This fascinating thriller follows the rise and fall of Ronald and Reginald Kray, identical twin gangsters who built a criminal empire in London during the 1950s and '60s using gruesome, unhinged tactics and savvy business acumen.

See the Cast of ‘Legend’ Then and Now

In 1986, Ridley Scott released his dark fantasy film 'Legend,' inspired by classic fairy tales and starring young up-and-coming actors like Tom Cruise and Mia Sara in the lead roles. Now that almost 30 years have passed, we thought it would be fun to check in and see what the cast of the film has been up to.

Tom Cruise, Jack

Then:  Rising star Tom Cruise followed up roles in 'Risky Business' and 'The Outsiders' with the heroic and handsome Jack in 'Legend.' But it was his role in 'Top Gun' the following year that solidified his mega-star status.

Now:  Of course you know what Tom Cruise has been up to -- he's everywhere. Cruise has become one of our biggest stars, and though his height (5'7) makes him an unlikely action star, we've seen him kick butt in everything from the 'Mission: Impossible' movies to 'War of the Worlds,' and more recently, 'Oblivion.'

Mia Sara, Princess Lili

Then:  'Legend' was Mia Sara's first film role, landed at the age of 16 when director Ridley Scott watched her audition tape and loved her natural "theatrical instincts." In the film, Sara plays the beautiful Princess Lili who is captured by the Prince of Darkness and forced to marry him. But she's not your average damsel in distress -- Lili plays an integral role in taking Darkness down.

Now:  Sara followed her role in 'Legend' as the object of Ferris Bueller's affection in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.' She continues to act, appearing in some small movies and TV shows, including 'Chicago Hope' and the recent mini-series 'The Witches of Oz.' She has a pilot license and enjoys flying, and recently married Brian Henson, son of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson.

Tim Curry, Lord of Darkness

Then:  While considering actor Richard O'Brien for a role in 'Legend,' director Ridley Scott watched 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and was instantly charmed by Tim Curry's performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Curry was hired to play the devilish Lord of Darkness, helping to bring to life one of cinema's most memorable creations.

Now:  A classic theatre actor, Curry went on to give us memorable performances as the sinister Pennywise in Stephen King's 'It' TV mini-series, Wadsworth in 'Clue' and a very snobby hotel clerk in 'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.' Nowadays he spends most of his time doing voice work for cartoons, including 'Young Justice' and 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars.'

David Bennent, Honeythorn Gump

Then:  Swiss actor David Bennent played the role of Gump, an elf who helps Jack find and rescue Princess Lili from the Lord of Darkness. Director Ridley Scott dubbed over Bennent's voice in the film, using co-star Alice Playten for Gump's dialogue instead because Bennent's voice sounded "too German." Prior to his role in 'Legend,' Bennent had a constroversial role in 'The Tin Drum' at the age of 12.

Now:  Most of Bennent's roles have been in German projects, though he does a lot of theatrical work, appearing in plays 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Michael Kramer.'

Alice Playten, Blix

Then:  British theatre actress Alice Playten played the role of Blix, the Lord of Darkness' right-hand goblin, sent out to find and destroy the unicorns and the power of light.

Now:  Playten's post-'Legend' work included guest spots on 'Frasier' and 'Law and Order,' and she provied voice work for 'Felix the Cat,' 'Heavy Metal' and several other animated projects. Unfortunately, Playten passed away in 2011 due to complications from diabetes.

Annabelle Lanyon, Oona

Then:  Annabelle Lanyon played the part of ethereal forest fairy Oona, and one of many companions on the quest to help Jack rescue Lili. Prior to starring in 'Legend,' Lanyon made appearances in several British television series, including the 1975 version of 'Anne of Avonlea.'

Now:  Sometime around 1992, Lanyon disappeared from acting, but returned in the early '00s with roles in small projects like 'Are You Ready for Love?' and 'Burlesque Fairytales.'

Billy Barty, Screwball

Then: Getting his start opposite Mickey Rooney in the 'Mickey McGuire' shorts from the 1920s, Barty appeared in everything from 'Gold Diggers of 1933' (where he played a baby at the age of nine) to 'The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington.'

Now: Barty followed up 'Legend' with appearances in 'Willow,' 'Masters of the Universe' and pretty much every other fantasy film from the 1980s. Sadly he passed away in 2000 from heart failure.

Robert Picardo, Meg Mucklebones

Then:  Character actor Robert Picardo was tapped for the role of gross and gooey goblin Meg Mucklebones. Prior to his role in 'Legend,' Picardo began his career in Joe Dante's 'The Howling,' and went on to star in several more of Dante's films, including 'The 'Burbs' and 'Explorers.'

Now:  Picardo went on have memorable roles on 'Home Improvement' and 'Star Trek: Voyager.' Most recently he's been seen in 'Supernatural,' 'The Mentalist' and 'Justified,' and lent his voice to the video game 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.'

Recent movies have created sort of a generic fantasy universe of Muppets and swamps, strange beasts and evil tyrants, damsels and heroic lads, and ancient prophecies and mythical legends. It's a world inspired by ingredients from "Lord of the Rings," the "Star Wars" movies, Dungeons and Dragons gamesmanship, tales of King Arthur and the latest gimmicks from the special-effects people.

