Lauded for his significant contributions to the settlement of the Mormon community in Utah, Jacob Hamblin Home  is another site valued by Utahns.

As a missionary to local Native Americans, the home is noted as a significant structure in Native American history as well.

Today, visitors can tour the home on self-guided tours; best of all, the property is open seven days a week, so any day is a good time to plan your visit.

Notably, the property has been restored to its original furnishings and decor; as such, it’s as close as you can get to walking the same floorboards as this famed Mormon pioneer.

Special to the Mormon religion and both Native American and Utah history, Jacob Hamblin Home is a lovely space to check out when you’re in town.

Capelletti’s – $$

This family-owned Italian bistro is one of the best Italian restaurants in town. The restaurant is owned and operated by Andres & Lorena Cappeletti and their three children.  The restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and makes you feel as if you are at home enjoying a home cooked meal.

St. George is southern Utah's largest city. It occupies an attractive stretch of green beneath red rock cliffs in Utah's desert southwest. Its pleasant winter weather attracts a large number of "snowbirds" from the north, who stay for extended periods in the winter while their neighbors back home get socked. ("Utah's summer spends the winter in St. George" its promoters say.)

St. George has some interesting historic buildings, lots of golf courses and plenty of shopping. The golf courses have been known to double as birdwatching destinations and birds unseen in most of Utah are everywhere in these trees. Downtown is home to the landmark St. George Tabernacle and the winter home of Brigham Young. The St. George Art Museum celebrates Utah-local artist and the sprawling Rosenbruch Wildlife Museum displays over 300 species in detailed dioramas.

Nearby is pretty Snow Canyon State Park (10 miles northwest) and the pleasant alpine wilderness of the Pine Valley Mountains (38 miles north). St. George also works as a base from which to visit Zion National Park (40 miles northeast). Recreational activities of a different sort are available at the casinos in Mesquite, Nevada (30 miles southwest). St. George has a wide selection of lodging and dining options.

Visiting St George Utah? Don’t miss these things to do!

Most people use St George as a base to visit  Zion National Park  and  Bryce , and it’s a shame they completely miss all the great hiking close by.

Since St George is less than 2 hours away from Las Vegas, we’ve done a handful of day trips to climb in Moe’s Valley. Other than that, this was the first time we explored other parts of the city and the hidden gems in the area.

If you’re planning to visit Zion but you’re over the crowds, check out these stunning things to do in St George UT.

Planning Checklist

More resources, 15 best things to do in st george.

I consider St George to be an outdoor destination more than anything else, but if you’re looking for something different, there are several museums and great educational activities for the whole family too.

1. Pioneer Park

375 Red Hills Pkwy, St. George, UT 84770,  map

When we drove up to Pioneer Park, we were blown away by the landscape within the city. The popular thing to do is climb up  Dixie Rock (or Dixie Sugarloaf)  to enjoy the sunset and get the best views of the city.

We also loved the  slot canyons (the St George Narrows),  and we later noticed the  rock climbing  in the park. Because it had rained the day before, we didn’t want to ruin any of the climbs, but we’ll be back for sure.

Local Tip: There are two separate parking lots, one specifically for Dixie Sugarloaf and another that takes you to the loop.

2. Snow Canyon State Park

1002 Snow Canyon Dr, Ivins, UT 84738,  map

Fees:  $15 per vehicle ($10 for Utah residents)

When we visited Snow Canyon State Park, we only had a few hours in the afternoon. We decided to  hike to Scout Cave  and  Jenny’s Canyon .

Scout Cave itself was really beautiful, although the hike overall wasn’t that interesting. Jenny’s Canyon is a short approach and an easy 10 minute stop.

Amazingly, this state park is only 10 minutes from the city. After talking to a few locals, they told us it’s often overlooked by visitors since they are so focused on visiting Zion.

When we have more time, next we want to check out the  Lava Tube Trail , which is the hike that several locals recommended.

Local Tip: There’s a ton of hiking within Snow Canyon, and had we known better, we would have set aside a full day just to explore the rest of the park.

Photo Tip: If you can’t do sunrise or sunset, Scout Cave looks much better in the morning light than the afternoon or evening light.

3. Red Cliffs Recreation Area

345 East Riverside Drive St. George, UT 84790,  map

If you’re looking to explore areas of the desert, check out Red Cliffs Recreation Area. The massive red sandstone cliffs will remind you of how small you are and you can step back in time as you see remnants of a  Virgin Anasazi habitation .

