Drake announces more shows on 2023 North American tour with 21 Savage

Drake is going on a North American tour for the first time in five years, and he's taking 21 Savage along for the ride.

The duo behind chart-topping single "Rich Flex," which debuted in the top slot of Billboard's Global 200 chart , will perform a 43-date arena tour this summer , adding 14 more performances to the initial 29 concerts announced. The It's All a Blur Tour includes stops across the U.S. and Canada kicking off on June 16 in New Orleans and wrapping up in Glendale, Arizona, on Sept. 5.

The last time Drake, 36, went on tour was half a decade ago for the Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour in 2018.

During his break from the road, the rapper put out a number of studio albums including "Her Loss" with 21 Savage, along with a smattering of other releases. The tour's name is a nod to Drake's work over the last five years, according to a Monday release.

The announcement delivers on a tease from Drake made during his January performance at the Apollo Theater in Harlem while thanking fans. "I'll be out and about on the road this year, so I hope to see a lot of the same faces," he said at the time.

The Canadian rapper took to Instagram to announce the tour Monday with a montage-style video on Instagram. "IT’S ALL A BLUR TOUR with @21savage," he wrote. "Dates now live on DrakeRelated.com click the link in bio for more information and details for your location."

How to get tickets to Drake's tour

General sale begins Friday at noon local time on drakerelated.com. The newly added tour dates will be included in the sale.

Tickets went on presale Wednesday, with a general sale opening Friday.

Starting on Wednesday, Cash App card holders were able to purchase tickets starting at noon local time until Thursday 10 p.m. local time.

On Thursday, Sprite, which is sponsoring the tour, offered some pre-sale tickets. Ticket-seekers could sign up for emails and watch for updates on Sprite.com to gain presale access.

Drake and 21 Savage have long history

It's not surprising to see Drake and 21 Savage touring together, especially after the release of their 16-track project, "Her Loss," which they performed together at New York's famed Apollo Theater in January. All 16 tracks on "Her Loss" debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 last year.

The two also shared the mic on "Mr. Right Now" from 21 Savage's 2020 "Savage Mode II" album and in turn, 21 Savage was featured on Drake's 2021 "Certified Lover Boy" with "Knife Talk." The two also closed out Drake's 2022 offering "Honestly, Nevermind" with "Jimmy Cooks."

While he has held one-off performances in the past few years—like his shows at Harlem’s Apollo Theater or his October World Weekend —the It’s All a Blur Tour is Drake’s first since 2019 , before the onset of the pandemic . Drake Adds 12 Dates to ‘It’s All a Blur’ Tour With 21 Savage

Drake is coming. The rapper added 12 new dates to his It’s All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, his first stretch of shows in North America since the “Aubrey & the Three Migos” tour hit arenas in 2018.

The It’s All a Blur tour will kick off in Memphis, Tennessee, on June 29 and extend through Oct. 7 with a final show in Toronto, Ontario. Drake will make stops in Nashville, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Montreal, Inglewood, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and more, bringing the tour to a massive 54 shows this summer.

The new set of dates includes a fourth night of shows in both Inglewood and Brooklyn, as well as second nights in Glendale and Nashville. Drake will now also perform on new dates in Columbus, Memphis, Denver, Austin, Milwaukee, and Charlotte. The tour will close out with back-to-back hometown shows at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena.

The tour announcement follows the reveal of J.Cole’s 2023 Dreamville Festival lineup, which features Drake as a headliner. Since his last tour, Drake has released two mixtapes – Care Package and Dark Lane Demo Tapes – and three studio albums, including 2021’s Certified Lover Boy , the 21 Savage-assisted Her Loss , and his dance music opus Honestly, Nevermind.

Per a press release, “The title, a celebration of the last decade, sums up Drake’s sentiment of the unprecedented run as he gets ready to hit the road.” (If the past ten years of Drake releases is a blur to you, that stretches back to Nothing Was the Same .) The notoriously nostalgic rapper reflected on the time that’s passed in a clip announcing the tour, from some of his past shows to the birth of his son. Call it an era tour, singular.

The 29-date tour kicks off June 16 in New Orleans and runs through September 5 in Glendale ( sorry, Swiftdale? ), Arizona. It includes multiple dates in Chicago, Atlanta, and Boston — not to mention in Manhattan and Brooklyn, plus Inglewood and Los Angeles. And yes, a press release promises, the Toronto dates are on their way. Drake has played a number of one-off gigs recently, and reflective ones at that, like a two-night stand at New York’s Apollo Theater and his October World Weekend , which featured a reunion with Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. He also has a gig coming up headlining J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival . His last full tour, in 2018, was the Aubrey and the Three Migos tour with Migos. As for 21? He’s content to just do his thing and let Jimmy Cook .

Drake's 'It's All A Blur' Tour Will Look Back At His Career

And he’s bringing 21 Savage.

Drake has announced his first North American headlining tour in five years — and he’s bringing 21 Savage along. The ‘It’s All A Blur’ tour kicks off this summer and will see the rappers playing major arenas throughout the U.S. and Canada during its 29+ date run.

Announced March 13, the tour kicks off June 16 in New Orleans, LA and wraps three months later on Sept. 5 in Glendale, AZ. In between, Drake and 21 Savage will hit most major U.S. cities playing two nights at each location, except New York City, where they’ll play four nights splitting between Brookyln’s Barclay’s Center and Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden. More dates are expected to be announced soon, as well as the rapper’s hometown shows in Toronto.

Drake’s last headlining tour was in 2018 for the Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour. It’s All A Blur , as its name indicates, will be a look-back of sorts at the last decade of the decorated rapper’s career (call it his ‘Eras Tour’). The run will be the first time Drake will be touring albums, Care Package , Dark Lane Demo Tapes , Certified Lover Boy , Honestly, Nevermind , and Her Loss , his 2022 joint record with 21 Savage. While 21 Savage is listed as the tour’s only official guest, it’s unclear if he’ll be opening, or will be performing jointly with Drake on stage.

The first slate of dates kick off in New Orleans, LA and wrap in Glendale, AZ. Additional shows including hometown shows in Toronto will be announced at a later date.

Drake Shakes Up It’s All A Blur Tour With New Dates & Rescheduled Shows

Drake has announced 12 new dates added to his It’s All A Blur Tour with 21 Savage as a selection of shows have now been rescheduled.

The massive trek, which now boasts 54 dates, includes new shows in cities such as Toronto, Brooklyn, Inglewood, Memphis, Milwaukee, Glendale and Denver.

The start date for the tour has been moved to June 29 in Memphis, Tennessee. Shows originally scheduled for between June 16 and July 2 in New Orleans, Nashville, Houston, Dallas, Miami and Atlanta have been moved back to take place between September 14 and October 2.

Pre-sale tickets for the new dates go on sale for CashApp card holders on Wednesday (April 26) while the general public will have their chance starting on Friday (April 28) through Drake’s DrakeRelated website .

The 21 Savage-assisted It’s All A Blur Tour is now slated to finish off with a pair of memorable shows in Drake’s hometown of Toronto on October 5 and October 7.

It’s All a Blur marks the 36-year-old’s first North American tour since 2018’s Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour alongside Migos .

The roadshow comes in support of Drake and 21 Savage’s joint album Her Loss , which arrived in November complete with cameos from Travis Scott , Birdman , Lil Yachty and more.

The project debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart after earning over 400,000 album-equivalent units in its first week — the highest sales tally in Hip Hop last year.

From there, he dove into a hits-filled set that included “Marvins Room,” “Headlines,” and “The Motto,” tallying up to a total of over 40 songs, according to setlist.fm .

21 Savage joined the festivities later in the show, making his entrance with “Red Opps,” and teamed with Drake for “Spin Bout U,” “Jimmy Cooks,” and “Rich Flex” from their “Her Loss” collab album. The rapper performed a total of 12 songs on his own while Drake’s solo set doubled that.

During the last few songs, someone in the audience threw their cell phone at Drake, hitting him in the arm in the process. In the past few weeks, several pop singers — namely Bebe Rexha, who was left with a black eye after someone hit launched a phone at her — have experienced similar unruly behavior from fans at shows. Drake didn’t react to or address the mishap on stage and closed with a vampish rendition of “Legend” from “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.”

