Passport Travel Tips

Safeguard your Passport. You must present your passport to the Customs and Border Protection officer upon arrival in the United States. Carry your passport—do not pack it in your checked luggage. We recommend you make a copy of your passport and put it in a separate place as a safeguard in case it is lost or stolen.

Traveling with Children. All children, including infants, must have their own passport or Trusted Traveler Program for U.S. entry. Carry documents for traveling with minor children.

  • If you are escorting a minor child without the parents, have a letter from both parents indicating that you have permission to travel with the minor.
  • If the child is accompanied by only one parent, the parent should have a note from the child's other parent. For example, "I acknowledge that my wife/ husband is traveling out of the country with my son/ daughter. He/She/ has my permission to do so."
  • If a single parent has sole custody, a copy of the court custody document can replace a letter from the other parent.

Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative

The Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows six types of acceptable documents required for travel in the Western Hemisphere, i.e., Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America.

The goal of WHTI is to strengthen border security while facilitating entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers. WHTI makes the traveling process more efficient and convenient.

Application Status Updates

  • Use the Online Passport Status System to check your application status if you applied by mail or in person. You may not be able to get a status update for 2 weeks after you apply or renew. During these weeks, your application and supporting documents are on their way to the Department of State. See more information about current processing times on the Department of State page " U.S. Passports ."

Renew a Passport by Mail

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. To verify if your passport is eligible for renewal by mail, please visit State Department Renew By Mail .

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility to Renew by Mail

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person . An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

You can renew your adult passport by mail if you answer "Yes" to all 5 of the following statements:

Your passport:

  • Is in your possession to submit with your application.
  • Is undamaged other than normal "wear and tear."
  • Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
  • Was issued within the last 15 years.
  • Was issued in your current name or you can document your name change. (Name changes are explained on Change a Passport .)

If your passport does not meet all these requirements, do not mail your renewal application. You must prepare the same application package as a first-time passport applicant.

State Department Renew by Mail

What to Bring for Every Type of Passport Appointment

  • Laura Soper

A woman carrying her application materials to her passport office appointment

Preparing for your passport appointment can feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re applying for a new passport, renewing an old one, or navigating the complexities of a lost passport, we have you covered. For over 20 years, we at the U.S. Passport Service Guide have been providing our readers with the answers to all of their passport and travel document questions. The checklists below will help ensure you walk into your appointment confident and fully prepared.

Use the clickable links to access official application forms, examples, and step-by-step guides for each of the materials you must bring to your appointment.

Scenario 1: Applying for a New Passport

When applying for a new passport, accuracy and thoroughness are key. Here’s what you need:

  • DS-11 Application Form : Complete the form, but don’t sign until instructed.
  • Proof of Citizenship : A birth certificate or previous passport will suffice.
  • Identification : A driver’s license or other government-issued ID is needed.
  • Passport Photos : They must meet the State Department’s criteria.
  • Payment : Check the acceptable payment methods at your location.

Need to know more? Follow our step-by-step guide to getting a new passport .

Exception: Renewing a passport in 72 hours or less

If you have urgent travel plans and cannot afford to wait for routine or expedited processing of a new passport application you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency and get your passport as quickly as the same day. You will need to bring the following:

  • Proof of Imminent Travel : Have a travel itinerary, plane ticket, or other proof of your need for rush passport processing.
  • DS-11 Application Form : Complete it but don’t sign until instructed.
  • Proof of Citizenship : A birth certificate or previous passport is enough.
  • Passport Photos : They must meet the State Department’s criteria .

Note that there are only 26 regional passport processing agencies across the US and they each have limited numbers of appointments available. If you are struggling to either make an appointment or travel to a regional agency that has openings, you can save time and money by hiring a registered passport expediting service. For more information, consult our Ultimate U.S. Traveler’s Guide to Passport Expediters .

Scenario 2: Renewing Your Passport

Renewing your passport is easier than getting a new one. In most cases, you must renew your passport by mail . You need to include the following:

  • DS-82 Form : Fill out this renewal form.
  • Current Passport : Your most recent passport.
  • Updated Passport Photos : New passport photos are required.
  • Payment : Verify the renewal fee and accepted payment methods.

