The weather was completely perfect, the lighting gorgeous (it was the golden hour and sunset), food delicious, great mai tais and friendly staff! We even saw a sea lion lounging on someone's pier. My friends took some spectacular photos that I'm going to get them to share here."

"The perfect setting for my 80th birthday party. Family and friends dined at a delicious buffet and enjoyed their favorite beverages. The music, provided by Tony Shaw of Cornerstone Productions, was geared for the occasion, encouraging a raucous karaoke session. My birthday cake was fabulous. We used to live in Chicago and went back to show the city to our teenage children. The architectural boat tour was a great start to introduce them to the architectural landscape and history of our beloved city. […] The captain of the boat was a lot of fun and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. I studied the architecture of Chicago in college and she knew her facts.

We had a great informational time on the tour. So many buildings, so little time! Even at 90 minutes the tour seemed to fly by. Our guide, Sean, did a great job keeping the same pace as the boat describing each building in great detail, builders, architects, year, styles, and revisions.

Absolutely terrific river tour of Chicago’s architecture. When the other architectural tours were full, we defaulted to this one. HOME RUN! Billy was a wonderful guide. Obviously comfortable in front of a crowd, and his spontaneity kept us entertained throughout.

Donamarie S.

I have wanted to book this boat tour for years! I had family in town from England as well as out of state so I figured this would be perfect for everyone to see as much as possible with such a big group. It was perfect! We had so much fun!

Fun experience! The tour guide and captain of the ship were funny and engaging. The views is spectacular. I was born and raised in Chicago, but seeing it from the river at sunset was just spectacular. The route that was taken was incredibly scenic and I got some awesome shots of the city.

Visit the Most Haunted Places in San Antonio

From its time as a Spanish Mission town to the rapid growth of recent years, San Antonio has retained its quirky frontier nature. The dead still rest underfoot in many areas of the city-pioneering men, women, and children whose presence can still be felt, especially late at night when the city is fast asleep.

San Antonio has another kind of nightlife, one that not everyone is brave enough to investigate. Let us guide you on this moonlight tour and reveal San Antonio’s haunted past.

Constructed as a Roman Catholic Mission in 1718, the Alamo was supposed to be a place of peace, worship, and community. But all that changed in 1836. In a bloody fight for independence, 100 Texans fought back against thousands of Mexican soldiers from inside the mission. After days of fighting, the Mexicans scaled the walls and massacred the rebels. The soldiers on both sides still replay those violent moments in the shadows of the Alamo.

The Emily Morgan Hotel

This hotel was originally a Medica Arts Building. It housed doctors of all specialties – dentists, psychologists, trauma experts, you name it. The medical history means it was also crawling with every kind of patient, many of whom died on the premises. Some guests say those patients still wander the halls. There have been reports of an antiseptic smell wafting down the 14th floor and sights of patients in gowns knocking on doors looking for the doctor.

Majestic Theatre

Like almost all theaters, the Majestic has its fair share of ghost stories. In 1929, the theater opened and shocked the world with a fancy new invention: air conditioning. And yet, a chill hangs in the air no matter what the HVAC temperature setting. Performers of the past dance on the stage to relive their fleeting moments of glory. Those who spend the night may get an encore performance from the other side.

Test your bravery, and join us!

What to expect on your san antonio ghost tour.

San Antonio is known for its diverse cultural scene, good food, and vibrant nightlife. The famous Riverwalk wasn’t always the tourist attraction it is now, though; it, too, has a past. The history of this great city goes all the way back to the 1836 Battle of The Alamo and the fight for Texas’ independence from Mexico before it chose to join the United States. The bright future as a part of the United States cleared a path to build the great city of San Antonio, the majestic buildings of the historic downtown lining the ribbons of dark water that run through this place. However, these same rivers once ran red with blood, and corpses floated downstream.

As a hotbed of spooky activity, the city cannot be matched for its countless stories of strange and spooky happenings. Here in River City, you will encounter an eclectic mix of the historic and the modern, the old and the youthful, the beautiful and the ugly.

