The 2021 Trek Powerfly FS 7 on test – Is this the all-round eMTB of tomorrow?

mtb trek opinioni

Trek have completely redesigned the Powerfly FS, overhauling the concept to target a much wider audience, from trekking and leisure riders, to moderate trail adventurers. We tested the 120/100 mm travel eMTB with the Bosch Performance Line CX motor to find out whether the new Trek Powerfly FS 7 is the all-rounder that many have been looking for.

mtb trek opinioni

There’s no doubt that if we won the lottery, we would own more than one bike: one for long rides, one for flowing single track, one for fast commutes… But since none of us have a goose that lays golden eggs, we have to think carefully about which bike to invest in. Trek aim to solve this problem with the new Powerfly FS 7. We put the American eMTB through its paces in the Alps of South Tyrol to find out what it’s capable of. Can the 120 mm front and 100 mm rear travel eMTB with 29″ wheels and its Bosch Performance Line CX motor be the one bike for (almost) everyone?

mtb trek opinioni

The Trek Powerfly FS 7 in detail

The Powerfly FS has a distinct look and the unique design with the shock positioned behind the seat tube, together with the low-slung top tube, immediately catch your eye. A fender protects the rear shock from being bombarded by dirt from the rear wheel. The 85 Nm Bosch Performance Line CX motor and the 625 Wh battery are neatly integrated into the frame while the battery is easy to remove from the side of the down tube, even featuring a convenient carrying handle. Mounted in front of the stem, the Bosch Kiox display is easy to read but its navigation function is rudimentary at best. Unfortunately, Trek don’t offer any builds featuring Bosch’s new Nyon display with its extensive navigation functions. It’s a shame, the Nyon would look great on the bike! However, a model with the Bosch SmartphoneHub is available.

mtb trek opinioni

The components of the Trek Powerfly FS 7

In general, the componentry is good, consisting of a Shimano SLX/XT drivetrain, Shimano SLX brakes, 120 mm TransX dropper post and RockShox SIDLuxe Select+ shock. However, the 120 mm travel RockShox 35 Gold RL fork could be better. It does a good job of absorbing large impacts but a more sensitive fork would significantly increase comfort and traction at the front. The tires, handlebars, stem and wheels are supplied in-house. For frame size XS and S, Trek rely on 27.5″ wheels whereas sizes M, L and X roll on 29″ wheels. This should allow for consistent handling across all frame sizes. The Powerfly 7 is available for a reasonable € 5,360 and is approved for a maximum permissible weight of 136 kg. If you want to use the Powerfly FS for commuting and running errands, Trek have made the bike compatible with all the accessories you might need, including mudguards, a stand, luggage racks and lights. Alternatively, the € 6,335 Trek Powerfly FS 9 comes equipped with all of this as standard, including the Bosch SmartphoneHub.

The Geometry of the Trek Powerfly FS

mtb trek opinioni

Almost like you’re flying

How does such a versatile bike ride? The first thing you’ll notice when you climb aboard is the very low top tube and the freedom of movement that it provides. The riding position is compact and upright, which is great for long, leisurely rides and sightseeing. Your weight is evenly distributed between your hands and seat, contributing to the bikes overall comfort. An added bonus is the dropper seat post which makes getting on and off even easier.

mtb trek opinioni

With its predictable handling, wide handlebars, reliable brakes and high-volume tires, the bike instils you with confidence. The response of the RockShox 35 Gold fork is mediocre. A better fork could significantly increase comfort and, above all, traction. The rear suspension does a good job of managing its 100 mm travel as it doesn’t bottom out harshly and only releases as much travel as is absolutely necessary. The rider always stays informed about what’s happening on the trail beneath them without it being unpleasant. With an active riding style, the bike offers a lot of support and also responds to quick direction changes with immediate precision. The Trek Powerfly FS 7 is a nimble and intuitive ebike, allowing both beginners and experts to get their money’s worth. The Powerfly is a versatile eMTB that is equally suited to relaxed cruising, sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors as it is to more action-packed rides in moderate terrain. It’s an excellent companion for classic trekking riders who want to explore new terrain and aren’t afraid of tackling easy trails. Experienced riders will also get their money’s worth for demanding riding but you’ll have to know what you’re doing. The Powerfly FS 7 only reaches its limits on alpine trails and rough tracks.

