Playing and Performing Through Life’s Challenges

Despite much adversity, Mark Volman has had a very happy life. A founding member of the 1960s band The Turtles, he and his high school friends signed with a record label at 18 years old and it changed their lives. “It was a whole new world for us, and a chance for us to get out of Westchester, California, travel and play our music,” he says.

Since then, his life has been filled with adventure. He’s played with other great musical icons like John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and Frank Zappa. One of the band’s most iconic songs, and the one most people can’t help singing along with, is "Happy Together."

For the past nine years, Mark and a group of other renowned singers and bands from the 1960s, including Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night), The Association, Mark Lindsay (former lead singer of Paul Revere & The Raiders) and The Cowsills, have been touring together. The Happy Together 2023 tour kicked off in May in Florida, and when it’s finished, the musicians will have played 40 shows, including one at the Ryman Auditorium last August.

“These are all groups I grew up with and I just love all of their songs and their music,” says Mark. “The tour is just really fun, and at the end of the night, we do a finale. It's a memorable time for each of us, a spiritual thing. These are the people I will be with until the end of my life.”

To keep things fresh, the tour changes somewhat every year. “Bringing Little Anthony onto our tour this year has really given us a whole new kind of life,” he says. “He's not only a genuinely sweet man, but he participates in some of the goofiest things on the road.”

The tour draws many original fans, but the audience is comprised of people of all ages. “We see so many 16 to 21-year-olds who want to play and hear the music of The Turtles, the Beatles, Grand Funk Railroad and all the artists that are in our show,” says Mark. “Our songs cover the generational scope. We’re like a museum on tour. There’s a lot of love that takes place and it’s what Woodstock tried to do in terms of bringing relationships together.” There are now plans in the works for a Happy Together album.

While being on tour is never easy, Mark was faced with some extra challenges. In 2015, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to go through grueling treatments in order to beat it. Then in 2020, he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, a condition that can lead to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood.

“It's harder than I thought, but I have the greatest people around me,” he says. “Members of my band trail around to make sure I'm okay. I can’t thank them enough or my family. My kids call me every night when I’m on the road to make sure I'm OK. There's a lot going on in my brain, but I have a fun life. I'm really blessed and I can't let it get to me. I just have to keep working through it. We're already talking about next year's tour.”

Many people also remember Mark as Flo (short for Phlorescent Leech). With lifelong comic foil Howard Kaylan, Mark was Flo to his Eddie and the duo has been compared to a rock-era Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Along with his musical success, Mark is also very accomplished in the world of academia. At the age of 44, he began his pursuit of degrees that would allow him to become an assistant professor and chair of the Entertainment Industry Studies program in the Mike Curb School for Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University.

“Professors brought me in to talk about The Turtles and I was already doing other things at universities to fill my life with teaching others how to utilize their musical talent," he says. "It’s not going to go anywhere if they don’t make it happen, and they need to step into the business of being an artist. Learning all of those elements was a challenge for me.”

He adds, “I wanted to be able to help young singers, songwriters, publishers, and those in management with all of the things I was swamped with as an artist. After six years, I finally graduated with a bachelor's and master’s, doing everything that the school demanded I go through in order to teach. I even sang in the choir.”

For 12 years, he greatly enjoyed teaching and misses it. “But I can't do everything,” says Volman. “Now I want to do more creatively. I want to write and I have some ideas for film and television.”

Speaking of writing, Mark’s book, Happy Forever: My Musical Adventures With The Turtles, Frank Zappa, T. Rex, Flo & Eddie, and More , was published in June. Although it’s labeled as an autobiography, his life is mostly told through memories, anecdotes and reflections of over 100 of his friends, peers and family members. This impressive list includes members of the Doors, the E Street Band, The Monkees, and other major players in the world of radio, animation and academia. Underneath some of these reflections are responses, often humorous, by Volman. The book also includes never-before-seen photos, and forewords by Alice Cooper and Chris Hillman.

