Logan) to compete in this race.

“I went along with it as long as the horse was doing well, so I didn't have a problem with it. I knew it was a little bit of a tougher spot than we would have liked. I thought maybe a couple of those stakes up in Woodbine would be a little bit better fit for her,” Drexler said. “But it worked out.”

Fast as Flight improved to 5-6-2 with 19 career starts and $806,319 in career earnings.

This was her second race of 2024. She finished second in the Sand Springs Stakes on March 3 at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Drexler said Fast as Flight's next race might be in Toronto or Saratoga, but nothing has been confirmed.

Dynamic Pricing rallies to win Edgewood Stakes

Irad Ortiz Jr. rode Dynamic Pricing to victory in 1:44.10, edging Way to Be Marie in the $600,000, Grade 2 Edgewood Stakes in a photo finish Friday at Churchill Downs in the 1 1/16-mile turf race. It was Ortiz’s eighth race of the day.

The victory was the Irish horse’s first win since she broke her maiden Nov. 4 at Aqueduct in Ozone Park, New York. It was a significant improvement from her seventh-place finish at the Grade 3 Florida Oaks on March 9. Her record now stands at 2-0-1 in four starts.

Hard to Justify, ridden by Flavien Prat , entered the race as the favorite at 2-1 odds. The current record, set in 2009, for the race (1:39.83) remains.

Dynamic Pricing paid $19.82 to win on a $2 wager. Way to Be Marie returned $10.98 to place, and Dancing N Dixie paid $4.82 to show.

Last year, the Cox-trained Heavenly Sunday had the top showing in 1:42.40. Cox didn’t have a horse in the race this year. Instead, Chad Brown trained Dynamic Pricing to victory.

-Alexis Cubit

Ova Charged wins Unbridled Sidney Stakes

Ova Charged ran 5 ½ furlongs in 1:03.71 to finish first in the $332,000, Grade 3 Unbridled Sidney Stakes on Friday at Churchill Downs, beating Secret Money , who went off at 8-1, by a neck.

Geroux rode the Louisiana-bred mare, the 7-2 favorite, to victory, which paid $3.48 on a $2 win bet.

“She usually breaks a lot faster than that … so when she didn't break, I was a little concerned,” trainer Shane Wilson said. “But she put herself right in the race. She's a good mare.”

Ova Charged has now won five straight races, with the previous four coming at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. After her first graded-stakes win, Ova Charged improved her career record to 13-1-0 in 16 starts.

“She likes to run every five to six weeks,” Wilson said. “So, we'll sit down and see what fits in her schedule five to six weeks from now, and then we'll make plans to start hauling.”

Despite rainy weather early in the day, the race remained on the turf.

In 2020, rain caused the race to be moved to the dirt. Ambassador Luna won in 1:03.56. Last year, Bad Beat Brian set the track record in 1:01.53 after beating Smokin’ Jay by 1 ¼ lengths on a firm surface.

Even if the surface changed, Wilson was comfortable in Ova Charged’s ability to run on either turf or dirt.

“She's won nine times on the dirt, and more than likely she'd be the best dirt horse in the race,” Wilson said of the filly. “We're happy, and the yielding didn't concern us at all.”

Kentucky Derby 2024 highlights: Mystik Dan edges Sierra Leone to win Triple Crown's first leg

third day tour 2023 schedule

The 2024 Kentucky Derby was one for the history books as the 150th Run for the Roses came down to a photo finish at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

The first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown was won by Mystik Dan , who edged Sierra Leone by less than a nose at the finish line. Sierra Leone, along with Fierceness, was one of the field's favorites among the 20-horse field .

The most exciting two minutes in sports wound up taking several more after officials had to gather to determine who crossed first between Mystik Dan and Sierra Leone, with third-place finisher Forever Young just another step behind. Forever Young  came excruciatingly close to giving Japan its first Kentucky Derby win.

USA TODAY Sports provided analysis and highlights from Churchill Downs:

Mystik Dan won by a whisker. The key? One great ride.

Saturday, in the 150th Kentucky Derby, 38-year-old journeyman Brian Hernandez delivered one of the great human performances in the history of the race.

And the horse he rode wasn’t too bad, either.

With a rail-skimming ride that was practically perfect in its boldness and timing, Hernandez got 18-1 shot Mystik Dan home by a whisker over the surging Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a three-horse photo finish that left the Churchill Downs crowd of 156,710 initially wondering who had won America’s most famous horse race.

“(Hernandez) was the difference in winning and losing today, for sure,” trainer Kenny McPeek said.

Texas man wins nearly $60,000 on Mystik Dan

Dave Oblisk walked away from Churchill Downs with nearly $60,000 after placing 12 bets on Mystik Dan, the winner of the 150th Kentucky Derby.

After the photo finish between Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone and Forever Young, Oblisk was shaking, his family members said.

"I'm still shaking!" Oblisk, a resident of Austin, Texas, told the Courier Journal , part of the USA TODAY Network.

Watch: Kentucky Derby photo finish

Trainer kenny mcpeek wins kentucky derby after winning kentucky oaks.

Trainer Kenny McPeek had the winning horse in Friday’s Kentucky Oaks and then Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. No trainer has accomplished the feat since Ben Jones in 1952.

"Just brilliant jockey and ride," McPeek said on the NBC broadcast immediately after the race. "The draw helped us from the beginning; we talked about that. I was shocked Dornach broke bad.