Drake has just revealed dates for his first headlining North American tour in five years. The ‘It’s All A Blur’ Tour marks Drake's return to touring since 2018's Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour. Drake’s It’s All a Blur tour with 21 Savage is coming to L.A. and Inglewood

Drake announced Monday his It’s All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, the first North American tour for the Toronto rapper in five years.

Making 28 stops in the U.S. and Canada, the tour includes four Los Angeles-area shows in August: two at L.A.’s Crypto Arena and two more in Inglewood at the Kia Forum. Noticeably absent from the list of cities was Toronto, which will be added at a later date, along with other cities, according to a Live Nation statement.

The last time Drake toured in North America was 2018, with the Aubrey & the Three Migos tour , which featured Atlanta trio Migos. He followed that with an arena tour in Europe in 2019.

Composed almost entirely of club music jams in which he raps as little as he ever has, Drake’s seventh studio album marks a change in course.

It’s All a Blur is being marketed as a retrospective of Drake’s career in the time since, including the release of his four most recent studio albums — “Scorpion,” “Certified Lover Boy,” “Honestly, Nevermind” and “Her Loss,” the last of which Drake recorded with 21 Savage.

Zooming out even further, Drake’s label, OVO Sound, announced the tour on Twitter and Instagram with a video montage set to ethereal instrumentals with shots from his “Nothing Was the Same” (2013) years, packed with blurry, candid shots of a younger Drake on the road, culminating in more recent footage of the rapper playing with his son, Adonis.

Some fans were buying the nostalgia, with one user tweeting , “Wow man, look how time flies. Loved growing with these albums over the years.”

Drake Is Going on Tour with 21 Savage! See the Dates

The It's All a Blur tour will kick off on June 16 in New Orleans

Drake and 21 Savage are "doing something" for their fans!

The "Take Care" rapper, 36, announced Monday that he is going on the road with his Her Loss collaborator 21 Savage for the It's All a Blur tour.

The 29-date tour will kick off on June 16 in New Orleans and will make stops in major cities like Chicago, Boston, New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

It will also mark Drake's first tour since 2018's Aubrey & the Three Migos. Since then, he's released four albums including his most recent with 21 Savage, 30.

Tickets will be available for presale beginning on Wednesday while the general sale will begin on Friday on drakerelated.com .

On Instagram, Drake shared a nostalgic montage video of his life and career over the years as he announced the tour.

Drake and 21 Savage announced their collaborative album Her Loss in October during a visual for their hit single "Jimmy Cooks."

The album featured 16 songs including their hit "Rich Flex." The album also stirred up controversy with rapper Megan Thee Stallion when they seemingly accused her of lying about getting shot in the foot in the song "Circo Loco."

Drake and 21 Savage have a long history of teaming up on songs together. Alongside "Jimmy Cooks" off Drake's 2022 album Honestly, Nevermind , the pair also released Certified Lover Boy cut "Knife Talk," which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The duo previously took part in the first live performance of "Jimmy Cooks" together at a homecoming concert for colleges Morehouse and Spelman in October. The Atlanta hometown show for 21 Savage ended up becoming the perfect setting for a Drake cameo, as the two also played "Knife Talk," with Drake sharing a performance of his hit, "Nonstop."

Today, four time Grammy-award winning and multi-platinum selling artist Drake announced his long awaited return to the stage with the 2023 ‘It’s All A Blur’ Tour presented by Cash App, Visa and Sprite. Produced by Live Nation, Drake and 21 Savage will be going on a 29-date arena run with stops including Chicago, Boston, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and more with a stop in Washington, D.C. at Capital One Arena on Friday, July 28, 2023.

Four-time Grammy-winner Drake is teaming up with collaborator 21 Savage for a North American arena tour this year that includes a stop in Philadelphia.

The It's All a Blur Tour will kick off June 16 in New Orleans and stop in Dallas, Miami, New York, Montreal, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Additional shows including Toronto will be announced later.

The Canadian rapper-singer and Spotify’s most-streamed artist in the U.S. last year put out two albums in 2022, “Honestly, Nevermind” and his collaboration with 21 Savage, “Her Loss.” His last headlining tour was in 2018.

During a show at the famed Apollo Theater earlier this year, he hinted at a tour and possibly even more music on the horizon.

2016: Drake Rents 21 Savage A Ferrari For His 24th Birthday

All 21 Savage wanted for his 24th birthday was to be in the driver's seat of a Ferrari while cruising the streets of Beverly Hills — and Drake made it happen.

Many thought Drizzy purchased the candy-red sports car for 21, but the gift ended up being a loaner for the weekend to help the Atlanta rapper move around L.A. in style. Savage loved it so much that he went and actually bought a Ferrari for himself.

"Nah, he ain't buy me no car," 21 later cleared up in an interview with Real 92.3. "He did some real s—. We was just talking, and I was like 'Man, I want a Ferrari or some s—.'

"So, he just got me one for the whole time I was in L.A. for my birthday. But I fell in love with the car, so I just went and bought one. He looked out. Shout-out to Drake. N—s ain't doing s— like that. N—s barely even tell n—s 'Happy birthday.'"

21 even told GQ that was the only gift he received altogether for his birthday that year.

2016: Drake & 21 Savage Drop First Collab With "Sneakin'"

"Sneakin" arrived in a care package shortly after Drake's 30th birthday, alongside "Fake Love" and "Two Birds, One Stone." The bristling track served as the first offering from the 6 God and 21, which drew rave reviews.

Floating over London On Da Track production, Drake crowns himself "The GOAT," and revels in his various rap feuds while riding high coming off of his dismantling of Meek Mill a year prior.

21 dishes out menacing rhymes and gives himself the fitting nickname of The Reaper while letting the world know "Baby, I'm a savage, I ain't a romantic."

2017: "Issa" Leaks Early & Doesn't Make 21's Issa Album

"Issa" was widely expected to land on 21 Savage's July 2017 album of the same name, but the Drake and Young Thug -assisted potential banger didn't end up making the cut. According to engineer Alex Tumay, 21's label didn't believe the tune would receive the proper love from the public since it was leaked in the months leading up to the LP.

Perhaps "Issa" will most widely be remembered for 21 reigniting his brief feud with Tyga and name-dropping his former boo Kylie Jenner. "Issa Kylie, might be Jenner — hold up," he raps.

While it's not on streaming services, "Issa" — the catchphrase 21 made popular from his 2016 VladTV interview — is available on platforms such as SoundCloud and YouTube for fans to enjoy nonetheless.

2018: 21 Savage Says Drake Doesn't Get Enough Respect For Helping Emerging Artists

Drake makes dishing out assists look as easy as NBA legend (and fellow Canadian) Steve Nash did on the basketball court. Drizzy has laid out the tarmac for countless rappers to take off into stardom, from Migos ("Versace") to BlocBoy JB ("Look Alive") — and 21 is appreciative of the opportunity.

"Drake just a genuine-ass good-hearted person," Savage told GQ in 2018. "He did a lot of s— he didn't have to do. He do a lot of s— for up-and-coming rappers, period. I don't think he get his respect for that. Every f—ing year, he pull a new artist up. Ain't no other artist on his level do that s—."

Even 15 years into his decorated career, Drake is still willing to share lucrative real estate on various tracks with emerging artists and lend co-signs that lead to millions of dollars. (Most recently, Drake hopped on rising UK rapper J Hus' "Who Told You.")

2020: Drake Joins 21 Savage & Metro Boomin' For "Mr. Right Now"

After spending 2018 cementing his one-of-a-kind hitmaking ability with Scorpion , Drake joined forces with 21 once again in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic for "Mr. Right Now."

The bawdy track — from 21 Savage and Metro Boomin 's Savage Mode II — sees Drizzy and 21 trade places, with the Slaughter Gang honcho handling hook duties this time around. They ruminate about their love for classic R&B over titillating Metro Boomin production.

