The Freeride World Tour Just Announced Its 2024 Athlete Roster

freeride world tour 2024

The Inertia

The Freeride World Tour, a series of events pitting the top skiers and riders against each other on some of the boldest big-mountain lines on slopes around the world, has a couple of interesting updates this year. Since its conception in 1996 as a single competition event, to the debut of the tour format in 2008, featuring icons from Candide Thovex to Xavier de Le Rue, the FWT has consistently created a stellar format to showcase talent. It recently released this year’s Rider’s Roster and will continue to operate under the direction of FIS (a new development last year). What does this mean for riders, and more importantly, for viewers?

The tour will still be action-packed due to its judging characteristics : riders are scored based on their ability to pick (and complete) challenging lines, maintain control, link maneuvers together fluidly, exercise proper technique, and showcase style by making it all look good together. Though tricks are not required, they tend to score well, and with plenty of cliffs on steep terrain, there’s room during airtime. The most thrilling part of the FWT, as opposed to other ski competitions, is that the riders are only allowed a visual inspection of the contest venue – they ski their line for the first time during the contest.

FIS, short for the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, acquired the FWT in December of 2022 and will continue to manage the large-scale of the tour this winter season . However, not too much will be shaken up from the viewing perspective, as the FWT will still run the day-to-day operations of the events. FIS will focus on broadening the audience for the FWT, as well as strengthening opportunities for the Freeride competitors.

FIS is the largest winter International Federation, and acquiring the FWT means spotlighting these athletes for Olympic opportunities and large-scale projects as opposed to the athletes competing on the tour as a standalone event. The CEO of the Freeride World Tour, Nicolas Hale-Woods , stated that the tour was “thrilled to be joining forces with FIS… Being under the umbrella of the largest winter sports international federation will give them more access to support, increased visibility, and additional resources that will ultimately allow the FWT and all of its stakeholders to grow.”

If you keep up with the WSL tour, you may be somewhat familiar with the FWT format. Interestingly, the FWT has many structural parallels to the WSL. Like the WSL, the FWT is actually a larger brand as well as a competitive tour, and there are several other competitions catering to different skill levels and ages, such as the FWT Qualifier and the FWT Junior. There are also returning winners and rookies, keeping the competition fresh each season, with crowd favorites returning and younger generation riders hoping to break into the big leagues. And, like the WSL tour, there are wildcards.

For the FWT this year, the 2024 Rider’s Roster was released on October 26 , and with 19 new Rookies split between men’s and women’s ski and snowboard categories, there’s a lot of potential for surprises. Of course, there are some non-returners: Reine Barkered left the tour after an impressive 15 years.   For women, Jess Hotter and Elisabeth Gerritzen are also not on the 2024 list .

There are plenty of skiers for the men’s division in the mix this season who have not yet been on tour, such as Martin Bender, Jackson Bathgate, Kendall Goodman, Wei Tien Ho, Tenra Katsuno, and Colton Shaff. On the women’s side, seven out of eight women have less than one year of experience on the tour . Additionally, three of these women are rookies: Astrid Cheylus, Lydia Nelson, and Taylor Dobyns, adding even more excitement to what could be a crazy season.

Due to all of the new talent this year, the viewing experience should be pretty nuts. The younger generations often push the limits more than the “old heads,” even though it takes a season or two to really root for someone on tour and watching successful skiers and riders from season’s past can be really satisfying. Winners often get in a groove and take out more than one event , so it’s nice to see so many fresh faces (and new opportunities for countries to be represented on the podium)! I’d be willing to say this season may be one of the most compelling seasons we’ve ever had in over a decade (pretty much the whole lifetime of the modern tour).

Who are your picks for this season? The experienced riders we have a sense of already, or the title-hungry rookies? No matter who you’re betting on, we’ll find out starting on January 27, and on February 1, we’ll know for sure.

Only the best. We promise.

Freeride World Tour announces Wildcard Riders for 2024

freeride world tour 2024

Ladies and gentlemen… it’s TIME to get fired up for one of the main events of the ski season. The global thunder dome of skiing, otherwise known as the Freeride World Tour is inching closer by the day. This year, the Tour will include six stops spanning across six different countries, from Europe to North America. The venues will undoubtably cater towards different riding styles and showcase variable snow conditions, giving the riders unique opportunities to shine.

