Jay-Z, Eminem, and their hip-hop super friends bring 'Home and Home' tour to Yankee Stadium

Image Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com“Let’s go, Yankees,” chanted fans last night in the Bronx, New York, home of Major League Baseball’s defending champions. But they weren’t there to see Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez smash it out of the park. The sold-out crowd filled the new Yankee Stadium to see two of hip-hop’s greatest and most accomplished talents, Eminem and native son Jay-Z , bring the young venue its first show. Two weeks ago, the combo kicked off the first half of their Home and Home mini-tour at Detroit’s Comerica Park. There Em, was the night’s closer. But on Monday night, he set things off.

The chants flipped to cheers when Em’s spacey intro began on the jumbo screen. Like Star Wars movies begin–with a storyline text appearing as we travel across the galaxy–so did his, chronicling his heavily covered road from troubled drug addict to sobriety. “You are here to witness,” it concluded, “Eminem’s RECOVERY.”

In a black tee, shorts, and a matching hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, Em crept on stage to “ Won’t Back Down ,” rapping with fierce intensity. As he spit on the track, “Shady’s got the mass appeal.” And was apparent. From jump, fans made the Motor City rhymer feel right at home, rapping along word-for-word.

“Politically correct” and Eminem don’t go together. Animations of a redneck with a mullet and his beat-up car were met with laughs when he performed “W.T.P. (White Trash Party).” His fans are a different kind of breed—a more twisted bunch who somehow relate to some of his most violent and mortifying lyrics like, “B—-, I’mma kill you” from the aptly titled “Kill You.” And they obeyed his command to raise their middle fingers and say, “F— you, momma!” before he launched into “ Cleanin’ Out My Closet .” After a brief set with his group D12, B.o.B , who opened the show, came back out to perform his “Airplanes” alongside Em, but that guest appearance was just a warm up for what was to come.

Find out who the other surprises were and how Jay-Z did after the jump.

In a Gucci jacket and red Yankees cap, 50 Cent popped out to perform their collaboration “Patiently Waiting” from the Queens, NY native’s 2003 debut. 50 took over from there, bringing out his G-Unit for “In Da Club” and darkening the stage to show that his jacket and hat lit up. But Em’s last guest was his biggest: Dr. Dre . Halfway through name-checking the iconic producer of “My Name Is,” Dre strolled out, brawny in a black tee shirt to perform his classics “Still D.R.E.” and “ Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang .” After promising that his oft-delayed Detox album “is coming” without declaring any finite date, he left. The crowd went nuts. Though it’s more than a decade in the making, they still believe it will be worth the wait. Then it was back to Em.

Winding down his set, he performed his 2002 cut “ Without Me .” To follow Eminem’s career is to also take a journey through pop culture; his songs are littered with references to dead pop groups like ‘N Sync and the Spice Girls and past presidents like Clinton and Bush. At 37, it’s hard to believe he’s been round so long. It shows hip-hop isn’t a young man’s sport. Like in other genres, the best age gracefully and their value appreciates. Em closed with “Not Afraid,” but noticing that he hadn’t treated the stadium to one of his biggest hits, an encore was in order. He returned to perform his inspirational “Lose Yourself.”

On “Without Me,” he rapped, “Now this looks like a job for me/ So everybody, just follow me/ Cause we need a little, controversy/ Cause it feels so empty, without me.” During his four-year absence, his presence was missed. Now back on the straight and narrow, the controversy may not be as great. That’s a good thing. With the show he gave, why would we want anybody else but this him?

“I missed you motherf——,” he said before leaving the stage. “Did you miss me?” Deafening screams confirmed they did. For a second, it seemed like it was going to be a hard act to follow for Jay-Z to follow. I should’ve know better.

Check out how Jay did after the jump.

