The current status of your passport is Origination Scan

V.O. kept my passport , I 129, i 797C at the time of interview in the month of march 2012 and on 28 of March i received mail from VFS asking me to submit some more docs , i submitted my docs by 9th April and since then i am trakcking my passport and now the new status is “The current status of your passport is Origination Scan”

, what dose this mean ??

Can any body describe exact meaning of Origination scan, showing current passport status?

If your status shows “origination scan”, it means your passport has left the Embassy or Consulate is on its way to the delivery location you have chosen. It is however not available yet. Only when the status shows “ready for pick up”, it means you can go to the CITIC branch you have chosen to pick up your passport. Please do not go to your delivery location if your status does not show “ready for pick up” as it means your passport has not reached its final destination for pick up.

U.S. Visa Passport Tracking: Processing & Return of Passport

Important information about the application process.

us travel docs passport status origination scan

When you schedule your visa appointment, you’ll be given a few choices regarding how you’d like your passport returned when your visa is issued. You may be able to pick it up yourself, or you have your passport delivered to your home or a pickup location.

You must track the process to know when to expect your passport to be available for pickup or delivery. Here’s how to follow along with the steps of the passport tracking process.

How Do You Apply for a U.S. Visa? FAQs Answered

You need a valid reason to apply for a U.S. visa .

You can apply for a short-term visitor visa if your intention is to take a short trip to the United States. If you want to stay for longer, work in the country, marry a U.S. citizen, or invest in a U.S. business, you need to choose the visa type that suits your situation.

How Do You Know If You Qualify for the Visa Waiver Program?

The U.S. visa waiver program waives the visa requirement for certain types of visits. If you live in a participating country and you intend to stay in the United States for 90 days or less, you may be able to enter without a visa.

The visa waiver program covers tourism and business-related visits , so long as you won’t be directly financially profiting from your business-related visit to the United States.

If you live in a visa waiver-participating country and have authorization through ESTA, you may be able to enter the United States without a visa.

What Is ESTA?

Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a global network that pre-approves travelers from certain countries who intend to visit the United States for short periods.

If you plan to visit the United States for 90 days or less, you don’t need a visa if you receive ESTA approval prior to travel. ESTA makes traveling faster, more efficient, and less expensive than using the traditional visa system, especially when a visa isn’t always necessary.

ESTA authorization is currently available to nationals or citizens of the following countries:

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom

Why Do I Need a Valid Passport To Apply for a Visa?

A passport shows proof of your identity and your country of origin. It includes a photo ID to clarify that it belongs to you.

Your U.S. visa is placed inside your passport. It contains the dates of validity for your passport. When you enter or exit a country, officials are able to verify that you are who you say you are using your passport and that you have proper approval to travel to the place you’re visiting using your visa.

While you’re in the United States, your passport with your visa and your I-94 serves as proof that you’re visiting the country.

Can You Apply for a New Visa With an Expired Passport?

Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months from the date when you applied for a new visa. If your passport expires after you receive your visa, but your visa is still valid, you can use your valid visa in your old passport to enter so long as you also travel with your new passport. The combination of the two documents will serve as proof of your eligibility to travel and your visa.

When Will I Get My Passport Back?

When some countries issue a visa, they take your current passport and send it away for an official visa stamp. If you apply for a visa in India, you must wait to receive your passport after your visa application has been approved.

When you apply, you can select to have your passport delivered to you with tracking via an approved passport delivery courier. There are no delivery fees if you choose to have your passport sent to a valid delivery address. They’re already included in the cost of your visa. You can also choose to pick up your passport from a location on a list of approved destinations.

It usually takes seven to 10 business days from the date of your approval to get your passport back. You can use the CEACvisa application status-checking tool to check the status online.

The tracking system will give you up-to-date information about the case status of your visa application. You’ll be notified when your visa is issued and either sent to the courier service for delivery or available for pickup at the location you chose.

Enter your passport number and click “Track My Passport.” If your passport status shows “Origination Scan,” that means your passport is on its way to the delivery location. If you chose to pick your passport up in person, wait until the status says “Ready for Pick Up.” This means your passport is waiting for you at your chosen pickup location.

