11 Powerful Soul Searching Trips in the USA
You don’t have to travel far from home to find yourself. Return with a new perspective.
It is a common misconception that the deepest soul searching trips require you to travel to exotic places across the globe. However, some of the greatest self-discoveries can take place in your own national “backyard.”
Venturing out to new places and experiences will force you to find a new normal and adapt in ways that you never thought possible. Along the way, you’ll discover surprising insights about what it is that makes you tick.
Maybe you’ve always imagined yourself as an extrovert, but on this journey, you realize that sometimes all it takes to recharge is a day curled up with a good book and some hot tea.
Maybe your trip provides the opportunity to delve into some deep introspection about your life so far—perhaps for the first time ever—and after coming back home, you realize there are important changes that have to be made in order for your life to align more closely with who you are at your core.
Let this list of amazing places in the United States begin your soul searching quest for peace and happiness.
1) Santa Barbara, California
Santa Barbara, California, is a place to reflect and unwind. There are many places in California known for their extravagant or flashy lifestyle and architecture, but Santa Barbara stands out from the rest with its charm and simple way of life. You can easily find yourself spending time doing outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, or sunrise beach yoga.
2) Volunteer at a National Park
Volunteering at a national park is an easy and rewarding way to search your soul by being in nature and giving back. The US National Park System contains some of the most iconic natural and cultural treasures in the world, including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Death Valley, and many others. Volunteering at one of these incredible places is like saying “thank you” to the Earth — and it can be as simple as spending time in beautiful nature that you would have visited anyway.
While volunteering at a national park looks different for everyone involved, you can choose from a large variety of roles. You may do trail building, habitat restoration, research projects, or maintenance work.
There are tons of opportunities available all over the country — get started by visiting www.volunteer.gov today!
3) Sedona, Arizona
A trip to Sedona, Arizona, is a perfect way to recharge your spiritual batteries. The city in the desert offers plenty of experience-based wellness and healing opportunities (like spas), so you can become more self-aware while also enjoying time outdoors. Additionally, there are many energy vortexes located around the area, which serve as strong spots for focusing your mind and channeling your personal energy into positive life decisions.
4) Hike the Appalachian Trail.
A highly adventurous and fairly long soul-searching trip in the United States is to hike the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail is about 2,190 miles long and goes through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. The trail passes through Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Multi-week or month travel is a fantastic way to release stress and detach from pressing responsibilities.
5) Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Want to bask in the artistic & cultural melting pot of the American Southwest? Take a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Santa Fe has also become known as a haven for artists and writers seeking inspiration. The writer D.H. Lawrence called New Mexico his “dream country,” and Georgia O’Keeffe found life and beauty in the strange desert terrain that was so different from her native Wisconsin. Enjoy hiking trails where wildflowers bloom even before snow melts; contemplate life while climbing up to an observation point at Hyde Memorial State Park; or visit Museum Hill where four museums with diverse collections sit side by side within walking distance of each other.
But what makes Santa Fe truly special is how it remains a center of faith. Although its nickname is “The City Different,” Santa Fe has been attracting pilgrims ever since its founding in 1610 when it was first established as a Spanish colony. Since then, millions more have traveled here to find deeper meaning in their lives.
6) National 9/11 Memorial in New York, NY.
The National 9/11 Memorial in New York City, NY is a place designed to help the nation feel connected to each other and to remember the past. This memorial was built at Ground Zero, on the site where two of the Twin Towers once stood. The location is a very emotional and reflective spot for visitors.
Two reflecting pools fill the footprints of what used to be the Twin Towers. They stand in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The names of every single person who perished are engraved around the pools.
Visitors can spend time there reflecting on how much our world has changed since this event happened and what we have learned from it as a nation. Education is an important part of this site’s purpose; they offer classes, lectures and exhibits that help teach visitors about 9/11, its aftermath and lessons learned in hopes that something like it will never happen again.
7) The Washington Monument and the National Mall, Washington DC.
The world’s tallest obelisk, the Washington Monument stands 555 feet tall and 555 feet wide at the base. It is made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss and symbolizes the everlasting strength of American democracy. You can visit this monument and many other attractions in the National Mall, a park-like grassy area located near downtown Washington DC. The mall is also home to the White House and several Smithsonian museums (which are all free). The mall is also where you can see such famous memorials as:
- Vietnam War
- Lincoln Memorial
- World War Two
The Washington Monument was dedicated in 1885 as a memorial to George Washington, who was the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797.
8) Take a trip to the majestic Redwood Forest in California
If you’re looking to really get away from it all and go on a soul-searching trip, the Redwood Forest in California is the perfect place to visit. The trail is an excellent spot for hiking or biking, with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view along the way. Before setting off, be sure to grab a map from the visitor center; there are lots of places to explore, so it’s a good idea to have a plan before you go. If you’re planning on going hiking or biking, arrive early in the morning (before everyone else gets there); otherwise, if you’d prefer more people around for security reasons, try visiting later in the day.
No matter what time of day you visit, remember that this is one of the most beautiful places in America—there are lots of great photo opportunities! Don’t forget your camera! Also don’t forget your water: even if you’re only planning on spending an hour or two here (which we strongly advise against), dehydration can sneak up on you quickly when it’s hot outside. Finally, don’t forget your lunch! There’s nothing better than eating your lunch while enjoying nature at its finest.
9) Experience the life of a Buddhist monk in Utah.
At the Bodhi Manda Zen Center, you can experience life as a Buddhist monk in the desert. This is a place to get away from your phone, from social media, from the stress of your job. It’s a place to find your inner peace and calm.
This retreat is run by a Buddhist monk and his wife and is located in beautiful New Mexico. The center offers space for meditation classes open to everyone, but this isn’t really what most people are here for: there are plenty of other places you can learn how to meditate without spending thousands of dollars on travel. This retreat is designed so that it’s impossible to hide behind anything: no friends or family with whom you can share the experience or check-in with (except maybe once daily), no screens that will distract you, no books or music to keep you comfortable—just yourself and your thoughts.
10) Climb to the top of the highest mountain in North America at Mount McKinley, Denali Park, Alaska.
It’s hard to imagine that a place as bustling and noisy as the USA could have any soul-searching hideaways. However, you’d be surprised at how many places exist for reflection and quiet contemplation in the United States. One of these places is Mount McKinley, also known as Denali Park. It’s one of the most beautiful mountains on earth, standing at 20,320 feet tall.
Its isolated peaks are ideal for hiking and rock climbing when it isn’t covered with snow or ice. If you’re considering a trip up to its peak, keep in mind that most hikers will need several months to prepare themselves physically, get necessary equipment and acquire mountain climbing experience if they don’t have any yet. However, it’s not an impossible feat: plenty of people climb this mountain every year! Just make sure you’re in good physical condition before attempting to scale Denali Park; otherwise it can be quite dangerous and difficult at such high altitudes without being prepared properly beforehand!
11) Find yourself along Route 1 from Key West, Florida through Maine.
If you’re looking for a way to find yourself, look no further than a nice road trip along Route 1. It extends for 2,369 miles from Key West, Florida through Maine. This road trip will take you through 13 states and can be completed in one direction or broken up into multiple trips.
The route starts at the end of the Florida Keys and passes through Miami, Jacksonville, Savannah and Charleston on its way to Washington D.C. After passing through Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania is when the fun really begins as it travels along the coast of Connecticut into Rhode Island before reaching Massachusetts. Once in Massachusetts it’s just a quick trip north to Maine where you can hike Acadia National Park or explore Bar Harbor before hitting the open road again.
You will find what you are looking for if you take some time during your trip to stop and think about what that is
Take the time to reflect on what your expectations are. It is totally fine if you don’t know what you want from the trip and if you think you will find out after letting yourself drift along. It is also perfectly fine if all you want to do during this trip is party! There are no rules about what a soul searching journey should be like. The most important thing is that it brings peace and reflection for each individual who participates in it, and everyone will have a different experience based on their style of travel and mindset.
It is also common to feel lost along the way which some people will see as a negative aspect but I would argue it is an essential part of the process! You need to first lose yourself before finding yourself again. Don’t be afraid of uncertainty, embrace it and let yourself go with the flow while enjoying your time beautiful locations throughout the United States of America!

If you’re anything like us, after more than a year of being cooped up inside, the drive to get out and explore is real! A great spot to take a selfie? Sure, that’s cool. But we’re not looking for just another pretty place. Right now, it’s a deeper and more meaningful travel experience that’s calling.
For some, that might mean a spa getaway. Others find fulfillment in more eye-opening cultural pursuits—seeing great works of art , tasting incredible culinary delights or sipping fine wine. And, of course, connecting with nature can be thoroughly invigorating.
Because a transformative trip is what just about everyone needs at the moment, we’ve rounded up seven U.S. vacation destinations guaranteed to reinvigorate your soul.
10 TRAVEL TRENDS FOR 2021
1. Sedona, Az
There’s something incredibly therapeutic about communing with nature—and it certainly doesn’t hurt to do so in such a staggeringly beautiful place. Insert Sedona. This deeply spiritual destination boasts some of the most magical scenery anywhere in the world. Need some solo time? Strike out on a less-trafficked trail like Wilson Mountain and you’ll feel like the only person on the planet. Staring at the enormous red rock formations just really puts things in perspective. The landscape isn’t the only thing that promises spiritual awakening. You can stock up on healing crystals at the New Age shops in downtown Sedona.
Where to stay:
- Casa Sedona Inn (2 guests) : $279/night
- L'Auberge de Sedona (2 guests) : $399/night
- 2009 Four Winds Majestic 23A (7 guests) : $168/night

Feeling drained? Taos is a pilgrimage-worthy Southwestern city with reinvigorating energy and a mystical side. This longtime mecca for creatives, adventurers and wellness seekers will refill your cup in so many ways. Marvel at the mythical light on an early morning stroll. Do yoga in the high desert. Navigate the trails along the banks of the Rio Grande. Indulge in an aromatherapy spa ritual or unwind with a trip to the healing mineral pools—said to be a cure-all for whatever ails you. Taos also has rustic ranches that offer horseback riding (equine therapy, anyone?) and a flourishing arts community.

- The Dobson House (4 guests) : $178/night
- Cozy House (6 guests) : $129/night
3. Calistoga, Ca
Tucked away in the northern end of Napa Valley, Calistoga entices weary travelers with its natural hot springs, wineries and low-key ambiance. Plus, its under-the-radar status means fewer tourists than the nearby towns of St. Helena and Yountville. Simply put: This all-too-often overlooked gem is the ultimate spot for R&R. Stressed out? Alleviate tension with deep-tissue massages and facials at a traditional spa or take a dip in one of the area’s mineral-rich mud baths. Obviously, your itinerary will include wine tasting. We love the relaxed vibe and terroir-driven sips at Tamber Bey Vineyards.
Where to stay
- Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa (2 guests) : $249/night
- The Inn on Pine (2 guests) : $597/night
- Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection (2 guests) : $889/night
4. Kauai, Hi
Leave your iPhone at home (or, at least, turn it to airplane mode). Kauai is the perfect place to unplug and reconnect to the natural world. “The Garden Isle” very much lives up to its moniker. Expect an abundance of lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, majestic mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls. The most spellbinding vantage point? From above. Gazing at the glory of the Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park and 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon from a Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour is nothing short of a religious experience. There are also gorgeous hiking trails, oceanfront golf courses and pampering spas, if that’s more your idea of a revitalizing escape.

5. Zion National Park, Ut
Located in southwest Utah, Zion National Park brims with breathtaking scenery—high plateaus, steep cliffs, deep canyons, forested trails, flowing rivers and waterfalls. Exploring this majestic natural preserve is a true mind, body and soul experience. Strenuous treks like Observation Point will push you physically. Covering 148,016 acres with tons of remote corners, Zion National Park provides ample space to be alone with your thoughts. So if you’re seeking a sense of mental clarity, consider it found. And, needless to say, the sheer grandeur of Zion Canyon is all but guaranteed to awaken spiritual awareness.