Let us take you deep into the history of the Alamo they never taught you in school. During this enlightening and shocking journey through the ghosts and history of the Alamo City, you will come to understand the shocking truth about San Antonio’s past and what lies beneath virtually every block of this stunning city.

Discover the Horrors That Haunt San Antonio

Learn about the grizzly deaths of the brave soldiers of the Alamo and why their ghosts remain.

Visit a hotel that was a former hospital and became known for the numerous deaths that occurred after.

Discover the former slum neighborhood that is now home to the spirits of Comanche Indians.

Why You Should Book Your San Antonio Ghost Tour Tonight!

You need a crash course in the history of San Antonio

All the locations we visit, on the standard tour, and the extended tour, offer an insight into the history and character of River City, from the earliest days as a Spanish mission, through the upheaval of the Spanish Independence War , to the Civil War and today’s modern growth every period has its ghosts and they are a wonderful way to bring the past alive, and much more memorable than a bus tour or a museum.

Let the fascinating local guides bring the personality of San Antonio to life for you tonight.

You want an activity the whole family can enjoy

Ghost tours can be overwhelmingly scary. We try to balance the grim truth and educational insight into how things were at various stages of San Antonio’s Development. For example, the extended tour visits the charming and atmospheric stop at La Villita, Spanish for Little Village, your ghost tour will pass by the front yard where a Doctor boiled the heads of dead Comanche warriors, to study their skulls, he claimed, but will you believe his reason after hearing the whole story?

Even though the story is quite ghastly, we deliver tours that are for the whole family, are completely accessible, the guides of River City Ghosts are all consummate professionals who will entertain with true stories from the past.

You are a Non-Believer, testing the waters of the supernatural

Some of the ghost stories require a big leap; others are just obviously true. We never try and change your mind, but all the stories are well researched, and the settings are straight out of the history books.

We rely on first-hand accounts that were plausible and don’t include the more farfetched tales. If you are the suggestible kind, you might prefer to believe that ghosts are a figment of the beholders’ imagination. And if you are at all religious, then the concept of purgatory, resurrection, and visitation by spirits is not a very big leap at all. Whatever your point of view, we offer a lot more than the prospect of looking for a white apparition to present itself. You’ll hear tales of human struggle, adversity, and misery, that at the worst, will make you grateful for your lot.

Have you heard of the multiple suicides that have happened at the Tower Life Building? Starting with one of the brothers who built the tower, after things got really bad in the Depression of 1929, Jim Smith, the CEO of the very successful company, could see no way out and dramatically flung himself from the roof of the tower.

He seemed to have started something; there have been several confirmed attempts since then, the most recent one in 2016. It’s for you to decide if it’s just a copycat way to take your own life, or if the building is cursed and feeds on negative thoughts. Join the tour to hear the full story, it has several more facts that might provide overwhelming evidence of supernatural activity.

In San Antonio and Don't Know What to Do.

There is lots to do in San Antonio; you could walk around in the hot midday sun or visit one of the many museums and deep dive into the Alamo’s fascinating history. If you want to get a broad insight into the city, you could take a bus tour and see everything from behind glass. They all have their advantages, but only River City Ghosts gets you up close and personal to the sites, in the cool evening light, and brings history to life with the memorable tales of real people who lived and died in San Antonio.

River City Ghosts provider a different perspective on the vibrant and beautiful city of San Antonio; we take you to the safe and tranquil setting of the River Walk. Still, we tell you all about its less than respectable past. As late as the 1950s, the San Antonio Old City River Walk was a seedy area with high crime and a large homeless population. The scene of many murders, the River Walk, was only recently cleaned up into today’s charming attraction.

You’re on a tight schedule

Visiting San Antonio for just the weekend? Only one or two days to see everything? Are your mornings and afternoons filled with other things? Then an evening tour with River City Ghosts might be just the thing to help you cross off a wide variety of downtown locations and get an entertaining tour of the city. As well as the entertaining and downright spooky ghosts’ stories, we also weave in a lot of local history and bring the dramatic story of San Antonio to life with animated and knowledgeable local guides.