mtb trek opinioni

Conclusionn

With its smart concept, the Trek Powerfly FS 7 is sure to meet the needs of many trekking riders. With its upright and comfortable riding position, efficient suspension and intuitive handling, it performs well on moderate off-road terrain as well as long gravel and forest path rides. If you’re looking for a trekking bike that rides like a sofa, this isn’t it, but if you’re looking for the trekking ebike of tomorrow, you’ll love the Powerfly.

Breve recensione (per principianti) Trek Procaliber 9.6 2021

Biker serius

In pratica sfrega solo sotto sforzo.

Get to know your Remedy from your Fuel

trek mountain bikes

We have a look over the 2018 range of Trek mountain bikes to see who suits what in a range featuring the Fuel EX, Remedy, Marlin and Powerfly models.

>>> All our recent Trek mountain bike reviews

Getting to grips with 2018 Trek mountain bikes

If you pop over to Trek’s website and click on ‘mountain bikes’ more than 120 bikes appear in front of you. It’s rather daunting. Choice is good but can be bewildering. So we’ve boiled Trek’s MTB range down to the basics to get you started.

>>> Trek road bikes: which model is right for you?

trek mountain bikes

What type of bike do you want?

We think it’s best to split the whole range into three categories and then go from there: hardtail , full suspension and electric .

What type of riding will you be doing?

Once you’ve chosen one of the three categories you can refine it to the type of riding you want to do: cross-country, trail or downhill.

With those two category types chosen you’ll be left with a much smaller pool of Trek models to consider.

We’re going to assume that you already know the type of mountain bike you want. We’re not going to go into any debates or theorising (hardtail vs full suspension, 27.5 vs 29 , Plus vs Fat etc etc).

trek mountain bikes

Trek hardtails

There are five hardtail models in Trek’s range: Marlin, X-Caliber, Roscoe, Procaliber and Stache.

Trek use their own proprietary frame materials. Their aluminium stuff is called Alpha. Their carbon stuff is called OCLV.

Some of their high end hardtails have the ‘IsoSpeed Decoupler’ configuration where the seat tube is designed to flex for compliance.

The Trek Marlin is an entry level cross-country focussed hardtail ranging from £370 up to £550. Thee are four models in total (the Marlin 4, 5, 6 and 7). The frame is Trek’s ‘Silver Alpha’ aluminium.

The Trek X-Caliber cross-country range starts from £650 and tops out at £1,150. The frame is Trek’s ‘Gold Alpha’ aluminium. The frames have internal routing for stealth dropper seatposts. The components are of a higher quality than the Marlins.

The Trek Roscoe range of Plus-tyred trail hardtails running from £800 to £ 1,250. The frame has internal routing for dropper posts and is made from Trek’s ‘Alpha Gold’ aluminium.

The £1,300 to £6,500(!) Trek Procaliber cross-country race bike range can look a a bit confusing; there are aluminium Procalibers, OCLV carbon Procalibers and Super Light OCLV Procalibers. Although the frame material varies the intent of Procalibers is the same: xc racing. The geometry remains the same. All Procalibers have the ‘IsoSpeed Decoupler’ feature of deliberate flex.

The Trek Stache bikes are rather unique in that they are 29er Plus bikes. They roll on some seriously large rubber! Monster trucking hardtails. Price: £1,300 to £3,500.

Trek full suspension bikes

There are five Trek full susser types: Fuel EX, Remedy, Top Fuel, Slash and Session.