Wearing a black leather jacket, sunglasses, and matching everything else, Jay hit the stage just shy of 11pm performing his “Dynasty Intro,” a cult favorite. It wasn’t even three minutes into the show before chants of “Hova!” filled the stadium. Backed by his band, the Roc Boys, Jay, 40, didn’t hesitate to pull out the big guns early. After rapping his second verse on “ Run This Town ,” Kanye West , in a red leather blazer, matching pants, and a cheetah print shirt launched out to spit his verse. What followed was a mini-set of Jay and West. The pair ran through West’s “Power” remix and even brought out Nicki Minaj for “ Monster .” Then Jay let his little brother rock on his own with “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Good Life.” Kanye tripped over some of his lyrics, but the crowd loved it just the same.

Producer and hypeman extraordinaire Swizz Beatz ran on for “ On to the Next One .” While Eminem returned for their “Renegade” duet. After a commemorative segment to fallen rap icons like the Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Guru, and more, Jay asked the crowd to “Put up your diamonds in the air. I like the way that looked.” Then “P.S.A.” rang out of the speakers.

When time came to do “Heart of the City,” one of Jay’s of most introspective songs, he brought out close friend and Coldplay leading man Chris Martin to massive cheers. Then Martin got on the piano to play a riff of his “ Clocks ” as Jay used his “Most Kingz” verse to rhyme over it. Martin closed his visit with one of his band’s biggest hits: “ Viva La Vida .” From end to end, the audience quaked singing the song’s harmonious hook.

As if asking randomly, Jay requested that his DJ to “give me anything.” The instrumental for Drake ’s “ Miss Me ” was the pick. And like clockwork, the rap prince—also dressed all in black—jumped out for a surprise. The two performed Drake’s “Light Up” for the first time as well. Just when the crowd caught their collective breaths, Jay’s wife, pop queen Beyoncé joined him. In a black sequined dress, she glided downstairs to meet her man for “ Young Forever .” “That girl bad,” Jay said as she walked off. “That girl tough! S—!” The show basically concluded with his hometown homage, “Empire State of Mind.” Though Jay managed to cram in several other classics like “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” and “Encore” to the delight of many.

Proud of himself, Jay said, “Damn, I’m so cool. I’m so cool it’s not even f——‘ fair.” And then he asked the crowd for one last favor: “Make some noise!” Of course they did. Yeah, he’s cool. But the best way to describe this night was legendary. “This is a historic night,” Jay said earlier in the evening. “There will never be another night like this.” Hip-hop, birthed in that very Bronx borough 30-something years ago on street corners, had it’s inaugural showing at Yankee Stadium—home base on its most grand scale. Historic, indeed.

The Home and Home finale is tonight at Yankee Stadium. Will you be there tonight? Have you seen Jay or Em perform before? Was it the best hip-hop show ever? Let us know.

home and home tour eminem

By Jon Caramanica

  • Sept. 14, 2010

When you’ve run out of peaks, all that’s left are ridiculous, sublime stunts, new ways to climb old mountains.

And so, two songs into Jay-Z’s set at Yankee Stadium on Monday night, there was Kanye West, not 24 hours removed from his triumphantly callous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, and possibly still wearing the same red suit, though here with a leopard-print shirt underneath.

For Jay-Z to inaugurate the new Yankee Stadium as a concert hall: uninteresting. Playing for tens of thousands of hometown fans: been there. The ability to move famous people across the country on extremely short turnaround in the interest of pageantry and vanity: well, that’s something.

Unleashing Mr. West so early in the night was Jay-Z’s truly perverse move, though. He’s so secure in his stature, his invincibility, that allowing his set to be interrupted before it found a rhythm only highlighted his power. When Mr. West left the stage, having performed a quick string of hits and new material — including “Monster,” which also featured another express-mailed guest, Nicki Minaj — Jay-Z remained, emboldened, his first trick of several complete.

He had home-turf advantage on this shared bill with Eminem, the “Home and Home Tour.” Jay-Z headlined here in the first of two nights at Yankee Stadium, after Eminem was the headliner at a pair of shows earlier this month at Comerica Park in Detroit, Eminem’s hometown.