- Zion Canyon Lodge (2 guests) : $449/night
- Secluded 10-Acre Estate (10 guests) : $595/night
6. Lake Placid, Ny
The name says it all. Lake Placid is an utterly tranquil destination known for its fresh mountain air, crystal clear water, cozy inns and full-service spas. In between nature walks, forest bathing rituals and stress-melting massages, carve out some time to sit in stillness. Our favorite setup for reveling in the silence? Spread out a blanket on an empty stretch of shoreline and crack open a self-actualization book or listen to a guided meditation. In the evening, Adirondack chairs and a crackling fire set the stage for a perfectly peaceful night that includes a solid eight hours of shut eye.
- Town House Lodge (2 guests) : $120/night
- The Whiteface Lodge (2 guests) : $455/night
- Newly Renovated Home (10 guests) : $500/night
7. Joshua Tree National Park, Ca
Yes, it’s an Instagram goldmine. But most people go to Joshua Tree National Park for the purpose of getting up close and personal with nature (epic photos are just a bonus). The desert really does have this incredibly healing energy. Plus, it’s just so serene. Soul-searchers can hoof it to the middle of nowhere, stare out at the arid landscape and enjoy uninterrupted quiet to think. Joshua Tree National Park also shines as one of the best places in the country, err the world, for stargazing. Peering up at the celestial bodies in the sky is sure to shift your perspective on things.
- Golden Barrel Homestead (4 guests) : $273/night
- Abstractionist (4 guests) : $327/night
- Shadow Mountain House (4 guests) : $344/night

10 Best Places in The World to Do Soul Searching
Where is the best place in the world to do some soul searching? I'm in need to do a little soul searching and want to go to the see the world. Where is the best destination to escape and reconnect with yourself after having your heart broken?
1. Tanzania and Zambia
In the bush in Africa--anywhere from Tanzania to Zambia . There's something about reorienting your life to the natural rhythms of the world around you--wake with the sun, sleep when the afternoon grows too hot, etc.--of remembering your very small place in a very vast and beautiful world, and of stripping life back to its very natural cycles--birth, mating, death--that really helps you to put life into perspective. It also always reawakens my sense of wonder and joy in the world. I never considered myself to be a nature-loving person, but one trip to Tanzania changed all that. And I can't stop going back.
Visit the Serengeti National Park, one of the top-rated tourist attractions in the world. Tanzania's oldest and most famous national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th worldwide wonder; the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: vast herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle. And after all this, you take some time and chill on the white sandy beach of Zanzibar.
Ngorongoro Park is a must in Tanzania. I think Zambia and a visit to Victoria Falls is one of the most amazing sights in Africa. If you go to the Vic Falls area, definitely do a canoe safari on the Zambezi river. Something that shouldn't be missed.
2. Tulum and Oaxaca
I would definitely add Mexico.. either Tulum or Oaxaca. The humble, kindness, and very hospitable feeling of the people are enough to make you feel loved and connected on a deeper level. Tulum and Oaxaca are very spiritual cities as they have spectacular ancient ruins... there are shamans who do help you work on connecting with your soul and healing pain, but they don't advertise themselves. I wish you the best.
The most soulful, meditative place I've ever been to is in Big Sur , California. It is a unique vista where sky, mountain, and ocean all merge at once. It engages all of your senses and wraps itself around you: the smell of ocean and air, the roar of wind and surf, the tingling feel of ocean spray on the skin, the faint taste of salt air, and the sight of nature's immense grandeur. One cannot spend a day sitting on the beach or rock and contemplating until the sun descends into the waters, and not come away from a different person. Good luck to you on your healing journey of mind, body, and spirit.
4. Ollantaytambo in Peru
I cannot explain it, but one of the most unusual places I have ever visited where you can spend time is Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley in Peru. It is near to Machu Picchu - which you can visit, but then there are lots of other Incan sites in the valley which are much more low key, and there are great day walks. The local people do not have much but are beautiful, it is relatively cheap to live, and so you can stay as long as you need, and there are a lot of other people there on spiritual journeys. If you want an extended stay, then you can volunteer there and have a part-time job. Surete (good luck).
The history of why it was built and the magnitude of the stones are incredible. I believe that there is the face of the white-bearded-god that is etched into the stone of the canyon. I wasn't there at the right time, but apparently, his crown illuminates on the equinox.
There is no question: India is the most transformative travel destination in the world. Seekers have been going to India since the dawn of time. "All life is there," as the quote goes. Travel in India personally changed my life, and I now write a travel blog about India, called Breathedreamgo. In it, you will find lots of advice and articles about staying in yoga ashrams. Rishikesh is the best place to start, but there are many places in India ideally suited for soul searching, including MysuruJaisalmerDharamsala and on and on. The entire country is an ashram, and some have called it the soul of the world. You will confront all life, yourself, the divine, and everything in between.
I also love India but worry that you might be so busy "dealing with it" that you don't have time for yourself. If you want a distraction, then it is undoubtedly the option. I loved it in Darjeeling/Sikkim in the highlands; there is something about pushing your body on high altitude mountain walking that clears the mind.
6. Antigua, Guatemala
You need a place where you can take your time, so a cheap destination is excellent. And don't forget to try and stay active physically if you are down mentally as this has been proven to be good for your mental state, and having been there myself, I totally agree with that. Should I pinpoint one place to go then, it would be Antigua Guatemala where you can quite easily chill for a few weeks without spending a lot of money and be in a very inspiring place at the same time.
7. Cape Town
My favorite place for soul searching is here in Cape Town and surrounds. The reason is that this part of the world captures all of the elements I mention above. In and around Cape Town, you will find Table Mountain National Park, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Just being near the mountain is a spiritual experience. Or you can walk in the Tokai Forest for peace and serenity. You could meditate in the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, or if you feel like some fun and hanging out with people, you could see the beautiful city or drink cocktails in Camps Bay. For a slower pace, you could head to the wine estates around Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Groot Constantia for a relaxing wine tasting, spa treatments, and the like. One of the most amazing things to do is horse riding on Melkbosstrandbeach or the perfect beach at Noordhoek. Up the west coast, you can go camping on the shell beaches of Tietiesbaai Rest Camp or Langebaan. Or you can camp in the fantastic Cederberg Wilderness Area. You will find nature, peace, beautiful people, and a relaxing atmosphere here.
- The Art of Living
- The OM Revolution
I would say Bali. It's very, very beautiful and quite cheap once you're there. You can have daily massages, walk on beautiful beaches, see lots of green rice paddies and eat delicious food. The people are friendly and helpful, and most guesthouses and hotels welcome solo travelers with open arms.
Bali is like a wonderland for soul searching! Whether it’s healers, meditation, yoga, retreats, cleanses, you name it, you can find it in Bali. One of the most exciting things you can do in Bali is a silent retreat. For the most, you’re just completely quiet—no talking to other guests at all. The idea is that you just concentrate on your surroundings (which are basically gorgeous rice fields), read, eat, and practice yoga. If you have a job or a life that requires endless meetings or being on the computer (when you stop talking, you also unplug), it’s a great way just to settle your mind.
Ubud may seem touristy on the outside but look deeper and stay just a little out of the main roads, and it's a totally different world. I love The Yoga Barn and have stayed at their guest house, which is simple but comfortable and quiet. My friends rave about Tegal Sari Accommodation, also walking distance from the Yoga Barn, but I could never get a reservation as it's always booked in advance. Depending on your budget, if you want to splurge, stay at Uma by COMO Ubud - it's lovely and right across local favorite food joint Naughty Nuri's Warung and Grill. Check out Uma's website for scheduled retreats. A little farther away is Bambu Indah, founded by jewelry designer John Hardy. The rates for the smaller villas are pretty reasonable; one of the villas is even built above a shrimp pond with a glass floor.
If you want a different view, there are many places in Europe, I would highly recommend Croatia , there are over 2000 islands off the coast, and any coastal city you go to is absolutely breathtaking. I found it to be much prettier than Italy.
I would add the island of Mljet to your list, arriving by ferry to the town of Polače. A large part of Mljet is a National Park, including the waters around. And within the National Park are the Malo Jezero, which are Small and Large Lake, which are beautiful. Within the lakes is an old monastery on an island, with little National Park boats that take you to the island to explore. There are many trails through the Park for hiking and bicycling, and bicycles are available to be rented in Polace. Due to the surrounding waters being part of the National Park, large scale fisheries are banned, and so the waters are full of seafood. A favorite restaurant of mine in Polace is Restaurant Ankora, where the Owner makes fresh black squid ink risotto that is excellent. There are other restaurants along the harbor front, where the seafood is kept alive to be the freshest in baskets sunk into the waters under their docks until ordered. And many of the restaurants here offer traditional Peka Cooking with hot wood ash under the Dalmatian Peka Bell.
Kauai is the most soulful place I know.
10 Best Soul-Searching Destinations in the USA
by Laura Clay updated February 15, 2023, 5:34 am
A proper setting is often needed to properly meditate, center yourself, and finally, do some soul searching. It is hard to do all of this in the middle of a busy city, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. As such, a trip is definitely in order, as one of the best ways to shift your perspective , relax and explore! To help you plan it, here are the 10 best soul-searching destinations in the USA.
1. Calistoga, California
The first on our list of best soul-searching destinations in the USA is Calistoga. What makes this special and one of the perfect places to travel is how idyllic it is. It is still a small city, a town, but it is so peaceful, and the lifestyle here seems so slow that it’s of no consequence.
Besides, it would be hard to enjoy the area’s natural hot springs without a slightly urban setting! In addition, the city is also rather well known for its wineries. You can enjoy a relaxing day of wine tasting, followed by a luxurious dip in warm water and a massage afterward. It will relax you, empty your mind, and allow you to do much-needed soul-searching.
2. Sedona, Arizona
If your ideal soul-searching destinations in the USA are the more secluded and lonely places, then you should consider making a trip to Sedona. Of course, not the town itself. While picturesque in its own right, the town is, in this case, to be only your springboard and base of operations for your forays into the nature surrounding it. The unique coloring of the local rock formations.
The stark natural beauty. And even the loneliness you can experience if you step foot onto some less popular hiking trails. They will all allow you to feel as one with nature and perfectly alone with your thoughts.
3. Florida Keys, Florida
Sometimes, a careful mix of soul-searching and good company is needed for the best effects. And Florida Keys, with its easy access to water activities and its relaxed atmosphere, provides a perfect setting for something like this. The perfect setting for some time alone is Little Palm Island, a nearby private island resort.
Or set out on a long boating trip in the wonderfully calm and clear water. You will fully appreciate the effects of meditation, which lets you keep a clear mind and boosts recovery. While also getting to soak in the presence of other tourists and soul searchers when the solitude of your mind gets a bit too much.
4. Lake Placid, New York
Following our theme of enjoying soul searching on water, we have Lake Placid, located in New York. If you feel an overwhelming urge to leave your city and just give yourself some time to recover , this is the ideal location. After all, its name is not just a bad joke! The crystal clarity and stillness of the Lake’s water make it seem like the world has stopped around you.
The nature walk available here will also let you take full advantage of the scenery and the refreshing crispness of mountain air. The best part once you’re done recharging? The local inns and spas will provide full access to massages that can melt stress out of your muscles all on their own!
5. Zion National Park, Utah
Forested trails, stunning waterfalls, energetic rivers, plateaus to conquer, and cliffs and canyons to navigate past; Zion National Park has it all and more. Of course, the physical toll of exploring too much is considerable.
That means you want to prepare well and take some equipment to take comfort breaks. One thing is sure: you will feel at peace with yourself and nature here, making the Park one of the best soul-searching destinations in the USA without question.
6. Boulder, Colorado
Boulder is the right place for those who want to work off their frustration and achieve the right state of mind for some soul-searching through hiking and physical exertion. The Eldorado Canyon State Park and Chautauqua Park alone provide perfect locations to lose yourself in nature and just walk for hours. And the city is excellent for relaxing at the end of your day!
7. Naples, Florida
If what you’re looking for in a soul-searching destination is warm water, some company, and plenty of activities that let your mind wander, then you should consider Naples. That is a small community in Florida and is considered one of the safest places to visit and live in the USA. As experts at Bright Futures Treatment Center like to point out, a feeling of safety is crucial for soul searching.
If it is meant to be part of a recovery process, few things will let you feel at peace and put a smile on your face as quickly as drifting off into calm waters. Or perhaps you should consider booking a dolphin cruise for some easy pick-me-up.
8. Page, Arizona
Where should we even start when discussing Page? Let’s do it by admitting that the town of Page itself is not the centerpiece this time. The town is full of greenery and is a rather picturesque place. However, it is surrounded by so many of nature’s wonders that any beauty and appeal is put firmly in second place.
The first such example is the Antelope Canyon. The stunning earth formations, the way light filters down into the canyon, and its almost alien atmosphere all are downright mesmerizing. You can, of course, take the time to explore and view the place at your leisure. Or, you can take a guided tour of the Navajo Nation, which is a splendid experience.
The second thing you must see here is the Horseshoe Bend. This stunning piece of geography, with its unusual look, unique composition of scenery, and sheer beauty, will have you snapping photos for a while before you’re happy with your results.
And these two are not even the only places worth visiting! There’s the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Tower Butte and the Vermilion Cliff National Monument. There are so many locations you can use Page to access easily, and it serves as a perfect base of operations!
9. Big Sur, California
If you are looking for one of the best soul-searching destinations in the USA which offers a slightly more guided experience, then Big Sur in California should be your choice. The location, all by itself, is starkly beautiful. Something about the clash of water and cliffs can put even the most restless of minds at rest. And then allow them to slip into a meditative state.
If that’s not enough to convince you to pack your luggage and head for Big Sur, then maybe the Esalen Institute there will. The Institute is in a lodge that offers mindfulness workshops and guided soul-seeking meditation. A perfect setting not only to get into meditation but to get actual, professional guidance on how to do it!
10. Bayfield, Wisconsin
The final of the best soul-searching destination in the USA we have to offer is Bayfield, Wisconsin. And this little city is unique on our list for one fact: it is just as worth visiting solely for the city as it is for the activities and locations you can find around it. So far, all the cities and towns on our list have served as the backdrops to the locations they let you access, but not so with Bayfield.
The city, stretched over rising hills and wreathed in nature, is a scenic experience. But what if you visit during autumn when the entire city is painted in the season’s colors? You will have an even more unique experience well worth the trip there! And, of course, the city’s location allows you to take full advantage of all its amenities for the duration of your stay.
If you do choose to step foot outside this beautiful city, however, there’s a lot you can choose to pursue. Water sports and sailing are chief activities that can put your mind to rest and let you do some soul-searching in peace, especially since the Apostle Islands are very close to the city! Alternatively, you can visit the orchards in the vicinity and maybe even get to partake in the harvest if you time your visit right.
Final comment
With our list of the 10 best soul-searching destinations in the USA, you will easily find one that appeals to you. If you pack correctly and anticipate what you’ll need to enjoy yourself fully, you will have an unforgettable experience visiting these places.

