Our advice: plan your itinerary before leaving home. That way you won't waste precious seconds standing on a street corner deciding where to go next. Note: The best time to visit New York City is between April and June or September through November. This way, you'll avoid the sweltering temps and smell of rotting garbage that permeate the city in summer, and the crowds and high prices that permeate this season.

It's easy to fall in love with Boston in any season. The city's cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and beautiful harbor beckon visitors to grab their cameras and stay a while. In the heart of the town center, charming Quincy Market invites tourists to sample delicious foods and practice a bit of retail therapy.

One of the top things to do in this revolutionary city is walk the Freedom Trail . Winding its way around the center, this famous path passes 16 important historic sites (like the Old State House , Paul Revere House , Boston Common , and the site of the Boston Massacre ), all of which bring the past to life.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is where it's at. With buskers, street performers, food stalls, and eclectic shops, you could spend hours in this fun spot. I grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, RI and then lived in Southern Florida. Some of my greatest childhood vacations were in Martha’s Vineyard! This list is great!

I have a good experience of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to explore the beauty of this alluring garden and always spent lovely time there. It is a really good place for fun and tourists can enjoy the hiking and many other most exciting activities.

Yes it is one of my absolute favorite places, so gorgeous! 🙂

you said the best time to visit East coast the USA is November to February. I’m planning my trip in mid October. What will you recommend this? Also, tell me how many days will be enough in the US if I just want to explore the Cali and Michigan

Yes, mid October is a great time to visit the East Coast! October/November you might see some leaves changing colors for fall, which is very hard to time right. The US is huge so you would need to save time by flying between California and Michigan. It depends, you can see maybe some of one area of Michigan like Ann Arbor in a weekend, but California is huge and each major city might ideally require at least 3 to 4 days to fully enjoy from: (in order of my favorites): San Diego to San Francisco to LA.

Absolutely October is a great time to visit the East Coast, you might even be lucky to see the fall foliage leaves changing colors! California and Michigan are far apart so it depends on how much you want to see but if you have a limited amount of time at least 3-5 days each per city. Keep in mind California’s many destinations like San Francisco or LA or San Diego can also be far apart too and you need at least 3-5 days for each city in California! Hope that helps! 🙂

Whether you're looking for a summer hotspot full of excitement and entertainment and brimming with crowds, or want to escape to a quieter small town this season, the shores on the East Coast have a little something for everyone. From charming, historic New England towns to tropical Southern getaways, there is so much to explore this summer.

There are 14 states that make up this stretch of the US, and each one has its own atmosphere, climate, and culture. From Cape Cod to the Florida Keys , the Atlantic Seaboard is home to a wide variety of vacation destinations. Here are 14 of the best East Coast beach towns in the US.

Bar Harbor, ME

Much of Maine's Mt. Desert Island is covered by Acadia National Park —home to climbs like Cadillac Mountain and a sophisticated system of carriage roads financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. But on the island's northeast corner, charming Bar Harbor is a destination in its own right. Skirting Frenchmen Bay, Bar Harbor began drawing visitors as far back as the mid-19th century when some of the Hudson River School, a group of artists that included the likes of Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, were taken with Maine's Down East landscapes. Still picturesque, Bar Harbor is now a full-fledged tourist town with a bustling main street, whale-watching tours, and of course, easy access to Acadia.

Rockport, MA

The North Shore, a group of towns in Greater Boston, is a culturally important swath of Massachusetts. The coastal region is known for its excellent seafood, beautiful beaches, and historic landmarks. Many a good film has been filmed here as well, such as Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester-by-the-Sea . There are many towns worth visiting, but Rockport is a favorite among travelers. Forty miles north of Boston, the town has a can't-miss natural gem in Halibut Point State Park, from which visitors can spot Maine in the distance 80 miles away. Rockport is also beloved by art history buffs: it is home to Motif Number 1, a fishing shack with the superlative “the most-often painted building in America.” It was built in 1840, and was a popular subject because it represented New England’s nautical character. (And it didn’t hurt that the light hit it just so.) A replica was built promptly following the historic Blizzard of 1978, which destroyed the original. Ferries deliver day trippers to this little Martha’s Vineyard town daily and the colorful gingerbread houses for which Oak Bluffs is known are straight out of a storybook. Visitors walk straight off their boats into Ocean Park, a circular green overlooking the sea, encircled by said houses, with a frothy, delicate gazebo sitting in the center. Oak Bluffs has a long history of welcoming Black visitors, and today it is home to the annual African-American Film Festival .

Today however, they are museums. The most famous two are The Breakers and Rosecliff. The Newport mansions famously earned the ire of writer Joan Didion, who wrote in her essay The Seacoast of Despair, “To stand in the dining room of ‘The Breakers’ is to imagine fleeing it, pleading migraine.” Today, in lieu of the Great Gatsby -esque lawn parties of yore where swans roamed the grounds, Newport attracts visitors of all stripes for events such as the Newport Folk Festival.

The final stop on the eastern tip of Long Island, Montauk is appropriately known as the End. (Although some residents of Long Island’s furthest out town argue that if you really think about it, it’s actually the Beginning.) Montauk feels more remote and low-key than its luxurious, sceney Hamptons counterparts. Every visit to Montauk should include a stop at the Montauk Point Light House, which was commissioned by President George Washington in 1796. It is still operating, and the panoramic views from the top are out of this world.

You won't find bustling boardwalks, sleek hotels, or grids of cars with clunky bike racks trapped in traffic in Chincoteague. This coastal town is all about the wildlife—specifically its wild horses . Visitors flock to the island annually for the Pony Penning that has been held since 1925. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department holds the event, and it consists of a pony swim—in which the animals cross the Assateague Channel—and a pony auction. No one really knows how this population of horses came to be, though there are competing theories. Some say they are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked en route to Peru in the 17th century. Others claim they were left long ago by pirates. Still others say they are runaways from mainland farmers. The quaint beauty of Chincoteague includes trails for hiking, beaches, and a red and white lighthouse. Hundreds of shipwrecks nearby—caused by the region's shifting sands and heavily trafficked waters—have given the surrounding waters the moniker “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” and the nearby USS Huron is a popular scuba dive site.

Pawleys Island is so small that its year-round population hovers around 100 people. It was first settled in the 1500s, making it one of the oldest beach towns in the US. With that amount of history, there is, of course, a ghost story to go with it: There have been sightings of the Gray Man, a ghost whose appearance is said to warn of hurricanes as he paces up and down the beach, dating to a 19th-century storm. Summer options on Pawleys Island that are not at all spooky—besides flopping around on the beach—include golf, fishing, walking sculpture-filled gardens, and feasting on Lowcountry cuisine like She Crab soup.

Aside from the deliciously warm weather and miles of beaches to traverse, Myrtle Beach is also home to a great many golf courses, amusement parks, water parks, and an iconic boardwalk with a massive 187-foot-tall Ferris Wheel.

Just a short drive from Savannah , Georgia, this coastal community is in the perfect spot for a day trip . Even during the summer, some parts of it manage to maintain that small-town vibe and don't get unbearably crowded, boasting an assortment of adorable ice cream and coffee shops, long stretches of sandy beaches, and great waterfront access. There's a little something for everyone from families to couples— South Beach is better for those who want a little excitement in their atmosphere, whereas North Beach is a bit more quiet and contained. I've found it particularly great for families (having traveled here with a multigenerational group ages 1-68), and recommend the kitschy Original Crab Shack for a memorable meal.

Siesta Key, FL

While we love the beach towns listed above, the only part of the East Coast that has a true tropical climate is the lower half of Florida. Naturally, the beaches in this area are very beautiful. We want to laud Siesta Key in particular for its fine sand, which comes from the Appalachian Mountains and is made up almost entirely of cool and reflective quartz, its waterfront dining and drinking, and its excellence for water sports like parasailing. The three beaches to visit on Siesta Key are Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, and Turtle Beach.

New York , one of the East Coast major cities, is a vibrant mixture of art, food, fashion, and entertainment. It is one of the best East Coast cities with a myriad of iconic things to see and do.

