To everyone who has drop a comment, I feel my little experience about Ghana should be able to do some help. However, making it straight and explicit will even be better . Firstly, you can travel to Ghana without a means of international passport or ID and one can also travel with any means of ID. provided your real Identity is on it… buh the Bus Prize varies from each other at the same company you wanna travel to cuz there is price for ID, International Passport and non ID. Secondly. travelling to Ghana by road will take you nothing less than 12 to 15 hours and God Help if it doesn’t last longer due to some unplanned events. buh be rest assured that at every boarder, you’re likely to be checked and most especially Lakordji boarder in Togo where the yellow card is always checked. and you can also take your time to do some sight seeing and make currency exchange. Yellow card: as meaningless as it may seem, Yellow card is often even important than the international passport itself cuz it’s like a certificate that you’re okay in terms of health to go to your destination and if you can’t get it from Nigeria, you’re likely to pay the sum of 500 or 1,000 to get another one in Togo.. it’s usually 500 buh be prepared in case there is change in Price for that. International passport is a requirement for trip to Ghana by road or air. In the past, one could go with just govt ID card (Drivers’ License, PVC, National ID card) but such IDs attract an extra payment of 2,000 thereabout to Bus companies who know how to settle immigration officers illegally. However, with the new Yellow Fever Vaccination Card (E-Yellow card( system which has replaced the old yellow card, it is legally impossible to travel to Ghana without an international passport. The Passport is needed to procure the E-Yellow Card. Passports that have not been used to travel before also get charged 2,000 by ABC as at Dec.2018 for stamping of Benin, Togo and Accra border stamps for both to and fro journeys. I hope these answers some questions above. Thanks

If you are looking for the best time to travel to Ghana. There is no best time. The country is open every day to visitors. To have a smooth trip, you need to leave Nigeria early. The best time to travel from Lagos is between 6 am to 8 am. Other than this, you will be getting to Accra late at night.

As a first time traveller or travelling with a virgin passport. You will pay extra for stamping your virgin passport.

4. Laissez-Passer (Travel Documents that allows you to travel through the Republic of Benin and Togo by road) You can process this at the border.

The cost of buses varies from company to company. Another factor to consider is if you are travelling during peak or off peak. There is usually a surge in cost during festive seasons. But due to the economic situation of Nigeria. The prices have increased and now ranges from 15,000 to 30,000. For one way trip. Since covid and the recent economic clampdown. The new rate is between 25,000 to 45,000 for a single trip.

More than 85 per cent of the rates you will see online are old rates. The rates are usually between 12,000 Naira and 22,000 Naira. But things have changed. You might be paying double the stated rate now.

How Long From Lagos To Accra by Road – The Long Ride 

Travelling to Ghana by road usually take between 9 to 12 hours. If the reason why you are travelling by road is to see beautiful landscaped. You will be disappointed. The express passes through mostly the less developed parts of the three countries. However, it makes you appreciate the people and the culture. You get to know the cities better. It will also allow you to visit multiple countries. The distance from Lagos to Ghana is about 450 km. That is if you travel through Aflao. Travelling from Lagos to Ghana by Road

If you are travelling from Lagos to Accra by road. You will be passing through two other countries aside from Nigeria. The countries are the Benin Republic and Togo. 

The Borders

You will have to go through 3 different borders, at each of the borders, you will exit, undergo some searches before you can stamp your passport. These are the borders: 

Nigeria/Benin Border at Lagos (Seme Border)

Benin Togo Border (Hillacondji)

Togo – Ghana Border Aflao – This is the most organized border of the three. The immigration officers are very professional. 

Nigeria / Benin Border aka Seme Border 

Passing through the borders is one of the most stressful parts of the journey. You will have to go through a series of checks by the Immigration, Customs, Police, Port Health, NDLEA, DSS etc. It could drain you mentally, physically and financially. Now you see why having the necessary documents is a must. That way, you may stand your ground to avoid some payments. But at the immigration point. You will pay about a thousand naira before they stamp your passport. It is a two to three hours drive from Lagos cities. 

Benin – Togo Border (Hillacondji)

The Hilla Condji Border is another busy border. But not as busy as the Nigeria – Benin border. The process here is faster compared to the Nigerian Benin border. It is a two hours drive from the Seme border. 