The order matters, because Jay-Z and Eminem have carved out two astonishingly different versions of hip-hop superstardom. Jay-Z is a conduit to celebrate triumph, a master of bravado, laughter and ease; Eminem is a vessel for remembering pain, a symbol of challenges overcome, of dark clouds always looming.

Onstage here, both largely subscribed to the fashion ethos of “all black everything.” But for Jay-Z, it meant slick minimalism, a deliberate stroke of style, whereas for Eminem, it was utilitarian, a means of negation.

In this context, Jay-Z’s performing last felt like rescue. Plus, in New York, Eminem was no match for Jay-Z’s specificity, the intangible quality that allows songs to resonate more powerfully in one baseball stadium than in another several states away. It’s the thing that makes “Big Pimpin’,” Jay-Z’s most committed foray into the style of Southern hip-hop, actually the soundtrack of New York rap triumphalism. It’s what makes Jay-Z’s verse from Mya’s “Best of Me” remix as powerful as the bombastic smash “99 Problems,” even the frazzled version played here by Jay-Z’s backing band.

It wasn’t all miracles for Jay-Z, though. Not even Beyoncé, staggeringly radiant, could save the dour “Young Forever.” And “Light Up,” a collaboration with the young star Drake — who also caught a flight from Los Angeles for this show — felt small, but not intimate.

View Slide Show ›

A telling moment during his set came when Eminem re-emerged, rather quietly, to perform their collaboration, “Renegade.” On record, it’s two titans squaring off, but here it felt like two giants conscious of each other’s space. And sonically, it was a moody obstacle; it would have fit much better into Eminem’s set, where it was in the Detroit show.

In his performance Eminem worked hard, a combustion engine vibrating at full throttle, and did an impressive job of making what is essentially deeply technical, deeply insular art appear spacious and arena-worthy. (Of the two stars, only Eminem, the ardent student, acknowledged that he was performing in the Bronx, hip-hop’s birthplace.)

But kicking his old drug habit has given Eminem his own brand of calm, too. He went for long stretches without blinking, a model of intensity. He danced around the stage, seemingly having fun even with his grimmest songs.

And there were plenty of those. Eminem’s earliest hits may have been emotionally and socially toxic, but they were sprightly. The distance between his early and recent work is vast, though, the crisp cheer of Dr. Dre’s old production a far cry from the muddled sounds that have overtaken his last two albums. “Sing for the Moment,” from 2002, felt like the turning point, with its maudlin sample of Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” and here it hit with an awkward clang, though not as roughly as chaotic and unfriendly songs like “Cinderella Man.” That’s from Eminem’s latest, “Recovery” (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope), an unfocused album full of gristle that’s been one of this year’s most commercially resilient releases.

“Love the Way You Lie,” his current single, is one of the album’s most engaging songs, an empathetic number about relationship dysfunction that suggests that in the years since his joyful wife-bashing songs, Eminem has learned to see problems from both sides.

But here he followed it immediately with “My Name Is,” his first big single and one of his goofiest and most endearing songs: the Eminem of then blissfully undercutting the Eminem of now.

Soon after, he was joined by his mentor, Dr. Dre — “I want you to feel how much these people love you,” Eminem told him, punctuating the statement with sharper language — and his protégé 50 Cent. It made for a family affair, a circle of trust.

By comparison, Jay-Z’s guest list was expansive and wasn’t afraid of tweaking the audience or even the star himself, especially when the aspirated singing on the chorus of “Heart of the City (Ain’t No Love)” turned out to be coming from the mouth of Chris Martin, of Coldplay. It was surprisingly effective, and not only because it was a surprise.

Afterward came a medley of Jay-Z’s “Most Kingz” and Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” and with Jay-Z’s urging, a stadium full of rap fans were un-self-consciously singing along to a Coldplay song.

