Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

See the Fjords on a Norwegian Mail Boat Cruise

The dramatic 2,000-kilometre Norwegian coastline is one of Europe’s great attractions, and for more than 100 years the popular Hurtigruten mail boat cruise in  Norway  has been offering incredible fjord scenery to locals and travellers alike. In fact, Lonely Planet called the Hurtigruten cruise along the Norwegian coast "The World's Most Beautiful Voyage". So it’s no surprise that Hurtigruten mail boat cruises in Norway are among the most popular tours offered by Nordic Visitor.

Nordic Visitor specialises in tailor-made fjord tours in Norway that include overnights on the Hurtigruten cruise line. Our Norway tour packages are nearly all-inclusive , meaning that we handle all of your cruise reservations, accommodations both at sea and on land as well as as any travel via train or rental car.

Here are just a few of the things you can experience on coastal Hurtigruten cruises in Norway:

  • Walk around the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund and admire its beautiful architecture.
  • Sail up the Geirangerfjord , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, past tumbling waterfalls.
  • Stroll past the colourful wharf houses in Trondheim , the ancient former capital of Norway.
  • See the beautiful Lofoten Islands , famous for its jagged peaks and quaint fishing villages.

You also have your choice of different cabin options and exciting guided shore excursions when booking a Nordic Visitor Hurtigruten tour.

Customisations for a Hurtigruten post boat voyage

The best thing about Hurtigruten postal ferry cruises in Norway is the hop-on, hop-off style of travel. You can opt to embark and disembark at ports other than Bergen or Kirkenes, so you can enjoy a shorter cruise in addition to travel by car or train.

A most popular addition to Hurtigruten cruises in Norway is the Norway in a Nutshell® train journey , which connects Oslo to Bergen via the Flåm Railway. Give yourself at least 8 days in Norway if you wish to enjoy a train-cruise combo trip. We can also customise any itinerary to include trips to neighbouring Scandinavian countries.

Hurtigruten is much-loved for its heritage, but it’s also possible to travel the same route on a modern Havila ship. Ask your travel consultant about exploring Norway on a Havila voyage .

— COASTAL VOYAGES

Quick facts about hurtigruten.

  • Hurtigruten was founded in 1893 to transport cargo, mail and passengers between coastal towns
  • In the old days, Norway’s fjords made road travel difficult and sometimes dangerous
  • Hurtigruten means “fast route” in Norwegian
  • Today the cruise line is considered a leader in the “slow travel” movement

Well planned tour

The tour was well planned. Travel was easy. Hotels in perfect locations. Even when there was a problem, the emergency number led to an easy resolution. 5/5 trip. Exceeded my expectations!

Enjoyed the experience

The Northern lights adventure was successful. Our guide made every effort to help us se them. Our guides on the snowmobile tour were helpful and fun. Food was great. My grandson misplaced his cell phone and everyone helped look for it. We enjoyed the whole experience.

The tour was EXCELLENT! The sign up was EASY! When a train derailment changed our travel plans over the Easter holiday weekend someone at the office answered the phone and helped us. This was THE BEST tour we have ever taken and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Amazing experience

We really didn't know what to expect, only booking a trip to Norway because of a wedding in Denmark the following week. It was an amazing experience. Everything worked well. Accomodations were clean, comfortable and cultural at the same time. When we hit a snag along the way, our consultant was available by phone. We'd recommend this trip, and Nordic Visitor, to others.

An amazing trip!

Ellen, our travel consultant, helped me plan the perfect trip to Norway! The hotel was nice and had free breakfast that was delicious! Camp Tamok was awesome and the dog sledding and snowmobiling was so much fun. There was a little hiccup when the catamaran tour changed to another boat and we didn't know, but I called the emergency line and was helped right away. The northern lights chase was awesome and we finally got to see the lights on the last night. It was an amazing trip!

What an experience!

WOW, WOW, WOW!! What a trip, what an experience. Everything was perfect and so accurate! From planing to the end of the trip everything was on time, and we really enjoy everything. The hotels, trains, buses, boat! Visiting Norway is a dream! The cities, people, everything!

Highly recommend

Ellen was amazing throughout the booking process and answering all my questions. The trip was incredible. I could do more than what I wanted and I could taylor it to meet my needs. I will highly recommend you see Norway with Nordic Visitor's help.