“I was so surprised that so many people wanted to be involved in the book, and there were times I almost didn't recognize the character they were writing about," says Volman. "He sounded like a really nice guy and I wanted to meet him. I felt like Sally Field at times, ‘They liked me! They really liked me!’ It was an interesting way to conceptualize the different ways that artists look at each other."

"Honestly, it took me 13 years to be able to put the final note on this book. At the end of each year, we came to a point where John Cody [who compiled the book with Mark] and I were going to review what we've created that year, but we weren't sure how to stop or when it was going to stop, so every year we just kept adding to it.”

This book has inspired him to work on another one. “It was just a magnificent experience for me and now I’m working to put together a book called Tales From the Road , which is stories about being on tour. "I’m finding a new way to create and I’m happy to see it unfold. I’ve got all these big plans. I've written some movies and there are kids’ shows I'd like to be a part of. I’m just going to take it one day at a time and see what God's plan is for me.”

When not creating, on tour, or writing books, Mark’s happy to hang out at his home in Franklin. “I really love the area. I love the city,” he says. “I love the people who are coming here. Happy together and happy forever is how it should be.”

Mark Volman of The Turtles Shares News of Progressive Neurological Disorder

happy forever tour

From the People feature: Volman had been experiencing hallucinations, tremors and struggles with concentration for several years but he wasn’t diagnosed until 2020. The progressive brain disorder is the second-most common form of degenerative dementia after Alzheimer’s. Actor Robin Williams also suffered from LBD for years before taking his own life in 2014.

Volman began to notice his symptoms in 2018, while teaching a music business program at Belmont University in Nashville. “I remember slurring, and I wasn’t sure what was going on,” he told People . “My brain wandered. I’d go off track. It made no sense.”

After earning their first hit with 1965’s Bob Dylan cover “It Ain’t Me Babe,” the Turtles went on to achieve enormous pop success with such singles as “She’d Rather Be With Me,” “Elenore,” “You Showed Me,” and the #1 hit, “Happy Together.”

On the 2023 edition of the “Happy Together” tour, Volman performs as the Turtles with singer Ron Dante. (Kaylan has not participated in the tour for several years.)

“Mark is one of the most indomitable yet gentle spirits I’ve ever met,” notes Alice Cooper in his foreword. “He will always be one of my favorite artists I’ve ever worked with. And someday, when I grow up, I want to be just like him.”

The People article notes, “Over time, the effects of the disease will progress into a ‘slow decline that will eventually interfere with his ability to function, says Kristen Pilote, who specializes in cognitive neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

From the publisher’s announcement: Volman , born April 19, 1947, has led a storied life, and many of those stories are contained in Happy Forever . A true son of Southern California, he has gone from topping the charts with the Turtles to underground cred with Frank Zappa and beyond. As Flo & Eddie, Volman and his long-time singing partner Howard Kaylan were the not-so-secret ingredient on many other artists’ records, taking Bruce Springsteen into the Top 10 for the very first time and helping T. Rex dominate the British charts. Then came the Ramones, U2, Blondie, Duran Duran and so many more; the list of credits is long and varied.

Alongside his own comments, the book contains contributions from more than one hundred of Volman’s peers, friends and lovers, who share their thoughts on the man himself and on topics that span the social and cultural landscape of the past half-century.

Happy Forever ’s cast list reads like a who’s who of popular music, featuring members of the Doors, the Monkees, the Byrds, the E Street Band and many more; producers Tony Visconti, Bob Ezrin, and Hal Willner; voice actors from The Simpsons and the Firesign Theatre; and key figures from the worlds of radio, animation and academia. The book also includes previously unseen photographs.

The “Happy Together” 2023 tour began on May 31, hosted by Volman and featuring performances by the Turtles, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett, the Vogues, the Classics IV and the Cowsills.

Author John Cody is a freelance musician who has toured and recorded with over two hundred artists. This is his first book.

I’m heart broken by this news 🙁 Best wishes to Mark !