The Empire State Building stands 380 meters high, and its main observation deck is on the 86th floor. It is still the 44th highest skyscraper in the world and is spectacular to visit at night (open till 02.00). The One World Trade Centre is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. The 93-meter high Statue of Liberty is another must-see. You can get there by ferry, and there is also a museum that is worth visiting.

A trip yo New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Central Park one of the absolute must-see places on the East Coats. It sits in the middle of Manhattan and is huge with 25,000 trees, a lake, ponds and fountains. The easiest way to explore is on foot or by metro.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art backs onto Fifth Avenue and contains 5,000 years of art from all over the world – if you love art, it could take you a whole day to see it all! Other places to visit include the Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, and Brooklyn Bridge plus the myriad of different shops. Grab an early dinner because Broadway is a must-do in the evening – there are 41 shows to choose from!

I recommend staying in Hotel 32 32 situated in the heart of Mid-town East, just one block from the subway and within walking distance of Times Square and other famous landmarks. Rooms are contemporarily styled with marble bathrooms and flat-screen TV, and many have a small kitchen.

Washington, DC

No travel to East Coast USA is complete without a visit to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC – one of the best cities on the East Coast. This beautiful and historic city is located 5 hours south of New York City on the East Coast. DC is best known for its politics and historic landmarks, but it is also a city filled with vibrant neighbourhoods, incredible nature and great food.

Must see locations include walking on the National Mall and taking in the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, White House, and Capitol building. Tip : Make sure you check them out at night when there are fewer crowds and beautiful photo ops!

Take time to explore one or two of the free 18 Smithsonian museums and galleries in the city. If exploring outdoors is more your interest, you can’t go wrong visiting Rock Creek Park located in the middle of the city with 2000 acres of lovely trails and bridges.

Off the tourist path, check Union Market in NE and the lively H Street Corridor with some of the best local restaurants. You can even take the only free Streetcar up and down H Street. (Highly recommend Toki Underground or Maketto).

Washington, DC, has many great hotels at all price points. The best mid-budget hotel with a fabulous location is the Hyatt House at the Wharf in Southwest DC. It is close to downtown offers suites with kitchenettes and waterfront views!

Miami in the South of Florida, the Sunshine State is one of the best places to visit on the gold coast, especially for beach-goers.

Miami Beach, part of Miami located on a barrier island, features miles of perfect sandy beaches. The South Beach area is especially alive and kicking.

Apart from the fantastic beaches, one can enjoy high-end cuisine in many eclectic restaurants and party the night away at the many stylish clubs. Miami is undeniably one of the best East Coast vacations spots.

South Beach’s Art Deco historic district features several pastel-coloured houses including Versace’s House bearing witness to the shooting of Versace right on the stairs of his mansion. It’s a picturesque area to stroll through. Street art is abundant too, and many a mural adorn the district’s streets.

Miami Downtown is a lively business district with plenty of shopping opportunities and cultural venues. There too, you can admire some fantastic street art. Miami spreads out into all sides in culturally diverse districts. Among those, at least Little Havana and Coconut Grove are a must-see too.

What’s terrific about Miami and its surroundings is how compact it is and how good the public transport infrastructure is – it’s easy to get around Miami without a car .

Boston, one of the biggest East Coast cities of USA is also one of the oldest settlements in the USA. It was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula, Atlantic Ocean in 1630 by Puritan settlers from the English town of the same name. Here you can find many historical sites, museums, parks, universities. Boston is one of the best places to visit in the East Coast for history buffs.

The best place to start your visit is downtown. From South Station, where you will probably arrive in the city, visit Chinatown first and Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. From there continue to Old State House. In the historic Faneuil Hall Market, where you can find many restaurants. You should try their baked beans, clam chowder, lobster sandwich, and oysters.

Continue to the north to find the Freedom Trail that comprises American Revolution sites set on a path marked with red lines on the 2.5-mile sidewalk. It starts at the Boston Common, America’s oldest public park, and ends at the famed Bunker Hill Monument.

If you are a baseball fan, you should head west and visit Fenway Park with almost 38,000 seats, home to the Red Sox team since 1912. It hosted the World Series 11 times.

Boston is also home to the centre of knowledge with some of the best schools and universities including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lesley University, and Hult International Business School in Cambridge.

New Orleans is one of the best East Coast cities for bubbling excitement and history at every turn. With some of the most delicious food and drinks in the country, fantastic music and very entertaining nightlife – it really is one of the best places to travel on the East Coast, that often gets overlooked!

Top things to do here include taking a food tour. It’s a great way to get a sampling of all the local cuisines and learn the difference between Creole and Cajun cooking. See a live jazz show – New Orleans is the place where jazz was born. Here, you’ll find many incredible live jazz shows at night. Take a cemetery tour – NOLA’s historical tombs are above ground (due to the high water table). They are actually quite beautiful and interesting to see. In fact, New Orleans is one of the best East Coast vacation destinations for foodies and jazz fans!

If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Royal Sonesta is a nice hotel in a prime location. Pro tip: if you pick a room on the Bourbon Street side, you’ll have some fun views, but it will be LOUD at night. (They provide earplugs, but just an FYI. Bourbon Street is crazy until the sunrises!) Another great option is to stay at one of the many awesome Airbnbs in New Orleans .

Where to eat:

· Café Du Monde – for the best beignets!

· Brennan’s – for a fine dining experience with some yummy Creole dishes on the menu. Be sure to also try the Bananas Foster.

Chicago is a city that fantastically blends old and new, modern and historic – an absolute must-see city on your East Coast travel. It is the home of so much incredible art deco architecture, contemporary sculpture and design and many exciting East Coast attractions such as hidden-away jazz and blues bars that come alive in the dark of night.

A three day stay in Chicago is enough to just scratch the surface, but it would easily be possible to spend longer here. Staying around the Magnificent Mile is an excellent idea because you’re mostly walking distance to downtown and attractions like Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverwalk.

In winter, Chicago can be bitterly cold, but so rewarding. Lake Michigan freezes over and looks utterly magical from up close at Oak Street Beach. In summer months, the same spot transforms from a winter wonderland into a lovely small swimming beach with fantastic city views.

Millennium Park is a huge drawcard to Chicago, and most visitors will be familiar with the bean-shaped reflective Cloudgate sculpture that has become synonymous with the city. But Millennium Park has much more to offer including a winter ice-skating rink and an installation called the Crown Fountain which features faces of Chicago residents projected on two pillars at opposite ends of a reflecting pool.

The food of Chicago is also a huge drawcard. Visitors absolutely cannot leave the city without trying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza or a Chicago-style hotdog from the iconic hot dog restaurant Portillo’s.

There is no one perfect time to visit Acadia, but if you are going to visit, their summer boasts the best weather and the highest temperatures (as well as the highest number of visitors).

As one of the oldest National Parks, Acadia preserves some of the most rugged coastline of the North Atlantic United States. Named for the early French settlers to the area, the Acadian wilderness boats beautiful hills, forests, and seas teeming with wildlife (particularly the lobster that the state is famous for).

Among some of the highlights to Acadia is some of the best hiking in the northeast and getting to see the first rays of light in the US from the peak of Cadillac Mountain.

No park in the northeast compares to Acadia’s size and diversity, and it’s the only park designated as a “National Park” in this region of the United States.

If you do visit, be sure to check out some of the popular hikes such as the precipice and beehive trails, although they are maybe tough for those afraid of heights and exposed cliffs.

There are great trails along the water and among the hills around Jordan Pond for some more relaxing hikes. For those with more time, a visit to Schoodic Peninsula and Isle Au Haut, which are beautiful and fare less touristed than the park’s main areas.

Sanibel Island

If your dream US destination includes a secluded tropical island and beautiful beaches, Sanibel Island may be just what you’re looking for. Tucked away just off Ft. Myers on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sanibel is a small barrier island, separated by a tiny inlet from its sister island of Captiva just next door.

These islands are a world away from the bustling nearby cities of Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples, and offer one of the best getaways in the US for a relaxed family gathering or romantic escape.

There’s plenty to enjoy on Sanibel if you love world-class shopping and dining. But it’s the quieter more natural attractions that draw most visitors — like cycling along quiet bike paths that run the entire length of the island or kayaking the JN “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. Visiting the Sanibel lighthouse at sunset is also a highlight of any visit.

