Tour de France 2022: Preview, schedule and riders to watch

As Tadej Pogacar goes for a hat-trick of victories, here's everything you need to know about this year's edition of Le Tour, which starts on 1 July in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Tadej Pogacar celebrates overall victory at 2021 Tour de France

The second Grand Tour of the 2022 men's road cycling season, the 109th Tour de France , begins on Friday 1 July in Copenhagen, Denmark, and will end as usual in Paris on Sunday 24 July.

Tokyo 2020 medallists Tadej Pogacar , Primoz Roglic and Wout van Aert headline the race that will cover a total of over 3,300km across 21 stages. There are five summit finishes, two time trials and six flat stages.

Slovenia's Pogacar is looking to claim the winner's yellow jersey for the third consecutive year, matching a feat most recently achieved by four-time champion Chris Froome (2015, 2016, 2017).

Following a postponement from last year due to a schedule clash with the Euro 2020 football tournament, Denmark will become the 10th country to host the Grand Depart. The 2022 route will also go into Belgium (Stage 6) and Switzerland (Stages 8 and 9), making it the first time since 2017 that four different countries feature in the same edition.

Some 176 riders will take part, eight for each of the 22 teams. That's one fewer team than in the 2021 edition.

The last day of the men's Grand Boucle will coincide with the start of the historic eight-stage inaugural Tour de France Femmes , which replaces the La Course one-day women's race.

Below you can find everything you need to know about one of the world's most gruelling endurance events this year.

2021 Tour de France podium

Tour de France 2022 General Classification men to watch

Tadej Pogacar: The Olympic road race bronze medallist comes into the 2022 Grand Boucle as the overwhelming favourite. The Slovenian has won every stage race he has taken part in this season (UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of Slovenia) and is going for a hat-trick of victories on the Tour at just 23 years of age.

Primoz Roglic: The Tokyo 2020 time trial gold medallist came agonisingly close to the GC win in 2020, while he had to abandon the race last year following a crash. The former ski jumper seems to have recovered from a knee injury that affected the first part of his season and is fresh from an overall win at the Criterium du Dauphine.

Daniel Martinez: With 2019 winner Egan Bernal still recovering from a horrific training accident, his fellow Colombian is ready to be the leader of Ineos Grenadiers after taking the Tour of the Basque Country this spring. The British team has won seven of the Tour's last 10 editions and Martinez could share the leadership with 2018 champion Geraint Thomas , who recently won the Tour de Suisse.

Jonas Vingegaard : The 25-year-old Dane finished as a surprise runner-up in 2021, and this season with two second places at the Tirreno-Adriatico and Dauphine has shown he's ready to step up if his Jumbo-Visma teammate Roglic is not fully fit.

Aleksandr Vlasov: Following Jai Hindley 's success at the Giro d'Italia, Bora-Hansgrohe's hopes of winning their second Grand Tour this year lie on the shoulders of the Russian rider riding under a neutral flag. Vlasov took impressive overall victories at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and Tour de Romandie, but he was forced to abandon the Tour of Suisse for Covid when he was leader.

Other key riders at Tour de France 2022

Green jersey.

Last year's points competition winner Mark Cavendish hasn't been selected by his team Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl (he's been named as a first-reserve rider) and that means that the 37-year-old Manxman will have to wait before being able to surpass the legendary Eddy Merckx for number of stage wins (both are tied on 34).

The Belgian team will be led by Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen , who is hoping to take advantage of the sprint opportunities. Australian Caleb Ewan of Lotto-Soudal and Netherlands' Dylan Groenewegen of the Team Bike Exchange-Jayco also fancy their chances.

The course includes several hilly stages and that might favour puncheurs such as record seven-time green jersey winner Peter Sagan , who recently was back to winning ways at the Tour de Suisse before withdrawing due to a positive Covid test. The three-time world champion made a quick recovery to take his eighth Slovakian national title.

Other contenders for the green jersey will be multi-talented riders Mathieu van der Poel , who wore the leader's pink jersey at the Giro for the first three stages, and Wout van Aert , who took the points classification at both the Criterium du Dauphine and Paris-Nice this season.

