©TOKYO TOWER

A bright beacon in a sprawling metropolis

Seeing the bold red and white stripes of Tokyo Tower will tell you that you have, at last, arrived in Metropolitan Tokyo.

Tokyo Tower is both an active broadcasting facility and an ideal spot for travelers to take in the dazzling cityscape below. The structure's modernist charm can be appreciated from the outside as it lights up at night, but the real thrill comes as you climb to the top to catch dynamic views of the city.

At the base of the tower, you'll find a shopping complex called Foot Town, which features an array of international shops and restaurants.

How to Get There

Tokyo Tower is conveniently located. To get there, hop on the Mita Subway Line and get off at Onarimon Station. Alternatively, take the Hibiya Subway Line to Kamiyacho or the Oedo Subway Line to Akabanebashi. The tower is about a five-minute walk from each of these stations.

Alternatively, take the JR Yamanote Line to Hamamatsucho Station. From there, the tower is a 15-minute walk.

Quick Facts

Tokyo Tower's height is easy to remember: 333 meters (1,029 feet)

If you're feeling energetic, you can bypass the elevator and take the 600-step stairway up to the Main Deck

The tower was the country's tallest structure before Tokyo Skytree surpassed it in 2010

tour tokyo eiffel

Tokyo Tower's history

With the start of NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, in 1953, the Tokyo area needed a large broadcasting tower.

Based on the Eiffel Tower in design, Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958. At 333 meters tall, it was the tallest freestanding tower in the world when it was built. It remained the tallest structure in Japan until being surpassed by Skytree in 2010.

Three tiers and spectacular views

Tokyo Tower is separated into three distinct sections. Foot Town sits at the base of the tower and is a vibrant area of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.

The Main Deck is located 150 meters up and offers memorable views of the city as well as a “look-down” window—not for the faint-hearted.

For truly spectacular views, however, seek out the Top Deck. A heady 250 meters in the sky, this point has panoramic views of the metropolis below and, weather allowing, Skytree and even Mt. Fuji on the horizon.

Status symbol

The completion of Tokyo Skytree in 2012 might have stolen some of Tokyo Tower's glory, but the 1958 construction remains a magnificent symbol of Japan's postwar ascendancy, as well as an exciting entertainment hub for both visitors to, and residents of, this inexhaustible city.

Hours and fees

The observatories are open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Admission to the main deck costs 900 yen. A ticket for the Top Deck Tour, which gives access to the Top Deck, is 3,000 yen.

Tokyo Tower

🗼 the japanese eiffel tower.

Tokyo Tower is Japanese broadcasting tower looking like the Eiffel Tower, inaugurated in 1958 in Minato ward in the south of the capital. It is one of the highest metallic towers in the world, as it culminates at 333 meters high, with two observatories on the city. Characterized by its red and white colors, it is illuminated at night following the seasons or the events.

Since the inauguration of Tokyo SkyTree in 2012, Tokyo Tower  🗼 seems to have been neglected by many travelers. It is, however, still well worth a visit based on the following features.

Designed by architect Tachu Naito and completed in 1958 (opened to the public on December 23), the Tokyo Tower was obviously inspired by Paris’ Eiffel Tower, although it rises a good dozen meters higher (or 7,6 meters if you include the aerial). With its 333 meters , it ranks as one of the tallest metal towers in the world. It is, however, much lighter weighing in at four thousand tons compared with the ten thousand tons of its Parisian counterpart.

The construction was intended to provide better resistance to earthquakes, obviously a key issue with Japanese buildings, especially very tall ones.

Emblematic spot for popular culture

You will instantly recognize its distinctive red and white metal latticework, beautifully illuminated after nightfall. At the tower’s base (an 80-meters cubical building) is a shopping center named " Foot Town " which houses restaurants. It even had an aquarium that is now definitely closed.

In March 2015, the first official One Piece entertainment park was opened in the Tower and attracted 100,000 visitors within the first 48 days. In April of the same year, it was updated with, among other things, an exclusive 4D short movie. However, Tokyo One Piece Tower also closed in July 2020 for lack of customers due to the Covid-19   🦠 pandemic.