One of the most popular easy trails is the  Red Reef Trail . You can also check out the  Orson Adams House  to get a glimpse at pioneer life and see dinosaur tracks on the  Silver Reef Trail .

Local Tip: Parking is very limited (only 52 general-use parking spaces) which can cause traffic. You also have to drive through tunnels that will only fit vehicles less than 12 feet in height or width.

4. Moe’s Valley Bouldering

37.0699343,-113.6275344,  map

If you boulder, this is by far the best thing to do in St George. People say it’s soft, but regardless of grades, we found the climbs to be a lot of fun. It’s also a great intro to outdoor bouldering if you’re strictly a gym climber.

Our favorite area so far is  Super Mario Land , but I’m sure we’ll continue to find more fun spots in Moe’s Valley.

Local Tip: We picked up  the bouldering guide  at  The Desert Rat  (shop local!). The book covers the entire St George area. Also, if you forget any outdoor gear, this is where you can pick up supplies.

St George Climbing

5. The Bowl AKA the Vortex Hike

37.280004,-113.7413139,  map

The Vortex hike is a unique hike, and if there’s one hike you do near St George, we recommend this one. Not only is the Vortex itself dope, but the entire hike is interesting.

It’s really popular and busy on weekends, but on our mid-week visit, we only saw 1 other group as we were leaving. It’s a moderate hike that is roughly 2.16 miles roundtrip and should take roughly 1-1.5 hours (not including the time you want to hang out there).

Keep in mind that you’ll be driving on unpaved roads for the last 5 miles. It had recently snowed when we went so there were parts of the road that were really muddy with a few sketchy spots. It always helps to have high clearance and 4-wheel drive, but we saw a minivan in the parking lot too.

Photo Tip: The position of the sun makes a huge difference when it comes to photographing the Vortex. You need to either be there at dawn, dusk, or midday when the sun is at its peak to avoid harsh shadows on the rock feature. If it’s a cloudy day, anytime is fine

Hiking Tip: We highly recommend getting an offline map for the trail since some cairns were hard to find. Download Alltrails+ and get the maps so you don’t have to worry about getting lost.

6. Red Hills Desert Garden

We weren’t sure what to expect at this free desert garden. At the entrance, it didn’t seem like anything special. But the further we got in, we were pleasantly surprised at how much fun it was to explore.

It features 5,000 water-efficient plants, dinosaur tracks, and a replica slot canyon. If you plan on visiting Pioneer Park, the Red Hills Desert Garden is right next to it.

Local Tip: There’s a bridge above the artificial slot canyon that’s a great spot to shoot photos of people down below.

7. St George Utah Temple

250 E 400 S, St. George, UT 84770,  map

The temple is hard to miss in St George. It is the longest operating temple of the Church.

When they finish their renovations, they will have an open house where you can check out the inside. After that period, the public won’t be allowed inside but can still enjoy it from the exterior grounds.

Local Tip: The Temple was covered in scaffolding, so I wouldn’t recommend visiting it now, but you can get a great view of it in the distance from Dixie Sugarloaf where you don’t notice the construction.

8. St George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm

2180 E Riverside Dr, St. George, UT 84790,  map

Fee: $10 adult / $5 children

Did you ever have a dinosaur phase as a kid (or are you still into dinosaurs)? I had no idea that St. George had so many fossils in the area.

This museum lets you get up close and personal with fossils and also has five life-sized models. On top of that, there’s a real fossil prep lab at the facility and park to enjoy.

9. Kayenta Art Village

851 Coyote Gulch Ct, Ivins, UT 84738,  map

If you love art, head over to this small community of art galleries and studios. At the Kayenta Art Village, you’ll also find theatre, art festivals, and restaurants.

Local Tip: If there is a specific spot you want to visit, call ahead to get the current hours at a specific shop or gallery. We visited based on the overall village hours and a lot of spots were still closed.

kayenta art village

10. Little Black Mountain Petroglyphs

36.982827, -113.503066,  map

If you love getting a glimpse into history, check out this short 0.8 mi hike to find over 500 individual rock-art designs on the cliffs and boulders, including work from the Great Basin, Western Anasazi, and Lower Colorado River.