“Coldplay in the building!” he screamed — it surely was. And then, just as surely, Jay-Z made it disappear again.

Foster the People Build ‘Houdini’ Super Track With New Dua Lipa, Eminem Songs

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Legend has it that if you stand in the mirror and say “Houdini” three times, Foster the People will appear out of thin air and play “Houdini x Houdini x Houdini,” their mashup of their own song “Houdini” with Dua Lipa ‘s single “Houdini,” and Eminem ‘s new single — also titled “ Houdini .” The other option, if for some reason the idea of Foster the People spawning in your home is unsettling, is to hear it on Instagram, where the band shared a breakdown showing their process of combining the three songs.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Foster The People (@fosterthepeople)

“There’s two ‘Houdini’s on the radio right now, one from Eminem, one from Dua Lipa ,” frontman Mark Foster says in the video. “Thought it’d be fun to bring in our OG ‘Houdini’ from our first record and you know, mash the three of them up together.”

Dua Lipa’s “Houdini” appeared on her latest album Radical Optimism , while Eminem released his “Houdini” as the lead single to his upcoming album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), out July 12. Foster the People’s “Houdini” arrived in 2011 when the band released their debut album, Torches. It became the fifth single from the record, following “Pumped Up Kicks,” “Helena Beat,” “Call It What You Want,” and “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls).”

Foster the People will release their long-awaited fourth studio album, Paradise State of Mind , on Aug. 16.

Fresh off announcing a July 12 release date for his upcoming album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce),” Eminem is showing love for his hometown with his new single “Tobey” featuring fellow Detroiters Big Sean and Babytron.

Fans were perplexed when the track didn’t drop at the assumed midnight hour, but he officially released it 12 hours later. Right down to the single cover art, which riffs off a Spider-Man meme, “Tobey” refers to the comic franchise and one of its film stars. “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider but see, me? It was a goat,” begins the track.

Related stories, regulators shouldn’t blow the whistle on venu sports just yet, documentary on gerry goffin, carole king’s songwriting partner and ex-husband, in production (exclusive).

The verse is likely inspired by comments that Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 made last year, claiming that the only reason that Eminem is considered top five is because he’s white. Em addressed this on a subsequent feature on Ez Mil’s “Realest,” which dropped in August. Still, he elaborates on “Tobey”: “So when I get dissed though by a pioneer who is one of the reasons why I am here / They tell me that I should just let the shit go and slide / Melle Mel shouldn’t get no reply, that man is a legend / Bitch, so am I.”

On Monday afternoon, the rapper revealed that “The Death of Slim Shady” will arrive next week. To help make the announcement, he posted a trailer video on his socials showing a woman giving birth to a devil baby.

Em has been teasing “The Death of Slim Shady” since April , when he appeared at the NFL Draft and simultaneously dropped a trailer revealing that his twelfth studio album would come this summer. The video was shot in the style of “Unsolved Mysteries,” and suggested that this project would mark the final act for his career-long alter ego Slim Shady.

Little is known about “The Death of Slim Shady,” other than the fact that Dr. Dre likely had a hand in producing the album. Luis Resto, one of Eminem’s longtime producers, manned the boards for “Houdini.”

'Detroit Really Felt Like Home': Jake Bates Felt Strong Support

John maakaron | jul 1, 2024.

Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates

  • Detroit Lions

New Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates had the unique experience of quickly becoming a fan-favorite of a fanbase before actually joining the team.

A sensation in the UFL, Bates endeared himself to the Lions ' fanbase throughout his stint with the Michigan Panthers. Because the Panthers played their home games at Ford Field, there was plenty of overlap between fans of the UFL squad and Lions supporters.

As a result, when Bates went viral for nailing multiple kicks from 60-plus yards out, Lions fans clamored for leadership to add him to the kicker competition. He felt the love from the supporters, and signed with the team at the end of the UFL campaign.