Since April 2022, Red Tokyo Tower is the new leisure area dedicated to Esports and all forms of electronic games that was laid out in Foot Town. It notably hosts virtual car  🚙 racing competitions, a concert venue equipped with a virtual reality system, gaming and board games spaces, all in a futuristic decor.

Tokyo Tower, Night view of the Top Deck Observatory

Observatories with a view on Mount Fuji

Tokyo Tower also houses two observation decks :

  • The first is named " Main Deck " and is located 145 meters above ground, and was renovated from mid-2017 to September 2019. The more dauntless visitors can reach it by climbing its stairs (open only on weekends and bank holidays ). It has a glass floor and also harbors, incidentally, the highest Shinto shrine of Tokyo Prefecture.
  • The special observatory is located 250 meters above ground, just underneath the aerial and was renamed " Top Deck " for its reopening on February 3, 2018, after a two-years-long renovation. From up there, one can have a view of Mount Fuji in clear weather.

Although the TV / radio broadcast aerial in-between these two floors was in use for a long time, it was recently moved to Tokyo SkyTree which is twice as tall as Tokyo Tower.

For more sights, walk on to the beautiful Zojo-ji Temple which is near the Tower.

Truly Tokyo

A Tokyo Travel Guide

Tokyo Tower

The iconic red and white Tokyo Tower in Minato Ward is Japan's answer to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Great cityscape views can be had from the observatory - if you don't mind that they don't include the tower itself.

Tokyo Tower

With its iconic red and white stripes, Tokyo Tower is Tokyo’s answer to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Modeled after the latter, Tokyo Tower is the city’s second tallest structure after the Tokyo Skytree at 333 meters high. It's a popular tourist spot – with two observation decks at 150 and 250 meters respectively – but it also serves as an active broadcasting facility.

You can buy tickets for the Tokyo Tower online.

Tokyo Tower

The main deck at 150 meters has some vertigo-inducing glass floor sections where you can look down to the ground below. We don’t recommend this if you have a fear of heights.

Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower is especially pretty at night when it's illuminated. The colours on the tower lighting change according to the season, and nearby Shiba-koen Park is a popular spot for a date night out.

Tokyo Tower

The only snag with going up to the observation deck of the Tokyo Tower is, of course, that you won’t see the iconic red and white tower itself in the city skyline. If you'd rather have a metropolitan view that includes this tower, you're better off visiting another observation deck like the Tokyo Skytree or the Mori Building nearby in Roppongi .

At present, the Special Observatory and sections of the Main Observatory are closed for reconstruction work until spring 2019. But you can still enjoy the view of Tokyo Tower from afar. Tickets are available to purchase in advance online.

Avec son rouge éclatant et son allure de tour Eiffel, la tour de Tokyo est l'un des symboles de la capitale nippone

With its dazzling red and its Eiffel Tower look, the Tokyo Tower is one of the symbols of the Japanese capital

The Tokyo Tower, emblem of the Japanese capital

Higher, lighter, more colourful... The Tokyo Tower was intended when it was created as a modernized version of the Eiffel Tower. Like the Iron Lady, her younger sister is a "must see" of the capital and one of its finest vantage points. It has now become the symbol of the capital.

Having become the symbol of the city, Tokyo Tower is located in the Minato district, in the heart of the Japanese capital....

The history of Tokyo Tower

Inaugurated in 1958 , the construction of the Tokyo Tower coincides with what some call the Japanese economic "miracle". The Tokyo Tower, or Tokyo Tower, symbolizes the spectacular regeneration of post-war Japan. His recurring appearances in the kaiju , the monster films very popular in the 1950s, contributed to his establishment in the Japanese collective imagination. Destroyed fictitiously by Godzilla , Mothra (the giant moth) and other King Kongs in the films, the Tokyo Tower remains one of the most effective means of setting a Tokyo scene.

Built in 1957 by the architect Tachū Naitō , the Tokyo Tower is 332.6 meters high : it is therefore taller than its Parisian sister. It weighs "only" 4000 tons , against the 10,000 of the Eiffel Tower. The steel that constitutes it comes partly from American tanks damaged during the Korean War. It was of course designed to withstand violent earthquakes but also the winds of typhoons .