Do You Have To E-File Your Application Form?

E-filing is required to apply for a nonimmigrant visa. E-filing will also let you track the status of your visa application through the online portal.

What Does Administrative Processing Mean?

Administrative processing is a review visa applications undergo after they’ve been processed the standard way. Administrative processing is used after a visa interview if the U.S. Department of State has any concerns or information they need to verify after your interview appointment.

This doesn’t automatically mean that you’ll be denied a visa, but it does mean you’ll need to wait longer than usual to receive a decision.

What Is EVU.S.?

The Electronic Visa Update System (EVU.S.) is an online visa updating system used by citizens of China who hold long-term B visas that allow them to visit the United States.

EVU.S. allows visa holders to update their biographical information. B visa holders are required to register with EVU.S. before they can travel.

Approval usually only takes a few minutes. In some cases, it may take as long as 72 hours.

How Do You Read and Understand Your Nonimmigrant Visa ?

After you receive your visa, you need to check it for errors and make sure it’s valid. You also need to be aware of the expiration date.

If you try to enter the United States past or near the expiration date on your visa, you may be denied admission to the U.S. When you enter the U.S., you will be issued an I-94 . This tells you how long you can stay in the country. If you overstay your authorized period of stay , you may be prohibited from re-entering the United States.

Checking for Errors on Your Visa

Errors on your visa can cause you trouble while traveling. Make sure that all of the information shown is correct. If you accidentally provided incorrect information on a form, you’re responsible for paying to correct your error.

If the authority who processed your visa is responsible for the error (such as misspelling your name), they will fix it at no cost to you. Do not attempt to travel if you discover errors on your visa. Wait for the errors to be resolved.

Understanding Your Visa Expiration Date

Your visa will show the date it was issued as well as the date your visa will expire. The period of validity is the time between those two dates. You will need to travel to the U.S. prior to the expiration date on your visa. You can remain in the U.S. beyond the expiration date on your visa so long as your I-94 has not expired. It is the I-94 that authorizes you to stay in the U.S. not the visa.

A ten-year B visa does not grant you permission to remain in the U.S. for ten years. It simply means you can travel to the U.S. over the next ten years. Most people that enter with B visas are authorized to stay in the U.S. for six months.

If you’d like to stay in the United States for longer, you need to apply to extend your stay with USCIS at least 45 days before your nonimmigrant status expires. Extensions usually add another 6 months to your authorized stay.

You may be deported if you overstay your authorized stay. Even if you are not deported, you could trigger unlawful presence bars or be unable to change or adjust your immigration status in the future. You may also have difficulty attempting to return to the U.S. or applying for a new visa even if you did not trigger an unlawful presence bar.

If you’re granted an extension, you’re allowed to stay until the date you receive in the approval of your extension.

Most of the tools you need to apply for a visa, check the status of your visa application, or track your passport are available through online portals used by the U.S. Department of State or through your local U.S. embassy or consulate.

Most of the Visa status check process is self-service, so you won’t need to wait for a return phone call from the consular office’s call center or a letter in the mail. You’ll have access to information in real-time.

USA Visa Passport Delivery

At the time of scheduling a visa appointment, you can choose from two options for getting your passport back once your visa is issued:

  • Pick Up Option The consulate will deliver your passport to the collection location by courier. As the cost to hold your passport at a pick up location is already included in the visa fee, you don’t have to pay anything additional for the same. You pick up the passport from  US visa collection locations in India .  This option will not deliver the passport to your home, office, or any other personal address. In case you have an urgent travel need, selecting the courier location closer to the interview location may result in faster pick-up time.
  • Premium (Home) Delivery Option For an additional fee of Rs. 500 per applicant, you can get it delivered by courier to your home.  FAQ   You will receive one passport per envelope as separate tracking of every passport is required due to security and safety rules. There is no discount for multiple passport/envelope delivery, either.