Local Tip: The main access route is currently shut down because the state leased land for a gravel pit. The best way to head there is via the Glitter Mine’s direction, but it doesn’t hold up well in rain and impassable during heavy rain.

11. Tuacahn Amphitheater Show →

1100 Tuacahn Dr, Ivins, UT 84738,  map

When we stopped by, they weren’t doing any shows (due to COVID), but seeing it reminded us of the Red Rock amphitheater near Denver.

This beautiful outdoor amphitheater brings music and performances right inside a canyon. The red rock backdrop is absolutely stunning and after our visit, we want to come back to see a show here.

Since opening in 1995, they’ve produced 60+ major musical theatre productions and hosted over 200 concerts. This year, they’ll have productions like Disney’s Frozen, Anastasia, Jersey Boys, and more.

Local Tip: If you want to check out this beautiful amphitheater but don’t have time for a show, they have a Cafe that overlooks the space.

12. Sand Hollow State Park

3351 Sand Hollow Rd, Hurricane, UT 84737,  map

Fees:  $20 weekday / $25 weekend per vehicle ($15 / $20 for Utah residents)

The contrast of red sandstone landscapes and blue waters is stunning. This is one of Utah’s newer state parks and easily one of the most popular for water recreation.

You can boat, fish, and dive at the Sand Hollow Reservoir, ride on the dunes of Sand Mountain, and camp in a campground or beach.

Local Tip: Their social media is a great way to get up-to-date info and current conditions.

See More: 15 Amazing Things to do in Bryce Canyon National Park

13. Quail Creek State Park

472 5300 W, Hurricane, UT 84737,  map

Fee:  $20 per vehicle ($15 for Utah residents)

Boaters and anglers love this reservoir with some of the warmest waters and mild winter climates. On top of that, you can camp, hike, and explore the beautiful landscapes.

The maximum depth of the reservoir is 120 feet, which allows them to stock it with rainbow trout, bullhead catfish, and crappie. There’s also largemouth bass and bluegill.

14. Brigham Young Winter Home

67 W 200 N, St. George, UT 84770,  map

The Brigham Young Winter Home wasn’t open when we visited (also COVID), but we got a chance to check out the exterior.

As noted by the name, it is where Brigham Young and his family lived in the winter months. When it’s open you can take a tour where they tell you about Young’s family life and role in directing the settlement.

brigham young winter home

15. Town Square Park

50 S Main St, St. George, UT 84770,  map

Town Square Park is a beautiful spot right inside the downtown historic district (where we stayed). Not only is it surrounded by the most prominent historic buildings, but it also has water features, plenty of space to relax, and a beautiful vintage  Carousel .

When we went in mid-March, there were several trees with  spring blooms . We also saw a few engagement sessions being shot here.

Local Tip: They hold events throughout the year, including First Night, Art Festivals, Summer Movies on the Square, and more.

Essential Tips

  • Wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water on hikes – especially in the summer. We love  this water bottle  because it keeps our drinks cool and is self-cleaning. Then we can drink straight from the tap. See all our favorite travel water bottles here .
  • Bring  good hiking shoes  that are comfortable and have good traction. St George is outdoorsy and you don’t want to miss the hikes. Some hikes have slick rock.
  • Check the weather. Flash floods can happen and can be deadly, so keep an eye on local weather before hiking.
  • If you plan on visiting the National Parks, pick up an  Annual Pass   to save you time and money.

Elevation in St George Utah

The elevation in St George is 2,700 feet. It’s a bit cooler here than Las Vegas and if you plan on exploring the surrounding areas, keep in mind that the mountains will be colder.

Directions to St George Utah

Most people who visit St George fly to a nearby major airport and drive up to it. They do have a small regional airport but since you need a car to get around, it’s usually easier to  rent a car  and drive in.

  • Las Vegas to St George Utah (119 mi, 1 hr 34 min,  map ) – Take I-15 North all the way.

During our short getaway, we stayed at  The Advenire Hotel , Greater Zion’s first-ever luxury boutique hotel . Located in St. George’s Historic District, it’s a great home base to explore the area.

It was perfect for our style of travel, catering to outdoor enthusiasts who also want to wind down in luxury.

After a long day of exploring, we could come back to relax and find a spot to have dinner within walking distance (plus they have a bar and restaurant inside).

As you enter, you’re greeted with a stunning lobby and view of the bar. The rooms were comfortable and  pet-friendly , so we got to bring our boys with us.  Check out the hotel and book your stay here .

