Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC)

The Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) may not be a name immediately recognized by the average air traveler. However, behind the scenes in the world of travel and tourism, ARC plays a crucial, facilitating role that touches virtually every aspect of air travel. This article will delve into the functions, responsibilities, and impact of the ARC in the travel industry, providing a fresh perspective on this largely unsung yet vital entity.

Established in 1984, the ARC is a bridge between airlines and travel agencies (both traditional and online-based) in the United States. As an airline-owned company, ARC provides ticket transaction settlement services, streamlining the sales and financial process between these parties. It effectively forms an essential backbone to the travel industry, serving more than 200 airlines and 13,000 travel agency locations, along with corporate travel departments, railroads, and other travel suppliers.

One of ARC's critical roles is managing financial transactions between travel agencies and airlines. When you purchase a flight through a travel agency, the ARC oversees the flow of data and money between the agency and the respective airline. This streamlined process provides efficiency and reliability, ensuring all parties involved in the transaction are accurately accounted for and compensated. The vastness of these transactions is quite astounding, with the ARC settling over $97 billion in transactions annually, as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021.

ARC does more than just manage financial transactions; it is also a vital player in data analytics within the travel industry. With an extensive reservoir of ticketing data at its disposal, ARC can provide valuable insights into travel trends and behavior. This data is crucial for airlines, travel agencies, and corporate travel departments to make informed decisions about pricing, marketing, and route development. Thus, ARC's role extends beyond being a financial middleman to being an indispensable information hub that drives strategic decisions within the travel industry.

ARC is also responsible for accrediting travel agencies in the United States. Becoming an ARC-accredited agency is a significant milestone, adding credibility and opening doors for increased collaboration with airlines. Accreditation ensures that the agency meets specific financial, personnel, and business standards, reinforcing confidence in the agency's operational processes and financial stability. As part of the accreditation process, ARC provides education and training to travel agencies, contributing to the industry's overall quality and professionalism.

In the realm of technological innovation, ARC is not a bystander. It continually evolves its tools and services to meet the changing needs of the travel industry. A notable example is the development of the Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD), which enables the sales and reporting of ancillary services through the ARC platform. This innovation provides a more holistic view of revenue and aids airlines and travel agencies in capitalizing on the growing trend of ancillary services.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of ARC became even more critical. With a sudden and dramatic shift in travel patterns, ARC's data provided crucial insights into the impact of the pandemic on the industry. Furthermore, it offered necessary support to airlines and travel agencies navigating through the financial and operational challenges posed by the pandemic.

While the Airline Reporting Corporation may remain behind the scenes from the perspective of the typical air traveler, its influence on the air travel industry is far-reaching. As a financial custodian, data powerhouse, accrediting body, and technology innovator, ARC is a linchpin in the complex ecosystem of air travel. Whether you're an airline seeking to maximize revenue, a travel agency looking to offer the best to your customers, or a corporate travel department aiming to streamline your operations, the role of ARC is paramount in enhancing efficiency, driving growth, and shaping the future of travel.

ARC’s Interactive Agent Reporting (IAR) is an electronic sales reporting system for travel agents and CTDs.

When we opened our office in 1991, we knew we needed to be ARC accredited for the ticketing and reporting tools. Over the years we have learned just how much more valuable ARC is to our business, from its friendly and knowledgeable customer service to innovations in debit memo and ticket resolution. The ARC accreditation sign is a welcome sign of trustworthiness that clients want to see. I really do not believe we could have grown and remained in business without ARC. – Maria Polanco, General Manager, Vallarta’s VIP Travel

Improve Transaction Management

ARC offers a streamlined way to bill and pay for airline transactions to simplify bookkeeping. Agents can view, exchange and modify transactions, leverage financial reports, review and analyze debit memos, and draw on ARC’s industry expertise.

I received my ARC appointment back in 1999, when we had to mail auditor’s coupons in every Tuesday wrapped by an adding machine tape. Fast forward almost 20 years later, and settlement is so much faster … and easier. I can access IAR no matter where I am, even from an airplane, midflight. The BOS file allows me to compare my back office accounting system with IAR, which cuts down on costly errors and potential debit memos. The system works so well that I rarely have to call for assistance, but when I do, ARC’s friendly customer service competently and quickly solves any issues. – Jeffrey L. Erlbaum, President, ETA TRAVEL

This Tour Company Brings Travelers—and Their Glamping Gear—Closer to National Parks

Having guided extensively in the American West for the past 15 years, Andrew Roberts knows his national parks. He can pinpoint the best trails in Yellowstone and the prettiest vistas in Zion , and he's fluent in the logistics of getting visitors into and out of the parks. He also knows how difficult it can be to find the right lodging. Campgrounds inside the parks have amazing access, but they tend to be filled with RVs, noisy generators, and crowds, not to mention the fact that park campsites and lodges can easily book up a year in advance or have limited availability.