But your best memories will be wading in the gentle sea and combing the beaches for the amazing seashells that wash upon the shores. The weather in southwest Florida is mild year-round, which makes for good swimming in the Gulf of Mexico from March through November. And doing the Sanibel Stoop in search of the little gifts from the sea is one of the best ways to enjoy this Florida gem!

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Are you looking to visit the most beautiful destination in the USA? Hands down, the place is Mackinac Island, Michigan. Located between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state, this magical island is just about eight miles around and requires a ferry to get there.

But wait, there’s more! The real impressive part of this island is that no cars are allowed on the island. Everything is done by foot, bike or horse and carriage. It is like stepping back in time. This is a top travel bucket list destination in the Midwest but is increasing in visibility around the world.

Some of the must-do activities on the island are: a carriage tour to get the full overview of history and layout of the land, afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, a rum runner form the Pink Pony, definitely walk around and taste fudge from all the shops – the island is known for its famous fudge, watch a sunrise on the lawn of Mission Point Resort and sunset from the West Bluff or the porch of the Grand Hotel, rent a bike and ride the outskirts of the island, visit Arch Rock, eat fancy for an evening at The Woods Restaurant, and if you are there during the Lilac Festival, take it all in.

Popular dishes on the island include white fish anything (dip, sandwiches, spreads, etc.) and the pecan ball served at Grand Hotel restaurants.

If you are looking for an iconic hotel to stay in on the island, the Island House is perfectly situated just past the bustling Main Street and overlooks Lake Huron and the boats in the harbour.

Nantucket is a charming island which lies 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Along with Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket has a well-earned reputation as an idyllic summer vacation destination.

Nantucket is easily accessible from the mainland and Martha’s Vineyard by ferry or plane. Thanks to the need to organise a flight or a ferry, the summer crowds on Nantucket are much less than on mainland Cape Cod. There are only about 10,000 year-round residents, and the population increases to about 50,000 in the summer months.

Nantucket is a small and fairly flat island which is easy to explore by foot or by cycle. There are two towns on the island with a long and narrow shape (approximately 15 miles long by 3 miles wide). It’s perfect for people who love the outdoors with hiking, cycling and water activities, such as kayaking and surfing. It’s easy to rent bicycles as well as water sports equipment. There are about 30 public beaches to explore as well.

Historically, Nantucket was influential in the whale trade, which made the island very wealthy. Nowadays, there is a whaling museum and three lighthouses that attest to its maritime importance. Today, the island’s wealth is mainly derived from tourism to a well-heeled crowd.

There are luxury hotels and charming B&B’s for accommodation as well as plenty of boutique shops and restaurants. The vibe is preppy chic.

Located in a historic Greek Revival building, we like the Periwinkle Inn B&B which has a great location in town within walking distance of many activities. Created from a former lifesaving station, the HI Nantucket Hostel is also renowned for being very nice with a great location.

With their long histories, excellent food, distinct cultures, and often whimsical (to put it nicely) layouts, the most beautiful East Coast cities easily rank among the best weekend getaway destinations in the USA!

From the beaches of Miami to the lighthouses of New England, there is no shortage of variety when looking for unique East Coast weekend getaways, and we adore them all.

While covering everywhere worth visiting on the US East Coast is a project for a lifetime (we’re constantly adding places to our wish list!), when it comes to cities on the East Coast to visit, there are some that consistently rank among the best.

For this guide, we’ve focused (with one exception), on East Coast cities with a population of over 100,000 people.

We love small American towns and beautiful beaches as much as the next road trippers, but we’ll save those for another post.

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit on the East Coast.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible things to do in Boston .

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite East Coast weekend destinations.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on a whale-watching cruise .

When it comes to neighborhoods, make sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Where to Stay in Boston

Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

No, not Portland, Oregon –the lighthouse-and-lobster loving Portland, Maine!

Known for its charming Portland Head Light, its warehouse-district-turned-trendy-neighborhood of Old Port, and many, many breweries, Portland is an absolute blast to visit.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this weekend getaway on the East Coast, you absolutely can.

How much of New York can you see on just a quick weekend trip?

Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately!

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you can find something to captivate you.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits, a weekend in New York is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
The Renwick: Offering stylish residential-style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high-class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been one of the best East Coast cities to visit for centuries, and–like Boston–it features strong ties to the American Revolution.

This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution were signed, touring Independence Hall and visiting the nearby Liberty Bell are among the best things to do in Philadelphia today as a result!

You can’t miss Philly’s food scene when visiting, either–from whoopie pies to Philly cheesesteaks, the city has a (literal) flavor all its own.

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!
Home2Suites By Hilton : The Home2Suites concept of combining the appeal of a hotel and an Airbnb into one property was excellent (our spacious room had a kitchenette), and the customer service is great.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Where to Stay in Baltimore

The Inn at Henderson’s Wharf : Housed in a warehouse-turned-charming-hotel, you can find the popular Inn at Henderson’s Wharf at the end of a delightful cobblestone street in Fells Point.
Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore : Housed in the former B&O Railroad Headquarters, walking into the opulent lobby of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore feels like stepping back in time–and the rooms are incredibly comfortable, too

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Have enough time for a quick day trip ?

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

Where to Stay in Savannah

The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely perfect. Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

The Jasmine House : This stunning boutique inn is housed in a Greek Revivalist home dating to 1843, and decorated to the nines! This is exactly the kind of property visitors dream about planning a trip to The Holy City, and the impeccable reviews and fantastic location make The Jasmine House the perfect place to stay when in Charleston.
Harbourview Inn : For charming luxury in the heart of historic Charleston, check into the gorgeous Harbourview Inn, located just steps away from Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park. The inn features excellent views from its rooftop, a phenomenal included breakfast, and excellent reviews.

Of all of the weekend getaways on the East Coast covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

There are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville (many of them featuring waterfalls) that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting!

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States , Blue Ridge Parkway is a drive not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Sprawling, historic, interesting, and full of delicious southern food, Atlanta makes a fantastic weekend getaway on the East Coast USA.

The city’s museums are worthy of a large swath of your time, with many of them centered around Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 Olympics were held).

In the immediate area, you can find the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (an absolute must-see when visiting Atlanta), the Georgia Aquarium, and the famous World of Coca-Cola.

Of course, no visit to Atlanta would be complete without time spent at the Martin Luther King Historical Park, which is home to several sites important to the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement overall.

Other interesting places to visit during a weekend in Atlanta include the BeltLine, Ponce City Market (for excellent food), and the Atlanta History Center.

Atlanta–and Georgia overall–are hotspots for filming movies and TV shows ranging from The Walking Dead to Stranger Things.

Without a doubt, Orlando is not only one of the most popular East Coast cities to visit but one of the most popular weekend getaways in the entire USA, and that’s for one important reason: theme parks!

From Walt Disney World to Universal, Orlando’s world-class theme parks are an enormous draw for kids and adults alike, and they alone are a reason to visit Central Florida!

Whether you want to ride the classic Disney rides at Magic Kingdom, step into Hogwarts in Harry Potter World, or ride soaring roller coasters, you’ll have a blast.

Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs was a favorite activity of mine as a kid and is a great way to experience a beautiful Florida spring without going far.

The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour away from downtown Orlando, and an incredible experience.

The Delaney Hotel : For a stay in Downtown Orlando this is the best pick for your hotel. Rooms are clean and classic and the hotel is a short walk to Church Street Station.
Caribe Royale : If you are looking for a resort close to Disney, this is the one. There is a fabulous pool and poolside bar, and a shuttle service to the Disney ticket office.

The East Coast includes all the coastal states that have shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The East Coast region of the USA also includes Vermont, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia even though they do not have coastal access to the Atlantic.

Drive the South Carolina portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Highlights in South Carolina include: The Blowing Rock (a formation with sweeping views of peaks, forests and the Johns River Gorge), Linn Cove Viaduct (a 1,243-foot long bridge made of segmented concrete that hugs the face of Grandfather Mountain and one of the most photographed sections of the parkway) and Linville Falls, North Carolina’s most photographed waterfall.