Top 5 Things to Do in St. George, Utah

Explore the st. george historic downtown.

St. George Utah

Kick off your fabulous trip to St George by exploring the quaint and truly unique Historic Downtown district. You’ll find most of the historical buildings and museums along St George Boulevard and the Main Street.

The iconic buildings include the St George Art Museum, St George Children’s Museum, and Town Square Park. Fancy stepping back in time? Take a wander through Ancestor Square, where old stone buildings paint the prettiest of pictures and tell a tale of the city’s yesteryears.

Oh, and The Painted Pony serves delicious food if you get peckish while venturing through the streets.

Top Tip: If you visit between May and October, visit the Downtown Farmer’s Market for an authentic St George experience.

Visit Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park at St George, Utah, USA

Looking for outdoor things to do in St George, Utah? We’ve got a top recommendation: Explore Pioneer Park’s 52 acres of rustic Utah scenery.

The Crack is a fantastic site – picture a cliff split in half by an axe. You can squeeze through this tight 40-yard crack, or admire it from the walkway above if that sounds a little bit too claustrophobic for you.

You can also visit Dixie Rock for some sublime views of St George. And remember to explore the Cavern, a large natural room where echoes travel forever (seeing who can shout the loudest is non-negotiable between you and your party). But the star of the show is Pioneer Park Arch, an iconic natural arch that you can see from the entire park.

Top Tip: If you’re a rock climber, try your luck at The Sun Traverse in the park.

Admire the Red Hills Desert Garden

The Red Hills Desert Garden is situated right by Pioneer Park and features 5,000 desert plants across five acres. You’ll find all sorts of flora here, from the indigenous Arizona Pencil Cholla to the Mexican Redbud.

But it’s not just plants you’ll find in this garden: Dinosaur footprints from Dilophosaurus, Megapnasaurus, and Scuttellosaurus are all there to delight you. There’s also a wonderful stream that passes through the garden and fosters fish like the Woundfin.

Visit the Kayenta Art Village

Kayenta Art Village is a bespoke area just 11 miles from the city center. And we highly recommend you check it out. This is one of those incredible free things to do in St George, Utah, with six unique art galleries, each showcasing excellent local art.

Each of the spaces are unique. For example, the Datura Gallery specializes in Escalante rugs, and Gallery 87 features local artists, like photographer Eline Bandringa.

In between visiting the galleries, walk through the Kayenta Desert Arboretum. And if you’re getting hungry, go to the Xetava Gardens Cafe for a light bite to eat.

Top Tip: Hone your artistic side during workshops and classes at the Makespace Studio.

Join a Sunset UTV Tour

One of the great things about St George is that it’s close to so many fantastic national parks. So the only logical thing to do is end a day with a sunset UTV tour through Zion National Park.

During a fully customizable 4-hour tour, you’ll see iconic Zion National Park landmarks , from the Narrows to Angel’s Landing . If you’ve never been on a UTV before, there’s no need to be worried, as the guides will show you the ropes of this thrilling vehicle.

And, by the end of your adrenaline-pumping tour, you’ll have witnessed unforgettably breathtaking views of the Zion landscape. It’s one of the most romantic things to do in St George, Utah.

Brilliant Things to See & Do in St George

Visit quail creek state park.

Quail Creek State Park in Utah, USA

Admire the beautiful azure blue waters of Quail Creek State Park’s reservoir after a short 18-minute (13.5-mile) drive from St George. This oasis of red rocks encapsulates the pristine waters, where you can enjoy activities like slalom skiing.

But all the fun isn’t just on the water, as the 4.9-mile out-and-back Quail Creek Overlook Trail is a fantastic hike. The reservoir has some of the warmest waters in the state, so it’s a great place to relax on the beachfront.

Hike the Red Reef Trail

Hiking is one of the fantastic dog-friendly things to do in St George, Utah, and this 2.2-mile out-and-back trail is no exception. You’ll start at the Red Reef Campground, where you can fill your water bottles before venturing into the wilderness.

It’s a relatively easy hike as you walk through the narrow canyon and follow a picturesque stream.

As you hike, the path narrows until you reach the gorgeous yet small waterfall cascading down the red canyon walls. It’s a beautiful part of the Red Cliffs with mesmerizing photo opportunities.