All Trek full sus bikes use a version of the ‘ABP’ suspension design. ABP stands for Active Braking Pivot. The rear wheel axle is also the rear pivot. The idea is to prevent the suspension from locking up during rear braking.

Fuel EX, Remedy and Top Fuel bikes also have RE:aktiv rear shock damping. This damping design claims to ‘know’ which forces are coming from the pedals/rider and which forces are coming from the trail, and it reacts accordingly.

The Trek Fuel EX 130mm travel, full sus, all-rounder, trail bikes come as either 29er or as 27.5 Plus. They can be run with either wheel size but are initially purchased with one or the other. Starting from £1,800 for aluminium versions they top out at £6,500 for the top end carbon version.

>>> Trek Fuel EX Plus 9.8 27.5 (2017) review

The Trek Remedy is the 150mm travel trail-cum-enduro bike. Prices range from £2,300 to £6,000. There are aluminium Remedy models and carbon fibre Remedy models. For 2018 they are all 27.5in wheel.

The Trek Top Fuel bikes are full suspension XC race machines. 100mm of travel at either end. Begins with the aluminium Top Fuel 8 for £2,400 and goes up to the £7,800 carbon Top Fuel 9.9 RSL.

>>> Trek Top Fuel 9 (2017) review

trek mountain bikes

2018 Trek Slash

The 160mm travel enduro racing Trek Slash range is all 29in wheels and carbon only for 2018. It’s a bold move by Trek but one that makes the Slash arguably the most defined model in their range.

>>> Trek Slash 9.9 29 RSL (2017) review

The Trek Session is the downhill bike. Aluminium or carbon. And now available as a frameset as a 29er with 190mm of travel. Complete build Sessions are all 27.5in wheel and deliver 210mm of rear travel.

trek mountain bikes

Trek electric mountain bikes

There are three electric mountain bike types: Powerfly, Powerfly FS and Powerfly LT Plus.

The Trek Powerfly hardtails start at £2,300 and go up to £3,300. Aluminium frames with 100mm travel forks up front. The motors come from Bosch. There is also a £4,200 Powerfly Plus with 2.8in tyres.

On the Trek Powerfly FS bikes the ‘FS’ stands for Full Suspension, 130mm of suspension to be precise. The Powerfly FS bikes are aimed at cross-country riding with a bit of rougher stuff every now and then. All but the entry level £3,500 Powerfly 5 FS come with Plus tyres.

trek mountain bikes

Trek Powerfly Launch in Verbier, Switzerland

The Trek Powerfly LT Plus models have more travel (150mm) and fatter tyres (2.8in Plus tyres). These e-bikes are up for a bit more aggro riding and technical trails. Prices: £4,200 to £5,250.

>> Trek Powerfly 9 LT (2018) first ride

Trek Women’s mountain bikes

Even as stalwarts of the whole Women’s Specific Design thang, Trek (along with most other bike brands) are now seemingly moving away from design theories that assume that women’s body proportions are different to men’s.

Bikes fit humans, not genders. Rider height is the only thing you should really be factoring in when choosing a bike. It really is only saddles that need to be a bit different to men’s.

It’s fine to opt for a supposedly ‘men’s’ Trek model if it fits your height. Get the saddle swapped out for a ladies saddle at time of purchase. Sorted.

Having said that, if you want a Women’s bike because you prefer the different colourway and decals, fair enough.

  • Trek Skye – entry level cross-country hardtails
  • Trek X-Caliber Women’s –  lighter and fancier cross-country hardtails
  • Trek Roscoe Women’s – Plus tyred trail hardtail
  • Trek Procaliber Women’s – XC racing hardtail
  • Trek Fuel EX Women’s – 130mm travel full suspension all-rounder
  • Trek Remedy Women’s – 150mm trail/enduro full susser
  • Trek Powerfly Women’s – entry level e-bike hardtail
  • Top Fuel Women’s – XC racing 100mm travel full suspension

Race Shop Limited models

You may spot some Trek mountain bikes with ‘Race Shop Limited’ (or ‘RSL’) in their model name. These are essentially super high spec models. Often limited edition. And sometimes with slightly tweaked designs (a bit more travel, slacker geometry etc etc).