Super well planned

Recently took one of the tours including Norway in a Nutshell that included an ambitious amount of travel - on trains, boats, buses, airplanes - 6 different cities/hotels (including on the Hurtigruten Coastal Express) - and everywhere we went we were expected and welcomed. The materials Ellen sent ahead of time helped us be prepared and make the most of our trip. Super well planned - wouldn't hesitate to use Nordic Visitor services for another trip.

Exactly what we wanted

Easy instructions. It was exactly what we wanted. Very easy to navigate. Our travel consultant was responsive and helpful. We had one complication which was solved right away. I would recommend highly.

Everything was seamless

I travel quite often but this was my first time using a travel consultant. Annie responded quickly to all my questions and worked with me to make several changes to the suggested itinerary. Everything was seamless and there were no issues in the planning or while on the trip. There was an unforeseen delay on a train and the agency called us to let us know the updated timetables and advice on how to proceed since we would be missing our original connection. My mom and I had a wonderful time on the trip. I would highly recommend Nordic Visitor, it is definitely worth your while.

Memorable trip

Our travel consultant, Juliana was great and ensured we were able to do the activities we had selected and also answered all our questions, helped with reservations etc. our biggest concern was managing the logistics and making every train, bus, cruise, flight etc but although tiring it all worked out really well. we chose the luxury accomodation and were not disappointed, even the glamping tent was great. What made the trip memorable was the activities, and all were high quality, well run and very professional.

Norway is beautiful

It's a great experience to use the consultant, hassle free. My travel consultant, Elini has been very helpful and responsive. The hotel we stayed are all very near to the train station. Norway is beautiful with the great nature.

NORTHERN LANDS AND LEGENDS

Norway cruises.

Explore Viking Age history and jaw-dropping fjords.

In Norway, you'll admire everything from the deep blue fjords to the snow-capped mountain peaks. Cruise to Norway and head to the inner end of the stunning Aurlandsfjorden to join a fairy tale ride along the Flam Railway, one of the steepest railway tracks in the world. In Honningsvag, situated above the Arctic Circle, admire the views across the sea to the Svalbard Islands and the North Pole, and watch the indigenous Sami people herd raucous reindeer through the area. Stroll through Bergen's Bryggen neighborhood, with its medieval cobblestone alleyways and colorfully painted houses, or go shopping in the small boutiques that offer handmade Sami crafts. Whether you're looking to feast on traditional Nordic king crab or hoping to see the massive glacial walls of the Svalbard Islands, you can do it all in this northern paradise.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Prepare for Nordic Adventure

As an Arctic wonder, Norway offers adventure, attractions and charm all year round.

If you visit the country in the summer, you'll avoid the chilly temperatures, you'll be able to witness the Midnight Sun and will find that more attractions are open. In winter, however, you'll be able to see a northern wonderland covered in a magical layer of snow, which you can enjoy by snow shoeing, skiing or snowboarding. Between late September and late March, it's dark from early afternoon until late morning, and this is the best time to see the Northern Lights.

No matter what season you decide to visit, just remember the Norwegian saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." While the climate between different areas of the country varies widely, the Norwegian winters are long and cold in general. If you wear the right clothes, though, you'll be just fine.

Into the fjords

In the summer, from June to August, we set course for UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord *. This is a protected and preserved piece of paradise with towering mountain cliffs and waterfalls like the famous Seven Sisters cascading into the fjord.

Geirangerfjord is replaced by Hjørundfjord for the following sailings: 2024: 16th June, 27th June, 8th July, 19th July, 30th July, 10th August, 21st August 2025: 1st June, 12th June, 23rd June, 4th July, 15th July, 26th July, 6th August, 17th August, 28th August

From mid-June to late August, the streets and gardens here will be adorned with the sight and scent of roses of all shades, living up to Molde’s nickname as ‘The City of Roses’.

Nidaros Cathedral is one of Trondheim's most famous sights

City of Kings and Palaces

This section of the voyage sees us enter the Trøndelag region of Norway, marked by crumpled hills, fields dotted with farmsteads, and low-lying coastal settlements.

Magical, medieval, and modern

Founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim today is Norway’s third largest city and a mix of historic buildings and a vibrant student population.

You’ll have three hours to explore Trondheim and its array of highlights, either by yourself or on one of the optional excursions we offer.