South Carolina Bucket List

Visit the charming city of Charleston.
Visit Myrtle Beach, a vacation resort known for golf and a beach with a boardwalk and music variety shows.
Visit Hilton Head Island , offering 12 miles of pristine beaches and several golf courses. If you visit between May and October, you can see the sea turtles that visit the beaches to lay their nests. There is a ferry service from Savannah, Georgia .

There are so many incredible places to visit on the east coast USA during a road trip.

As part of our three-month American road trip, we traveled down the east coast of the USA and came across so many places I’d never heard of before.

Though I’d been on a family road trip in New England , many places on the east coast were unfamiliar to me.

Being British, we hear about East Coast cities like New York and Boston, and we know about Florida, but the bit in the middle is largely unknown to us.

Little did I realize that the true magic resided in the hidden gems scattered along the 1000+ mile stretch in between these popular places on the east coast.

As we continued down the east coast, I was pleasantly surprised to discover so many beautiful towns, cities, and gorgeous beaches, each offering something unique. These lesser-known spots proved to be the real highlights of our American road trip and are some of the best unique things to do on the east coast.

While many USA road trip routes bypass the heart of America’s East Coast, that should not deter you from checking them out. West Coast USA road trips are popular with nature lovers, but the East Coast shouldn’t be neglected either.

This blog post covers some of the best places to visit on the east coast of the USA. From cities and destinations, you’ll have heard of, to some you won’t have.

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire

If you’re in need of a quiet getaway, pack your bags for Lake Winnipesaukee.

This beautiful lake in the state of New Hampshire is the largest lake in the state. It’s surrounded by stunning views, making it an ideal place to visit on an east coast vacation.

This place is a watersports paradise in the summer. You can sail across the calm waters, delve into fun activities like kayaking, swimming, or jet skiing, or simply relax by the lakeside and enjoy the serene ambiance.

Surrounding the lake are majestic mountains, offering plenty of opportunities for scenic drives and hiking, with trails suitable for all fitness levels.

The autumn season here is particularly special too as the trees change color to form a stunning sight of red, orange, and yellow.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires in Western Massachusetts is a cabin lover’s paradise and another east coast gem that nature lovers shouldn’t miss.

The area is particularly stunning during the fall foliage season when the mountains and forests stay alive with vibrant colors.

The summer season is great too since you can enjoy some incredible hikes, go kayaking on the Housatonic River or enjoy the local food and drink scene. There are lots of farms and places to enjoy fresh, farm-to-table meals. My favorite!

Rainy day? No problem! There are plenty of indoor activities to keep you engaged. Some of the top museums in the region are the Norman Rockwell Museum, featuring works of the iconic American artist; Mass MoCa, an avant-garde art museum; and Hancock Shaker Village, providing insights into Shaker lifestyle and culture.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is my parents’ favorite city on the east coast and has both plenty of history as well as a great food and drink scene and ‘cool’ things to do.

Historical sites like the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile long path passing 16 significant sites; Faneuil Hall, the “Cradle of Liberty”; and Beacon Hill, with its quaint cobblestone streets and Federal-style rowhouses, are glimpses into the city’s past.

Check out Newbury Street, renowned for its shops and eateries; the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a green urban oasis; and Boston Harborwalk which has stunning views of the city’s waterfront on your east coast vacations too.

Indulge in Boston’s culinary scene, relishing fresh seafood or trying out multicultural dishes, and don’t forget to sample the decadent desserts!

The city’s lush parks like Boston Public Garden and Boston Common are perfect for leisurely walks too.

Salem, Massachusetts

Salem to the north of Boston, is a unique place to visit on America’s east coast. Shrouded in American history it’s a fascinating destination (especially around Halloween!).

Salem is famous for its 17th-century witch trials, a dark chapter in history that you can explore through sites like the Witch Trial Memorial and the Old Burying Point Cemetery. The Witch Museum offers an immersive insight into this historical event.

For lighter entertainment, take on a journey aboard the Fame Schooner, or spend a day at Salem Willows Park, featuring arcade games, kiddie rides, and gorgeous seaside views. And for beer enthusiasts, don’t miss out on Salem Beer Works, a microbrewery with a rotating selection of handcrafted beers.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is a hook-shaped peninsula in Massachusetts where you can enjoy cute fishing villages, gorgeous beaches and enjoy watching (or going) sailing!

Cape Cod is best visited in the summer and some of the best things to do there are to drive along the Old King’s Highway. On this route, you’ll find loads of seaside towns and miles of sandy beaches. Or, visit Provincetown for its vibrant art scene, or escape to Chatham for a tranquil retreat.

When it comes to places to go in the east coast, nearby islands, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket are just a ferry ride away, and also worth visiting.

The Cape is also a gastronomical delight, with local seafood being a must-try.

Booking a sightseeing tour to see the whales in this area is well worth doing. We did this on a family trip and saw SO many!

And while summer is the high season, visiting Cape Cod in the winter gives you a chance to see its stunning, snowy landscapes, providing a unique beauty all its own.

Portland, Maine

Portland in Maine, (not the Portland in Oregon !) is a coastal town that combines the old and the new beautifully.

The Old Port district boasts 19th-century brick buildings, cobblestone streets, quaint craft shops, and bookstores that give a sense of stepping back in time. For art aficionados, the Portland Museum of Art hosts renowned exhibitions and houses impressive permanent collections.

One of the main places to visit in Portland Maine is the Portland Head Light, the oldest operational lighthouse in the U.S. Seafood lovers should not miss trying out local lobster delicacies at restaurants like Eventide Oyster.

For outdoor lovers, the city offers beautiful parks, boat tours, and opportunities for whale watching.

New Haven, Connecticut

If you’re looking for a mix of academic life and coastal vibes, New Haven in Connecticut is a destination to consider.

As the heart of Connecticut’s culture and home to Yale University, this city effortlessly combines the grand educational establishment of Yale and its rich history with a relaxed beachfront vibe.

Check out the iconic Omni Mount Washington Resort, and take advantage of the local attractions such as horseback rides, moose safaris, and river tubing. For the more adventurous, conquer challenging mountain climbs, including the famous Mount Washington!

Ithaca, New York

Ithaca may not be as well-known as other east coast destinations, but it’s a cool little town with a lot to offer.

Home to Cornell University, this town is enriched with academia and nestled in scenic beauty, featuring stunning waterfalls and gorges.

For things to do in Ithaca , check out the Ithaca Gorge and take a hike on the Cascadilla Gorge Trail.

New York City, New York

There’s a reason why New York City is on everyone’s USA bucket list . It’s a city that offers a bit of everything, from diverse international cuisine to high-end shopping, street art, spacious parks, and iconic landmarks.

Whether you have 48 hours in New York City or a bit longer, be sure to check out the towering Statue of Liberty, the artistic riches of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the awe-inspiring Empire State Building, or the historic Brooklyn Bridge, NYC has something for everyone.

Take a stroll in Central Park or along the High Line with a coffee from a great New York City cafe or catch a Broadway show to complete your NYC adventure.

Though often expensive, you can find budget hotels in New York if you know where to look.

Finger Lakes, New York

A haven of nature and vineyards, Finger Lakes in New York is an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle.

Characterized by its finger-shaped lakes, the region boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery on the east coast.

Watkins Glen State Park is a must-visit for its awe-inspiring gorges and after a day of hiking, unwind with a glass of wine at Seneca Lake.

With 11 lakes in total, you’ll need a week or more to explore this area properly!

Though it was the middle of winter during our visit, the lakes were still impressive even when covered in snow. However, it’s definitely summer that is the best time to visit the Finger Lakes in New York State.

Adirondack Mountains, New York

For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, the Adirondack Mountains in New York are a must visit.

You can hike, fish, and boat in the summer, or ski during winter.

If the weather is harsh, head inside and visit places like the Wild Center natural history museum, and the Olympic Training Center, or shop in small-town boutiques and galleries.

The Hamptons, New York

For a stylish getaway, there’s no place quite like the Hamptons. This upscale locale on the eastern end of Long Island offers charming seaside villages, excellent eateries, a stunning coastline, and beautiful beaches.

Visit East Hampton and Montauk, relax at Cooper’s Beach, and take a walk in the Hither Hills.