That said, there are some situations where you might have to renew a passport in person.

Exception: Renewing an expired passport

If you need to renew an expired passport that has been expired for more than 5 years or was issued before you were 16 years old, it does not qualify for renewal by mail. You will need to schedule an appointment to apply in person for a new one. You will need to follow the same steps outlined in Scenario 1: Applying for a New Passport.

NOTE : The same steps should also be followed if you need to replace a damaged passport .

If you have urgent travel plans and cannot afford to wait for routine or expedited processing by mail, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency and get your passport faster. In some cases, you can get a passport in 24 hours .

If your passport is undamaged and qualifies for renewal, you should bring the following to your appointment:

Again, if getting an appointment or coordinating travel to a regional passport agency is proving difficult, consider hiring a registered passport expeditor. These courier services are a viable option for getting a passport quickly and, in many cases, cheaper than the cost of getting a passport at a regional agency on your own.

Need to know more? Check out our complete guide to renewing a passport .

Scenario 3: Lost or Stolen Passports

Losing a passport can be stressful, but the solution is clear-cut: you need to report it missing and then apply for a new one. When you go to your passport office appointment, you will need to bring the following:

  • Police Report : Recommended if your passport was stolen.
  • DS-64 and DS-11 Forms : To report the loss and apply for a new one.
  • Identification : Bring any other available identification documents.
  • Updated Passport Photos : Bring new passport photos taken within the last 6 months.
  • Payment : The replacement fee is the same as the fee for a new passport.

Need to know more? Be sure to follow our comprehensive guide to replacing a lost passport .

Scenario 4: Children’s Passports

Applying for a minor’s passport is more involved than applying for almost any other travel document. Part of what makes the process so much more complicated is the fact that it requires additional documents to establish the child’s legal guardianship:

  • Child’s Birth Certificate : To prove citizenship.
  • Parental Consent : Both parents/guardians must be present and consent; otherwise, a DS-3053 form must be completed.
  • Proof of Relationship : If the child’s last name differs from the parents’.
  • Parent/Guardian ID : Government-issued photo IDs are needed.
  • Passport Photos : Passport-sized photos of the child.
  • Payment : The child passport application fees are less than the adult fees.

Need to know more? Use our complete guide to getting a passport for a minor (under the age of 16).

Every passport appointment has its unique requirements, but the need to be well-prepared is universal. Before you set off for the passport office nearest you , ensure you have all the necessary documents and understand the process for your specific situation. Visa & entry requirements for Moscow

  • General Information

Plan your trip

Visa & entry requirements for moscow.

Do you know which documents you'll need to travel to Russia ? Plan ahead and find out if you need your passport, visa, national ID or all of the above!

Russian Visa

Citizens of most countries require a visa to enter Russia, for which the application should be made  at least a month before your trip . For most travellers a tourist visa will be sufficient: these allow a stay of up to 30 days with one or two entries within that period. If you are planning to stay for longer than a month, there are business and other types of visas available. If you're just passing through, it's possible to get a transit visa, but as these allow limited time in the country and are the same price as a regular tourist visa, it's usually best to go for that option.

What will I need for the visa?

  • Passport  valid for at least six months after your return date.
  • Visa invitation letter  (known as a "visa support") provided by your hotel or hostel (sometimes for free, sometimes for a fee), or if you're not staying in one of these, they can be bought from travel or visa agencies (prices vary).
  • Completed application form  including everywhere you've visited over the past 10 years: make sure to fill it in carefully! Find the electronic visa application form at the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation  and make sure to keep a note of the identity number given to you.
  • Handling fee  (amount varies depending on visa type, how you quickly you need it and the agency used to acquire your visa).
  • One or two  passport-sized p hotos .

How do I get the visa?

With all of your necessary documentation, you'll then need to go to your Russian embassy or dedicated visa agency: when you first visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website linked above, the Contacts link under your selected country will show the official offices for visa applications. You may also be asked to bring bank statements, birth certificates of children travelling with you and proof of travel insurance , so make sure to double check what you need in advance.

