• Being a travel nurse is a demanding job. Make sure it’s clear that you’ve undertaken a lot of responsibility, using active verbs like “led,” “contributed,” or “provided.” Don’t underestimate yourself!
• As much as possible, be specific. Don’t say you worked in an infectious disease ward, mention how many beds were in the ward and how long you worked there. Whenever possible, use numbers. If not sure, estimate (as long as it’s within reason!)
• If you’ve had any senior roles or helped to train or guide junior RNs, that’s good to mention. This can help show that you’re reliable and can handle the extra responsibility, which is always a good look.
• Recruiters skim through resumes, and if it’s too long, chances are high they’ll miss crucial information. Keep it short and sweet, while focusing on the unique aspects from each travel nurse job you had.
• A travel nurse resume is your place to shine, so focus on what you do well. Are you particularly skilled in advanced life support? Have you worked in satellite facilities more often than your peers? It should 100 percent be on your resume!

I also know what it takes to be a great nurse, with the help of some of my great friends. In this article we’re merging these topics to share how to optimize your travel nurse resume.

The Travel Nurse Expert: Sarah

Fortunately, I’ve had the pleasure to become friends with an amazing travel nurse (and mentor to other travel nurses!) – Sarah Gaines.

If you’re not familiar, Sarah Gaines is known in the nursing community as The Six Figure Travel Nurse. She’s the creator of the Travel Nurse Course, and honestly, she’s the travel nurse bestie you always wanted.

After she started travel nursing, she found herself making more money, working shifts of her choosing, and living in the cities she wanted. And from there, she continued finding ways to improve her work flow — and the balance between her time spent in scrubs and her time spent in pajamas.

In this post, we are going to break down two common scenarios. How to document travel nursing experience on your resume when:

Before we get into those scenarios, let’s talk about the travel nursing experience for a minute.

Why Travel Nursing is Awesome (& Different)!

Sarah may be a bit biased, but after 20+ travel nurse contracts and earning six figures every year, I can’t say I blame her! Becoming a travel nurse comes with unique opportunities. Travel nurses are often paid more than staff nurses, and the work comes with unique leverage points, like transferable skills. Don’t forget, more freedom of choice (more vacations, anyone?).

With the option to try out different specialities until you find your fit, the possibility of burnout decreases.

Let’s start with the basics.

Why Your Travel Nurse Résumé Matters

Your Travel Nurse resume is your first impression for a hiring manager or recruiter. They will see your work, and what you might be able to bring to their organization or unit.

You wouldn’t show up to a job interview with a coffee stain on your shirt and no idea of the job requirements, would you? Of course not! Well you shouldn’t apply to a job with an outdated, disorganized resume either!

The purpose of your resume as a travel nurse is to showcase your achievements and aptitude. It’s also your opportunity to give an overview of your story before someone meets you in person.

With travel nursing, sometimes there’s no formal interview, so your resume itself holds more weight.

It’s time to break down exactly how to add travel nursing to your resume. As a reminder, we’ll cover two scenarios. 

Scenario 1: How to include experience on your travel nursing resume when you intend to keep traveling

One of the main differences in a traditional résumé and one written for a travel nurse is the layout. Sarah recommends, and I agree, that travel nurse résumés include tables as a way to provide a concise snapshot of your previous experience and assignments.

Travel nurse recruiters are often looking for very specific experience metrics, and including the right information can increase your chances of getting an interview.

It’s also not unheard of to have NO interview! Sometimes your résumé can be enough to get the assignment on the spot.

Here are some essential pieces of information to include in your travel nurse résumé:

• Your availability date
• The census of your previous assignment
• Your charge nurse experience
• Your patient-nurse ratio of your previous assignment
• References who can speak to your skills

As mentioned before, some nurses pursue travel nursing as a way to find their preferred speciality or to afford graduate school. For those nurses, traveling isn’t forever, and writing a resume that leverages a travel nurse’s unique experiences and connections is vital.

• If the Unit took trauma patients, then state that
• Caseload or Patient Ratio
• List some of your specific duties (i.e. “Worked with Swan Ganz”…instead of “provided patient care”), patient types (i.e Neuro, Cardiac, Rehab, etc.), and patient age range
• If you took Charge duty, then clearly list it
• List the types of computer and/or charting systems used
• Supervisor name and contact number if the supervisor can be contacted (Remember this is for a travel nursing assignment not a permanent job)
• Reference names, job titles, and contact information
• State whether it was a permanent job, travel assignment, PRN or other
• If it was a travel assignment, then also list the agency’s name and contact information
• If it was PRN or part time, then list the number of hours per week or the number of shifts per month

Many hospitals require some explanation about gaps in employment of greater than 4 weeks. Therefore, you should list such gaps in your work history. To do so, display a start date, end date, name and explanation for the gap.

Should You List the Hospital or the Agency on Your Travel Nursing Resume?

One of the most common questions we receive is, “Should I list the hospital or the agency on my travel nursing resume?” You should include both the hospital and the agency on your travel nursing resume. The reason is that many hiring managers, VMSs and MSPs will not accept a profile without the employer of record, which is the agency, and a list of the hospitals complete with all the necessary details including unit worked, number of beds, dates of employment, etc.