Top Tip: For a more challenging hike, continue past the waterfall and join the 5.9-mile-long Cottonwood Canyon trail if your dog (and yourself) can handle it.

Explore the Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum

Looking for indoor things to do in St George, Utah? Look no further than the Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum, 11.5 miles south of the city center.

You’ll learn about the rich history of plane warfare and discover the unique warbirds from World War II. These planes include the notorious Soviet UTI and the Allied F-86 Sabre.

Each aircraft hanger holds a particular plane from the past and present, and the fun doesn’t end there. If you visit in October, join the annual Warbird Fly-In to see these powerful planes in action.

Discover Snow Canyon State Park

Snow Canyon State Park

Explore the diversity at Snow Canyon State Park, an 11.3-mile drive from St George. This is a landscape teeming with spectacular sites, which you can see along the 7-mile scenic drive.

Some of these sites include Jenny’s Canyon – a colorful and impressive slot canyon – and white sand dunes dotting the orange landscape.

Scenic drives are a great way to explore the park, but there are plenty of short hikes also well worth the effort. Of the 28 trails in the park, one of the best include the 2-mile Butterfly Loop Trail.

Top Tip: Jump back into the past along the intense 15.8-mile Gila Trail, which takes you through the iconic Petroglyph Slot Canyon.

Hike the Lava Flow Trail

Don’t leave Snow Canyon State Park just yet, because this 2.5-mile out-and-back trail is a stunner. You’ll traverse the park’s southern region and admire the Instagrammable scenery of the red cliffs ahead.

After a short walk through the countryside, you’ll visit the main event. Three lava tubes made thousands of years ago that act as large caves with ominous blackened walls. They’re a spectacular site and something you must see in person to understand their scale.

Top Tip: Bring a flashlight with you, as the caves can get pretty dark.

Explore the Red Cliffs Conservation Area

st george utah tourist

The Red Cliffs Conservation Area dominates the St George landscape, so it would be silly not to visit. The region is a crossroads between the Colorado Plateau, The Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert, so it promises a unique variety of sites.

If you hike through the Millcreek and Grapevine region, you’ll find towering hoodoos, dinosaur tracks, and beautiful wildflowers. In comparison, the eastern region has iconic arches like Elephant and Babylon that can easily rival those at Arches National Park .

And, of course, the legendary Red Mountains are wonderful to explore, especially along the 1.7-mile Chuckwalla Trail. And for a longer journey, add the Beck Hill Trail, which is notorious for seeing the Mojave Tortoise.

Walk Through St. George Temple

Smack bang in the city center, you’ll find the impressive St George Temple that was built way back in 1877. This building’s stunning all-white exterior is glorious, and an incredible example of Gothic Revival architecture.

Walking through the temple grounds is lovely, as the perfectly manicured gardens set the scene. Upon entering, the Utah landscape is brought indoors with the bright murals in the congregation halls.

Do you know those lines on maps that show the change in height? Well, these petrified dunes are a literal representation of these contour lines.

The hike is easy and is one of the many great things to do in St George, Utah, with kids. You can stick to the trail, but it’s perfectly fine to wander around on these dunes set in stone.

Unique Things to See & Do in St George, Utah: Hidden Gems That are Off the Beaten Track

Petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock

To dive into ancient times, take a 12.4-mile drive into Arizona to visit the Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site – some of the ancient rock carvings are as old as 8,000 years.

A total of 500 petroglyphs adorn the large boulders along the walk. It’s also one of the best things to do in St George, Utah, at night as you can admire the dazzling stars above. Just bring a flashlight so you can see the petroglyphs.

Discover the Bowl Trail

If you’re searching for a unique landmark in St George, enjoy the 2.3-mile out-and-back Bowl Trail. Alright, so it’s a 23-mile drive from St George to the trailhead, but it’s worth the extra traveling.

There are some steep sections on the track, and you may think this trail isn’t that special. But once you reach the summit, you’ll find a spiraling hole known as the vortex.

It’s rare to find such a phenomenon in the wild. And the sweeping views of golden Utah scenery make it all the more special.

Walk Through the Rosenbruch World Wildlife Museum

For one of the more unusual things to do in St George, Utah, visit this museum packed with taxidermied animals. Yes, these figures were once all real animals roaming the wild, but Jim Rosenbruch was an avid international hunter.

