Why study in Nijmegen – the ultimate Dutch student city!
Nijmegen, Holland… not the most famous spot in The Netherlands , however a gem city to be discovered by the most adventurous of students! In this piece of work we’ve gathered the most important characteristics Nijmegen, a scenic Central Dutch settlement has to offer with regards to the life an international student could have if they chose it as their next study abroad destination. Let’s find them out together I would say, no?
Lively student city!
Full of history
Nijmegen as a settlement is as old as the time. First time attested as a city back in the Roman Empire era (when it had the name of ‘New Market’ or ‘Noviomagus’ in Latin), Nijmegen is a historically-rich city that has a lot to offer to history aficionados. The architecture isn’t bad either, so if you’re all about exploring old Dutch streets and buildings, Nijmegen is the place to go.
The city of Nijmegen is literally situated in the midpoint of The Netherlands. What does that mean? Well, since the country isn’t really that huge itself, you could be in any other Dutch within 1h 30mins by car! Also, let’s not exclude that being close to the German border, all other Western European countries are super easily accessible as well. Cheers to travelling and travellers ?
Last but not least, the level of education. It is pretty high. Nijmegen hosts one of the leading, most reputed Dutch universities, that is – Radboud University . With outstanding results with regards to academia and research shown over the decades, it has proven as a top higher education institution training international students and turning them into global leaders in their industries.
Online Open Days
Got your attention? Why don’t you check out their one of a kind Master’s in Economics ? If you’re not about crunching numbers, you can also have a look at the other courses we are promoting for Radboud University !

Student Life in Nijmegen

Student life in a cosy town named Nijmegen.
Nijmegen is a student-friendly city with lots of new coming students from all around the world. Nijmegen is known for cycling and is also called the Cycling capital of the Netherlands in 2016. Of course, whenever you are in the Netherlands always be prepared for rain. But this does not take away the beauty of Nijmegen. You as a student can grab a cup of coffee always everywhere. A lovely place to get some coffee is First Things First, which is next to the ‘Waal’ river.

Also, the bikes of the royal family are shown there and many more. It’s very interesting to go there as the Netherlands is the bike capital of the world. Therefore, it’s good to go to Velorama as you will learn some Dutch history as well.
The face of Nijmegen – through the eyes of the past, is what the sculpture is called. This Face is 6 meters high and 4.5 meters wide. This face functioned as face protection from a roman soldier 2000 years ago. The artist from Nijmegen Andreas Hetfeld made their own creation from face protection.

Depression could be ‘zapped’ away with brain stimulation: study.
Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
For those with severe depression, relief could soon be just an MRI away.
In a major clinical trial, researchers from the University of Nottingham in the U.K. applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the brains of 255 patients with treatment-resistant depression over a total of 20 sessions.
The patients reported “substantial improvements” in their symptoms and quality of life for at least six months after the procedure, according to a press release from the university.
More than two-thirds of participants responded to the treatment, with a third showing 50% improvement in symptoms.
For one-fifth of the patients, their depression did not return.
“Given that these patients are people who have not responded to two previous treatment attempts and have been ill for an average of seven years, to get such a significant response rate and a fifth who have a sustained response is really encouraging,” lead researcher Richard Morriss, professor of psychiatry at the University of Nottingham, told Fox News Digital, said in the release.
The findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine on Jan. 16.
“Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a well-established treatment for depression that is available in many but not all centers, unlike antidepressants, ECT and psychological treatments, which are available anywhere,” Morriss told Fox News Digital.
Previously, TMS has been delivered in a less effective and precise way, Morriss said, and the results didn’t last as long.
“The importance of this research is that for the first time, in a large enough randomized controlled trial, the benefits on depression lasted six months or more,” he said.
“Not only that, but on average, one in two people [who received] the TMS had a substantial benefit in depression lasting at least six months — enough to improve their anxiety and make them think clearly, function better and have a better quality of life.”
The researchers used an MRI scan to personalize the site of the magnetic stimulation for each patient, Morriss noted.
“We used a neuronavigation system, or tracking system, to ensure that the same site was hit for all 20 TMS sessions, [even] if the person sat in a slightly different position or moved slightly,” he said.
Ninety-two percent of the study participants completed the full treatment, said Morriss, with only “minor side effects” that lasted less than a day.
The study did have some limitations, Morriss acknowledged.
The researchers were not able to include a placebo group, as it was deemed “ethically and clinically unacceptable” to give a placebo treatment for as long as six months to such a seriously ill group of people, he said.
“So we do not know for sure how much of the TMS effect is real and how much is due to other factors,” he noted. “It seems likely that a high proportion of the effect is due to TMS.”
Not every center offering TMS can access MRI technology, Morriss said, but many sites across the U.S. and Canada do have the equipment.
“The additional cost and lack of availability of MRI or the expertise to use it is something that doctors and insurers will need to consider,” he added.
Alex Dimitriu, M.D., a psychiatrist and founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine in California, was not involved in the Nottingham study but reviewed the findings.
“There is no doubt that magnetic brain stimulation can be an effective treatment for depression, and this study, using targeted magnetic pulses, further reinforces the efficacy of this treatment,” he said.
A similar type of focused magnetic therapy was developed at Stanford, which found similar strong positive outcomes, Dimitriu said.
“Notably, these therapies can be expensive and somewhat time-consuming — however, the benefits to people who have suffered for years are quite remarkable,” he said.
For anyone dealing with a treatment-resistant psychiatric condition, Dimitriu emphasized the importance of correcting and optimizing sleep before gauging the effectiveness of any treatment.
In 2023, 29%of Americans reported having been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives, while 17.8% said they currently suffer from it.