A must-see site of the city is Nidaros Cathedral, nicknamed “Norway’s Notre Dame” for its Gothic style and considered the most sacred building in all of Norway. Next door to the cathedral is the Archbishop’s Palace where Norway’s crown jewels are on display.

Nearby, the old city bridge Gamle Bybro sits over Nid River, marking the entrance to the old Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. The neighbourhood’s colourful wooden wharves propped up on stilts by the river’s edge now house a variety of eateries. Up from Bakklandet is Kristiansten Fort which has beautiful panoramas of the city and fjord.

Back on board

In the afternoon, the ship sails northwest, passing the ochre-coloured Kjeungskjær Lighthouse, islets, and rocky reefs. After that, we head towards charming Rørvik .

Into the Arctic

We cross the Arctic Circle early in the morning, beginning your Arctic tour of Norway. We mark the moment with a traditional ceremony that’s sure to wake you up.

Above the Arctic Circle, you can see the sun 24 hours a day in summer, while in winter, your chances of seeing the Northern Lights greatly improve.

Forces of nature

At 10:00, we call into Ørnes , near to Norway’s second-largest glacier, Svartisen. The pier here is popular for the Love Bench where sweethearts have declared their lasting romance with a padlock.

We then sail to  Bodø , the second largest city in Northern Norway, overlooked by the Børvass peaks. Admire fabulous street art or join an optional boat excursion to Saltstraumen, the world’s most powerful maelstrom.

Welcome to Lofoten

That afternoon, the ship enters the Lofoten archipelago. The 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall is a stunning sight on the horizon, as if there to welcome us.

Stamsund is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the islands and busiest between January and April when Arctic cod, known locally as skrei , swim from the Barents Sea in the north down to Vestfjord to spawn.

Come evening, when you see rows of traditional fisherman’s huts on stilts, known as rorbuer , you’ve arrived in the pretty harbour of Svolvær , the main town of the Lofoten Islands.

Capital of the Arctic

We dock into Harstad  just after 07:00. You can go for a peaceful early morning stroll around town.

The ship will then continue to Finnsnes which connects the beautiful island of Senja via the impressive Gisund Bridge. Keep on the lookout for a variety of seabirds with several colonies nearby, including puffins.

Gateway to the Arctic

We then sail to the historic Arctic exploration capital of  Tromsø where you’ll have four hours to explore the city or join an optional excursion.

Along the waterfront you’ll find Polaria, a centre exhibiting environmental research in the Arctic with a small aquarium. Take your pick from the many shops and restaurants in the city centre, including Mack Brewery and favourite local watering hole Ølhallen pub. There are also cafés offering delicious cinnamon buns where baristas create innovative coffee art. Across the fjord from where the ship docks, you should be able to see the iconic Arctic Cathedral with its beautiful stained-glass mosaic.

Leaving Tromsø in the early evening, we head north for the trading post of Skjervøy , founded in 1622. On our way, we’ll pass the Lyngen Alps which rise majestically from the sea.

The ship reaches the town of Hammerfest on the island of Kvaløya early in the morning. In summer, the island has herds of reindeer migrating here in their thousands.

You’ll know we’ve reached Havøysund when you see the wind turbines of the landmark Havøyglaven wind farm which produces enough electricity to power 6,000 local homes.

At the top of Europe

We arrive at Honningsvåg mid-morning, portal to the North Cape where a globe monument marks the top of continental Europe. An optional excursion will take you to North Cape from Honningsvåg by bus, passing herds of reindeer on the way, depending on the season.

Sámi heartlands

Near the entrance of Kjøllefjord village, look out for the striking, building-like rock formation Finnkirka, an ancient sacrificial site once used by the indigenous Sámi. You can join an optional summer excursion to meet local Sámi, learn about their life reindeer herding, and listen to joik folk songs.

Continuing north

We reach our northernmost port of call, Mehamn , in the evening. If visiting in the months of February and March, you might spot tons of cod drying on outdoor wooden racks called hjell , mainly destined for export.

The ship then sets off for Berlevåg . On the way, we pass the tall Slettnes Lighthouse, the northernmost mainland lighthouse on Earth.

A snowmobile excursion under the Midnight Sun in Kirkenes

Norway’s Eastern Edge

We call at Båtsfjord and Vardø in the night, before docking at Vadsø early in the morning.

Looking to the skies

The area around Vadsø is one of the most scenic and popular birdwatching spots in the Arctic, lying directly under the migration path of birds flying from east to west. Watch for hooded crows and sea eagles.