"Detroit really felt like home, even outside of all that stuff. It just felt good," said Bates. "And, there's no real feeling, there's no real words to describe what that feeling is. It just felt good there. The people there were awesome. Obviously, can't let yourself listen to that too much, because you never know. But no, it was awesome. My dad and my my brothers and my mom, they would come to games and see the fans or the fans online. Them and my friends had a little bit more fun with all that stuff than I did. I definitely felt the love, and I'm super, super excited to be in such a football-heavy city that loves the Lions and supports the Lions. And, I just can't wait to be a part of it."

Bates finished the year 21-of-28 on field-goal attempts, with three makes of over 60 yards. One of those makes was a game-winning 64-yard boot in the Panthers' season opener, which doubled as his first field-goal attempt.

Because the Lions have struggled to find stability at the kicking position following the departure of Matt Prater, fans clamored to bring Bates into the fold after witnessing his leg strength.

The excitement generated by his arrival has only fed into the palpable buzz surrounding the direction of the organization heading into the 2024 campaign.

"I think just when you walk into the building, just the feel of it, the culture that the coaching staff has brought in and just the buzz around the city, the excitement for the team," Bates explained. "I mean, there's so many things, so many intangible things that I think go into it with the feeling around the Lions right now.

"Obviously, last season was awesome for them," Bates commented further. "And, I just can't wait to get up there and help in any way I can to hopefully do well for this city and have a lot of fun doing it with a really good team."

Represented by veteran agent Marty Magid of MRM Sports, several factors, including overall comfort, guided his decision to join Detroit's roster .

"There was a lot of things that that went into it," said Bates. "There's a whole whole thing that after everything that happened, and we went through that whole process. My agent and I sat down, and he was super helpful through everything. There's just, there's a bunch of different things, and every situation is different. And so, that's just where we felt most most at home, most comfortable. And, that's where, ultimately, we decided to go, and and there is no turning back. I'm super excited for it."

Bates reportedly also had interest from the Packers and Commanders after the Panthers' season concluded.

With the Lions, Bates will join a wide-open kicking competition with incumbent Michael Badgley, who has spent parts of the last two years as the team's kicker . Overall, Badgley has made 27-of-31 attempts in a Lions uniform.

The latest "Lone Wolves" podcast features a conversation with Bates , where he discusses how he ended up in Detroit, his experience with the Panthers and his mindset heading into training camp this summer.

She just moved into a neighborhood of 3D printed homes in Texas — see what it's like inside

  • Daniella Glaeze documents her 3D printed home on TikTok, amassing millions of views.
  • Icon and Lennar are building a community of 100 3D printed houses just north of Austin.
  • The homes, made with "lavacrete" and featuring biophilic designs, offer energy efficiency.

Insider Today

3D printed houses may sound like they're from a future filled with hoverboards and holograms. But for Daniella Glaeze, she's already living it.

Glaeze began documenting her 3D printed home on TikTok shortly after moving into it in April. Her videos showing off the futuristic concrete house have garnered several million views — and questions.

"I'm definitely excited to bring some of this content to viewers and anyone interested in seeing the process and how these homes work," Glaeze told Business Insider.

"Homes," plural, because it's not just their house — it's a whole neighborhood. 3D printing construction startup Icon teamed up with home construction giant Lennar to build a community of 100 3D printed houses , called the Wolf Ranch, just north of Austin.

According to Icon, 95 of the homes already have their wall systems printed and all 100 are expected to be complete by 2025, but residents like Glaeze have already begun to move in.

First-time homeowners Glaeze and her husband, who are both software engineers, became interested after seeing some of these houses on TikTok.

"We're both in tech, so we know the type of engineering and innovation that goes into creating something like this, so we were really intrigued," Glaeze said.

The homes are built using a massive gantry-style printer, called the Vulcan Construction System, which spans 45.5 feet wide and 15.5 feet tall.

