Love Sewing

Makeup Bag Sewing Patterns

You can never have too many makeup bags and as a sewing project, they are some of the easiest to make. Most of the options in the store are similar, to say the least, which is why so many people make their own. This is why we have created a list of the best makeup bag sewing patterns. Each one is free, simple, and will work to keep all the small essentials safe.

This would make a lovely gift on Mother’s day, what mum does not love a homemade gift? Most people have fabric scraps and cuts kept for a project such as this.

It doesn’t require a lot of material or time but there are nice touches that make it unique. The top zipper keeps all items safe and is easy to sew. Then, there are the pleats added to both sides.

There is also a lining so expect this to last a long time.

This vintage-style toiletry bag makes us want to take a trip but wherever it is used, it is a rewarding project, and the pattern is free.

We love the combination of colors from the piping to the metal dots on the top. The laminate material makes it easy to wipe down as stopping smudges and spills completely is near impossible.

Because of the material you are working with, a reliable sewing machine is a must, as are a standard presser foot, and zipper foot.

The roll-up design of this makeup bag sewing pattern is so convenient as it is small when rolled up, but when stretched out, provides easy access to those brushes.

The tie closure makes it a little prettier and it looks a little bit like a purse and even fits into a bag nicely.

It includes a template for getting the spacing right for the zippered pocket.

The side loop handle makes this makeup bag easy to carry and it has a large capacity to make it perfect for storing toiletries.

The zipper provides easy top access and the exterior is made from ripstop nylon that is wipe-clean.

One of the best things about this project is that it can be made from scraps and there are lots of large images to take away a lot of the guesswork.

The wired inner ensures this makeup bag keeps its shape better than most. There are plenty of opportunities to personalize this project, from the zipper detail that is heart-shaped in the example.

It features a lining to keep it more secure. When fully opened it has a wide capacity making it easy to access.

Although there aren’t extensive instructions it is not a difficult project to master for an intermediate sewer and above.

A felt travel bag always has a nice texture and is relatively easy to work with. Because it isn’t the widest, it is easy to slip into a bag and is deep enough to hold plenty of makeup essentials.

It measures 18 cm x 18 cm x 7 cm so there is still a decent capacity and both a machine and hand sewing are used here.

The zipper is sewn by hand so this shouldn’t be an intimidating project for a beginner. The instructions are easy to follow and the felt is flexible enough for it to be filled up to max capacity.

Although this project is labeled as easy, there are plenty of impressive features. To start, there is a mirror and small LED lights so this is about as glam as you could hope for.

Use a fabric that is lightweight enough for the lights to have a chance to shine and make this bag look as impressive as it should.

It measures approximately 14 x 17 cm. This is a makeup bag sewing pattern with a difference.

This pleasant pouch-style makeup bag can be easy to transport due to its convenient size, and even when at max capacity, it is still easy to fit into a suitcase.

The vinyl lining makes it easy to clean but also prevents it from spilling out and staining garments and anything else it is near.

The clipped handle makes it easy to carry and the 9-inch zipper gives plenty of room to rummage. The tutorial itself is easy to follow and means it shouldn’t take long to complete.

This cute and colorful makeup bag can be made in double-quick time with the help of a reliable sewing machine.

You will need a zig-zag presser foot to attach the zipper and this makes it a good project for a beginner looking to learn new sewing skills.

It is another project that would be good for making use of those scraps you have kept for smaller projects and it all centers around 12 x 1.5-inch strips of fabric as well as a base fabric.

The clear vinyl of this makeup bag sewing pattern is great because it makes it easy to find something fast without having to rummage.

It all starts with 2 fabric rectangles and a vinyl rectangle and the instructions are as simple as anyone would hope. Because they are so easy to make, it is a good project for organizing the bathroom cupboard.

Why not keep makeup in one, cotton buds in another, then mini toiletries for guests in a third.

The texture of this quilted version is so nice that it is hard to put it down once it is finished. The quilting pattern takes a little skill but this is an excellent project for trying something new or practicing those quilting skills.

The floral pattern in the example shows what is possible but not everyone is an expert in free motion quilting, a straight stitch and a walking foot will more than suffice.

There are plenty of images to walk the user through each step so this should be a rewarding makeup bag that most people will find easy enough.

This is another roll-up cosmetics case and one that has a vinyl lining inside to make it easy to see what you are looking for.

The best part is that there are three zipper pockets, making it easy to compartmentalize different types of makeup.

The snap press is optional but definitely adds a nice secure touch to what is a simple design o the outside, but full of surprises when rolled out.

This cute makeup bag sewing pattern is a good project for a beginner yet still offers a chance to get creative.

The zip pull is one such feature as you can add beads or something small to give it a little personalization. It makes good use of different materials with jean being a staple here.

This is great as it is durable, has a little room for stretch, and is easy enough to work with when using a decent sewing machine.

There’s something about this option that is just a little more fashionable than some of the others.

From the thin lines that cross to the little label that makes it look store-bought, it is not an ordinary cosmetic pouch bag.

Although the instructions are lacking, the images make it a simple project and there are plenty of them to take the user through each step. The reward is a bag with plenty of room and a secure lining.

With a typical makeup bag style, this boxy pouch packs down well for travel, but can also be stuffed full of your favorite makeup items and kept by the bathroom mirror at all times.

It is only small at 4.5 inches long and 3 inches high but this makes it perfect for storing a handful of essentials for a weekend away.

If you have a small amount of fabric leftover and want to put it to good use, you should look no further than this project.

More at: Three Bears

With fusible vinyl on the inside to make sure no spills leak, this is a decent-sized makeup bag and there is plenty to love.

From the polka dot design on the outside, to the contracts of the red zipper to the blue of the main fabric, it is a fully functional and pretty bag.

Measuring 8 inches long, and 5 wide and tall, there is no shortage of space for when you need to add new makeup.

More at: She Got The Notion

travel diy makeup bag

Finishing with an easy project is an ideal project for anyone who only has an hour to spare. In fact, it should take less – around 20 minutes for a lot of sewers.

As expected, the instructions make it seem basic, and there isn’t a lot of skill involved bar the zipper when it comes to attaching it.

We like the strips, the size, and the convenience of this option. A makeup bag for those who need to start with an easy project.

DIY: Travel Makeup or Toiletry Bag

travel diy makeup bag

Make your own DIY travel makeup/toiletry bag. Line it with a cute fabric. It even has a strap to make carrying it around easier. There’s nothing like a new project to spark creativity. Keep reading for the tutorial. Check out my other DIY projects here .