Even though hiring managers may not spend much time reading your resume, it’s still one of the best ways for a company or recruiter to quickly have a sense of what you bring to the table. Having all the information about your professional qualifications and work history succinctly summarized in one place will allow your recruiter to quickly determine which positions will be a good fit. By creating a solid resume base, you can easily add on and adapt it to each role you apply to in the future, so let’s get started! 

Before writing your resume, you’ll need a foundation to build upon. That's where your travel nurse resume outline comes in: it's a skeleton that organizes all the information you’ll need into neat, streamlined sections. Whether it’s seen by a recruiter, a hiring manager, or an ATS, the general rules that should guide the way your template looks and how it is written remain the same.

Formatting Your Nurse Resume

When it comes to formatting your nurse resume, always remember to keep it simple. Because your application will likely go through an ATS at some point, you want to make it as easy for the tracking system software to read as possible.  So while we’re all for aesthetics, you’re going to need to leave the pizzaz for the actual interview. 

Here are some tips to keep your resume ATS-friendly (and reader):

• Avoid fancy headers or footers.
• Avoid special fonts. We recommend Arial, Trebuchet MS, or Times New Roman. 
• Keep font size easy on the eyes.  For headers, aim for 28-35pt, individual section headers 14-16pt, and body content: 10-12pt.  Don’t go smaller than 10- no ones likes reading fine print! 
• Don't insert pictures, videos, graphs, or any other visuals.  Using a straight line is the only acceptable graphic. 
• Keep it black and white (no fancy font colors or backgrounds).  Do this and you’ll get to show your true colors when you are given the opportunity to speak with the manager. 

Ideal Length of a Nurse Resume

When it comes to nursing, especially travel nursing, having a longer-than-normal resume is okay.  In an industry where it’s common for nurses to switch jobs as frequently as every one to three months, it’s actually expected by hiring managers that your resume will exceed one page! However, for in-person networking, it may be wise to have a short and sweet version with only your most recent and/or relevant work experience listed​.  

A good travel nurse resume concisely details your professional accomplishments, and grammar and vocabulary play a huge role in that. Focus on including a skimmable list of your professional accomplishments, not writing a long essay about them. Structure your entries as bulleted lists, and keep your bullet points as straight-forward as possible, beginning each bullet point with a verb or adjective to avoid writing full sentences.  

Every nurse resume, whether you’re a new grad nurse, an experienced nurse, or travel nurse resume, should have these key sections:

Contact Information: 

Include your full name, phone number, email address, and location.

Professional Summary:  

A brief, compelling statement about your career goals and value proposition.  Ideally, you should optimize this section to include as many relevent keywords you find in the job description as possible.  Doing this will set off bells within the ATS that you are a good match for the job! 

Licenses and Certifications: 

Be sure to note if you have a license in hand for the job you’re applying to! Also, highlight your certifications- all of them! Everything from the basics required for the role, like BLS, all the way to where you’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty, like CCRN.  

Work Experience: 

Detail your professional experience with a focus on achievements, not just duties. In this section, it’s great to include your facilities trauma level, number of beds, and any magnet certification.  This helps to paint the picture of what that experience was like for you!

Education: 

Finally, be sure to list your educational background, with your most recent education listed first.  If you were a scholarship recipient or received any special awards or honors in school, be sure to include that too.  

Bonus sections:  

You want to be sure to include anything that makes you stand out, so if you have volunteer experience, speak multiple languages, received a Daisy or another award, or led any research or major projects, be sure to create a section for those as well! 

As a new grad, you might feel like you don't have much to put on your resume, but that's not true. Here's a few things you should incorporate in order to create a standout new grad nurse resume:

• Focus on Clinical Rotations: Even if you don't have paid work experience, your clinical rotations during nursing school provide valuable experience. Detail the skills you've gained and the types of medical settings you've been exposed to.
• Make Your Education Section Robust: Put more weight on your educational background. In addition to your degree, include any relevant coursework that may have been outside of the normal track, any projects you took lead on, or any research you contributed to.

Do this for each of your licenses, even if they’re not relevant for the current position you’re searching for. Meaning if you’re not interested in returning to Florida for another contract you should still list out that Florida License. Secondly, many of us have worked previous healthcare roles before becoming a nurse (EMTs, Respiratory Therapists, etc.), if you’re still maintaining that license showcase it.

4. Work History

With all the different facilities, employment dates, and job details this becomes the most daunting task when building a travel nurse resume, but it is vital. The recruiter you send this to is almost immediately finding your work history section and looking for the relevant experience. So don’t short yourself!