Solo Vacations: The 29 Best Places to Travel Alone in the U.S.
These destinations make traveling solo easy — and extra fun.
Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.
Stephanie Granada is a writer and editor focusing on travel, beauty, home, and health. Her bylines have appeared in Sunset , Outside , Southern Living , Woman's Day , Brit + Co. , National Geographic Traveler , and others.
Traveling alone is all about freedom and independence — freedom to go where you want, when you want, and independence in your ability to visit new places and meet new people without the crutch of a travel companion. It's not for everyone, but those willing to venture off on their own are rewarded with a compromise-free vacation and unforgettable experiences. Exciting things just seem to happen when you're traveling solo.
But where to go? If you're just testing the waters of solo travel, you might want to stay close to home, which is where these U.S. destinations come in handy. Whether you dream of a spa vacation with plenty of time to relax and reset, a trip packed with activities, or a soul-searching expedition, these U.S. destinations cater to the solo traveler, thanks to their ease of transportation and large selection of things to do.
Ready to book your next solo trip? Read on for the best places to travel alone in the U.S.
Naples, Florida
If you have your heart set on a beach vacation, consider Naples, a relatively small community in southwest Florida. There are plenty of ways a solo beach traveler can occupy themselves in Naples. You can check out the beach at Naples Pier, go kayaking in the mangroves , or hit the links at one of the area's 90+ golf courses. If you're looking for an activity that will leave a big grin on your face, book a dolphin watching cruise from Marco Island , just 30 minutes south of Naples. Plus, the city was ranked number one in a recent list of safest places to live the U.S. , thanks to its low crime rates.
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston may be a big city, but it can often feel like a small town. Thanks to its walkability, you'll be able to explore the city's historic center on foot and can take the T, the local subway system, across the Charles River to Cambridge. In Boston, you'll find a wellspring of history and culture in museums like the fun Boston Tea Party Museum and the impressive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , the site of one of the world's most famous art heists.
Boulder, Colorado
Those looking for quiet solo travel in the U.S. can spend their days exploring the mountains and hills surrounding Boulder. Eldorado Canyon State Park is just 20 minutes south of downtown, the approximately two-mile trail up Flagstaff Mountain is just 15 minutes to the west, and the iconic Flatirons (red sandstone formations) are less than 10 minutes away by car. And If you're feeling social, head to Pearl Street Mall , a bustling pedestrian-only street with some of the city's best restaurants, shops, and bars.
Portland, Oregon
Not everyone feels comfortable eating out at a restaurant alone, especially when traveling solo, but Portland makes mealtime a nonissue, thanks to its bustling food cart scene. There are many food cart parks scattered about the city where you can go and peruse a diverse offering of cuisine, from pizza to Senegalese, and enjoy your meal in a atmospheric and fun shared space. Food aside, Portland's reliable transportation, great parks, and community vibe make this city an easy choice for people traveling alone. Between the good meals, you can also enjoy the tranquility of the Japanese Garden or browse the shelves at the famous Powell's Books .
Asheville, North Carolina

If your perfect vacation includes hiking and biking during the day and gulping down beers with new friends at night, there's arguably no better place than Asheville, a city situated in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Bikers will want to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway , while hikers can head to the Craggy Pinnacle Trail (an approximately one-mile hike with serious views) or climb Mount Pisgah (2.6 miles round-trip). After a day in the mountains, reward yourself with a beer on the pup-friendly patio at Wicked Weed Brewing .
Sedona, Arizona
Traveling solo may be the only time you're able to truly check out from the grind and relax. That's why spa destinations like Sedona are so perfect for solo travelers. In addition to beautiful scenery, Sedona is packed with spas and wellness offerings. For a full resort experience, book a stay at the Amara Resort and Spa , or test out a few of the city's plentiful day spas: A Spa for You and Sedona's New Day Spa are long-standing favorites.
Charleston, South Carolina
Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure
Art lovers will find themselves in their element in this colorful coastal city in South Carolina. The small city of Charleston is home to over 35 fine art galleries and hosts an Art Walk on the first Friday of every month. If you're hoping to make some art yourself, the French Quarter is sure to inspire, while the city's warm southern hospitality will make you feel right at home. If the temperature is right, you can even take a trip out to Isle of Palms to enjoy some quality time on the beach.
Nashville, Tennessee
If your idea of a dream solo trip is getting out and meeting new people, book a ticket to Nashville and let the city of music connect you to others. The Basement , a live music venue known for its cozy vibes and spacious patio, is a must, as is 3rd and Lindsley . Just don't leave the city without trying the spicy fried chicken at Hattie B's . A trip to Nashville is also a chance to try out one of its best hotels like the classic Hermitage Hotel.
Portland, Maine
This may be the second Portland on the list, but this one has a coastal advantage. From the seaside city you can hop on a ferry or boat charter, or eat your way through the city's best lobster rolls at Luke's Lobster . When you're not out enjoying the water or stuffing your face with deliciously fresh seafood, you can meander in and out of the shops and boutiques at the historic Old Port.
San Francisco, California
When you're traveling solo, public transportation is key (no one wants to foot the bill for a weekend full of Uber rides). That's where cities like San Francisco shine. Between Muni buses, trains, streetcars, and cable cars, you can get to every corner of the city without hopping in a cab. Surrounded by beautiful bay views and offering easy access to experience a Redwood forest in Muir Woods , there are plenty of things to do in and around San Francisco.
Bayfield, Wisconsin
Located on the shores of Lake Superior, and home to quaint B&Bs and beautiful Victorian homes, Bayfield is a warm and welcoming coastal destination and one of the loveliest small towns in the U.S. Solo travelers can roam the intimate downtown or head to the nearby Apostle Islands National Lakeshore , best known for its series of caves that freeze during the winter months.
Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
Just off California's iconic Highway 1 is Carmel-by-the-Sea, a small beach city on the Monterey Peninsula that will capture your heart the moment you see it. Traveling solo is no problem here, as the city offers plenty to do — surfing, sea animals, and a village-style center that feels like it belongs in a storybook. However, solo travelers may feel most at ease exploring the many art galleries like the Carmel Art Association and Bennett Sculpture .
Boise, Idaho
Boise is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. Solo travelers will find riverside walking and biking trails that run right through town, skiing (in the winter) and hiking (in the summer) at the city's Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area , and easy access to mountain towns like McCall and ski areas like the rapidly growing Tamarack Resort .
Savannah, Georgia
Marje/ Getty Images
Savannah's welcoming nature makes solo travel a breeze. If you're feeling social, join a haunted pub crawl through town or book an architectural tour . And if you're looking for a quiet escape, rent a bike and explore the history-rich city on two wheels. The best time to visit Savannah is in the fall and winter, when the temperatures are cooler and you can embrace the spooky spirit during Halloween when the city goes all out with on-theme activities .
Hot Springs, Arkansas
As you might guess, Hot Springs, Arkansas, is known for its natural hot springs, which have drawn visitors since the early 1900s. For solo travelers, there's nothing like a serene soak in the natural thermal waters found on the historic Bathhouse Row, followed by a refreshing drink of spring water and a lazy hike through the dense woods at Hot Springs National Park . In addition to the gorgeous scenery of the park, you can also discover it's unique history as a wellness destination .
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole may be home to a world-renowned ski area , mouthwatering cuisine, and high-end galleries, but you'll still find Old West-style bars where cowboys throw back PBRs (check out the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar ). It's the perfect place to throw on a Stetson and dress the part for a night or two. The town itself offers plenty to do when you're not drinking or skiing, like rodeo nights at the Jackson Hole Rodeo and incredible pastries at the James Beard-recognized Persephone Bakery .
Seattle, Washington
Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure
If you want access to nature without sacrificing big-city amenities, Seattle offers an ideal balance. Spend a couple of days checking out Pike Place Market (don't miss a cup of mac n' cheese from Beecher's ), going to the top of the Space Needle , and visiting the Museum of Pop Culture before hopping aboard a ferry and getting away from it all. From the heart of Seattle, you can take a boat across Elliott Bay to Bainbridge Island and onto Olympic National Park , home to both glacier-capped mountains and 70 miles of wild coastline.
Minneapolis, Minnesota
It's been said that one can hardly be called an architect if they haven't designed something in Minneapolis — the city showcases work from Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, César Pelli, and Frank Gehry, among others. The city's love of design is also noticeable in the hotel scene, where sophistication meets Midwestern hospitality. So, while it's perfectly acceptable to wander through the city looking up, you don't want to miss a cruise on one of the famous bike paths, which wind past lakes that are perfect for a dip in the summertime.
Salt Lake City, Utah
It may be Utah's largest city, but Salt Lake City doesn't feel like a giant metropolis. Maybe it's the fact that it's surrounded by mountains or the open expanse of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park to the west. Either way, this friendly city has everything a solo traveler could want — great food (check out Feldman's Deli ), plenty of sun-drenched days, and easy access to both the mountains and water. Among the many things to do in town, you will also have your pick of exciting day trips to nearby state parks, or you can use the city as a launchpad to explore Utah's stunning geology at national parks like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon .
Fort Collins, Colorado
dlewis33/E+/Getty Images
If you're a beer lover, head to Fort Collins, a Colorado town with plenty of heart and really good beer. Start your tour of the city in the taproom of New Belgium Brewing (the company behind Fat Tire) and follow it with a pint at a few lesser-known breweries — we recommend Zwei Brewing Co. , Maxline Brewing , and Black Bottle Brewery . By the end of the day, you'll have your own beer-loving posse to explore the city with. Solo travelers will love the atmosphere of the downtown area, which is so charming it was the inspiration for Walt Disney when designing Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.
Austin, Texas
The quickest way to bond with a stranger? Shared musical taste. Austin has plenty of opportunities to bump into fellow music lovers. Stay on or near South Congress Avenue, where trendy properties like the Hotel Magdalena provide the ideal base for visiting the street's iconic venues. Other ‘hoods you can easily get to include East Austin, booming with hipster bars and food trucks; South Lamar with its great shops; and Rainey Street, beloved among college students. Visit March through November to see the bats flying under the Ann W. Richards bridge — it's one of the best things to do in Austin , as is indulging in the city's incredible food.
Islamorada, Florida
Of all the towns in the Florida Keys , Islamorada has the homiest feel. Locals are happy to regale you with tales of family squabbles and fishing exploits at any of the seaside watering holes. For an elevated dining experience, snag a barstool at Chef Michael’s and order the whole lionfish. It's a big but manageable dish, made from an invasive species that Floridians pride themselves on removing from local waters and serving as a tasty dinner instead. When you're done, rest your head at one of the cozy cottages at Moorings Village.
Louisville, Kentucky
Kentucky is known for its hospitality and Louisville for its bourbon , meaning solo travelers can find good friends and good drinks while exploring this Southern city. NuLu is the most happening neighborhood, but Old Louisville is the place to hunker down if you’re a sucker for history and architecture. Downtown offers new hotels and inventive restaurants, while Butchertown and Germantown pair up-and-coming bars and businesses with impressive vintage architecture.
Marfa, Texas
Artists in search of a solitary life have been drawn to Marfa for decades. Today, the population hovers just under 2,000, but there’s enough art, food, and quirk for a city many times that size. El Cosmico offers outstanding glamping and communal spaces, while art houses like the Chinati Foundation keep visitors entertained. Though it's more than three hours from the closest airport, this flatland village offers progressive galleries, mystifying desert skies, and a sparse beauty that makes it one of the best small towns in Texas .
New York, New York
New York City might be full of crowds, but it’s also a welcoming hub for parties of one. There are sleek hotels with bars that draw worldly travelers and locals, some of the best art and shopping in the world, and more food and drink options than you can fit into a month-long trip. If you need help deciding what to do on your visit, take a look at our three-day weekend guide .
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country — and solo travelers wanting to enjoy that security will find a great home base in Portsmouth. This waterfront town is one of the state's most pedestrian-friendly communities, and with a colonial heritage that dates back to the 1600s, it's fantastic for history buffs. Portsmouth knows its food, as is perhaps best showcased in the dozen oyster farms active offshore in the Great Bay. Sample their best bivalves at The Franklin, an upscale seafood joint run by James Beard-nominated chef Matt Louis.
San Diego, California
San Diego combines the laid-back vibes of SoCal with the multicultural energy of a city located right on the Mexican border. From mild weather and great surfing to vibrant West Coast sunsets, it has lots to offer, making it a great place to spend a few days. Opportunities for hiking and watersports abound, while coastal areas like La Jolla and Del Mar offer a bevy of chic hotels where a solo traveler can catch some oceanside R&R.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Solo travelers in search of spiritual healing should look no further than Santa Fe . Book a night at Ten Thousand Waves, an upscale lodge inspired by Japanese hot spring resorts and decked out with secluded soaking tubs. Downtown, you’ll find historical landmarks, handmade tchotchkes, and restaurants serving delectable Southwestern food. Beyond the adobe architecture and unique attractions, the best thing you can do in Santa Fe is meet its colorful characters.
Washington, D.C.
Museums are best explored alone, and in Washington, D.C. , you have more than 20 to choose from—many of which are free. The District also has a hot food scene, and as a solo diner, you'll have the best shot at getting into the most highly coveted spots. To get far away from D.C.’s political crowds, head to a hip residential neighborhood like Shaw, where you can imbibe at Maxwell Park Wine Bar or catch a show at the Howard Theatre.