  • fabric – two 10.5 x 14.5″ (26.67 x 36.83 cm) rectangles for bag and lining
  • fabric – one 7.25 x 4.25″ (18.415 x 10.795 cm) rectangle for the strap
  • zipper- 10.5″ (26.67 cm) [I prefer the exposed metal ones, but any will do]
  • sewing machine
  • sewing pins
  • chalk or white marking pencil

Sewing Machine Used

Step 1: Make the Strap

The first step in making your DIY travel makeup bag is constructing the strap. Start with the 7.25 x 4.25″ (18.415 x 10.795 cm) rectangle. Fold down 1/2″ (1.27 cm) of the top and bottom (bottom, left image). Then fold both of those sides together (bottom, right image).

travel diy makeup bag

Now you want to stitch about 1/4″ (0.635 cm) on both the top and bottom (below). Set it aside.

travel diy makeup bag

Step 2: Attaching the zipper

Place the two larger rectangles together evenly. Face the dull sides together (This is the opposite of what we normally do.) Then line up the zipper with the fabric at the short end of the rectangle. The zipper should be facing upside down.

travel diy makeup bag

Sew the zipper onto the the short end of the fabric (below). It gets a little tricky with the zipper if you have a metal zipper like this. You may have to move the zipper around a little to keep it out the way.

travel diy makeup bag

Now it’s time to do it on the opposite side. Make sure the top side of the zipper faces the outside fabric of the bag. In this case it’s the grey side.

diy-travel-makeup-bag

When it’s done it should look like this (below).

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Open the zipper all the way up and add a top stitch over the fabric that is touching the zipper (below). It will add a nice professional touch to the finished bag.

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Step 3: Sew the Ends Together

The bag should be inside out at this point. Lay it flat. Use the ruler to make sure that each side of the zipper is even.

Then sew across where the closed end of the zipper is. Sew right behind the metal block at the end of the zipper. Otherwise you’ll have a big gap at the end of the zipper once the bag is finished.

travel diy makeup bag

I had to sew this one twice because I was going to have a gap (bottom, left image).

Leave the zipper open when you sew the other end. Or you’ll have a bag that is sewed and zippered shut. It will be funny, but not really funny.

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Step 4: Creating the Box Shape

Start where the bag has the closed end of the zipper. Make a triangle at each corner of the bag. It’s easier to see the actual triangle shape in the bottom middle and left images because the ruler is not in the way. Use chalk or a white pencil to mark about 1″ (2.54 cm) from that peak of the triangle. After that, go to where you marked and sew straight across from that point.

travel diy makeup bag

Do that to the the other side. Remember to only do the two corners near the closed end of the zipper.

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Step 5: Attaching the Strap

Now you’ll work on the end that has the open zipper. Poke out the corner with your finger (bottom, left image). You’re not going to make a little triangle just yet. Take the fabric that you sewed in the very beginning for the strap.

Place that about 1″ (2.54 cm) down from the triangle peak. Once you position it correctly, slide it so that the seam is directly in the middle of that strip (bottom, right image).

travel diy makeup bag

Use your thumb to keep the strip in that position as you fold the bag inside out to form the triangle (bottom left and middle images). Again, measure 1″ (2.54 cm) down from the triangle. This time use a pin to position the strap in place (bottom, right image).

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Do the same thing with the other side, making sure that the strap is not twisted. Also make sure it’s facing the way you want it. Make the triangle again and add your pin (bottom, right image).

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Don’t head right back to the sewing machine just yet. While everything is pinned turn your bag the right side out. Are the straps even? Do you like the way they look? Is one strap a lot higher than the other one? Keep readjusting it. This may be the hardest part in making the whole bag. But you’re almost finished!

travel diy makeup bag

Once you are happy with the strap, sew across just like you did for the other end. You may still have to rip out the stitches and do the strap over. But that’s fine.

diy-travel-makeup-bag

Once you are completely satisfied, cut the corners off of each triangle so that the bag is not bulky inside.

travel diy makeup bag

And now you are done with your diy travel makeup bag!

15 Cute DIY Makeup Bags

Updated on October 26, 2017

Faux leather makeup bag with studs

If there’s one thing we love almost as much as our makeup itself, it’s a good makeup bag. Sure, there are plenty of makeup bags that we could buy in the store, but there’s just something more satisfying about making things ourselves. Besides, the store doesn’t always have the size we need or the colour and pattern we want! That’s why we decided to track down some tutorials and learn how to make cute travel sized makeup bags ourselves.

Matching makeup bag set with contrasting zippers

Just in case you’d like to make your own makeup bags as well but you’re in need of a little guidance, just like we were, here are 15 of the best DIY makeup bag tutorials we’ve found so far!

1. Matching makeup bag set with contrasting zippers

Matching makeup bag set with contrasting zippers

Did you first start researching makeup bag tutorials because you wanted a single bag, but the more you looked, the more you realized that you’d actually benefit from more? Then we’d suggest making yourself an adorably custom matching set! We love this design from Tabitha Sewer because making two different bags in two different shapes lets us store all of our differently sized cosmetics nicely when we travel!

2. Cute origami bag

Cute origami bag

Did you love the shape and fit of the square bag option we showed you in the tutorial above but you’re just not quite sure you’re ready to tackle sewing that shape, especially with stiff interfacing involved? In that case, we have a feeling you’ll prefer this tutorial from  Anne or Shine ! While they  do show you how they sewed the bag shape you’re looking for, they also break down the steps for making a no-sew version.

3. Simple zipper top bags

Simple zipper top bags

Are you looking for a bag that’s actually so simple to sew that you could make many of them all at once? We loved the idea of making more than one because we thought cute little makeover kits would make great party favours at our next Ladies Night, and what’s better than giving your friends things that you actually made them yourself? Check out this great, simple cosmetic bag tutorial from Amusing MJ that shows you how to put a zipper right in at the top in just a few surprisingly easy steps.

4. Kitty cat cosmetic bag

Kitty cat cosmetic bag

Perhaps your personal style is a little bit more silly and novelty than a regular patterned cosmetic bag really accounts for? Don’t get us wrong, we think the bags we’ve shown you so far are totally cute, but there’s another style of makeup bag that really takes the take when it comes to making something adorable… because it’s shaped like a kitty cat! Check out how The Makeup Dummy made this simple DIY pouch that zips all the way along the bottom and is the perfect size for holding a few compacts.

5. Kiss shaped makeup bag

Kiss shaped makeup bag

If you’re going to make yourself a makeup bag of your very own doing, why not run with the theme you’ve already got at hand- makeup itself? We  adore this surprisingly simple DIY kiss shaped makeup bag. We actually made one for ourselves a few weeks ago and now we feel a secret sense of accomplishment every time we take a lipstick out of it and paint our own pout to match the bag! Find out how it’s done on DIY Crafts TV.

6. Crescent shaped cosmetics bag

Crescent shaped cosmetics bag

For a very long time, the only shape of makeup bag we would buy ourselves is the kind that widens near the top to form a sort of crescent shape. Besides fitting the makeup better inside, something about those bags also just makes them fit better in a suitcase, which is great since we’ve got a crazy case of Wanderlust! As usual, however, We like making our own things better because then we get hours of DIY fun out of it too. Check out how Style Novice made this hilarious little makeup bag covered in curly mustaches!

7. Duct tape cosmetic bag

Duct tape cosmetic bag

Have you always been a pretty big fan of crafting with unconventional tools and materials and you take the opportunity to make things out of stuff they’re not usually made from at every turn? Then something tells us you’re going to absolutely  love this awesome rectangular makeup bag created from patterned duct tape! Susie even shows you how to sew in a zipper (which we didn’t even know you could do with duct tape).