What happens when I arrive?

On arrival in Russia, you'll be given an  immigration form  produced electronically at passport control.  Make sure to hold on to this  as you'll need it both to  register your stay  and to  leave the country .

Register your visa : every visitor to Russia must register their visa within seven business days of arrival. If you're in Moscow for less than seven business days, you are exempt, and if you leave Moscow, you must register again in any city where you stay seven days or longer. It is your accommodation  that is obligated to register your visa  for you: whether this is your hotel, hostel, landlord, friend or family. Visa Requirements for Official OR Diplomatic Passport Holders

Official or diplomatic passport holders.

U.S. government employees on official international travel are required to use their official (or diplomatic) U.S. Government passports unless the Department of State advises otherwise.

Same Day or Emergency 24 Hour Passport Processing. Rush visa processing. Obtain Certified Copies of U.S. Birth Certificate. Cellular/Satellite Phone Rental Available for International Travel.

A visa is an endorsement or stamp placed by an official of a foreign country into the official U.S. passport that allows the bearer to enter that foreign country. Application for a visa should be submitted at least 3 to 4 weeks before departure date , especially around the holiday season.

VISA REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION FORMS

IMPORTANT NOTICE: U.S. Passports will No Longer be Issued Abroad/Overseas: Effective April 8, 2002, U.S. passports will no longer be issued abroad, except those required for urgent travel. All passports will be issued in the United Stated using the new more secure photo-digitized imaging system. Because this technology is not available at the U.S. embassies and consulates, overseas passport issuance is being transferred to the National Passport Processing Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This new procedure will increase the processing time at U.S. embassies and consulates. U.S. embassies and consulates will continue to issue passports that are needed for urgent travel. However, such passports will be limited in validity, and cannot be extended.

Why use an official passport?

  • According to the Department of State, there are several reasons why an official passport should be used when traveling on behalf on the U.S. Government:
  • Required visas – A visa will not be granted for entry into a foreign country when the reason for travel to that country is stated as official business and the personal (tourist) passport is presented. In addition, a diplomatic or official visa cannot be stamped in a personal passport.
  • Foreign country entry and exit – Some countries will deny entry at the border to someone seeking to enter on official government business who presents a personal passport. Also, problems may occur upon departure from a foreign country.
  • Violation of sovereignty – Use of a personal passport when traveling in an official capacity misrepresents the true purpose for which the traveler has entered the country. This can have serious and adverse affects on our reciprocal relations with foreign countries. Employees of foreign governments must use official passports when they come to the U.S. on behalf of their governments. This is a traditional practice among governments and an internationally recognized policy.
  • Security concerns – Should there be a problem while you are in the host country, the official passport provides quicker access to officials of the host country government and greater protection.

How to apply for an official passport

A traveler must meet both of these requirements to apply for an official passport.

Passport processing times are down again. Here's how long you'll wait.

Portrait of Nathan Diller

If you need a new passport before your next trip, you’re in luck.

U.S. passport processing times dropped again this week, the State Department said. If your application is received Monday or later, you’ll wait between seven and 10 weeks for routine service, down from eight to 11 weeks. Expedited service – which comes with a $60 fee – will take between three and five weeks, dropping from five to seven weeks previously.

“As more Americans are traveling internationally again, we are directing resources to meet the unprecedented demand seen so far in 2023,” the State Department said in an update on its website .

Those estimates do not include mailing times.

“We are aggressively recruiting and hiring across our passport agencies and centers,” the update said. “Our passport team members nationwide contribute tens of thousands of hours of overtime a month to issue the millions of passports sought by traveling Americans.” The State Department also opened a satellite office to assist with processing.

Passport renewal can be a pain: What to know about applications, appointment wait times

The changes come just over a month after wait times last dropped . Over 24 million passport cards and books were issued between October 2022 and September 2023, marking a record.

How to get a passport?

The process for passport application varies depending on your situation.

According to the U.S. Department of State, you should  apply in person  if:

◾ You are applying for your first passport.