• Facility name. Make sure you list the full, legal name. If you’re not sure look it up here.
• City and State
• Your Profession during this job.
• Specialty or Department you worked in.
• Start and end dates. Month and year or “Currently working here” is all that’s necessary.
• Employment type.
• Were you employed directly the facility/hospital, or a staffing agency? If staffing agency, disclose which agency.
• Did you work full time or part time?
• Travel contract or PRN?
• Hospital profile:
• Is it a Teaching Hospital?
• EHR/Charting System Used.
• Does it have level classifications: i.e. NICU or Trauma
• Is this a Critical Access Hospital? Look it up here if you’re unsure.
• What is the Unit Bed Count?
• What is the Patient to Nurse Ratio?
• Additional details that look good:
• Did you float to other departments, if so, where?
• What specific patient populations did you work with?
• What equipment types did you use?

Though these details may feel irrelevant to your actual experience as a clinician they guide the recruiter on where they can and cannot place you. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for specific keywords to match against the position they’re trying to fill. The more accurate the match, the more likely the nurse is going to be a strong fit.

Any seasoned travel nurse will tell you that references can get worn out quickly, and it might be best to keep them on hand, ready to provide, but only when absolutely needed.

7. Employment Gaps

Explain any recent (with in the last two years) gaps in employment. Travel nurses typically have some gaps between contracts, so focus here on anything greater than 4 weeks. Less is more. A simple “personal time off” explanation is all that’s needed. Provide the dates and location where you lived.

• Competition. When there’s a great contract, with a strong pay package, in a cool city, during the perfect season, you won’t be alone in applying for that position. If you’ve been traveling for any period of time you’ve probably lost a contract opportunity. Your goal is to win future contracts by preparing ahead of time and building a travel nurse resume that is ready to go.
• Recruiter discretion. A nurse who is organized, ready to go, and a good fit for a travel contract is the ideal candidate to recruiters. Recruiters are tasked with filling hospital needs with the best fit, as soon as possible.  Be sure to articulate your value as a nurse and be able to present yourself on the fly with a kick-ass resume. Sagamore Bridge traffic lanes reopen after fatal crash

State police reported Friday evening that officers were responding to a fatal crash on the Sagamore Bridg e, on Route 6 westbound, according to a Facebook post.

The crash was one of two fatal crashes Friday evening, the state police said. The second was on Route 24 north of Taunton.

The state Department of Transportation reported at around 8:30 p.m. that Route 6 eastbound was closed before the Sagamore Bridge due to a crash. Traffic was being diverted along Scenic Highway in Bourne. All lanes of the bridge were reported open by about 12 a.m. Saturday, the state agency said on X.

Plymouth and Brockton bus service reported at 12:09 a.m. Saturday that buses are proceeding back to Hyannis with passengers from Boston Logan International Airport. All remaining trips for the rest of the evening were cancelled. Service will resume the next morning as scheduled, the bus service said on X.

Fact-Checking Claims About Tim Walz’s Record

Republicans have leveled inaccurate or misleading attacks on Mr. Walz’s response to protests in the summer of 2020, his positions on immigration and his role in the redesign of Minnesota’s flag.

Since Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was announced as the Democratic nominee for vice president, the Trump campaign and its allies have gone on the attack.

Mr. Walz, a former teacher and football coach from Nebraska who served in the National Guard, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and then as Minnesota’s governor in 2018. His branding of former President Donald J. Trump as “weird” this year caught on among Democrats and helped catapult him into the national spotlight and to the top of Vice President Kamala Harris’s list of potential running mates.

The Republican accusations, which include questions over his military service , seem intended at undercutting a re-energized campaign after President Biden stepped aside and Ms. Harris emerged as his replacement at the top of the ticket. Mr. Trump and his allies have criticized, sometimes inaccurately, Mr. Walz’s handling of protests in his state, his immigration policies, his comments about a ladder factory and the redesign of his state’s flag.

Here’s a fact check of some claims.

What Was Said

“Because if we remember the rioting in the summer of 2020, Tim Walz was the guy who let rioters burn down Minneapolis.” — Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican nominee for vice president, during a rally on Wednesday in Philadelphia

This is exaggerated. Mr. Walz has faced criticism for not quickly activating the National Guard to quell civil unrest in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 after the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. But claims that he did not respond at all, or that the city burned down, are hyperbolic.

Mr. Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, and demonstrators took to the streets the next day . The protests intensified, with some vandalizing vehicles and setting fires. More than 700 state troopers and officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ mobile response team were deployed on May 26 to help the city’s police officers, according to a 2022 independent assessment by the state’s Department of Public Safety of the response to the unrest.

But the report noted that issues with communication delayed the deployment of the state National Guard.

The mayor, Jacob Frey, asked Mr. Walz to activate the National Guard the night of May 27. An aide to Mr. Frey texted a colleague around 8 p.m. that Mr. Walz was “hesitating,” documents obtained by the local news media show . The Trump campaign cited these records as evidence of Mr. Walz’s refusal to act.

Mr. Walz has argued that he did not believe Mr. Frey “knew what he was asking for,” and that the mayor did not specify the number of troops, their mission or their abilities.

The city’s police department submitted a written request the night of May 27 for 600 guardsmen. State officials said that the request was not specific enough and that they were waiting for more detail before approving the request, but that city officials were not aware that more detail was needed, according to the 2022 report.