In a movie that works, these ingredients can be exciting and delightful. "Legend" does not work.

The movie is a British big-budget, special-effects extravaganza by Ridley Scott , the director of " Alien ." It tells of a time long, long ago, when unicorns roam the Earth and the powers of light and darkness are at war. An evil prince named Darkness lives in caverns far beneath the Earth, scheming to blot the sun out of the lives of all the planet's creatures and to rule the gloom forever.

Earth itself is a sylvan place, filled with flowers and little glades and grassy clearings - but also with dread swamps and moldy fens. Young lovers can kiss for an afternoon in a bath of sunshine, but fearsome storms come up suddenly and lash the land with their fury. A race of evil little druids lives in the woods, and they spread mischief wherever they venture. Their favorite pastime is frightening the unicorns.

Into this setting come our heroes, Jack and Lili. Jack ( Tom Cruise ) is a hero whose mission in life is to vanquish Darkness and allow the sun to prevail. Lili ( Mia Sara ) is the young woman he meets and falls in love with, but she is lured into the underworld and seduced by an exotic priestess into seemingly becoming evil. Will Jack save Lili and defeat Darkness? Or will the movie end unhappily? Can we vote more than once? Let it be said that "Legend" is an impressive technical achievement. Scott is a perfectionist who takes infinite pains to make things look right.

The problem is, the world of "Legend" is itself wrong for this material. To some degree, this is a fairy tale, and it needs a certain lightness of tone, a plucky cheerfulness, to work. Like many recent sword and sorcery movies, it is so effective in rendering evil, so good at depicting the dire, bleak fates facing the heroes, that it's too dreary and gloomy for its own good.

Performances tend to get lost in productions like this. I particularly noticed how easily Cruise got buried in the role of Jack.

Here is the talented young actor from " Risky Business ," where he came across as a genuine individual, and this time he's so overwhelmed by sets and special effects that his character could be played by anybody.

Tim Curry , from " The Rocky Horror Picture Show ," makes an effective Darkness; I liked his style. But, once again, the makeup people have done such a good job with his blazing eyes and gigantic horns that, in a way, almost any actor could be lurking inside there (only Curry's sensuous lips give him away).

Despite all its sound and fury, "Legend" is a movie I didn't care very much about. All of the special effects in the world, and all of the great makeup, and all of the great Muppet creatures can't save a movie that has no clear idea of its own mission and no joy in its own accomplishment.

Very strong chance that this may be the most visually appealing movie as far as my tastes go—beautiful on all fronts with lush scenery, hypnotic visual atmos soundwaved with euphoric tones courtesy of Tangerine Dream, the best goblins and melty faced creatures I’ve ever seen, and the single scariest image from my youth that I would eventually become obsessed with—Darkness.

A friend recently said that this will probably be the best Legend of Zelda movie that we’ll ever get and I’m inclined to agree. Hits all the beats I look for in a movie like this without being 4 hours long which almost gives the the vapors as much as that TD score. I was…

What else do you people want? This fucking thing has:

- Tim Curry wrapped in a thousand pounds of sexy latex. - Tom Cruise hugging a fox. - A Tangerine Dream score played with one elbow. - Lengthy unicorn pornography. - "I could eat her brains like jam." - Tom Cruise wearing a scale mail dress. - There's a fucking character named Honeythorn Gump. - Mia Sara, nailing her performance and still being the second prettiest. - A swamp witch played by Robert "Innerspace Cowboy" Picardo. - Tom Cruise squatting. A lot. - Billy Barty, being a goddamn delight. - A sex dungeon made by Disney. - An entire sequence devoted to throwing enormous frisbees. - The plot of at least three D&D campaigns I've played. - A way cooler fairy than that Julia Roberts Hook garbage.

Anyone who has more than a passing familiarity with my reviews, should be aware of the fact that I don't believe in objective film analysis. My reviews and ratings are an expression of my subjective feelings on a film at that particular moment in time. But, even if I did review films objectively, this is one of those films where I would find such a task impossible. This was one of those defining films for me. As with Alien and Blade Runner , there's just something about the aesthetic of Ridley Scott's early output that resonated with me in my formative years. It's one of those films I can watch endlessly and, every time I do, for 89 minutes, I feel…

a rare ornate gem of a film, easily among the best of ridley scott's work, back when his visuals were lush & overwhelming in detail instead of stringent and aseptic. legend coasts along on intuitive ethereal vibes, a tactile set-bound fantasia of slime-slick goblins, capricious fairy glamour and deliriously fervid colors, all sweetly wrapped within the buttery-smooth synths of tangerine dream's perfect score. the kind of movie where no one wears pants and tom cruise's face is constantly smothered in a thick sheen of glitter. a pure sensory experience.

Action!: The Scott Brothers – How To Get Screwed By Spielberg Twice W/ Ridley Scott

The movie that feels like a slap in the face and a “fuck you” to everyone who told Ridley he shouldn't use the unicorn in Blade Runner.