Get an insider look at the San Antonio culture

We’ve all heard of the Alamo; we were taught about the basic outline of events at school. Taking the River City Ghost Tour will not only bring you to the actual site of the battle, but we’ll tell you stories no school child has ever heard.

For example, the Alamo today would not exist if it were not for the intervention of people from beyond the grave. When the Mexican army surrendered to General Sam Houston and his troops at the battle of San Jacinto, the word was quickly sent to burn the Mexican occupied Alamo and retreat south. The soldiers at the Alamo that received the order went back to burn the buildings but quickly returned, with no smoke in the sky. They reported they had been stopped by six spectral figures wielding swords of pure flame. Astonished, their commanding officer also went to burn down the Alamo, but returned too, with a pale face and a look of astonishment in his eyes. ‘El Diablo!” he concurred, and the army retreated, leaving the Alamo intact.

Be a tourist in your own backyard

Are you a resident of San Antonio? We would lay money that you have not heard all the ghost stories we tell on the River City Ghosts tour of your fair city. Maybe you heard only some of the stories or got a slightly different version.

Being a tourist in your own town is a great way to break out of the normal routine of life, support some local businesses, and try something new. All tours start and end at the corner of Crockett Street and North St Mary’s Street, we will doubtlessly visit some locations you may have driven past, but do you know their history? Are you familiar with the stories of the haunting of the Empire theatre ? Can you tell people why they might have their arm grabbed by a shabbily dressed man asking for twenty-five cents?

Imagine the rich and spooky tales you will be able to relate to the next out-of-town visitors you welcome to beautiful San Antonio if you have the memorable and entertaining stories from River City Ghosts under your belt.

9 must-do tours across Vietnam, from south to north

Plan well and you can experience Vietnam’s wonderful mix of nature, culture, and culinary delights in under two weeks. The secret is to take a tour, writes Kate Holland

From modern cities with intriguing back stories to lantern-laden ancient quarters and open water replete with majestic jutting rocks, Vietnam has it all. At around 1650km from top to bottom, it’s roughly the same length as New Zealand.

We recommend travelling from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi (or vice versa) and stopping in Hoi An and/or Hue mid-way.

From south to north, these nine tours ensure you experience a good mix of everything in all three destinations.

Ho Chi Minh City

Scope out the best of Saigon

Gain some bearings and let the history lessons begin as you spend half a day under the direction of a Wide Eyed Tours guide in Ho Chi Minh City.

The indelible marks of the French and Americans are everywhere. Vietnam’s own Notre Dame and Central Post office (constructed by the famous architect Gustave Eiffel), for starters. Egg coffee is another; a means of circumventing high milk prices with some whipping action and sugar.

Gifted elephant feet, beautiful bonsais and the bunker are just a few things likely to pique interest at Independence Palace.

A warning for those with children, some images in the War Remnants Museum are graphic. The devastating impact of Agent Orange, and war in general, is a lesson our children will never forget.

Experience the Mekong River on a rice barge

Indulge in modern-day comforts aboard a former rice barge that’s teeming with timber and artful decoration.

Day one on The Mekong Eyes Classic Cruise is spent scenery scanning before disembarking to stroll through a village and its surrounding fruit fields – sampling produce and climbing a coconut tree if you dare.

Wake to an indulgent and scenic breakfast on the deck, weather permitting, that includes heavenly home-made hibiscus jam biscuits and Vietnam’s signature sweet coffee .

Board a sampan boat to visit the Cai Rang floating market up close, including boats that have been homes for more than 25 years (toilet-free and all). Marvel at the abundance of wares and enjoy the chaos of bargaining with merchants approaching with fruit, sometimes at speed.

Beat the bus tours on a speedboat

The Cu Chi tunnels are an incredible and vast network of underground passageways built and used by the Viet Cong to evade detection as they moved troops and supplies during numerous conflicts.

Their intrigue is high and so are the visitor numbers . Beat the bus tours and avoid (some of) the crowds and head there via a Les Rives speedboat. The English-speaking guide will introduce you to more of life on the banks of the Saigon River along the way.