There are over 300 animals here, ranging from massive bison to imperious lions. The museum also displays the animals in their natural habitat, so it’s a fully immersive experience.

It’s a bit freaky at first, but you’ll get over it fairly quickly. And it’s a fantastic activity to do on a rainy day in St George.

Sand Hollow State Park in Utah

Sand Hollow State Park is a must-visit attraction near the city, with dunes and unique rock formations reminiscent of prehistoric creatures. The majestic orange dunes ebb and flow throughout the park, creating fantastic beaches for the 1,322-acre reservoir.

You can also explore the fossil preparation lab and learn more about fossil preservation.

Top Tip: You can enjoy this venue, and many more like it with Utah’s Get Out Pass .

Visit Harrisburg Ghost Town

Harrisburg Ghost Town

We love a ghost town – there’s just something so cool about viewing the USA frozen in history.

For more pioneer history, visit the old ghost town of Harrisburg. The first settlers came here in 1859 but quickly left the town by 1892 as floods and grasshopper plagues became regular occurrences.

All that remains are a few stone homes that serve as reminders of the difficult start the settlers had in this region. There is occasional flooding in summer, but this historic town is a lovely place to visit throughout the rest of the year.

Explore the Yant Flats

Last, but certainly not least, we have the 5.3-mile Yant Flats loop trail. The hike is a 27-mile drive from St George in the breathtaking Dixie National Forests, and let’s just say it’s unbelievable.

As you walk, the swirling colors of sandstone paint the landscape in an extraordinary manner. No wonder they have the nickname “Candy Cliffs.” It’s a moderate hike and will take around two and a half hours to complete, but with unforgettable views from Yellow Top, you’ll be glad you made the effort.

In reality, since the town was abandoned, the schoolhouse, cemetery, and a few residences have all been saved and kept up.

Even though a self-guided tour of the ghost town only lasts for approximately an hour, it can be difficult to forecast which buildings will be open at any particular moment.

It’s a wonderful site to wander about whether or not you have access to any of the constructions’ interiors.

Apart from wandering about, it is a good location to feel the breeze and capture good photography.

Visit St George, Utah – A visitors Guide

Imagine gorgeous mountain views, endless desert & incredible canyons. Visit St George, Utah for a quiet, relaxing vacation.

Why visit St. George Utah?

St George is a beautiful destination in the state of Utah and is a popular place for retirees and country lovers. It’s the county’s largest city, with over 87,000 residents (and the number is still rising!). With a very low crime rate, beautiful weather, and everything you could need, there’s no wonder why many people are moving there each and every year.

Many people choose to visit St George for access to the incredible Zion National Park; however, there is so much to explore there; it makes a perfect vacation destination. Whether you are just stopping by, or want a beautiful getaway, there is definitely plenty to see. In this article, we’ll talk about seven tips for exploring St George and its surroundings.

Tips for visiting St. George in Utah

Visit St George Utah

Spend most of your time outdoors

St George is known for its beautiful outdoor scenery, so if you plan to visit, aim to spend most of your time outdoors. While the weather in this area is usually mild, if you’re visiting on vacation, try and avoid coming during the summertime, so that it isn’t too hot when you are hiking or camping. The last thing you want is a bad sunburn and heat stroke to ruin your time away! Some of the most popular outdoor places to visit include Pioneer Park, Sand Hollow State Park, Little Black Mountain , and of course, the Zion. You can spend an entire day just in one of these places, so make sure that you take it into consideration when planning how long you are going to stay.

Keep on the lookout for free attractions

If you’re looking to save money during your visit to St George, then you should certainly keep an eye out for the best free attractions. Most of the time, these are even more fun than the paid attractions! Some of the most popular include Glitter Moutain, Main Street Splash Pad, and Canyons Park. But there are also many museums and other places to visit that are available for a small price, generally under $20. In fact, it’s considered one of the best places to visit on a budget, so if you’re short on cash, it’s the place to go.

Best time to visit Utah

While many people avoid venturing out during the winter, it can make for the best vacation of your life. During the colder months, you can explore the red rocks and mountains without another soul in sight. Just make sure you bring a jacket for the nighttime as it can get cold rather quickly. During the day, however, it’s still comfortable for hiking and walking.

The best months to visit Utah are October, November, March and April. This is when temperatures are between the mid-60s and mid-70s, perfect for exploring the nearby national parks.