That's why in 2010 Roberts created American Safari Camp [ASC], a bespoke camping service that finds isolated spots near (but not in) national parks. Roberts and his team began building pop-up glamping-style accommodations using light-on-the-land principles, with all the creature comforts like en suite toilets and hot water showers, and providing customized itineraries. Think walking out of your tent along the Grand Canyon 's north rim in the morning, hiking the Arizona Trail all day, then returning to camp for s'mores around your own private campfire—with zero other visitors in sight.

Until now, ASC has exclusively sourced commercial permits on federal lands adjacent to national parks. But a new partnership launching this May with Vermejo, a Ted Turner Reserve , brings the ASC concept to one of the largest privately owned land holdings in the United States. Located in New Mexico , Vermejo sprawls out along the Colorado border for 550,000 acres, an area larger than the most-visited national park, Great Smoky Mountains —and one so vast that Vermejo guests often end up seeing only a tiny fraction of it during their stay. “I've spent a total of 40 days there and I haven't even seen half of the property,” said Roberts. One of the more popular excursions for Vermejo guests is to visit abandoned 19th-century kilns that were used to turn wood into charcoal for the railroads. “The kilns are as far as you can go and return to Vermejo's permanent lodge in a day,” Roberts noted, “but we can put a camp by the kilns and guests can explore even more remote corners of the reserve.”

Building out new sites isn't as easy as just pitching a tent, however. On one scouting trip, Roberts and his team inadvertently set up camp in a bison grazing path. The next morning they found themselves in the middle of a herd. While it was thrilling, Roberts learned that there's such a thing as being too up close and personal with nature. “ Bison love to scratch their backs on whatever they can find,” he said. “You don't want a 1,200-pound animal scratching its back on your tent.” And while setting up on private land may provide more leeway to create unique experiences than national parks, there's still a lot of factors to consider. Roberts worked with Ted Turner Reserves' scientists and wildlife managers for over five years to bring the Vermejo partnership to fruition, locating the perfect campsites that allow visitors to best explore—but not disrupt—the landscape. The goal was to create guest experiences that mimic, or even go beyond, what they might do in the national parks.

“Vermejo has bears, coyotes, and mountain lions—but these animals haven't seen or been seen by millions of people like the animals in our national parks have—it's a much more intimate experience here,” said Roberts. “It's the closest thing I've experienced in America to being on a true safari .”

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse

Hearing the Eclipse:  A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they can’t see .

Maine Brac es Itself :  Businesses and planning committees are eager for visitors, but some in remote Aroostook County are not sure how they feel  about lying smack in the path of totality.

A Dark Day for Buffalo:  When the sky above Buffalo briefly goes dark  on the afternoon of April 8, the city will transcend its dreary place in the public consciousness — measured as it so often is by snowstorms — if only for about three minutes. The city can’t wait.

Under the Moon’s Shadow:  The late Jay Pasachoff, who spent a lifetime chasing eclipses , inspired generations of students to become astronomers by dragging them to the ends of the Earth for a few precarious moments of ecstasy.

A Rare Return:  It is rare for a total solar eclipse to hit the same place twice — once every 366 years on average. People in certain areas will encounter April 8’s eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the “Great American Eclipse.”

A Small City’s Big Plans:  Let the big cities have their eclipse mega-events. In Plattsburgh, N.Y., success looks different  for everyone stopping to look up.

No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.

U.S. Department of the Treasury

Secretary of the treasury janet l. yellen to travel to the people’s republic of china.

WASHINGTON – From April 3-9, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen will travel to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for bilateral meetings and other engagements.

Secretary Yellen’s visit to China will build on the intensive diplomacy she has engaged in to responsibly manage the bilateral economic relationship and advance American interests. Following initial meetings with the PRC’s new economic team last July in Beijing, Secretary Yellen met with her counterpart Vice Premier He Lifeng in San Francisco, California, in advance of President Biden’s meeting with President Xi. At Secretary Yellen and Vice Premier’s direction, both sides jointly launched Economic and Financial Working Groups , which report to the Secretary and Vice Premier, and which have met three times.