With her beautiful red and white dress, she can be spotted from afar among the buildings. The color of paint used is in fact international orange (the same as for the Golden Gate Bridge) in San Francisco), due to aviation safety rules. From a distance, this very dark orange hue passes for red...

From its construction, it was thought to be a radio tower, basically only for the NHK. Today, it still transmits 9 television signals and 5 radio signals. Even if it has today been surpassed by the very modern Tokyo SkyTree and its 634 meters high, the Tokyo Tower remains an emblem and a good point of view to admire the buildings of the city.

Tokyo Tower illuminations

Tokyo Tower is illuminated at night, and changes colors with the seasons. In winter, it is illuminated in orange, then, from July, it is illuminated in white. However, since Japan's entry into the Reiwa era in 2019 , it has also benefited from a brand new light, soberly titled "Diamond Veil". 268 colored LEDs are installed on 17 floors. They change color individually for an infinite number of combinations.

This new lighting is visible on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to midnight, and its colors vary according to the month of the year. During the holidays or on the occasion of special events (new year, hanami...etc) specific themes are applied

Visit Tokyo Tower

The tower has two floors hosting panoramic observatories , the first at 150 meters, the second at 250 meters.

The first platform can be reached via an elevator , or by climbing the 600 steps for the more athletic... This is where you can stand on the famous glass floor , which allows you to admire the ground at 145 meters under your feet. Subjects to vertigo, abstain!

The second platform, the highest, (the " Top Deck "), was renovated for two years and reopened in 2018. It is located just under the antenna of the tower.

During the renovation, many mirrors and LED lights were installed, to give a typical Japanese "spaceship" effect. You should know that the visit to the Top Deck must necessarily follow a reservation , either taken in advance on the website (adult price 2800 yen, 23€), or directly on site (3000 yen, or around 25€). Tours depart every 15 minutes.

Finally, preferably choose a nice day for the visit. On a clear day, it is indeed possible to see Mount Fuji in the distance.

  • Read also: 5 places from which to see Mount Fuji

Those who don't like the height can console themselves on the ground floor with a visit to the giant aquarium, souvenir shops and tea rooms, as well as a shopping center ("Foot Town") that hosts the base of Tokyo Tower. In 2015, the first theme park dedicated to One Piece was also installed there.

Not far from the Tokyo Tower, we advise you to pay a visit to the Zojo-ji temple which is readily displayed in photos next to the famous tower.

Tokyo Tower

tour tokyo eiffel

Standing 333 meters high in central Tokyo , Tokyo Tower (^[) is the world's tallest, self-supported steel tower and 3 meters taller than its model, the Eiffel Tower. A symbol of Japan's post-war rebirth as a major economic power, Tokyo Tower was the country's tallest structure from its completion in 1958 until 2012 when it was surpassed by the Tokyo Skytree . In addition to being a popular tourist spot, Tokyo Tower serves as a broadcast antenna.

The tower's main deck at 150 meters is reached via elevator or a 600-step staircase (both paid). Thanks to the tower's central location, the observatory offers an interesting view of the city despite being only at a relatively moderate height. There are also some "lookdown windows" in the floor to stand on, a souvenir shop and a cafe.

tour tokyo eiffel

A second set of elevators connect the main deck to the 250 meter high top deck , from where you can get a bird's eye view of Tokyo from high above the surrounding buildings. It is the third highest observation deck in Tokyo (after the two decks at the Tokyo Skytree ). When visibility is good, visitors can see the Tokyo Skytree and Mount Fuji in the distance.

In the building at the base of the tower, known as the Foot Town, visitors can find a selection of shops and restaurants, as well as the Red Tokyo Tower e-sports entertainment complex. Spanning multiple floors, this complex offers various interactive games and e-sport activities. Admission tickets allow visitors to play any game during the ticket's validity period.

Tokyo Tower

The History of Tokyo Tower

Though officially called "Nippon Denpatō" ("Japan Radio Tower"), Tokyo 's iconic landmark is much more commonly known as "Tokyo Tower." Tokyo Tower was built in 1958 to cater to the growing demand for transmission towers from television stations in Tokyo during Japan's post-war boom. Rather than build multiple television towers all over the city, it was decided to build one tower at such a height that TV signals could be transmitted across a city as large as Tokyo from a single location.