Near the Norwegian border

By the time we reach Kirkenes after breakfast, you’ll have travelled further east than St. Petersburg and Istanbul. You’ll have a choice of optional excursions to explore the area.

Journey’s turning point

Kirkenes is where your Norwegian coastal cruise changes direction and the ship heads south. Several of the places we sailed to during the night we’ll now see during the day.

Back in Vardø , you can visit the solemn Witches’ Monument and the star-shaped Vardøhus Fortress, built in 1737. The northernmost fortification of any kind, it remains a part of the military to this day.

We return to the small, bustling port of Båtsfjord and then make for Berlevåg for late evening, crossing paths with the northbound ship.

An aerial view of the Norwegian port town of Hammerfest

From the Top of Europe

We make stops at Mehamn and Kjøllefjord during the night before early morning visits to Honningsvåg and Havøysund .

The northernmost city

In the early afternoon, you’ll spend time in Hammerfest , which has the largest population on a list of the world’s northernmost settlements.

See the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column, shop for souvenirs at the Polar Bear Society, or take the path behind the town to the viewpoint atop Mount Salen.

Mountains and marine mammals

We continue cruising Norway’s coastline south to Øksfjord and then to Skjervøy , surrounded by mountain peaks. We’ve been docking at this vital fishing port since 1896.

If you’re visiting in winter, you might spot orcas and humpback whales that gather here to feed on herring.

As we make our way to Tromsø , you might also glimpse views of the Lyngen Alps which boast some of the highest peaks in all of Norway.

Midnight magic

We dock at Tromsø just before midnight. In the summer months, you can stroll around the still busy city in glorious 24-hour daylight.

MS Trollfjord sailing in Trollfjord in Norway

High Peaks and Idyllic Islands

Today, you’ll be exploring the archipelagos of Lofoten and Vesterålen, real highlights of our Norway scenic route.

After Finnsnes early in the morning, the ship calls at Harstad where the white-washed Trondenes Church, the world’s northernmost medieval stone church, sits on the peninsula.

Next is our smallest port of call Risøyhamn and then Sortland where the landscape slowly transforms from hills to 1,000-metre-high mountains.

Our birthplace

Stokmarknes is where Captain Richard With began The Coastal Express in 1893. Visit Hurtigrutemuseet, a ship-in-a-bottle building that chronicles our legacy, centred around retired ship MS Finnmarken from 1956.

A ship-sized fjord

Sailing along Raftsund, the Captain may choose to take the ship into tiny Trollfjord if weather permits. The mountain walls will look so close you’ll think you can reach out and brush them! To exit the fjord, the ship will rotate 180 degrees on the spot, then sail back out. Remember to look out for sea eagles here too.

Leaving Lofoten

We reach Svolvær in the evening. The huge mountain that sits above the town is named the Svolvær Goat due to its supposed resemblance. See if you agree!

The ship then sails for Stamsund , eventually passing the giant granite cliffs of the Lofoten Wall.

Finnsnes : 04:20 - 04:40

Harstad : 08:00 - 08:30

Risøyhamn : 10:45 - 11:00

Sortland : 12:30 - 13:00

Stokmarknes : 14:15 - 15:15

Svolvær : 18:30 - 20:30

Stamsund : 22:15 - 22:30

A woman trying a spoon of cod liver oil during Hurtigruten's Arctic Circle crossing

A Landscape of Trolls

The ship calls at Bodø in the small hours of the morning and then Ørnes at 7am. We then cross over the Arctic Circle just after breakfast. Commemorate the moment with a tradition of tasting a spoonful of good ol’ Norwegian cod liver oil!

We make a short stop at Nesna before sailing on to Sandnessjøen , gateway to the magnificent Helgeland Coast.

Legend has it…

Admire the stunning landscape of the Seven Sisters mountain range, with peaks up to 1,100m high. The tale goes that seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing from an unwanted suitor, got caught out as the sun rose, turning them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today.

You’ll also not want to miss views of Torghatten Mountain , with the distinctive hole in it. There is a local legend as to why and how this mountain came to have such a hole. Make sure you ask your Coastal Experience about it!

We reach Brønnøysund mid-afternoon. Explore the bustling marina on a walk along Havnegata. In the centre of town is Brønnøy Church: a stone church in the Neo-Gothic style dating back to 1870.