8. Kawaii candy makeup bag

Kawaii candy makeup bag

Have you always liked the oblong shaped makeup bags best because you like that all of your brushes and eyeliner pencils will fit inside, no matter how short or long they are? Well, here’s one that’s in the shape you’re looking for, but the  real reason we really like this design is because it’s so incredibly adorable! 2 Cats & 1 Doll guides you through the process of making a zippered bag with tapered and twisted ends that look like the way an old candy wrapper closes. We love that they added a cute applique face as well, to really drive the Kawaii style home!

9. Translucent polka dotted makeup bag

Pretty zipper bag for your beauty items

Have you been scrolling through these adorable bags and liking what you see, but also wishing you could find a tutorial that will teach you to make a see-through bag just like the ones you see in the store, since that’s what’s trending right now? You might be familiar with the basic sewing requirements to get the shape you want, but sometimes it helps to have some guidance when you’re trying those techniques out with a new material! That’s why we loved this simple translucent bag tutorial from Lia Griffith .

10. Wide bottom makeup bag

Wide bottom makeup bag

Did you like the rounded top you saw on the crescent shaped bag we showed you earlier, but you’re actually  not a big fan of the way the bag tapers at the bottom because you like to bring quite a bit of makeup with you when you travel? Then try this design that’s more of a compromise between what you like and what you need! Alma Lopez shows you the necessary steps for making a cosmetic bag that’s rounded at the mouth where the zipper sits but is still just as wide at the bottom as its widest point anywhere else. It will absolutely hold more things for those trips where you  need a range of lip colour choices!

11. Sparkly makeup bag from a pencil case

Sparkly makeup bag from a pencil case

Are you  just inexperienced at sewing enough that you’re not quite comfortable with the idea of sewing your own fabric bag just yet, but you still want a closing makeup bag that’s your own creation? Then try altering a simple plastic sleeve pencil case to make it look a lot more fun and ready to hold your cosmetics! We love the way A Magical Mess used sparkly paper and ribbons to put a fun rainbow spin on their bag in a simple but effective way. This bag will stop cosmetics from leaking in your suitcase even better than a fabric one would!

12. Vintage inspired cylinder makeup bag

Vintage inspired cylinder makeup bag

Are you quite experienced at sewing and ready to tackle things like rounded shapes and filled layers? In that case, we have a feeling this beautifully vintage looking cylindrically shaped cosmetics bag is the perfect project for you! Handmadiya guides you through the process of cutting the right shapes, sewing the layers together, and affixing the zipper. We love the way that the embroidered fabric they chose makes the whole thing look old fashioned. Your taller cosmetics, like foundations and primers, will fit right in without having to lay sideways!

13. A simple bag made two ways

A simple bag made two ways

Do you have a feeling that you’re  almost prepared to make your own cosmetic bag right now, but you could still use a little more information and direction when it comes to actually choosing the techniques you’ll use? In that case, here’s an easy tutorial that’s 2-for-1! Bobeentina gives you a great tutorial that shows you how to make your bag with a simple seam  or with an inner lining that hides the seam edges, in case you’re more advanced.

14. Patched makeup bag from old jeans

Whenever you do a DIY project that’s completely from scratch, do you try to also make it an upcycling venture whenever you can? Well, we often do the same thing, so we can’t say we blame you! That’s why we loved this adorable patched denim bag tutorial from MsJennyBee18 so much; they show you how to make the bag using cut sections of old jeans that you don’t wear anymore! Once you’re done the basic bag construction itself, they also show you how to apply some cute floral appliques for a little extra style.

15. Leather makeup bag with studs

Faux leather makeup bag with studs

Is your personal style a little more edgy than a lot of the cutesy designs we’ve shown you on our list so far? Then here’s the tutorial you’ve been waiting for all along! AK Workshop shows you how to make a longer cosmetic bag with rounded corners, but their steps are specifically for working with faux leather, which is great because that can be a much different sewing experience than most fabrics. Perhaps the best part, however, is that once you’ve finished making the bag itself, they also who you how to stud the sides to give it some extra style.

Do you know a makeup lover who’s also a DIY enthusiast with some sewing skills under their belt? Share this post with them to help them get crafty  and keep their cosmetics safe and organized!

DIY Drawstring Cosmetic Bag INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut the fabrics:.

for the bag:

  • 16″ (40cm) circle out of main fabric
  • 16″ (40cm)  circle out of lining

for the tab:

3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (9 x 16.5cm) – cut 2 pieces out of main fabric

You’ll also need

  • 60″ (152.5 cm) single fold bias tape
  • 80″ (200cm) silk drawstring
  • 1.5″ long, 1/2″ wide velcro piece (3.5cm long x 1.5 cm wide)

for the optional handle: 3 by 7 inches (7.5 x 17.5cm) out of main fabric

For those who asked for a downloadable makeup bag pattern: you don’t really need a PDF drawstring makeup bag pattern, because it’s basically 2 circles of fabric, and all you need is the cut list above. I’m a strong believer in sustainability and I try to reduce paper waste as much as possible.

STEP 1: Make the tab

tab of the cosmetic bag

Create the tab to fasten the drawstring makeup bag first. Cut out the shape from the fabric rectangles by just rounding the top corners.

Place the two pieces right side to right side and stitch right round, leaving a gap of two inches on one of the long sides. Make tiny V cuts into the fabric on the curve so it will lie flat when turned, making sure not to cut too close to the stitch line.

(optional) If you want the tab to be more sturdy, add fusible interfacing before rounding the corners. Iron on the fusible interlining to the wrong side of one of the pieces.

STEP 2: Topstitch the tab

making the tab of the fabric makeup bag

Turn the tab the right way out, poking out the corners and press flat, turning in the raw edges at the opening by ¼ inch and pressing flat. Top stitch all around the edges.

STEP 3: Stitch tab to the outer layer

sew the tab to the outer layer of the diy makeup bag

Take the circular piece of outer fabric of the make-up bag and measure 3 inches from the edge, ensuring the edge of the tab is placed straight on the fabric. The curved bit will be projecting beyond the edge of the fabric. Sew the tab in place on the short straight side, back tacking at the start and finish.

STEP 4: Add the bias tape

sew around the makeup bag

Take the bias binding and open it out at the ends, pressing a ½ inch (12mm) fold over on both ends of the tape and stitch ¼ inch (6mm) from the edge so as the drawstring moves it doesn’t pull out a frayed edge. Open the tape so the two raw edges are placed facing the raw edge of the lining circle, with the fold facing the inner part of the circular fabric. Pin the one end in place, pin all around the bag and at the end , pin the other end of the bias tape ½ inch (12mm) away from the other end.

STEP 5: Sew

Stitch the bias tape to the lining right around the edge.