The Best Trek Bikes You Can Buy Right Now

The Wisconsin-headquartered company has local values and a global impact.

Trek’s founding story is out of a Hollywood director’s mind and a non-fiction writer’s wish list: In 1976, Bevill Hogg and Dick Burke drank beers at the Pine Knoll Supper Club in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and debated over the name of their would-be cycling company. They settled on Trek and soon went to work in a barn between Madison and Milwaukee, where a total of five employees built the brand’s first bikes out of steel. The company is still based near the barn that facilitated its first years—its modern headquarters are in Waterloo, Wisconsin.

A super-efficient bike that shreds down hills

“We’re a uniquely American success story from small-town USA,” said brand manager Eric Bjorling. “So many of the values that have led to Trek’s success—hard work, craftsmanship, responsibility, commitment to our customers—are Wisconsin values.”

Its values may be hyper-local and American, but it’s now a company at the center of a globalized cycling market that has made industry-leading technological advances.

A recent example of Trek’s “industry-leading technological advances” mentioned above is IsoSpeed, which is available at the front and rear on certain Trek models. The rear decoupler is at the junction of the seat and top tube, and the front decoupler is located at the top of the headset.

Photography, Still life photography, Macro photography,

The front IsoSpeed decoupler allows the fork steerer tube to flex more than it would with a fixed upper headset cup, which helps damp some impacts. The rear IsoSpeed decoupler provides increased vertical seat tube deflection (compared to a traditional fixed seat tube design) for a smoother ride. The rear IsoSpeed system is adjustable on the latest Madone and Domane models, which lets the rider adjust the compliance level for terrain and or personal preference. You might not even need to adjust the rear slider to experience the road-smoothing effects of the two decouplers—our test team found that the all-over effect was fast and smooth performance equally suited to asphalt and cobbles.

Famed Classics specialist Fabian Cancellara, who retired from racing as a member of World Tour team Trek-Segafredo, worked with Trek engineers to develop the final version of IsoSpeed, which is especially useful on the cobbles and other rough surfaces that riders encounter on most Classics courses. Since the tech’s 2012 release on the Domane, Trek has claimed that IsoSpeed doesn’t sacrifice power transfer at the cost of more compliance.

Along with bolstering its ride-smoothing technologies, Trek has also begun implementing internal-storage compartments in the downtube of some of its road and mountain bikes. These handy “trap doors” debuted in the new Domane and Fuel EX, where an included organizer roll has pockets for a tube, CO2 cartridge, inflator head, and tire lever.

Bicycle part, Bicycle frame, Bicycle wheel, Bicycle fork, Bicycle tire, Bicycle, Tire, Road bicycle, Vehicle, Mountain bike,

Trek has also started moving away from women’s specific bikes and adopting a “more bikes for everyone” ethos, where all bikes are offered in unisex sizing. The idea is that this will ensure that no matter your gender, you’ll have access to the full array of paint colors, build kits, and sizes.

And of course, Trek continues to roll out exciting new bikes. This year’s slate includes the third generation of the popular Domane roadster (now with even more ride-smoothing technology) and fully revamped versions of the Fuel EX and Top Fuel mountain bikes, which are both more capable than ever.

If you’re in the market for a road, mountain, or city bike (or any other style), Trek likely has something made for you.

How We Chose

Trek is among the most popular bike brands and has one of the most extensive bike lines in the world. Because it makes a lot of bikes—and a lot of bikes that our readers want to know about—our test team evaluates, rides, and reviews many Trek models throughout the year. This is not a complete overview of all of Trek’s models, but a focused list of the best. These are the Trek bikes that offer exceptional performance, value, technology, or features (or some combination of all four).