After having this movie on Prime for almost a year now, and hearing about the movie for quite some time, I finally decided to watch this somewhat bizarre fantasy movie that followed the iconic "Blade Runner". In a sense, it feels like a radical departure from the film noir, but then you realize that's not entirely the case. The film's cinematography and camera work share a lot in common with his previous project. With his display of creativity…

Every Ridley Scott Movie Ranked From Worst To Best (Including House of Gucci)

The matrix 5 can finally deliver on the franchise's ultimate untold prequel story, chad michael murray’s new netflix movie is a subtle follow-up to his 21-year-old lindsay lohan comedy.

  • Legend, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Cruise, is a unique cult classic fantasy film that stands out in both their filmographies.
  • Despite being a box office flop, the film gained its cult status through its stunning visuals and the exceptional performance of Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness.
  • The director's cut of Legend, released in 2002, with its different ending and original score, helped solidify its cult classic status by offering a morally gray narrative and questioning the concepts of good and evil.

While a number of '80s movies have become cult classics, one of the more curious films to receive such status is the 1985 film Legend starring Tom Cruise. Directed by Ridley Scott, Legend is an epic fantasy adventure film that follows a young man named Jack (Tom Cruise) who must confront and defeat the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) as he plans to curse the entire world with eternal night by killing all the unicorns in this realm and taking their horns. Along the way, Jack encounters various creatures and a princess named Lili (Mia Sara).

After he made Alien , Scott wanted to make a fairytale film. He teamed up with author William Hjortsberg and the two worked closely together for five weeks on the first draft of what would become Legend . Soon after, Scott started principal photography on his iconic sci-fi film Blade Runner (via Starburst Magazine ). By the time Scott had completed Blade Runner , he and Hjortsberg went through 15 drafts before settling on what would serve as the official Legend script. And while Legend may not be nearly as popular as either Alien or Blade Runner , it had enough unique aspects that allowed the Tom Cruise fantasy adventure to become a cult classic.

Ridley Scott is one of Hollywood's most influential sci-fi directors; from Exodus to Alien, here's every one of his movies ranked from worst to best.

The Only Fantasy Film Ridley Scott and Tom Cruise Worked On

Part of why Legend became a cult classic is that it stands out in both Ridley Scott's and Tom Cruise's catalog, serving as the only fantasy film either has worked on. While some of Scott's films have fantastical elements, most notably his biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings , Legend is the only pure fantasy movie that Scott has directed. Considering that a lot of Scott's filmography consists of high-concept science fiction movies, big-budget historical action epics, intense crime dramas, or horror films, something like Legend completely stands out. The uniqueness of this kind of movie in a filmography like Ridley Scott's makes it worth seeking out.

Similarly, Legend is the only pure fantasy movie that Tom Cruise has starred in. While it can be argued that his reboot of The Mummy has fantastical elements in it, like Scott, he has never again worked on a pure fantasy film. Cruise's filmography primarily consists of either high-adrenaline action movies like Top Gun: Maverick or Mission: Impossible , science fiction films like Oblivion or Edge of Tomorrow , or artistic character dramas like Eyes Wide Shut or A Few Good Men . Therefore, like Scott, Tom Cruise being in a film like Legend is a reason why it is appealing.

Legend Bombed At The Box Office

Like many other movies that become cult classics, Legend was a flop — Tom Cruise's only real box office bomb . The film had a $25 million dollar budget and only made a worldwide total of about $23.5 million despite having been the number one movie at the box office for two weeks when it was released in 1985 (via The Numbers ). The fact that Legend performed so poorly at the box office could be a big reason why neither Scott nor Cruise attempted to make another fantasy movie. However, regardless of how it did financially, Legend eventually gained its cult status when it was seen on home video.

Legend Was Poorly Received Despite Some Positives Aspects

Legend received mostly negative reviews, with criticisms of it being incoherent, messy, and overall lacking a sense of identity or purpose. Roger Ebert described Legend as "... a movie that has no clear idea of its own mission and no joy in its own accomplishment ." (via RogerEbert.com ) Ebert's TV partner and fellow critic, Gene Siskel, was even harsher towards Scott's fantasy film, stating " I don't want to remember any more about Legend than to make sure I include it in my 'worst films of 1986' list and never rent it when it comes out as a video cassette ." (via Chicago Tribune )

However, even the harshest critics cannot deny some admirable aspects of Legend as many of the positive reviews praise the film for its gorgeous visuals. Through a combination of the cinematography, set pieces, and most importantly the makeup effects, Legend was dazzling to look at. Several critics stated that Legend 's visuals and makeup prosthetics alone were enough reasons to see it. A big reason why the movie had such great makeup effects is because of the involvement of makeup effects artist Rob Bottin, who is best known for his work on films like The Howling , Robocop , and The Thing .

Tim Curry Gave A Great Performance

Another aspect of Legend that even the biggest detractors praised was Tim Curry's performance as the Lord of Darkness. Despite only appearing in the last 20 minutes and heavily covered with makeup and prosthetics, Curry received much acclaim for truly embodying this evil, sadistic character and has been cited by many as the best part of the movie. While Curry has played similar types of villains and creatures before, he is completely unrecognizable as Darkness and gives a hugely entertaining yet thoroughly terrifying performance.