Tracking Your Passport

There are various options to track the delivery of the passport:

  • Online:   You can track your passport’s delivery status using the ‘CGI Federal portal’ link, login using your email id and password. Your passport status will get updated in the last block as you see in the below image. To know various status please check the ‘ CGI Portal ‘ link.

If this message hasn’t changed for more than 2 or 3 days then it is wise to visit the passport pick up location in person with the UID, which can be found in the Appointment History section in the ‘CGI Federal portal’ . Click the little rounded plus icon on the left of the recent appointment to view the UID it is a 8 digit number which can be used to check at the pick up location.
  • To check the visa status : Visit “ U.S. Department of State Consular electronic application center ” website choose Non Immigrant Visa as the Visa application type. Enter your DS-160 Case number and know the status.

How long for Issued passport to go from 'no status' to 'origination scan' to 'ready for pick up'?

Can anyone tell me how long your wait was from when the CEAC site showed your visa as ISSUED to ustraveldocs showing the passport status as 'origination scan' then 'ready to pick up'?

From the site for Algeria:   http://www.ustraveldocs.com/dz/dz-niv-passporttrack.asp , it says:

"If your status shows "origination scan", it means your passport has left the U.S. Embassy and is transit to the delivery location you have chosen. It is however not available yet.  Only when the status shows "ready for pick up", it means you can go to the VFS Global Document Collection Center you have chosen to pick up your passport."

Our CEAC went to ISSUED on 1/12/17.  But as of today 1/18/17, there is no status update for the passport (meaning the embassy has not delivered it to the courier).  The courier's office is now closed for the day, so basically we are going into the 7th day, after issuance, without a passport status update.  My fiance chose to pick up the passport in Algiers, so the courier doesn't even have to deliver it.

We just want to know if can happen this way, that the embassy sits on an issued passport for a week before event sending it to the courier.

Just a note that we finally got the visa/passport back!  It took 10 days, and the US Embassy never updated the status on ustraveldocs that it was being sent to the courier.  My fiance did write the courier (VFS Global) for a second time on Sunday, and they finally replied that they had the passport.  Moments later, the status was changed from 'no status' to 'ready for pickup'.  My fiance was able to travel to Algiers and get it, today.

Today marks 56 days of waiting to pick up the visa/passport after written approval at the interview, when they told us it would take 10-15 days.  Incredible!  But we are thankful to finally have the visa in hand!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations!! I'm happy for you. This visa application process is very trying!

may I ask what you mean when you say it took 56 days? That's from the date of the interview?

My fiancé was missing his medical and immunizations, which he got and deleivered all appropriate documentation to the consulate about two weeks ago. I only just now looked on CEAC for an update and it says issued. Are you saying that from the first day you saw your fiancé's say issued, it took 10 working days?

The date on CEAC for case created is one week past the date my fiancé dropped off his medical documents. I'm assuming it'll be 10 working days from that date?

It's so difficult to get real information. It really is best when people like you share personal experiences. Thank you so much!!

Hi BadriLuvJasmin,

Thanks so much!  It is a trying process, and it's hard to know how long anything really takes, because each case is different.  From the date the changed the status to issued on the CEAC site, it took 10 calendar days (which includes Friday and Saturday) before the passport was ready to pick up.  The embassy didn't update the tracker on ustraveldocs when they sent it to the courier (VFS Global).  My fiance wrote VFS on on Sunday and they wrote back, finally, with an email that said that the embassy had delivered the passport; and a few minutes later the ustraveldocs site showed 'ready for pickup'.  He then traveled to Algiers to pick it up the next day.  The 56 days of waiting was the total time from when he was approved at interview until he picked it up (with help to get them to finally issue it, from our congressman's office).

Hopefully you will not have a wait like this, but it's hard to know.  You should have it within 10 business days.  Some people have gotten theirs sooner.  Keep contacting VFS Global if you have questions about it, though; the embassy should deliver it to them, after they issue it.  Good luck!!!