STEP 6: Assemble

assembling the drawstring makeup bag

Place the outer piece of the makeup bag fabric with the right side facing the right side of the lining. Make sure the tab you stitched on the outer piece is folded into the center of the fabric so it does not get caught up when sewing the edge, and line up the section where the tab is with the ½ inch (12mm) gap left in the bias binding. Now pin right round, leaving a 2 to 3-inch (5-7cm) gap anywhere on the circle, except where the gap is in the bias binding – you want to sew that section closed.

STEP 7: Topstitch around the round makeup bag

topstitch around the makeup bag

Stitch right around the edge so the inner and outer are stitched together and the bias binding is inside the circle. When you are done turn the right way out, poking out the circle so it all lies flat and the drawstring casing formed by the bias binding is outside.

STEP 8: Insert the cord through the channel

round cosmetic bag - insert the cord

Thread the drawstring through the casing and finish with a bead or a knot so the drawstring does not pull back into the casing.

STEP 9: Sew on the velcro pieces

sew around the velcro piece of the homemade makeup bag

Pull up the drawstring, flap over the tab and see where you should place the Velcro to secure the tab, using an erasable pen make a mark on the inner side of the tab, and a corresponding one on the bag, spread out the drawstring and stitch the matching bits of Velcro neatly to the tab and the bag, so the flap stays closed.

If you don’t need a handle, your bag is not complete. If you want to add a handle, proceed with the next, final step.

STEP 10: (OPTIONAL) Add a handle

If you want to attach an optional handle this can be done. Simply cut a piece of fabric 3 by 7 inches (7.5 x 17.5cm), fold in half, right side to right side along the longer side, and sew closed leaving an opening of 1 ½ inches (3cm) on the open long side. Trim excess fabric by cutting across the corners.

Turn out through the opening and poke out the corners so it lies flat then press, tucking under the raw edges of the opening and top stitch all the way around 1/8 inch(3mm) from the edge.

Loosen the drawstring of the bag and place the handle on either side of the tab where it is stitched to the makeup bag. Measure carefully so the ends of the handle are in line with the stitch line of the tab and on either side of it. Mark a one-inch square on either side of the tab. Place one end of the handle over it and stitching through both the outer and the lining, attach by sewing right around the edge of the one-inch square and make a stitched X through the middle so it won’t come loose. Repeat with the other side of the handle.

pull the drawstring to cinch up the diy makeup bag

That’s it – your drawstring makeup bag is ready! Load it up with make up, pull up the drawstring, place it in your handbag and you are ready to go!

DIY Makeup Bag FAQs:

Q: Can I use a PVC for the lining of the bag?

A: This is not advisable as you will see the seams from the inside, and it will make the bag too stiff. Rather use a dark fabric that will not show up marks should any make-up spill on it, and wash regularly.

Q: Can I make the bag with a double drawstring?

A: Yes, you can by cutting the bias binding into half – so you have two equal lengths. Open out, fold over and secure both ends of the two halves. Fold the lining circle in half and mark on either side of the circle and attach bias binding as you did for the single drawstring, except this time you will be leaving ½ inch open at the marks you have placed ( ¼ inch on either side of the mark. Thread a drawstring through the top half of the binding and another through the bottom half. Simply draw up both ends on one side and secure with a bead or knot, then repeat on the other side.

how to sew a round makeup bag

The circular drawstring makeup bag is so much more convenient to use as you can lay everything out in one spot, apply make-up, and simply draw up the string and stash, instead of poking around in the dark recesses of zippered make up bags. It’s also super easy to wash and dry, so you always have a clean round makeup bag. They make great gifts too – especially if you add in a couple of make-up items. To get more exciting sewing ideas directly in your in-box just hit the subscribe button below.

Hi Zuzanna, it’s my bad! I’ve been meaning to make a pattern, but decided against it. All you need are two 16 inch circles of fabrics (one main, one lining) and two rectangles 3.5 x 6.5″ each for the tab. Then you just round off the edges of the small fabric pieces. That’s it

Thank-you, so much, Helen! Wishing you a lovely day with the perfect mix of sunshine and cooling breeze. ZL

Thank you very much for your participation and linking your blog posts to SeniorSalon

It’s my pleasure, Esme. Thank you so much for commenting

Hi Ruby, thank you for the encouraging message. I’ve been super busy with my blog lately and some big renovations at home, which meant very limited screen time for other fun activities. I’m glad you are inspired by my recipes.

Such incredible advice from so many awesome sources! I love it!

Aren’t these makeup bags the best! I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Corey!

Thank you so much for this pattern. I have not yet seen one of these types of bags with a handle! Too cute

Thank you for your compliments! A handle is really convenient on this bag. I hope you’ll love all the projects that you will try.

Made the bag according to the instructions. I am perplexed, however, as the drawstrings don’t close the hole in the bag so stuff can still fall out. What did I do wrong?

I’m not sure you did anything wrong. There is still a small hole on top by design, so you can push the loose end of the drawstring inside. This also keeps the stuff from falling.

Thanks, Helen, for this tutorial. This came over a few weeks ago and I saved it to make later. It’s going under my needle today for a granddaughter for Christmas. I’d better get to it!

That’s so great to hear, Susanne! It sounds like you have a new favorite! I hope your granddaughter loved it

Hi Helen, I am loving this bag, finding it difficult to cut a proper circle, any ideas I may use? Thanks.

Yeah, you can use this method – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aohr0LfmRHY&list=PLnYujzwy9m3wyuViclcfgwK_ec0KGZYXZ&index=76

Hello, thanks for this great tutorial and idea, my only question is what is the size of the circle, 16 in. diameter (from one side to the other)? Love the idea of stuffing the cord inside and having a flap to keep everything in. Saludos, L.

Fab project! I have one of these (not handmade) and it holds so much makeup! I love your design. 🙂 #MMBC.

Easy Travel Makeup Bag Sewing Tutorial

Made at Home

This easy travel makeup bag is so cute, you’ll want to make one for everyone you know! I love the monster print fabric I used for the outside of the bag. And of course, this bag can be used as a pencil case or coin purse, as well. Happy crafting!

Tools and materials:

  • Outer fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Interfacing fabric
  • 9-inch zipper
  • Pins or clips
  • Fabric chalk or pen
  • Sewing machine

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Cut the fabric

Cut fabric and interfacing

I cut one piece of outer fabric, one piece of lining fabric, and one piece of interfacing, each of which was 23 centimeters (9 inches) long, and 33 centimeters (13 inches) wide.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Cut two small rectangles

I also cut two small pieces from the same fabric I used for the lining, each one 6 centimeters (2.5 inches) long and 8 centimeters (3 inches) wide.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Iron the interfacing onto the fabric

Iron the interfacing onto the outer fabric

I laid the interfacing fabric on the wrong side of the outer fabric piece and ironed it on.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Make a travel makeup bag

Layer the zipper between the fabric pieces

Next, I turned my outer fabric so the right side was facing me, and laid the zipper along one edge, right side facing the fabric. On top of that, I layered the lining fabric.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Clip or pin the edge

Then I clipped everything in place.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Sew down the zipper