Togo – Ghana Border – Aflao border 

The Aflao border is the most organised of the three borders. Immigration officers at the border are very professional in all their dealings. They do not extort you nor ask for bribes. From Hillacondji to Aflao is one hour forty minutes drive. While from Aflao to Accra is another 4 hours drive.   

Crossing the Borders 

If you are travelling from Lagos to Ghana through a standard transport company. The transport company will handle most of the border protocols and stamping etc. You may not have to pay extra, however, if you travel through the public transportation system. That means you will be taking buses from one destination to another. You will have to sort the stamping and the border protocols by yourself. When you approach the border, please do not patronize the touts. Ask for the stamping point and tell anyone that approaches you that you will handle it yourself. Driving from Lagos to Accra with a Personal Vehicle – What You Need to Know

It’s taken a while to put up this post but I’m glad it’s finally up now. Because I wanted to write a fairly comprehensive guide, I reached out to several people on Twitter and via email. I asked them to share their experiences driving from Lagos to Accra. Special thanks to Hammond Oluwole and Franklin Mamah for sharing the details used in writing this post.

Driving from lagos to accra: documents required and costs of travel documents.

Driving from Lagos to Accra – T he Basics…

You need to travel with your international passport and a yellow card certificate. There’s a new process for obtaining a yellow card ( post-August 2018 ). You can read about it here . I’ve also read that the old card would be discontinued next year. So it may make sense to go get a new one.

Driving from Lagos to Accra – V ehicle Documents Needed

In addition to the documents you use for your daily commute in the country, you would need an international driver’s license, ECOWAS vehicle license (not for use in issuing country and valid for a year at  ₦5,000), ECOWAS third-party vehicle insurance (aka Brown Card valid for 3 months at ₦15,000), laissez-passer (this is the travel document that allows you to drive through Benin and Togo, given at the borders) and undertaken (issued at the Aflao border. You’d have to declare your reason for visiting and your duration of stay.)

To issue a laissez-passer, officials at the Benin side of the Seme border would ask for 10K CFA for the first entry and 2K CFA (₦1,300) for subsequent travel. At Lome, you pay 5-6K CFA to the police to register your entry and customs will demand 27K CFA for their laissez-passer.

At the moment, I have no idea how much it costs to obtain the ‘undertaken’ at the Ghanaian border. One thing is for sure though, it will cost you.

What to Expect

As I mentioned in this post , prepare mentally, physically and financially for the worst. Crossing the borders from Lagos to Accra when you’re not driving your personal car is already a hassle on its own. If you’re not used to the route, your first border crossing might be a total nightmare. You might be lucky (or skilled) to get a stress free pass but you should definitely prepare for the opposite.

Franklin, one of the contributors for this post told me that he had to cut his trip short because of the laissez-passer fee at the Hillacondji border.

I offered 10K (instead of 27K) to the officials on the Togo side of Hillacondji. They refused the money, so I turned back.

I did a quick google search to find out the actual price of this document, but I couldn’t find any concrete information. I, however, did see that in a few cases, if you’re able to strike up a friendly conversation and connection with the police and immigration officials, there’s a chance (a very slim one) that they’ll let you pay a lower fee or even go free. The trade-off will be that you spend more hours at the border.

A few more things to note…

If you’re travelling with new documents (especially your passport and yellow card), regardless of whether or not you have your old ones, you will be charged fees for a new entry. Hammond also tells me that the Nigerian custom service officials and the Benin police will charge a fee of up to ₦5,000 and 35K CFA respectively to place a ‘seen on departure’ and ‘seen on arrival’ stamp in your Brown Card.

This, he tells me, is necessary to absolve you of the charge of trying to bring in your vehicle illegally on your return. His number one tip is to have enough money for unexpected charges.

Road Conditions

At the time of this writing, road conditions are fairly good but you should expect a few potholes and bad spots here and there (more on the Nigerian side). There isn’t much to write home about regarding views. If you plan to travel by road solely because you want to enjoy the views, you might as well just fly. You won’t be missing anything.