Mr. Frey sent a formal request for troops the morning of May 28, and Mr. Walz activated the National Guard shortly afterward — two days after protests had begun. The Guard tweeted at about 4 p.m. local time that it was ready to respond to the governor’s request.

By that time, one of the city’s police precincts had already been damaged by fire. The Trump campaign also noted that a police officer testified in 2020 that she had heard “thirdhand” that Mr. Walz had said to “give up the precinct”; at the time, a spokesman for Mr. Walz disputed that characterization.

It is also worth noting that Mr. Trump, in a June 2020 phone call with governors, praised Mr. Walz’s response: “Tim Walz. Again, I was very happy with the last couple of days, Tim. You called up big numbers and the big numbers knocked them out so fast.”

“I know him a little bit. I helped him during the riots because his house was surrounded by people that were waving an American flag — doesn’t sound like very bad people. He called me and he was very concerned, very, very concerned that it was going to get out of control. They only had one guard, I guess, it was at the mansion or his house in some form. And he called me. And I said what do you want me to do about it? I was in the White House. He said if you would put out the word that I’m a good person. And I did. I put out the word.” — Mr. Trump in an interview on Fox News on Wednesday

This is misleading. Mr. Trump’s version of events is wrong on several details, and Mr. Walz’s own account noticeably differs.

On April 17, 2020 — more than a month before George Floyd’s murder — hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of Mr. Walz’s residence to protest a stay-at-home order the governor had imposed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

That morning, Mr. Trump had written on social media, “LIBERATE MINNESOTA!,” along with calls to “liberate” other states under lockdown orders.

That day, Mr. Walz said he had tried unsuccessfully to call Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to ask “what they think we could have done differently” to respond to the spread of the virus.

Three days later, on April 20, Mr. Trump wrote that he had received a “very nice call” from Mr. Walz and that “good things are happening.”

In a news conference that day, Mr. Walz said that he had a “very good and long conversation” with Mr. Trump on April 18 — after the protesters had left — about the need for more personal protective equipment and testing abilities.

In an interview with Politico in September 2021 published this week, Mr. Walz said that Mr. Trump’s tweet had “brought armed people to my house” and that Mr. Trump had never responded when he asked what “liberate Minnesota” meant.

“Tim Walz went on TV to talk about trying to help illegal aliens climb over the border wall. Tim Walz championed government-issued IDs, driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, which results in countless motorists being killed each and every year. Tim Walz championed free health care for illegal aliens, which will bankrupt America.” — Stephen Miller, a former Trump administration official, in an interview on Fox News on Tuesday

This is exaggerated. Mr. Miller distorted comments Mr. Walz made regarding a border wall. He is correct that Mr. Walz signed legislation allowing unauthorized immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and giving them publicly subsidized health care coverage through a state program for low-income individuals. But while Mr. Walz championed eligibility expansion, it is unclear whether he supported the health care expansion.

In 2023, Mr. Walz signed legislation expanding driver’s license eligibility to all residents of the state, regardless of immigration status. In a news release , he said he was a “longtime supporter of the bill” and expressed pride at the measure, saying it would make roads safer.

That May, Mr. Walz also signed a budget deal into law that, among other provisions, allowed unauthorized immigrants to enroll in MinnesotaCare , the state’s program for low-income residents. Mr. Walz’s budget had proposed expanding eligibility only to undocumented immigrants under 19, and a local publication reported that he opposed allowing undocumented adults to also have access to the program. His news release at the time did not mention the expansion. Additionally, MinnesotaCare provides subsidized, but not always free insurance. The health care program is funded in part by the state, and the expansion, backed by state money , would not dip into federal coffers and “bankrupt” the country.

Mr. Miller’s comment about Mr. Walz helping immigrants “climb over the border wall” distorts Mr. Walz’s remarks. In an interview last week on CNN , Mr. Walz said that the “United States needs to control its border” but argued that Mr. Trump was “not interested in solving the problem.”

“I always say, let me know how high it is,” he said, wryly expressing the ineffectiveness of a border wall. “If it’s 25 feet, then I’ll invest in the 30-foot ladder factory. That’s not how you stop this.”

He continued, “You stop this using electronics, you stop it using more border control agents, and you stop it by having a legal system that allows for that tradition of allowing folks to come here, just like my relatives did to come here, be able to work and establish the American dream. He’s not interested in that. He wants to demonize.”

“Don’t forget he tried to redesign the Minnesota state flag to look like the Somali national flag. You just can’t get further out there in America.” — Representative Andy Biggs, Republican of Arizona, in an interview on a right-wing streaming platform on Wednesday

False. Minnesota adopted a new flag on May 11, after a monthslong redesign effort and thousands of public submissions. Mr. Walz had little to do with the design, which pays tribute to various facets of the state — not Somalia.

Prompted by criticism that the state’s old flag was offensive to Native Americans and bore too many similarities to other state flags, Minnesota legislators passed a measure in 2023 establishing a commission to redesign the state’s emblems. Mr. Walz signed that legislation into law. The commission received more than 2,000 submissions from the public through October 2023 and decided on a design in December.