In one TikTok with over 4 million views, Glaeze toured her home, which has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a garage. Several commenters were worried about the potential of grime settling in the ribbed wall ridges, one writing, "I can't stop thinking about all the dust that would collect on the walls."

@life_0f_dani Replying to @Andrea Salazar what does the inside of a finished 3d printed house look like? let me show you 🫶🏼 leave me decor suggestions pleaseeee #3dprinting #home #3dprinted #3dprintedhouse ♬ original sound - daniella

However, Glaeze reassured that despite the unmistakable grooves, she had yet to encounter any dust build-up. She said that a wipe or handheld vacuum has gotten the job done.

"The ridges on the wall are not like little shelves, they're very thin," she said. "Even if dust were to collect, I don't think it'd be very noticeable, and the walls are very easy to clean, honestly."

Related stories

The simple solution seemed to be mirrored in most of her responses to other questions people brought up. Yes, you can hang things on the wall using a concrete bit. Yes, you can paint the walls with an airbrush. And yes, you can make the walls flat by sanding or using plaster.

"The walls are the only thing that are concrete and printed in the foundation," Glaeze said. "Everything else, like the electricity, the roof, the doors — they're all like a traditional home."

In fact, the only issue she has come across has been a spotty WiFi connection due to the thick concrete material, which she has combated with a WiFi booster.

So why print your home?

"My favorite thing about living in a 3D printed house is really the aesthetic," Glaeze said. "I think it's really cool; it's something new that's also different and innovative. "

Icon, which codesigned the homes with architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group, told Business Insider that aside from added structural support, 3D printing offers architectural freedom that would be far more expensive with traditional construction. They particularly lean into biophilic designs that include more organic forms with rounded edges and curves, the company said.

Glaze said she loves how the curved walls make "the whole house feel very seamless and clean" and has been experimenting with different light fixtures that "reflect really cool with the layers."

"It's really cool to see how people get creative with decorating the home," she said. "I have a neighbor who's playing with different light and textures and abstract art that pops off the walls."

Glaeze also said the thick concrete material, dubbed "lavacrete" by Icon, is not only well-insulated to keep temperatures cool against the Texas heat, but has also been "really sturdy" against rainstorms and outside noise.

"They have a lot of drills and heavy machinery outside, and I don't hear anything," she said. "I am sensitive to super loud sounds so being in this house is so quiet and so peaceful."

Icon said its wall systems had been tested against hurricane standard winds and also announced in March a new formulation of lavacrete called CarbonX, a lower carbon emission cement material that will be used for the remaining wall systems.

3D printing promises to be cheaper — soon

While one of Glaeze's biggest incentives for moving in was the house's "really good interest rate," the actual price is pretty on par with other properties in the area.

Since the homes in this neighborhood are being sold by Lennar, their pricing is dictated by the current market, Icon said. According to the company's website , the homes range from $425,000 to $585,000.

However, Icon said that homeowners have reported lower lifecycle costs and utility bills due to higher energy efficiencies. It also said 3D printing offers lower construction costs and faster development.

According to the company, its robotic system typically requires two people to operate, and each wall system in Wolf Ranch took, on average, two weeks to complete.

"One thing that Icon told me is they do want to combat the housing crisis," Glaeze said. "They want to have more affordable and efficient homes."

Floods, fires and record heat: Climate disasters multiply around the world

California is far from the only place in the grip of a sweltering heat wave. Climate catastrophes have been unfolding around the globe.

With nearly every month of 2024 having been the warmest on record, the world may be living through the hottest year yet.

One reason behind the extraordinary heat is a particularly powerful bout of El Niño , a natural climate phenomenon marked by warmer-than-usual waters in the tropical Pacific.

El Niño is now receding, but the human-made factors of global warming have not, and many scientists say that the world is now well on its way to blazing past the preferred allowance set by the Paris climate accord — 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above preindustrial baselines.