Realizing that such a tower would become a significant part of the skyline, the designers of the Tokyo Tower looked for inspiration from other notable landmarks around the world. Eventually, the Eiffel Tower was chosen as the model, and Tokyo Tower would replicate the lattice steel design of Paris' most famous landmark.

Design Features of Tokyo Tower

Located in Shibakoen in the central ward of Minato at 333 meters tall, Tokyo Tower was the tallest freestanding tower in the world when it was built. Ironically, the previous tallest was the Eiffel Tower. Since its completion, a host of TV and radio stations have used antennas to broadcast from the Tokyo Tower, and it continues to be used for both analog and some digital services today.

Besides broadcasting, Tokyo Tower has also been an observation tower ever since it opened. Tokyo Tower features two observation decks: the Main Deck at a height of 150 meters, and the Top Deck at 250 meters. The Top Deck is still the third-highest observation deck in Tokyo, behind the two observatories at Tokyo Skytree. It's estimated that over 150 million people have visited the Tokyo Tower since it first opened over 60 years ago. Despite competition from a host of other observation decks throughout the city, Tokyo Tower still receives around three million tourists every year.

Our Top Tips

JR Pass for Whole Japan

Explore Japan in the most convenient and economical way with a Japan Rail Pass! It is valid for the majority of railways and local buses operated by JR.

Why is Tokyo Tower Orange?

Perhaps Tokyo Tower's most notable design feature is its color. In order to comply with air safety laws, Tokyo Tower is painted a fetching shade of bright orange, officially known as "International Orange." Every five years, the tower is given a fresh coat of paint, which takes a whole year to complete.

At night, Tokyo Tower is beautifully illuminated by a series of floodlights that were specially designed to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Glowing bright against the night sky, the view of the Tokyo Tower after dark is perhaps the most famous sight amongst the city's clustered skyline. The Tokyo Tower's lights turn off at midnight each night, and it's claimed that if you see the tower's lights turn off at night with a loved one you're guaranteed to have a long and happy relationship together.

In the hot summer months from July to September, the Tokyo Tower's lights are set to a cooling shade of white. In the cold of winter, the tower's lights are changed to a deep and warming orange. Every Monday, the tower is illuminated with a special light display called the Infinity Diamond Veil, the colors of which change every month of the year. There are also special illuminations to commemorate certain events, such as new year celebrations and Valentine's Day, and once a month, the top lights are dimmed completely when there's a full moon.

Visiting Tokyo Tower

Where is tokyo tower.

Tokyo Tower is located in Shibakoen in the center of Tokyo. It was deliberately built in central Tokyo so that the tower's TV and radio antennas could reach as far as possible. The Tokyo Tower is around three kilometers south of the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station, and just a few stops from the art museums and notorious nightlife of Roppongi.

How to Get to Tokyo Tower

There are several stations close to the Tokyo Tower. The nearest subway stations are Akabanebashi station and Onarimon station. The nearest JR station is Hamamatsucho Station, which is around a 15 minute walk away.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Tokyo Tower?

Tickets for Tokyo Tower's Main Deck cost 1,200 yen for adults and between 500 to 1,000 yen for children depending on their age. What To See And Do At The Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower's main attractions are the two observation decks that offer glorious views across Tokyo and way beyond. From both decks are sweeping 360-degree panoramic views of one of the world's most spectacular cityscapes.

The Main Deck

Tokyo Tower's lower observation deck is called the Main Deck, which is spread across two floors. At a height of 150 meters from ground level, the view from the Main Deck is still level with many of the rooftops of nearby skyscrapers and office blocks. However, there are still fantastic views way across the city and far beyond, even as far as Mount Fuji to the west when the weather is clear. The recent refurbishment of the Main Deck saw the installation of larger window panels, allowing for a much clearer view of the whole city.