Our last stop of the day is the cosy fishing port of Rørvik in the picturesque Vikna archipelago.

Bodø : 02:30 - 03:30

Ørnes : 06:25 - 06:35

Nesna : 10:25 - 10:35

Sandnessjøen : 11:45 - 12:15

Driving the Atlantic Road on a sunny day

Coastal Communities and Klippfisk

Spend the morning in Trondheim, then sail past beautiful island scenery and some of Norway’s smallest communities before exploring Kristiansund and Molde.

Capital of the Viking Age

Stroll around Trondheim in the early morning as the city wakes. Visit the sacred Nidaros Cathedral, resting place of St. Olav. Then, walk to Gamle Bybro bridge for a photo opportunity over Nid River.

Treat yourself to quality coffee and a Nordic patisserie in one of the Bakklandet district’s many chic cafés then walk up to Kristiansten Fort for great views of Norway’s third largest city.

Dealing in dried cod

We dock at Kristiansund ’s harbour in the late afternoon. The town is spread over three islands and known for being Norway’s “Bacalao Capital” for the salted cod that’s dried on the surrounding cliffs, called klippfisk in Norwegian.

Take a walk around the cobblestone streets of the old town and tour the lively port. You can also head up to the old watchtower at Varden viewpoint for a lovely panorama.

Peaks and petals

The penultimate port of the day is Molde where you can spot the tops of the Romsdal Alps. Nicknamed “The City of Roses”, flowers should be in bloom between mid-June and late August.

Time in port

Trondheim : 06:30 - 09:30

Kristiansund : 16:30 - 17:30

Molde : 21:15 - 21:45

A Hurtigruten ship leaves the ferry terminal in Bergen

Until Next Time

Our Norwegian coastal cruise together, at least this time, will reach its end later today. During the previous night, we’ll call at Ålesund and Torvik . On our approach to Måløy , you might catch a glimpse of the northbound Coastal Express if you’re up early enough.

Morning highlights

You’ll have a chance to glimpse Nordfjord, under the enormous Jostedal Glacier, mainland Europe’s largest.

The ship then docks at Florø in the morning where you can take in the harbour and marina.

The home stretch

Leaving Florø, you’ll spot Stabben Lighthouse, a favourite subject for photographers. There’s also stunning views to enjoy as we cross the mouth of Sognefjord, the longest and widest fjord in the whole of Norway.

As we reach our final port in the afternoon, the ship will navigate through the last islands and skerries of our Norway scenic route, and sail down Hjeltefjord to arrive into Bergen.

Explore more of Norway

Sadly, it’s time to say farewell to the Captain, crew, and fellow guests.

But your journey doesn’t have to stop after disembarkation. We offer a Bergen sightseeing tour as well as a range of post-voyage programmes that you can add to your trip, including seeing Sognefjord by train or a tour of Oslo.

Ålesund : 00:30 - 01:20

Torvik : 02:35 - 02:45

Sights to see during a Norway cruise

There is a lot to discover in the towns along the Norwegian coast. After arriving at the Lysefjord, you can hike on the 600 metre high Preikestolen and enjoy the breathtaking views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains from above. If you are looking for a special thrill, you can dare a basejump here. In the Oslofjord , on the other hand, the capital city with its museums attracts visitors. The Bygdøy Peninsula is home to the Norwegian Maritime Museum - Norsk Maritime Museum  - and the Vikingskipshuset Museum with Viking ships from the 9th century. The 371-metre-high Holmenkollen mountain offers a magnificent view of the fjord and the city , The time-honoured ski jumping facility is not only known to Winter sports enthusiasts. In the associated ski museum, you can also learn about the history of Winter sports in Norway - and especially in Oslo. --> Oslo cruises

If your cruise ship takes you on a journey through the unique Norwegian fjord landscape in Flåm , you should not miss a trip on the Flåm Railway. Along the route you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains and the train stops at the mighty Kjosfossen waterfall for a photo stop.