So sorry to hear! The Turtles were part of the soundtrack of our lives. Thoughts and prayers for Mark.

Cisley

So sorry to hear this news. Met Mark August 31, 1969, when a couple of my friends and I had snuck into their show at Sacramento State Fair. The Strawberry Alarm Clock were on. A security guard at the show came over and was telling us to leave when Mark, out of nowhere, came over and told the guard we were with him. What a sweetie. I will never forget his kindness. We thanked him and continued enjoying the show. Those indeed were great times.

BIWJ

Sad news. Hoping that his progression is as slow as possible. In the meantime, the Turtles deserves to be in the Hall of Fame as one of the most impactful American bands of the late 60s. Nine Top 40 hits, including five in the Top 10. And great live performers. Overdue.

Pyro Pete

I saw the Turtles with many other great bands at a psychedelic Sunday concert at Molson park in Barrie Ontario Canada. They were great it was like a well polished Vegas show with all the hits and great comedy. I always wanted to see them again

SeafordMax

Saw “Flo and Eddie” many times at The Bottom Line Cabaret in Greenwich Village, especially memorable was their ‘The Fence Tour’. Their parody of Pink Floyd’s, The Wall Tour which only played in two cities due to expenses. Love live ‘The Tibetan Memory Trick’.

It was 1964 or 65, I was 15 years old, and I was going to a teen dance at the Westchester Rec Center next to LAX in LA 90045. The band playing that night was The Fireflies, and hearing them, I thought – destiny is coming to meet this group. About a year later, I was at Westchester Music on Sepulveda Bl, buying an amazing new single, by a band called the Turtles. The first concert I went to was 1964 in box seats at the Hollywood Bowl – The Beatles. These 2 concerts, following my discovery of rock and roll on the radio, Ed Sullivan Show and the Teen Fair at the Palladium, were the began my endless love of live music❣️ Will be at the Happy Together concert at the Saban Theatre, in Orch seats, on July 9th with my bffs ❤️

Its a crime against humanity that the Turtles are not in the R&R Hall of fame,

He struggled at the Happy Together Tour in Utica in July but stayed on stage and and performed. The other band members were wonderfully supportive when he struggled and the affection they all had for him was apparent. Hope we have him on stage next year.

‘Mark is one of the most indomitable yet gentle spirits I’ve ever met. He will always be one of my favorite artists I’ve ever worked with. And someday when I grow up, I want to be just like him.’ Alice Cooper

‘This book is a puzzle. The outside frame pieces are about me, but the picture wouldn’t be complete without the perspectives of all the people telling you about me.’ Mark Volman

Mark Volman has led a storied life, and many of those stories are contained in Happy Forever . A true son of Southern California, he has gone from topping the charts with The Turtles (‘Happy Together’) to underground cred with Frank Zappa and beyond. As Flo & Eddie, Mark and his longtime singing partner Howard Kaylan were the not-so-secret ingredient on many other artist’s records, taking Bruce Springsteen into the Top 10 for the very first time and helping T. Rex dominate the British charts. Then came The Ramones, U2, Blondie, Duran Duran, and so many more; the list of credits is long and varied.

Happy Forever covers all of that, along with subsequent forays into animation, a stint as a radio personality in Los Angeles and New York, and a midlife return to academia, which led Mark to create and run innovative college programs in LA and Nashville. But this is not the world according to Mark Volman, and it is not your average musical autobiography. Alongside his own comments, this uniquely insightful book contains contributions from more than one hundred of Mark’s peers, friends, and lovers who share their thoughts on the man himself and on topics that span the social and cultural landscape of past half-century.

Happy Forever ’s cast list reads like a who’s who of popular music, featuring members of The Doors, The Monkees, The Byrds, The E Street Band, and many more; producers Tony Visconti, Bob Ezrin, and Hal Willner; voice actors from The Simpsons and the Firesign Theatre; and key figures from the worlds of radio, animation, and academia. The book also includes previously unseen photographs and forewords by Alice Cooper and Chris Hillman.