"Mr. Right Now" has arguably become most memorable for Drake's revelation about dating SZA when she was just a teenager. "Yeah, said she wanna f— to some SZA, wait/' Cause I used to date SZA back in '08/ If you cool with it, baby, she can still play," he raps.

2021: "Knife Talk" Lands On Drake's Certified Lover Boy

Initially intended for Savage Mode II , Drake and 21 Savage completed "Knife Talk" in a race against the buzzer to make the cut for Drake's 2021 LP, Certified Lover Boy . It became an ominous album standout — and though it never became a single, "Knife Talk" is a prime example of the kind of commercial appeal this duo serves.

Built around Metro Boomin's icy piano keys and a cinematic Plain Pat-sampling backdrop, 21 repeats "gang s—hit that's all I'm on" in a sinister, almost hypnotic flow. Meanwhile, Drake raps with slight paranoia, while sending more subliminal shots in Kanye West 's direction — but ultimately retreats to his mafioso persona.

2021: 21 Savage Admits He Wouldn't Listen To Drake If He Wasn't A Rapper

In Atlanta, there's a contingent of rap fans who believe Future is a bigger artist than Drake. In explaining this hot take to DJ Akademiks in 2021, Savage admitted that before they became friends, he didn't listen to Drake much.

"N—s don't be listenin' to Drake like that where we are," he said. "If I wasn't a rapper, I don't feel like I still would listen to Drake, for real. It's just I'm a rapper so I understand the work he puts in and how hard he goes. When you ain't no rapper, all them statistics don't mean s—."

21 went on to detail how his circle paired hip-hop culture relevance with who was getting played in the night clubs rather than using Billboard chart hits or streaming statistics to support their beliefs.

"A regular street n— don't give a f— about how many times you went No. 1, how many white people listen to your s— because them n-—s, the furthest they think is the club," Savage added. "Who's selling this club out? That's who they think is the biggest n—."

2022: 21 Savage's Manager Reveals His Drake Features Are Free Of Charge

The 6 God and Slaughter Gang bond organically grew to the point they don't even charge each other for features. And they actually never did in the past either, according to 21's manager Justin "Meezy" Williams.

"A lot of the artists, they are low-key peers," Meezy explained during a Clubhouse chat with Druski in early 2022. "So s— just be happening naturally. 21 added that considers Drake family at this point, as Meezy compared the rappers' relationship to what Savage has with Young Nudy, who is his cousin.

"Most of the time, when you bring up Drake or Nudy...if Nudy got a song, ain't nobody even thinking about no paperwork if Savage get on something," Meezy continued. "We know that's going to get handled whatever. It's relationship-based, a lot of times it's like that.

2022: "Jimmy Cooks" Closes Out Drake's Honestly, Nevermind

Drake took his fans to a musical destination they'd never been with his dance-leaning album Honestly, Nevermind . But before haters could react, he brought them to a comfort zone to prove he was still at the top of the rap food chain — and of course, it involved 21.

"Jimmy Cooks" is an instant turn-up anthem, an opposite vibe to their sinister "Knife Talk" collab. The change was effective: "Jimmy Cooks" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, scoring Drake his 11th chart-topper and another win on the scoreboard alongside Savage.

The official music video arrived on 21's 30th birthday that October — the same day a release date for their surprise Her Loss album was revealed — though the joint project was delayed a week due to Drizzy's right-hand producer Noah "40" Shebib contracting COVID-19.

On the heels of "Jimmy Cooks" being crowned the standout moment of Honestly, Nevermind , the Atlanta-bred rapper took a victory lap on Twitter. He confidently compared himself and Drizzy to one of the best duos the NBA has ever seen: Laker legends Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

No words were even needed for the declaration, as Savage tweeted out a still from the "Sneakin'" music video alongside a photo of Shaq and Kobe celebrating their first NBA championship in 2000.

2022: An Album Rollout Filled With Spoofs

America was collectively trolled by the Her Loss rollout, as even some of the most nuanced of fans and news stations across the country were fooled by their fake press run. Not only did they spoof a Vogue cover , but they also pulled off a faux Tiny Desk concert , Saturday Night Live performance, and Howard Stern interview with headline-making "admissions" of Drake's porn fetishes.

It was mission accomplished for Drizzy and 21, who arguably made as big of a splash with the media tour that never was than if they actually did any of that. While Howard Stern saluted the shrewd spoofs, Vogue 's parent company Condé Nast wasn't as thrilled — they filed a lawsuit over trademark infringement against the rappers. (More on that later.)

2022: Her Loss Arrives After A Short Delay

Her Loss arrived on Nov. 4, filled with 16 tracks that served up a little bit of everything. Drake stars front and center, with the OVO boss returning to his braggadocious rap post- Honestly, Nevermind ; though 21 Savage takes more of a backseat, the two pick up where they left off on "Jimmy Cooks" as one of hip-hop's premier tag-teams.

Travis Scott is the lone credited feature on the track list ("Pussy & Millions") while collaborators like Lil Yachty played an integral role in the album's formation as he earned a handful of production credits.

Her Loss debuted atop the Billboard 200, earning Drake his second No. 1 album in less than five months. The album also held plenty of valuable real estate on the Billboard Hot 100, occupying the No. 2 through No. 9 spots on the chart's Top 10 — only for "Rich Flex" to be boxed out by Taylor Swift 's "Anti-hero" for the top slot. (Never shying away from his pettiness, Drake blocked out Swift's name on the Hot 100 when celebrating his chart dominance in an Instagram Story post .)

2022: Drake And 21 Savage Helped Push Each Other's Pen Game

Any co-writing discussion is a touchy subject for Drake fans ever since Meek Mill's ghostwriting allegations in 2015. But that isn't the case with Drizzy and 21, as they admitted they helped each other with their verses for Her Loss during an interview on SiriusXM's Sound42 channel last year.

"I ain't gon cap, Drake wrote some of my verses on this album," the Atlanta rapper candidly revealed. "These facts. I don't give a f— what a n— say, Drake helped me with some of my verses on this album."

Drake returned the favor and gave 21 credit for helping push his pen on the joint project as well, adding, "By the way, you also helped me with s— too.

2023: Drake And 21 Savage Settle Lawsuit Over Fake Vogue Cover

After demanding $4 million in damages, Condé Nast and Drake's high-powered legal teams reached a settlement in February for an undisclosed sum, according to Variety .

The hefty check will allegedly go toward bolstering the company's "ongoing creative output, including Vogue editorial," per a memo sent out by Condé Nast's counsel.

Condé Nast's attorneys claimed that Vogue attempted to "resolve the matter amicably" but their efforts "were repeatedly ignored" by OVO and Slaughter Gang enterprises.

Drizzy and 21's fake Vogue cover duped fans across the globe as the magazine was posted to social media, and a limited number of copies were actually distributed to lucky fans in select U.S. cities. Who knows, it may just make another appearance on the It's All a Blur Tour.

The 2024 GRAMMY nominee for Producer Of The Year is one of hip-hop's most in-demand minds. Between his collab albums with Future and some highly debated beefs with rap's biggest stars, it's the perfect time to revisit the Metro-verse.

Metro Boomin has spent more than a decade redefining rap music. The gloomy, 808-induced trap beats that flood radio airwaves and blare from nightclub speakers are a symbol of his influence. But now, the Atlanta-based superproducer is on one of his biggest musical runs to date.

In April, Metro released the second of two joint albums with Future , hinted at a third release this year, sold out a concert at the Kundalini Grand Pyramids in Egypt, and clinched the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 with " Like That " featuring Kendrick Lamar. He also delivered a first-of-its-kind instrumental diss aimed at Drake called " BBL Drizzy, " accusing the Toronto rapper of going under the knife.

"Karate Chop" (2013)

A 19-year-old Metro crafted his first charting single right before making a life-changing move to Atlanta. With piercing synths and bubbly arpeggios, the song was the lead single for Future’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Honest .

