The Rajwada's seven-story facade is astounding in its opulence.

Kanch Mandir

The spectacular Kanch Mandir made entirely of glass and mirrors is one of the prime tourist attractions in Indore. Early in the 20th century, wealthy businessman Seth Hukumchand constructed this Jain temple. Everything in the room, including the doors, floors, ceiling, and even the paintings and murals are made using glass. The ceiling is embellished with glass lamps and cut-glass chandeliers, while patterned ceramic tiles can be seen through the floor. The murals reflect tales from the Mahabharata and Jain literature. The three Tirthankara statues - Adinath, Shantinath, and Chandraprabha - made of dazzling black onyx are multiplied to an infinite number in the Mandir's distinctive glass room on the top floor.

Bada Ganpati

The Bada Ganapati Temple is located in a busy neighbourhood west of the Kanch Mandir and is true to its name. The 8-m-tall Ganesha idol was placed in this modest temple in 1875 by a resident of Ujjain. In addition to bricks and lime, the idol is supposedly made of fenugreek seed, soil gathered from the seven Mokshapuris, or holy Hindu pilgrimages, (Ayodhya, Mathura, Mayapuri, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika, and Dwarka), as well as the powder of five gems, or Pancha Ratna, (diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, and topaz).

Lalbagh Palace

Lalbagh Palace is one of the most impressive structures of the Holkar dynasty. Spread over 71.63 acres, the Palace was built between 1886 and 1921, during the reigns of Tukoji Rao II, Shivaji Rao and Tukoji Rao III. The architecture of Lal Bagh Palace reflects the European style and the imposing gate of the palace is built as a replica of the main gate of Buckingham palace; only it is twice as large.

Annapurna Mandir

The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai served as the inspiration for Annapurna Mandir. The temple is situated near Lalbagh Palace and its complex boasts an impressive entryway with four life-size elephants supporting an intricate Gopuram ( a structure of tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of a temple) which is typical of Dravidian temples in south India. Hindu gods and goddesses are depicted in minute plaster carvings that cover the entire Gopuram. The complex's focal point is the main temple, which is devoted to Annapurna Devi. It has a pink dome and colourful reliefs from Hindu mythology decorating its walls.

Khajrana Ganesh Temple

Rani Ahilyabai Holkar built the Khajrana Ganesha Temple of Indore. Huge crowds of people typically visit this temple on Wednesday and Sunday to offer prayers. According to the legend, the idol was hidden from Aurangzeb in a well. In 1735, Ahilyabai Holkar of the Holkar dynasty of the Maratha Empire retrieved the idol from the well and had a temple built in its place. It is a local saying that once a devotee bow down to Ganesha, all their desires are granted by the lord. Vinayak Chathurthi, the primary festival is celebrated in the temple in a magnificent way in the months of August and September.

Gulawat Valley

How to reach Indore?

By Air: The airport in Indore is located 10 kilometres west of the city. Flights to Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal, Pune, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Jaipur, and Kolkata are available every day.

By Road: Two national highways, NH-3, which connects Agra to Mumbai, and NH- 59, which connects Ahmedabad to Indore, meet in Indore. Most locations in Madhya Pradesh are accessible by road. The Sarwate bus stop is close to the train station, and the Gangwal bus stop is three kilometres to the west of Chhatri Bagh. Indore, the second-largest city in Madhya Pradesh, has been a buzzing trade center since ancient times. Located on the edge of the Malwa plateau in Central India, Indore city was founded in 1715 by local landlords and named after the Indreshwar temple that they built a few years later.

The Rajwada palace, built by Malhar Rao Holkar of the Holkar dynasty in 1747, is a seven-story royal residence. However, it has gotten a facelift recently, and is a marvelous architectural space that will take you back in time.

Built between 1886 and 1921 by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar, the gates of the Lal Bagh Palace are said to have been imported from London and modeled after those of Buckingham Palace. Sheesh Mahal & Kaanch Mandir

The palace also has a rose garden which is one of the finest in India. There is a lot of similarity in the style of architecture with the Versailles Palace with Italian marble columns, grand chandeliers, rich Persian carpets, nymphs on the ceiling, Belgium stained glass windows, Greek mythological reliefs and Italian style wall paintings. This made me remember my visit one day trip to Brussels and the beautiful palaces.

Sarafa Bazar 

Sarafa Bazar is one of the famous places in Indore. Sarafa Bazar is a place which offers two different experiences at the very same place but at different times of the day. During the day it is a jewellery market like any other in the city however after the day’s activities are over, this very same market turns into food heaven. The street is very similar to Manek Chowk of Ahmedabad whose history is known through Ahmedabad Heritage Walk . 

Sarafa Bazaar, Indore offers region-specific, mouth-watering dishes which satisfy one’s appetite for awesome food. • Kopra Patties – Native to Indore is Khopra Patties which is a snack item, deep-fried, to be eaten with lots of green and tamarind chutney. Available at Vijay Chat House at both locations in Sarafa Bazar and also at 56 Dukan. Out of all the places to visit in Indore and things to do in Indore, this should not be missed.
• Bhutte Ka Kees –  This dish mainly looks like Upma, made from Corn cob. Green chillies and coriander add to its taste. Available in many shops at both Sarafa Bazar and 56 Dukan
• Shikanji – Shikanji usually is a lemon drink however Shikanji of Indore is quite different from the conventional one. It’s a creamy drink of milk with lots of dry fruits.
• Garadu – It’s a type of Yam, like sweet potato especially grown during winters. It is deep-fried and eaten as chat with a good blend of chutneys.
• Sabudana Khichdi – Another delectable item to have in Indore is Sabudana Khichdi. It is loaded with deep-fried potato crisps and chutney. Easily available in all food markets in Indore.
• Dal Bafla – Very similar to the Dal Baati of Rajasthan, is Daal Bafla of Malwa region where Indore belongs. It’s more like a Baati however Bafla is boiled.
• Mawa Bati – It’s typically Gulab Jamun but a dry version. This is available in all sweet shops in Indore.

