Nick Knowles will embark on an incredible journey across the world by train for a new programme on Channel 5 set to air later this week. DIY SOS star Nick teased his 'great new show' to fans on social media earlier today (Dec 13), causing lots of excitement.

60-year-old Nick shared a snap of himself on the South American leg of his adventures on Twitter as he dropped details of the upcoming six-part series. The TV presenter, who lives in Coates near Cirencester , wrote: "Got a great new show for you on Ch5 on Friday at 8pm.

"Travelling thru Peru Meeting some wonderful people and bringing this beautiful friendly country through your telly box into your home 8pm Friday Ch5."

'Nick Knowles' Amazing Railway Adventure' will follow the former I'm A Celebrity campmate as he embarks on a railway journey across Peru's extraordinary landscapes to Machu Picchu. Starting at Puno on Lake Titicaca, Nick's journey takes him to the highest point on this railway line (and the fourth highest train station in the world) at La Reya.

This is not the first travel adventure show Nick has presented, having jetted out to Japan a few years ago for 'Nick Knowles in Japan', which aired in July 2020, in addition to fronting a number of holiday programmes in the noughties. Over the course of six episodes, Nick will visit five countries - Peru, Mexico, Norway, Vietnam, and Malaysia - in addition to the American state of Alaska.

In an interview with Metro.co.uk , Nick reflected on one of the highlights of the upcoming series. He told the publication: "In the opening episode they let me join an archaeological dig in Peru.

"They were scraping away at the bottom of a pit and pulled up a piece of pottery. It was a little brown shard, but when they cleaned it a beautifully painted face appeared.

"It was pre-Inca and part of a shaman’s pot. It was spellbinding to put my hands on something that hadn’t been touched for 1,500 years."

The first episode of Nick Knowles' Amazing Railway Adventures airs on Channel 5 at 8pm on Friday, December 16.

Nick Knowles travels from the Alps to the Adriatic in another entertaining railway adventure as he journeys by train through the breath-taking scenery of Slovenia and Croatia.

His first stop is stunning Lake Bled. Always the good sport, he takes to the crystal-clear waters on a paddleboard (with a watery stumble or two). He tells how Lake Bled became famous due to its resident radical Swiss naturopath Arnold Rikli. Nick is joined on his next train journey by an expert who sheds light on Rikli's visionary ideas, which included a vegetarian diet and nudism.

Next, Nick arrives at Postojna caves, a cavernous underworld full of extraordinary gothic stalagmites with names such as The Skyscraper, The Turtle and The Curtain. There he finds a full railway system, a concert hall with wondrous acoustics and a strange dragon-like creature!

In Slovenia's capital city, the impressively green Ljubljana, Nick scales the rooftops to delve into one of the city's most popular pastimes, urban beekeeping, and rides the funicular to the city's magnificent castle on the hill, built to defend from Ottoman invasions.

Following the route of the Orient Express, Nick travels to Zagreb where he luxuriates in a sumptuous hotel frequented by wealthy passengers and celebrities alike, and enjoys a signature Orient Express cocktail.

In the morning, he heads to a shunting yard where he learns about Croatia's tilting trains – and then boards one, bound for Split. On the way he jumps off at a secret and beautiful wood, joining a local truffle hunter in search of "black gold", Croatia's highly prized - and priced - black truffles.

In the city of Split, Nick is thrilled to join a team of archaeologists at the Roman site of the city of Salona in the Roman Empire's region of Dalmatia before going from ruins to the riches of the emperor Diocletian's retirement palace, one of the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture in the world.

nick knowles train journeys 2023

Great series this 👍 but it cannot go uncommented - the amazement he showed when experiencing the Croatian tilting train !! British Rail invented this - the APT in 1972 !!! That’s 52 years ago Nick and from your own country….. the prototype reached a speed of 162.2 mph (261 kph)……. But Britain being Britain gave up on this unique at the time project, and sold the tech to other railways. So Nick if you want to be amazed again, simply take almost any Inter city train from London Euston and they will tilt too……. They though are from Italy & not the country they were invented in !!

Knowles to travel for two C5 series, made in-house

Channel 5 has announced two travel series to be presented by Nick Knowles. They will be produced by Viacom International Studios (VIS)UK, which also makes Channel 5 format Big House Clearout, fronted by Knowles.