When it comes to what to do in The Hamptons, lounge on the beach, golf, or shop in the summer; enjoy the fall foliage and wine tours in autumn; and experience a festive holiday wonderland in winter.

The Hamptons offer a luxurious escape in every season, just make sure you’re prepared for the price tag!

Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls in Upstate New York is an awe-inspiring sight that you shouldn’t miss. With the highest water flow rate in North America, the power and majesty of these three falls will leave you speechless.

When you’re there, you can feel the might of nature in the thunderous roar and refreshing mist. Taking a Maid of the Mist boat tour from the Canadian side (arguably the best side to visit the falls), is a must-do in summer. Wearing a blue poncho, you’ll get to see the American Falls and Canada’s Horseshoe Falls up close.

Beyond the falls, explore Buffalo, an underappreciated city in Western New York with its own top attractions such as buffalo wings which you simply have to try in Buffalo!

Lake Placid, New York

Imagine relaxing by a lake, surrounded by the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York. Well, you can do just that at Lake Placid in New York State.

During the summer, the area offers hiking, waterskiing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking.

Then, in the winter you have the chance to try winter sports like skiing and bobsledding, thanks to its history as a two-time Winter Olympics host. The lake itself, Mirror Lake, becomes a natural ice rink in the winter, providing more fun outdoor activities.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park is a paradise in Virginia with so many beautiful viewpoints and places to see.

Expect to see sprawling wildflowers, rolling hills, stunning waterfalls, and green forests, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like deer, bears, and bobcats.

There are two visitor centers, Dickey Ridge and Harry F. Byrd, where you can gather information and maps so you can pick out where you want to explore the most.

With 200,000 acres to explore, there’s plenty of space for everyone. The park offers over 400 miles of trails for hiking, catering to all skill levels.

Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia

Blackwater Falls State Park, in West Virginia, is a perfect choice for people looking for an East Coast destination where you can get out into nature.

The park is named after the stunning Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade that’s a dream for photographers.

You can also visit Elaka Falls, Pendleton Point Overlook, and Lindy Point.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe in Vermont offers visitors a chance to experience some of Austria in this New England town in America.

There’s the cool Trapp Family Lodge founded by the Von Trapp family who fled Austria during WWII and you can indulge in farm-to-table dining, outdoor activities, and local beers. Visit the Alchemist Brewery for their IPAs and the Ben and Jerry’s Factory for ice cream and a factory tour.

Winter draws skiers from all over to enjoy the slopes at Mount Mansfield, while other seasons offer activities like mountain biking and hiking.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth most populous U.S. city.

The city is famously known as the birthplace of the United States, with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed.

Here, you can trace the footsteps of the nation’s founding fathers through the cobblestone streets and take a glimpse into the past.

Philly is not just about the past, though. It’s a lively city with a thriving arts scene. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, with its iconic “Rocky Steps”, houses a vast collection of works from all over the world.

For the foodies, the city offers a wide array of culinary delights. From the world-famous Philly cheesesteak to the Reading Terminal Market, where you can enjoy everything from Amish specialties to fresh seafood, Philadelphia will satisfy your tastebuds. And for the beer lovers, there’s a thriving craft brewing scene you’ll want to try to wash down all that food.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

The Poconos in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania is a pretty part of this state where you’ll find mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers. In fact, there are over 150 lakes!

Covering more than 2,400 square miles, the Poconos offers an array of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, and skiing in the winter season.

One of the main attractions in the Poconos is Bushkill Falls, often called the “Niagara of Pennsylvania”. This series of eight waterfalls, nestled deep in the woods, is a popular place to hike to.

If you’re a history enthusiast, take a step back in time and explore historic towns like Jim Thorpe, which offers old-world charm with its historic sites and architecture. Taking a scenic ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is another fun thing to do and you’ll be able to travel through the scenery on a vintage coach.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park is on Maine’s Mount Desert Island and is where you’ll find a stunning mix of sea and mountains. As the only national park in New England, it’s well worth a visit.

The park spans over 49,000 acres with a diverse range of landscapes, from rocky coastlines to granite peaks, and from dense woodlands to serene ponds.

Its highest point, Cadillac Mountain, is the first place to see the sunrise in the United States from October to early March, making it a popular spot for early morning hikes.

Acadia is also home to lots of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, moose, foxes, and over 330 species of birds, making it a fantastic spot for wildlife lovers.

This coastal town is famous for its grand Gilded Age mansions and it’s not too hard to imagine journeying back in time as you tour these opulent houses, once the summer homes of America’s wealthiest families.

Among the many mansions, three stand out – The Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff. Each one offers a unique look into the lavish lifestyle of a bygone era.

If you have enough time, take a day trip to Block Island, just off the coast of Newport which is well worth a visit.

Washington, D.C.

As the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. is full of history and culture.

This big city on the east coast mixes modernity and antiquity and is easily one of the best places to visit on the East Coast.

During the day, stroll through beautiful parks, marvel at monumental landmarks, and dive into knowledge at the city’s world-renowned museums. As the sun sets, experience D.C.’s lively nightlife, buzzing with an energy that’s uniquely its own.

Key sights include iconic structures like the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial, each with its own interesting history.

Make sure to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Air and Space Museum, and the National Gallery of Art for a cultural feast.

Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers a whopping 500,000+ acres and is one of the most visited national parks in the U.S.

The misty mountain peaks, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls make it one of the best places to visit on the East Coast, and indeed, the whole of the USA.

Regardless of the season, the park is worth a visit. Be it the vibrant green meadows in summer, the colors during fall, the snowy landscapes in winter, or the colorful flowers in bloom during the spring, the park’s beauty is year-round.

Don’t miss the stunning views from the top of Clingmans Dome, the misty Rainbow Falls, and a challenging climb up Mount Le Conte.

On the outskirts of this magnificent park lies Gatlinburg, an ideal base for exploring the Smokies, and nearby Pigeon Forge offers so many restaurants and entertainment venues, making it another great place to stay.

Nashville, Tennessee

Music lovers make a bee-line for the city of Nashville in Tennessee, fondly known as the Music Capital of the World.

This city is all about rhythm and melodies with a fun country music scene that will have you tapping your feet.

Visit the Grand Ole Opry for an unforgettable concert experience, and immerse yourself in the history of country music at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

But that’s not all Nashville has to offer. The city’s buzzing restaurant scene and trendy bars will keep the foodies and night owls entertained. And don’t miss out on seeing the Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the Greek architectural wonder, reflecting the city’s nickname as the ‘Athens of the South.’ It’s a pretty unexpected thing to see on the east coast!

Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches across Virginia and North Carolina, is one of the most beautiful drives you can take on the East Coast.

It bends along the full Blue Ridge mountain range, which spans 550 miles from Pennsylvania to Georgia, and is one of the best places to go on the east coast.

While driving along the Parkway, you’ll have access to over 200 scenic overlooks where you can enjoy mountain and forest views. You’ll soon see where the park’s name comes from with the distinctive blue haze on the mountains.

In addition to the scenic drive, you can go hiking or camping, and don’t forget the cultural and historical points of interest along the way, like the Mabry Mill, a restored gristmill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop, or the Museum of North Carolina Minerals.

The Outer Banks, North Carolina

North Carolina was my favorite state on our American east coast road trip. It was just so scenic! You’ve simply got to make it one of the places to visit in east coast USA.

If you’re after picturesque landscapes and a blend of history and nature, the Outer Banks in North Carolina should be on top of your travel list. Just off the coast, this 130-mile strip of barrier islands is a beautiful patchwork of charming towns and tranquil fishing villages making it the perfect east coast vacation spot.

One of the most iconic features of the Outer Banks is its numerous lighthouses. These towering structures, which you can climb in the summer months for a small fee, offer a panoramic view of the islands.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, one of the tallest brick lighthouses in North America, is particularly worth visiting. Some of these lighthouses will be closed during the off-season but you’ll still be able to view them from the outside.

Camping on the Outer Banks is a must for your east coast vacation. If you end up camping by the beach under the star-studded sky, with the sound of waves providing a soothing backdrop, you’ll have an unforgettable experience.

