Best Time to Take a Bus Tour in NYC
The sights of New York are not limited to a season or a time. But some moments bring out the best in the city. Warm spring days and crisp fall mornings often offer the perfect balance of comfort and clear skies, ideal for a bus tour that will take you past historical highlights and modern marvels alike. During these times, the city sheds its extreme heat and cold for a pleasant day of sightseeing.
For those willing to wrap up warmly, winter brings its charm. The streets are less crowded, and holiday lights frame the view from the bus window – this is a quiet time to contemplate the city’s architecture without the usual hustle. It’s when you can appreciate the true structure of the city, the bones beneath the flesh of everyday rush.
Night Tours to See New York City Lights
There is something about New York at night – a certain magic that daylight can’t capture. The city buzzes with different energy after sundown, and night bus tours are an excellent way to witness this transformation. The city’s famous buildings light up like stars against the night sky, and you see the true liveliness of New York.
These tours can offer a fresh perspective on familiar sights. Times Square’s neon lights seem to glow hotter, and the quieter streets of downtown take on a dignified grace. On a bus, you are privy to an unobstructed view of it all as the city’s nightlife comes alive around you. It’s a visual treat, an absolute shouldn’t-miss experience.
Themed Bus Tours for Every Interest
New York has a tour for every type of traveler, and bus tours in the city are no exception. Themed tours are unique trips planned around specific interests – food, film locations, or historical landmarks. You could spend a morning nibbling through New York’s culinary routes or an afternoon following the fictional footsteps of your favorite TV show.
Film aficionados will be thrilled to follow a route showcasing iconic movie scenes in real-life settings. On the other hand, history buffs can be whisked off to sites steeped in the city’s past, complete with tales of bygone days. These tours are created not just to show but also to tell – narrative journeys guided by themes that take you beyond the mere view from the window.
Each of these themed explorations offers more than the sum of their stops – they provide stories, tastes, and sights that stick with you, providing a richer understanding of the diversity and depth of New York. They’re specially tailored snippets of the city, delivered on the move.

A bus tour in New York City promises adventure and new sights, but comfort and enjoyment don’t just happen. They require a bit of planning. First, it’s wise to check the weather before your tour. The city’s weather can shift suddenly, so dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changes throughout the day. Comfortable shoes are a must, too, in case you want to hop off at an intriguing location.
Remember to pick seats that suit you best. If you love to capture moments, a seat on the upper deck of a double-decker bus might be your best bet for unobstructed views. However, if you’re sensitive to the sun, you might prefer the sheltered lower deck. Bringing along water and snacks can keep energy levels up without pausing the tour for refreshments.
How to Combine Bus Tours with Other NYC Attractions
New York City bus tours offer a comprehensive overview of the city, but pairing them with visits to specific attractions can deepen your experience. A smart strategy is to review the bus tour route in advance and note any stops near attractions you’re keen to explore further. Many bus tickets offer hop-on and hop-off options, allowing you the flexibility to explore an area on foot and then continue your journey later.

Arrive in Broken Hill
Day 1 Monday
You will be met by your Host from Silver City Tours and escorted to accommodation.
Day 2 Tuesday (LB, L, D)
Commence our Silver Trail Adventure with an underground tour of the Historic Daydream Mine with its workings dating back to 1881. Head to the Ghost Town of Silverton (which was founded prior to Broken Hill) for lunch at the infamous Silverton Hotel. You may experience a rush of recognition for anyone who’s seen Razorback, Wake in Fright, The Slim Dusty Movie, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert or even Mad Max 2, the list goes on with many more movies and TV ads filmed in this iconic Australian location. Discover Silverton’s colourful past as you will have time to explore the museums and chat with locals.
We head back to Broken Hill for a Sunset experience at the Broken Hill Sculpture Symposium, and your day of exploring will come to a close.
Overnight – Broken Hill
Day 3 Wednesday (LB, L, D)
This leisurely tour takes you around the Menindee Lakes scheme, with scenic stops along the way at Menindee and Kinchega National Park (roads permitting). The highlight of the trip is a wetlands cruise on the River Lady, where you'll get up close and personal with the abundant wildlife that calls this area home. Afterwards we travel back to Broken Hill where your day will come to an end
Day 4 Thursday (LB, L, D)
Depart Broken Hill and begin our adventure travelling north east of Broken Hill towards the unique outback opal-mining town of ‘White Cliffs’. Along the way, we call into Wilcannia, one of the first ports on the mighty Darling River for a morning tea stop and a chance to have a look at this once thriving town. Back on the road we have a short trip (short by outback terms) into White Cliffs, where we will discover this quirky underground township.