The commission — not Mr. Walz — chose and modified a design by Andrew Prekker of Luverne, Minn. Mr. Prekker, who does part-time work in graphic design, said in an interview on local news that he had researched his concept and tried to create imagery that “represented everyone” in the state. Mr. Prekker told PolitiFact that his flag had nothing to do with Somalia.

The new flag has a white eight-point star (representing the North Star, which is the state’s motto, and the many cultures of the state) splashed on a dark blue background (representing the night sky and the shape of the state) on the left and a bright blue field on the right (representing the state’s 11,000 lakes and 6,000 rivers and streams), according to the commission’s final report.

Exploring Siberia: Tomsk

Tomsk is a city and the administrative center of Tomsk Oblast, Russia, located on the Tom River. One of the oldest towns in Siberia, Tomsk celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2004. The oldest in Siberia educative, scientific and innovative center: there are 9 universities, 15 research institutes, 6 business incubators and technology development special economic zone.

Tomsk was established under a decree from Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604 after Toyan, the Tatar duke of Eushta, asked for the Tsar's protection against Kirghiz robbers. The Tsar sent 200 Cossacks to construct a fortress on the bank of the Tom River, overlooking what would become the city of Tomsk. Toyan ceded the land for the fortress to the Tsar.

Today Tomsk has a population of around 500,000,  every sixth person is a student , coming from all over Siberia, Central Asia and even the European part of Russia. Due to this fact, Tomsk probably has a bigger proportion of foreign language speakers than any other Siberian city. Recently Tomsk took the 2nd place as the Russia's most comfortable city . The appealing combination of detailed 'wooden lace' mansions and some extremely old and attractive commercial buildings contrast with Tomsk's more modern outlook and approach to life today.

History of Tomsk

Foundation of tomsk.

According to a large number of archaeological finds, people lived on the territory of today’s Tomsk long before its foundation. At the end of the 16th century, by the time the Russians began to actively explore this region, Siberian Tatars and nomadic peoples at war with them lived here.

In January 1604, a delegation headed by Toyan, the prince of the Eushta Tatars, came to Moscow to the Russian Tsar Boris Godunov with a request to accept them into Russia and to protect them from the attacks of warlike neighbors - the Yenisei Kyrgyz and Kalmyks. In response, Boris Godunov signed a charter on the construction of a town on the lands of the Eushta people on the banks of the Tom River.

In June 1604, the fortress of Tomsk was founded on the southern promontory of Voskresenskaya Mountain towering over the right bank of the Tom. Therefore, the City Day of Tomsk is celebrated on June 7th. In the fall of 1604, all construction work was completed. Tomsk became an important strategic military center. Throughout the 17th century, it protected the local population - in 1614, 1617, 1657, and 1698, the fortress repelled the raids of nomads. In 1635, the population of Tomsk was about 2 thousand people.

Tomsk in the 18th - early 20th centuries

In the 18th century, the borders of Russia moved far to the south and east, the raids of nomads stopped, and Tomsk lost its defensive significance. In 1723, about 8.5 thousand people lived in the town. From the middle of the 18th century, due to its remoteness from the European part of the country, it was used as a place of exile. After the creation of the Siberian Route, which ran from Moscow through Tomsk, the town became an important transit trade center.

In 1804, Tomsk became the administrative center of the huge Tomsk Governorate, which included the territories of the present Republic of Altai, Altai Krai, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, and Tomsk Oblasts, East Kazakhstan Oblast (Kazakhstan), western parts of Khakassia, and Krasnoyarsk Krai. It also became the cultural and economic center of the south of Western Siberia.

From the late 1830s to the middle of the century, the population of Tomsk grew rapidly thanks to the increasing gold mining in Siberia. In 1888, Tomsk University was opened - the first university in Siberia. At the end of the 19th century, during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, it was decided that it should go much south of Tomsk. As a result, it lost its importance as a transport hub.

By the beginning of the 20th century, over 60 thousand people lived in Tomsk. The city had electric lighting, trams, and a telephone network. By 1914, Tomsk, with a population of 114 thousand people, was among the 25 largest cities of the Russian Empire and ranked first in terms of trade turnover in Siberia.

Tomsk after 1917

After the revolutionary events of 1917, Tomsk became a center for the opposition to the Bolshevik forces in Siberia. Until the end of 1919, the city served as a place for the formation and training of units of the White Army.

The period from 1918 to 1940 was a time of relative decline in Tomsk. There was a significant outflow of the population to the fast-growing Novosibirsk and other cities located on the Trans-Siberian Railway, because Tomsk lost the status of the administrative center of the region. In 1925, Tomsk became part of Siberian Krai. In 1930, it was transformed into West Siberian Krai. In 1937, Tomsk became a city of Novosibirsk Oblast.

During the Second World War, about 30 enterprises from the European part of the USSR were evacuated to Tomsk, which became the basis of the city’s industry. During the war years, the volume of industrial production in Tomsk tripled. From 1940 to 1944, the number of residents increased from 145 to 178 thousand people. On August 13, 1944, Tomsk Oblast was formed, and Tomsk became its administrative center.