Sew the zipper into the fabric

To sew the zipper into the fabric, I opened the zipper partway and sewed along the outer edge of the fabric until the point where the zipper was still closed. Then, I closed the zipper back up and continued sewing along the edge of the fabric until the end.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Pin the outer fabric to the zipper

Pin the fabric to the second side of the zipper

Next, I flipped the lining fabric behind the outer fabric, so the zipper was exposed. I opened the zipper partially, then folded the outer fabric upwards and pinned it to the farther, unsewn edge of the zipper.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Flip it over

Then I flipped the whole thing over, so the lining fabric was facing me.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Pin the lining to the zipper

I folded the lining fabric up, and pinned it to the unsewn edge of the zipper, as well.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Sew a travel makeup bag

Sew it in place

Once again, I sewed along the edge until I reached the point where the zipper was closed. Then I zipped the zipper up all the way and continued to sew till the end.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Travel makeup bag tutorial

Arrange the fabric

Once the zipper was sewn in place, I rearranged the fabric pieces so the outer fabric was on the outside and the lining was on the inside, instead of being folded side-by-side.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Flip the lining to the outside

Then I flipped it so the lining was on the outside and the outer fabric was on the inside.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Snip the corners

Snip the corners

I cut a very small piece off the corners of the outer fabric.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Small travel makeup bag

Put the zipper in the middle and pin

Next, I folded the fabric so the zipper ran down the middle, instead of along one edge, and pinned all the layers of fabric together on either side.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Fold the edges inward

Fold the small fabric pieces

Next, I moved on to the small pieces of fabric I had cut. I folded the shorter edges of each rectangle inwards about 1 centimeter (half an inch) and ironed it flat.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Fold in half

Then I folded it down the middle, so the ironed edges were opposite the fold, and pressed it flat.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Sew both long edges

Step: Sew down the edges

I sewed along both long edges of the rectangle.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Insert tabs

Fold the tabs and insert them between the outer fabric

I folded the tabs so the raw edges met, and then placed the folded tab beneath the zipper, between the two layers of outer fabric, so the folded edge was on the inside, and all the raw edges were aligned. I pinned both tabs in place and sewed them down.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Basic travel makeup bag

Mark and pin the corners

In each of the four corners of the bag, I marked a 7.5 centimeter (3 inches) line and pinned the edges down.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, How to sew a travel makeup bag

Sew down the corners

Then I sewed along the line I had just drawn across each corner. Once I had finished sewing, I cut a very small piece off each corner.

easy travel makeup bag sewing tutorial, Cute travel makeup bag

Turn it right side out

Then all I had to do was flip the bag right side out, and it was complete!

This bag is ridiculously adorable. I love it so much! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and I’d love to see how your makeup bag projects turn out.

The Best Way To Pack Makeup And Keep Your Toiletry Bag Mess-Free

E ven if you're the type of traveler who packs your bag hours (minutes!) before you depart on a trip, spending some extra time organizing your makeup and cosmetics is essential, particularly if you're flying to your destination.

Strict regulations limit the quantity and size of liquids you can carry onboard an aircraft in most countries around the world. If you're careful with your packing, you can avoid having to throw away expensive products before you can pass through security -- or facing the risk of missing your flight. If you plan on checking a bag , you'll have more flexibility on what products you can pack. However, you'll still run the risk of messy spills as the plane's pressurization changes during take-off and landing.

Whether you like to travel with the bare necessities or you're a fashionista who enjoys creating elaborate looks on your vacations, a well-packed makeup bag will keep your travels stress-free and mess-free.

Consider Your Mode Of Transportation

If you're going on a short trip (or prefer to travel light), you will likely pack all your essentials into one carry-on suitcase to avoid lugging around extra bags. Limiting yourself to a carry-on bag will require you to narrow your makeup collection to the everyday essentials. Before you even begin packing, pay attention to which cosmetic products you use daily -- the ones you can't live without.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) , travelers can bring one quart-sized bag full of toiletries in their carry-on baggage. Any cosmetics or personal care products that are liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, or pastes must be in 3.4 ounces or less containers and fit within the clear quart-sized bag. Liquid foundations, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and hairsprays are all examples of products that you'll need to ensure fit the 3.4 ounces or under requirements. Solid cosmetics like powder foundation or lipsticks won't be regulated. You can separate solids from liquids if your cosmetics and toiletries don't fit in the quart-sized bag.

If you're worried about space, consider swapping liquids for solid options. You can purchase solid toothpaste tablets that double as breath mints. You can also swap your hair care gels for solid shampoo and conditioner bars.

How To Pack A Makeup Bag If You're Checking Luggage

The limited space in a carry-on bag and the TSA requirements for liquids can make it challenging to pack your toiletry bag. There's no shame in being a maximalist, and travel is an ideal opportunity to express yourself and try out new and exciting makeup looks. Whether you're traveling for an extended period or excited to create many different makeup styles during your trip, chances are you'll need to check a bag.

The great news when it comes to checking a bag is that you'll have plenty of space and the flexibility to bring whatever you choose. The TSA has no liquid limitations regarding checked baggage, so you can pack as many full-size cosmetic and personal care products as you desire without stuffing them into a tiny bag (and potentially damaging your favorite products).

When packing your makeup bag in a checked suitcase, your primary concern should be pressurization. Ensure that liquids are stored in plastic or silicone bags to keep them from creating a mess if they explode. This sometimes happens due to the changes in pressurization in the airplane's cargo hold. For added safety, you can wrap your liquids in plastic wrap .

Find The Right Toiletry Bag Or Makeup Pouches And Stay Organized During Your Trip

Investing in a great travel makeup bag will help ensure that you can keep your products organized for the duration of your trip. Some excellent options are on the market, including large bags with multiple compartments. Some even come equipped with hangers and clear compartments to hang on the bathroom door when you arrive at your destination, allowing you to free up counter space.

Select different size pouches to keep your products organized within your toiletry bag. You can use plastic baggies, but if you travel often it might be worth investing in some small reusable bags or pouches of various sizes to help you organize products by size and type.

Divide your products up by type to help keep things organized. Consider separating your skincare, hairstyling products, and makeup into separate bags. Many travel toiletry bags have detachable clear plastic bags that are perfect for liquids, which might otherwise spill and cause a mess. Lump together solids like lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes in a separate bag or compartment. Finally, pack your brushes and makeup applicators.

Pack Multi-Purpose Makeup

When packing the perfect toiletry bag for your vacation, consider the products you use daily. In the days leading up to your trip, pay attention to the products you gravitate towards most that are the easiest to use.

If you wear makeup, consider packing items that can be used in multiple ways to create various looks without taking up a ton of space. Swap out heavy liquid foundations for a cream complexion stick that can be used as both foundation and concealer -- or grab a solid blush stick that can double as a buildable lip color.

Consider narrowing down your makeup to five essential products for an ideal minimalist beauty routine. You'll want to choose one product for your complexion, such as a tinted moisturizer or a cream foundation stick. Pair this with a tinted brow gel, a travel-sized mascara, a cream blush that you can wear as lipstick, and a neutral eyeshadow palette that can create multiple looks for both day and night.