About the authors In a career that has been anything but typical, Mark Volman has gone from topping the pop charts to losing the legal rights to his own name. After hitting #1 with The Turtles, Mark and singing partner Howard Kaylan (aka Flo & Eddie) had a stint with Frank Zappa & The Mothers, then went on to sing with everyone from T. Rex to The Ramones to Bruce Springsteen to Blondie, achieving cumulative sales in excess of one hundred million copies. They also enjoyed concurrent careers as voice actors and musicians in animation ( Strawberry Shortcake / Care Bears ) and as radio hosts in Los Angeles and New York, where they rubbed shoulders with Howard Stern. Then, in the biggest change of all, Mark returned to school, earning three degrees and running innovative programs in Los Angeles and Nashville. He continues to entertain every summer as host of the Happy Together tour.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

He can never get back there … Jon Bon Jovi on Thank You, Goodnight.

Thank You, Goodnight review – Bon Jovi’s surprisingly devastating ode to lost youth

There’s plenty of great stuff in this documentary to keep super fans happy – but you only need to know 80s banger Livin’ on a Prayer to get emotional as the ageing band break down before your very eyes

E very pop biography has the same dilemma: fans of the artist want to know all the details, while viewers with only a passing interest just want to get to the good stuff. You can tell which side of the line Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story falls on by looking at the running time. Its four episodes are all well over an hour long.

By far the strongest instalment is the opener, which can be watched in isolation as an evocative charge through the period leading up to the band’s formation and breakthrough. The best rockumentaries have the power to pitch us into a past moment we wish we could hang out in – the place and time here that crackles with fantastic potential is New Jersey in the back half of the 1970s.

In clubs such as the Fast Lane, the Upstage and the Stone Pony, singers including Southside Johnny and a rapidly rising Bruce Springsteen play blue-collar rock mixed with blue-eyed soul. Handsome, ambitious John Bongiovi and his nerdy pianist sidekick, David Bryan, are awestruck audience members by the age of 16, and are soon on stage themselves with their covers band, the Atlantic City Expressway. They get home from gigs in Bryan’s van at 5am, then get up again at 7am and go to high school. We’re at the peak of suburban, pre-Reagan America, with second- and third-generation immigrants settled into a life where their paychecks pay for decent everyday existences, with some fun and a few dreams on top. The documentary has enough newsreels, press clippings, reminiscences and home movies to put us right in the middle of it.

By 1983, Bongiovi has met his musical soulmate, guitarist Richie Sambora, and named himself and his new band Bon Jovi, the two-word styling a homage to (Eddie) Van Halen. Episode two tracks the group as they release a brace of reputation-building albums followed by a third LP, Slippery When Wet, that sells 14m copies. With their torn T-shirts, leather jackets and outrageous hairdos, plus a pop-metal sound that’s like Mötley Crüe with better tunes or Springsteen without the anxieties about the American Dream being a swiz, Bon Jovi tour the world relentlessly, seeing a million faces and rocking them all. The sixtysomething versions of them interviewed here still glow with the rush of it.

Bon Jovi.

Then, however, we must work our way through the band’s increasingly uninteresting post-Slippery career. It’s a catalogue of rock tropes: Bon Jovi burn out as the carefree 80s end, record solo albums, regroup, do a country album, do a stunning-return-to-form album, quietly replace their bass player with a session musician because their old pal drinks too much and can’t really play, forge a more “mature” (dull) sound, then fall out with Sambora when he fails to attend a studio session and Jon gets someone else to record his guitar parts. Lowlights include 2002’s Bounce, an LP that aimed to help the US heal after 9/11, and the album 2020, named after its year of release, which responds to Covid and Black Lives Matter and contains a song called, regrettably, American Reckoning.