Getting around St George, Utah

Since many of the best and most popular destinations are just outside of the town of St George, you should try and take advantage of the public transport as much as possible. It’s much more affordable than hiring a car, and will take you anywhere you want to go. You can even go all the way to the city that never sleeps with the Shuttle from St George to Las Vegas . You can book most of your trips online, and in some places, they can even pick you up from where you are staying. With over 229 square-miles, more than 35 hiking trails, cliffs towering more than 2,000 feet above the canyon floor, and more species of plants than the Hawaiian Islands, Zion National Park is a pretty incredible place. It’s an environment of magic and natural fascination that will challenge what you thought of nature’s capabilities. Coming to Zion National Park means living greater, experiencing greater, and being inspired to a greater plane.

Springdale/Zion

Gunlock Reservoir and Gunlock State Park lie just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan areas of St. George. With incredible views and warm water, this remote lake is the perfect spot for a day in and around the water. Bring your own water toys or rent onsite.

Equal parts refreshing and beautiful, clear, green water dominates Quail Creek State Park. Red, white, and orange cliffs surround the shore, and are set against the powerful Pine Valley Mountains as a backdrop. Greater Zion offers a long season for playing on or in the water with high temperatures in the 80s or above from May to October.

Welcome to Zion National Park’s little brother, Snow Canyon State Park. Criminally underrated and overlooked because of its proximity to Zion, Snow Canyon is a world all its own. Towering sandstone cliffs make you feel small, and rolling petrified sandstone dunes make you feel like you may have gone to a whole new planet.

In the middle of the Greater Zion desert are several water oases, and Sand Hollow State Park is one of those crowning jewels. Whether it’s summer or our mild winters, this 20,000-acre park offers a little of everything – from sitting on the soft, orange shore to diving into emerald green waters to tearing it up on the sand dunes. Sand Hollow is a great destination in and of itself, but also fabulous for a day visit.

‘It was a different world … from what we have today’: Zion Corridor Management Plan plan seeks revamp

ST. GEORGE — Management and preservation plans for the State Route 9 Corridor, which passes through pinyon pines, red rocks, sandstone canyons and rural towns, are being updated.

st george utah tourist

The  Zion Regional Collaborative has received funding from the Utah Department of Transportation to update the  Corridor Management Plan for the State Route 9 Corridor.

The plan was initially created in 2011. The route roughly traces the Virgin River’s path from Hurricane to Zion National Park along state Route 9, expanding to Mt. Carmel Junction this year.

The Utah Department of Transportation recently provided the Zion Regional Collaborative with $55,000, which was met with a $5,000 match from some of the towns along the Zion Scenic Byway.

Emily Friedman, Zion Regional Collaborative coordinator, told St. George News that the grant allows the council to hire a consultant to help gather more public input and update the plan. She said the document should reflect current community needs and federal designation requirements.

“The region had a smaller population, and it was a different world in many ways from what we have today,” Friedman said. “So, I think the initial quarter management plan has a very straightforward take on bringing in visitors and having them enjoy all the different aspects along the border.”

According to Zion National Park records, visitation has nearly doubled in the park since the plan’s inception, from around 2.7 million in 2010 to exceeding 5 million annual visitors in recent years .

Friedman gave Sand Hollow Resivour as another example of growth in Southern Utah, which went from 163,000 visitors in 2011, when the Plan was first approved, to 1.4 million in 2023.

The  Corridor Management Plan for the SR-9 Corridor update will examine how tourists and residents use the byway, the recreation areas, cultural sites, historical sites and natural resources. As such, they are asking for public feedback.

Friedman added that the document is “pretty extensive,” covering many items, from safety infrastructure to interpretive materials. She hopes updates will help communities “strike that balance” between skyrocketing tourism and managing their cultural and historical resources.

LaVerkin City Councilwoman Patty Wise, also a council member for the Zion Regional Collaborative, told St. George News that feedback from residents is vital to this collaborative process as they seek to determine shared values and how those can play out regionally.

“So, to that end, the corridor management plan will be a very useful tool,” Wise said. “I think the timing is critical, and we need to move on it quickly because there’s so much happening in the corridor itself and then out of the corridor that has an influence on it.”

Friedman added, “So we have to have those conversations again and then also to widen our breadth and scope.”