But Metro, a freshman at Morehouse College at the time, wasn’t sold on its success. " I never really like it, " Metro told XXL . " Then every time people would come into the studio, he would always play the record and I was like, ‘Why are you so stuck on this s—? We have way harder records.’ "

But after cranking out a new mix on the original track, " Karate Chop " went on to become his first placement on a major label album. The remix with Lil Wayne further elevated the record and, by virtue, Metro’s profile as a musical craftsman.

" Jumpman " (2015)

Metro mastered the late-summer anthem in 2015 with " Jumpman . " The song was the most notable hit from Drake and Future’s collaborative mixtape, What a Time to Be Alive, and went on to shut down bustling nightclubs and obscure strip joints. And while the record didn’t perform as well as other songs on this list, it secured Future his first Top 20 hit.

The song — which features Metro’s signature bass and a screeching raven sound effect — also saw a streaming boost after an Apple Music commercial featuring Taylor Swift rapping to the song. According to Adweek , the campaign helped generate a 431 percent increase in global sales

What makes " Jumpman " even more special is that a collab between Future, Metro, and Drake may never happen again. Reportedly, the duo is at odds with Drake because the OVO artist decided to link with 21 Savage on Her Loss instead of doing a follow-up project with Future.

"Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" (2016)

" Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 " is the song that set Kanye West ’s album, Life of Pablo, ablaze. Opening with a clip of gospel musician and singer T.L. Barrett’s Father I Stretch My Hands,” Metro’s signature producer tag kicks the record into full gear. The pulsating synthesizers and bouncy percussion match West’s raunchy and sexually explicit lyrics.

Metro’s production received significant praise, with several publications pointing to his contributions on end-of-year listings. After the success of "White Iverson," a young Post Malone was on the hunt for the hottest producers in the rap game. He managed to land Metro, who worked with fellow producers Frank Dukes and the prolific Louis Bell on the triumphant trap record "Congratulations."

On a 2022 episode of the podcast " Full Send ," Metro revealed that the celebratory song was made after watching the world’s greatest athletes eclipse historic feats of their own. "I remember the Olympics was on TV, and just how the music was sounding, it sounded like some champion s—," he said.

"Congratulations" marked Post Malone’s second Top 20 hit following his debut, "White Iverson." The song was certified diamond after totaling more than 11 million combined sales. Today, it remains one of Metro’s biggest achievements.

"Bad and Boujee " (2017)

Fueled by virality and a shoutout from Donald Glover at the 2017 Golden Globes , the Migos and Lil Uzi Vert ’s "Bad and Boujee " landed Metro Boomin his first No. 1 Billboard hit as a producer.

When "Mask Off" dropped in 2017, it scorched the Billboard charts. Hip-hop was flirting with flutes (as heard on songs like Drake’s "Portland" and Kodak Black’s "Tunnel Vision" — another Metro-produced beat) — but "Mask Off" stands out as the biggest song of the short-lived era.

Metro infused jazz-like undertones to perfectly meld the flute lick into the dark and mystic beat. The record led to the remix with Kendrick Lamar, with his verse breathing new life into the already-seismic hit. It’s now certified nine times platinum.

Years after the song’s release, Future said "Mask Off" initially put radio programmers in disarray. In his East Atlanta rapper’s Apple Music documentary The WIZRD, he revealed that the song dropped before Carlton WIlliams’ "Prison Song" sample was officially cleared. "Out of all the songs, ‘Mask Off’ wasn’t even legit," he said. "The s— was on the radio, they’re thinking it’s not a sample, but it got so big they were like, ‘It’s a sample.’"

"Heartless" (2019)

The Weeknd 's "Heartless" is a pop and electro-clash classic that fires on all cylinders. The visuals are atmospheric, the lyrics are ultra-stimulating, and the production — partly handled by Metro — makes for a lasting club banger.

The leading single for The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours, topped the Billboard charts. It marked the Toronto-born crooner’s fourth No. 1 hit and unveiled the depths of Metro’s musical arsenal.

Metro produced four tracks on After Hours : "Faith," "Escape from L.A.," "Until I Bleed Out" and "Heartless." On the latter and in his other collaborations with The Weeknd , James Blake , and Solange , Metro’s creative sorcery was tested. He proved, once again, that he could generate a hit outside the confines of trap music.

" Creepin ’ " ( 2022)

After a solid outing on his first album Not All Heroes Wear Capes , Metro returned with another series of hard-hitting records. His second solo venture, Heroes & Villains , featured John Legend , Don Tolliver , Travis Scott , and other premiere artists. But the biggest song to come out of the star-studded lineup was " Creepin ’" featuring 21 Savage and The Weeknd .

The only single to Metro’s second solo album struck sonic gold. The Weeknd’s flowy vocals overlay the silky and harmonic record, which transitions to a more trap-induced beat once 21 Savage’s verse kicks in. The remake of Mario Winans’ "I Don’t Wanna Know" was a notable departure from Metro’s past singles, which heavily lean on his trap roots. But it still managed to connect with his audience – and even beyond it. " Creepin " peaked at No. 3 on Billboard, which was Metro’s highest-charting solo record up until that point.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023)

Following the success of " Creepin ’" and his other smash singles, Metro extended his creative powers to the film world. He was given the green light to executive produce the soundtrack for Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse .

Metro Boomin told Indie Wire that he crafted songs from rough animations and selected scenes "just to get in the world and the story of Miles [Morales] and what he’s going through," He even exchanged phone calls and texts with the film’s composer Daniel Pemberton to ensure the soundtrack and score were on the same accord.

"Like That" (2024)

"Like That" is easily one of the best beats in Metro’s catalog, and may end up being one of the most memorable. Samples from Rodney O & Joe Cooley’s "Everlasting Bass" and Eazy-E’s 1989 classic "Eazy-Duz-It" shaped the bouncy trap beat, sinister synths, and spine-chilling baseline. But Kendrick Lamar’s verse turned it into a heat-seeking missile.

With the song’s thunderous bass and rapid hi-hats in the background, Kendrick dissed J. Cole and Drake for their recent claims of rap supremacy, particularly on 2023’s "First Person Shooter." The lyrical nuke sparked the Civil War-style rap feud, which led to a seven-song exchange between Kendrick and Drake.

A chance meeting changed Rihanna 's life.

The singer was just 15 years old when she met producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing with his wife in Barbados. Rogers recognized Rihanna's potential, and invited her to an audition in his hotel suite.

Shortly after her 16th birthday, Rihanna left her home country for the U.S. to record a demo, which included her breakthrough hit "Pon de Replay." The demo found its way into Jay-Z 's hands, and Hov signed the teen artist to Def Jam and the label expedited her 2005 debut album, aptly titled Music of the Sun .

"When I left Barbados, I didn't look back," Rihanna told Entertainment Weekly in 2007. "I wanted to do what I had to do [to succeed], even if it meant moving to America."

Twenty years later, Rihanna is a renowned entertainer-turned-mogul. She has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, garnered over 12 billion Spotify streams, achieved 14 Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, and won nine GRAMMY Awards. Even her business ventures have been a massive success, as her Fenty Beauty brand is worth $2.8 billion.

Though it's been close to a decade since Rihanna's last studio album, 2016's ANTI , she reminded the world of her reign with her 2023 Super Bowl halftime show — which also marked her first time taking the stage in five years. Performing hit after hit while unveiling a baby bump, her 13-minute set became one of the most-watched halftime shows of all time with over 121 million viewers.

In honor of Rihanna's 36th birthday on Feb. 20, GRAMMY.com is revisiting the monstrous hits, ambitious projects, brow-raising visuals, and iconic collabs that propelled her to international stardom — and why it's all put her in a league of her own.

A New Island Girl In Town

True to her Carribean heritage, Rihanna's dancehall-inspired debut single "Pon de Replay" earned the then 17-year-old Barbados native her first entry on the Hot 100 at an impressive No. 2. Her official introduction to the world also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart; she boasts 33 on the tally, second behind only the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna .

Follow-up single "If It's Lovin' That You Want" stalled at No. 36 on the Hot 100, but still whetted fans' appetite — as did her debut album, Music of the Sun , which is mostly comprised of dance-pop and dancehall tracks with hints of R&B (like "Willing to Wait"). Plus, her reimagining of Dawn Penn's 1994 reggae classic "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" is still so fun to listen to after all these years.