Polka dot jersey

Pogacar secured the king of the mountains classification at the last two editions, and in the history of the Tour only four riders have won it more than twice (the record belongs to Richard Virenque with seven).

The Slovenian talisman will probably be challenged by some of the other GC contenders (Roglic, Vlasov, Vingegaard), as well as by Frenchmen Thibaut Pinot , who recently took the queen stage of the Tour de Suisse, and 2019 polka dot winner Romain Bardet , who was forced to leave the last Giro after suffering from stomach issues.

Tour 2022 route and important stages

The 2022 Tour de France begins with a technical 13km time trial along the streets of Copenhagen that will suit the discipline's specialists such as double reigning world champion Filippo Ganna , Stefan Bissegger of Switzerland (EF Education-EasyPost) and two-time world medallist Van Aert.

After two further stages in Denmark, the race will resume in France on Tuesday 5 July and a day later on Stage 5 cobbles will make their return for the first time since 2018. Week one is highlighted by the summit finish on the Super Planche des Belles Filles, with the following two stages foraying into Switzerland, including a finish at the Olympic Stadium in Lausanne .

During the second week the peloton heads deeper into the Alps with two straight gruelling mountain stages. On stage 11 the riders will climb the Col du Telegraphe and Col du Galibier (the highest point of the race at 2,642m) before finishing on the top of the Col du Granon; stage 12 on Bastille Day will be equally testing and will feature a summit finish on the Alpe d'Huez for the first time in five years.

The Tour will then move across the Massif Central towards the Pyrenees with the final rest day in Carcassonne. Two more back-to-back summit finishes on stage 17 (Peyragudes) and 18 (Hautacam) will offer the final chance to specialist climbers to gain ground in the GC before a 40km time trial on stage 20.

The final stage ending in Paris will see sprinters lock horns for one last time on this edition along the Champs-Elysees.

Tour de France 2022 start list: Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič and Wout Van Aert all line up for the 109th edition

The squads of all 22 teams starting in Denmark in the battle for the yellow jersey

Tour de France startlist

The 2022 Tour de France begins on Friday 1 July, with 176 riders taking to the start line at the Grand Départ in Denmark before finishing, as usual, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on Sunday 24 July.

Reigning champion, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) is returning to try and win the title for the third successive year over the 21 days of racing to Paris, but he and his team will face a tough battle for the Maillot Jaune.

His compatriot Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) is expected to provide him the most difficult test at the Grand Tour, with Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), and Daniel Martínez (Ineos Grenadiers) ready and waiting for any opportunities in the general classification.

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), Tour winner from 2018, also lines up, but he will likely ride for his teammates rather than making an attempt at the yellow jersey himself, despite recently winning the Tour de Suisse. After twice finishing second at the Tour de France before, and once in third, Nairo Quintana (Arkéa Samsic) is no doubt desperate to stand on the top step of the podium this time around, though his chances in doing so look slim.

Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech) is starting at the 2022 Tour de France, and while a GC challenge is extremely unlikely, the four-time Tour winner will still believe he can produce consistently over the three weeks.

Romain Bardet (Team DSM) perhaps offers France's greatest opportunity at a home win, though he has previously stated stage wins are the main goal at this Tour, rather than the overall victory.

Plenty of other riders are aiming for stage wins and the different jerseys on offer, too. Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will resume battle in France. While the latter has claimed he is only targeting stage wins, rather than the points classification, it is likely he will still have to beat Van Aert on a few occasions to achieve that goal.

Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl are placing their sprint hopes on Fabio Jakobsen, opting not to bring Mark Cavendish into the fold - a stage win for the Manxman would give him the most stage wins in Tour history, allowing him to overtake Eddy Merckx as the pair both sit on 34.

Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) also join Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) in lining up for the Grands Départs in Denmark, adding their names to an already stellar start list of some of cycling's biggest names.

Tour de France : Final stage of glory in Paris

Inspiration

Paris Cycling Tourism Sporting Activities

Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 January 2023, updated on 16 April 2024

The final sprint of the Tour de France always takes place on Paris’ famous avenue. On 18 July, as it has every year since 1975, the last stage of the famous cycling race will end on the Champs-Élysées.