In an April 2023 speech , Secretary Yellen laid out three principles guiding America’s economic relationship with the PRC. These principals continue to guide our engagement today. The United States proceeds with confidence in our economic strength thanks to our historically strong recovery and the investments the Biden Administration is making in America’s productive capacity. In the context of this relationship, America first seeks to secure our national security interests along with those of our allies and to protect human rights. Second, we seek a healthy economic relationship with China that provides a level playing field for American workers and firms. Finally, we also seek to cooperate where we can on key bilateral and global priorities.

During her engagements in China, Secretary Yellen will advocate for American workers and businesses to ensure they are treated fairly, including by pressing Chinese counterparts on unfair trade practices and underscoring the global economic consequences of Chinese industrial overcapacity. Secretary Yellen will also work to expand bilateral cooperation on countering illicit finance, which can drive important progress on shared efforts against criminal activity such as drug trafficking and fraud. In China, the Secretary will also engage her counterparts on critical work that benefits both the United States and China, as well as the world, including work to bolster financial stability, address climate change, and resolve debt distress among developing nations.

Trip Details

On Wednesday, April 3, Secretary Yellen will depart Washington, DC for Guangzhou, the People’s Republic of China. On Thursday, April 4, she will arrive in Guangzhou.

On Friday, April 5, in the morning, Secretary Yellen will hold a roundtable discussion with economic experts to discuss challenges and opportunities in the PRC’s economy. Secretary Yellen will then meet with Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong. In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will participate in an event with leading representatives of the American business community in China, hosted by AmCham China, and deliver remarks on the bilateral economic relationship. In the late afternoon, Secretary Yellen will begin extended bilateral meetings with Vice Premier He Lifeng.

On Saturday, April 6, Secretary Yellen will continue and then conclude a series of bilateral meetings with Vice Premier He. In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will depart Guangzhou for Beijing.

On Sunday, April 7, Secretary Yellen will participate in a bilateral meeting with Premier Li Qiang. Later, Secretary Yellen will meet with Beijing Mayor Yin Yong. In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will meet with students and professors at Peking University. In the evening, the Secretary will participate in a bilateral meeting with Finance Minister Lan Fo’an. While in Beijing, Secretary Yellen will also meet with leading Chinese economists.

On Monday, April 8, Secretary Yellen will meet with former Vice Premier Liu He of the People’s Republic of China. Later, she will hold a bilateral meeting with People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng.

In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will hold a press conference, during which she will deliver remarks discussing her trip to China. This press conference will be livestreamed here .

On Tuesday, April 9, Secretary Yellen will depart Beijing for Washington, DC. In the evening, she will arrive in Washington, DC.

More details will follow.

Eclipse expected to cause travel chaos; here’s how to navigate the roads and skies

(CNN) - Millions of Americans are expected to travel to see the total solar eclipse on April 8. Cities and towns along the route of totality are expecting big crowds.

While the boost in visitors is good for local economies, the extra people are expected to cause chaos on the roads and in the skies.

“You really need to plan ahead to be safe,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations for AAA Western and Central New York.

Communities from Mexico to Canada are in the path of totality, meaning the moon will completely cover the sun, creating total darkness during daylight. Some areas like western New York are expecting a million visitors.

AAA has several tips for drivers like navigating the old-fashioned way with a map, especially if you’re traveling in less populated areas.

“In a very rural area, you’re talking about wilderness with no cell service,” Carey said.

AAA also recommends drivers not try and watch the eclipse while driving, have their headlights on, don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving, and watch out for animals.

“It could trigger wildlife to be out and about,” said Carey.

If you’re flying, the Federal Aviation Administration is warning travelers to expect long lines and possible delays at airports. Monday’s eclipse falls during the busy spring break travel season.

The FAA says they’re expecting more than 46,000 flights the day after the eclipse.

April 8, 2024, Solar Eclipse Will Pass Over All 7 US Cities Named Nineveh?

Some christian groups have preached that the eclipse is a bad omen., published march 31, 2024.

False

About this rating

On April 8, 2024 , a total solar eclipse will blot out the sun for a couple of minutes in a small band across the United States. The eclipse's totality is the only time humans can look directly at the sun without damaging their eyeballs, and so millions of people from around the world will flock to cities in the path of totality, such as Dallas and Indianapolis.