Once you've packed the basics, you can add a few specialty items as space allows. Go ahead and throw in that luminous highlighter or the extra lipstick you love to fill the space you have in your makeup bag.

Purchase Travel Travel-Size Minis Of Your Favorite Products

It's worth investing in travel-sized minis of your favorite products. Many brands create sample or mini sizes of some of their top products. If you travel a lot , you can have your travel makeup kit pre-packed and ready each time you embark on a trip.

Beauty samples are the perfect sizes to take on trips, but make sure it's a product you'll actually use; otherwise, it will simply take up extra space. Mini-size products are perfect for those who don't want to sacrifice their beauty routine and will save a ton of space in your bag.

Another option is to invest in some refillable travel containers that you can fill up with the everyday products you use at home. If you're using refillable decanters, purchase a set of labels and handwrite (or type out a label for each product) so that you don't accidentally end up washing your hair with body lotion.

  • 10 Things That Delighted Us Last Week: From Dainty Coupes to Go-Bag Matches

travel diy makeup bag

We write about hundreds of products each week. Here, in our version of the Sunday circular, we’ve plucked some of our recent favorites: expert-recommended essentials, life-changing stuff you didn’t know you needed, newly launched gizmos, and very good deals we uncovered while trawling through the vast online-shopping universe — including Champagne coupes from the Ritz Bar in Paris, $9 C.O. Bigelow lip gloss, and Tinashe’s backstage necessity.

One writer’s secret to staying dry all summer …

SweatBlock Max Clinical Antiperspirant Wipes 10-Count

While we endure this never-ending heat wave, it seems as though sweat (and how to prevent it) is on everyone’s minds — including our writers’. During a caucus of particularly sweaty Strategist writers , Dominique Pariso advised using these antiperspirant wipes at night to prevent sweating during the day. “Basically, it works better at night because your sweat glands aren’t as active, so it allows it to soak in more,” she told us.

… And an affordable floor fan to seal the deal

Honeywell HT-900 TurboForce Air-Circulator Fan in Black

In other sweaty news, Strategist writer Tembe Denton-Hurst has been using this colorful floor fan since 2016. She says that after bringing it home for the first time, “[I] was so impressed with it that I kept it running nonstop for the next six months, even after I bought the AC.” Eight years later, Denton-Hurst has purchased a few reinforcements, including the same small-but-mighty ventilator in a brilliant blue. She uses it as the sole source of cool air in her home office.

Proof that worthwhile American sunscreens exist

Murad Multi-Vitamin Clear Coat Broad Spectrum SPF 50

After Strategist writer Arielle Avila noticed that American-made sunscreens had been in the hot seat recently, she decided to investigate. Her research turned up a few solid sunscreens made in the U.S., including this broad-spectrum option that comes in a rather cheery container. The formula inside is just as pleasant: “I’ve tried it myself and really enjoyed it,” Avila writes. “The formula has that slippery silicone feel and is a little heavier than other sunscreens I’ve used, but it doesn’t make my skin look oily.”

Tinashe’s backstage nonnegotiable

GoveeLife Smart Humidifiers for Bedroom, 3-Liter Top-Fill Cool Mist Humidifiers With Essential-Oil Diffuser

“I’m big on the mood in a room — especially if I’m traveling, staying in hotels or backstage at venues,” says singer Tinashe . Along with her favorite candle (it’s the Baies scent from Diptyque if you were wondering), she takes this smart humidifier with her everywhere. “It keeps me from drying out,” she says. “I like to add eucalyptus oil, because why not? Just to give it that extra-fresh, spalike feel.”

A “hard-core” muddler to add to your bar cart …

TripleLife 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Muddler

If you caught our guides to the best cocktail jiggers and shakers , you might be intrigued to hear there’s an addition to our bartending lineup: a guide to the very best cocktail muddlers . “I have replaced many plastic and wood muddlers from wear and tear or chipping. But not stainless-steel ones — they’re hard-core,” says Adrienne Gomez-Saddler, who has opened numerous bars and restaurants over the past 20 years. This stainless-steel muddler, which has a serrated end, is her favorite.

… And some dainty coupes from the Ritz Bar in Paris

Nude Hepburn Coupe Glass (Set of Two)

You’re going to need something to put that cocktail in. Consider these crystal coupes, which we heard about from Strategist contributor Maria Yagoda, the author of our new guide to the best coupe glasses . “Because coupe glasses can dress up such a wide variety of drinks, they make a smart glass choice for stocking your home bar,” she says. The Nude coupes are a staple at Paris’s Ritz Bar , where head bartender Romain de Courcy has one tip for at-home bartenders: “Just make sure to put them in the freezer for at least ten minutes before use so they keep the cocktail chilled when you pour it in.”

A peek inside one writer’s go bag

UCO Stormproof Matches

“Whether you’re dealing with a natural disaster, a public-health emergency, or a human-caused disaster, an emergency kit can help you get to safety and stay safe,” writes Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa. Among the food, first-aid, and clothing necessities he keeps in his go bag is this set of stormproof matches. They’re windproof and waterproof (but best kept in a waterproof case for safekeeping). “I have the same ones in my backpacking kit and keep them in a plastic bag along with some kindling — I use extra toilet paper,” he writes.

A dominoes-esque board game

‘Kingdomino’

We found something to pack for your next weekend upstate: Kingdomino , a two-to-four-player board game newly added to our guide to the best adult board games . “In Kingdomino , players use tiles featuring different land types to build kingdoms within a set-size grid,” says Cartamundi tabletop-games ambassador Sean Amdisen-Cooke. Pariso explains the dominoes-esque factor best: “Its name — a portmanteau of kingdom and domino — nods to how you play it: Players can only add a tile to the grid if the one it touches contains a matching land type to theirs (like how you’d match dominoes).”

Chef Alice Waters’s surprise-filled imitation garlic

Anandamayi Arnold Surprise Balls

Gifting season is still a few months away, but chef Alice Waters just tipped us off to one item we’re adding to our mental lists: a crêpe-paper head of garlic that’s full of little delights. “Every time you turn them, you unravel them and there’s a little surprise inside,” she says. “It may be a little ring. It could be a quote from some philosopher. It could be a little candy, a little toy.”

$9 C.O. Bigelow lip gloss one writer has used since high school

C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Tint in Plum Mint No. 1642

“A lot of adulthood, I’ve found, is realizing that the things you liked as a girl are still pretty great,” writes Strategist contributor Nicolaia Rips. While she’s not quite ready to return to winged eyeliner, Rips says that the mint-flavored lip gloss she’s been buying since high school —  an unassuming tube from C.O. Bigelow — is the only one she uses during the ongoing lip-gloss craze. “It gives the lips a sheer reddish-brown hue as if you had just bitten into a small ripe stone fruit. It’s not sticky; it doesn’t glue your lips shut. It’s not drippy — or drying,” she writes.

The Strategist  is designed to surface useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Every product is independently selected by our team of editors, whom you can read about  here . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.