Domane SLR 7

The third-generation of the Domane isn’t just the best Domane; it’s Trek’s best-ever road bike. And it’s one of the best road bikes on the market right now thanks to an equal blend of performance, comfort, practicality, and versatility. The Domane got more aerodynamic than the previous iteration (saving 12 watts at 40Kph), it takes at least a 38mm tire, and has hidden fender mounts and sleek internal storage. It also features compliance-enhancing decouplers front and rear that improve rider comfort and control without detracting from the bike’s pedaling efficiency or handling. The Domane’s steering is light and its handling precise, but with a mellower edge and more stability than a traditional road racing bike.

―best women’s trail bike―, $1,259.99 trek roscoe 7.

Trek Roscoe 7

There’s so much to love about this bike. The SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain, with a 30t chainring and 10-50t cassette, gives a massive range of gears and plenty of low-range options for easing the pain of climbing steep hills. Its 27.5-inch wheels are maneuverable in tight, technical terrain, and the 2.8-inch tubeless-ready tires offer great traction and a plush ride. The RockShox Judy Silver fork has plenty of travel for getting rowdy (1oomm for size the extra-small frame size, 120mm for small through large) and can be locked out for more efficient off-trail riding. And speaking of rowdy, a 100mm dropper post is a very cool addition to a bike at this price.

Trek marlin 7.

Marlin 7

The Marlin 7, which also comes in a women’s version , is ideal for aspiring racers, everyday trail riders, and casual commuters alike. Riders who like to pedal fast will appreciate its steep, aggressive head and seat angles, and a high bottom bracket that offers decent pedal clearance on the trail. Its cables are internally routed, too, which isn’t common on bikes at this price. It has a 2x9-speed Shimano drivetrain, which strays from the single-chainring trend that’s popular on off-road bikes at the moment but also provides plenty of gearing options. And even though the RockShox XC30 100mm coil-spring fork is heavier than some comparable air-spring models, it does a surprisingly good job on super-rocky trails. Add to that the 2.2-inch-wide Bontrager tires on 29-inch Bontrager Connection rims, which never squirmed too much on sketchy terrain, and you have a bike that not only looks fast but offers the kind of sharp handling and precise steering you’d expect from higher-priced racing models.

―BEST ELECTRIC ROAD BIKE―

Trek domane+ hp.

Domane+ HP

The Domane+ e-road bike is the electric version of, naturally, the popular Domane. It’s designed for riders who appreciate that bike’s reliable comfort and IsoSpeed technology but want the added fun and function of e-assist. It’s also the ideal companion for anyone coming back from injury, slower riders who want to mix it up with a speedy group, and couples with different fitness levels. A Bosch Performance Speed motor provides a very welcome 28 mph of pedal assist, and the 500Wh Powertube battery sleekly integrates into the down tube. You also get massive tire clearance, fender and rack compatibility, and Trek’s Blendr stem for cleanly mounting accessories such as lights and computers to your handlebar.

―BEST NEW XC BIKE―

Supercaliber 9.9, trek supercaliber 9.9 xx1 axs.

Supercaliber 9.9 XX1 AXS

The new Supercaliber is the brand’s latest attempt to create the ultimate XC race bike by merging the best attributes of a hardtail (stiffness, low weight) and full-suspension (traction, comfort, control) frame into one. And based on our rides, it’s the closest yet to that best-of-both-worlds machine with 60mm of rear travel. Trek’s IsoStrut design places a Fox Float shock into a tube—both ends of that tube are bolted to the underside of the SuperCal’s top tube. At the top of the seat stays is a sleeve (Trek calls it a carriage) that slides over the bolted-in tube. Cutouts in the tube allow a cross bolt to pass through the sleeve, the tube, and the rear shock eyelet. Trek says this design eliminates rotation around the shock shaft and prevents side-loading the shaft so the bike has the stiffness and feel of a hardtail, but with real full suspension for better comfort and control. And based on back to back testing with a hardail, the Supercaliber is everything it was designed to be.