A mere eight months later, Rihanna's sophomore effort, 2006's A Girl Like Me , arrived to an eager audience. Defying the sophomore slump, she celebrated her first No. 1 with the ubiquitous lead single "SOS," which famously samples Soft Cell's 1981 hit, "Tainted Love." While A Girl Like Me is filled with high-energy, danceable tracks (including the nostalgic "Break It Off" with Sean Paul ), Rihanna's second single was the melodramatic ballad "Unfaithful."

Penned by then-labelmate Ne-Yo , "Unfaithful" peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100. More importantly, it showed a different side to Rihanna, proving that she could channel deep emotion when the performance calls for it. It also marked Rihanna's first time veering away from her "girl next door" image, as the song's subject matter deals with infidelity.

A Girl Like Me contains many fan favorites, from the laid-back "We Ride" to standouts "Dem Haters" and "Kisses Don't Lie." The latter is a reggae-rock hybrid that sounds like a catalyst for some of Rihanna's edgier tunes like "Breakin' Dishes" from 2007's Good Girl Gone Bad era. An Icon In The Making

Rihanna was a familiar face by 2007, but with the arrival of her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad , she graduated from cookie-cutter pop star to bonafide icon.

Produced by Tricky Stewart , the LP's juggernaut lead single "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z skyrocketed to No. 1 in 17 countries. Between striking images of Rihanna's silver-painted silhouette in the accompanying video and the now-iconic "ella-ella, eh, eh, eh" hook, "Umbrella" thrust the then 19-year-old into another stratosphere. Her confident delivery also commanded attention in a way fans and critics hadn't heard before.

The transformative era also birthed the gritty "Shut Up and Drive," on which Rihanna channels her inner rock star. The next two singles cracked the top 10: an affectionate duet with Ne-Yo, "Hate That I Love You," which showed off Rihanna's softer side, and the party-starting, Michael Jackson -sampling "Don't Stop the Music," which cemented her place in the digital era.

Nine months before the release of 2009's Rated R , Rihanna was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown . On the deeply personal album, she translated her pain into art. Through lead single "Russian Roulette" and bitingly catchy anthems "Stupid in Love," "Fire Bomb," "Photographs," "Cold Case Love," and "The Last Song," Rihanna explored her angst and confusion.

But to focus solely on the domestic violence incident undermines Rihanna's artistic vision.

Following three multi-platinum albums in a three-year span, Rihanna's rebranding as a rebel at heart reached its apex. The singer had grown in leaps and bounds while taking musical risks, even penning nine of Rated R 's 13 tracks (she had no writing credits on Good Girl Gone Bad ).

The road to Rihanna's most badass anthems — including "Bitch Better Have My Money" — can be traced back to Rated R . Case in point: Her bravado is loud and clear on "Hard," "Wait Your Turn," and "G4L." Badgal RiRi returned to her dancehall roots on her fifth No. 1 "Rude Boy," which offsets the album's harrowing motif. Final single "Te Amo" didn't chart, but garnered a great deal of attention as the Latin-infused Stargate production depicts Rihanna being enticed by a female love interest.

Rated R showcased Rihanna's undeniable star power, and allowed her to shed her good-girl image once and for all.

A Partygoer's Dream

Following the career-pivoting Rated R , 2010's Loud offered a welcome return to the West Indian artist's earlier sound. The album feels like one big celebration of life, as evidenced by Rihanna's fire-engine red hair and No. 1 singles "Only Girl (In the World)" and "What's My Name?" (the latter of which was Rih's first collaboration with Drake ).

Best described as "Don't Stop the Music" 2.0, the effervescent "Only Girl" marked her eminent return to the dance floor and took home a GRAMMY for Best Dance Recording in 2011. While "What's My Name?" may not outshine Rih and Drizzy's other collabs — including 2011's "Take Care" or 2016's "Work" — the second she sings, "Hey, boy, I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me," it's impossible not to whine your waist to the riddim.

Easily one of Rihanna's most overlooked hits, "Cheers (Drink to That)" is built around an unexpected sample of Avril Lavigne 's 2002 hit "I'm With You," but it works surprisingly well as a party anthem. That same carefree spirit can be heard in the feminist track "Raining Men," which features Nicki Minaj — their first of two collabs, as they joined forces again for "Fly," the final single off the rapper's iconic Pink Friday album.

A playful ode to sadomasochism and bondage, "S&M" contains some of Rihanna's most provocative lyrics: "Sticks and stones may break my bones/ But chains and whips excite me," she declares on the chorus.

Banned in 11 countries upon its release, the accompanying video features Rihanna tied up in pink rope, dancing with a blowup doll, and donning a Playboy bunny-esque costume as damning newsreels about herself flash across the screen. But Rihanna's love of kink made her an even bigger star: "S&M" produced a remix with Britney Spears and earned Rihanna her 10th No. 1 single. With this feat, she became the youngest artist to attain the most chart-toppers in a five-year span.

On "Man Down," Rihanna's patois is in full effect as she takes listeners through a gripping tale about murdering her abuser. "What started out as a simple altercation/ Turned into a real sticky situation," she laments in the opening verse, amplified by siren noises in the background. There's something so satisfying about Rihanna's Bajan accent as she unfurls "Rum-pum-pum-pum" repeatedly over an intensifying reggae beat that would make Sister Nancy and Bob Marley proud.

Nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2021 GRAMMYs, Loud is Rihanna's second most commercially successful LP — and for good reason. It was especially refreshing to see Rihanna emerge from one of the darkest periods of her life as exuberant as ever.

An Unapologetic Queen

Sonically and thematically, Talk That Talk doesn't break new ground, but Rih's DGAF attitude is front and center with plenty of sexual innuendos: Songs like "S&M" and "Rude Boy" seem pretty tame next to "Cockiness (Love It)," which features longtime friend-turned-boyfriend A$AP Rocky on its remix. "Suck my cockiness/ Lick my persuasion/ Eat my poison/ And swallow your pride down, down," she commands in the tantalizing chorus.

At just over a minute long, "Birthday Cake" leaves nothing to the imagination ("It's not even my birthday, but he wanna lick the icing off"). Rihanna controversially released a full-length version in the form of a remix with Chris Brown.

On an album that mostly sees Rihanna singing about her sexual fantasies, "We All Want Love" pulls back the curtain as it reveals her desire for true love: "And some say love ain't worth the buck/ But I'll give my last dime/ To have what I've only been dreaming about."

Her longing continues in "Where Have You Been," which flaunts Rihanna's versatility, flipping Geoff Mack's 1959 country song "I've Been Everywhere" into an infectious EDM banger. Lead single "We Found Love" is undeniably the biggest hit to stem from the Talk That Talk era, spending 10 consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100.

Boosting Calvin Harris ' career, "We Found Love" presents one juxtaposition after the other: dark yet gleaming, euphoric yet sobering, fraught yet hopeful. Rihanna relies on more than just evocative lyrics to tell her story; accompanying synthesizers and alarm bells help to paint a picture as well. Met with controversy, its intense visuals portraying a drug-fueled, toxic relationship — and featuringwhat many speculated was a Chris Brown look-alike — earned RiRi a GRAMMY for Best Long Form Music Video in 2013.

Seven years into an already extraordinary career, 2012's Unapologetic became Rihanna's first album to debut at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. Its lead single "Diamonds" resonated in an equally major way, giving Rih her 12th No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Written by Sia , the power ballad kicked off another exciting era for the Barbadian singer, who unleashes an impassioned vocal performance. One of Rihanna's most precious offerings to date, "Diamonds" emerged as a self-love mantra due to its uplifting "Shine bright like a diamond" chant.

Vocally, Rihanna's strength lies in her ability to evoke raw emotion à la "Stay." Featuring Mikky Ekko , the stripped-down, slow-burning piano ballad narrowly missed the top spot on the Hot 100 but gave Rihanna her 24th top 10 hit, surpassing Whitney Houston 's record of 23 in 2013.