With 3,383 kilometres for the legs to tackle and some 403,000 pedal strokes over three weeks, taking part in the Tour de France is no easy task.

In view of the conclusion of the 21st and final stage of the Grand Boucle , the peloton will give it all they’ve got. Before parading in the capital, the riders will have sweated to climb the 30 passes of the 2021 race, rising in their saddles to pick up momentum and clenching their teeth in the vertiginous descents.

The Champs-Élysées in all its majesty

From Brittany to the Alps, from the Occitanie to the Pyrenees, the riders will have been so focused on their performance that they won’t have soaked up much of the photogenic landscapes of France, broadcast across 100 TV channels.

But by the end of the efforts, what a reward: the majestic Champs-Élysées, with the blue-white-red wake of the famous Patrouille de France fly-past. Nobody else has such a claim on the famous avenue except the French football team, winner of the World Cup in 2018.

Standing on the podium at the bottom of the famous Parisian avenue, with the setting sun at the Arc de Triomphe and Grande Arche de la Défense as a backdrop, the winner of the Tour will have – like all his fellow riders – accomplished the Parisian ritual.

Established in 1975, this involves riding up and down the Champs-Élysées eight times, totalling 1,910 legendary metres separating the obelisk of the Place de la Concorde from the star of the Place Charles-de-Gaulle.

A ride beside the Louvre Pyramid

Seen from above, the spectacle of the peloton winding like a long ribbon decorated around the Arc de Triomphe is magical. From the pavements lining the route of this final sprint, the enthusiasm of the public pushes the riders on through the Quai des Tuileries, Place des Pyramides and Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

Will they take a look as they go past? Not sure. Almost lying on their handlebars, they traditionally take this last stage at a crazy pace, overlooking the cobblestones and prestigious landmarks around. Louis Vuitton, Guerlain, Ladurée and even, recently, the Galeries Lafayette, make up the exclusive backdrop of the peloton’s arrival on the Champs-Élysées.

Among the live support or behind your TV screen, it’s you who will enjoy all these beauties... happy as a spectator of the Tour!

Tour de france stage 2: a day for the puncheurs, echoes of the ardennes classics will please the climbers..

Stage 2 — Sunday, June 30 Cesenatico to Bologna Distance: 200.8 km (125 miles) Profile: Undulating stage

Stage 2: Echoes of the Ardennes classics will please the climbers

The Tour’s salute to 1998 winner Marco Pantani continues on stage 2 with a stage start in his hometown of Cesenatico. It covers 200.8km to Bologne and, like stage 1, has a number of uphills which should shake things up. All are short and steep, however, making it a different day in the saddle than 24 hours earlier.

Reminiscent of the Ardennes classics, albeit with fewer climbs, the stage is flat for the first 74km. The tone then shifts on the first of the day’s six climbs, the Côte de Monticino (2km at 7.5 percent). From there the riders descend for 10km before taking on the steepest and shortest ascent of the day, the Côte de Gallisterna.

While it is just 1.2km in length, it averages 12.8 percent and will favor explosive riders.

After descending into Imola a 42km interlude follows before the next two climbs, the Côte de Botteghino di Zocca and the Côte de Montecalvo. The second of these is both longer and steeper, with 2.7km at 7.7 percent proving a real platform for those who are either chasing yellow or a stage win.

From there 48km remains, with two laps of the finishing circuit subjecting the riders to the plus-10 percent slopes of the Côte de San Luca. The finish line isn’t far from there, making for a dramatic end to the stage and, very possibly, a new race leader.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “The passage across the Emilia-Romagna region is straightforward enough to begin with as it takes the peloton to Imola and its famous motor racing circuit. The final part of the stage, featuring the climb to the Sanctuary of San Luca (1.9km at 10.6 percent), the traditional finale of the Giro dell’Emilia, which will be tackled twice in the final 40km, offers fertile terrain for the peloton’s puncheurs.”