Bon Jovi take themselves too seriously. At least, to us they do, but the documentary points up the tension, in an ephemeral art form, between performer and consumer. Viewers with the correct view of Bon Jovi’s oeuvre – Bad Medicine and You Give Love a Bad Name are bangers, and Livin’ on a Prayer is an almost heartbreakingly perfect work of art, but everything else is cheesy stodge – have to reckon with footage shot in 2022, behind the scenes on the band’s comeback US tour. Jon Bon Jovi, his big rock barnet now in that grey area between “still got it” and “yer nan’s had her hair done”, is outwardly the smooth CEO of the enterprise, but he can’t sing like he could before. Thousands of live shows, all of them including that reckless key change in Livin’ on a Prayer, have taken their toll. The vitamins, vocal exercises, humidifiers and laser treatments aren’t working. In interview, he breaks down as he remembers the days when he knew his band members, his crew and the 60,000 people who had bought a ticket to see Bon Jovi could rely on him to deliver a flawless performance. He can’t go back there.

Being blindsided by a surprisingly devastating rumination on lost youth bolsters the lesson you’re rewarded with if you sit through all of Thank You, Goodnight: that three-minute throwaway track you half-listen to on the radio is the culmination of somebody’s life’s work. All that life is here.

Are ‘Forever Chemicals’ a Forever Problem?

The environmental protection agency says “forever chemicals” must be removed from tap water. but they lurk in much more of what we eat, drink and use..

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise. And this is “The Daily.”

[THEME MUSIC]

This month for the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency began to regulate a class of synthetic chemicals, known as forever chemicals, in America’s drinking water. But the chemicals, which have been linked to liver disease and other serious health problems, are in far more than just our water supply. Today, my colleague Kim Tingley explains.

It’s Wednesday, April 17.

So Kim, any time the EPA announces a regulation, I think we all sort of take notice because implicit in it is this idea that we have been exposed to something — something bad, potentially, lead or asbestos. And recently, the EPA is regulating a type of chemical known as PFAS So for those who don’t know, what are PFAS chemicals

Yeah, so PFAS stands for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They’re often called forever chemicals just because they persist so long in the environment and they don’t easily break down. And for that reason, we also use them in a ton of consumer products. They’re in makeup. They’re in carpet. They’re in nonstick cookware. They’re in food packaging, all sorts of things.

Yeah, I feel like I’ve been hearing about these chemicals actually for a very long time. I mean, nonstick pans, Teflon — that’s the thing that’s in my mind when I think PFAS.

Absolutely. Yeah, this class of chemicals has been around for decades. And what’s really important about this is that the EPA has decided, for the first time, to regulate them in drinking water. And that’s a ruling that stands to affect tens of millions of people.

So, help me understand where these things came from and how it’s taken so long to get to the point where we’re actually regulating them.

So, they really actually came about a long time ago. In 1938, DuPont, the people who eventually got us to Teflon, they were actually looking for a more stable kind of refrigerant. And they came upon this kind of chemical, PFAS. The thing that all PFAS chemicals have is a really strong bond between carbon atoms and fluorine atoms. This particular pairing is super strong and super durable.

They have water repellent properties. They’re stain resistant. They’re grease resistant. And they found a lot of uses for them initially in World War II. They were using them as part of their uranium enrichment process to do all these kinds of things. And then —

Well, good thing it’s Teflon.

In the 1950s is when they really started to come out as commercial products.

Even burned food won’t stick to Teflon. So it’s always easy to clean.

So, DuPont started using it in Teflon pans.

Cookware never needs scouring if it has DuPont Teflon.

And then another company, 3M also started using a kind of PFAS —

Scotchgard fabric protector. It keeps ordinary spills from becoming extraordinary stains.

— in one of their big products, Scotchgard. So you probably remember spraying that on your shoes if you want to make your shoes waterproof.

Use Scotchgard fabric protector and let your cup runneth over.

Right — miracle product, Scotchgard, Teflon. But of course, we’re talking about these chemicals because they’ve been found to pose health threats. When does that risk start to surface?

Yeah, so it’s pretty early on that DuPont and 3M start finding effects in animals in studies that they’re running in house.