Travel-induced stress on student-athletes focus of UH Hilo study
- January 23, 2024
A physiologist at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is investigating how stress hormones affect the bodies and brains of student-athletes who repetitively fly to the U.S. continent for away games. Linc Gotshalk, a professor of kinesiology and exercise science and director Laboratory for Therapeutic Sciences at UH Hilo, is heading the study, which focuses on data collected from UH Hilo athletes.
“We’re on an island. That means that athletic teams who do not have home games here on the island, but all away games, they have to fly, and flight can be a perturbation, which means it can be a stress factor,” said Gotshalk, a musculoskeletal physiologist, anatomist and exercise physiologist.
Hawaiʻi’s travel challenges
Traditionally, Hawaiʻi’s college athletes are amongst the most-traveled, by far. Last season the UH Hilo women’s volleyball team played 12 away games and racked up more than 16,000 air miles. However, recent shake-ups in college athletics conferences are reshaping the playing field, and more athletes across the nation will face an increase in travel distances.
Flight effects on body
According to Gotshalk, two notable stressors that can impact the body are changes in cabin pressure in flight, and changes in time zones. In the study, UH Hilo student research assistants help Gotshalk hone in on the presence of cortisol which increases as humans are exposed to stressors.
“What we’re studying is stress physiology, which includes huge amounts of hormonal changes due to stress,” explained Gotshalk. “Stress in the short term is a needed thing in life, so you can run from the tiger, so you can fight a war, whatever it be. [But] psychogenic stress, where you’re not actually using energy, can pump stuff into the system that’s meant to be used. That, then, repeatedly ends up being a problem because stuff gets put in inappropriate places after a while.”
Excess amounts of cortisol can lead to chronic health conditions such as diabetes, Gotshalk said.
A closer look
Student researchers at UH Hilo compared data collected from female athletes on the campus’ volleyball team.
“My peers and I got hands-on experience of cortisol testing with the UH women’s volleyball team,” a student investigator involved with the study said. “We did anthropometric measurements and took saliva samples pre and post season on the volleyball team to see if there was a correlation between stress and traveling east.”
The research team found a correlation between cortisol rise, body measurements and biological characteristics however the results of the study are not yet conclusive and will be published at a later date.

Rapes led to more than 64,000 pregnancies in US states with abortion bans, study estimates
- United States
- Thursday 25 January 2024 at 1:18pm
More than 64,000 pregnancies happened as a result of rape in the US in the states that totally banned abortion following the overturning of Roe vs Wade in 2022 , a study estimates.
A total of 14 states banned abortion entirely , and in those states 519,981 cases of rape led to 64,565 pregnancies in the four to 18 months, depending on area, where the bans were in effect.
Some states have exceptions to the abortion ban in the case of rape, but there are strict time limits on when the abortion must happen and survivors must report the assault to the police.
This disqualifies the majority of rape cases, the study highlighted, as only 21% of people who are raped report the incident to the police.
The study , led by Samuel Dickman, medical director at Planned Parenthood of Montana, and published by the medical journal JAMA International Medicine on Wednesday, involved using a series of data sets to estimate the number of reported and unreported rape cases in states with total abortion bans.
The number of resulting pregnancies was then estimated based on previous research on rape-related pregnancy rates.
The study found that while tens of thousands of women and girls were becoming pregnant as a result of rape, very few, if any, were then able to have legal, in-state abortions, despite the exceptions in place in certain states in the case of assault.
On average there are ten or fewer legal abortions per month in states where exceptions are in place, the study said.
Around 9% of rape-related pregnancies occurred in states with abortion allowances for exceptional circumstances, meaning that 91%, or 58,979 cases of pregnancy, occurred in states without any abortion provisions for those who fall pregnant as a result of rape.
Texas was estimated to have the highest number of pregnancies resulting from rape, at around 26,313, or 45% of the total number across the 14 states included.
Survivors of rape who become pregnant in states with total abortion bans may seek a "self-managed" abortion or try to travel, often hundreds of miles, to seek out a legal abortion , the study said.
These are not viable options for many women and girls, leaving them with little alternative to carrying the pregnancy to full term.
The study did highlight the limitations of its findings, including the fact that the lack of accurate national data on such a stigmatised topic posed challenges in terms of making the estimations.
The overturning of Roe vs Wade in June 2022 was hugely controversial , and was described by US President Joe Biden as "a sad day" . The US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place for nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority.
Some states have fought hard against the ruling, for example people in Ohio voted to enshrine the right to abortion and other forms of health care in the US state's constitution in November.
The Supreme Court also voted to preserve access to a widely-used abortion pill in April 2023, but only while the legal case continues so as not to disrupt access to the drug in the meantime.