―BEST VALUE HARDTAIL―

Procaliber 9.7, trek procaliber 9.7.

Procaliber 9.7

Trek did a masterful job with this bike, skimping in the right places to save money and splurging in the areas that count for performance. The carbon frame is extremely lightweight; our size XL test bike weighed in at only 21.6 pounds. The IsoSpeed decoupler at the junction of the seat tube and top tube offers so much vertical compliance you can actually see the seat tube moving if you bounce on the saddle. Tubeless-ready Bontrager Kovee Elite 23 carbon wheels also keep weight in check and roll very quickly when wrapped in (stock) 2.2-inch Bontrager XR2 Team Issue tires. Be warned, though, these are race-day tires for dry conditions and not well suited to daily trail riding or muddy courses. SRAM’s GX Eagle drivetrain and alloy SRAM X1 Eagle crank keep cost in check and can stand up to plenty of hard riding and abuse. They do add significant weight, though, which makes this bike’s overall lightness all the more impressive. Our tester was surprised, however, to find a narrow 720mm handlebar. He said it felt strange at first but didn’t notice it anymore after a few minutes of riding.

―BEST ENTRY-LEVEL RACER―

Domane al 2, trek domane al 2 disc.

Domane AL 2 Disc

The good looks of the Domane AL 2 are the first indication that Trek didn’t mess around with this bike. Start digging deeper and you’ll find even more to like. The shaped aluminum frame is nicely made and has a vibration-damping carbon fork. The rims are tubeless-ready so you can upgrade to smoother-rolling tires filled with puncture sealant. And new for 2021, the Domane AL 2 is outfitted with disc brakes. That does come with a bump in price—the previous version with rim brakes was only $860. But if you ride in variable weather conditions, the more reliable performance from disc brakes may save your bacon. The shifters snick-snick the drivetrain through the gears lightly and crisply. There are other little surprising nuggets, like the pocket in the frame for a speed sensor and the included light and computer mount that cleanly integrates into the stem. Best of all, the bike is a joy to ride. Handling is stable, precise, and attentive to pedal strokes so you feel like you’re flying over the road, not pushing across it.

Top fuel 9.9, trek top fuel 9.9 x01.

Top Fuel 9.9 X01

While the 2019 Top Fuel featured 100mm of travel in the front and back, the new top-of-the-line Top Fuel 9.9 has 120mm of front suspension and 115mm in the rear. Trek also did away with the floating mount that compressed the shock from both ends. Instead, the lower eyelet is fixed to the downtube, a change that reduces weight and improves stiffness. Tires are also beefed up. Instead of skinny race-oriented ones, this model comes with 29x2.40-inch Bontrager XR3 Team Issue rubber designed for a variety of riding conditions. Gnar capability is further enhanced thanks to a frame that’s slacker and longer. And it’s spec’d with a shorter stem and wider bars.

It’s no longer debatable that “disc brakes aren’t aero enough to race on.” Tell that to the now numerous Tour de France stage winners who’ve won highly contested sprints on disc-brake-equipped bikes. And try telling that to Mads Pedersen , who rode to the World Championship title on this bike. The Madone SLR 9 Disc is the premier aerodynamic offering from Trek. The SLR 9 Disc’s frame is made from 700 Series OCLV carbon and features an adjustable IsoSpeed, which can be set to create more or less frame compliance. This technology gives the bike versatility to suit the rider and the route. Pro-level components include a full Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset (50/34 crankset, 11-28 cassette), flat-mount hydraulic disc brakes, Bontrager Aeolus XXX 6 carbon wheels (tubeless-ready), and a Madone-specific seatpost, headset, and handlebar. Trek and Specialized are two of the most famous mountain bike brands in the industry; if you’ve been looking for a reliable mountain bike, you won’t go wrong choosing from one of these brands.

When it comes to making a decision about which MTB brand is right for you, there are several factors you’ll need to consider. While both brands offer something unique to riders, some distinct differences will cater to specific riding styles and rider preferences.