◾ You are applying for your child who is under 16.

◾ Your previous passport was issued when you were under 16.

◾ Your previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged.

◾ Your previous passport was issued over 15 years ago.

In these cases, you must fill out form DS-11 (found  online ) and print it to apply in person.

If none of the above apply, you may be able to get a new passport by mail. According to the State Department, you are eligible to  renew by mail  if:

◾ You have your most recent passport (and it is not damaged) and can submit it with your application.

◾ Your most recent passport was never reported lost or stolen.

◾ Your most recent passport was issued in the last 15 years.

◾ Your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older.

◾ Your most recent passport is issued to your current name, or you can present a document – such as a marriage certificate or divorce papers – as evidence of a legal name change.

◾ "It was not limited to less than the normal 10-year period of validity for an adult passport due to multiple passport thefts or losses, or due to issues with passport damage or mutilation."

In these cases, fill out form DS-82 (found  online ).

What documents do I need to apply for a passport?

The State Department says these are  the documents you need  if you're applying for a passport:

◾ Application form.

◾ Personal  documents including  but not limited to proof of citizenship, an acceptable photo ID, photocopies of both.

◾ Passport photo.

Real ID Check: What You Need for Air Travel in 2025 and When You'll Need It

Starting next year, if you plan on flying domestically, you'll need a Real ID instead of an old driver's license.

passports travel documents application

If you want to fly on or after May 7, 2025 with a driver's license, you'll need a Real ID version of it.

After several delays , it looks as if the Real ID requirement for flying domestically within the US will take effect in about 9 months -- on May 7, 2025 . If you're planning air travel in 2025 on or after that date, an old driver's license will no longer work. You'll need a Real ID or other form of acceptable identification to get through the Transportation Security Authority's security check.

The  Real ID Act , which enforces consistent and secure standards for identification used in air travel and entering federal facilities, was passed in 2007. After it takes effect next May, US residents over 18 will need to present a Real ID-enhanced driver's license or another federally approved identification -- like a passport -- to fly domestically.

Here's everything you need to know about Real ID, including where to apply, what you'll need to bring and what happens if you don't have one after the 2025 deadline. For more on travel regulations, find out how to renew your passport online  and the  steps to take if your flight is delayed or canceled .

What is a Real ID and how do I know if I have one?

Real ID enhanced California driver's license

Real IDs won't be required at airport security until 2025.

Essentially, Real ID is an enhanced version of your standard state driver's license or identification card, intended to help authorities crack down on terrorism and identity fraud.

Today, all 50 states and the District of Columbia are complying with Real ID standards, the Department of Homeland Security said. If you recently renewed your driver's license, it's likely already compliant. If it's been a few years, you'll probably have to get it updated.

Stars on the Real ID

Real ID-approved licenses will have one of these stars in the upper-right corner.

You can tell by looking at your license: If there is a gold, black or white star in the upper-right corner, you have a Real ID. (There are some minor variations -- California places a white star over the state's bear logo, while Maine puts it in an outline of the state.)

How do I apply for a Real ID card in my state?

Whatever state agency issued your driver's license is responsible for distributing Real IDs. The paperwork required will vary but typically it includes proof of identity and status as a US resident or citizen, proof of your Social Security number and multiple proofs of your current address.

Originals or hard copies of documentation -- birth certificate, Social Security card, US passport -- are required, with photocopies and screenshots not accepted. Check your state's driver's licensing agency website for more specifics.

After you apply, you should receive a temporary paper ID until your Real ID-compliant license arrives in the mail about three or four weeks later.

With a few exceptions, the cost of getting a Real ID-compliant license is the same as renewing your license or non-driving identification card.

What happens if I don't get a Real ID before the deadline?

Beginning in May 2025 -- unless the deadline is extended again -- federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration will accept only Real ID-approved licenses and identification cards "for purposes of accessing federal facilities," according to DHS.

That includes airport security checkpoints.