Here, we break down 10 getaway destinations, from Thailand to Montreal, packed with activities for the solo traveler.
Glacier National Park, Montana
Glacier National Park spans more than one million acres with 745 miles of hiking trails weaving through verdant valleys and up soaring snow-capped mountains. Due to the native wildlife who call the park home, hikers are encouraged to wear jingling bells to ward off bears.
And while many glaciers in the park have begun rapidly melting, the park rangers have been working to educate visitors on climate change and how they can help. Whitefish , a neighboring small town, offers an ideal spot to retire after a long day of exploring the scenic lakes, valleys, and peaks of the park.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Known for its breathtaking ancient temples and traditional bazaars, this northern Thailand city has spent the last decade reinventing as an up-and-coming creative hub filled with contemporary art exhibitions and experimental restaurants.
For a taste of old Chiang Mai, spend an afternoon discovering the pavilions, fountains, and statues of Wat Umong, a 700-year-old Buddhist temple. Venture to the outskirts of the city to take in the exquisite pieces at the MAIIAM Museum of Contemporary Art before heading back to the center of town to enjoy delectable treats from street food vendors.
The Golden Circle, Iceland
Ranked as the safest country to visit on the Global Peace Index , Iceland is a nature lover's dream vacation, thanks to it's vast mountain valleys, colorful ice caverns , and surprising basalt columns.
Take a road trip across the Golden Circle, a scenic route that begins in Reykjavik and heads down to the southern uplands, to discover the country's most stunning natural attractions like the Goðafoss Waterfall (pictured) and Geysir geothermal area. Along the way, you'll hear all the old tales of Norse mythology from locals.
Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is a delight for design lovers looking to revel in the city’s historic architecture while celebrating its new modern additions. The National Azulejo Museum puts a spotlight on the intricate tiles— azulejos —decorating countless facades throughout the Portuguese capital.
A hilltop fortress , São Jorge Castle details the life of the Portuguese royal family and offers picturesque views of the city’s red rooftops and the Tagus River. Don’t forget to try Lisbon’s most famous treat, pasteis de nata, at Pastéis de Belém .
Taghazout, Morocco
The clay-baked fishing village of Taghazout has quickly earned a reputation as one of the top surf towns in the world. After morning prayers each day, fishermen in blue wooden boats head out to sea to collect fish to sell at the thriving markets while young surfers gather on shore before catching the waves.
This laid-back spirit can be seen in the stylish cafes and small shops offering Moroccan goods throughout the city. Helpful tip: Make sure to bring cash, as there are no ATMs within the small town.
Kigali, Rwanda
Touted as one of Africa’s most vibrant cities, Kigali has started to make its mark in the art world with its colorful street art and the Inema Arts Center . Self-taught painters Emmanuel Nkuranga and Innocent Nkurunziza founded the institution in 2012 as a way to expose the creative talents of undiscovered Rwandan artists and offer a place for them to innovative.
Beyond the arts scene, the city's cafe culture is one to be celebrated. Question Coffee , operated by 30,000 Rwandan women coffee farmers, delivers unique, rich blends while offering training programs for other entrepreneurial women to learn about the industry.
Montreal, Canada
History runs through the cobblestone streets and historic churches of this more-than-a-century old city. Though for a city of its age, Montreal bursts with exuberance and youthfulness in part thanks to a thriving arts and jazz scene. Each year, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal brings together the world’s most renowned musicians to celebrate the past and future of jazz.
You don’t have to wait for the festival to indulge in the smooth tunes; small bistros like Modavie and Bistro à Jojo give you a taste of the French influence on the city while listening to soulful acts.
Nicknamed the Lion City, Singapore mixes contemporary architecture with timeless traditions to create a city like no other in Asia. The extravagant glass greenhouses of Gardens of the Bay welcome guests to stroll across the sprawling conservatory known for its tulip and orchid exhibits.
Foodies will never go hungry with nearly 218 hawker centers serving up Michelin-rated meals for low prices. We also recommend stopping through the Katong area of the city where candy-colored houses retell the history of the Peranakan people.
Boulder, Colorado
For those adventure-seekers always looking for a new mountain to climb, Boulder is calling your name. The Colorado city with small-town vibes boasts dozens of trails running through its center and into the Flatirons for visitors to hike and take in the scenery.
After those long hikes, craft breweries and cocktail bars like Finkel & Garf , The Bitter Bar , and Wild Woods Brewery beckon visitors to relax and sip on an innovative beverage. Instead of staying downtown, look into possibly renting a rustic cottage in the middle of Chautauqua Park with impeccable views of the city’s famous rock formations.
Berlin, Germany
Charmingly rough around the edges, Berlin has long moved past its identity as a divided city to become a melting pot of culture, art, and history. It’s said the best way to take in the sights of Germany’s capital is by bike, so make sure to rent yourself one to see the city’s incredible offerings such as the East Side Gallery, a series of murals painted on the remnants of the Berlin Wall.
Small food stalls throughout offer the city’s well-known dish, doner kebabs, but be on the lookout for popular vegan and vegetarian restaurants like Cookies Cream and Valladares Feinkost that are making a big splash on the Berlin food scene. And no trip to Berlin would be complete without seeing the sunset through the arches of the Brandenburg Gate.

Soul Searching: What It Means and 35 Signs & Secrets to Find Your Calling
If you’re feeling lost in life and don’t know what to do, then it’s time to do some soul-searching. if you want to know how to do it, here’s your guide..
Everyone tells you to do what makes you happy, but that’s easier said than done. What honestly makes you happy? It’s a tough question to answer because most of us have no idea. Which is why we need to know how to soul-search.
Okay, sure, we have things in our lives that make us happy, but most of the time, they’re not things we picture ourselves doing more seriously. On the other hand, maybe we could imagine ourselves doing our hobbies as a career.
However, we’re not sure how to get it to that level. It’s not easy to figure these things out, especially when you must support yourself in your daily life at the same time. [Read: How to turn around the negativity and find the silver lining ]
What is soul-searching?
Soul-searching is a process that a person goes through when they examine their own life, motives, and values. However, it can mean different things to different people.
For some people, soul-searching means finding their authentic selves, improving themselves, or getting their life together. Essentially, it means when a person goes deep within themselves to find answers about their life purpose.
This involves analyzing their life, emotions, decisions, and actions before taking any more steps in life. [Read: What is my purpose in life? 33 secrets to find meaning when you feel lost ]
It could all start with a simple question such as, “Is this the career I really want?” or “Is this where I really want to live?” Then, the self-reflection continues and the person digs deeper into themselves.
Once the person discovers the answers to all their questions, they emerge as a new person. So, soul-searching is a decision to take a step back from life and pay attention to yourself with the goal of living a happy and fulfilling life.
The purpose of soul-searching
When people feel like their life is out of sync, they’re in a rut or they have negative feelings about their life, that’s when they usually engage in soul-searching. [Read: 30 secrets to start over a new life and leave your past for a new adventure ]
For example, if you feel unmotivated in your career or feel like your relationship isn’t working like you’d like it to, then it’s time to do some soul-searching.
So, essentially, the purpose of soul-searching is to change your life for the better.
And one of the only ways to change your life for the better is to take a long, hard look at yourself and your life. [Read: 48 real secrets to change your life and find the right path when you’re lost ]
That’s because knowing your core values and passions makes your life easier and happier overall.
What it means to “lose your soul” and why it happens
One of the reasons people might start to do some soul-searching is if they suffer a major loss or experience overwhelming negative emotions.
Most people these days are conditioned to live by their ego and ignore their souls completely. When they do this, a lot of negative qualities can emerge such as greed, jealousy, and fear. [Read: Free spirit – what it means and 40 sins and ways to enjoy the flow of life ]
So, experiencing “losing your soul” is like losing part of your living essence. It hides or suppresses our true nature and life potential.
A soul loss can occur because of experiences like this:
1. Childhood trauma
2. Substance abuse
4. Depression
5. Mental illness
6. Adult trauma
7. Overuse of social media, video games, or other technologies
8. Losing a loved one
9. Materialism and greed
10. Addictions of any kind
When one or more of these things are experienced in life, then a person can lose parts of themselves – hence, a soul loss. These people usually feel lost in their personal and professional lives. [Read: Life’s a bitch – why it feels that way and 18 feel-good ways to feel and live better ]
Signs you need to do some soul-searching
Now that you know what soul-searching is and what “losing your soul” means, you might be wondering if you should do some searching yourself. Here are a couple of indications that you should.
1. You’re constantly questioning your path and dreaming about alternative ones
If you aren’t very satisfied with various parts of your life *or all of them*, then you should do some soul-searching. Life is meant to be happy and enjoyed. So, if you’re questioning whether or not your life is on the right track, then it’s probably not.
2. Feelings of being stuck
Maybe you feel like you’re stuck in a rut or have a dead-end job or relationship. If you have this overwhelming feeling of your life going nowhere, then it is definitely time to do some soul-searching.
You can’t make any positive changes without it. [Read: Feeling stuck in life? How to change direction and live your dream ]
How do you heal your soul?
Healing your soul starts with a decision to do it. Without that determination and drive, then it won’t happen. It all starts with commitment.
In order to have a deep, true, and lasting healing of your soul and mind requires honoring yourself as a person – both your human and spiritual side.
If you’re feeling sad, depressed, anxious, or angry, then realize that these messages have powerful messages for you. Pay attention to them, and then they can help guide you toward your ultimate destiny. [Read: 34 secrets to stop being lazy, find the reasons WHY, and overcome the excuses ]
Remember, what you focus on expands and persists in your life. It’s important to honor how you feel, go within yourself, do the healing, and allow yourself to expand into a new cycle of personal and spiritual growth.