Depending on what you’re looking for in a mountain bike, Trek and Specialized have tons of premium selections for you to choose from. One of the most notable differences I came across when researching both of these brands was that Trek has a more extensive selection of products than Specialized does.

One commonality that both of these brands have is that they offer various mountain bike types, including full suspension bikes , hardtails , and hybrids.

Unless you are an experienced mountain bike rider, it can be hard to tell the difference between Trek and Specialized as the differences can be very subtle. Both brands will also have a very dis tinct riding feel, which is something you’ll want to consider and try out yourself before making a decision.

For those of you who are in the market for a new mountain bike and are struggling to find which one is the perfect match, this comprehensive comparison will provide you with all of the essential information you need to make an informed and educated decision.

Table of Contents

Main Differences Between Trek vs Specialized MTB

The main differences between Trek vs Specialized MTB are:

  • Trek bikes use a full-floater and active breaking pivot rear-suspension system, whereas Specialized MTB use Future Shock Rear.
  • Trek offers entry-level bikes that tend to be expensive, whereas Specialized MTB come more affordable.
  • Trek bikes come with a more conventional design, whereas Specialized MTB have a mode modern design.
  • Trek bikes tend to integrate more functionality focused design elements in their bikes, whereas Specialized MTB are focused more on efficiency and durability.

These are some of the primary differences between Specialized and Trek bikes that you can expect to encounter when choosing between the two. While both of these brands are well-known for their high-quality manufacturing standards, they each offer tailored MTB experiences based on the rider’s preference. You can’t compare a low-end Specialized bike to a high-end Trek bike and vice versa.

Brand Comparison

Brand Comparison

Trek mountain bikes focus heavily on trail riding. They incorporate several innovative elements such as OCLV carbon and Alpha Aluminum to deliver stunning mountain bike performance that often times far outperforms the competition. Specialized focuses on a similar approach however their approach is more cohesive.

Specialized offers a wider array of innovative riding accessories and add-ons you can add on to elevate your riding even further and the company prioritizes aerodynamics and performance over durability. These are all factors to consider when making a decision about which brand is right for you.

Core Feature Comparison

Trek and Specialized have a lot of similarities when it comes to the core features you can expect to find when choosing between the two brands.

However, the variants between the two that do exist can have a massive impact on your ride’s quality.

Below, I’m going to cover all of the most critical aspects that riders need to know when it comes to the overall usability of the various bikes offered by Specialized and Trek.

Build Quality/Frame Material

An interesting thing to note about Trek and Specialized mountain bikes is that both companies use premium quality aluminum to craft their bikes.

However, in certain instances, the particular type of bike you buy will determine what material it is made from.

On high-end model mountain bikes, you can expect to find bikes made from carbon fiber materials. Keep in mind, the higher quality the material is that you get, the more expensive your mountain bike will be.

Made for riders, by riders - Specialized Bikes | Mike's Bikes

Whether you’re all about climbing or bombing nasty descents (or both), Specialized has a bike for every style of mountain biking you could want. Road cyclists have just as legendary of a lineup at their fingertips with the Tarmac, Venge, Roubaix, and other aero machines ready to flatten mountains and dart to the head of the pack.

Selections Offered

Both Specialized and Trek offer a wide range of different mountain bike options ranging from full-suspension bikes, hardtail bikes, electric bikes, and more.

Both of these companies also offer a wide range of color options, designs, and configurations in their bikes for you to choose from, making it easy to find the exact mountain bike for you, regardless of what you are looking for.

Gear Functionality

Gear Functionality

Smooth gear transitions can be the difference between a great ride and a gnarly crash. Without the proper gear ratio installed on your mountain bike, you will risk losing serious performance and functionality on the trail.

Both Specialized and Trek provide various mountain bikes that use high-quality gear components , which will enable you to achieve smooth shifts regardless of how gnarly the trail is.