Without one, US adults will have to show a valid passport, even to fly domestically, or one of these other forms of ID :

  • US Department of Defense ID
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
  • Enhanced Driver's License , issued by  Michigan ,  Minnesota ,  New York ,  Vermont  and  Washington state

Real ID sample

An example of a driver's license with a Real ID logo.

Not having a Real ID-compliant license won't affect other uses of a driver's license, including verifying an individual's ability to operate a vehicle or purchase alcohol, firearms or tobacco.

Interested in a second passport? Get ready to pay hundreds of thousands.

  • Henley & Partners reports a surge in Americans seeking secondary passports.
  • Obtaining a secondary passport is complex and costly, with varying requirements by country.
  • Applications require extensive paperwork and costs range from hundreds of thousands to over $1 million for couples, the firm said.

Insider Today

Global citizenship firm Henley & Partners has experienced a major uptick in Americans seeking secondary passports.

The increase started around the pandemic, but uncertainty over political tension and a rise in antisemitism have led application numbers to continually grow, a spokesperson for the firm told Business Insider.

While most people wouldn't decline a backup option in another country, the process of obtaining a secondary passport can be quite complicated — and expensive.

Business Insider spoke to Judi Galst, who manages Henley & Partners' New York office, about the general steps required to get a secondary passport.

The specific requirements vary by country, Galst said. Here's what you should keep in mind.

Finding the right place

Galst said it's important to consider how fast you need the passport.

If you're planning ahead for a retirement home, you might be OK with waiting a few years. But, for example, if you're concerned about the presidential election turnout, you might want a more immediate backup option.

"The Caribbean is going to be your fastest path," Galst said. "Right now, we usually see approvals in a country like Antigua somewhere between four to six months after we submit the application."

Other programs, like Portugal, have a backlog of applicants and could take up to two years.

Galst said another important consideration is the applicant's intention. Those looking for full access to country benefits and lifelong natural rights would want citizenship. If not, a residency could work. Residencies allow you to live in the country of residence up to 12 months a year. But it usually comes with conditions or requirements to maintain the residence and it has to be renewed.

Countries like Spain are slow for citizenship approval, but have a relatively quick path to residence through investment, Galst said. Applications for Spain residence by investment are approved in about 20 business days after submission, she said.

Related stories

Lots and lots of paperwork

Galst said many programs will require that the client open a bank account in the country where they are applying for residence. You may also have to obtain a tax ID number, which can be a complex process, she said.

Clients may also need to provide FBI and police reports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, bank statements, a copy of Social Security cards, driver's licenses, passports, bank reference letters, professional reference letters, or résumés. The requirements vary depending on the country.

Galst said certain documents also require an apostille, which is a specific type of certification that permits a document created in one country to be used in another country.

Once you complete the paperwork, Galst said applicants sometimes have to provide medical records, do HIV testing, and go through an interview.

Be prepared to pay a high price

Galst programs generally have three categories of investments: real estate, financial instruments, and nonrefundable contributions.

To apply for a Portugal golden visa, one qualifying option is to make a nonrefundable contribution to an approved cultural organization, Galst said.

In the Caribbean, you can make a contribution toward funds the government designed to help invest in varying sectors, like infrastructure. Some Caribbean countries also allow you to qualify for citizenship by purchasing real estate, Galst said.

Galst said the cost range also varies depending on different countries.  The Caribbean has the lowest cost,  and it requires a $200,000 contribution or $300,000 investment in real estate per application.

"Whether a dependent child can be included is going to vary depending upon are they in full time school, what their age is, what the age cutoff is for the program," Galst explained.

Galst said a popular but pricey option is Malta's Citizenship by Naturalisation by direct investment, which requires a 750,000 Euro nonrefundable contribution to the Maltese economy. Applicants must pay 50,000 Euros for each qualifying dependent, lease or purchase a property in Malta for about six years, and donate 10,000 Euros to a Maltese charity.

"So a couple can be at a million plus," Galst said.

European passport and EU health certificate. How to travel with your pet

Eu rules allow domestic dogs, cats, and ferrets to travel between eu member countries with documents based on a standard template, which can be obtained from any licensed veterinarian.