A prominent feature of the lower floor of the Main Deck is the Skywalk Windowsーlarge, clear glass panels built into the floor that looks directly down upon the street 140 meters below. Also located on the Main Deck is the Great Shinto Shrine of Tokyo Tower, the highest altitude shrine in Tokyo, where people come to offer prayers to find love, and students pray for success in exams. The Main Deck also has a small cafe where you can stop and pick up a bite to eat whilst enjoying the incredible views.

The Top Deck

The Tokyo Tower's higher deck, called the Top Deck, is a much smaller circular viewing space. Access to the Top Deck observatory is only available on the Top Deck Tour which includes the cost of admission to the Main Deck. A small elevator on the Main Deck takes you halfway to the Top Deck, where you're offered a free drink and the chance to have a souvenir photo snapped by the tower's photographer. You can buy prints on your way out at the end of your visit. From here, you transfer to another lift to the Top Deck.

Though the Top Deck is a much smaller observation deck, it does offer an incredible bird's eye view of Tokyo. With a vantage point of an extra 100 meters, there is a much clearer view over the nearer areas of Tokyo than from the Main Deck. The Top Deck Tour also includes a free audio guide that explains the history of each corner of Tokyo as you walk around the observation deck. As part of the tower's recent refurbishment, the Top Deck's interior has been fitted with dazzling geometric mirrors which reflect the light during the daytime and the lights of the city skyline at night.

What Else Can You Do at Tokyo Tower?

You can climb tokyo tower.

If you're feeling adventurous (and fit), then there's an alternative way to reach the tower's Main Deck. Instead of taking the elevator, you can choose to climb the Tokyo Tower's external staircase that starts on the roof of FootTown, the food and shopping complex that sits underneath the tower, and leads all the way to the Main Deck. It's 600 steps in total and it can get pretty breezy along the way, but if you're looking for a very memorable experience, as well as some unique views of the city, climbing the Tokyo Tower might be for you. Be aware that despite the extra effort involved it still costs the same to take the stairs as it does to take the lift to the Main Deck.

At the base of Tokyo Tower is FootTown, a five-story building that features a host of shops selling Tokyo Tower souvenirs and Japanese confectioneries. There is also a host of restaurants, including Japanese fast food staples Mos Burger and Pizza-la, as well as more traditional ramen and "donburi" (rice bowl dish) restaurants. Also inside FootTown is the Tower Gallery, which has displays and photos that document the history of the Tokyo Tower. The base of the Tokyo Tower outside FootTown is also regularly decorated throughout the year to celebrate annual events and traditional Japanese holidays such as Children's Day.

What Else Is Near the Tokyo Tower?

Zojoji temple.

Directly in front of the Tokyo Tower is Zojoji Temple. Zojoji Temple dates back to the 16th century and sits right beneath the Tokyo Tower. The contrasting styles of architecture between Zojoji Temple and the Tokyo Tower beautifully illustrate how the old and new sit side by side in Tokyo and make for a great photo.

Surrounding Tokyo Tower and Zojoji Temple is Shibakoen, or Shiba Park, one of the oldest parks in the city and a beautiful green space. Largely dominated by the grounds of Zojoji Temple, as well as two high-end hotels, Shiba Koen has excellent views of Tokyo Tower throughout the park. Featuring a waterfall and an artificial gorge, Shiba Park is particularly resplendent during the cherry blossom season in spring. During the autumn, the trees in the Autumn Maple Leaves Valley, right beneath the Tokyo Tower, turn stunning shades of red and gold.

Not far from the Tokyo Tower is the vibrant district of Roppongi. One of Tokyo's major entertainment hubs, Roppongi is home to a number of high-end malls and gleaming modern skyscrapers. Roppongi is also famous for its raucous nightlife scene, packed with a multitude of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Roppongi is also a great place for art lovers, with numerous contemporary art galleries to be found here, including the Mori Art Museum located inside the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. Also inside the Mori Tower is another of Tokyo's famous observation decks, the Tokyo City View, located on the tower's 52nd floor.

Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree

The advent of digital television and radio broadcasting brought new challenges for Tokyo Tower. In order for digital broadcasts to be received, they need to be transmitted at much higher frequencies than analog broadcasts. Those higher frequencies need to be transmitted from a much greater height than Tokyo Tower can offer. As a result, a new broadcasting tower, the Tokyo Skytree, was built in 2012.

