Dodge Journey: Valve, positive crankcase ventilation (PCV)

Description

The PCV valve contains a spring loaded plunger. The plunger meters the amount of crankcase vapors routed into the combustion chamber based on intake manifold vacuum.

When the engine is not operating or during an engine backfire, the spring forces the plunger back against the seat. This prevents vapors from flowing through the valve.

When the engine is at idle or cruising, high manifold vacuum is present. At these times manifold vacuum is able to completely compress the spring and pull the plunger to the top of the valve. In this position there is minimal vapor flow through the valve.

During periods of moderate intake manifold vacuum the plunger is only pulled part way back from the inlet.

This results in maximum vapor flow through the valve.

Diagnosis and Testing

WARNING: apply parking brake and/or block wheels before performing any test or adjustment with the engine operating.

1. With engine idling, remove the hose from the PCV valve. If the valve is not plugged, a hissing noise will be heard as air passes through the valve. A strong vacuum should also be felt when a finger is placed over the valve inlet.

2. Install hose on PCV valve. Remove the make-up air hose from the air plenum at the rear of the engine.

Hold a piece of stiff paper (parts tag) loosely over the end of the make-up air hose.

3. After allowing approximately one minute for crankcase pressure to reduce, the paper should draw up against the hose with noticeable force. If the engine does not draw the paper against the grommet after installing a new valve, replace the PCV valve hose.

4. Turn the engine off. Remove the PCV valve from intake manifold. The valve should rattle when shaken.

5. Replace the PCV valve and retest the system if it does not operate as described in the preceding tests. Do not attempt to clean the old PCV valve.

1. Remove the engine cover.

2. Remove the hose from the PCV valve.

3. Unscrew the PCV valve.

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve is located under the intake manifold on the right rear bank of the engine.

1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (3) from PCV valve (2).

2. Unscrew PCV valve (2) from valve cover (1).

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve is located on the end of the rear valve cover.

1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (2) from PCV valve (3).

2. Unscrew PCV valve (3) from valve cover (1).

Installation

1. Lubricate the O-ring on the valve.

2. Install the PCV valve and tighten the valve to 8.1 N.m (72 in. lbs.).

3. Install the hose.

4. Install engine cover.

1. Install positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve (2) to valve cover (1) and tighten to 4 N.m (35 in. lbs.).

2. Install positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (3) to PCV valve (2).

Tips for Finding the PCV Valve Location in Your Car

The PCV valve location is most commonly on the top of the engine, where you can get at it very easily. Despite its size, the PCV valve has a large part to play in the overall efficiency of the starting and running of your vehicle. This valve commonly fails and must be replaced every few years. Finding the PCV valve location is very easy, when you remember a few tips.

Located on Valve Cover

In most makes and models of vehicles today, the PCV valve is on the valve cover. Depending on the exact model, it may be on the driver's side or passenger's side valve cover.

Connects Crankcase to Engine Block

You will notice that there will be a vacuum tube attached to the PCV valve, that connects it to the intake manifold. To help you locate the valve, follow any vacuum tubes you see going to the valve cover.

Look Behind Intake Manifold

Some larger engines have the PVC valve located in behind the intake manifold. Engines that are 5.0 liter or more are usually configured this way.

Replace if Bad

Each time you change the oil, you should check the PCV valve. Shake the valve and you should hear a rattling sound within the valve itself. If not, then it is bad and needs to be replaced.

2011-2012 3.6 PCV Valve

The stock PCV valve on the 2011-2012 Journeys with the 3.6L engine appears to be no longer available.  These stock PCV valves have three bolt holes that fasten them to the rear valve cover.  In order to replace the PCV valve, you need to use one for a 2013+ (only two bolt holes) AND change the hose/tube that runs from the PCV valve to the upper intake manifold.

These parts from Rock Auto worked well on my 2011:

Think the design change was to address an issue or just cheaper for Dodge?

One bolt less is small savings on part, although labour saving on assembly.  But brand new injection molds for part to be made wouldn’t be cheap.

Doesnt sound like cost saving really. 3.6 is used across the FCA Stelantis line up, maybe stronger part for Jeep’s etc.

Havent changed mine yet, bought a Rockauto after market recently.

I can only speculate.  I replaced this old-style PCV valve because it was leaking.  On the other hand, I've had two new-style PCV valves on other 3.6 engines that have never leaked.  Maybe the re-design was to address that issue.

Why does hose have to be changed as well. Different size hose barbs.? Or part orientation, curious.

Gates makes a lot of oem stuff, generally not bad.  I hate taking chances on critical electrical parts like crank or cam sensors, if oem is only 20% or so more, and in stock  I usually buy it. 

They changed the location of the PCV barb.  That's why it takes a different hose.  The old style PCV barb points back towards the firewall.  The newer style barb points up.

The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is an engine component typically located on the engine valve cover or intake manifold. PCV valves are designed to direct oil vapor and excess pressure from the crankcase back into the intake manifold where it's burned off through the combustion process. PCV valves are designed to remain closed to minimize oil loss through evaporation, and open with the rising force of oil vapor to reduce internal engine pressures. The recirculating of oil vapor through the PCV valve helps reduce harmful emissions and increases combustion efficiency. By regulating the flow of excess oil vapor through the crankcase, the PCV valve also helps prevent the buildup of oil pressure in the engine, which can cause excessive force on seals and gaskets which could otherwise cause a damaged seal or gasket and an oil leak. Over time, a clogged or malfunctioning PCV valve can cause increased oil consumption, poor fuel economy, rough idling, oil leaks, or an active Check Engine light. It is often easy to test a PCV valve to determine if it is functioning properly by removing and shaking the valve. If you can hear the check ball moving inside the valve, it means that it is free and able to open and close as needed. Hello everyone. Doing 100k maintenance and can’t find the PCV valve. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks

Thank you. After two hours looking for it, I finally found it. It was front and center. After removing the engine cover, it was up front under the a foam cover. I just disconnected the plug and pulled the foam off. There it was and only took 1 min to change out!