The Director's Cut Helped Legend Become A Cult Classic

Similar to the multiple director's cuts that Blade Runner received , a big reason why Legend became a cult classic is the unrated Director's Cut released in 2002. There are two main differences between Legend 's theatrical and director's cut, and the first is that the latter offers a more bittersweet ending in which Jack and Lili go their separate ways instead of riding off into the sunset. The other big change is that the Legend director's cut uses the original Jerry Goldsmith score that was kept in for European audiences rather than the music by Tangerine Dream, Jon Anderson, and Brian Ferry that was in the US theatrical release (via Cinefantastique ).

Overall, while the theatrical cut provides a more clear-cut, good vs. evil story, the Legend director's cut provides a more morally gray narrative. In the director's cut, the ideas about good and evil are consistently questioned as the protagonists are flawed individuals who make mistakes and may not be the pure embodiment of good, but will still rise to the occasion at the end of the day. In the same vein that Blade Runner became a cult classic when an improved version of the movie became available, Legend received a similar status and praise for doing the same.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

‘I thought I had been cast in a Tom Cruise film – until I was asked to touch myself on camera’

Tom Cruise

On an otherwise unremarkable day in 2019, jobbing actor John Taylor* received an email that would change his life forever.

He did not initially recognise the sender’s name but a quick Google search revealed Doug Liman was a huge Hollywood director, behind blockbusters including The Bourne Identity.

Doug said he was looking for undiscovered talent for his latest movie set in space starring Tom Cruise and John had been recommended by a producer he had previously worked with.

‘It was surreal, exciting, and weird,’ John recalled after receiving the offer; global superstardom, it seemed, was now in touching distance.

But first John needed to get in shape for the physically intense role and was instructed by Doug, and Donna Langley, the chairperson of the film’s producer Universal, to undergo martial arts training.

He was asked to pay $800 (£638) upfront for the teaching which, at the time, ‘didn’t seem like a huge deal’ to John, who had been paying for acting classes. It was another skill to add to his arsenal.

Doug would also call him multiple times a day, for hours on end, and ask him to watch dozens of films back-to-back, from dusk until dawn, and write analyses of the characters.

Doug Liman

Eager to impress, John recalled to the makers of the Apple TV Plus documentary Hollywood Con Queen : ‘The whole time I was waiting for my phone to ring to do whatever they needed.’

But then John’s prescribed preparation took a horrific turn.

He was told Donna wanted to make sure he could perform a specific scene in the film and was made to jump on a Skype call. Her camera was switched off.

Donna asked him to act out chatting up and then kissing a ‘beautiful’ woman. John did as instructed but her feedback was not positive. She said she didn’t feel that he ‘believed’ it.

‘She was right,’ John recalled. ‘It was incredibly awkward and I didn’t believe it and it was uncomfortable and I didn’t want to do it.’

Donna Langley

After an hours-long break for John to ‘loosen up’, they reconvened on Skype and Donna asked him to reenact the scene with his trousers off.

John said he obliged as he was wearing underpants and his waist downwards was not visible on the camera.

But then he was asked to touch himself.

‘And then I snapped,’ John said. ‘I was like, “No, this is ridiculous. This is not OK what you’re doing.”

‘It was the strongest combination of anger and of feeling upset I’ve ever felt – to the point where I was literally shaking. I was completely disrespected.’

Hollywood Con Queen Hargobind Punjabi Tahilramani

When Doug apologised to John for Donna’s behaviour, only to ask for more money minutes later, it dawned on John he had been scammed.

A con artist had been impersonating the Hollywood power players and swindled $5,000 (£3,989) out of him.

After the realisation, John said: ‘[I thought] this is a really horrible person who uses people for sport.’

Donna and Doug had been impersonated by one man, Hargobind Punjabi Tahilramani, also known as the Hollywood Con Queen, whose crimes have been explored in the Apple three-part series.

Scott Johnson of The Hollywood Reporter

Tahilramani had pretended to be multiple Hollywood executives to dupe more than 300 victims out for more than $1m (£797,999) by offering them non-existent film work in Indonesia between 2013 and 2020.

With the help of The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Johnson, who first broke the story, filmmaker Chris Smith, who also directed the Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, has turned the extraordinary case into a gripping documentary.

For the three-part docuseries, Tiger King executive producer Chris even spoke to Tahilramani, who was born in Indonesia but had been living in the UK, via Zoom, as he recounted to Metro.co.uk ahead of its release.

On his first impression of Tahilramani, Chris said: ‘He was very in control of the way that he presented himself and the way that he revealed information.

Chris Smith

‘I think he was attempting to manipulate and control our dialogue and communication.

‘But what makes him so masterful is that it felt very genuine and real. I sympathise with the victims.’

Chris also said that during the making of the Hollywood Con Queen, he had concerns he had been sucked into Tahilramani’s web of manipulation.