In the post-war years, new industries appeared in Tomsk - optical-mechanical, electrical, mechanical rubber. Metalworking and mechanical engineering, food and light industries grew significantly. The development of the city and the region was also largely connected with the beginning of the industrial development of oil and natural gas fields.

In 1970, Tomsk, which had a large number of preserved monuments of wooden architecture of the 19th century, was given the status of a historical city. In 1989, the population of Tomsk exceeded half a million people.

In the 1990s, in Tomsk, as in most cities in Russia, there was a decline in industrial production, especially in mechanical engineering focused on military government orders. In 2004, Tomsk celebrated its 400th anniversary.

Tomsk is located in the very heart of Siberia, about 3.6 thousand kilometers east of Moscow, on the border of the West Siberian Plain and the spurs of the Kuznetsk Alatau on the right bank of the Tom River, 50 km from the place of its confluence with the Ob River. The city is located on the edge of a taiga natural zone.

It was named after the Tom River on which it was founded. The researchers of the 18th century derived the hydronym “Tom” from the Ket word “tom” meaning “river”. The City Day of Tomsk is celebrated on June 7.

The climate in Tomsk is continental-cyclonic (transitional from European temperate continental to Siberian sharply continental). Winter is harsh and long, the average temperature in January is minus 17.1 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 18.7 degrees Celsius.

The international airport Tomsk (Bogashevo) named after Nikolai Kamov offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Surgut, Krasnoyarsk, Barnaul, Ulan-Ude, Ufa, Nizhnevartovsk, and a number of other Russian cities.

The current coat of arms of Tomsk is based on the coat of arms adopted in 1785. The silver horse was placed on the coat of arms as a sign that “the horses of this area are the best and the Tatars living nearby have stud farms”. The silver horse remains the symbol of Tomsk to this day.

Tomsk is the oldest educational and scientific center in Siberia. Today, students make up one fifth of the population of Tomsk - more than 117 thousand people.

Wooden architecture of Siberia is a bright page in the history of Russian architecture. In Tomsk, wooden architecture is original and expressive. It is here that whole groups of wooden buildings of the late 19th - early 20th centuries have been preserved. You will need at least three days to explore the large number of local attractions.

Main Attractions of Tomsk

Voskresenskaya Gora (Mountain) - the place where Tomsk was founded. Here you can see such sights of Tomsk as Beloye (White) Lake, Voskresenskaya (Resurrection) Church built in the rare Siberian Baroque style in 1789-1807, the Makushin House of Science - an architectural monument of the early 20th century, which houses the puppet theater “Skomorokh”, the Polish Church (1833). The best view of the surroundings opens from the Museum of the History of Tomsk.

Museum of the History of Tomsk . The building of this museum stands out for its unordinary architecture - a stone building crowned by a wooden observation tower, which you can climb and see Tomsk from above. Here you can find exhibitions about peasant and merchant life, a collection of porcelain, and other interesting historical and archaeological exhibits. One of the most interesting exhibits is a wooden monument to the Russian ruble - a copy of a 1 ruble coin, but 100 times larger than the original. Bakunin Street, 3.

Lagernyy Sad (Camps Garden) - a park with an area of about 40 hectares located on the right bank of the Tom River. Several thousand years ago, ancient settlements were located on this very place. The park got its name due to the fact that the summer camps of the Tomsk infantry regiment were located here in the 18th-19th centuries. Today, it is a huge green area with a large population of animals and birds.

Novo-Sobornaya Square - the central square of Tomsk. The architectural appearance of this square began to take shape in the 1840s. In 2003, the square was decorated with a fountain, in 2004 - a monument to the students of Tomsk, and in 2006— the Victory Alley memorial complex.

Tomsk Regional Museum of Local Lore - the largest museum in Tomsk Oblast with more than 140 thousand exhibits. The museum occupies an Empire style mansion of the 19th century and is dedicated to the history and culture of the Tomsk region. Among the most interesting collections are bronze items of the 5th-2nd centuries BC, old handwritten books, Russian silver coins, ceramics, furniture, personal funds of major researchers and architects. Tomsk Regional Art Museum . It is housed in a magnificent red brick and sandstone mansion built in 1903. This museum has an excellent collection of paintings, graphics, sculpture, arts and crafts, and icons. The exhibition includes canvases created by European painters of the 16th-21st centuries, Russian and Soviet artists of the 18th-21st centuries. Nakhanovich Lane, 3.

Museum of Wooden Architecture . The exposition of this museum is devoted to the main periods in the history of Tomsk wooden architecture. The building of the museum is an architectural monument of federal significance. The main exhibits are wooden fragments of houses (window frames, cornices, pilasters, examples of carved decor). Dozens of contemporary craftsmen showcase their talents in artistic woodworking in a separate hall. Kirov Street, 7.

The First Museum of Slavic Mythology . This museum offers a look at the origins of the Slavic religion - or rather, what was before the arrival of Orthodoxy. The museum collection is dedicated to Slavic epics, folk tales, and their heroes. Zagornaya Street, 12.