To get from island to island you’ll likely need to take a few ferries. These run throughout the year but remember to book in advance during the peak season to avoid long waits.

Ocracoke is one of the islands on the Outer Banks of North Carolina that is worth a separate mention on this list.

This quaint island town has a small lighthouse, clean beaches, and a super picturesque harbor. While you’re there, check out the Ocracoke Lighthouse, one of the oldest still in operation in the U.S. Although it’s not one you can climb, its historical significance and beauty make it a must-see.

The island is also known for its stunning beaches which are often less crowded than others in the Outer Banks, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the surf. If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins playing in the waves!

Ocracoke’s harbor area is a delight with a host of bars and restaurants serving up fresh seafood and local specialties. If you happen to visit on St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll find the town alive with celebrations.

It’s the sunsets in Ocracoke that I most remember. Be sure to head down to the harbor and soak one up!

Chesapeake Bay Tunnel-Bridge, Virginia

While it’s a more unique place to visit on the east coast, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia is an incredible feat of engineering that’s worth experiencing.

This unique structure is a blend of bridges and tunnels spanning about 18 miles and was built to accommodate both ship and car traffic without the need for a drawbridge.

As you travel along the bridge-tunnel, you’ll be surrounded by the beautiful bay waters and views and it’s pretty cool to see.

If you’re heading from north to south, there’s a viewing area at the southern end where you can stop and marvel at this architectural masterpiece.

Not only does it offer a great vantage point of the structure, but it’s also a good spot for a picnic or even a bit of fishing. This unique roadway isn’t just a way to get from A to B, it’s an adventure in itself.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park, North Carolina

Jockey’s Ridge State Park is a wonderful gem on the East Coast, right near Kitty Hawk where you’ll find the Wright Brothers Memorial which you should add to your trip.

It’s an ideal place to spend a full day exploring, and it doesn’t even cost a penny to enter!

You’ll find perfect spots for a picnic, so pack a meal to enjoy in the great outdoors at one of the most beautiful places on the east coast.

Stay all day until it closes at 8 pm, especially to witness a breathtaking sunset that will turn your visit into an unforgettable experience.

Assateague Island

Assateague Island is a 37-mile-long barrier island with diverse landscapes – from lush maritime forests and tranquil salt marshes to golden sandy beaches.

The main reason people love this area though is for the chance to see wild horses roaming along the shoreline. You’ll see them grazing on the waterfront in their natural habitat – a truly unforgettable sight.

You can wade into the Atlantic from the beach, or venture on the ‘Life of the Forest’ trail in Assateague State Park. For a truly unique experience, consider beach camping under the starry sky.

Asheville, North Carolina

For music lovers and artists, there’s no better place than Asheville (apart from maybe Nashville, depending on your music taste).

This city, the largest in North Carolina, exudes a unique, creative vibe and you’ll find eccentric shops and street art on every corner of its happening downtown area.

Asheville is also a hub for live music, with festivals showcasing a blend of classical, contemporary, and traditional sounds. Whether you’re into African-Caribbean music, Mozart’s works, or Southern Appalachian tunes, you’ll find a festival to your liking.

But Asheville isn’t just about music and arts. Visit the luxurious Biltmore Estate, a sprawling 8,000-acre property, where you can enjoy wine tasting, hiking, biking, and fine dining. It’s an Asheville experience that makes you feel like royalty!

South of the Border, South Carolina

This is something that could (and would) only really happen in America. The funny stores and amusements that have sprung up between these two states on the east coast USA are well worth stopping at.

The story goes that South of the Border (so named as it’s just south of the North Carolina/South Carolina border) started as a small gas station but, when the Interstate was built the owner took advantage of the increase in footfall and South of the Border grew into what it is today.

If you visit you’ll find hat shops (with some truly ridiculous hats that we very much enjoyed trying on), souvenirs, a giant statue of Pedro (the area’s mascot), a reptile center, restaurants, and more fireworks than you can imagine.

Sure, you could argue that it’s overrated as it’s basically a glorified service station. But personally, I think it’s well worth a visit as you travel down the Atlantic coast of America.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is a great place to visit that’s full of history, stunning architecture, and pristine beaches.

Here, you can marvel at antebellum mansions, wander along cobblestone streets, and explore cozy boutiques and eateries. Charleston’s history dates back to 1670, and you can dive into its past by visiting its numerous museums and landmarks.

If you’re a beach lover, Charleston will not disappoint. Popular spots like Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms offer ample opportunities for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

Foodies will also enjoy Charleston’s vibrant culinary scene, with an array of restaurants serving seafood, Southern comfort food, and locally-brewed beer such as Palmetto Brewing Co. and Holy City Brewing.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

We decided to take a trip to Jekyll Island which, although popular with US visitors, is pretty unknown to others.

Jekyll Island is, amongst other things, home to a turtle reserve which is well worth a visit. The Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Centre is packed full of information about the turtles; their lives and the dangers they face.

We even saw them operating on a couple of turtles who had had their shells damaged when hit by boats. Fortunately, our visit to Jekyll Island’s turtle center coincided with the turtles’ dinner time too.

The center uses a technique where staff throw food into the turtles’ tanks when the turtles are looking the opposite way. This way, they say, the turtles are less likely to associate humans with food (as they don’t seem the humans throw it) and maintain their ability to hunt.

Also on Jekyll Island is Driftwood Beach. This beach has often been voted as one of America’s most romantic beaches and it’s definitely one of the best beaches on the east coast USA and a cool idea for east coast vacation spots for couples.

The driftwood looks almost alien and the beach is spectacular at sunrise. I’d highly recommend adding Jekyll ISland to your USA east coast tour plans.

Orlando, Florida

The city of Orlando in Florida is synonymous with fun, adventure, and, of course, theme parks which are some of the best east coast attractions.

A great place to visit on the east coast for families with children, Orlando is a city that breathes magic into the young and old alike.

Iconic theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld guarantee endless excitement with their unique attractions, thrilling rides, and immersive experiences.

If you’re looking for the best vacation spots on the east coast you can’t go too wrong with Orlando.

Another attraction not too far from Orlando is the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, a must-visit spot for science and space enthusiasts.

A trip to the East Coast would be incomplete without a visit to Miami Beach; one of the best vacations on the east coast

The miles-long stretch of beautiful beachfront is lined with Art Deco buildings, upscale beach clubs, and fine-dining restaurants with something for everyone. It’s South Beach which is arguably the best part of Miami Beach.

South Beach is home to Ocean Drive, a hotspot for nightlife and the heart of Miami’s Art Deco district.

Apart from sunbathing on the pristine beach, you can enjoy a leisurely walk, admiring the beautiful villas and mansions dotting the area.

Beyond the beach, Miami is a melting pot of cultures. More than 70% of Miami’s population speaks Spanish, so brushing up on your Spanish phrases might come in handy. You can also visit Cuba where you’ll find delicious food and feel immersed in another culture.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale in Florida offers a perfect balance between the vibrancy of Miami and the tranquillity of a seaside town.

While some consider it an offshoot of Miami, Fort Lauderdale stands on its own with a distinct identity and a relaxed atmosphere. The city’s beaches are less crowded but just as beautiful and offer a peaceful setting for relaxing and sunbathing.

The more relaxed vibes when compared to Miami make it a great as options for east coast vacation spots for families.

Alexander Springs, Florida

We stumbled across this by accident. I was tired of sleeping in Walmart Carparks and used iOverlander to find some wild camping.

We ended up staying in the Ocala National Forest and spent the following morning at Alexander Springs.

This was the clearest water I’ve seen in a long time. There were turtles (and probably some alligators) and plenty of scuba divers who dove down to where (I think) the spring began.

Pack lunch, sun cream, and your swimming stuff, and get there early to secure a good spot at one of the best places to visit on the east coast of the USA.

Ichetucknee Springs, Florida

I’d read about Ichetucknee Springs and was determined to visit while in Florida. Sometimes you can see manatees while you float down the river. We didn’t, but it’s still worth a visit on your American east coast road trip.

The thing to do here is rent a tube (rubber ring) and float down the river. We rented from Ichetucknee Tube Centre ; the original place although there are now a few others renting tubes. The cheapest tubes they had were just $5 for the whole day but fancier options are available.

