Hi there! I've never been to Maui so I'm wondering if it's hard to drive in the mountains at night? I know for the sunset / stargazing tour we go up when it is still bright but how about after it finishes? Will it be dark and dangerous?

After the stargazing tour finishes, it will be dark. If you follow certain rules, it will not be dangerous. Let me explain. The road is winding, meandering down the Haleakala mountain, turning this way and that. But at that hour, no one is coming up… more

I never heard of this tour until a colleague mentioned it. My husband and I were lucky enough to join this tour and I was absolutely amazed. The drive up to the summit had many switchbacks and am glad Jan was well versed in this terrain. She provided history and scenery information on the drive up. Once the sunset and it was time to view the stars, Jan lit up! She was so knowledgeable about all the galaxies, nebulae and clusters. You can feel her passion for what she does. We were well prepared with the email and notification texts. She was mindful of the time; if the group wanted to see more she gave it to us! If you are a fan of the celestial bodies, it's a great tour! Thank you Jan for having me and Morgan, we loved the experience!!

Maui Stargazing was an awesome experience. My review is delayed. We were there in October 2023. Jan provided information in advance to help us make the most of the experience. We grabbed dinner from the food trucks, relaxed and enjoyed the view and conversation traveling to the top of Haleakala, making a couple of stops along the way. Our final stop was less populated where we sat comfortably and enjoyed spectacular views of the sunset and finally, stargazing. Not only was Jan a wonderful tour guide, host and teacher; We lucked out with an amazing group of 7 diverse people who shared an interest in Hawaii, Nature and Stargazing. The group dynamic really made this one of my favorite experiences in Maui. And having warm, clean clothes provided for this one night of cold temperatures was a huge benefit. I highly recommend this tour. And if you're in Maui on the Pride of America Cruise, it's easy to rent a car or UBER to the pickup spot and then back to the ship. This is not listed on the ship's list of excursions, so you just need to make your own arrangements.

Maui star gazing review I would definitely recommend Star Gazing but not with maui Star Gazing. Our tour guide treated all of us as if we were children.  Very snarky and rude.  We were all grown adults and were talked down to like 5th graders the entire trip. Sorry to hear the experience was not as thrilling as you had hoped. I strive to be kind while asking have guests to follow the rules designed for safety and protecting the equipment from sticky spills. One the evening in question we had great observing conditions and viewed planets, nebulae and star clusters and the summer band of the Milky Way settling into the west. Everyone was warm and safe. I will strive to present the rules in a kinder manner. Thanks for the feedback.

Had a blast and learned a lot with Jan as our guide to the cosmos. The extraordinary views through the telescope included multiple galaxies, the moon, Venus, Jupiter with four of its moons, Saturn, star clusters, nebulae, and more. Jan's love for astronomy is infectious. I'll book another session with her the next time I'm in Maui!

Jan's Stargazing Tour was an epic adventure of the cosmos.

I surprised my husband and close friend with this excursion to Maui Stargazing and it certainly lived up to and surpassed our excitement and expectation. All week, we were so concerned about the weather on the peak of Haleakala and on the day of the trip, Jan, the astronomer and tour guide, was in close contact with me about the weather forecast, her expertise mixed with her expectation, and her transparency about Haleakala's rapid changing climate. Obviously, weather is mostly unpredictable and we decided to gamble on Jan's experience. She gave us an overview of how some of the previous nights had gone and what she did to accommodate her guests. She also texted me pics of the peak as the day went on and satellite images that reassured us. What a PAYOFF. What was expected to be 29% coverage was actually a perfectly clear oasis of stars, planets, constellations and everything else. Jan expertly operates her 12" Dobsonian telescope and gave a clearly thoughtful opening speech after the sun sets and around dinner time. We were able to access what Jan called her "favorite spot for stars" and we got to stay there as long as we pleased. Jan was very clear on meeting times and very clear in her emails and texts about how to prepare with food, clothing, driving, and where to go and how to park SO DO NOT MISS HER EMAILS OR TEXTS! We had originally counted on the Kula Market (where the meeting place is) to have dinner options, but this was more a gift shop. Before we got to the meet, there was a really nice local market where we could pick up dinner. We ultimately set out with an arrival goal of 30 mins before meet time to be able to pick up our food. I would suggest this too, unless you have a cooler. During pandemic times, Jan is not providing rides. This is explicitly clear on her website and confirmation emails. So bring a driver who is okay with driving to a peak of the volcano. It was STUNNING to drive. Jan also escorts you up in her sprinter. She took us to multiple points on the peak where we could spend 20-30 mins looking all around Maui from the top and into the crater of Haleakala. I am still amazed. When we got to our destination, she has a short speech about important things the tour will do with her and then we are given an expert guide to the stars with her telescope, laser pointer, ipad with imagery about what you're looking for and the relevance of the stars to the season in which you're viewing them. She was phenomenal with how quickly she could orient to the celestial bodies and made viewing nebulae even more exciting by switching through her filters to give us different examples of the view. We saw FIVE galaxies! We got in all the goal celestial bodies and even a handful of others that were Jan's favorites. After that we stayed longer to just enjoy a night of the stars and the milky way. Jan, herself, was friendly, knowledgeable, caring, and deeply passionate about her job. It is crystal clear that she cares about your experience as a customer, too. Well done. This became, easily, the biggest highlight of our 9 days in Maui. MUCH RECOMMENDATION. By the time we got back to our hotel, Jan had written a thank-you email that had the names of everything we saw, links to the peak cams and so much more additional information.