We typically see some of the steepest Prime Day discounts on big-ticket electronics and tech essentials. In this category, noise-canceling headphones , portable speakers, and wearable tech tend to be among the most popular items to shop on Prime Day. Luckily, some of these top deals from Prime Day are still hanging on, including noise-canceling headphones from Apple, Beats, JBL, and Soundcore. Apple AirPods are still on sale, but don't delay adding these to your cart—we don't expect this to last long. Smart watches like the Fitbit Sense 2, Fitbit Charge 6, and Google Pixel 2 are also still up for grabs. And, find deals on waterproof Bluetooth speakers from JBL, Sony, and Bose.

Well-made luggage doesn't come cheap, but with these deals below, travelers can save on an expandable luggage set from SwissGear and a weekender bag from Cluci that features a built-in shoe compartment. If you're planning on camping or hiking this summer, you might be in need of some new outdoor gear. One of our readers' most-purchased items last Prime Day was LifeStraw's personal water filter; the compact filter works as a regular drinking straw while instantly filtering out over 99.999 percent of bacteria, parasites, and sediment such as microplastics, silt, sand, and cloudiness. Plus, it's small enough to fit in any backpack or fanny pack . Portable coolers from Igloo are still on sale, as well as camping tents, beach umbrellas, and portable mugs.

marmot crane creek tent green

Some of the best deals this Prime Day were on premium beauty and skincare, and luckily, some of those deals are still going on. This includes viral lip treatments from Laneige, the pro-collagen cleansing balm from Elemis, and sunscreen from La Rosche-Posay. We're especially excited to see the Shark FlexStyle styling system (originally $300) is still on sale. This TikTok-approved styling system can dry, style, and curl your hair—but it does come with a hefty price tag. There's no better time than now to snap up this popular hair tool. Other hair tools from Shark, Dyson, and Revlon are also still currently discounted.

There are also some deals leftover on home goods to score today. You'll find discounted Keurig coffee makers, Black and Decker handheld vaccums, and Lumineux teeth whitening strips. Make sure to scoop up some Nuun eletrolyte tablets while you can—they are a life saver for hot days in the sun.

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Best Overall

Cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack.

Travel Laptop Backpack

MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack

Borealis Commuter Laptop Backpack

Best for School

The north face borealis commuter laptop backpack.

Your backpack must hold everything you need, whether you're jetting off on a trip or heading into the office. With laptop sleeves, water bottle holders and all sorts of zippered compartments, a backpack needs to fit your necessities without feeling too heavy or bulky.

Fitting more than some carry-on suitcases in our tests, this Cotopaxi travel backpack had a spacious interior that holds everything from our standard packing test and more. The clamshell opening (similar to how a hard-side suitcase opens) makes for easy packing. The mesh compartments separate your clothes while it's still easy to see everything you have packed. It includes thoughtful comfort features like padding in the shoulder straps, chest and hip straps and a breathable mesh back. The shoulder straps tuck away, so you can check this carry-on backpack in a pinch. Our testers appreciated the included raincover if you ever got caught in bad weather, but the bag itself also has a water-resistant coating for extra protection.

This pack is also available in 28L (which makes a great personal item!) and 42L. We think the 35L pack is ideal for most travelers as it fits the same as some carry-on suitcases without getting too heavy or bulky, which can be uncomfortable to carry. When evaluating this bag, we appreciated that the laptop sleeve could easily accommodate a 15-inch laptop. Note that this pack lacks a luggage trolley sleeve, so it doesn't stack easily on rolling luggage.

At just $22, no other pack can beat the value of this MATEIN backpack. It's affordable without sacrificing features like two mesh water bottle holders, padded straps, ample zippered compartments, a padded laptop sleeve and a USB charging port to charge your phone on the go (power bank not included). This bag has over 97,000 reviews on Amazon with 23 different color options. It's sold in two sizes to accommodate either a 15.6-inch or 17-inch laptop.

When evaluating this bag, we were especially impressed with the amount of storage compartments. This pack has a hidden zippered compartment in the back to hold valuables like a passport when traveling. It has two front pockets to hold keys, wallet, phone, pens and more. Plus, it has a luggage trolley on the back to sit conveniently on top of rolling luggage. This pick makes a great personal item when traveling or as an everyday commuter bag!

Head back to campus with a backpack that'll go with you from classes, to the gym, to extracurriculars and back to your dorm. Enter the Borealis backpack from The North Face. We have been recommending this backpack for years because it has a great design for students. Whether you're in high school or college, this pack can hold a laptop (in a separate padded compartment), textbooks, water bottles, notebooks, a sweatshirt and more while still feeling comfortable to carry.

In our Lab evaluation, the exterior fabric held up to abrasion and water-resistance tests. Our testers reported that this pack is comfortable to carry (even when packed to the brim), thanks to the padded straps and the waist and chest straps. We especially liked the thoughtful features, like a fleece-lined zipper pocket for glasses and a front bungee system to hold a jacket. Shop this pick in 18 colors.

Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe

Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe

Nothing ruins a trip quicker than a damaged laptop. Keep your technology safe with this laptop backpack from Timbuk2. It features a separate padded laptop compartment that can even fit larger computers up to 17 inches. There are internal sleeves to hold e-readers and iPads as well. There's generous padding on the back, padded shoulder straps and an optional chest strap to better distribute the pack's weight.

One GH analyst uses this backpack regularly when bringing his laptop to and from work. He even brought this backpack on a recent trip to China and appreciated the built-in luggage trolley sleeve. He said, "It's comfortable to wear and the pockets keep everything I need well organized."

Calpak Terra 26L Laptop Duffel Backpack

Terra 26L Laptop Duffel Backpack

Ditch your suitcase for a quick weekend trip away with this Calpak weekender backpack. It's designed to hold everything you need for a few days away: clothes, footwear, toiletries, a water bottle, books, a laptop and more. The backpack straps can be tucked away and the pack includes a crossbody strap, so you can wear it like a traditional weekender bag — two bags in one!

The pack unzips around the side like a suitcase for easy packing. It includes compression straps that help keep everything in place. There are two spacious front pockets to hold must-have items and a separate padded laptop sleeve for easy access. The sleek exterior is water-resistant and available in 11 shades including classic neutrals and bold hues. "I regularly use this pack on trips because it can fit an impressive amount without becoming uncomfortable to carry," reported one tester. "I use it as a personal item with no carry-on, so I can save a few bucks by avoiding bag fees." One tester did note that the water bottle holder was too small to fit her bottle.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40 L

Black Hole Duffel 40 L

This Patagonia bag's rugged, water-resistant exterior helps protect your items, even in inclement weather. It's made with recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate to prevent water from seeping in. The backpack straps tuck away, so you can wear it either as a backpack or as a traditional duffel bag with an included crossbody strap. When not in use, this backpack stuffs into the small side pocket for convenient, built-in storage . It can be tough to get the duffel in and out of the pocket as it is a tight fit. The Black Hole duffel is avaialble in 40L, 55L , 70L and 100L sizes. We recommend the 40L size as it's spacious enough to fit a week's worth of clothes without feeling too heavy to carry for most people.