Her swagger is boisterous in "Phresh Out the Runway," "Jump," and strip club anthem "Pour It Up," but "Nobody's Business" really drives home the album's theme of being unbothered. Her decision to join forces with Chris Brown yet again perplexed fans and critics alike, though the track itself is an irresistible production that features a genius interpolation of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel."

Further down the track list, "Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary" is as autobiographical as it gets, and further taps into Rihanna's emotionally vulnerable side. "Mr. Jesus, I'd love to be a queen/ But I'm from the left side of an island/ Never thought this many people would even know my name," she pleads in the seven-minute two-parter.

Unapologetic spawned fewer hit singles compared to Rihanna's previous efforts. Its win for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2014 GRAMMYs, however, proved that Rihanna's reign wasn't letting up anytime soon.

While recording her then-forthcoming album, ANTI , Rihanna delivered what is arguably the single most unapologetic moment of her career: "Bitch Better Have My Money." The backstory is almost inconceivable given Rihanna's awe-inspiring billionaire status, but in 2009, Rihanna faced bankruptcy due to her accountants mishandling her funds — and thus "Bitch" was born six years later in 2015.

With lyrics like "Your wife in the backseat of my brand new foreign car" over a cryptic-sounding trap beat and an accompanying video depicting kidnapping and torturing her debtors, "Bitch" is not for the faint-hearted. The one-off single is so quintessentially Rihanna that it notably kicked off her Super Bowl halftime show.

An In-Demand Collaborator

While bestowing hit after hit on her own, Rihanna generously lent her distinct voice to some of her biggest peers. 2008 marks one of the earliest instances of her Midas touch: She flirts with funk in Maroon 5 's underappreciated "If I Never See Your Face Again" before hopping on T.I .'s "Live Your Life," which shot straight to No. 1 on the Hot 100.

In 2009, Rihanna joined Jay-Z and Kanye West for the militant "Run This Town," sounding defiant as ever in the intro. She was called upon again for West's horn-laden "All of the Lights," flying solo on the hook followed by a star-studded choir that included Alicia Keys , John Legend , Fergie , and Elton John . Both larger-than-life productions won GRAMMYs for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

In between joining forces with Hov and Ye, Rihanna assisted Eminem in "Love the Way You Lie," which struck a nerve with many for its gut-wrenching lyrics shedding a light on abusive relationships. (Rih recorded an equally moving sequel for her Loud album.) Three years later, the two confronted their inner demons in "The Monster," and their musical chemistry scored a GRAMMY in 2015 for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Amid smash collabs, Rihanna and Coldplay 's intricate "Princess of China" number gets lost in the shuffle, but it speaks to her charm as it's the band's first album (2011's Mylo Xyloto ) to feature another artist. Another overlooked jam, her sultry "Can't Remember to Forget You" duet with Shakira sees both stars trade lines about struggling to let go of an undeserving lover.

On paper, a collaboration between Rihanna, Kanye West, and Sir Paul McCartney may seem strange, but the unlikely trio is further proof that opposites attract. Their "FourFiveSeconds" is a pop-folk hybrid with a universal message about carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. It's yet another example of Rihanna's willingness to push past her comfort zone to create something unique.

A year later, Rihanna got listeners on their feet by way of the Taylor Swift -penned "This Is What You Came For" with Calvin Harris. Understated compared to the duo's previous megahits ("We Found Love" and "Where Have You Been"), Harris' signature DJing style and Rih's ethereal vocals are a perfect match.

In 2017, Rih, DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller dropped the song of the summer with "Wild Thoughts," which heavily borrows from Carlos Santana 's 1999 GRAMMY-winning "Maria Maria." It may be DJ Khaled's song, but RiRi owns it from the very moment she utters, "I don't know if you could take it/ Know you wanna see me nakey, nakey, naked." The bop reached No. 2 on the Hot 100.

She spits bars in Kendrick Lamar 's "Loyalty" and "Lemon" with N.E.R.D. , the latter of which comes close to rivaling your favorite rappers' verses: "You can catch me, Rih, in the new La Ferrar'/ And the truck behind me got arms/ Yeah, longer than LeBron/ Just waitin' for my thumb like The Fonz."

No matter what genre Rihanna touches or what artist she links up with, she brings her full self to each session whilst completely immersing herself into the music — taking on different personas to make the collab well worth it.

An Artist Fully Realized

With 13 No. 1s and twice as many top 10 hits under her belt, Rihanna set out to create timeless music instead of chasing a radio-friendly formula with her 2016 magnum opus, ANTI .

But that shift began with 2015's criminally underrated "American Oxygen." Her most political statement at the time, the goosebump-inducing lyrics detail Rihanna's journey as an immigrant, foreshadowing her then soon-to-be massive Fenty Beauty success. "We sweat for a nickel and a dime/ Turn it into an empire," she sings in the chorus.

Released four years after Unapologetic — her longest gap between albums at the time — ANTI illustrated Rihanna's greater desire for quality over quantity. "I needed the music to match my growth," she told Vogue in 2016 about the making of ANTI . "I didn't want to get caught up with anything the world liked, anything the radio liked, anything that I liked, that I've already heard. I just wanted it to be me."

The black-and-white, red paint-splattered album cover signals a rebirth, featuring a real-life image of Rihanna as a child. ANTI lives up to its name in its first 40 seconds, via opening track "Consideration." The minute she declares, "I got to do things my own way, darling," it's apparent that ANTI is not your average Rihanna album.

Lead single "Work" is the closest to pre- ANTI Rihanna on an album that defies expectations. But the dancehall masterpiece is one of a kind for Rih's refusal to water down the Jamaican patois (different from her native language of Bajan Creole) — proving that she is fully aware of her impact as one of the biggest Caribbean-born artists to make it in the U.S.

Many non-understanding listeners described it as "gibberish" at the time. Yet, the general public didn't seem to mind: About a month after its release, "Work" became Rihanna's 14th and longest-running chart-topper on the Hot 100. Weeks later, ANTI became her second LP to top the Billboard 200 chart. Subsequently, Rihanna held the No. 1 spots on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 simultaneously, her second time achieving such an impressive feat.

ANTI is full of pleasant surprises that show off her artistry. Rihanna comes out of left field with the Prince -inspired "Kiss It Better," the album's second single, which sees the superstar falling back on addictive sex that "feels like crack" to justify a destructive relationship. "Same Ol' Mistakes" is a cover of psychedelic rock band Tame Impala 's "New Person, Same Old Mistakes" — her first time remaking another artist's song for her own album since "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" on Music of the Sun . The Western-themed "Desperado" lends itself particularly well to covers by country artists, while the Dido -sampling "Never Ending" conveys the uncertainty she feels about entering a new relationship.

Elsewhere on ANTI , Rihanna drunk dials an ex ("Higher"), compares smoking weed to her lover ("James Joint"), and chastises a guy for getting emotionally attached after their fling ("Needed Me"). The latter song contains one of Rihanna's most empowering lyrics: "Didn't they tell you that I was a savage?/ F— ya white horse and ya carriage," she asserts in the pre-chorus.

Her voice sounds stronger than ever on "Love on the Brain," a doo-wop ballad resembling Etta James . But Rihanna makes it her own thanks to the bluntness of lines like "It beats me black and blue but it f— me so good."

The deep cuts on ANTI aren't merely fillers, and even rival some of the album's biggest hits. For instance, "Sex with Me" is featured on the deluxe edition as a bonus track, but managed to crack the Hot 100 at No. 83 and reach No. 8 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. Furthermore, the deluxe edition consists of 16 tracks, half of which topped the Dance Club Songs chart — smashing the record (previously held by Katy Perry 's Teenage Dream ) for the most No. 1s from a single album.

Accolades aside, ANTI is proof that magic happens when an artist of Rihanna's caliber follows their own instincts in pursuit of creating a body of work — one that can outlast them and continue to inspire generations to come.

Ever since ANTI , Rihanna's devoted fanbase has been begging for a new album, with Rih playfully trolling them with responses like "I lost it" and Instagram captions that read, "Me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it."