2024 FWT Stops (in order of start date)

1. Baquiera Baret, Spain

2. Ordino Arcalís, Andorra

3. Kicking Horse, Canada

4. Caucasus Mountains, Georgia

5. Fieberbrunn, Austria

6. Xtreme Verbier, Switzerland

Each year, the FWT selects a handful of Male and Female riders to compete in addition to the full roster who have qualified based on their total points. This year, there are eight total skiers who were awarded Wildcard positions. Some names might be new, and you might recognize others from a different discipline (hint: Thib)! Take a look at the names below and make note of your favorites. This is sure to be a stellar 2024 season on the Freeride World Tour.

Courtesy of the Freeride World Tour

Ski Women – The addition of four exceptionally talented riders will shake up the ski women’s category. Previous experience is on the side of three of them – with Hedvig Wessel arguably one of the strongest female freeride athletes in the last five years – while all eyes will be on Manon Loschi to see if she can convert her FWT Qualifier form into FWT fame.

Manon Loschi (FRA) – Even as a FWT rookie and season wildcard, this young French rider will surely be an outside favorite this year, owing to her dominant season on the FWT Qualifiers in 2022, which was topped off with a win in the final in Nendaz. It’s also worth mentioning she is coached by FWT legend Sebastien Michaud and hails from the freeride paradise of La Clusaz, in the heart of the Haute-Savoie, France. Injury kept her sidelined last season, but she is back in form and ready to fire. “I’m stoked about joining the FWT, and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and having some fun!”

Zuzanna Witych (POL) – Polish superstar Zuzanna is no stranger to FWT success, winning the Fieberbrunn Pro in 2021 and finishing third overall that season. Her residence in Switzerland keeps her big mountain skills on point, and her third-place finish in the FWT Challengers last year highlights her recent form. “It’s an amazing feeling to be back on the tour. With the experience gained from previous seasons, I will make the most of these special moments, and appreciate my time even more in and out of competition.”

Hedvig Wessel (NOR) – Hedvig shot to FWT fame when she became the first female skier to perform a backflip in competition. Her accomplishments, however, extend far beyond this. She has finished runner-up in the FWT three times – claiming multiple wins and podiums – and represented her country in moguls at the Olympics on two occasions. She took a sabbatical last year for filming commitments, including with Matchstick Productions, but she is back on the FWT roster as the sole Norwegian. “I had a nice break from competition, but now I’m ready again. I love competing and being involved in the FWT. I’ve missed everyone here, and I can’t wait to meet all the new riders.”

Lily Bradley (USA) – Lily had an astonishing rookie year in 2022, with a podium in Andorra and a first place in Canada putting her in title contention. She finished fourth overall that year, capturing the attention of the freeride community. Injury unfortunately kept her on the bench for most of last season, but the Tahoe Native is ready to bring her energy back to the tour.

Ski Men – The ski men’s category sees the addition of contrasting styles, with two true big mountain guns returning to the lineup, together with a couple of more freestyle-oriented riders. This bolsters an insane list of athletes, who will surely be pushing each other to the limits at each event.

Kristofer Turdell (SWE) – Kristofer is one of the biggest names in the sport, with his consistency over the years cementing him over a dozen podiums and earning him two FWT crowns. Last season, he sat on the sidelines at the Kicking Horse Golden BC Pro due to illness – hampering his chances of making the cut – and has been awarded a season wildcard to make amends, and to showcase again his near-flawless big mountain style. “The tour has taken me around the globe, and I’ve been lucky to see some amazing places together with new and old friends throughout the years. Last year did not go my way: I started badly and then got sick and missed out. I did not expect to get a wildcard since there are so many incredible skiers that I know have worked hard to get a chance, making me thankful and excited for the upcoming season!”