If you're looking for a smaller backpack, we recommend the Patagonia Refugio pack ; it's great for everyday wear when traveling as it's made with water-resistant materials and includes a well-organized interior.

Peak Design Travel Backpack

Travel Backpack

Designed for both longer and shorter trips, this innovative Peak Design bag has a 35L capacity but you have the option to compress it to create a 30L day bag or expand it to 45L. This bag also converts to a duffel bag by conveniently tucking the backpack straps away, which is helpful if you ever want to check the bag when flying. You can access the bag's contents from the front, side and back, so it's easy to grab everything you need when on the go. Online reviewers especially liked this feature for easy access to camera equipment when traveling.

The main compartment only has one divider (which can roll down, but isn't removable), so we found it helpful to use packing cubes to keep everything organized. There are small zippered pockets in the front to stash must-have items like a phone, keys, wallet and lip balm.

Osprey Daylite Plus

Daylite Plus

Because you can't go hiking empty handed, bring a lightweight daypack like this top-tested Osprey backpack. This backpack features two stretchy water bottle holders on the side that fit larger bottles. It has padded straps with a chest strap and a removable hip belt for ergonomic support, important on longer hikes. The chest strap includes a built-in whistle to alert other hikers on the trail.

The front compression straps can hold wet or dirty clothes to keep them separate from the main storage compartment. Many online reviewers liked to put a rain jacket there in case they encountered bad weather. It has a separate back compartment that can either hold a hydration pouch or a 14-inch laptop — it's the perfect bag to bring from the trails to the street. Note that this backpack is hand wash only.

TUMI Alpha Bravo Search Backpack

Alpha Bravo Search Backpack

TUMI is known as a status symbol for its luxurious travel products; they offer long-lasting, high-quality products and exemplary customer service. This nylon backpack with leather detailing is a staple among frequent business travelers. It has a sleek, professional look while still being comfortable to carry with padded straps . You have the option to add a customized monogram to the front of the backpack.

Grace Wu , Good Housekeeping Institute textiles product analyst, has tested dozens of backpacks, but she continues to use her 10-year-old TUMI backpack. She reports that it is "surprisingly spacious" and feels "high quality." The brand offers a limited warranty on many of its products with low-cost repairs.

Beis The Backpack

The Backpack

If you want a backpack that'll maximize your packing space without sacrificing style, The Backpack from Beis is ideal. We were immediately impressed with the spacious interior that can fit multiple packing cubes. The top unzips all the way around for easy packing. It features two water bottle holders on the side — testers liked to use one for a water bottle and the other for an umbrella. Some testers wish the holders were stretchy or adjustable to accommodate larger bottles.

The separate padded laptop sleeve makes it easy to grab your computer without unpacking your whole bag. Featuring a luggage trolley sleeve, this bag pairs perfectly with the brand's matching carry-on suitcases . Plus, it's available in eight stylish shades with over 3,000 online reviews (an average 4.8 rating!). This bag is the ultimate travel companion.

Other backpacks to consider

While these packs didn't make the shortlist, they're high quality backpacks that performed well in our testing that you should consider:

JanSport Right Pack Backpack

Right Pack Backpack

A favorite for students from elementary school to college, this popular backpack from JanSport is made with durable, long-lasting materials, including a reinforced suede bottom. It has a simple design with two front pockets and a large interior with a laptop sleeve. It lacks organizational features that can be helpful when traveling, but is a great option for students.

Calpak Kaya Laptop Backpack

Kaya Laptop Backpack

Another great professional option, this faux leather backpack from Calpak has a sleek look that's great for commuters with a separate laptop sleeve and a surprisingly roomy interior. It's also available in 25 colors — multiple GH editors have this bag in bold hues, including pink and purple! While it has an attractive look, this backpack couldn't accommodate bulkier items like shoes or a sweatshirt because of its shape.

Away The Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L

The Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L

Away offers a variety of smart travel products to make your trip easier, including this extra-large 45L convertible backpack. The backpack straps tuck away, so you can use it as a duffel bag. Testers liked the comfortable straps and well-organized interior. Our main concern with this bag is that the zippers sometimes came loose in our testing.

How we test backpacks

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab is comprised of fiber scientists and travel experts who have tested over 50 backpacks in recent tests. Testing styles designed for travel, school, hiking and more, both GH pros and our consumer testers used the backpacks before giving feedback on comfort when wearing a full pack, ease of use, convenience of pockets, appearance and more.

✔️ Backpack strap comfort and fit: We look at each backpack's straps to ensure they have padding and other comfort features like mesh for airflow. We also look for chest and hip straps, especially for hiking backpacks.

✔️ Material durability: Using a specialized abrasion tester, we evaluate the fabric's durability to ensure it will hold up against wear and tear.

✔️ Compartments including a laptop sleeve: We rate each pack's compartments and pockets to ensure there is ample storage space that's easily accessible. We put a laptop in the laptop sleeve to rate how well it fits and is protected.

✔️ How the backpack opens: Backpacks usually have one of two opening types: top opening or front opening.

  • Top-loading backpacks have a zipper around the top of the bag, so it opens to one large compartment that you can fill. These are great to hold must-have items as everything is easily accessible, but they aren't designed to fit clothes and shoes.
  • Front-loading backpacks (also known as clamshell-style packs) unzip around the side so they open up like a book for easy packing. These bags are better suited for packing clothes and toiletries as they will fit more, but items aren't as easily accessible when on the go.

✔️ Packing space: We pack each backpack with a standard load to rate how much each backpack can fit. We also rate the ease of opening and closing the pack when full.

How to choose the best backpack

double line break

Consider where you'll use the backpack before purchasing.

  • Travel: Some travel backpacks are designed to hold what you'll need each day on vacation while larger ones are designed to hold a few days worth of clothes. Clamshell-style packs are best suited for carrying outfits — they can even be used as a personal item if your airline charges for carry-on bags.
  • Hiking: A lightweight pack is a must when heading on a hike. Look for styles with chest and hip straps to better distribute the weight for a more comfortable feel mile after mile. Some hiking backpacks also include a pouch for a hydration pack.
  • Business: Backpacks for business travel must include a padded laptop sleeve and ample space to hold what you need when attending meetings or conferences. Look for sleek materials like leather in neutral shades for a professional look.

Check the pack's total volume and packing space. If you plan to bring your backpack on a plane, compare the bag's dimensions to your airline's allowed personal item or carry-on dimensions to ensure you can bring it onboard.

Look at the backpack's weight. Avoid heavy styles that will weigh you down. Leather tends to be heavy compared to nylon and other synthetics, which are lighter in weight.

Ensure the backpack has the compartments you need. If you plan to bring your laptop with you when traveling, make sure the laptop sleeve can accommodate your laptop's size. In our tests, testers appreciated backpacks with water bottle holders — especially adjustable or stretchy holders to fit larger bottles. Other helpful compartments to look for include sleeves for iPads or e-readers, key holders, hidden zippered compartments for valuables and easily accessible front pockets.