Women wade through the muddy brown waters on a flooded street, near buses and storefronts

“The climate continues to alarm us — the last 12 months have broken records like never before,” Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, said last month.

“Until we reach net-zero global emissions the climate will continue to warm, will continue to break records, and will continue to produce even more extreme weather events.”

Some recent lowlights:

Lethal heat in India

This year’s heat wave in India has killed more than 100 people over 3½ months, according to government data obtained by the Associated Press.

Among the dead were 33 polling workers administering the country’s general elections in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in early June, when temperatures in some cities reached as high as 116 degrees.

An elderly woman is carried on a stretcher into a hospital in India.

Families of the deceased will each receive about $18,000 from the government, Navdeep Rinwa, chief electoral officer for Uttar Pradesh state, told reporters.

Up to 75% of India’s workforce — around 380 million people — work in heat-exposed conditions , according to a recent World Bank report, but fewer than 10% of the country’s 300 million households own air conditioners.

In Lucknow, a city in northern India, temperatures this year have regularly climbed as high as 113 degrees, leading to power outages from the increased demand in electricity.

“How can the electricity department justify depriving us of essential sleep?” resident Abhishek Singh told The Times of India in May.

“We have jobs to attend to, and the lack of rest will undoubtedly impact our mental well-being.”

China hit with heat, drought and floods

Broiling heat, droughts and flooding have threatened agriculture and energy supply in China. Beijing issued its third-highest heat warning late last month.

As temperatures reached 104 degrees in parts of the country’s north, areas in the south were hit by record-breaking rains, leading to the evacuation of thousands.

A barefoot woman, using a scarf to shield from the sun, sits on a bench.

Flooding has claimed at least 15 lives in the last month across Hunan, Anhui and Guangdong provinces, according to state media, and the government has issued alerts for additional flooding across the country.

Meanwhile, Yunnan province in the south is experiencing its worst drought in six decades, threatening the country’s supply of grains and hydropower.

Flooding in the U.S. swallows up homes

Flooding in several states across the Midwest has destroyed public infrastructure and swallowed up homes.

In May, torrential rainfall in the Midwest brought eight times the typical volume of rain seen in the region, overpowering flood defenses, submerging homes and leading to at least two deaths.

After the partial failure of a 114-year-old dam in Minnesota unleashed a flood that swept away a home perched on the banks of the Blue Earth River, local officials demolished a popular local pie store that they feared might be next.

A bird's-eye view of submerged farmland

In South Dakota , where Gov. Kristi Noem declared an emergency, floodwaters stranded drivers and necessitated the rescue of nine people in Sioux Falls.

“This is probably the first time we’ve seen this kind of rainfall come this quickly,” Noem said at a news conference.

Flooding of the Big Sioux River caused a railroad bridge to Iowa to collapse.

In Iowa , where more than 1,000 residents have been displaced and entire neighborhoods evacuated, Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster and requested federal assistance.

“Businesses are shuttered, main streets have been impacted,” she said at a news conference late last month. “Hospitals, nursing homes and other care facilities were evacuated.”

‘Heat dome’ over Mexico kills people, wildlife

Scorching heat in Mexico has already killed at least 125 people this year, according to the country’s health ministry.

A woman with white hair, in a dress with blue patterns, holds a small towel to her forehead while seated on a bed

Although the immediate cause is a “heat dome” — a weather phenomenon in which high pressure traps hot air underneath it like a pot lid does to steam — climate scientists from the global collective World Weather Attribution have said that climate change has probably made Mexico’s heat wave much worse.

Last month, the country recorded its hottest day ever, with temperatures in the Sonoran Desert reaching 125 degrees. In the southeastern state of Tabasco, monkeys have been dropping dead from trees, presumably from heatstroke.

“We have never before experienced a heat wave this intense, this powerful, this pervasive and this persistent,” Maria Teresa Mendoza, a Veracruz resident, told the Associated Press.