Around the mid ‘60s, they start seeing that PFAS has an effect on rats. It’s increasing the liver and kidney weights of the rats. And so that seems problematic. And they keep running tests over the next decade and a half. And they try different things with different animals.

In one study, they gave monkeys really, really high levels of PFAS. And those monkeys died. And so they have a pretty strong sense that these chemicals could be dangerous. And then in 1979, they start to see that the workers that are in the plants manufacturing, working with these chemicals, that they’re starting to have higher rates of abnormal liver function. And in a Teflon plant, they had some pregnant workers that were working with these chemicals. And one of those workers in 1981 gave birth to a child who had some pretty severe birth defects.

And then by the mid 1980s, DuPont figures out that it’s not just their workers who are being exposed to these chemicals, but communities that are living in areas surrounding their Teflon plant, particularly the one in Parkersburg, West Virginia, that those communities have PFAS in their tap water.

Wow, so based on its own studies, DuPont knows its chemicals are making animals sick. They seem to be making workers sick. And now they found out that the chemicals have made their way into the water supply. What do they do with that information?

As far as we know, they didn’t do much. They certainly didn’t tell the residents of Parkersburg who were drinking that water that there was anything that they needed to be worried about.

How is that possible? I mean, setting aside the fact that DuPont is the one actually studying the health effects of its own chemicals, presumably to make sure they’re safe, we’ve seen these big, regulating agencies like the EPA and the FDA that exist in order to watch out for something exactly like this, a company that is producing something that may be harming Americans. Why weren’t they keeping a closer watch?

Yeah, so it goes kind of back to the way that we regulate chemicals in the US. It goes through an act called the Toxic Substances Control Act that’s administered by the EPA. And basically, it gives companies a lot of room to regulate themselves, in a sense. Under this act they have a responsibility to report to the EPA if they find these kinds of potential issues with a chemical. They have a responsibility to do their due diligence when they’re putting a chemical out into the environment.

But there’s really not a ton of oversight. The enforcement mechanism is that the EPA can find them. But this kind of thing can happen pretty easily where DuPont keeps going with something that they think might really be a problem and then the fine, by the time it plays out, is just a tiny fraction of what DuPont has earned from producing these chemicals. And so really, the incentive is for them to take the punishment at the end, rather than pull it out early.

So it seems like it’s just self-reporting, which is basically self-regulation in a way.

Yeah, I think that is the way a lot of advocacy groups and experts have characterized it to me, is that chemical companies are essentially regulating themselves.

So how did this danger eventually come to light? I mean, if this is in some kind of DuPont vault, what happened?

Well, there’s a couple different things that started to happen in the late ‘90s.

The community around Parkersburg, West Virginia, people had reported seeing really strange symptoms in their animals. Cows were losing their hair. They had lesions. They were behaving strangely. Some of their calves were dying. And a lot of people in the community felt like they were having health problems that just didn’t really have a good answer, mysterious sicknesses, and some cases of cancers.

And so they initiate a class action lawsuit against DuPont. As part of that class action lawsuit, DuPont, at a certain point, is forced to turn over all of their internal documentation. And so what was in the files was all of that research that we mentioned all of the studies about — animals, and workers, the birth defects. It was really the first time that the public saw what DuPont and 3M had already seen, which is the potential health harms of these chemicals.

So that seems pretty damning. I mean, what happened to the company?

So, DuPont and 3M are still able to say these were just a few workers. And they were working with high levels of the chemicals, more than a person would get drinking it in the water. And so there’s still an opportunity for this to be kind of correlation, but not causation. There’s not really a way to use that data to prove for sure that it was PFAS that caused these health problems.

In other words, the company is arguing, look, yes, these two things exist at the same time. But it doesn’t mean that one caused the other.

Exactly. And so one of the things that this class action lawsuit demands in the settlement that they eventually reach with DuPont is they want DuPont to fund a formal independent health study of the communities that are affected by this PFAS in their drinking water. And so they want DuPont to pay to figure out for sure, using the best available science, how many of these health problems are potentially related to their chemicals.