How to soul-search and look within
So, with all this said, it’s time to do some soul-searching. Whether you waver on what you want to do, or you’re completely lost, looking within usually is the best way to see what you really need. [Read: 28 self-improvement secrets to improve yourself and transform into your best self ]
But soul-searching doesn’t mean you join a yoga retreat or only eat soya beans.
Soul-searching can be done in a variety of ways and flow into your lifestyle. But of course, you need to know the ways to do it. It’s not all kumbaya.
1. It’s not going to happen overnight
We all want things now, now, now. Well, sorry to tell you, but it ain’t going to happen like that. If you want to truly work on finding yourself and what fulfills you, it’s going to take time. [Read: 21 ways to find your inner happiness ]
For some, it takes weeks or months, while for others years. There’s no equation for this or a simple answer. Soul-searching takes work and patience.
2. Ask yourself questions
You need to find out more about yourself. So, ask yourself questions. The only way to soul-search is to look within. You need to look at what interests you, what interested you as a child, and what you need in your life.
Usually, the things that fulfill your life, you already do but you don’t realize it. Though it’s not always going to be black and white, there may be a couple of things you love, so maybe you can mash them up together. [Read: Life questions to help you visualize your future ]
3. What are your natural talents?
Ask your family and friends this question as you see yourself much differently than the people around you. You may be surprised at some of the qualities they’ll tell you that you have.
Ask them what they come to you for, maybe you’re good at giving advice or making them laugh.
4. Find the sweet spot
This means you want to look at two and three again, seeing if there’s something that compiles everything. This is called the sweet spot. It’s the best of both worlds. [Read: Feeling worthless? 28 causes, signs, and daily habits to change your mind and life ]
In order to find this, look at the intersection of the areas. Maybe you like films, drawing, what about animation? See? Find the sweet spot where your talents and wishes meet up.
5. Don’t focus too much on it
Of course, you want to find out what fulfills you, but don’t spend every day and night focused on it. If you look too deeply into it all the time, you’re going to exhaust yourself and completely turn yourself off from the idea.
Take breaks, reflect on what you’ve accomplished thus far, and then continue. There’s no time limit to this. [Read: 52 happy habits and ways to find happiness within yourself and feel better ]
6. Ditch the things that don’t make you happy
Learning how to soul-search can be a challenge if you’re surrounded by things that don’t provide joy. So, ditch the things around you that aren’t serving you.
Whether it’s relationships or activities, whatever it is, skip it. Part of finding yourself is removing the things from your life that no longer serve you. [Read: Stop pleasing people and feel awesome instead ]
7. Don’t think about making huge goals
Though goals help us achieve great things, if too big, they create stress, causing us to lose motivation. Keep the goals small.
So, if you have a list of things you want to try, do one at a time and see which activity brings you joy. Don’t make these unachievable goals. It’s not going to happen like that.
8. Work on inspiring yourself
If you’re unsure where to start, begin by watching a movie or reading a book. You don’t have to bungee jump or do anything extreme. [Read: Simple ways to inspire the people around you ]
All you need to do is surround yourself with things that expand your thoughts. Right now, you’re stuck in this small circle of thoughts. Expand your mind, and you’ll experience new and refreshing things.
9. You may not always be right
There may be some things that you’re going to do that at one point you thought were right. But now, you realize that they’re not.
This doesn’t mean you’re a failure, it just means you’ve learned from your mistakes. Acknowledge, accept, and forgive yourself. If you’re stuck on something, you won’t be able to develop yourself. [Read: How to stop feeling sorry for yourself ]
10. Don’t think about your age
It’s easy for us to prevent ourselves from trying something new because of our age. So, what if you’re 26 or 56 or 86?
If you want to try something new that you think will give you happiness, do it. Don’t let your age hinder your ability to make yourself happy. That’s a lame excuse and you know it.
11. Start it as a hobby
You don’t have to do something full force right away. Instead, start out as a hobby and see how it goes. You don’t want to put so much pressure on yourself, but rather let it flow into your life. [Read: How to respect yourself – 37 secrets of self-respect, self-belief, and self-love ]
If you think that your soul’s desires are met by this, activity think about expanding it into something you do full-time. But until then, just enjoy it.
12. Look back at your childhood
Many things that we loved to do during our childhood were activities that lightened and heightened our souls. However, through age, peer pressure, or our parents telling us what we need to do, those joys were pushed to the side.
Try those activities again and see where they go. You haven’t changed that much from your childhood, not as much as you think. [Read: Steps to unfake your life and be yourself ]
13. Don’t give up
You’ll want to give up multiple times throughout the experience. Why? Because you’re going to face some personal truths and obstacles that you probably avoid.
Soul-searching requires not quitting, especially when it’s not easy. You need to power through. [Read: Who are you? How to fine-tune your internal compass ]
14. Take inventory
You should reflect on what’s working and not working in your life. This might seem like an easy thing to do, but some people just aren’t very aware of the details of their life. They just go through the motions without a lot of deep thought.
In order to do this, you might want to write it all down. Sure, going over it in your head helps, but putting things on paper allows you to see everything more objectively.
15. Ask for guidance
If you are a spiritual or religious person, then you can ask for guidance from the spiritual power you believe in. It could be God, Buddha, the Universe, or guardian angels. [Read: Old soul – what it is & 39 traits and signs you’re wise beyond your years ]
Many people have been helped in their life by asking for guidance from their higher power. So, this is a great way to gain some clarity in your life.
16. Spend time alone with your thoughts
We live in such a busy and noisy society. There are too many daily distractions such as social media, TV, video games, work, and everything else under the sun.
So, you should make a conscious effort to slow your life down so you can actually hear and monitor your own thoughts. Write them down so you can keep track of them and eventually reflect on them. [Read: 25 honest, self-reflection questions to recognize the real YOU inside ]
17. Make time for reflection
Spending time with your thoughts is part of the reflection process. But if your life is so busy and you don’t make time for it, then it will get you nowhere.
Schedule the reflection time if you have to. In other words, actually put it in your calendar or set an alarm to remind yourself to do it. You can’t do soul-searching without self-reflection.
18. Enlist support
You don’t have to do this all by yourself. In fact, it helps when you have a friend or loved one helping you along the way. They can encourage you and help you with self-reflection. [Read: True friendship – 37 real friend traits and what it takes to be a good one ]
Even better, if your friend wants to do some soul-searching along with you, then you can do it together. It helps to have a buddy and someone in your life to hold you accountable.
19. Explore holistic healing principles
Most medical treatments are rooted in allopathic approaches, such as surgery and pills. While this is appropriate sometimes, it’s also important to explore other alternatives.
So, try researching holistic healing principles too. Many people are big advocates of non-mainstream healing modalities, and you should try some yourself.
20. Tap into your intuition
Everyone is born with intuition, but our world tends to teach us to ignore it. We grow to believe that it’s not accurate and that our logic is more reliable. [Read: Gut instinct – what it is, how it works, and 30 tips to follow and listen to your gut ]
However, your gut instinct is rarely wrong. So, be brave and follow it. It’s there for a reason, and it’s the perfect tool for soul-searching.
21. Build meaningful relationships
No one is meant to walk through life alone. So, not only is it important to have relationships in your life, it’s more important to have meaningful ones.
Too many people are in toxic or unhealthy relationships. But part of soul-searching is cutting those people out and surrounding yourself with positive, uplifting, and loving people instead. [Read: 26 whys and ways to surround yourself with positive people and remodel your life ]

Find your next level on an epic wilderness adventure
“mind knows the questions, soul knows the answers”.
When the trip was over, the breakthroughs were ingrained in me. Unlike a seminar or self-help book, I don’t need to go back and flip through notes and do a bunch of extra stuff.
-William Albritton (COO Infenergy Solar)
This really has changed me as a husband, father, friend, and individual. I would recommend Soul Searching Adventures 12 out of 10 times for anyone seeking clarity and direction in their life. Words can’t describe how amazing this trip was. The amount of gratitude I felt for life at the end was unlike anything I ever experienced.
-Tom Hopkins (PM at Microsoft)
Soul Searching Adventures was by far one of the most powerful experiences I’ve ever had. Michael held a powerful space for me to discover an aspect of myself I never knew was there. I am forever grateful.