“The NKVD Investigative Prison” - a memorial museum located in the basement of the former NKVD prison. It is dedicated to the memory of people who suffered from repression during the Soviet era. The complex consists of the Square of Memory and the exhibition itself. The permanent exhibition is housed in a makeshift prison hall, cells, and the investigator’s office. Monument to Anton Chekhov - an unusual sculpture standing on the embankment of the Tom River opposite the restaurant “Slavyansky Bazar” (the oldest restaurant and one of the oldest buildings in Tomsk, Lenin Square, 10). The monument was created by sculptor L.A. Usov with voluntary donations. The master embodied the image of Chekhov “through the eyes of a drunken man lying in a ditch” according to the inscription on the pedestal. In 1890, during his visit to Sakhalin, Chekhov stayed in Tomsk for a week and found this city boring and not worthy of attention.

Monument to Happiness - one of the most original monuments of Tomsk. It is a bronze figure of a full, extremely pleased, and impudent wolf from the great Soviet cartoon “Once upon a time there was a dog”. Shevchenko Street, 19/1.

Epiphany Cathedral (1777-1784) - one of the oldest churches in Tomsk. This magnificent building constructed in the Siberian Baroque style is located in the very heart of Tomsk. Lenin Square, 7.

White Mosque (1914) - a majestic building constructed in the neo-Moorish style with stone carvings, lancet windows, and doors. Lugovoy Lane, 18.

Siberian Botanical Garden . The garden covers a huge area, more than 120 hectares. There are almost 8 thousand species of plants here including tropical and subtropical. Most of the trees, shrubs, and flowers can be found outdoors. Its grandiose greenhouse is one of the largest and highest in the world. Lenin Avenue, 34/1.

• “House with a Hipped Roof”, also known as the Tomsk Regional Russian-German House - an elegant mansion built at the beginning of the 20th century for the wealthy merchant G.M. Golovanov, a masterpiece of wooden architecture not only in Tomsk, but throughout Siberia (Krasnoarmeyskaya st., 71),
• The mansion of the architect S.V. Khomich (1904) - the architecture of this building is so eclectic that it rather resembles a fabulous gingerbread house (Belinsky, 19),
• Tomsk State University - this building of the oldest university in Siberia, founded in 1888, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Tomsk (Lenin Avenue, 36),
• Garrison House of Officers named after N.N. Yakovlev - a beautiful brick building with original decor (Lenin Avenue, 50),
• Tomsk City Hall (1899) - an eclectic three-story mansion built of red brick and light sandstone located in the city center (Lenin Avenue, 73),

I moved to New Zealand after my life turned upside down. I love working here, but it's not sustainable.

• Camille Fahrnbauer went from travel nursing in the US to New Zealand for a fresh start.
• She found the work culture in New Zealand to be more supportive and less exhausting.
• Despite better work-life balance, lower pay and missing family will bring her back to the US.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Camille Fahrnbauer , a 26-year-old travel nurse from Georgia currently working in New Zealand. It's been edited for length and clarity.

Travel nursing in the US was debilitating. I needed multiple days to recover from the exhaustion of a single shift. So when my husband left me unexpectedly and my life flipped upside down, I took a nursing job in New Zealand .

I was shocked at how different the work culture was. We're adequately staffed, I'm given multiple breaks, and I finally have the energy to care for my patients. My work-life balance is restored and I feel like me again.

Still, I won't be staying.

For a fresh start, I signed a year-long nursing contract in New Zealand

I'd been travel nursing across the West Coast for three years when I started feeling a pull to nurse abroad. I knew I wouldn't be 26 forever and wanted to travel while I could, but the complex process of relocating with my husband and his job was enough of a barrier to keep me put.

Then my husband filed for a divorce without warning, my dog died, and I crushed my ankle in a freak hiking accident, all within a month. I knew I needed a fresh start.

I spent the next six weeks resting my ankle and scouring the internet for international nursing programs. I was limited to English-speaking countries and remembered a fantastic family vacation to New Zealand several years back. I figured it'd be the perfect place to return to. I found a year-long nursing contract in Auckland with great reviews and started the weeks-long documentation process.

I found a flat on Facebook Marketplace that had an open room. It was a huge risk, as I'd be living with five random roommates, but the price was too good to pass up.

Once I finished the application process, I booked a one-way ticket to Auckland. To my surprise after I arrived, the flat I rented was perfectly functional, my roommates were stellar, and I felt settled. I bought a used truck online and started working shortly after.

I've been here about three months, and my nursing lifestyle is already completely different.

My 12-hour shifts are no longer unbearable

In the US, we were just about as short-staffed as we were short on equipment, so every day was absolute chaos. I'd be lucky to escape for a five-minute snack or bathroom break during my 12-hour shift in the ICU. It was an unwritten rule that you didn't take breaks.

I was overworked , exhausted, and functioning on auto-pilot. I didn't have the capacity to give my full attention to two to four patients at once.