Some tunnels have been widened at the entrance to ensure almost anyone of any size can gain a true sense of life underground. The bonus? You can pop out just 20 metres later.

Mix cooking with culture and gorge on your creations

Hoi An’s Central Market exudes as much character as its lanterns bring charm. Venture deep inside as part of the Bay Mau Eco Cooking Tour to collect your fresh ingredients. Absorb the cacophony of butchering and bartering, along with a smorgasbord of smells.

The cooking class is in a stilt house with scenic views, adjacent to the Cam Thanh Coconut Village.

Rice paper is made from scratch, shrimp are strategically placed in rolls to create a happy face, beef is cooked fast in flames, and the main course is laid out like a sunflower.

Leave with bellies full of food and heads full of ideas. And a possible addiction to banh xeo (crispy Vietnamese crepes).

baymaucooking.com

Cycle through the countryside

Cycling through palm forests, down country lanes, past water buffalo and picturesque rice paddies is calming, right? Right. Especially when the journey includes the Tra Que Organic Vegetable Village and a herb-filled feast for lunch. Just note the need to make your way out of central Hoi An first. Scooter chaos is real. Young people may need cajoling.

There’s a short break en route at Cam Thanh Village to board a traditional basket boat and explore the Water Coconut Palm Forest. Learn how to paddle, cast a fishing net (without falling in) and catch the cute (also edible) “purple crabs” in the canal. Arranged through Wide Eyed Tours.

Sightseeing with speed on a motorbike

Step it up a notch and jump aboard a motorbike as a pillion passenger. Drivers, arranged through Wide Eye Tours, will be dictated by your speed of choice. Veer through little laneways, beside canals and on to local markets more than 140 years old.

Discover the fascinating history of Vietnam’s emperors at Hue’s Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City. Stop off at a king’s tomb, a unique Eunuch pagoda (try saying that on repeat) and a local incense-making business that boasts colourful spiral arrangements. Indulge in a traditional Buddhist Banquet on the way home. Vegetables never tasted so good.

Cyclo your way to Hanoi’s best street food

Ignore the touristy feeling and enjoy being ridden around the colourful Old Quarter in a three-wheeled chariot. At a perfectly voyeuristic eye-level and pace, it’s a welcome reprieve to the constant need to watch where you’re walking.

Once complete, meet your street food guide at Don Xuan market (Hai from Wide Eyed Tours ) and venture into venues previously overlooked. Tastebuds are treated with everything from bite-size banh mi and bowls of bun cha (reportedly Barack Obama’s favourite Vietnamese dish) to warm green sticky rice with coconut ice cream. History and fun facts on the side.

Jump aboard a Jeep

Clamber in and out of one of Vietnam’s legendary army Jeeps and take in weird and wonderful parts of Hanoi accompanied by a driver and expert guide. Organised through Wide Eyed Tours, this expedition combines must-see sights with everyday life.

Tick off the Vietnam Military History Museum (noting that outside exhibits are currently off-site) and landmarks such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Trab Quoc Pagoda, Temple of Literature and famous Long Bien Bridge.

Meander along the maze of backstreets and tiny alleyways adorned with overhead laundry, past homes and schools, to greet wedding cake makers, black market stall holders and cages of frogs. Meet elders in their loungerooms who share stories and songs and climb stairs at lightning speed.

Talk to your guides. Keep them close as you finish with lunch at the Hidden Gem Cafe (a venue that boasts rainbow-coloured noodles and repurposed everything). Their insights are as illuminating as any museum and personal too.

Discover what’s so heavenly about Halong Bay

An ocean view peppered with thousands of limestone islands in striking shapes and varying sizes – this is the magic of Halong Bay. It’s also why beaches and staircases heave with tourists.

Amanda Cruise offers an overnight journey that leaves from Tuan Chau Marina and takes the most scenic route to Trinh Nu and Sung Sot Caves. Revel in the views whether from your cabin, strolling past stalactites, or kayaking below rock-climbing monkeys.

Bonuses include the complimentary cooking lesson and traditional squid fishing off the back of the boat. Photos of bare feet on boat rails are bound to appear in your album.