2023 Adventures
June 13-27 amazon river, bolivia (invite only), sept 4-10 boundary waters, mn (sold out), 2024 adventures, march 25-31 escalante, ut, august 12-18 wind rivers, wy, guys come to me all the time….
At first, they pretend they love their job, but they just need to work fewer hours. When I dig in, they admit that they aren’t happy in their career. They wish they were doing something that fired them up. Something with meaning. Something that would allow them to really help people, while doing what they’re best at.
At first, I’ll ask them how their relationship is going and they’ll say, “Oh it’s great, I love my wife.” When I dig in, they admit how much they’ve been taking their partner for granted, or that they’re unsatisfied sexually, or even that they have thought about divorce. They crave a partnership defined by radical honesty and intimacy, a passionate sex life, and mutual support for each other’s passions and pursuits.
Privately, they’re anxious and unsure about the future. I meet guys who wish they were on a more creative path in life, who wish they had created some sort of art or music, and who miss the types of friendships they had in high school when there was always someone to do stuff with. If you can relate to any of those, you’re not alone. I’ve personally experienced almost all of the above.
These trips are life-changing, every time. I’ve been on multiple, and I intend to do many more. Michael is a master facilitator, a man of integrity, and he’s a generally DOPE dude.
– Jordan Bowditch (men’s coach and CFO of Sex and Love Co)
Michael has put together a powerful, fun, challenging adventure for men who are ready to go to the next level in their life. Whatever expectations you have around what this experience will be like, it will exceed those in ways you can’t comprehend yet. This was an experience I’ll never forget
Austin Brawner (founder Brand Growth Experts)
I’ve never had an experience as transformative as this one. My Soul Searching Adventure provided me the clarity and understanding I needed to address the biggest problems in my life. I’m a better person by going on this trip.
– Ryan Summers (VP Operations at Active Life RX)
What if your life was different?
Imagine you wake up on Monday morning, and your first thought is, “Fuck I love my life.”
You roll over and see your girl’s booty peeking out of the sheets. Aroused, you wake her up and have some quick, but passionate morning sex.
Some of your closest friends join you for a workout. You crush it and follow it up with a quick sauna sesh where you catch up with your buddies.
You wake your kids up, and you genuinely feel that there is nothing you’d rather be doing than being with them getting ready for school. You walk into your son’s room and it turns out that someone left his dresser unlocked, so he took out a tube of buttpaste and rubbed it all over his face, arms, the carpet and the walls.
But you’re unfazed (well, almost) because you’re a borderline emotional jedi now and don’t resist reality.
Once they’re off to school you sit down to do the work you were born to do. You know exactly what you need to work on today, and you get right to it. You do some creative work for a couple of hours and then take a break to go and flirt with your wife for a few minutes.
In general you are more effective in everything you do. You’re thoughtful and generous. When something needs to be said, YOU are the one to say it. When something needs to be done, YOU are the one to do it. As a result, people look to you as the leader. Your relationships deepen. You feel a greater sense of purpose in your life immediately. You start pushing your edges in areas of your life that you used to stuff in a closet. You feel alive. You become funnier because you’re just a freer version of yourself. People want to be around you more, because they like who they become in your presence.
6 months ago, you were reading blogs and listening to podcasts on how to solve your problems and get unstuck. Today, you’re on fire because you’re pushing your edges in every area of life that matters to you. You’re intentional and courageous in everything you do.
While other people sit on the sidelines waiting for their dream job, dream relationship, and dream life to simply appear, a small group of people have decided to live different lives. Lives that deeply fulfill and excite them. They’re at peace, yet passionately working on things that matter to them. They feel whole and have an insatiable desire to give their gifts to the world.
I know because I’m one of them. And I know dozens of guys who’ve been on trips with me and are living this life.
A few things my ego wants you to know/things marketers say I should put at this point in this page.
- I’m a 2x CF Games Team Champion (2012 and 2013)
- I co-founded and sold an online fitness company called Brute Strength
- I started the Brute Strength Podcast (later Michael Caz Podcast), which had millions of downloads and was the #4 ranked podcast of the entire Health category at one point
- My wife and I built and sold a nutrition coaching company called Working Against Gravity, which she founded.
- I have a relationship that I (and my wife) genuinely rate a 10/10, including having bomb sex (most of the time) 8 years and two kids in.
- I’ve spent thousands of hours in my own individual and group therapy sessions, and AA meetings since I was 15.
- I studied psychology in college and have obsessively studied psychology, spirituality, and personal development content for over a decade.
- I’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on life coaches, relationship coaches, and business coaches and have been mentored by some of the best in the world.
I should be in jail or dead
Despite growing up in an all-American family, I managed to get addicted to drugs as a teenager. What started as a way to fit in with the cool kids quickly became the only way I knew how to get through life. I became depressed, anxious, and lonely. I coped with all of that by using harder and harder drugs more often. I became a thief. A cheater. A liar. The type of guy who I’d chase out of the house if my daughter brought him home (which actually happened to me).
Shortly after I started using needles, my parents shipped me off to a wilderness treatment program in the Utah desert, and it changed my life. That was 15 years ago.
Now I want to share what I’ve learned with you related to building better relationships, living with more purpose and generally loving your life more. I’ll introduce you to some of the same experiences and practices that have helped me and hundreds of others.
This trip was extremely therapeutic. Connecting with the other men was effortless as each person selected to be on the trip was top notch. This is the lightest I’ve felt in many years.
– Doug Larson (co-founder Barbell Shrugged)
This trip will NOT solve your problems
I can’t stand it when people tell you that if you just buy their course, their book, their product, or their trip, then not only will your problem be solved, but it will be solved forever. It’s true that almost without exception, the men who come on Soul Searching Adventures have huge breakthroughs and epiphanies. Some leave feeling like a completely different person. But it’s also true that to maintain the benefits of this trip, or any other transformational experience, you have to do two things:
- You have to maintain practices & habits that help you think and feel your best.
- You have to change your environment (which mostly means the people in your life, but sometimes the physical environment as well). We imitate the people around us. You have to either (a) enroll the people in your life into treating you as you are and not who you used to be, or (b) find new people who challenge you and support the new version of you. I can’t be there to hold your hand to make sure you do this (with the exception of those that hire me for 1:1 coaching).
I will teach you how I’ve done these things in my own life, I will tee you up for doing this in what I call “Pillar Night,” and the rest will be up to you. You’ll have to take radical responsibility for continuing to do your work. So if you think that going on this adventure will solve all your problems—don’t. Besides, you don’t need it to solve all your problems, because YOU are the guru you’ve been searching for. You just have to awaken that part of yourself and learn to live as him consistently.
The safe container, beauty of nature, and feeling of connection with like-minded souls helped break down my own walls & barriers while gaining strength to be the true me, unapologetically , with confidence! I will be forever grateful for Soul Searching Adventures.
-Trent Longhurst
Michael’s approach to leading this trip is unlike any other journey I have been on. It is up to the individual to find answers within themselves, but Michael arms you with the right tools and resources to dig deep within yourself. Michael attracts a great group of individuals and by the end of the trip you feel as if you have a new family.
– Sam Edwards (co-founder Send to Win)
What an incredible experience. Major life changing experiences await those who embark on this truly soul searching adventure.
– Jarom Smith (clothing designer and founder of Undead Threads)

This trip is a no brainer. It’ll be one of the most impactful things you ever do.
If youre ready and truly feel called to this experience, it can change your life.
What type of men go on these trips.
Typically, high-performing men who are unsatisfied with one or more areas of their lives. The people I select to come on the trips have some of the following qualities.
I sense that they can help me maintain a safe container for every person in the group to open up
They have a wide range of experience in the personal growth space, but what’s important to me is open-mindedness to a new experience, both within themselves and externally.
I believe they can add value to the other members of the group in some way
What do I have to bring to the trip?
I will give you a full gear list when you sign up, but here are some of the bigger items you will need to bring:
- Tent (you can share with someone else)
- Sleeping bag and pad
- Clothes to be prepared for the cold and the heat
Where do we meet for the trip?
We will meet at the airport nearest our starting location, and we will shuttle together from there
“I am new to this type of work and have trouble expressing myself to other men.”
That is absolutely fine. The only thing I expect of you on the trip is that you push YOUR edge. That will be different for every man. I won’t push you past what I think you’re capable of, but don’t sign up for this trip if you’re still trying to “play it safe.”
“I've been doing this type of work for 20 years. What’s different about this experience?”
I’ve worked with a lot of very experienced guys, and here’s what they say is different about this experience.
1. It helps them unlock new insights and epiphanies when they’re immersed in the wilderness, completely disconnected, while physically pushing themselves intensely. These trips are the hardest physical thing many men have done. Regardless of exactly how hard it is for you, this level of physical exertion breaks down the ego’s defenses and makes space for buried memories and new thoughts to arise.
2. It helps to have a masterful guide (their words, not mine) to go deeper into their past and present experience and at times give direct, pointed feedback.
What if I’ve never been camping or done anything like this physically?
I’ll let Sean, a guy from downtown LA that had never even been glamping before this trip answer this one: “ Before this trip, I had only camped once in my life (I’m 34) and it was of the “park next to your tent” variety, and I considered myself to be very much an urban dweller. By the end of this adventure, I was more comfortable in nature than I’d ever been: I could put a tent together, sleep comfortably in said tent, read a topographical map, use a Jet Boil for food, and efficiently use my hiking poles (just to name a few). In addition to my newfound comfortability in nature. I would not have taken this trip if it weren’t for Michael. And as a “city boy” who had never been backpacking or camping before, the fact that I was able to not only able to complete this trip, but have a lot of fun in the process, should show anyone else how valuable this experience is regardless of backpacking/camping experience and comfortability in nature. "There's something about the escape," Eliza Coolsma told The Points Guy in a recent interview. The Dutch yoga, ayurvedic and bodywork instructor who organizes hiking, yoga and healing retreats around Europe added, " Visiting a new place [puts] you in a different mindset, opening you up to new ideas or ways of healing that you may not have been open to before."
Coolsma attributes this change in attitude to the luxury of time that travelers often have on vacation — as well as the way travel takes you out of your comfort zone.
"When you take away your daily routines and stressors, you have no choice but to open yourself up to the culture and nature that surrounds you. Being able to have time away to reflect, stabilize your body rhythm and live in the moment creates a spontaneity and openness you simply don't have at home. Travel expands your perspective, so it's not surprising that people are also more emotionally, spiritually and physically ready for experiences that may not have considered at home."
In the same way that visiting a new place can help you face your fears , engaging in some form of spiritual healing can suddenly seem more appealing to travelers too.
For many people, identifying with a destination and its people is also easier after they've forged a deeper spiritual connection Most birthright trips to Israel, for example, include a stop at Tzfat. It's one of the most sacred cities in the country and the birthplace of Kabbalah. It can help visitors understand the complex history and holiness of the nation.
Trips to India and other destinations across the Asian continent routinely include meditative stays at an ashram. And of course travelers often take solo trips and join organized retreats to do a little soul searching, personal healing or reflecting.
This rang true for TPG's creative director, Isabelle Raphael, who found herself wanting to learn more about the Mayan culture during a visit to Lake Atitlán, Guatemala — an area where the Mayan people have lived for more than 5,000 years. She participated in a fire ceremony led by a Mayan priest, a sacred tradition that calls upon the Mayan calendar and the energies of the four cardinal (compass) points. At her feet, an altar of candles burned on a Mayan cross drawn in sugar.
Raphael's guide, Alvaro Samuel Botán, instructed her to focus. "The fire is what opens the connection to the spirits — to the universe," Botán explained. Depending on the day of the Mayan Calendar, the direction of the wind and the desire of the participant, a Mayan fire ceremony can be used to purify, to heal or to find purpose.
"I [felt] like some sort of stagnant energy was released when I threw my candles in the fire," Raphael said after returning to New York.
For TPG contributor Jordi Lippe-McGraw, it was during a trip to Machu Picchu that she decided to seek out a shaman.
"I was a little hesitant, actually," Lippe-McGraw told TPG. "I thought maybe it would be hokey and touristy and I really wanted it to be an authentic experience." She and her husband had learned only a few days before their trip that his grandmother had passed away. "We were in a different mindset," she added.
"When (the shaman) realized we might be more open than other people to this experience, he took us off the beaten path and was able to find this quiet corner and perform a Pachamama, or Mother Earth ceremony," Lippe-McGraw said. "He knew that my husband's grandmother had died, and he talked a lot about … where the line is drawn between the earth and heaven."
"We held stones and buried things in the dirt, closed our eyes and he smudged us — all the things you would [expect] from a shaman. But the best part actually was at the end, at this overlook. He told us to sit there for as long as we wanted, in silence, and that was the most powerful part. You know all this stuff is happening, there are tourists everywhere, but to find calm in this chaos is so beautiful. That was really the best part of it. How often do you take time to just sit?"
Megan Fox , who works in education and with nonprofits, said her pursuit of "immersive situations" and "cultural experiences" has always been part of her larger, personal exploration of religion.
"I have always been religious and believe that experiencing other faiths and cultures is a way to grow in our spirituality and better understand religion …" Fox told TPG in an email.
Fox participated in temple-stay programs in South Korea and described the lifestyle as "extremely simple."
"You wear natural-colored, loose-fit cotton clothing, eat a vegan diet and sleep on a mat on the floor. During the day, you spend most of your time in meditation."
Participants also spent an entire hour bowing in repetition. "Each time you would bow," Fox said, "we would string a wooden bead onto a string. At the end of the experience, we had a visual reflection of the time we spent performing this ritual."
Though Fox didn't feel compelled to join the Buddhist faith after her temple stay, she did feel as though it had helped her understand Buddhist culture and gave her time for personal reflection.
Sometimes it's more about simply trying something new. TPG contributor Lori Zaino participated in a sound bath during a yoga retreat in Thailand a few years ago. "Everyone was talking about [the workshop]," Zaino said during a phone call. "You basically go in and set up a makeshift bed, getting as comfortable as you can [in] a room filled with crystal bowls, six gongs, all these meditation bowls and new age instruments … I was immediately skeptical."
But Zaino decided to commit her Saturday night to the experience. "Two people played the instruments and you let the sound wash over you." It is supposed to help you tune frequencies in the body and can have healing benefits. The sounds created by the gongs and bowls can "touch frequencies you can't access in other ways," she added.
During the sound bath, Zaino recalled having "different emotions."
"They called it a trance," she said. "I thought I fell asleep."
Though Zaino didn't feel any immediate effects from the sound bath, she said in the days that followed, she felt noticeably lighter. "I didn't go in with any serious issues … but I felt a lot lighter and calmer [after] and it. The experience gave me a sense of peace and calmness I didn't have before. I was able to make decisions with a firmer stride."
Since then, Zaino has specifically sought out sound therapy experiences when she travels. "I think there's something about being on vacation — I don't think I would have done this at home. But when you're in a space that's already affected . . . and you're in an atmosphere that's really respectful of this lifestyle, it's a lot easier to go in with a positive outlook or without cynicism. It's a lot easier to try something new."
Of course, soul searching may not fit into your standard beach vacation itinerary. But when you find yourself in a destination where spiritual practices are ingrained in the culture, it can be a meaningful way to connect with a place — and maybe even find yourself deeply rewarded by the experience.
And if these particular rituals (shamans, sound baths, healing ceremonies) may not be right for you, there are incredible ways to commune with nature, a higher power or yourself while traveling all over the world. Just keep an open mind and you might be surprised what comes your way.
Here’s Exactly How to Start Your Soul Searching Journey
It all begins by taking a few minutes for yourself.