And so they ask them to pay for it. And they get together an independent group of researchers to undertake this study. And it ends up being the first — and it still might be the biggest — epidemiological study of PFAS in a community. They’ve got about 69,000 participants in this study.

Wow, that’s big.

It’s big, yeah. And what they ended up deciding was that they could confidently say that there was what they ended up calling a probable link. And so they were really confident that the chemical exposure that the study participants had experienced was linked to high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and pregnancy induced hypertension.

And so those were the conditions that they were able to say, with a good degree of certainty, were related to their chemical exposure. There were others that they just didn’t have the evidence to reach a strong conclusion.

So overall, pretty substantial health effects, and kind of vindicates the communities in West Virginia that were claiming that these chemicals were really affecting their health.

Absolutely. And as the years have gone on, that was sort of just the beginning of researchers starting to understand all the different kinds of health problems that these chemicals could potentially be causing. And so since the big DuPont class action study, there’s really just been like this building and building and building of different researchers coming out with these different pieces of evidence that have accumulated to a pretty alarming picture of what some of the potential health outcomes could be.

OK, so that really kind of brings us to the present moment, when, at last, it seems the EPA is saying enough is enough. We need to regulate these things.

Yeah, it seems like the EPA has been watching this preponderance of evidence accumulate. And they’re sort of deciding that it’s a real health problem, potentially, that they need to regulate.

So the EPA has identified six of these PFAS chemicals that it’s going to regulate. But the concern that I think a lot of experts have is that this particular regulation is not going to keep PFAS out of our bodies.

We’ll be right back.

So, Kim, you just said that these regulations probably won’t keep PFAS chemicals out of our bodies. What did you mean?

Well, the EPA is talking about regulating these six kinds of PFAS. But there are actually more than 10,000 different kinds of PFAS that are already being produced and out there in the environment.

And why those six, exactly? I mean, is it because those are the ones responsible for most of the harm?

Those are the ones that the EPA has seen enough evidence about that they are confident that they are probably causing harm. But it doesn’t mean that the other ones are not also doing something similar. It’s just sort of impossible for researchers to be able to test each individual chemical compound and try to link it to a health outcome.

I talked to a lot of researchers who were involved in this area and they said that they haven’t really seen a PFAS that doesn’t have a harm, but they just don’t have information on the vast majority of these compounds.

So in other words, we just haven’t studied the rest of them enough yet to even know how harmful they actually are, which is kind of alarming.

Yeah, that’s right. And there’s just new ones coming out all the time.

Right. OK, so of the six that the EPA is actually intending to regulate, though, are those new regulations strict enough to keep these chemicals out of our bodies?

So the regulations for those six chemicals really only cover getting them out of the drinking water. And drinking water only really accounts for about 20 percent of a person’s overall PFAS exposure.

So only a fifth of the total exposure.

Yeah. There are lots of other ways that you can come into contact with PFAS. We eat PFAS, we inhale PFAS. We rub it on our skin. It’s in so many different products. And sometimes those products are not ones that you would necessarily think of. They’re in carpets. They’re in furniture. They’re in dental floss, raincoats, vinyl flooring, artificial turf. All kinds of products that you want to be either waterproof or stain resistant or both have these chemicals in them.

So, the cities and towns are going to have to figure out how to test for and monitor for these six kinds of PFAS. And then they’re also going to have to figure out how to filter them out of the water supply. I think a lot of people are concerned that this is going to be just a really expensive endeavor, and it’s also not really going to take care of the entire problem.

Right. And if you step back and really look at the bigger problem, the companies are still making these things, right? I mean, we’re running around trying to regulate this stuff at the end stage. But these things are still being dumped into the environment.

Yeah. I think it’s a huge criticism of our regulatory policy. There’s a lot of onus put on the EPA to prove that a harm has happened once the chemicals are already out there and then to regulate the chemicals. And I think that there’s a criticism that we should do things the other way around, so tougher regulations on the front end before it goes out into the environment.