Another thing to expect is payment of toll fees from Benin down to Ghana. You would also have the police and customs officer stop your vehicle because of your foreign license plates. Have your documents handy and present them when asked.

Final Thoughts and Tips…

Have journey management procedures in place. Know your route – familiarize yourself with Google Maps before leaving, know the major towns too. It’s an almost straight route along the coastline. The road signs in Benin and Ghana are good, just keep following them.

Take enough breaks and try as much as possible to avoid driving at night. Remember that Aflao border to Accra takes another 4 hours. If you get there late, you should find a hotel close by to sleep in. Lastly, take more money than you think you need to cover unforeseen expenses.

I want to know if you buy a car from Nigeria with proper documentation can you drive into Ghana straight without issues

Hello Abdul, you will need a couple of extra documents (and lots of patience and extra cash) in addition to the original car papers to enter into Ghana and drive there without issues. The article highlights the main documents you need but I also recommend contacting someone who does the route regularly, so you don’t miss anything.

I live in both countries and thought about driving to Accra from Lagos this time around but having second thoughts now due to unforeseen situations. This clears some questions.

GHANA ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Yellow fever vaccination requirement for travelers across the frontiers of Ghana

All persons entering Ghana must have a valid passport or Travel Document establishing the identity of the holder.

THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES OF PERSONS ARE EXEMPT FROM ENTRY VISA REQUIREMENTS TO GHANA

• Citizens from the below-listed ECOWAS Member States by virtue of The Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, the Right of Residence and Establishment (PROTOCOL A /PL/5/79):
• Burkina Faso
• Côte d’Ivoire
• Guinea Bissau
• Guinea, Guinea-Bissau
• Sierra Leone
• *Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China

NB: Exemptions category B above shall be for a period not exceeding ninety (90) days from date of entry.

• All nationals of the following countries:
• South Africa
• Trinidad and Tobago
• Uganda, Zimbabwe

**Children with ordinary passports accompanying holders of diplomatic, service or official passports accredited to Ghana or South Africa are exempt from entry visa requirements.

LIST OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH WHICH GHANA HAS CONCLUDED VISA EXEMPTION AGREEMENTS

• Holders of passports of Regional Economic Communities in Africa and the African Economic Community, United Nations and its Specialized Agencies:
• The World Bank
• African Development Bank
• AIR-SIDE TRANSIT

All persons in direct air side transit are exempt from visa requirement.

The following category of persons may not be granted entry visas:

• prohibited immigrants
• A person without visible means of support
• An undesirable person
• On the advice of the health authorities, an individual may be refused entry into

IMPORTANT IMMIGRATION NOTICE

Individuals intending to travel to Ghana must note that;

• the possession of the appropriate documents does not confer a right of entry;
• travelers may be refused entry into Ghana if they fall within the category of prohibited immigrants and;
• if they do not satisfy immigration requirements at the point of entry.

The Government of Ghana will not be financially liable for their repatriation.

OTHER RELEVANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PRIOR TO ENTRY INTO GHANA

• Immigrant Quota – Persons who enter Ghana ostensibly as visitors may not be permitted to take employment.
• No person shall be permitted to accept employment or undertake an occupation for reward in Ghana unless such employment is within an authorized Immigrant Quota (an immigrant quota being the number of non-Ghanaians that a person or firm can employ). An application for Immigrant Quota must be made to:

THE SECRETARY IMMIGRANT QUOTA COMMITTEE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR P. O. BOX M. 42 ACCRA, GHANA

• An approval for Immigrant Quota for a foreign employee must be obtained before proceeding to Ghana.

Investors to Ghana must register with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC). Application for the extension of visa or automatic quota must be accompanied by a supporting letter from the GIPC confirming the status of the Investor.

Investors interested in the Mining Sector must register with the Minerals Commission an approved Mining Services Company. Application for the extension of visa or Immigrant Quota must be accompanied by a supporting letter from the Minerals Commission confirming status.

PROFESSIONALS

It is an offence for foreign doctors, dentists, lawyers, pharmacists and other specific professionals to practice their profession in Ghana unless they register in accordance with the ordinances of their respective professions.

All professionals wishing to enter Ghana to practice one of the above mentioned professions are required to provide particulars of their qualifications to help determine their eligibility for registration.