Most of this tiny community lives underground, whilst above ground there is an eerie lunar
landscape, which has been created by 140 years of mining for the elusive opal. Our tour of
White Cliffs gives us the opportunity to meet some great outback characters! There will be an opportunity to try your luck ‘noodling’ for opal in the working opal fields, or perhaps buy a special piece from one of the many opal dens that are located in White Cliffs. After Lunch we venture underground to experience a modern day working opal mine at Red Earth Opal. Graeme will spin a yarn about how to mine opal now and what it was like for the pioneers that opened up this part of the World.
Accommodation tonight is at the famous Underground Motel – an experience you will never forget. A few things to note re White Cliffs Underground Motel
Overnight – White Cliffs
Day 5 Friday (LB, L, D)
Leaving White Cliffs this morning, we head out on Whipstick Road, along gibba plains and the Koonenbury Ranges. You will hear tales of the Aboriginal Dreamtime story about the creation of the Darling River. We stop along the way for Morning Tea, maybe at an abandoned woolshed or just in one of the fantastic creek beds that are the lifeline to this fast country when it rains, with many photo opportunities of our forever changing landscapes, fauna and flora along the way.
Lunch will be at the historic Milparinka Hotel. There will be time to see the newly opened Gold Fields and Charles Sturt/Sidney Kidman interpretive centres, as well as the historic courthouse, police station and gaol.
After lunch we visit Depot Glen and Poole's Grave - the site where Explorer Captain Charles Sturt's party spent six months waiting for the drought to break in 1845. Then it's on to Tibooburra our base for the next two nights.
Tibooburra is the capital of the Corner Country, and is the essence of an outback town. Established at the height of the gold rush, many of the early buildings remain. The culture of the community reflects Tibooburras’ heritage, and with a population of appx 150 there are plenty of fascinating conversations to be had around the bar of one of the town’s authentic outback pubs.
Overnight - Tibooburra
Day 6 Saturday (LB, L, D)
An early morning start as we keep heading north to Sturt National Park, the home of the ‘Big Red’ kangaroo, and marvel at the scenery of the ‘Jump-Ups’, in the morning light from the Olive Downs Lookout where we rest with a cuppa while we take in the view. We continue north towards the Toona Gate on the dingo fence NSW / Qld border and take in the beautiful 40km dirt track over red sandhills and spinifex to Cameron Corner.
It's then onto the Cameron Corner Store for lunch. Whilst we are at the ‘Corner’ we make a memorable visit to the ‘corner post’ where NSW, QLD and SA State Boarders meet, and pass through the ‘Dingo Fence’ as we head into South Australia and back to NSW.
We then head off to discover Fort Grey where there is a tribute to all the members of Sturt's party - including animals. We also enjoy the view over Lake Pinnaroo.
Day 7 Sunday (LB, L, D)
After breakfast we travel south through ever changing landscapes with plenty of photo opportunities along the way. Bird and wildlife abound in the Corner Country, your guide will explain to you our native wildlife in their outback environment.
Time and conditions permitting, we will share a cuppa with one of the locals who will share their story with you about living in the very isolated part of Australia. We take a detour to Peak Hill and enjoy stunning views. Set amongst the sand hills near two ancient lakes is the site of the former Cobham Hotel, and the lone grave of one of the servants, a lady named Eliza Kennedy. She was said to be the housekeeper at the hotel.
On your way to Packsaddle Roadhouse for a lunch stop, your driver/guide will tell of the story behind the RFDS and why it is featured on the Australian $20 note. Packsaddle is a quirky outback Roadhouse; you will enjoy its outback hospitality with a chance to check out the memorabilia from the wool industry displayed in the rustic dining room.
Overnight - Broken Hill
Day 8 Monday (LB, L, D)
Spend the day exploring Broken Hill, Australia’s First Heritage listed City. Learn about the discovery of the largest silver, lead and zinc ore body in the Southern Hemisphere and the impact the enormous wealth of the Silver City had on the development of Australia. You will visit the Miner’s Memorial on the Line of Lode where the views over Broken Hill are spectacular.
On our journey we will visit the Pro Hart Gallery, named for one of Australia’s most beloved and iconic figures. Pro was a true champion of Broken Hill, and his work on the “Big Picture”- the world’s largest acrylic painting on canvas- is a testament to his talent and vision.