Soul searching—or the idea of nourishing your soul—is an important exercise every person can and should partake in. Simply put, it’s the desire to look more deeply for meaning in your life, says Kelley Kitely, LCSW, a Chicago social worker and best-selling author of MY self: An Autobiography of Survival . “Most people engage in soul searching (or should) when life seems out of sync, or when they're in a rut, experiencing negative feelings towards their careers or relationships" she explains. But if you don’t know where to start—or exactly what to do—try following these expert-recommended tips to nourish your soul and find that deeper meaning in your everyday existence.
Spend some time alone.
“Taking a moment to put yourself first is not selfish—it actually allows you to replenish and be present in the moment for others,” says LaQuista Erinna, LCSW, a New Jersey social worker.
Try touring a local attraction, going for a stroll in the park, or sitting down with your journal to really give yourself some "me" time to recognize what you're missing.
Then, connect with new people.
“Strike up a conversation with someone in line at the grocery store, say hello to the cashier, or warmly smile at a stranger,” suggests Erinna. “While technology and social media have connected us to family, friends, and celebrities, we still crave that human connection.
"Being kind or friendly to a stranger will make you feel good inside,” and help you get back in sync with yourself by seeing yourself reflected through someone else's yes.
But, disconnect with social media.
Equally important to the soul-nourishing equation is to spend time away from your besties—at least digitally speaking. “Be present in the here and now: ignore social media, log out of your apps, and turn off your notifications for at least an hour a day,” advises Dominic Gaziano, MD, a Chicago-based internist. We know you've heard this one before, but it can't be overstated how helpful this step can be.
Partake in a spiritual practice.
Keep in mind that the word "spiritual" is not necessarily equated with any kind of religious practice, but rather one that’s from within. Dr. Nancy Mramor, a Pittsburgh psychotherapist, recommends taking up meditation in your soul-searching journey. “It changes the brain, nervous system and mood,” she says. Try one of these expert-picked meditation apps to get started with just a few minutes of inwards reflection a day.
Try a new hobby.
Maybe meditation falls into this one, but it could be anything really—try your hand at painting, writing, or even just power walking. “Do what brings you joy—creative endeavors particularly encouraged,” says Dr. Mramor. “Any activity that puts you in the state of "flow," where you lose track of time and space and get lost in your bliss will nourish you.”
Kitely agrees. “Trying out a new hobby helps us to get outside our comfort zone which awakens new skill and growth—creative outlets can ignite us even if we don’t necessarily think we’re good at the activity."

We all have problems, and more often than not, the simplest thing to do is to pack up and run away. Many of us stop ourselves from doing just that because real life menacingly stands in the way. Despite all of that, you have to understand that only when you heal yourself and find your way will you be able to positively impact the lives of those around you.
Whether you have been scarred by a personal tragedy like the death of a loved one, an illness, or simply a heart-wrenching break up, there is no shame in admitting that time off from reality is what you need to heal yourself. You must understand that your life might never fall into place as easily as it does for others.
Sometimes, you have to work at it to finally discover the meaning of why you are here. Look at it as a privilege and not as a burden. Not many people can say that they were gifted with the rare chance to figure out for themselves just what they were made to do.
Soul searching destinations to visit
Here are the most recommended travel destinations for some much needed wanderlusting and soul searching.
#1 Sarawak, Malaysia .
Sure, there are lakes, caves, jungles, and mountains to see in Sarawak, but the main focus of this trip is to experience how man and nature can live as one. Pay a visit to the Penan people, and live with them for several weeks. They are a nomadic aboriginal tribe who call the rainforest of Borneo home, and they are one of the last few people on earth who live a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
See for yourself how deforestation affects their simple way of life, and learn firsthand what it takes to survive in a cruel and selfish world. You will get the privilege to live with them, learn their survival techniques, embrace their loving and giving culture, and be overwhelmed by how much kindness there is in people who live a life unmarred by the evils of money, government, and the outside world.
#2 Taiga, Mongolia .
When one thinks of Mongolia, one can’t help but envision Genghis Khan and his fierce army riding across endless plains. Mongolia today is very much like it was eons ago, sans Genghis, of course.
What remains is untouched nature and the Dukha. They are nomadic reindeer herders who are strong advocates of their ancient way of life. So long as you do not disrupt their herding and nomadic patterns, this community welcomes visitors to stay with them for up to 3 days. Learn their fascinating history and traditions firsthand, and discover what it is really like to live off the grid.
#3 Varanasi, India .
If spirituality is what you seek, then India is where you need to head to, particularly Varanasi, a holy city perched on the Northern banks of the Ganges River. This city has played a vital role in the development of both Hinduism and Buddhism, and today, over 16% of its inhabitants are Muslim.
This makes for a wonderful spiritual and religious voyage and is not to be missed. Overlap your trip with one of the many festivals that take place, such as the five-day musical festival known as Dhrupad Mela and Nag Nathaiya that celebrates mythological tradition.
Keep in mind that your senses will be overwhelmed by the barrage of sights, sounds, and smells there. From rotting corpses to the sickly sweet smell of jasmine flowers, this is not a trip for the faint of heart.
#4 Mount Koya, Japan .
Mount Koya boasts eight peaks and is known as one of the most spiritual places in Japan. Pilgrims travel from far and wide to pay homage to the serenity of the mountain. You will come across everything from purification ceremonies to moss-covered tombstones, but no matter what you see, you can be sure that every aspect of it will be steeped in spirituality.
There are hundreds of temples in the area, many of which offer lodging and vegetarian meals to travelers, so take your pick and live like a monk for as long as you can.
#5 Green Island, Taiwan .
The East coast of Taiwan remains generally untouched, what more, a small volcanic island that lies just off of it? Its magnificent geographical landscape, natural beauty, and rich cultural background as the base of the aboriginal Amis folk make it a wonderful place to explore on your own. Scuba dive, hike, swim, and enjoy great seafood when you’re on Green Island.
This rock is also home to one of only three saltwater hot springs in the world. Head over at night for a soak, and be sure to look up at the stars. No matter what problems need solving, you will find a solution right there and then. At the very least, you will be at peace.
So wait no longer, and head for a much-needed soul searching adventure before time and self-doubt catch up with you.

10 Awe-Inspiring Places To Go Soul-Searching in the Philippines
The following is a guest post from Jason Biondo from Trekeffect
Feeling lost, and don’t know what to do with your life? Need a peace of mind? Then, the Philippines is truly the perfect place for you to go on a Eat-Pray-Love travel experience. With over gorgeous 7,000 islands to choose from, you will surely discover more about yourself and at the same time be able to experience a variety of memorable and exciting adventures. From the northern to southern part of the country, you will be thrilled how amazing the natural reserves the country offers.
For a rewarding and unforgettable experience, be sure to check out these stunning places before you book for your ultimate soul searching adventure!
Bright blue-colored waters, flawless lagoons and splendid rock formations are just some of the phrases that easily describe the peninsula of Palawan. Coron and El Nido, whichever you would like to visit, would give an exquisite feel of nature’s relaxing view. Over the recent years, the concealed beauty of the island has become widespread in the world of travelers. Since then, it has gained a lot of attention, making it as one of the must visit islands in the Philippines. But despite the ever-increasing crowd, the locals make sure that it remains a classic and serene destination that tourists will enjoy for quite a long time.
Waterfalls in Cebu
Located at the end of northern part of the Philippines, Batanes maintains a traditional and laid-back way of living. Nicknamed as the country’s version of Scotland, it is formed by three major islands and seven islets. With the houses made of rock stones, it remained strong and has conquered numerous disturbing storms every year. Although flying to Batanes is more expensive than any province in the country, this surreal paradise has a very small population, and anyone looking for a peace of mind would definitely commend this place.
Calaguas Island, Camarines Norte
This island is probably the newest discovery of travelers in the Bicol region. As there are no resorts or hotels in the area, no electricity or any shops, campers and backpackers enjoy the laid-back feel of the isolated island by setting up their tents on the powdery white sands. Being one of the lesser-known beaches in the country, one who’s looking for the perfect lone time would surely appreciate the crystal clear waters this remote surreal paradise offers.
Bantayan Island, Cebu
Bantayan coast is usually compared to Boracay, but what makes people prefer this place over the former is its silence and calming environment where there are no buzzing parties or huge crowds. With its long line of sandbars and crystal waters, visitors can enjoy sun tanning and swimming. Typhoon Haiyan may have caused damage to the island a couple of years ago, but it still remains stunning up to this day.
Bohol Chocolate Hills (photo by Jason Biondo)
Famed for many natural landscapes, Bohol remains to be one of the top tourists’ destinations in the Philippines. Aside from the Chocolate Hills and Mahogany Forests, the province is also a home of beautiful islands that are good for relaxation and soul searching. Islands like Panglao, Pamilacan and Balicasag are a good spot for exploring marine reserves and natural wonders that are decent places to retreat and spend some “me time”.
Sagada, Mountain Province
With its cool climate and lush vegetation, there is no doubt that Sagada is one of the top destinations for soul searching in the Philippines. Most of the roads to the highest and beautiful peaks are still underdeveloped and therefore it is advisable to walk through natural woodlands in order to get there. But once on top, you will surely get a small slice of heaven on earth, with Mt. Kiltipan’s sea of clouds and the smell of many scattered pine trees. Other good places to explore while on Sagada are the old-aged Lumiang and Sumaguing caves, the Hanging Coffins and rice terraces.
Sagada Terraces (photo by Jason Biondo)
Palaui Island
This island located in the region of Cagayan defines raw beauty by its jaw dropping coral gardens and marine reservations. The remote island is home to 50-hectares of undisturbed corals and 21 species of fish. This is one of the few islands that leave only two options to enjoy the place – camping through tents or home stays. The place was also featured as one of the settings of the two seasons of the popular US TV show, Survivor.
Batad, Ifugao
Famed for having the oldest and most beautiful rice terraces, Batad is considered one of the most visited places in the Cordillera region. Although it is not accessible through any form of vehicle because of its steep roads, tourists all over the globe still find this place worth visiting. Over the few years, locals have started to lease out rooms for tourists who want to experience some solitude in the isolated villages. Since the place is a remote area, resources are very limited, and there’s no internet access, making this place perfect for relaxation. And furthermore, you will be rewarded with stunning beauty of rice terraces.

Hinatuan River, Surigao del Sur
Surigao del Sur is blessed with a hidden treasure called the Hinatuan Enchanted River. It is a stunning crystal blue lagoon within a mountain and covered by the dense forest. It is still unknown where the water comes from as it is located in the deepest part of a forest and no one has ever reached the bottom yet. As mystical as it seems, this place can be a perfect place to have that much needed peace of mind while you swim by the crystal clear river.
Apo Island, Negros Region
Located in a remote area of Negros Oriental, the place can be accessed by boat from the Malatapay, Zamboanguita. Apo Island is one of the world’s best diving spots, and has magnificent white sands, beautiful marine conservation and unique rock formations. And because the area is secluded (hotels, resorts and restaurants are very limited), it is deemed as a good place for soul searchers.