This article discusses all the important information related to:

  • H1B visa status tracker messages
  • How to know if your passport is ready
  • List of documents required for H1B visa

The H1B visa is the golden ticket for foreigners who wish to work in the United States. Every foreigner must specifically work in a field where the American employer cannot find a US-based employee. The American company that employs you may often sponsor the H1B visa and do the paperwork on your behalf. It is important to know what happens and what you have to do to track your passport once the application process for an H1-B visa is done. We have provided all the necessary details in this article. So, read on.

But before learning about the process to track the passport, take a glimpse at what this H-1B visa is all about .

US Visa Passport Tracking: What You Have To Do

Attending the interview to get your H1B visa approval is an important phase that you cannot miss. Once the H1B visa interview is over, you will receive word from your consular office if your visa has been approved. Upon approval, your passport and other crucial supporting documents will be sent for further processing. Your consular office will also fix a date to collect your passport from the location you selected during the interview.

It is very important to keep track of your passport once your interview is over. There are several passport tracking options such as:

1. Instant checking

Visit the website https://www.ustraveldocs.com/in/in-niv-passporttrack.asp . Enter your passport number in the given box and check the status.

2. Online checking

You can logon to https://cgifederal.secure.force.com/?language=English&country=India and check your passport status.

You can track passports using the portal's "Track Passport Delivery" link.

3. Via email

Enter your passport number in the body and subject of the mail and send it to [email protected] . DO NOT add any additional texts to your email. This email link will generate an automatic electronic response with your passport status details.

4. Phone contact

You can call the call centers in India at 91-120 660-2222 or 91-22 6720-9400 .

Timings are:

Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. In the United States you can call at : 1-310-616-5424 .

To check their DS-160 and visa application status, non-immigrant applicants can visit the CEAC website and use their interview location, application ID, or DS-160 barcode number.

How To Check US Visa Status Online

To track your passport's delivery status , utilize the CEAC Visa Status Check tool. This online tool helps check the status of any immigrant or non-immigrant US visa applications.

The step-wise procedure for H1B Visa Passport Status Tracking is as follows:

Step 1 : Log in to the CEAC Visa Status Check portal to know your visa application's current status.

Step 2 : Go to the "Visa Application Type" section and select immigrant Visa (IV) or non-immigrant Visa (NIV).

Step 3 : Select the location where you attended your visa interview.

Step 4 : Enter your Case Number or Application ID.

What is your Application ID?

An Application ID is also called a CEAC barcode, which can be found on the confirmation page of Form DS-160. This ID starts with with AA followed by eight digits.

What is your Case Number?

The case number is assigned to visa applicants by the US Consulate for221g or administrative processing. It is very important to enter the number correctly with the space. If not, you will receive an error notification that says, "Your search did not return any data."

Step 5 : Enter the captcha code depicted in the image.

Your visa status appears on the PC screen as soon as you successfully enter the required details. Follow these steps to get passport after visa approval .

Immigration authorities may contact you by phone or email if additional documents are required. Hence, kindly check your inbox regularly for any such emails or notifications.

The US Consulate or Embassy cannot guarantee the issuance of a US visa before a fixed date due to various factors. Therefore, please do not make travel plans or buy tickets until your visa is finalized.

Understanding your passport tracker messages

You need to understand what the updated status of your passport against your application means. Given below are some sample passport tracker messages and what they mean. If the status of your passport is:

1. Transit to Post

This means your passport location is between the consulate and the CGI location, and the consulate is yet to receive the passport from the CGI.

2. Delivered to Post

This means your passport is delivered to the consulate.

3. Origination Scan

The US Consulate has filled your courier slip. It is waiting for the courier company to collect your passport. The courier company will issue Air Waybill(AWB) or reference codes.

4. Transit from Post

The courier company is transporting your passport to the pick-up location specified in your visa interview. You can check and reconfirm your passport delivery location in your appointment invitation letter from the Consulate.

5. Ready for Pick-up

Your passport is at the pick-up location.

6. Picked Up

This means that you or another person authorized by you has picked up your passport.