From there, the owner (a woman who appears to have lived there her whole life and will willingly share the history of the place with you), will help you tie your tube to the car and give you directions on how to get to the starting point.

The river is shaded so you’re not in direct sunlight (something we were very glad about given it was 34 degrees when we did this!). You’ll spot turtles, fish, plenty of birds, and manatees if you’re lucky!

All this for just $11 a day – less if you’re splitting the park entrance fee ($6) with someone else! It’s got to be one of the best stops if you’re touring east coast USA and looking for places to visit in Florida!

Everglades National Park, Florida

Just a short drive from Miami the Everglades National Park offers a unique ecosystem teeming with wildlife.

Spanning across 1.5 million acres, the park is so much fun to explore — just don’t go in the water!

As you explore the park you’ll find wetlands and mangrove forests, freshwater marshes, and coastal prairies.

We did a self-guide trip in the Everglades (linked above) and saw so many alligators, birds, and more chilling in the water. I personally think it’s way better than the tourist attractions like ‘reserves’ and boats. I’d also highly recommend these kayaking tours of the Everglades.

Key West and the Florida Keys

Key West at the bottom of the Florida Keys Scenic Drive is a beautiful place where you can enjoy fresh seafood, admire art, and soak up the island life.

One of the key highlights of Key West is the daily sunset celebration at Mallory Square. People from all over the island gather here to witness the stunning display of colors as the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico.

Hot Springs, North Carolina

As its name suggests, this small town is all about the area's natural hot springs. Hands down my favorite place to visit on the East Coast is Southwest Florida – specifically Naples, Florida.

This area is such a hidden gem, perfect for your family vacation. First of all, Naples is very far south, and warm enough for beach and pool activities at least 10 months a year.

Speaking of beaches, the Gulf Coast of Florida has the best beaches with warm, calm water that will rival anything you will find in the Caribbean. When you finish at the beach, there is still so much to do! A beautiful botanical garden, an interesting zoo, a local water park called Sun n Fun Lagoon, shopping (outlets and high-end boutiques), or if you like golf (both regular and mini) you will find all these activities here!

If your family likes to eat, Naples has so many waterfront places to dine and an overall incredible food scene.

Don’t forget to plan one night to take a picnic on the beach to see the most beautiful overwater sunset!

Disney World is unarguably the most famous place to visit on the East Coast.

It consists of two water parks, four theme parks, tons of dining options, and Disney Springs, a center with more dining and shopping.

Disney World has over two dozen resorts from which to choose. Our favorite is Animal Kingdom Lodge , an African-themed resort with live animals, including giraffes and zebras.

We enjoy everything Disney World has to offer, but the majority of the highlights are found at the theme parks, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Magic Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom features a Pandora-themed section, live animals, rides, and themes inspired by Africa and Asia .

Epcot has a World Showcase with sections devoted to eleven different countries, interactive exhibits, and a massive aquarium.

Rides include Test Track, a ride that ends with a race around a track at sixty-five miles per hour, and Soarin’ Around the World, a ride that simulates flying over landmarks throughout the world.

Hollywood Studios has lands featuring Toy Story and Star Wars with new rides to match.

Magic Kingdom has a lot of family-friendly rides with no height requirement.

There are also a few larger rides, like Space Mountain, an indoor, space-themed roller coaster, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a roller coaster with animatronics from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Near the memorial is Jockey Ridge State Park which has big sand dunes and a place to fly kites. You will see kites of different sizes and colors covering the sky.

The 200-mile coastline boasts of some beautiful and historic lighthouses – Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and Ocracoke Lighthouse. Adventure seekers need not fret. Get your dose of thrill by driving an AWD on the beaches of Corolla or Cape Hatteras.

Just a half-hour drive away from the coast and Virginia Beach, the city is filled with historic sites and fun family activities.

Colonial Williamsburg, recognized as the largest living history museum in the United States, is the city’s centerpiece.

Revel in the colonial city’s history and culture, as authentic reenactors spend their day in the 18th-century town.

As you explore the grounds, you will visit several of the structures that were established when Williamsburg was a major Colonial South city.

And if you have any college-aged kids along, walk around the next-door campus of the second-oldest collegiate institution in the United States, the College of William & Mary.

If you want to be fully immersed in history, there are several hotels in and around Colonial Williamsburg .

Aside from its significant colonial past, there are several other experiences you need to add to your family’s Williamsburg itinerary .

There are three major amusement parks in the area – Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Water Country USA, and the Great Wolf Lodge.

Have an adventurous day out with your kids by checking out at least one, if not two, of these parks on the same day.

Water Country is especially great to add to your trip to Busch Gardens in the summertime, and the town is less than an hour away from Virginia Beach, which promises a boardwalk, an aquarium, and a stunning coastline for your family to enjoy.

If you’re looking for a city where you can experience amazing food, outdoor adventures, history, street art, and lots of watersports then Virginia Beach is worth considering for a family vacation.

This beachside city is perfect if you’re looking for a weekend getaway or a longer stay. Summertime is very busy, but it’s a great year-round destination for families with kids of all ages.

For families with younger kids, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Center is the perfect way to spend an entire day.

The aquarium boasts of having over 800,000 gallons and is one of the best in the country.

Older kids would enjoy more adventurous activities such as indoor skydiving, exploring thousands of acres of state parks, or climbing the stairs inside the Cape Henry Lighthouse for some spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you’re lucky you can see pods of dolphins playing just off the coast or an aircraft carrier heading out to sea.

There are lots of hotels in Virginia Beach but the best ones can be found along the 3 miles-long Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

Portland, Maine, is one of the most picturesque coastal cities in Maine. It is home to several stunning lighthouses, including Portland Head Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses on the east coast.

In the past few years, Portland has turned into a foodie’s paradise, with many upscale restaurants popping up each year. There are also many bars where you can grab a cocktail.

If you’re looking to do some shopping, head to the Old Port to stroll on the old cobblestone streets and poke into the boutiques. If you want to try a unique Maine treat, head to The Holy Donut to taste their delicious donuts made from potatoes.

While you’re in Portland, make sure to have an iconic lobster roll, preferably eaten outside on a waterfront. My favorite place to stay while in Portland is the Press Hotel.

Maine, a beautiful state, is truly a photographer’s dream and a complete gem in the state is the Acadia National Park.

The park is one of the most visited National parks on the East Coast. Why not?

Who would want to miss a diverse landscape with rocky coastline, abundant greenery, iconic lighthouses, incredible hikes, and magical sunrise and sunsets, what more can you ask for?

A trip across this 47,000-acre wide area by the Atlantic Coast will leave you mesmerized.

The best way to explore the beauty is to drive the 27-mile Park Loop Road beginning near the Hulls Cove Visitor Center.

The road traverses through diverse terrain and multiple scenic spots like Thunder Hole, Sand Beach, Otter Cliff, Jordon Pond, and many more along the loop with parking spaces to pull off.

Most of the Park Loop Road is one-way traffic with detours to places like Cadillac Mountain and Jordon Pond. Don’t forget to eat at the Jordon House Restaurant with mesmerizing views of the pond and mountains.

And if you are up for magic, then head up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain at dawn and watch the sun rising above the horizon and the sky getting painted.

There are campgrounds to stay inside the park, but they get booked very fast.

16. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia or colloquially Philly is the ‘City of Brotherly Love’.

Founded in 1682, this city has a rich history and culture. This is the place where America’s fight for independence began and the constitution was written. Philadelphia will keep you entertained and intrigued. There is so much for everyone be it history lovers, nature lovers, food lovers, and of course the kids.

Most of the attractions are best explored on foot or by taking a historic tour. The iconic Liberty Bell and National Constitution Center is a must-visit to shed light on the Independence struggle of America.

Another place is the Betsy Ross House where the first American national flag was designed and sewn. Philly has some beautiful buildings and one of them is the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This is a must-visit for art lovers.

Take the trolley tour! It will allow your family to easily hop off or hop on at various points of interest around Savannah while learning fascinating historical tidbits about this nearly 300-year-old city.