If you’re a nature lover, you're in the right place on a Norway cruise anyway. With a little luck, in the evening in Tromsø you will be able to watch the special plays of light in the sky as the Northern Lights illuminate the night. If you want to travel against the midnight sun, the Norway cruise is just as exciting for you. In Honningsvåg -  the northernmost point of Europe - drive to the North Cape . There you can find an informative visitor centre or you can head to the bird cliff near Gjesværstappan, where countless puffins, cormorants and gannets can be admired. --> North Cape cruises

The Lofoten islands, offshore to the Norwegian mainland offers one thing: peace and solitude. Here you can go fishing or hike on one of the more than 50 islands. At the same time you can also visit the Lofotr Viking Museum , paddle a kayak tour to the secluded coves or discover old fishing villages. --> Lofoten cruises

A unique nature experience is a visit to the Arctic islands of Spitsbergen , where you can observe not only polar bears on guided tours, but also a variety of animals that have adapted to the freezing weather. An absolute highlight are hot air balloon rides. From lofty heights, you will not only see your cruise ship at anchor, but you will also be able to admire the natural beauties from a bird's eye view much better. --> Spitsbergen cruises

Not to be forgotten is also the Nordland region - the gateway to the North of Norway. The region lies above the Arctic Circle and is the beginning of the North of Norway. Here you can expect an incredible, beautiful landscape with a cultural, mystical and historical background. Clear lakes, breathtaking panoramic views and fabulous mountains that create a magical atmosphere, can be found here as far as the eye can see.

When trolls dance through fjords and the northern lights shine

There is something mystical about spending the Summer evenings on your cruise ship in one of Norway's many fjords and looking up to the sky. There are rarely stars to see, because the further North you come, the shorter the nights. At the North Cape, the sun does not set any more between late May and mid-July. This unique natural spectacle is hard to beat and yet the colourful, often blue-green coloured northern lights - Aurora Borealis - are certainly just as spectacular. You can see them especially well in the Spring and Autumn times as no ships visit Norway in the Winter.

Most Norway cruises offer a stop in the famous Geiranger Fjord . Get off the ship in Hellesylt and go kayaking on a discovery tour of the UNESCO World Heritage. Almost vertically falling waterfalls are fed by the snow-capped mountain peaks. And with the appropriate position of the sun, the cascades of the " Seven Sisters " provide a rainbow-like illumination of the rocks. On a spectacular trip over the Trollstigen you drive on a mountain road that winds along the steep cliffs and provides unique views on the way. At the same time, you can get an idea of the amount of work involved in road construction at this point in 1936.

In Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, stroll comfortably against the backdrop of the old harbour front Bryggen - also called Tyskebryggen - past small shops, restaurants and museums. All this once housed the old trading offices of the Hanseatic League. Visit the Hanseatic Landungsbrücken, evidence of Bergen's flourishing business with the world. --> Bergen cruises

During a trip to the stave church Fantoft you will get to know the special architectural style of these buildings, which were built entirely of wood and without a single screw. The stave church here was modelled on the original building from 1150, after it was completely burned down. Originally the church stood in the Sognefjord and was moved to Fantoft in 1883, where it fell victim to the flames in 1992.

In southeastern Norway Ålesund the unique natural landscape and the special architecture meet. Allow yourself a view of the city and the sea from the viewpoints on Aksla, the city hill of Ålesund. The Fjellstua and Kniven observation decks are within walking distance of more than 400 steps from the Stadtpark or can be easily reached by tram. Below them is the city with small offshore islands and opposite the Sunnmøre Alps .

On an excursion to the Alnes lighthouse in the fishing village of the same name, you will get to know Norway's lighthouse construction and you will be able to hear some of the history of the Vikings, who once were masters of the Northern seas.

For those who, in addition to all the breathtaking nature, still fancy a big-city feeling should pay a visit to Trondheim. The 11th-century Gothic Nidaros Cathedral is sure to captivate every visitor. For a shopping stroll and a cozy coffee, there are various shops and cafes. Enjoy the nature and the history of Scandinavia marked by the Vikings and sailors during your Norway cruise.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Uber-cruise deal, eu tariffs, ford 3-row ev suv canned – the week.

Uber Technologies, Inc. and General Motors’-owned robotaxi firm Cruise announced a multi-year strategic partnership to bring Cruise autonomous vehicles (AVs) to the Uber platform from next year. The companies plan to launch the partnership next year with a dedicated number of Chevy Bolt-based autonomous vehicles in the US (locations not yet named).

Cruise to deploy robotaxis on Uber platform from 2025

Ford updated its strategy for electric vehicle manufacturing and offerings that appeared to slow its advance into battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and away from fossil-fuel based internal combustion engines (ICEs). A three-row electric SUV was canned and a next gen e-pickup delayed as part of a drive to be cost competitive on BEVs with Chinese OEMs.