Revealed at an RTS West of England ‘In Conversation’ session last night, Nick Knowles’ Big Adventure-The American Southwest – an adventure series across the US’s Grand Canyon and Death Valley, and Nick Knowles’ Big Railway Adventures –a six-part travel series following six iconic railways journeys, have both been commissioned by Adrian Padmore, commissioning editor, Non-Scripted, Channel 5/Paramount+.

Nick Knowles’ Big Adventure -The American Southwest – is a four-part (4 x 60’) series. In the Grand Canyon, he’ll meet the ancient Native American tribe who call it home. He will kayak in the Colorado River, hike through the Vermilion Cliffs and see a conservation breeding programme at work which is successfully bringing back endangered condors to the Canyon. The series will also follow Knowles 400 miles to the west to Death Valley, where he will spend time with locals and learn how to survive in the hottest place on earth with temperatures regularly hitting 50 degrees centigrade.

Nick Knowles says: “I’ll be pushing myself to the limits with heat, altitude, deep caving, kayaking and trying to overcome my natural vertigo (which I’ve kept quiet until now).”

Nick Knowles’ Big Railway Adventures follows as Knowles travels the world by train in six one-hour-long episodes (6×60’). His journeys will take in multiple countries and continents to see some of the most dramatic railways . Along the way he will explore the lifestyles of the richest and poorest in some of the world’s most exotic- and beautiful- destinations. Journeys will include the 4th highest railway in the world leading to Machu Picchu in Peru, the Copper Canyon Railway in Mexico and Norway’s Nordland line from Trondheim to Bodo within the Arctic Circle. Later journeys include iconic routes through Alaska, Malaysia and India.

Nick Knowles adds: “My love of trains developed when I was a child and my father would take me to stand on a bridge in Southall, London, to watch old steam locomotives run by underneath. I have also been fascinated by, have visited and have even lived with indigenous cultures in Australia and the Navajo in the US. A chance to combine the two with some of the best camera men and film makers to showcase the wonders of the world is a lifetime’s ambition made real.”

Channel 5’s Adrian Padmore says: “We’re thrilled to be launching Nick Knowles compelling talent into a completely different factual space. Big Adventure and Big Railway Adventures will see him like we have never seen him before, from facing death defying environments to extreme railway journeys. We’re hoping this will be an eye opening treat for the Channel 5 audience.”

Nick Knowles’ Big Adventure-The American Southwest and Nick Knowles’ Big Railway Adventures are executive produced by Oliver Wright at Viacom International Studios (VIS) UK. For both series, Nick Knowles’ Big Railway Adventures and Nick Knowles’ Big Adventure-The American Southwest, the series editor is Grace Kitto, the producer is Andy Hall and the series director Ben Southwell.

Amazing Railway Adventures With Nick Knowles | Series 2 Preview (Channel 5)

Nick’s latest Railway Adventure is a tale of three capital cities, taking in Prague in the Czech Republic, Bratislava in Slovakia and Budapest in Hungary.

nick knowles train journeys 2023

His journey begins in Prague, where he learns about the city’s remarkable and complex 600-year-old astronomical clock from its keeper. He’s even allowed to activate its extraordinary striking mechanism.

Departing Prague for Bratislava, he talks to an expert on Dvorak, who reveals the Czech composer was a huge fan of trains, dropping into the railway station in Prague almost every day.

Nick’s visit to Bratislava gets off to a terrifying start with a precipitous clamber around the perimeter of an observation tower. For a man with an extreme fear of heights, balancing on a narrow ledge with a near-300-foot drop is the ultimate challenge, and it takes a toll.

Nick soon recovers, and wanders through the city where he encounters nearly 100 vintage and classic cars arriving in Bratislava at the end of a 500km race.

Nick’s second train takes him across the border into Hungary, where he discovers Swabian culture is being preserved. The Danube Swabians are the descendants of immigrants from south-west Germany, and they teach Nick a dance from the land of their forefathers.

The next stop is the Hungarian Railway Museum, a paradise for train enthusiasts. The undoubted highlight for Nick is when he single-handedly rotates a 147 ton steam engine, thanks to one of the world’s largest functioning turntables.

In Budapest, Nick embarks on a river cruise with two reality TV stars to hear how young Hungarians view their country, past, present and future, then takes a journey on a steam railway.

At just over seven miles long it’s the world’s longest railway run by children, although there is adult supervision. Discovering these impressive young ticket sellers, guards and their colleagues makes for an enchanting finale to a fascinating adventure.

Returns Friday 22nd September on Channel 5.