Abel Moga (ESP) – You’d be forgiven to think that Abel – AKA The Ultimate Showman – is a seasoned veteran, but at only 22 years of age, the Spaniard is still a young buck. His big mountain prowess is inspired by his fellow countryman, Aymar Navarro, which is complemented by his wide range of tricks to make him a real threat this season. “To have the opportunity to be in the FWT again is an honor for me. I am super stoked and can’t wait to shred with all the crew again. Since I first entered FWT competitions, I have not stopped fulfilling dreams, and I am sure this year will be the same.”

Dillon Flinders (USA) – Dillon hails from Utah, USA, and is a true all-mountain man, competing as both a professional freerider and mountain biker. He skis with a similar style to his friend Ross Tester – who is taking a sabbatical from freeride competitions this year – and will come in hot as a rookie on tour. “I’m ready for a wild season competing on massive mountains with my friends. I’m incredibly grateful and juiced to ski new zones and countries on the world stage. Let’s do this!”

Thibault Magnin (ESP) – Spanish rider Thibault Magnin learned to ski in the Swiss Alps, and now resides in Andorra where he continues to master his craft. Although a big air and slopestyle specialist – and an Olympian in these disciplines – he recently switched codes and competed in FWT Qualifier events in New Zealand. He joins the FWT this year, and will look to bring his bag of freestyle tricks into some of the world’s gnarliest freeride faces. “It’s always been a childhood dream of mine to compete on the FWT. While I’ve primarily focused on park riding, I’ve always been drawn to freeride skiing. I believe the two styles complement each other perfectly, and my goal has always been to experience every facet of the sport and become a well- rounded skier. I can’t wait to embrace this new challenge. I’m here to learn, stay true to my passion for skiing, and hopefully deliver an outstanding performance!”

Before The Flag

CLICK INTO ACTION

Easy Suspension Adjustment

The 2025 KTM XC and XC-F range took their already awesome suspension package and turned it up to 11. The WP XACT Closed Cartridge spring forks and WP XACT rear shock has been updated, with reworked settings and alterations to improve weight distribution and increase overall response. As always, the suspension boasts an easy tool-free setup at both ends, ensuring you chase down the podium in total control. On the rear, a hand-adjustable dual compression control allows riders to adjust high- and low-speed settings in a matter of seconds. The forks on the front end are also easily adjusted thanks to hand-adjustable clickers on the bottom of the fork shoe and top cap.

BREATHE EASY

Now a more robust one-piece construction, the airbox on the 2025 KTM XC range features a redesigned air inlet sleeve and snorkel, which prevents deformation and improves airflow. But don't fret, toolless filter access is retained, with an intuitive filter mounting system and protection against dirt intrusion.

Start Strong

UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE

More Usable Power

Perfectly filling the gap between the KTM 250 XC-F and the powerhouse KTM 450 XC-F, the lightweight KTM 350 XC-F powerplant rules the roost in a class of its own. Designed and tuned to provide the best performance and handling characteristics possible, the DOHC engine delivers endless mid-range and the top-end power together with the benefits of mass centralization and ideal anti-squat behavior. With 450-rivalling performance and an overall engine weight of only 60.6 lb, you'll leave the competition with more than a little mud on the face.

DROP THE CLUTCH

Launch Control & Quickshifter

Launch control, ENGAGED! Designed for the holeshot, the 2025 KTM 350 XC-F comes standard with launch control and a Quickshifter function, allowing for fast upshifts without using the clutch. Launch control is easily engaged by pressing the traction control and Quickshifter buttons simultaneously and works by limiting the amount of power to the rear wheel, improving traction, and preventing loss of control under hard acceleration. Meanwhile, the Quickshifter function means you can bang through from 2nd to 6th gear with your focus solely on the first corner.

TOTAL TRACTION

Selectable Maps + TC

The map select switch on the 2025 KTM 350 XC-F features a simpler design, allowing for easier functionality in switching between 2 engine maps. Map 1 provides a more linear power curve, while map 2 punches all-out with aggressive throttle and explosive power. Luckily, Traction control is easy toggled to an on or off position from the same switch, ensuring maximum traction and a distinct advantage in wet or muddy conditions.