While the original plan provides a strong foundation, Friedman said the communities along the route are encouraged to customize the management plan to “reflect on what they want for their area.” These locations include Springdale, Rockville, Virgin, LaVerkin, Hurricane and Zion National Park, and they have expanded to include East Zion and Mt. Carmel.

“This new broader management plan will extend the plan into those communities so that they can pursue federal designation as well, which we’re really excited about,” Friedman said.

Utah designated the entirety of SR-9 as a State Scenic Byway in 1990. Friedman said the council later desired the additional National Scenic Byway designation. The Federal Highway Administration has two prerequisites to establishing a National Scenic Byway: the existing state Scenic Byway designation and the Corridor Management Plan for the SR-9 Corridor.

Friedman added that the plan must include 14 elements to be accepted by the Federal Highway Administration. One requirement is designation as a Utah Scenic Byway, which requires legislative approval. But, after the byway was approved, the National Scenic Byway program at the federal level was inactive for 10 years. Friedman said the federal government wasn’t accepting applications, hindering the committee from implementing its efforts to obtain federal-level status.

Then, between 2019 and 2020, the federal government called for nominations for the National Scenic Byway program. Friedman said they had to submit what they had already despite it being outdated.

“But as soon as that process was complete, we recognized that we needed to do some work on updating the plan, so our goal is to revisit it through the lens of the region today, which looks — I think many folks would acknowledge — dramatically different in a lot of ways,” Friedman said. “So we have to have those conversations again and then also to widen our breadth and scope.”

Friedman said they are also open to input from people who don’t live in the area.  Various ways, including community meetings, will be offered for people to provide input on fine-tuning the plan.

Wise said she hopes the plan’s update will raise awareness of the route’s value.

“People in general, when they live in an area for the better part of their lives — and that’s where their experience has been — (they) don’t see what outsiders see. They don’t see the value of what we have,” Wise said, referring to the cultural resources and natural landscape unique to the area.

“When you don’t know the value of what you have, you tend to overlook things and get sidetracked into other goals … instead of capitalizing on what we do have,” she added.

The Zion Regional Collaborative consists of municipalities, public land management agencies, state agencies and other interested parties that provide regional planning, which includes:

  • Washington County
  • Zion National Park
  • Bureau of Land Management – St. George Field Office
  • Utah Office of Tourism
  • Utah Department of Transportation

Runners descend on southern Utah for St. George Marathon

Move over, drivers — thousands of runners will be taking to the streets Saturday for the 47th annual St. George Marathon.

Each year, about 5,000 people take part in the race from Central to downtown St. George, with thousands of others participating in associated events. As a result, traffic can be rough with closures and delays along State Route 18 and through parts of Bluff Street and downtown.

Police and race organizers ask residents to plan accordingly.

Established in 1977, the St. George race has grown to become one of the premier marathons in the western U.S., with runners of all skill levels coming to test their skills on a downhill course that features some stunning red rock scenery.

In addition to the marathon, the race weekend includes various festivities, such as an expo, pasta dinner, and a finish line celebration.

As a result, residents and visitors should expect heavy delays on Saturday morning and into the early afternoon. Most of the course is closed throughout the duration of the race, so motorists will need to place ahead. Here are some of the main closures, according to the City of St. George:

  • Closure of westbound traffic on 300 South from 400 East to 500 East.
  • Closure of all streets accessing the race route from SR-18 in Central to Diagonal Street through 200 East.
  • Closure of SR-18 northbound travel lanes from Sunset Blvd to Red Hills Parkway. Traffic that wishes to reach Snow Canyon Parkway must detour west on Sunset and north on 1400 West.
  • Closure of SR-18 at the Snow Canyon Parkway and Red Hills Parkway intersection. Traffic from The Ledges will have 2-way access during the race to and from Snow Canyon Parkway. Traffic from Diamond Valley will have 1-way access (via Pilot Car) to and from the Ledges as local traffic only.
  • Closure of St. George Blvd. at 300 West.
  • Closure of Main Street at 100 South.
  • Removal of all traffic controls at the conclusion of the event.

East-West traffic through downtown is restricted to roads on 400 South and further south. Residents are encouraged to use 700 South and other alternate routes that avoid the downtown area altogether.

The race is set to start at 7 a.m. in its usual spot north of the city along State Route 18 at the base of the Pine Valley Mountains and descending nearly 2,600 feet in elevation back to the finish line downtown.