Process to collect your passport after your visa approval

You will be shown a list of thirty-three passport locations for visa collection for your visa interview appointment. You can opt for the one that works best for you. A courier service will deliver your visa and passport to the address you specified when you listed the service upon approval. A text message and an email will let you know when your passport is available at the location of your choice.

All the visa courier delivery charges will be included in your visa application fee. Hence you need not pay any extra charges. Choosing a courier location close to your interview location can expedite pick-up if you have an urgent travel need.

Important Information if you are from India

To receive your passport, the Cash on Delivery (CoD) option has been made available at a nominal fee since August 10, 2017. You can get this convenience from Premium Delivery Service.

If your visa has been denied, look up usvisas.state.gov for useful information on waivers and Ineligibilities.

H1B Passport Tracking: How to Know if Your Passport is Ready

Your H1B visa passport tracker messages will indicate your passport status. As we have already mentioned above, if your message says "Origination Scan," your passport is on its way from the consulate to the pick-up location. However, it is not yet available for pick-up. Hence, you should wait until you get a " Ready for Pick Up" message. Only then can you go to the pick-up location and collect your passport.

Here are some important pointers to remember:

  • Know that your passport has not reached its final destination until your passport tracker message reads "Ready for pick-up."
  • Kindly avoid contacting the Embassy or the Consulate regarding your passport delivery. Either office cannot help you regarding the same.
  • Ensure you collect your passport within 14 calendar days from the selected location, or it is returned to the Consulate or the Embassy.
  • Ensure you provide the correct email address and check your mailbox regularly for notifications.
  • Collect your passport within the stipulated time specifically mentioned for your country, especially if you have opted for delivery via courier service.
  • Collect your passport within seven business days if you have selected a Blue Dart courier location.

Due to security and safety regulations, each passport will be delivered in a separate envelope. Additional passports or envelopes will not be discounted.

Important US Travel Supporting Documents Required For H1B Visa Passport

Your H1B passport and visa will not be handed over unless you carry the supporting documents to confirm your identity. Here are the papers and documents you will require to collect your passport from the pick-up location.

If you are going in person:

You need to carry the original copy of a photo id issued by the Government and a photocopy of your appointment letter.

If you send a representative:

If you cannot pick up your passport, you can also send someone- either a family friend or a relative- to pick it up. However, they also need to carry the following documents:

  • Their own photo id issued by the government
  • Photocopy of your (the applicant) photo id.
  • Letter of authority signed by the applicant granting them permission to collect the passport. This letter should have both the applicant's name and the representative's name just as it is mentioned on the id card or document.

If the H1B applicant is below 16 years old:

A representative can be sent to collect the passport if the applicant is a minor below 16 years. The representative should carry:

  • A permission letter signed by either parent
  • Government-approved photo id of the parent who signs the permission letter
  • Representative's own government-issued photo id

If it is a group or family:

One person is enough to represent an entire group or family. The representative should carry one authorization letter, which includes names of all the family or group applicants along with the name of the representative. The person writing the authority letter should also include their government-issued photo id.

To note: All photocopies should be crystal clear, and the writing should be understandable and legible.

Scanning and Uploading Tips

Scanning and submitting documents.

Once Once you have collected all your necessary documents, you must then scan and save documents.

The first step in this is to scan your documents. You must have access to a scanner and a computer with an Internet connection. If you do not have these at home, common places with this type of equipment are libraries, community centers, Internet cafés, and copy shops. You can also use a smart phone to scan.

Please do not mail any documents to the National Visa Center. If you do, you may delay the processing of your case and risk losing any documents you send.

In order to ensure your case does not experience delays in processing, follow these guidelines for when scanning your documents:

File Size and Type

Each individual file (scanned document) must be no larger than 2 MB (megabytes). Your scanned document should be in one file and not broken up into multiple files. If your scanned image is too large, compress it before uploading it. “Zipped” files or password-protected files will not be accepted.

Scan each document as a separate file. If a document contains multiple pages, scan all the pages together into a single file. If the document size is more than 2 MB, compress the file or attempt to scan again at a lower resolution.