And that’s what the European Union has been doing. The European Chemicals Agency puts more of the burden on companies to prove that their products and their chemicals are safe. And the European Chemicals Agency is also, right now, considering just a ban on all PFAS products.

So is that a kind of model, perhaps, of what a tough regulation could look like in the US?

There’s two sides to that question. And the first side is that a lot of people feel like it would be better if these chemical companies had to meet a higher standard of proof in terms of demonstrating that their products or their chemicals are going to be safe once they’ve been put out in the environment.

The other side is that doing that kind of upfront research can be really expensive and could potentially limit companies who are trying to innovate in that space. In terms of PFAS, specifically, this is a really important chemical for us. And a lot of the things that we use it in, there’s not necessarily a great placement at the ready that we can just swap in. And so it’s used in all sorts of really important medical devices or renewable energy industries or firefighting foam.

And in some cases, there are alternatives that might be safer that companies can use. But in other cases, they just don’t have that yet. And so PFAS is still really important to our daily lives.

Right. And that kind of leaves us in a pickle because we know these things might be harming us. Yet, we’re kind of stuck with them, at least for now. So, let me just ask you this question, Kim, which I’ve been wanting to ask you since the beginning of this episode, which is, if you’re a person who is concerned about your exposure to PFAS, what do you do?

Yeah. So this is really tricky and I asked everybody this question who I talked to. And everybody has a little bit of a different answer based on their circumstance. For me what I ended up doing was getting rid of the things that I could sort of spot and get rid of. And so I got rid of some carpeting and I checked, when I was buying my son a raincoat, that it was made by a company that didn’t use PFAS.

It’s also expensive. And so if you can afford to get a raincoat from a place that doesn’t manufacture PFAS, it’s going to cost more than if you buy the budget raincoat. And so it’s kind of unfair to put the onus on consumers in that way. And it’s also just not necessarily clear where exactly your exposure is coming from.

So I talk to people who said, well, it’s in dust, so I vacuum a lot. Or it’s in my cleaning products, so I use natural cleaning products. And so I think it’s really sort of a scattershot approach that consumers can take. But I don’t think that there is a magic approach that gets you a PFAS-free life.

So Kim, this is pretty dark, I have to say. And I think what’s frustrating is that it feels like we have these government agencies that are supposed to be protecting our health. But when you drill down here, the guidance is really more like you’re on your own. I mean, it’s hard not to just throw up your hands and say, I give up.

Yeah. I think it’s really tricky to try to know what you do with all of this information as an individual. As much as you can, you can try to limit your individual exposure. But it seems to me as though it’s at a regulatory level that meaningful change would happen, and not so much throwing out your pots and pans and getting new ones.

One thing about PFAS is just that we’re in this stage still of trying to understand exactly what it’s doing inside of us. And so there’s a certain amount of research that has to happen in order to both convince people that there’s a real problem that needs to be solved, and clean up what we’ve put out there. And so I think that we’re sort of in the middle of that arc. And I think that that’s the point at which people start looking for solutions.

Kim, thank you.

Here’s what else you should know today. On Tuesday, in day two of jury selection for the historic hush money case against Donald Trump, lawyers succeeded in selecting 7 jurors out of the 12 that are required for the criminal trial after failing to pick a single juror on Monday.

Lawyers for Trump repeatedly sought to remove potential jurors whom they argued were biased against the president. Among the reasons they cited were social media posts expressing negative views of the former President and, in one case, a video posted by a potential juror of New Yorkers celebrating Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. Once a full jury is seated, which could come as early as Friday, the criminal trial is expected to last about six weeks.

The Environmental Protection Agency has begun for the first time to regulate a class of synthetic chemicals known as “forever chemicals” in America’s drinking water.

Kim Tingley, a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, explains how these chemicals, which have been linked to liver disease and other serious health problems, came to be in the water supply — and in many more places.