Torrential downpours and wildfires devastate Chile

Several regions in Chile declared a state of “catastrophe” in June, as heavy rains battered homes and flooded roads in the latest extreme weather event to hit the South American country. About 2,000 homes were damaged and 60,000 lost power, while one person died.

The severe downpours and flooding followed an unusual cold snap that saw the coolest May since 1950, according to the country’s meteorological agency.

Two people, one in a yellow rain jacket, stand on a flooded street outside homes

This year, the country also experienced its deadliest wildfires on record.

While wildfires often occur in February, experts said that rising temperatures and high winds exacerbated the fire’s spread, killing more than 130 people. The worsening heat has contributed to a years-long drought in central Chile that has affected the nation’s water supplies and crops.

Record temperatures roast the East Coast

As cities along the East Coast all grappled with record-breaking heat recently, temperatures in the nation’s capital hit 100 degrees — the first time they have reached triple digits since 2016.

Officials issued a heat emergency and activated the city’s 134 cooling centers, which include swimming pools, public libraries and youth centers.

A man holds a hand to a young girl's face with a white-pillared building in the background

“Residents and visitors are encouraged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses and to check on neighbors,” the mayor’s office said in a June 21 news release.

“Vulnerable populations, including older adults and those with physical and mental health conditions, should limit their time outdoors to no more than 20 minutes per hour.”

Temperatures in Baltimore reached 101 degrees, surpassing its previous daily high of 100 degrees in 1988.

Hikers die due to heat in Greece

Nearly a dozen tourists have died this year after going on hikes in Greece — a trend that the country’s authorities have attributed to the disorienting effects of heat.

A helicopter dumps water over hazy, smoke-filled landscape

“There is a common pattern,” Petros Vassilakis, the police spokesman for the southern Aegean, told Reuters. “They all went for a hike amid high temperatures.”

The heat, which reached 111 degrees in some areas, also contributed to more than 40 wildfires late last month.

Wildfires are common in Greece but have intensified in recent years as climate change makes summers hotter and drier.

In Keratea, south of Athens, 140 firefighters have been mobilized to curb the latest blaze, which destroyed at least four houses, according to local media. In the north, residents were told to evacuate after another fire broke out in the region.

A holy site becomes a death trap

A total of 1,301 visitors to Mecca on the Hajj, a Muslim ritual that entails several days of religious tours, have died as temperatures hit a record 125 degrees in Saudi Arabia’s holy city.

“The Hajj has operated in a hot climate for over a millennium, but the climate crisis is exacerbating these conditions,” Carl-Friedrich Schleussner of the think tank Climate Analytics told Reuters.

A sea of people holding colorful umbrellas

With official pilgrimage packages for the Hajj costing $10,000 or more, the Saudi government has said that more than 80% of the dead were unlicensed pilgrims who “walked long distances under direct sunlight, without adequate shelter or comfort.”

Many train for the pilgrimages, which involve walking up to nine miles in the open sun. But those without official licenses lack access to air-conditioned spaces or water.

Record-breaking Hurricane Beryl rips through the Carribbean

At least six people have died after Hurricane Beryl cut a devastating swath through the Caribbean, capsizing fishing boats, downing power lines and ripping the roofs off homes.

“The situation is grim,” Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said at a news conference Tuesday. “There is no power, and there is almost complete destruction of homes and buildings on the island. The roads are not passable, and in many instances they are cut off because of the large quantity of debris strewn all over the streets.”

People working on the upper level of a home with a damaged roof, with palm trees blowing

No storm in the Atlantic has achieved Category 5 status as early as Beryl did on Monday. It has been downgraded to a Category 4 with 155-mph winds as it heads to Jamaica.

“I am encouraging all Jamaicans to take the hurricane as a serious threat,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Monday.

Waters in the Atlantic have been much warmer than usual since last year, lending themselves to more powerful and rapidly escalating storms. And Beryl, according to experts, probably signals a particularly vicious season of tropical storms ahead.