Ford applies brakes to BEV plans

Ford’s cross-town rival General Motors also adjusted its strategic plans – this time in the area of software. GM is to cut more than 1,000 jobs in software positions across its global operations. The job cuts include more than 600 at its Warren Tech Center (just outside Detroit, Michigan).

We also learnt this week that battery swapping is still very much in the e-mobility mix in China, despite battery performance gains. Nio announced it is stepping up the expansion of its battery-swapping network in China, with an additional 900 automated stations to be built this year.

Nio steps up swapping network rollout

After the issues of recent years, interest in arrangements for future semiconductors supply remains high. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has begun work on a €10 billion plant in Dresden. It comes as the European Commission approved €5 billion in state subsidies for the world’s largest chipmaker. TSMC is establishing its first European location with the Dresden plant, which will specialise in chips for the automotive and industrial sectors.

The European Commission (EC) reduced the maximum level of additional import tariffs it proposes to apply to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) imported from China to just under 38%, from 48% announced in June, as it looks to continue to protect EU automakers from products heavily subsidised by the Chinese government. The EC confirmed the new import tariff rates would be applied for a period of five years from November, with the effective rate varying between companies depending on the perceived level of government support and their collaboration with the EC’s investigation. There was a win for Telsa, too.

The details in financial restructures can be pretty complex and a little obscure, but the upshot here is that Porsche is helping to rescue battery firm Varta, which helps secure future battery supplies and keeps the tech inside Germany.

When it comes to the region of South Asia, attention naturally focuses on the huge economy and country that is India. However, there is massive automotive potential in Pakistan – population estimated at over 250m. BYD and other Chinese OEMs are active in Pakistan.

Still on BYD, it is growing fast in the southeast ASEAN markets, too. Some interesting detail in this feature: BYD Auto’s fast growth in the ASEAN-5 region: reasons and challenges

There are mixed fortunes this year in the vehicle markets of ASEAN, according to our regular GlobalData analysis. Thailand sales were off 25% in June.

Uber will add driverless Cruise vehicles to its fleet in 2025

A Chevy Bolt is used as an autonomous vehicle.

After losing its California operating license last year over safety concerns, the autonomous vehicle company Cruise will soon partner with Uber to offer driverless transportation through the popular ride-hail app.

Cruise and Uber announced a multiyear partnership that will begin in 2025 and allow Uber customers to select a driverless Cruise vehicle for qualified trips. The partnership will begin in a single, unspecified city and will rely on Chevy Bolt-based autonomous vehicles.

Cruise idled its entire fleet in October after California regulators revoked the company’s license to provide driverless rides, alleging that the company mishandled a safety incident in which a pedestrian was struck and dragged by a Cruise vehicle in San Francisco.

The pedestrian, who was in the street after being struck by a car with a driver, was pinned under a Cruise vehicle and sent to the hospital with injuries. In 2018, a self-driving vehicle from Uber hit and killed a pedestrian in Arizona, causing the company to halt its driverless program in several cities.

Oct. 26, 2023

Driverless Cruise vehicles remain banned in California, but autonomous cars operated by the Google spinoff Waymo are serving customers in San Francisco. Waymo is expanding into cities around the Bay Area and Southern California, the Associated Press reported, and announced that its robotaxis are completing more than 100,000 paid rides per week. Both Cruise and Uber are based in San Francisco.

Cruise, founded in 2013 and owned by General Motors, is providing trips with a driver behind the wheel in Phoenix, Houston and Dallas. The Uber partnership probably will be launched in one of those cities, the company said, and will rely on autonomous vehicles with no driver.

“Cruise is on a mission to leverage driverless technology to create safer streets and redefine urban life,” Cruise Chief Executive Marc Whitten said in a statement announcing the partnership. “We are excited to partner with Uber to bring the benefits of safe, reliable, autonomous driving to even more people.”

Whitten began leading the company after founder and CEO Kyle Vogt stepped down after the California license suspension. The partnership with Uber is the company’s latest move under Whitten to regain public trust and establish a reliable revenue stream.

GM has not made any money off Cruise, instead seeing $5.8 billion in losses on the robotaxi service from 2021 to 2023, according to the AP. The automaker had an operating loss of $900 million on Cruise in the first half of this year.

Despite financial woes and safety missteps, Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said his company is excited about the partnership.