He added: ‘By the end of the series, we found ourselves in Indonesia exploring all these things that he wanted us to explore.

‘We realised that maybe we had fallen prey to the same sort of manipulation that his victims have fallen prey to.

Hollywood Con Queen Hargobind Punjabi Tahilramani

‘It was hard to understand always what was real, and there’s part of him that feels very relatable and genuine.

‘But it was trying to disentangle what was real, and what was not real, that was the constant push and pull of the process of trying to make this series.’

What also emerges from the Hollywood Con Queen is that Tahilramani’s motivation was not purely financial.

‘It’s hard to say [what his main aim was],’ Chris, who worked on the documentary for four years, explained.

‘He was living a good life in London and had nice clothes and went to nice restaurants. I don’t think the money was immaterial.

‘But from our perspective, it felt like it wasn’t the primary motivation, it felt like it was more about something else. It was about psychological manipulation, and destroying people’s dreams.

‘I don’t think we can ever fully know.’

Tahilramani was arrested following an FBI investigation on November 25, 2020 in a £60-a-night Aparthotel in  Manchester .

On June 6, 2023 a British judge ruled that he be extradited to the US to face trial for his crimes.

Tahilramani remains in the UK and is fighting extradition.

*Names have been changed.

Hollywood Con Queen is available to stream on Apple TV Plus from May 8.

Stanley Kubrick Initially Wanted Steve Martin in Eyes Wide Shut

  • Stanley Kubrick had a great sense of humor and envisioned a surrealist sex comedy adaptation of Eyes Wide Shut .
  • Steve Martin was considered for the lead role in Eyes Wide Shut and Kubrick admired his comedic abilities.
  • While they never collaborated on the film, the meeting between Martin and Kubrick showcased their potential artistic synergy.

It is hard to imagine a world where Stanley Kubrick and Steve Martin would ever cross paths professionally. The public perception of the two figures, that the former solely deals with cold drama and the latter is merely a comedian, is misguided. Kubrick had a great sense of humor and a genuine fondness for comedy , while Martin's artistic taste was unquestionable. During the interminable production of what would be his final film, Eyes Wide Shut , Kubrick's casting of a fractured married couple was crucial. For the male lead, Martin was originally eyed by the prestigious director to carry out his swan song film.

Stanley Kubrick Had a Unique Vision for 'Eyes Wide Shut'

For Stanley Kubrick , directing a new project requires mulling over concepts and extensive research. This is seen in his work output in the back half of his career, such as when he went 7 years without a film in between The Shining and Full Metal Jacket , and 12 years in between that and Eyes Wide Shut . In certain instances, he will dive head-first into a project and then abruptly abandon it ( one movie being Aryan Papers ), as seen with his unrealized Napoleon film and Holocaust drama. Kubrick began developing Eyes Wide Shut , an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler 's novella, Dream Story , following the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey . Upon purchasing the book rights, the director envisioned an unlikely pivot in the film's adaptation: a surrealist sex comedy . When it comes to comedy, Kubrick understands its effectiveness, despite the mythmaking of him as a clinical and sterile filmmaker. Dr. Strangelove is one of the finest satires of our time, and Barry Lyndon , an austere epic costume drama, has been championed as a masterful "comedy-in-disguise." Kubrick's distinct narrative shift naturally called for an innate comedic presence.

What Would Stanley Kubricks Napoleon Movie Have Looked Like?

By the late 1970s, Steve Martin was an established star as a stand-up comic. At his peak, he resembled a rock star more than the traditional lounge comedian. In 1979, Carl Reiner brought his fiery energy and alluring charisma to the big screen with The Jerk . Throughout the next five decades of his illustrious career, which remains potent thanks to his hit Hulu series, Only Murders in the Building , Martin's comedic presence was indelible.

Interestingly enough, Kubrick praised The Jerk , citing it as one of his favorites. This endorsement, along with White Men Can't Jump and Albert Brooks ' rom-com about envy , Modern Romance , fueled the mystique surrounding an already enigmatic filmmaker. His admiration for comedy films seemed noteworthy. When casting the role of Bill Hartford ( Tom Cruise ), Kubrick, in the words of David Mikics , the author behind a 2020 biography of the director , "fantasized about casting an actor in Dream Story who would have a comedian’s resilience, imagining Steve Martin or Woody Allen in the leading role."

Steve Martin Was Considered for 'Eyes Wide Shut' by Stanley Kubrick

Around the late '70s/early '80s, Martin was pitched the synopsis of a new story by Kubrick that would eventually become Eyes Wide Shut , an off-kilter erotic thriller about a Manhattan doctor's perverse, nightmarish odyssey into an underground cult of sex parties. After receiving a phone call from the director, Martin was invited to his home in England , where Martin was performing stand-up at the time. While accepting his hospitality, the actor-comedian had dinner and played chess with Kubrick . Known as an aficionado of the game, Kubrick decisively defeated Martin. Something cinephiles would yearn for, Martin received a luxurious, behind-the-curtains look at Kubrick's expansive archive room that featured reviews of his films and prints of 2001 . The Martin-Kubrick meeting took a bizarre turn inside the director's poolroom. As told in Nick de Semlyen 's book, Wild and Crazy Guys , Martin got a whiff of a horrific odor. He discovered that one of Kubrick's dogs defecated in the nearby hallway. In perfect inscrutable Kubrick fashion , he never acknowledged the malodor.