A couple of the more famous family-friendly stops include River Street (for dining, shopping, and river views) and Forsyth Park.

Additionally, there are several kid-friendly museums around town like the Georgia Railroad Museum, Jepson Center for the Arts ArtZeum, and the Savannah Children’s Museum.

Other nearby fun stops include Fort Pulaski and the Tybee Island Marine Center.

Families who love learning about history will absolutely enjoy a visit to Boston, Massachusetts.

Within the annals of American history, the city of Boston plays a prominent role. The city was the setting of one of America’s most famous rebellious acts, The Boston Tea Party.

It was also the starting place of the American Revolutionary War. For kids, Boston is a great place to learn about American history in an interactive way.

One of the most popular things to do in Boston is walking the Freedom Trail with kids .

The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile trail around Boston that links up many of the city’s historical landmarks. Families can visit historic homes like Paul Revere’s House, or walk through Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which first opened in 1743.

For families who prefer more modern sites, they can visit the Franklin Park Zoo, a 72-acre zoo that is home to almost 100 types of animals! The Boston Museum of Science is also a hit among families.

The best time to visit Boston is between the months of August and October. Although the summers can get pretty sweltering, the fall weather is fairly mild, which makes walking around the city rather enjoyable.

One of the absolute best places to visit on the West Coast is Nantucket Island, the old whaling island, that now is more famous for its many lighthouses and stunning sand-blown beaches.

As one of the best weekend getaways from Boston or New York, with a whole heap of old, charming cottages, the island has a lot of history to show for it. Make sure you visit the museums, especially the Nantucket Whaling Museum, Museum of African American History, and Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum.

Downtown has so much charm and is perfect for sipping lattes and window shopping. In Siasconset you can see some of the oldest houses on Nantucket.

But you can also enjoy the long golden beach or walk the breathtakingly beautiful Sconset Bluff Walk all the way to Sankaty Head Lighthouse. If you have the possibility, try to get there by sunset as it is pure magic with the lighthouse.

A great way to see the island for the whole family is to rent bikes. Nantucket has a great network of bike paths and is mostly a safe biking destination. You can explore the beach at Surfside or the forest trails at Millbrook.

If you are lucky you might even see deer or other wildlife in the forest. There are short and long hiking trails which are all easy to walk as there are no hills.

A great family-friendly place to stay is Nantucket Periwinkle as they have a nice outdoor space and family rooms.

These all look great! I explored a small part of the East Coast about a decade ago, but there’s still so much more to see, and you have just added more to my list. I absolutely loved Washington D.C. when I was there and would love to go back to Boston. The US is so big and there’s so much to see!

Sag harbor is seriously the absolute cutest place in the Hamptons and must visit around NY. I am yet to visit Savannah and North Carolina – after reading this I hope I get to visit Charleston soon (had never considered it to be an east coast gem before today). Relax On Miles Of Uncrowded Beaches At This Little-Known State Park On The East Coast

In the summertime, beach spots on both coasts and areas around the Great Lakes come alive with tourists. For many, these beach getaways are a slice of paradise. However, finding a place to relax on miles of uncrowded beaches can be difficult. Fortunately, with a little bit of homework, you'll find destinations like Delaware's Fenwick Island State Park. The little-known state park provides plenty of outdoor fun alongside a picturesque East Coast beach town .

Delaware may be overlooked as a tourist destination, but it has a lot to offer. It's sandwiched between popular destinations like the New Jersey Shore to the north and Virginia through the Carolinas to the south. But to find a quiet beach, it's worth avoiding popular spots like Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, and Atlantic City.

Not only will visitors find ample watersport opportunities at Fenwick Island State Park, but they will also be able to enjoy history-rich activities, including visiting a WWII-era fire tower that still stands today. All these fun activities and more make this state park a great destination.

What to see and do while visiting Fenwick Island State Park

The first thing most visitors to Fenwick Island State Park do is pull up a beach chair and relax — the 3 miles of white sand beaches are the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy the sound of crashing waves. In addition to enjoying the beach's solitude, the area is a popular destination for kayaking, especially in Little Assawoman Bay, which is on the west side of the park.

Kayaks and standup paddleboards are available to rent for those looking to explore the area. Additionally, the beach on the ocean side of the park is a great spot for swimming and surfing. Similar to many eastern states on the Atlantic Ocean, the waves here may not be massive, but any occasional swell is celebrated by local surfers and visitors alike.

Besides the usual seabirds and shell hunting that people enjoy with a visit to a beach, there is also a unique creature visitors can search for at Fenwick Island State Park: ghost crabs. These small land crabs can be seen going in and out of holes that dot the beach.

Despite being a state park, one thing you won't find are campsites. Unfortunately, there aren't any campgrounds in Fenwick Island State Park, but if you are focused on camping, you can head just 7 miles north to Delaware Seashore State Park, where you can camp right next to the ocean.

If you prefer a comfy bed, visitors can find plenty of nearby hotels and short-term home rentals in the town of Fenwick Island. Many of these hotels are just blocks from the beach, and there are even more hotel options just a little further south across the state line in Maryland if needed.

Getting to this quiet island destination isn't hard either. Despite some of the secludedness, Fenwick Island State Park is not too far from some major metro areas, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia. The drive from all three cities is less than 3 hours to Fenwick Island State Park, making it a great weekend destination.

One Oakland Tribune advertisement from 1913 called East Richmond Heights "the garden of the gods." Though that slogan might have been exaggerated to sell tracts of land, this quiet, small town still ranks highly for its diversity and family-friendly lifestyle .

Mirrormont, just west of Tiger Mountain State Forest in the southeastern suburbs of Seattle, was founded in 1962, with large lots featuring plenty of trees —and signature A-frame style homes. This self-described " hamlet " was created in 2006 on previously unorganized territory in Clackamas County, southeast of Portland. First founded as a housing cooperative in 1946 , Ladera has a colorful history. Maps show Tropical Depression Debby's path and forecast

Debby made landfall for a second time early Thursday as a tropical storm near Bulls Bay, South Carolina, the National Hurricane Center said. It weakened to a tropical depression later in the day and is forecast to move up the East Coast, spreading heavy rain and possible flooding through the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by the weekend.

Debby first made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday on Florida's Big Bend coast. As of 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, it had maximum sustained winds of 30 mph, the Miami-based hurricane center said. Debby's center was about 80 miles northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina, and some 90 miles northwest of Raleigh, North Carolina. It was moving north-northeast at 26 mph.

The storm's generally sluggish pace means Debby has been lingering for a long time in places it passes over, making flooding risks high across the regions in its path.

As the storm heads toward the Northeast, meteorologists said, Debby would most likely converge with a frontal zone farther up the East Coast — essentially meaning it will cross over an atmospheric threshold and into a different air mass — and become an extratropical cyclone as it dumps rain on places as far north as upstate New York and Vermont.

Tropical cyclone is an umbrella term that encompasses tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes, which differ based on their strength. An extratropical cyclone can be as weak as a tropical depression or as strong as a tropical storm, but unlike tropical cyclones, they are cold at the core and therefore can't quickly grow into a hurricane.

Storm surge forecast

The map below, updated Thursday morning, showed the highest potential peak storm surge heights, including tides. Forecasters noted that the timing of peak surge and high tide in a given area, and whether they coincide or not, will ultimately determine how destructive the inundation will be.

Heavy rainfall totals dominate the forecast

The hurricane center said Thursday that Debby "is expected to produce an additional 3 to 6 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts across portions of southeastern North Carolina, leading to maximum storm total amounts as high as 15 inches," the hurricane center said. "Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches over portions of eastern South Carolina will bring maximum storm total amounts as high as 20 to 25 inches. Considerable flooding is expected across portions of eastern South Carolina and southeast North Carolina through Friday."

"From central North Carolina northward across portions of Virginia, 3 to 7 inches with local amounts to 10 inches, are expected through Friday," forecasters said. "This rainfall will likely result in areas of considerable flash and urban flooding, with river flooding possible."

"From portions of Maryland north through Upstate New York and Vermont, 2 to 4 inches, with local amounts to 6 inches, are expected through Friday night," the hurricane center said. "This will likely result in areas of considerable flash and urban flooding as well as river flooding."
