What our customers are saying...

"We took part in the Cape Reigna and 90-Mile Beach Day Tour from Paihia. It was one of our favourite things we did in New Zealand! Do not be put off by the long bus journeys, as they are worth every minute. Our tour guide was fantastic, and made us feel very welcome through his singing of traditional Maori songs. Highlights of the day include the fantastic sand boarding, driving on the beach, and seeing the famous cape lighthouse. We also made an early coffee stop in Doutbful Bay, a lovely surprise and something we wouldn't have known to do otherwise. If you have the time, would thoroughly recommend."

tours to cape reinga

"This is an activity one can appreciate in any kind of weather. Except for skimming down sand dunes (some did in the wet sand), our driver made the day a very special experience. His friendly nature and knowledge about the area, culture and history helped us feel connected and engaged in the experience. It is a long day so not an easy task with this amount of people! We thoroughly enjoyed the stops, especially the Cape where were lucky enough for the mist and rain to clear. Also the drive onto 90 Mile Beach in a bus was epic! Highly recommend taking this Northern New Zealand adventure."

A visit to New Zealand is not complete without a journey to the very top of the North Island – Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua). Ninety Mile Beach is another highlight of the tour – you’ll drive along the sand as waves crash beside the custom-built coach. Bay of Islands 3 Day Tour - Day 1

Heading north to the Bay of Islands takes you along the coast road past the seaside villages of Orewa and Waiwera. Then its on to the township of Puhoi, New Zealand's only Bohemian settlement, then Warkworth and the harbour side city of Whangarei and the unique township of Kawakawa. Arriving into the sub tropical Bay of Islands you are greeted with bush clad hillsides dropping to golden sand beaches. Paihia is the main tourist centre in the bay and has a great beach side atmosphere.

Board your cruise and take in the stunning views as you glide out through the islands and along the Rakaumangamanga Peninsula to Cape Brett, where a historic lighthouse keeps watch over and Piercy Island/Motukōkako, or as it is popularly known as the Hole in the Rock. According to Māori legend, local warriors used to paddle through the Hole in the Rock in their canoes before departing for battle. Drops of water from the cave roof above were a good omen. If conditions permit, your skipper will expertly guide the ship through the narrow space. Keep an eye out for common and bottlenose dolphins, whales, and other marine life during your cruise, and have your camera ready as you get up close to the action. Stop off at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island where you have time to relax, take a walk, have a swim, or enjoy a bite to eat and drink from the on-site fully licensed café. The purpose-built catamaran is licensed by DOC (the Department of Conservation) for dolphin viewing and the crew has years of experience locating dolphins in these waters.

You will be transferred from Paihia Central to your accommodation.

Your accommodation: Admirals View Lodge & Motel

Journey to the very tip of the North Island and uncover a region of rich Māori tradition along the way on an unforgettable full-day tour. Travel along the sand-swept shore of Ninety Mile Beach in our purpose-built coach and experience sandboarding (weather permitting). In Māori tradition, Cape Reinga or Te Rerenga Wairua is the place where spirits depart on their long journey back to the homeland. Stand at the northernmost point of New Zealand and drink in the panoramic views. As you stand beneath the iconic lighthouse, and watch the Tasman Sea and the mighty Pacific Ocean collide far below, you'll feel the power of this special place. Throughout the day your local driver guide will provide an entertaining and thought-provoking insight into the culture, history and natural wonders of the Far North. Your tour also includes a locally prepared lunch to keep you fuelled throughout the day.

Bay of Islands 3 Day Tour - Day 3

You will be transferred from your accommodation in Paihia to Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Waitangi is one of New Zealand's most historic sites where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between the local Maori and the British Government. This two day pass allows you access to the Treaty of Waitangi Grounds and includes admission to the Te Kōngahu Museum and Te Rau Aroha Museum and a Maori Cultural performance. During your guided tour, you'll learn about the history of the treaty and discover the stories and events that shaped New Zealand. The cultural performance inside the carved meeting house includes waiata (singing), poi, a display of Maori weaponry and the haka - a war dance New Zealand is well known for.

You will be transferred from Waitangi Treaty Grounds to Paihia Central via your accommodation.

Leaving the magical Bay of Islands behind you head south on State Highway 1 back towards Auckland, the city of sails, the route takes you through Kawakawa, affectionately known as 'train town'. The farming regions of Wellsford and Warkworth accompany you the rest of the journey before passing through the suburbs of the North Shore and crossing the harbour bridge and into the heart of Auckland City.

The best way to see Cape Reinga, a New Zealand must-do!

Cape Reinga Half Day Tour by aeroplane

“ Amazing experience – highly recommended! “ Julie, Auckland NZ – DEC 2020

Cape Reinga Half Day Tour – NZ$480* Per Person

The initial stage of the tour consists of a 45 minute flight up to Cape Reinga via Northlands’ spectacular harbours, such as the Whangaroa Harbour and the Rangaunu Harbour. We also pass across some beautiful beaches such as Coopers Beach, Doubtless Bay and of course the famous Ninety Mile Beach. From Ninety Mile Beach we then fly inland where we land at our airfield, which is only 20km from the Cape Reinga lighthouse.

Once on the ground a comfortable air-conditioned mini-bus will meet the aircraft. It will take you on a 2½ vehicle hour tour around the top of New Zealand.

Vehicle Tour Includes:

  • The Cape Reinga Lighthouse where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean
  • A short drive to Tapotupotu Bay where we enjoy a light morning tea with refreshments. There is time for a stroll on the beach
  • Then we move across to the Te Paki quicksand stream with its giant sand dunes

The return 1 hour flight to the Bay of Islands includes some of the most spectacular coastal scenery Northland has to offer. You will fly over the Parengarenga Harbour and Great Exhibition Bay, which are only visible by air or by sea. This area is very remote and without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand with it’s pure white silica sand and crystal clear water. The flight also passes across the Houhora Harbour, the Cavalli islands, Kauri Cliff’s golf course and the spectacular Bay of Islands.

A trip to New Zealand would be incomplete without a trip to the very top of the North Island, Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua). Discover the untamed grandeur of this vast and pristine country steeped in Maori culture and history. Enjoy a sample of New Zealand’s varied and stunning terrain as you drive north: the rolling hills of Northland’s rural countryside, breath-taking coastline vistas, and native woodland.

As the waves break besides the custom-built coach, drive down the sand on Ninety Mile Beach. Feel the sand under your toes as you assist your driving guide in his search for shellfish (conditions permitting). Your off-road adventure continues along Te Paki Stream, pausing at the vast sand dunes to enjoy the thrills and spills of sand-boarding. Clambering up and surfing down the dunes (if you dare!) will certainly get your pulse rate up.

As you approach Cape Reinga, listen to the stories about this historic spot, where ghosts, according to Maori belief, embark on their voyage home to Hawaiki. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, see the renowned lighthouse, and witness the spot where the Tasman Sea and the vast Pacific Ocean collide.

During your trip, you will also have a  a freshly prepared pre-selected café lunch at Hohoura  please specify at the time of purchase.

Your return journey will be as delightful, as your tour guide’s mix of local expertise, broad historical knowledge, and excellent sense of humour creates an amazing adventure.