Ultimately, this was the closest that Martin and Kubrick ever came to collaborating on a project together. Eyes Wide Shut would eventually be realized posthumously in 1999, starring the real-life couple, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman . The shooting of Eyes Wide Shut encapsulated the Stanley Kubrick mystique that has mesmerized the film community for decades. Legend states that the film's production, which lasted roughly 400 days , was responsible for the eventual breakup of Cruise and Kidman. Months before the film was released in July 1999, Kubrick died of a heart attack just days after screening the final cut of Eyes Wide Shut to his family and its stars. Contributing to the ominous nature of his death and the legend-filled production, speculation ensued over whether the film the public viewed was Kubrick's completed vision.

Why a Stanley Kubrick & Steve Martin Team Up Would Work

If there was ever any doubt about Kubrick's sense of humor being intentional, his passion for comedy films and interest in casting a comic actor for Eyes Wide Shut proves his comedic sensibilities. Kubrick excelled at extracting humor in the most harrowing circumstances, such as nuclear destruction or the vicious berating of a drill instructor. The director's proposal for the Bill Hartford character to possess a "comedian's resilience" is a remarkable insight into the novella's text and the dynamic of a man disturbed by his wife's revelation of an adulterous encounter. The suppressed angst and malaise associated with comics could have matched the paranoid dread and nightmarish aura of Bill's odyssey. For a comedian like Martin , Kafkaesque situations, like the premise of Eyes Wide Shut , are prime for stand-up material. While not a comedian, Cruise, a figure who vowed to convey a pristine image in the face of his ties to Scientology, tapped into this phenomenon: a man who unraveled once his Utopian worldview was shattered.

Steve Martin and Martin Short Almost Starred in a Bizarre Unmade David Lynch Comedy

Steve Martin's greatest attribute as a comedic actor is his ability to unravel. His performance as Neal Page, a mild-mannered ad executive who is sent on countless detours on his trip home for Thanksgiving, in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles serves as a trial run for his hypothetical performance in Eyes Wide Shut . The humor, as well as the relatable quality of the film, stems from Neal turning increasingly irritable because of a string of disastrous travel mishaps and the incessant boisterous behavior of his travel companion, Del Griffith ( John Candy ). Kubrick's direction would channel Martin's rage internally , which would allow for an engaging artistic tension between the two. The actor's dramatic experience , notably in David Mamet 's neo-noir, The Spanish Prisoner , proves his chops. More pertinent to his hypothetical performance in Eyes Wide Shut is the rich expressiveness in his roles in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles , The Jerk , and Roxanne . The characters he brings to the screen are layered and packed with carefully thought-out creative choices like his work in It's Complicated .

Stanley Kubrick had already worked with one Inspector Jacques Clouseau in Peter Sellers . Steve Martin, who would later carry the mantle of Sellers' iconic Pink Panther character in a remake in the 2000s, would have been equally riveting as Sellers was in Lolita and Dr. Strangelove . A filmography filled to the brim with fascinating and provocative performances, Martin in Eyes Wide Shut could have redefined how we view his screen persona. Instead, Tom Cruise gave a spellbinding performance that challenged our expectations of the beloved movie star. All we're left with is a chess match between two unlikely near-collaborators: Steve Martin and Stanley Kubrick.

Eyes Wide Shut is available to rent on Prime Video in the U.S.

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - MAY 05: (L-R) Kevin Hart and Tom Brady speak onstage during G.R.O.A.T The Greatest Roast Of All Time: Tom Brady for the Netflix is a Joke Festival at The Kia Forum on May 05, 2024 in Inglewood, California. (Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for Netflix)

It was a long night for Tom Brady at his live Netflix comedy roast, as it was for the rest of us watching from home.

Starting with a bloody OJ Simpson jersey and ending with Brady smashing an iPhone on stage, the Netflix live event, “The Greatest Roast of All-Time: Tom Brady,” honored the seven-time Super Bowl champion. The modern-day legend faced his biggest challenge yet: being roasted by comedians and his former NFL teammates.

The QB took so many hits regarding his failed marriage to supermodel Gisele Bündchen, which was surprising in moments where it didn’t seem to let up for a single moment, bringing some of the evening’s biggest laughs. Nonetheless, the “joke of the night” came from the GOAT himself when addressing Kim Kardashian and referencing her ex-husband Kanye West: “I know Kim was terrified to be here tonight. Not because of this, but because her kids are at home with their dad.”

When Kardashian took the stage to toast Brady, she was met with an onslaught of audible boos, but host Kevin Hart came to her aid.

Part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest , “Greatest Roasts of All Time: Tom Brady” featured the former quarterback, known for his 20 seasons with the New England Patriots and three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, taking humorous jabs from some of the biggest names in comedy. Hosted by Hart and roastmaster Jeff Ross, the event included Brady’s former teammates Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and Drew Bledsoe, as well as stand-up comics Tom Segura, Nikki Glaser, Andrew Schulz, Bert Kreischer, Tony Hinchcliffe, Sam Jay and more.