What soul searching really means & 9 ways to do it, from experts.
Whether you're feeling lost, stuck, or simply uninspired, it can be hard to ignore when soul searching needs to take place. But how do you actually get started? To find out, we asked experts about their tips for soul searching, plus what it really means.
What "soul searching" really means.
Soul searching is the process of figuring out your purpose, your motivations, and what may need to change in your life in order to live in greater alignment with your true self. It often occurs as a result of feeling out of touch with yourself, or like something is missing.
As psychiatrist and author of Fulfilled: How the Science of Spirituality Can Help You Live a Happier, More Meaningful Life Anna Yusim, M.D., tells mbg, the soul is the deepest part of yourself that connects you to spirit, the universe, and divinity.
"By connecting to your soul, you get answers to questions in your life, and you get insights that neither your mind nor your heart can give you," she explains, adding, "It's really about your destiny path—and the voice of the soul is your intuition."
The purpose of soul searching.
As Thérèse Cator , embodiment practitioner and founder of Embodied Black Girl tells mbg, soul searching often arises from an inquiry, whether it's a broad question around your overall purpose or something more focused, such as a difficult decision you're facing.
"I see soul searching as a threshold in our lives," Cator says. "It's a crossroad and we're trying to figure out what the right next path is, what the right next decision is, or who are we in the greater scheme of things."
And as Yusim adds, people who are soul searching typically seek to become more authentic, live in alignment with what they truly want on the deepest level, and own their truth.
Why someone may feel the need for soul searching.
There are a number of reasons someone may feel inclined to do some soul searching, and it can happen numerous times throughout their life. As Yusim explains, people soul search when they need answers, a new direction, or are seeking to understand themselves and their purpose .
As with any kind of search that has to do with psychological and spiritual advancement and development, Yusim says it's often because there's something that feels missing , or people are in some form of emotional pain. "So, soul searching is their way of regaining equilibrium or bringing back what's been missing or has not been aligned," she notes.
It's also important to factor in societal expectations around purpose and worth , Cator adds. "We're so disconnected from the rhythms of life and not taught to ask ourselves the deeper questions of ' Who am I ?' and 'What's my purpose?'"
How to actually soul search:
Strengthen your intuition..
According to Yusim, one of the most important things to do when soul searching is to get in touch with your intuition . To do this, she says, you must learn to quiet the "otherwise very loud voices that often speak—the voice of your mind, the voice of your heart—to hear the deeper voice of your intuition."
Embrace stillness.
Oftentimes we lose touch with our inner voice, intuition, higher self—whatever you want to call it—because we don't give ourselves enough time for stillness. As such, Cator says it's very important to embrace rest and build in moments of silence and stillness within your day—and ditch habits (like compulsive scrolling , for example) that keep you from being present.
Get out into nature.
Cator is also a big fan of nature for offering both inner stillness and quiet, as well as opportunities for insight. "You can go on a nature walk , but go on the walk with an inquiry," she explains.
Whatever it is you're looking to have answered, "go out and allow nature to speak to you through symbols," she adds, whether it be a certain animal that means something specific to you or even a snippet of an overheard conversation that's somehow relevant to your situation.
Cator and Yusim both recommend meditation for soul searching, as it's an excellent way to both quiet the mind and ask for insight. Just like you can go on a nature walk with an inquiry in mind, Cator notes you can meditate on that same question .
And as Yusim adds, you need to be able to differentiate your soul from the voice of the mind and the voice of your heart—so from your emotions and your reason—and meditation is a great way to start to do so.
Writing out all of your thoughts and questions on your soul-searching journey is another good way to tap your intuition for insights. Cator recommends free-journaling without censorship, simply allowing yourself to write. Yusim is a fan of journaling too and recommends writing and reflecting on questions like:
- What do I most deeply desire?
- Do I desire something even more deeply than that?
- If I allowed myself to fully live my truth, how would my life be different than it is now?
- What stops me from living my truth?
- What are the resistances that keep me from my best self and living the life I want?
- If I wanted to actualize my deepest desire, what would my first step be?
- What am I really afraid of? When does my logic most often disagree with my instinctive reaction?
Be receptive to insights and messages.
As Cator explains, it's always a good idea to be open to messages you receive throughout your day, such as angel numbers , intuitive downloads , and other synchronicities . Keeping your eyes, ears, and mind open to messages can help you strengthen your intuition and receive answers when you least expect them.
Seek the help of like-minded friends.
It's important to remember that only you truly know what's best for you; however, if you have a group of friends that you trust and admire, and feel they can hold space for you, Cator says you can do a group meditation on your soul-searching inquiries. "You can all go into meditation together," she explains, and then share what came up for each of you.
Seek the help of a mentor.
Similarly, Yusim notes it's not a bad idea to seek the help of a mentor when soul searching. Maybe you speak with an actual mentor or teacher, a mental health professional, or a respected member of your community. You want to look for someone who has deep insight into matters of the soul and can offer you an objective perspective, she says.
Take a sabbatical.
If you're able to, Cator notes that taking a sabbatical can be a great way to step away from things for a time and reflect. While not everyone can do this on a whim, everyone deserves a vacation once in a while, as they offer us the stillness and quiet we need for our intuition to come through.
Important things to keep in mind:
Know that it's normal to soul search..
In a world that pressures us to have it all together, it can be discouraging to feel like you're "not on track." But according to Cator, we ought to normalize, and even encourage, soul searching. "It's actually really good to reexamine things every now and then, and ask, 'Is this working for me?'" she explains.
She adds that it's a natural part of the cycle of life to go through periods of rebirth, with some of us are bound to soul search multiple times in our lives. "We get to reinvent different parts of ourselves," she says, adding, "If we're doing that in the hopes of individual and collective liberation, we know we're on the right path."
Don't ignore your shadow.
According to Yusim, you can't truly soul search without acknowledging your shadow self . "It's so important to embrace your shadow side ," she explains, "because we have this conception of who we are—but there are also parts of us that we disavow, aren't in touch with, and haven't owned," she explains. And if you want to have wholeness in your life, she says, you'll have to embrace those parts.
Be patient.
And last but certainly not least, try to be patient as you move through this transformation. Soul searching is certainly not a one-and-done process, and it takes time. The initial steps of your soul searching journey are only beginning to prime your subconscious for change, Yusim says, and then you have to "give it time to actually unfold."
The bottom line.
If you're going through a period of soul searching , keep going. Something deep within you is pushing you to go after the life you want—and that's a beautiful thing. While it may not happen overnight, your search will eventually bring you back to yourself, and your soul.

12 Trips You Need To Take, Depending On What Stage Of Life You're At
The trips you end up taking over the years will differ according to what stage of your life you're in.
The rowdy Eurotrip with your best buds is perfect when all you want to do is party and flirt with boys with accents. The soul-searching solo trip is what you need when you're at the crossroads of life. The relaxing island getaway is for when you need a breather from your full-time job and the responsibilities of adulthood.
Here are the 12 trips you should take, depending on what stage of your life you're at:
1. The "Backpacking" Trip
Try: Eastern Europe
Backpacking aligns perfectly with the adventure-seeking ethos of younger travelers, and it's a good option for those who are keen to save their pennies in order to make the journey last a little longer.
Often taken as a transitional trip (between high school and university or between jobs), backpacking is an excellent way to see the world on a budget and a great opportunity to make friends (and more than friends) in the boisterous hostels that you stay in along the way.
Eastern Europe is a fantastic region to backpack through, as it is considerable cheaper than Western Europe, and it has just as much history, architecture and culture to offer.
Alternatives: Southeast Asia and South America
2. The "Island" Trip
Try: The Gili Islands off Lombok, Indonesia
The island getaway is ideal for those times when you're in need of some pampering and time off from the daily grind of life. It's all about the three Rs: rest, rejuvenation and rubs. (Yes, I'm taking about massages, and plenty of them.)
The Gili Islands offer a relaxing island escape, and they are quickly gaining in popularity with tourists. There are three islands: Gili Meno, Gili Air and Gili Trawangan. Choose one, or island-hop between all three.
Alternatives: Boracay, Philippines, the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands, Australia
3. The "Solo" Trip
AKA the "find yourself" trip, this journey is for those needing to re-evaluate or ponder the meaning of life. Or, it's simply the only option when no one is free to travel with you.
Whether single or in a relationship, solo trips are perfect for soul-searching and getting an adequate dose of "me" time. Peru is a suitable choice for solo travel, as the country offers such a wide variety of landscapes and experiences that will test yourself and your limits.
You can go sand boarding in Huacachina, drink pisco in the wine region of Ica, explore the colonial city of Arequipa, visit the floating villages of Lake Titicaca and, of course, hike the Inca Trail and arrive at the Sun Gate for the ultimate sunrise in solo nirvana.
Alternatives: Norway and Japan
4. The "Couples" Trip
Try: The Amalfi Coast, Italy
Getting away together on a "trip for two" allows couples to focus on each other and to rekindle the flames of passion that can get flicker dangerously low when combined with the less romantic facets of life, such as work and house chores.
It's the secret to a long and lasting relationship. At least, this is what I tell the hubby. (No one tell him otherwise!)
The Amalfi Coast radiates romance with its pastel-colored, cliff-perched buildings, the shimmer of the sea and the lyrical tongue of its locals. In a word, it's bellissimo.
Alternatives: Havana, Cuba and Granada, Spain
5. The "Luxury" Trip
Try: A Luxury Safari In Tanzania
Maybe you've just gotten a promotion with a hefty pay increase, you've come into some money or you're just thinking "to hell with it," but there are times when you need to treat yo' self and enjoy the finer things in life without feeling guilty.
A luxury African safari allows indulgent comfort and exhilarating experiences, and after a day in the savanna of close encounters with the wildlife, you'll be able to retire to your lodge like the adventurer that you are.
Invest in some key khaki and beige pieces to get the full experience.
Alternatives: Dubai and skiing in St. Moritz, Switzerland
6. The "Festival" Trip
Try: The Burning Man Festival, Nevada
There are certain festivals around the world that are worth basing a trip around, and the Burning Man Festival can be counted as one of them.
Thousands of people descend on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to create a temporary city, which espouses the ideals of self-expression and self-reliance.
A pop-up city? Pretty incredible. It's part hippy commune, part psychedelic creative hub and all-round good times.
Alternatives: Holi, India and Lantern Festival, Taiwan
7. The "Family" Trip
Try: New Zealand
Family trips can be surprisingly difficult to organize because it can be an ordeal trying to find a destination that has activities to entertain every member of the family. Cost and proximity are also factors to consider.
New Zealand offers the ideal combination of fun, outdoor escapades and adventurous activities, as well as some epic scenic drives where games of I Spy can be played in the backseat.
Alternatives: Fiji and Hawaii
8. The "BFFs" Trip
Sometimes, all you want to do is get away with your bestie, to catch up on all of life's happenings and to reminisce about the past, all the while creating new memories to look back on in future.
Go somewhere vibrant and full of color such as India. It's an experience that will truly awaken the senses.
You'll return with tales that your BFF will keep bringing up for years to come because that's what friends are for.
Alternatives: Morocco and Spain
9. The "Road" Trip
Try: Ring Road, Iceland
The Ring Road (or Route 1) in Iceland is quite possibly the easiest road trip you can do. It is basically a loop around the entire island, making it virtually impossible to get lost.
However, there is so much to see along the way that you'll need to dedicate a leisurely couple of weeks to take it all in. If you're short on time, focus on one area of the island, such as the southern area.
Alternatives: South Island, New Zealand and Garden Route, South Africa
10. The "Hiking" Trip
Try: Appalachian Trail, USA
A hiking trip is a great way to get back to nature and to escape urban life, at least for a little while. The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, and it runs across 14 American states — from Georgia to Maine — passing mountainous terrain, forest and lakes.
Practice your bird calls before you set off into the wilderness.
Alternatives: Overland Track, Tasmania and Fitz Roy Trek, Patagonia
11. The "Foodie" Trip
Try: Vietnam
But of course, you should plan a trip around food. I mean, it's the fuel that sustains us, right?
Whether you're a gastronomic foodie or you eat to live, head to Vietnam for a culinary adventure of delectable proportions. Each region serves up cuisine that differs slightly in taste and flavor.
In Northern Vietnam, black pepper is often used in place of chilis, and flavors are subtle. Central Vietnamese dishes are more complex, and the use of chilis is abundant. And South Vietnam offers slightly sweeter dishes.
Fill your belly with pho, bun bo hue, banh xeo, banh beo and banh canh.
Alternatives: Lima, Peru and New Orleans, USA
12. The "Volunteer" Trip
Try: Anywhere
It's always good to give back to the community, whether it be through our time or expertise. Consider a volunteering trip, and perhaps align it with your area of interest, such as teaching, community development or conservation.