There was also a distinct hierarchy . I'd call doctors by their earned titles and knew better than to bother them with my concerns. Everyone was working tirelessly, so we handled most problems on our own.

Meanwhile, at my hospital in New Zealand, the doctors insist on being called by their first names. Everyone treats each other as equals, which makes me feel safe to ask questions and voice my concerns.

I can't speak for all of New Zealand, but at my particular hospital, we're allotted three uninterrupted breaks in each 12-hour shift. We give a stand-by nurse a comprehensive patient report and rest easy knowing that our patient is being cared for while we're on break. Our break room is stocked with tea, bread, and cheese, plus comfortable couches to lounge on. My breaks are rejuvenating and prepare me to return to my shift with focus and precision.

I have a life outside of work, but the pay is lower and I miss my family

At the end of a shift in the States, I'd drive home in silence. It felt like I needed three days of doing nothing to feel like myself again. I hardly had enough physical and mental energy to get out of bed until it was time to clock back in.

A good night's rest is all I need to recover from a shift in New Zealand. The next morning, I'm up early to hike, surf, or take a day trip to explore. I feel like I finally have my life back.

Though I'm happier and healthier than ever, the pay isn't great

I make between one-half to two-thirds of what I did in the US. The financial situation is manageable because I'm single, living with several flatmates, and not looking to make any substantial purchases. I'm still able to explore and travel without budgeting too much. But living on this salary would be difficult in the long term. I also miss my family and friends and know that I'd be unhappy if I couldn't return to my loved ones.

After my contract ends in April 2025, I plan on nursing abroad for a few more years to explore the world and gain experience. Dubai is at the top of my list because it's reported to have a great work-life balance and solid pay.

Ultimately, I'm going back to the States where my family lives. I know it'll be hard to return after being so spoiled, so I plan on returning to school to narrow my focus and open up opportunities for higher-paying work. I'm willing to sacrifice workplace conditions if it means I can achieve the security of a US nursing paycheck and be with my loved ones. Carolina faculty trio win Fulbright awards

Scholars in nursing, Latin American studies, and exercise and nutrition will travel to Nepal, Spain and Finland.

Three UNC-Chapel Hill faculty members recently received awards from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to teach or conduct research abroad during the 2024-25 academic year.

Among the 800 U.S. scholars selected are Carolina’s Suja Davis, clinical associate professor at the School of Nursing; Oswaldo Estrada, professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Romance studies department; and Anthony Hackney, professor in the College’s exercise and sport science department and the Gillings School of Global Public Health’s nutrition department.

“Participation of Carolina faculty in Fulbright supports the global mindset of our campus and enhances the University’s global reputation,” said Giselle Corbie, senior vice provost for faculty affairs. “I am proud of these faculty who will maintain their international connections for years and bring global knowledge and perspectives to their research and teaching.”

Carolina has a long history with the  Fulbright Program . This year, UNC-Chapel Hill was honored as a Top Producing Institution for Fulbright U.S. students for the 14th time for sending over 20 students and recent alumni abroad on Fulbright scholarships for graduate studies, research or teaching.

Suja Davis 

An educator and a health care professional, Davis will be hosted by the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences in Nepal. There she will teach adult health nursing and research courses, conduct workshops and seminars for the faculty and promote faculty scholarship. She will lecture, lead seminars and conduct research to incorporate educational innovations into the nursing curricula.

“The Fulbright Scholar Award is the most widely recognized, prestigious and respected international exchange program in the world,” Davis said. “I aim to build a global network of contacts, which can lead to collaborations and partnerships that benefit Carolina’s SON.”

Oswaldo Estrada 

Estrada is a professor of Spanish and Latin American studies and director of the Faculty Fellows Program at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. In Spain, he will do archival research as part of the Literature, Image and Cultural History research group in the Institute of Language, Literature and Anthropology.

Estrada’s work will focus on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695), a poet from colonial Mexico. Estrada is writing a book about her carols, religious poems and her prologues and dedications to explore how the poet-nun of the Baroque era articulated a feminist discourse that attracts a wide range of readers today.

“My interdisciplinary reading reflects the true nature of the poet who contests calcified differences between male and female,” Estrada said. “I would love to offer undergraduate and graduate courses on Sor Juana’s feminism, in English and Spanish, to serve our students interested in gender studies, feminism and queer studies.”

Anthony Hackney 

Hackney will complete the second year of his Fulbright fellowship at the University of Eastern Finland as the Fulbright-Saastamoinen Distinguished Chair in Health Sciences. Through the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children study, he researches how chronic engagement in physical activity, like sports, may affect the health and physical performance capacities of young girls transitioning to women.

This is Hackney’s fourth Fulbright scholar award. He also serves as the University’s Fulbright faculty liaison in the Center for Faculty Excellence and advises Carolina faculty on developing competitive Fulbright applications.

“If I had to name one thing that has profoundly helped to shape me into the person I am today, it would be the Fulbright program,” Hackney said. “It has made me a better professor in the classroom and the laboratory — a better all-around person — and enriched my life and that of my family. It has been and is a ‘win-win’ experience.”