“We believe Uber can play an important role in helping to safely and reliably introduce autonomous technology to consumers and cities around the world,” Khosrowshahi said in a statement.

Cruise closes one robotaxi investigation with a recall

Investigations around last year’s pedestrian-dragging incident are still ongoing..

Cruise robotaxi in Houston

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is closing an investigation from 2022 into the GM-owned robotaxi company. The agency was looking into Cruise vehicles that stopped unexpectedly, including three times where they were struck from behind.

From the report (included in full below):

Based on ODI’s analysis of immobilization data, the potential safety risk is heavily dependent on the context of the immobilized vehicle’s location, detectability of the vehicle due to hazard lights automatically engaging, and none of the immobilization incidents reviewed resulted in a crash or injuries. ODI also analyzed hard braking data which included 7,632 hard braking events commanded by the Cruise ADS. These events were determined by certain thresholds, including rate of deceleration, without regard to the appropriateness of the braking. ODI determined that Cruise vehicles contributed to 10 crashes that were reported under the Standing General Order 2021-01 (SGO), 4 of which involved a vulnerable road user and resulted in injury

As reported by Reuters , Cruise disagreed about issuing a recall over the issue but did so with a software update applied to Cruise vehicles last month “intended to reduce the risk of unexpected braking maneuvers, including by improvements to perception, prediction, and planning.”

  • For self-driving cars, the free ride is over
  • Waymo’s new robotaxi will feature fewer sensors to help lower costs

The now-closed investigation is separate from the California incident last year, where  a pedestrian in San Francisco was struck by one of its vehicles and dragged for over 20 feet. Investigations into the accident by multiple agencies are continuing, and Cruise is still banned in California . Cruise responded to that incident with another recall .

After the pedestrian incident, Cruise announced in April that it was resuming fleet testing without passengers , and it later installed a new CEO . In June, GM announced an $850 million investment in Cruise to cover its operational costs and keep the company afloat while it works on getting the cars back on the road.

Tom Cruise's $65k a year gift to estranged daughter Suri

Tom Cruise has not been seen with his daughter, Suri since 2013 – but he is still helping out from the sidelines.

The Mission Impossible star, 62, is reportedly estranged from the 18-year-old he shares with his ex-wife Katie Holmes , but he is said to be forking over a substantial amount of money for her foreseeable future.

Suri recently moved into the dorms of Carnegie Mellon University, a private university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but it won't be her mom Katie paying the hefty tuition bill.

According to DailyMail.com , Tom will pay the annual tuition fee of $65,000 after agreeing to cover all of Suri's schooling following his and Katie's 2012 divorce after six years of marriage.

Katie was granted full custody of their daughter in the split, with the divorce settlement also stating that Tom had to pay $400,000 a year in child support payments, as well as all of Suri's "medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular costs."

The child support payments have ceased now that Suri is 18 and no longer living with her mother, but Tom is "fulfilling his obligation" by continuing to pay for her education.

The college freshman was spotted settling into her new home on campus last weekend with help from her famous mother, while Tom was busy filming another installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise in London.

The mother-daughter duo was seen carrying bags and navigating the campus grounds together. Suri, looking every bit the relaxed and stylish young adult, sported a casual white top paired with comfortable baggy jean shorts and white sneakers.

Suri's move-in day marked the beginning of her journey at Carnegie Mellon University, where she will start classes on August 26, according to the school's website.

The teenager, who has grown up in the limelight as the child of Hollywood royalty, is now transitioning to a more typical college experience – sharing a dorm room with another female student, a stark contrast to her luxurious upbringing in New York City.

Carnegie Mellon University offers a variety of dorm options, including the large Donner House, a four-level residence hall that houses nearly 250 first-year students, and the smaller, all-female Scobell House, which accommodates 88 students.

Despite the simplicity of dorm life compared to her previous home, Suri will have access to a wide range of on-campus dining options, from cappuccinos and croissants at Au Bon Pain to pasta dishes at Ciao Bella and kosher fare at The Edge Cafe and Market.

For her fitness needs, there is a state-of-the-art wellness center.

Katie is sure to feel her daughter's absence and spoke to Town and Country magazine earlier this year about Suri leaving home.

"You want them to stay with you forever, but they're these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they're going to go. And that's going to be very, very sad for me," she said.

"Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I'm really proud of her, and I'm happy," she continued.

"I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It's exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that."

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."