CORNER ON RAILS

Absolute Control

No matter how gnarly the trail is, you'll stay in control thanks to a rider-focussed frame design that has not only been engineered for longitudinal rigidity, but also positions rotating mass as close as possible to the center of gravity. Thick frame walls also improve reliability, flex characteristics and offer unmatched rider feel. The shock mounting also provides the perfect amount of anti-squat for better traction out of corners, while the footpeg mounting position reduces the risk of hooking up on roots or rocks. Additionally, forged brackets on the lower frame rails allow for easy installation of the skid plate.

freeride world tour 2024

The 2025 KTM XC and XC-F range feature upgraded tank shrouds with bi-compound plastics, which work alongside the specially-developed rider triangle, to providing unmatched knee contact and gripping surfaces - especially when standing on the pegs. While the plastics work to expel mud buildup in wet, muddy conditions, the flat seat profile and high-grip orange seat cover providing exceptional rider movement and control. A handy grip pocket under the seat, just above the airbox, makes gripping the bike and lifting it much easier.

UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE

Go the distance

You call it a fuel tank. We call it a 8.5 liters race bucket. For 2025, the transparent polythene fuel tank has been upgraded with a new fuel tank roll - which not only secures the tank more firmly in place, and allows for easy fuel level monitoring - it also protects the frame from unwanted scrubbing and race rash.

Hit The Big Stuff

04. Hit The Big Stuff

HARNESSING GRAVITY

Mass Centralization

The 2025 KTM XC and XC-F range receive some major frame updates directly from Factory Racing efforts. For starters, the frame area around the rear shock mount has been updated, and more streamlined. The front area of the frame is also updated. with a different wall thickness compared to the previous model year, with renewed engine mounts. This adds up to a 300g weight saving, and improved flex for better cornering behavior.

UNFLAPPABLE FRONT END

WP XACT Fork

An all-new WP XACT Closed Cartridge fork finds its way into the KTM XC and XC-F line-up for 2024. A new mid-valve piston concept optimizes the oil flow within the cartridge, providing fast and consistent damping characteristics. This also avoids unwanted foaming of oil which can lead to the unwanted changes in damping characteristics and less consistent damping behavior. The fork is also fully adjustable in rebound and compression, thanks to hand adjustable clickers on the bottom of the fork shoe and fork top cap.

ALL-OUT TRACTION

WP XACT Shock

As with the front end, the WP XACT rear shock has also undergone some changes for 2025. Reworked settings to account for the updated frame, and rear linkage, changes for stiffness and that weightsaving, make the 2025 KTM XC range even more READY TO RACE. This, along with full adjustability, 300 mm of travel, and unmatched out-the-box ability, make this the ideal setup for cross-country domination.

Maintaining Momentum

WELCOME TO NEXT LEVEL MOTO

Connectivity Unit Offroad

Riders - meet your new secret weapon. Available in the KTM PowerParts catalog as a must-have addition to the KTM XC-F range, the Connectivity Unit Offroad offers a wide range of functionalities and adjustability options via the KTMconnect app. The CUO gives you a new insight into your riding, allows you to alter your engine behavior, and even provides you with optimized suspension settings based on individual preferences and riding conditions. Welcome to the next level moto.

UNOBTRUSIVE IMPACT

Ultimate rigidity

A new chain guide and chain guard result in improved durability and minimize the chances of hooking on external objects. Especially in extremely muddy conditions, while reducing dirt build-up around the swingarm and chain guard. This, together with this new hollow, die-cast aluminum swingarm, means optimal stiffness and reliability at the lowest possible weight. Now that's a Win-Win.

FLAT OUT TO THE FINISH

Consistency

The compact and lightweight DOHC cylinder features a short profile with the camshaft located as close to the center of gravity as possible. Lightweight valves are actuated via a DLC coated finger followers with optimized timing, specifically designed to deliver precise levels of torque and throttle response. The diameter of the intake valves is 36.3 mm, while on the exhaust it is 29.1 mm. The intake ports also allow higher flow coefficients, resulting in a more efficient and powerful engine, with the valve cover reducing the number of mounting screws, and a single oil spray jet guarantees efficient cooling while keeping the weight low.