“We’re here to roast the greatest quarterback of all time,” Hart quipped. “Oh, wait, Joe Montana’s here?”

Brady made a grand entrance onto a stage surrounded by his former teammates, exclaiming to the crowd, “Are you guys ready? It’s game time. Let’s go!”

VIP tables, occupied by Chelsea Handler, Jim Gaffigan, Shane Gillis and Netflix executives Ted Sarandos and Bela Bajaria, encircled the stage, adding to the star-studded atmosphere of the event.

Brady’s former teammate Gronkowski took the spotlight with the most peculiar moments of the night, delivering a sometimes incoherent barrage of jokes that culminated in smashing a glass on the stage, causing it to shatter and send shards flying onto nearby tables.

Here are some of the 30 best jokes and craziest moments from the special (in no particular order):

  • “This is where Jerry Buss laid his dick out. This was called the Fucking Forum.” – Kevin Hart
  • “Tom brought Boston with him tonight. I’ve never seen Inglewood so white. It looks like a Bruce Springsteen concert just let out. This used to be the home of the Lakers; now it’s the home of the Quakers.” – Kevin Hart
  • “It’s been two years since Tom has gotten divorced. And since then, Tom’s been fucking. Tom has been putting that two-inch tool to work. Tom has been fucking so much; his dick has gotten CTE.” — Kevin Hart
  • “You know who else fucked that coach? Gisele. She fucked that karate man…. eight karate classes a day, and she’s still a white belt?” — Kevin Hart
  • “Chelsea Handler is here… Speaking of Black dick, Kim is here tonight.”
  • “I’ve just come from hell. Aaron Hernandez says hello.” — Jeff Ross
  • “I had to dress like OJ because I’m about to kill this white bitch right here.” — Jeff Ross
  • “You really put the Jizz in Gisele.” — Jeff Ross
  • “I really wanted Kevin [Hart] to host because he already looks like a deflated football.” — Jeff Ross
  • “Surely, if Mark Twain were around today, he would call you a N…. a national treasure.” — Jeff Ross
  • “I love you, Dana; you’re like Michael Vick but with human beings.” — Jeff Ross
  • “We’re doing it Boston-style tonight. You know, it’s going to marathon, and somebody’s gonna bomb.” — Jeff Ross
  • “We wanted to roast you in Florida, but because of your governor, we wouldn’t have been able to call you gay.” — Jeff Ross
  • “Tom Brady. Five-time Super Bowl MVP, most career wins, most career touchdowns. You have seven rings — well, eight, now that Gisele gave hers back. The only thing dumber than saying yes to this roast was when you said, ‘Hey babe, you should try jiu-jitsu.’” — Nikki Glaser
  • “I’m the best decision your organization has ever made. Would you like a massage?”– Jeff Ross
  • “Why the fuck didn’t we cheat when I was there?” — Randy Moss
  • “The only difference between Tom Brady and Hitler is that Hitler stuck with his wife until the end.” — Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer
  • “I love your movies, or as I like to call them, short films.” — Nikki Glaser towards Kevin Hart
  • “Your ex-wife’s new boyfriend can kick your ass while eating hers.” — Nikki Glaser
  • “Tom also lost $30 million in crypto… Tom, how did you fall for that? Even Gronk was like, ‘Me know that’s not real money.” — Nikki Glaser
  • “That’s why Dana [White] is here, so you can learn how to fuck a Brazilian out of half their purse. Sorry, that was a Gisele quote” — Andrew Schulz
  • “Or, as I like to call him, Leonardo DiCaprio‘s ex-girlfriend’s ex-husband.” — Julian Edelman
  • “This stage has seen more trauma than a Kennedy on the campaign trail.” — Andrew Schulz
  • “ACL is the only injury Gronk can spell.” — Andrew Schulz
  • “Nikki, who wrote that? Where was that, your entire career?” — Tony Hinchcliffe
  • “Bert Kreischer is a king. He looks like the Tiger King, and the Liver King only ate Burger King and had a liver that looked like Martin Luther King, who got beat up by Rodney King.” — Tony Hinchcliffe
  • “Your Super Bowl ring is just like my strap-on; just because you put it on doesn’t mean it’s real.” — Sam Jay
  • “My kids now excuse themselves to the bathroom by saying I have to go take a Brady.” — Peyton Manning
  • “Despite everything we’ve seen here tonight, Gronk was actually useful on the field. Although the bar for Patriots tight ends was pretty low back then: block, catch, don’t murder.” — Tom Brady
  • “You retired, then you came back, and then you retired again. I mean, I get it, it’s hard to walk away from something that’s not your pregnant girlfriend.” — Nikki Glaser

Sigourney Weaver

Sci-fi legend Sigourney Weaver has gone up against face-hugging aliens and squared off against colonizers on lush green planets, but she has never faced stormtroopers and galactic bounty hunters.