Eclipses do not discriminate, so anyone in the path of totality will be able to see the sun fully obstructed by the moon. However, some people  have claimed online that there's one interesting coincidence about the eclipse's path of totality: It will pass through every city in the United States named Nineveh. That name is shared by an ancient city in modern-day Iraq that was described in the bible as "evil."

Snopes received an email from a reader who requested that we check the claim about cities named Nineveh in the eclipse path. In our research, we discovered that many of the people making the claim were Christians who were interpreting the eclipse as a bad omen .

Contrary to the claims, Snopes discovered that the path of totality in the eclipse does not pass through seven cities in the United States named Nineveh — it passes through just two. But before counting places named Nineveh, we must first briefly clarify how eclipses work.

How Eclipses Work

A total solar eclipse is caused by the moon and the sun being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. The moon fully blocks the light from the sun, casting a really large shadow on the earth. Those inside the moon's shadow, called the umbra, are the only ones who will be able to look directly at the sun without eye protection, and it's the small path of the umbra that people travel to in order to see the total solar eclipse. The website GreatAmericanEclipse.com created a visualization of the shadow's path across North America.

Outside the umbra, where the moon blocks only some of the sun, is called a partial solar eclipse, and the sun looks like it has a giant bite taken out of it. You cannot view a partial solar eclipse without special eclipse glasses, and this area is much, much larger than the umbra. The entirety of the continental United States will be able to see a partial solar eclipse on April 8, just as the entirety of the United States (even Alaska and Hawaii) was able to see a partial solar eclipse in  2017 .

The cool part (partial) of an eclipse can be seen from a very large area, as long as you wear eclipse glasses. The really cool part (total) of an eclipse can be seen only in a small area. It is the total eclipse that people have thought held religious significance since practically as long as humans have had eyes to see and religions to follow.

To quote the essayist Annie Dillard :

A partial eclipse is very interesting. It bears almost no relation to a total eclipse. Seeing a partial eclipse bears the same relation to seeing a total eclipse as kissing a man does to marrying him, or as flying in an airplane does to falling out of an airplane. Although the one experience precedes the other, it in no way prepares you for it.

Places Named Nineveh

We started with Wikipedia's list of places named Nineveh to get a general idea of where to look. Of course, we cross checked those results with more-reliable sources of knowledge, including Google Maps and data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Wikipedia listed just six places in the U.S. named Nineveh, which made our claim of seven dubious to begin with. Checking the locations of those places on Google Maps, we found that three were actually townships, a term used for county subdivisons in some states.

The first was the largest, Indiana's Nineveh Township (south of Indianapolis), which contains a small hamlet of the same name. Both the township and the hamlet will indeed fall in the path of the total eclipse.

Next, Wikipedia listed two townships in Missouri — one in Adair County (about halfway between Kansas City and Davenport, Iowa) and one in Lincoln County (about an hour northwest of St. Louis). But neither of the two townships contained a village named Nineveh on any of the maps we looked at. Furthermore, neither of the townships fell in the path of the total eclipse.

The fourth place on Wikipedia's list, Nineveh, New York, is about 30 minutes east of Binghamton. We found it marked on maps but, again, it did not lie in the path of totality.

Fifth: Nineveh, Pennsylvania, roughly halfway between Pittsburgh and Morgantown, West Virginia. This Nineveh was marked on maps, but it was also outside of the total eclipse. It was also the last Nineveh listed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Sixth, we found Nineveh, Virginia, an hour and a half west of Washington, D.C. This was the easiest to check: Nobody in the state of Virginia will be able to see full totality during the eclipse. We did not find a label for Nineveh on maps, and buildings located in the area had their postal addresses listed as White Post, Virginia.

That completed the Wikipedia list, but various posts about the supposed line-up listed two more Ninevehs located in the U.S.: one in Texas and one in Ohio.

Nineveh, Texas, was not marked on maps, nor did it have a post office. It was located not far off of Interstate 45 halfway between Houston and Dallas. This one was close, but we eventually confirmed that it would be outside of the zone of totality by referencing nearby cities that also were outside of totality.

Nineveh, Ohio, was a similar story: not found on maps, no post office, no Census data. But this Nineveh, 30 minutes northwest of Dayton, was finally our second hit.

In total, we counted two places named Nineveh in the United States that could be found in the path of totality.