Her much-awaited return to music came at the tail end of 2022. The hitmaker twice contributed to the GRAMMY-nominated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack: "Born Again" and "Lift Me Up," the latter of which helped Rihanna score her first Oscar and Golden Globe nominations in 2022 and 2023, respectively. With the glorious "Lift Me Up," she found herself in the top 10 for the first time since 2017's "Wild Thoughts."

A Timeline Of Drake's GRAMMY Moments, From His First Win To Performances & Beefs

Drake's relationship with the GRAMMYs has been all over the map. The five-time GRAMMY winner's comments about the Awards have sparked debate, as has his relationship to submitting his work for consideration.

When Drake attended his first GRAMMY Awards in 2010, he was 23 and hadn’t yet released a debut album. By the time he received his nominations for the 2024 GRAMMYs — Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance and Best Melodic Rap Performance for his collaborations with 21 Savage — he was Spotify’s most-streamed artist of all time, and the holder of more Billboard chart records than we can possibly list in this intro.

In between, his relationship with the Academy’s yearly showcase has been all over the map. He’s lost (mostly), won (five times), and performed alongside some of pop culture’s biggest names. But more to the point, starting in 2017 his public comments about — and during — the GRAMMYs have sparked debate. He’s gone back and forth about submitting his music for consideration, and even went as far as to demand that nominations be retracted (more on that later).

Drake is nominated for Best Rap Album among other awards at the 2024 GRAMMYs . Here is a year-by-year account of the relationship between one of music’s biggest stars and Music’s Biggest Night.

2010 — 52nd GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best Rap Song ("Best I Ever Had"), Best Rap Solo Performance ("Best I Ever Had")

Performances: "Drop the World"/"Forever" with Eminem , Lil Wayne , and Travis Barker

This was Drizzy’s first GRAMMYs, and he was still green enough that he got "reassurance" from Eminem in advance of their performance.

"He was like, 'Man, anytime you need to look over at me, don't get nervous. Just look over at me, man, and I'll give it back to you. Everything will be all right. Don't be nervous.' For him to say that to me — I feel like that was an important moment," Drake told MTV News at the time.

His first two nominations, both for "Best I Ever Had," came before he had even put out his debut album. And as you can see in an interview at the event, the awards circuit was new enough that his mother’s reaction to finding out that Drake was nominated was to text him a bunch of swear words.

"I think she was excited," the rapper joked to a CNN reporter.

2011 — 53rd GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best New Artist, Best Rap Album ( Thank Me Later ), Best Rap Solo Performance ("Over"), Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group ("Fancy" with Swizz Beatz and T.I. )

Performances: "What’s My Name" (with Rihanna )

This is the year that seems to sting Drake the most. Best New Artist was a tough battle, with Drizzy, Justin Bieber , Mumford & Sons , and Florence + the Machine in the mix. All of them lost to Esperanza Spalding , in a major upset .

Drake’s bitterness about the moment lingers to this day. On his most recent album For All the Dogs , he has a surprisingly angry lyric about it: "Four GRAMMYs to my name, a hundred nominations/ Esperanza Spalding was gettin' all the praises/ I'm tryna keep it humble, I'm tryna keep it gracious/ Who give a f— Michelle Obama put you on her playlist?/ Then we never hear from you again like you was taken."

2012 — 54th GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Album Of The Year (Rihanna’s Loud , as featured artist), Best Rap Performance ("Moment 4 Life" with Nicki Minaj ), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("I’m On One" with DJ Khaled , Rick Ross , and Lil Wayne; "What’s My Name" with Rihanna)

This was Drake’s first year as a presenter, so he appears to be moving up in the award show hierarchy. But that doesn’t help him with hardware — he still goes home empty-handed.

This is also the time that he has multiple nominations in the same category (in this case, two in Best Rap/Sung Collaboration), which is also a trend that would repeat throughout the years.

2013 — 55th GRAMMY Awards

Wins: Best Rap Album ( Take Care )

Nominations: Best Rap Performance ("HYFR [Hell Ya F—king Right]" with Lil Wayne), Best Rap Song ("The Motto" with Lil Wayne)

He finally wins! Drake gets his first victory (for Best Rap Album). Also, he is the only Canadian to win that year (sorry, Loreena McKennitt!) However, the big moment wasn't telecast and Drizzy hadn’t yet arrived at the ceremony. In a charming interview from later in the night, Drake recalled jumping out of his car in the middle of traffic to celebrate. There’s also a video of him receiving his GRAMMY in the mail after the fact, which is notable for him immediately taking a celebratory drink from the trophy.

2014 — 56th GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Album Of The Year ( Kendrick Lamar ’s good kid, m.A.A.d city , as featured artist), Best Rap Album ( Nothing Was the Same ), Best Rap Performance ("Started From the Bottom"), Best Rap Song ("Started From the Bottom"; "F—in’ Problems" with ASAP Rocky , 2 Chainz , and Kendrick Lamar)

Drake gets five nominations — and again two in one category — with no wins. It’s hard to pinpoint where the tide might have turned regarding the rapper’s feelings about the institution, but this ceremony may well have been it.

2015 — 57th GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Album Of The Year ( Beyoncé 's Beyoncé , as featured artist), Best Rap Performance ("0 to 100 / The Catch Up"), Best Rap Song ("0 to 100 / The Catch Up"), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("Tuesday" with ILoveMakonnen)

Once again Drake gets an Album Of The Year nomination…for someone else’s album. It’s now the third time this has happened, following Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar. Still, four nominations during a year with no new album is impressive, and shows just how much of a fixture The Boy has become in the pop firmament at this point.

2016 — 58th GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best Rap Album ( If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late ), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("Only" with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown ), Best Rap Performance ("Back to Back"; "Truffle Butter" with Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne), Best Rap Song ("Energy")

From four nominations in 2015 to five this year, tying his personal best from 2014. They are all for rap-related awards, perhaps because Drake didn’t release a "proper" album that might have ended up in one of the big categories — If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late had a convoluted rollout.

2017 — 59th GRAMMY Awards

Wins: Best Rap/Sung Performance ("Hotline Bling"), Best Rap Song ("Hotline Bling")

Nominations: Album Of The Year ( Views ), Best Rap Album ( Views ), Record Of The Year ("Work" with Rihanna), Best Pop Duo/Group Performance ("Work" with Rihanna), Best R&B Song ("Come and See Me" with PartyNextDoor), Best Rap Performance ("Pop Style" with The Throne)

The results of this year marked the beginning of Drake’s public issues with the GRAMMYs. Drake didn't attend the ceremony and, in an interview just after the ceremony, he pushed back against his own victory, upset that "Hotline Bling," a song with no rapping, won two rap awards.

"Last night at that awards show, I’m a Black artist," he said. "I’m apparently a rapper, even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song. The only category that they can manage to fit me in is in a rap category, maybe because I’ve rapped in the past or because I’m Black."

He was also upset that his hit "One Dance" wasn’t nominated in any general categories.

"There’s pop obligations that [the Recording Academy] have," he said. "And I fluked out and got one of the biggest songs of the year, that is a pop song, and I’m proud of that. I love the rap world and I love the rap community, but I write pop songs for a reason. I want to be like Michael Jackson .

"I won two awards last night, but I don’t even want them for some reason," he continued. "It just feels weird. It feels like you’re purposely trying to alienate me or pacify me by handing me something, putting me in that [rap] category because it’s the only place you can figure out where to put me."

Perhaps because of these issues — it was never confirmed — he never submitted his 2018 project More Life for GRAMMY consideration. Regardless, he ended up with no nominations the following year.

2019 — 61st GRAMMY Awards

Wins: Best Rap Song ("God’s Plan")

Nominations: Album Of The Year ( Scorpion ), Best Rap Performance ("Nice for What"; "Sicko Mode" with Travis Scott , Swae Lee, and Big Hawk), Best Rap Song ("Sicko Mode" with Travis Scott, Swae Lee, and Big Hawk), Record Of The Year ("God’s Plan"), Song Of The Year ("God’s Plan")

This was a year that heightened the Drake/Recording Academy tension even further. First, he turned down a chance to perform during the ceremony. And then, during his acceptance speech for Best Rap Song, Drizzy let awards shows have it.