At 634 meters tall, Tokyo Skytree is just over 300 meters taller than Tokyo Tower and now dominates the city's skyline. Tokyo Skytree has taken over from the Tokyo Tower as the main broadcasting tower in the city. Today the antennas on the Tokyo Tower mostly broadcast analog TV and FM radio stations. Just like Tokyo Tower, Skytree is also home to two observation decks, one at 350 meters high and another at 450 meters.

Facing competition from Tokyo Skytree, alongside a host of other observatories that have sprung up across the city over the years, Tokyo Tower has had to change with the times. A complete renovation was carried out on the Tokyo Tower's two observation decks to tie in with the tower's 60th anniversary in 2018, aimed at boosting visitor numbers. As well as installing larger, unobstructed window frames to give a clearer view of the city, more signage and information were installed pointing out the location of Tokyo's landmarks and famous areas.

Plan ahead by booking your shinkansen, airport train, and express train tickets online in English. Have the tickets sent to you by mail or collect them at the station once you're in Japan.

Tokyo Tower or Tokyo SkyTree - Which Is Better?

As observation towers, the Tokyo Tower and the Skytree offer very different perspectives of Tokyo. The Tokyo Skytree certainly offers a much higher view of the city. Located on the eastern side of Tokyo and slightly removed from the center of town, the views from the Skytree are looking out at the city, as well as many miles way beyond the metropolis.

Being close to the center of Tokyo, Tokyo Tower's observation decks offer a much more intimate view of the city, as it is located in and amongst everything. Many more of the city's landmarks are easier to see from the Tokyo Tower, especially from the higher Top Deck.

It's also worth taking into account that the Tokyo Skytree is a much more modern commercial complex than the Tokyo Tower. Whilst the Tokyo Tower has a few shops and restaurants at FootTown, at the base of the Tokyo Skytree is Tokyo Solamachi , a huge mall filled with over 300 stores and restaurants. If you're looking for an overall day out to go along with a breathtaking view of Tokyo, you might prefer a trip to the Tokyo Skytree. Bear in mind though that, due to its popularity, waiting times for the Skytree can be incredibly long and tickets are usually issued for specific time slots. When it is at its busiest you can easily face a wait of several hours for an available time slot to the Skytree's observation decks.

Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree - Comparing Costs

Affordability may be a key factor in helping you to decide which of the two towers you'd prefer to visit. In terms of pricing, Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree aren't too far apart when comparing combination tickets. The cost of an adult ticket for the Top Deck Tour at the Tokyo Tower is 3,000 yen, and this includes entry to the tower's main deck. At Tokyo Skytree, an adult combination ticket for both observation decks costs 3,100 yen on weekdays and 3,400 yen on weekends.

However, the cost comparison for entry only to the two tower's main observation decks shows some disparity in pricing. Tickets for the Tokyo Tower's Main Deck observatory are only 1,200 yen, but an adult's ticket for the equivalent Tembo Deck at Tokyo Skytree is almost double at 2,100 yen on weekdays and increases to 2,300 yen on weekends. It's worth remembering though that even though the Tembo Deck is the lower of the Skytree's two observation decks, the view is still 200 meters higher than the Tokyo Tower's Main Deck. Alternatively, you could choose to skip Tokyo Skytree's lower main deck altogether and instead buy a ticket for the Tembo Galleria, the tower's higher observation deck. At 450 meters high, a single adult ticket to the highest observation deck in Tokyo is a relatively cheap 1,000 yen on weekdays and 1,100 yen on weekends.

Tokyo Tower - A Much Loved Tokyo Icon

As one of the world's most famous landmarks, the Tokyo Tower remains a hugely popular tourist attraction, even 60 years after it was built. Even though it's no longer Tokyo's main broadcasting tower, the Tokyo Tower's iconic orange design and location in the heart of the city means that it is still a much-loved piece of Tokyo's ever-expanding skyline. The recent refurbishments of the tower's observation deck have only added to the Tokyo Tower's appeal, with millions of visitors coming to take in the tower's breathtaking views every year.