Federico Baccini</a> <a class="social twitter" href="https://twitter.com/@federicobaccini" target="_blank">@federicobaccini</a>

Brussels – For pet owners, vacations also mean dealing with the problem of where and with whom to leave their pets while travelling by plane, train, ship or bus to their summer destination. However, a solution is available for those who wish to take their pets with them; all that is required is a few documents to allow pets to travel to other EU member states (and beyond). All you need is a European passport or an EU health certificate.

Animali Passaporto Ue Viaggio

UE regulations allow dogs, cats, and ferrets to travel between the 27 EU member countries and from non-EU countries to EU countries. This requires a “clearly readable” microchip or tattoo (if applied before July 3, 2011), the rabies vaccine , proof of treatment against the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm if the destination is free of this tapeworm (Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway and Northern Ireland) and a document : A European passport if travelling within the EU or from Northern Ireland, or an EU health certificate if travelling from a non-EU country.

The European pet passport  is a document that follows a standard Union template and contains a description and details of the animal: microchip or tattoo code, rabies vaccination record, contact details of the owner and the veterinarian who issued the passport. A European pet passport can be obtained from any veterinarian licensed by the competent authorities and is valid for life , provided the animal’s rabies vaccination is current. The Union recognizes pet passports issued by Andorra, Switzerland, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and the Vatican City State.

Animali Passaporto Ue Viaggio

The EU Health Certificate , on the other hand, is a type of document that contains specific information (identity, health, rabies vaccinations) and is still based on a standard EU template, but in this case, it is required if travelling from a non-EU country to an EU one. The EU health certificate must be issued by an official veterinarian in the country of departure no more than ten days before arrival in the Union , and it is valid for four months for intra-EU travel or until the rabies vaccination expires (whichever comes first). In addition, a written statement that the animal’s transfer is due to noncommercial reasons must be attached. As of January 1, 2021, EU pet passports issued in Britain (not Northern Ireland) are no longer valid for travel to EU member countries or Northern Ireland , and an EU health certificate is therefore required.

  • If you are filing Form I-765 together with Form I-485, you must specify your eligibility category as (c)(9), not as (c)(26), and pay the Form I-485 filing fee. Follow the Form I-485 filing instructions to avoid processing delays.
  • If you file a Form I-765 together with a Form I-485 at the filing address for Form I-765 category (c)(26), USCIS will reject your Form I-485 and any corresponding fees. Additionally, if you included the fees for both forms on the same check or money order, USCIS may also reject your Form I-765 for category (c)(26).
  • Submit supporting evidence (see chart below). Submitting sufficient supporting evidence will minimize the likelihood that USCIS will need to send you a request for more evidence.

If you submit any documents containing a foreign language to USCIS, you must also submit a full English language translation that the translator has certified as complete and accurate. The translator must also certify that they are competent to translate from the foreign language into English.

When filing Form I-765, please mail it to the proper location based on the chart below.

For your convenience, you may file Form I-765 with Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status, or with both Form I-539 and the Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, filed for the H-1B principal nonimmigrant. However, we will not make a decision on your Form I-765 until after we have adjudicated your Form I-539 and determined whether you are eligible for the underlying H-4 nonimmigrant status, whether your spouse is eligible for the underlying H-1B nonimmigrant status, or both. Go to the Filing Form I-765 with Other Forms page for more information on filing these forms together

You will not be authorized to work until USCIS approves your Form I-765. Once your employment authorization is approved, the expiration date on your Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766 EAD) should be the same date as the expiration date on your most recent Form I-94 indicating your H-4 nonimmigrant status. Generally, you are only authorized to work through the expiration date on your EAD. If you are still eligible for employment authorization after that date, you should file for a renewal EAD by submitting another Form I-765. You cannot file for a renewal EAD more than 180 days before your original EAD expires

You may qualify for automatic extension of your existing employment authorization. See our Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension page for more information on this automatic extension.

Some unauthorized practitioners may try to take advantage of you by claiming they can file an EAD. These same individuals may ask that you pay them to file such forms. To learn the facts about how to protect yourself and your family from scams, please visit www.uscis.gov/avoidscams .