"We play in an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport," he began. "Look, the point is, you already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown. You’re already winning, you don’t need this right here."

The broadcast went to commercial while he was still talking, something that fans thought was an intentional slight. The Academy said otherwise.

"During Drake’s speech there was a natural pause during his speech and at that moment the producers did assume that he was done and then cut to commercial," the Academy said in an official statement. "However the producers did speak with Drake following his speech and did offer him to come back on stage to finish whatever his thoughts were, but Drake said he was happy with what he said and didn’t have anything to add to it."

2020 — 62nd GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best R&B Song ("No Guidance" with Chris Brown), Best Rap Song ("Gold Roses" with Rick Ross)

Drake didn’t publicly react to his two losses this year, but he did speak out on a friend’s behalf. The superstar was upset that The Weeknd didn’t receive any nominations, and said so in an Instagram story. He went far enough as to say that awards shows like the GRAMMYs "may no longer matter" to up-and-coming artists.

"I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after," Drake wrote. "It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can’t change their ways.

"The other day I said @theweeknd was a lock for either album or song of the year along with countless other reasonable assumptions and it just never goes that way," he continued. "This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come."

He went on to list artists he believed should be been nominated: Lil Baby , Pop Smoke, Party Next Door, Popcaan, and "too many missing names to even name."

2021 — 63rd GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best Rap Song ("Laugh Now Cry Later" with Lil Durk ), Best Melodic Rap Performance ("Laugh Now Cry Later" with Lil Durk), Best Music Video ("Life Is Good" with Future )

Drake again misses out on everything he’s nominated for, which might have something to do with what happened the following year.

2022 — 64th GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best Rap Album ( Certified Lover Boy ), Best Rap Performance ("Way 2 Sexy" with Future and Young Thug) - Both withdrawn

Things came to a boiling point in 2022. Drake was nominated for two awards, but his management asked the Academy to remove the nominations, which they did.

2023 — 65th GRAMMY Awards

Wins: Best Melodic Rap Performance ("Wait For U" with Future and Tems )

Nominations: Album Of The Year (Beyoncé’s Renaissance , as songwriter), Best Rap Song ("Wait For U" with Future and Tems, "Churchill Downs" with Jack Harlow )

Drake didn’t submit any material for GRAMMY consideration this time around, but it didn’t stop him from receiving four nominations, and winning once.

There was one other unexpected Drake-related Grammy moment this year as well. Several days before the ceremony, he made a speech at the Black Music Collective’s Recording Academy Honors event praising one of the evening’s honorees, Lil Wayne. Even when paying tribute to his mentor, Drake seemed to be referencing his ongoing issues with the Academy. His knowing winks to the camera whenever he said the phrase “Black Music Collective” appeared to be a nod to his ongoing complaints that contemporary Black artists were being ignored by the Grammys.

2024 — 66th GRAMMY Awards

Nominations: Best Rap Album ( Her Loss with 21 Savage), Best Rap Song ("Rich Flex" with 21 Savage"), Best Rap Performance ("Rich Flex" with 21 Savage), Best Melodic Rap Performance ("Spin Bout U" with 21 Savage)

In a sign that a change might be underway in the often-stormy relationship between Drake and the GRAMMYs, the rapper actually submitted material for nomination for the 2024 GRAMMYs. His collaboration with 21 Savage, Her Loss , was put up for Album of the Year (which it didn’t get a nom for) and Best Rap Album (which it did). The songs "Rich Flex" and "Spin Bout U" were also offered up in multiple categories, and each ended up with nominations.

Soulja Boy weighed in on Drake’s numerous beefs on Tuesday (July 16). The Chicago native hopped on Twitter, admitting to being “disappointed” by the Views artist’s choice of allies.

“Doing all them weak a** songs with them [n**gas] look where it got [you]. None of them [n**gas] you [collaborated] with or took on tour had [your] back,” he wrote.

Soulja Boy’s jabs are seemingly aimed at 21 Savage, J. Cole and possibly even Lil Wayne, all of whom served as co-headliners on Drake’s “ It’s All A Blur Tour .” In May, the London-born rapper emphasized wanting to stay neutral in his Her Loss collaborator’s feud with Metro Boomin. “Metro [is] my brother, and Drake [is] my brother. Those n**gas are going to figure that s**t out eventually,” he said.

On the other hand, Lamar targeted both J. Cole and Drake on “ Like That ” from Future and Metro Boomin’s WE DON’T TRUST YOU . The Born Sinner creator, who teamed up with the self-coined 6 God on “First Person Shooter” months earlier, fired back with “7 Minute Drill.” However, he wound up apologizing at 2024’s Dreamville Festival.

“I want to say right now tonight, how many people think Kendrick Lamar is one of the greatest motherf**kers to ever touch a f**kin’ microphone? Dreamville, y’all love Kendrick Lamar, correct? As do I,” he shared during his headlining set . He then added, “I pray that my n**ga really didn’t feel no way, and if he did, my n**ga, I got my chin out.”

Lil Wayne’s place in the Drake-Lamar beef is still open to debate. On Sunday (July 14), he altered the Compton lyricist’s “Not Like Us” lyrics to “T hey don’t like us ” before performing the Toronto artist’s “The Motto.” That night, he also wore an OVO chain.

It’s also worth mentioning that Soulja Boy has gotten into spats with both 21 Savage and J. Cole at one point. His issues with the “Bank Account” hitmaker stemmed from an incident with Metro Boomin, in which Big Draco dissed the producer’s late mother.

Drake Releases Three New Songs Including ‘SOD,’ ‘Circadian Rhythm’ and ‘No Face’ Featuring Playboi Carti

Just before the weekend hit, Drake surprise-released three songs including “Circadian Rhythm,” “SOD” and “No Face” featuring Playboi Carti via his Instagram burner account @plottttwistttttt.

Fans may recognize “SOD” as “Supersoak,” a track that streamer Kai Cenat premiered last month and initially featured a verse from Lil Yachty. Even before its official release, it caused issues after Yachty tried to clear a sample from Mr. HotSpot that was included on the track, but was denied usage unless the rappers did a clean version of the song per his religious beliefs. Now, Yachty has been entirely removed from the track for its official release. Some fans suspected there may have been issues between the two brewing over the past few weeks after they noted that Yachty unfollowed Drake on Instagram.

Becky G is heading back to the Valley this year as part of the 14 stops she'll make during her recently announced "Casa Gómez: Otro Capítulo Tour 2024."

The tour will kick off on Oct. 11 at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago and conclude at the Park in San Diego on Nov. 17.

Her Phoenix stop is scheduled for Oct. 27 at the Arizona Financial Theater, where she'll grace fans with new singles from her latest studio album, Esquinas, through which she pays tribute to her roots, referencing the intersection between her American style and Mexican upbringing.

"I’m so excited to share this with you guys … I can’t wait to sing and laugh and dance and cry with you guys again muuuuuy pronto," she wrote on her Instagram account.

Becky G will also be expected to perform more of her regional Mexican music hits, including “Chanel” with Peso Pluma, “2ndo Chance” with Iván Cornejo, “Mercedes” with Oscar Maydon and “Por el contrario.”

Who is Becky G?

Rebecca Marie Gomez, better known as Becky G , was born on March 2, 1997, in Inglewood, California. Of Mexican grandparents and American parents, the 26-year-old singer and actress has managed to position herself among renowned Latin artists in the U.S.

Becky G launched her career when she did a cover of Kanye West and JAY-Z's “Otis,” reaching the ears of Dr. Luke, who signed her to his label Kemosabe Records a year later. Her single “Shower” made her one of the big revelations of 2014.

She has since collaborated with major Latin artists like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, El Alfa and Karol G.

Her first hit in Spanish was “Mayores,” which she recorded and released in 2017 with Bad Bunny. Her Spanish-language success continued with “Mala Santa” in 2019. In 2022, she had another big hit alongside Karol G, when “MAMIII” was among the most listened-to singles.