Braking System

While both brands have similar set-ups in terms of the way that the brakes function on their bikes, Trek bikes come with this unique feature known as an active braking pivot, which keeps the suspension on your bike busy when you engage the rear brake.

Specialized mountain bikes also use premium brake set-ups that are fast-acting, accurate, and powerful.

Overall Value

Overall Value

All in all, both of these mountain bike brands utilize innovative design and premium grade components that combine to deliver smooth actioning and hassle-free rides.

When it comes to making a decision about which one of these bike brands is best for you, the final answer will really depend on what your personal riding preferences and needs are.

If you’re someone looking for versatility, functionality, and power for beginners and intermediate riders, Trek has many more options for you to choose from when compared to Specialized.

For those that want more modern looking and pre-built bikes built for racing and bombing mountains, Specialized offers more options than Trek. It’s all a matter of what you need out of your mountain bike and what you’re willing to pay.

Make A Decision: Which brand is better?

I would say Trek just due to the fact that it offers the most variety and selections. If you want a more modernized approach to mountain biking in general.

To put it simply, Trek is a titan in the industry. The company is currently rated as the #1 mountain bike brand in the world, and for good reason!

At the end of the day, it’s your decision, and you should only choose the mountain bike that meets your needs the best according to whatever specific ride style you rock!

Yo Ciclismo

  1. Trek X-Caliber 8 hardtail review

Trek. Price as reviewed: £1,390.00. TAGS:Top Story. The Trek X-Caliber 8 is a sure-footed 29er hardtail mountain bike, with plenty of reliable elements that boost its score to impressive levels, but a few missteps that hold it back from quite making it as one of the best hardtail mountain bikeswe've tested. There's a whole lot to like though.

  3. Breve recensione (per principianti) Trek Procaliber 9.6 2021

Bike. MTB. 10/10/20. #1.

  4. Opinions on Trek : r/mountainbikes

    4. Reply. shanep3 • 2 yr. ago. Yeah, being able to test ride is a big plus. If you're riding mostly xc, fuel is one of the best in the market. A downside is the level of components for the price. Trek is generally high in price for what you get. As for 7 vs 8, if you think you'd eventually upgrade parts, go with the 7.

  5. Trek Fuel EX 9.7 XT Gen 6 review

Price as reviewed: £4,175.00. TAGS: Top Story. Hot on the heels of the Trek Fuel EXe, the new Fuel EX shares a similar silhouette, albeit without the compact TQ motor and 360Wh battery. And just like the EXe, the EX is available with an aluminium or full carbon frame, where both options sport integrated down tube storage.

  16. Trek Bikes

There's always somebody willing to brag about how they picked up a new Yeti SB 5.5 with an extra set of ENVEs for $1500! The trek is a perfectly good bike, my friend rides a roughly equivalent cannondale hardtail, and he has plenty of fun when he rides with me on my significantly more expensive bike.

  17. Scott spark 960 vs trek remedy 9 : r/MTB

Hi! I'm new to mtb riding and for my first bike I am undecided between the following bikes due to budget and location constraints: 2017 Scott spark 960 for sale ad. 2016 Trek remedy 9 (XL) with new seatpost and tires, serviced shocks for sale ad. The for sale ads are in Norwegian but I would assume google translate will handle them and most specs are in english.

  19. r/MTB on Reddit: Scott Spark 960 or Trek Top Fuel 5 or 7? Or something

There's a decent sale on Scott Sparks, which puts either the 970 or 960 in my price range and maybe the 950 if there was a really compelling reason to get it. There's also the Trek Top Fuel 5 and 7 (the 7 is a little more than I want to spend, but I could if I had to).

  22. Trek : r/MTB

My first MTB ever was a Trek Stache which was a totally unique and fun AF bike to learn on (29+ hardtail). That bike was unfortunately totaled in a theft attempt when someone broke into my storage locker in my apartment complex. The local Trek shop for me approved by HQ for a 20% discount towards a new bike. Took advantage and got a Fuel EX, my ...