13th edition of PHDCCI’s International Heritage Tourism Conclave to be held in Indore

The conclave will be inaugurated by the Governor of Madhya Pradesh followed by an array of notable speakers and engaging sessions

The conclave is being organized at Hotel Sayaji Indore on July 12 with the support of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Rajasthan Tourism, IndiGo and IRCTC. ‘Care for Heritage’ will be the theme of PHDCCI’s 13th edition of International Heritage Tourism Conclave.

Over the years, PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHDCCI) has successfully organized 12 editions of International Heritage Tourism Conclave (IHTC), across various states in India which have significantly promoted India’s cultural heritage and driven tourism growth.

Chief Guest – Mangubhai Patel, Hon’ble Governor of Madhya Pradesh will inaugurate the Conclave. Joining him as Guests of Honour will be Manisha Saxena (IAS), Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and Sheo Shekhar Shukla (IAS), Principal Secretary – Tourism and Culture, Government of Madhya Pradesh.

A highlight of the event will be the release of a report titled ‘Heritage Tourism as a path to Sustainable Tourism’, jointly developed by PHDCCI and its Knowledge Partner, KPMG.

The Conclave will feature an array of notable speakers and engaging sessions, beginning with a classical dance recital by students of Garima Vidya Vihar Senior Secondary School.

A discussion on the role of women in preserving cultural legacy will be hosted by Shalini S Sharma, Assistant Secretary General, PHDCCI, with guests Vaibhav Chauhan, Director of The City Palace, Jaipur and Jaigarh Fort and Anjchita Nair, Co-Founder & CEO, Culture.

Ajay Verma, CEO – Heritage and Events, Sabhyata Foundation (Dalmia Group), will discuss the role of enabling policies in preserving heritage with a focus on Red Fort. Author and historian Swapna Liddle will share her perspective on the public’s role in heritage preservation. Kishwar Desai, Chair of The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust, will present a case study on the Partition Museum in Amritsar.

A panel discussion on the role of technology in preserving heritage will be moderated by Prof. Mohan Raghavan, Head, Department of Heritage Science Technology, IIT Hyderabad, with panelists Priti Ramakrishnan, Co-Founder & COO, ImmverseAI and Raghava Krishna, Founder and CEO, Brhat.

The event will conclude with a session on preserving heritage through art by Wajid Khan, Artist, Sculptor, Inventor, Patent Holder and hosted by Atul Singh, Chairman – MP Chapter, Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India.

The delegates will also have the opportunity to participate in the Rajwada Reminiscence Heritage Walk, curated by Ritik and Shashank, Co-Founders of Udte Kabootar, offering a unique exploration of Indore’s historical treasures.

Following Ujjain's Mahakal Lok success, MP Tourism plans three new religious sites

N ew Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): Following the success of Ujjain 's newly developed ' Mahakal Lok ', Madhya Pradesh is expanding its religious tourism efforts with plans to develop three new religious destinations. The launch of Mahakal Lok has significantly boosted religious tourism in the state, with visitor numbers soaring from 32.1 million in 2022 to 112 million in 2023.

The state government is now planning to develop three more religious tourist attractions: Devi Lok in Salkanpur, Hanuman Lok in Chhindwara, and Ram Raja Lok in Orchha.

"There has been a tremendous increase in footfall, primarily from religious tourists. As you know, we host two major Jyotirlingas at Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar, and the newly created Mahakal Lok is attracting numerous tourists from India and abroad," Bidisha Mukherjee, Additional Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, told ANI.

Mukherjee also announced that, similar to Mahakal Lok , new initiatives are underway for Devi Lok, Hanuman Lok, and Ram Raja Lok to further boost tourism in the state.

"We are going to develop 'Devi Lok' in Salkanpur, which is Shakti temple; 'Hanuman Lok' in Chhindwara; and 'Ram Raja Lok' in Orchha, which is famous for Ram Raja temple. These new projects aim to build on the success of Mahakal Lok and attract even more tourists," Mukherjee said.

The MP Tourism Board is also engaging with international embassies to increase global tourist inflow. Scandinavian countries have shown a keen interest in Madhya Pradesh's local festivals, including the Khajuraho Dance Festival and the Tansen Festival.

"We are in dialogue with various embassies, particularly in Finland. We were astonished to see there were many tourists who had been to our 'Narmada Parikrama'. The embassies are very enthusiastic about our major festivals," Mukherjee added.

Additionally, the state is seeing a rise in popularity for rural homestays, with the tourism board offering subsidies to local tribes for creating authentic accommodation experiences for tourists.

"To enhance safety for international and national tourists, we have trained over 10,000 women through the Nirbhaya Fund in various livelihood streams. Madhya Pradesh is becoming a preferred destination for solo female travellers. If you come to Madai town, you can hire a female gipsy rider. So you can take her for a female gipsy ride to the wildlife sanctuaries and the national parks. If you want a guide, you can have a woman guide; the tourism board, in collaboration with the Nirbhya Fund, has trained them in all the major streams that were predominantly done by their male counterparts," Mukherjee explained.

The state also recently launched the 'PM Shri Tourism Air Service,' which connects eight cities: Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Rewa, Ujjain , Gwalior, Singrauli, and Khajuraho. This initiative, in partnership with M/s Jet Serve Aviation Private Limited under a public-private partnership model, aims to make travel within the state more accessible for tourists. (ANI)