"But (jockey) Brian (Hernandez Jr.) is amazing, probably one of the most underrated riders in racing. Not anymore."

Hernandez won the Oaks on Thorpedo Anna on Friday at Churchill Downs before guiding Mystik Dan to the photo-finish win.

"That was the longest few minutes I’ve ever felt in my life," he said on NBC immediately after the race. "It was exciting when we hit the line, but I wasn’t sure if we won, it was quite a rush to sit there and wait for it."

The 2024 Kentucky Derby was an incredible event that somehow exceeded its hype

Here’s what I learned about the Kentucky Derby today: It lives up to the hype and then some.

It’s a great event. The sound that comes from the grandstand as the horses make their turn towards home is something you can’t forget.

Hannah Vanbiber

Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan wore the same bridle to win their races

The press conference ends with the reveal that Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan wore the same bridle to win their races. McPeek says maybe they should auction it off to charity. “That’s a pretty lucky bridle. I gotta get back there and make sure nobody swipes it.”

A Kentucky Derby love story

“Years ago, when Lance and I were dating, he was late to pick me up because he was at the races. I wasn’t going to go,” says Sharilyn Gasaway. Why she’s glad she did? “I didn’t know but my mom knew he was going to ask me to marry him that night.”

McPeek says he felt sure they had won even with that photo finish, and then gets choked up sharing how it felt to turn to his wife who was standing there next to him to see it happen.

'I was just smiling the whole time'

“I was just smiling the whole time. It’s an amazing feeling when you have the horse under you and you now they’re gonna go forward and forward and forward.” Brian Hernandez reflects on how strong Mystik Dan felt throughout the race, from a powerful start with sure footing all the way to the finish.

An emotional win for Mystik Dan owner

“To me, this is for him,” says owner Lance Gasaway, whose father passed away a year ago today. “Dad would’ve loved it, he loved the game."

Thorpedo Anna and Mystik Dan were too fast for each other

Thorpedo Anna, the winner of Friday night's Kentucky Oaks, and Mystik Dan used to be training partners. But then they weren't anymore. Why? McPeek says they were too fast for each other and that you don’t want to push them over the edge.

Jockey jokes about photo finish wait

“From the fastest two minutes in sports to the longest,” says Brian Hernandez with a laugh, referencing the long minutes of waiting to hear which horse won the photo finish.

Mystik Dan jockey reflects on race

“Oh god, did we win the Kentucky Derby?” The thoughts on jockey Brian Hernandez’s mind the second after he crossed the finish line.

“My horse was just cruising along so comfortably, it never felt like we were going that quickly. Other horses were piling up and we had a little pocket there. We may have taken a little off the inside fence but that’s okay," said Hernandez.

Mystik Dan, the 'old soul'

“This horse is an old soul, he’s just so chill,” says Sharilyn Gasaway, one of Mystik Dan’s owners.

No Preakness guarantee yet

Trainer Kenneth McPeek didn’t commit to running in the Preakness. Says he doesn’t make fast moves, "never make a decision until you absolutely have to."

'I believe in mojo'

'I believe in mojo'

(Photo: Hannah Vanbiber / The Athletic)

"I believe in mojo," Mystik Dan trainer Kenneth McPeek said.

McPeek has praise for his jockey, too, not just the mojo. “This is typical Brian, he knows what he’s doing out there. We rarely second guess anything he does.”

Nando Di Fino

What happened to Fierceness?

Favorite Fierceness ultimately finished in 16th, which put him below the alternate, Epic Ride, The offspring of Justified, Just Steel and Just a Touch (who a few people picked as the winner on the broadcast) finished in the bottom five.

Fierceness’ low finish probably took down a lot of exacta and trifecta bets where bettors paired their longshot pick with the 3-1 favorite. I’m sure we’ll get some answers later as to what happened with Fierceness.

Mystik Dan’s jockey still in shock

“It still hasn’t sunk in," said Mystik Dan’s jockey Brian Hernandez. Hernandez hails from Lafayette, La., something Louisianans are very proud of.

"We have to thank all the guys back at the barn…. I don’t know how long it’ll take to sink in but it’s a surreal moment."

Full finishing order

Here is the full finishing order of the 150th Kentucky Derby. Fierceness, the big favorite before the race, finished just behind Epic Ride, who was a late add this week after a scratch.

  • Sierra Leone
  • Forever Young
  • Catching Freedom
  • T O Password
  • Honor Marie
  • Track Phantom
  • West Saratoga
  • Domestic Product
  • Society Man
  • Grand Mo The First
  • Just A Touch

The press is awaiting the winners. As are these hats and seats.

That was an expensive sip

Woodford Reserve made only 150 bottles of the “Baccarat” version. One of those has been set aside for the winner, although it wasn’t clear when they would receive the bottle.

The Baccarat edition costs $15,000. You can get the regular 150 bottle (seen on the stage) for about $45-50 at your local liquor store.

Someone got thirsty?

Here at the winners press conference, it appears someone broke into the Woodford Reserve bottle early and took a nice swig out of one of the bottles.

Given the level of drinking we’ve seen here today, that isn’t too surprising.

Oh, you thought the racing was over?

If you thought the party ended with the Kentucky Derby… not so fast. There’s still racing at Churchill Downs. In about 30 minutes, Race 13 will go off, with several Derby jockeys on different horses. Discreet Mischief is the 9/5 current favorite