Weaver is in talks to join the cast of The Mandalorian & Grogu , the first Star Wars movie to go into production since 2019’s  Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The Mandalorian  launched in November 2019 as the flagship show for Disney+, with the character then known as Baby Yoda becoming a pop culture phenomenon. Pedro Pascal leads the series as Din Djarin, also known as The Mandalorian, a warrior who reluctantly (at first) cares for Grogu. The show’s third season bowed last year, and it has launched a number of spinoffs, including  The Book of Boba Fett  and  Ahsoka , which has a second season in development.

Pascal is expected to return as Djarin, although it’s unclear in what capacity, as the actor has full schedule. For one, he will begin shooting The Fantastic Four for sister Disney division Marvel Studios beginning at the end of July.

Weaver, a three-time Academy Award nominee, is perhaps best known as the longtime face of the Alien franchise, starting with 1979’s Ridley Scott sci-fi horror classic, then establishing her butt-kicking bonafides with James Cameron’s 1986 sequel, Aliens . She starred in two more after that. Her portrayal of maternal monster fighter Ripley proved to be a trailblazer, whose path other screen heroines have since followed.

She later reunited with Cameron Avatar and Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water , with more on the way.

Weaver also notched another pop culture landmark with her appearances in the Ghostbusters movies in the 1980s. She reprised her role of Dana Barrett in the 2021 reboot, Ghostbusters: Afterlife . She is repped by UTA.

The InSneider newsletter was first to report Weaver’s involvement.

Hacks Calls Out Tom Cruise’s Coconut Cake – What to Know About the Famous Dessert Cruise Gifts Every Christmas

The coveted "Tom Cruise cake" is sent to the movie star's A-list friends during the holiday season

Hacks is back and full of just as many pop culture references as before.

The first episode of the third season aired on Max on Thursday, May 2. Just like in previous seasons, the jokes were full of witty one-liners and name drops, with one scene focused entirely on Tom Cruise ’s elusive coconut cake.

In the season 3 premiere of the Emmy-winning show , Deborah Vance ( Jean Smart ) finds herself bouncing between red carpet events and photo shoots before unintentionally reuniting with Ava ( Hannah Einbinder ). Ava is her former writer who pushed Deborah to create a comedy special, but was subsequently fired in a push from Deborah to grow her own career.

Max/YouTube

The two run into each other in an awkward elevator ride. When Deborah steps off at her floor, the stiff conversation seems to end — until Ava knocks on her door.

Ava eggs Deborah on to quip about her appearance, as she had always done when the pair worked together, but stops the conversation when she spots a baked good over Deborah’s shoulder.

“Is that the Tom Cruise coconut cake?” Ava asks.

“How the hell did you know that?” Deborah replies with a furrowed brow.

“It’s a famous cake,” Ava replies matter-of-factly. “Every Christmas he sends one to his entire contact list. I’ve read about it for years. Kirsten Dunst said it was one of the best cakes she’s ever had and she was in Marie Antoinette .”

She continues on to ask her former boss about how it tastes and is shocked when she replies that she isn’t planning to try it.

“So, no one’s eating the Tom Cruise coconut cake?” Ava says, eyeing the cake in a not-so-subtle manner.

Deborah sees through her question, rolls her eyes and offers Ava a slice, which Ava eagerly accepts.

“For the record, I’m not a Tom Cruise guy and I think leading man culture is really toxic but I do want to see what this tastes like simply from an anthropological standpoint,” Ava rambles before trying the dessert.

She dives in, taking a big bite out of the huge slice she carved out for herself, immediately rolling her eyes back in disbelief. “Yup, yup,” she says, pointing emphatically at the cake.

The Hacks reference is just a sliver of the lore around the Top Gun star’s coveted cake.

Every holiday season, Cruise is known to send the $126 white chocolate coconut bundt cake made by Doan's Bakery in Woodland Hills, Calif. to his famous friends, including Tom Hanks , Jon Hamm and Rosie O'Donnell . The bundt is spread with cream cheese frosting and then covered with toasted coconut flakes. It is even available for shipping on Goldbelly for those who aren't local — or on Cruise's list.

The legend of the “Tom Cruise cake” grows every year as A-listers brag about the arrival of (or mourn no longer receiving ) the coconut treat.

New episodes of Hacks  will be available to stream on Thursdays on Max.

The news this morning of the death of entertainment journalist Sam Rubin has touched a nerve in Los Angeles, with his home base KTLA going live and commercial free with remembrances and tributes from the top of the 1 o’clock news through the station’s regularly-scheduled programming at 2 p.m. and right into the KTLA News at 3 .

Among those calling in was Henry Winkler, who was one of Rubin’s favorite guests.

I’m in Canada right now and they’re calling me and [I go], “Oh man, not my buddy” He was just a real sweetheart of a guy.” Trejo then asked the anchors to let him know about memorial services saying, “If I can, I’ll be there.”

Actor Greg Grunberg phoned in to pay tribute, dubbing Rubin “a mensch with a microphone,” and choking up as he thanked the anchors for allowing him time on-air to remember is friend. Grunberg also took to Twitter to express his feelings.