Scans should be scanned at 150DPI. Acceptable file types include .jpg, .jpeg, and .pdf.

Compressing a File

Compression means saving your document in a smaller file size. This not only allows the file to take up less space on your hard drive but also means it can be uploaded or e-mailed much faster. However, not all file types are easily compressed. Most computer operating systems include an option to compress a file. This option is often found under “File” or “Save,” or appears when you right-click on a file name in a navigation screen. Look on the “Help” tool in your computer operating system for more information on what is available to you.

There is also third-party compression software available, both at no cost and for purchase. Please remember that at this time, the Department of State cannot accept files that have been “zipped.”

Image Quality

After you scan a document, make sure that all the information is easily seen and read, and no parts of the document are cut off or cannot be seen. Please also ensure that the document is correctly oriented so it can be read across the screen without the need to rotate the document. Most scanning programs offer a preview function so you can make sure the document is readable. If you cannot read the scanned document, re-scan it at a higher resolution. Keep in mind this means the saved file will be larger and you may need to compress the file before you upload it.

Use a pen to complete and sign forms that will be scanned to ensure the writing can be seen on your scan.

General Requirements

If any document is in color, please scan it in color rather than black and white.

Please scan both the front and back sides of any document that has stamps, seals, or writing on the back. (If the back of the document is blank, do not scan it.)

If you have a certified translation of your document, include a scan of the translation with the original (i.e. foreign language) document in a single file.

TSA at Norfolk Airport gets new credential authentication technology to improve checkpoint screening capabilities

us travel docs passport status origination scan

NORFOLK, Va. —  New technology that confirms the validity of a traveler’s identification (ID) and confirms their flight information in real time is now in use at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints at Norfolk International Airport.

This deployment is the latest generation of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) to verify the identity of travelers. First generation CAT units are designed to scan a traveler’s photo identification, confirm the traveler’s identity as well as their flight details. The new CAT units, referred to as CAT-2, have the same capabilities, but are also equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler.

CAT-2 compares the traveler’s photo on the ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the CAT-2 confirms the match, a TSA officer verifies and the traveler can proceed through the checkpoint, without ever exchanging a boarding pass.

The CAT-2 units are equipped with cameras on tablets and are used to match the face of the person standing at the checkpoint with the face that appears on the traveler’s ID such as the person’s driver’s license or passport. The technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent documents at the security checkpoint. The photos are not saved and are only used to match the person standing at the travel document checking podium with the photo on the ID that is being presented.

This screen indicates that this individual’s driver’s license is not valid. (TSA photo)

“Identity verification of every traveler prior to flying is a key step in the security screening process,” said Robin “Chuck” Burke, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “This technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent IDs such as driver’s licenses and passports at a checkpoint and it increases efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identification. We just want to ensure that you are who you say you are.”

As an additional feature, the unit is touchless meaning that the passengers insert their ID and do not have to hand it to a TSA officer. Thus the units reduce touchpoints and speed the process. Travelers insert their ID, look at the camera and if the ID is validated, the traveler then proceeds into the checkpoint. Even with TSA’s use of these units, travelers still need to check-in with their airline in advance and bring their boarding pass to their gate to show the airline representative before boarding their flight.

“This latest technology helps ensure that we know who is boarding flights,” explained Jeffrey Horowitz, TSA’s Assistant Federal Security Director at the airport. “Credential authentication plays an important role in passenger identity verification. It improves a TSA officer’s ability to validate a traveler’s photo identification while also identifying any inconsistencies associated with fraudulent travel documents.”

The system also confirms the passenger’s flight status by verifying that the individual is ticketed to fly out of an airport on that same day.

CAT-2 units have what is referred to as a “library” of IDs programed into them that allow the technology to authenticate more than 2,500 different types of IDs including passports, military common access cards, Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler ID cards, uniformed services ID cards, permanent resident cards, U.S. visas and driver’s licenses and photo IDs issued by state motor vehicle departments.

Photos captured by CAT-2 units are never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification. Travelers who do not wish to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process.