The best experience we had on our whole trip!!!! Amazing fun from start to finish. Jan was so knowledgeable and personable. We had plenty of time to explore the area, had a wonderful sunset view, and amazing view time.

If you already know a lot about astronomy or *really* want to look into a telescope in an amazing spot -- one of the best in the world to do so -- then you'll love this. I didn't. I loved looking at the stars, and I'd definitely recommend staying until after the sun goes down to stargaze. But for the money for the tour, I had hoped for more than a quick 10min explanation at the beginning and a quick shuffle by the telescope. It felt kind of like checking off a list - 'let's move the telescope here and look at this," and our group quickly got up, looked, and then passed to the next person. When I asked questions, I felt like I was intruding, and I left with more questions than when I showed up. For more information we were told to look at the iPad. When she used the pointer to show the constellations, that was also just super quick. There was such an opportunity to help attendees share the wonder of the people who imagined those constellations, but that wasn't part of the evening. Basically, it's an expensive tour to stay warm (which is helpful, it's nice to have warm clothing) and quickly look through a powerful telescope multiple times. If that's what you want, you'll love it. I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't already a knowledgeable astronomy buff, and certainly not to most kids; I don't think there's enough explanation/guiding to keep younger people (or even me) engaged. That said, it's an absolutely gorgeous spot, and the night sky is amazing, so go there! Go during the day and walk around; if you can stay for sunset then that, too, because it's magnificent; if you have time and can stay and marvel at the stars and planets and the milky way, definitely do so.

Jan has developed a fantastic stargazing adventure. It was well planned to the smallest detail. She is knowledgeable and her passion and joy of astronomy permeates the evening. She strives for everyone to enjoy learning about heavenly bodies viewed from the phenomenal location of Haleakala. I live in rater dark sky Midwest but I had never seen so many stars. The 12 inch telescope was great for viewing stellar objects but what impressed me the most was the one used for photographing nebulae, constellations and galaxies. Itlayered images together and used WiFi connections to an app on our phones so we could each view to telescopic image on our phones. She also had tablets mounted on her van so we could view larger images and we downloaded these images to our phones. The details included ski pants, parkas, fingerless gloves, hot beverages of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The whole excursion far exceeded my expectations! Ernie Ferguson, Ph.D.

Thanks Jan for an awesome stargazing trip even thou the clouds did not cooperate 100% of the time. We will bring our big fan next time ;) We both enjoyed it and highly recommend this to any one visiting Maui. Use Jan's stargazing tour as an opportunity to visit Haleakala National Park and summit if you don't already have it on your Maui todo list. Or if it is on your list, as it was ours go up earlier in the day and hike and site see on your own before meeting Jan and her awesome Mercedes Benz Stargazing Van at the Kula lodge and market. Jan is incredibly knowledgeable about the heavens and provides an excellent educational and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Jan has coats and winter pants, hats, gloves, coffees, cocoa, teas chairs and really runs a fantastic stargazing trip. Mahalo Jan!

If you love the stars, moon and celestial objects, this tour is perfect for you! It's a bit of a long tour starting at 3pm and ending at 10pm. Plan ahead and bring snacks and light dinner. Jan provides ski jackets and pants (gloves and hats also) as it does get chilly at 10,000+ elevation. We were able to see great views of the moon, Saturn, many star clusters, and a super bright falling star (meteor). Communication was excellent from the beginning after booking tour to day prior reminder, day of information and after tour information on all objects seen! Jan is knowledgeable and all around great person.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Yoshi was knowledgeable and a fantastic guide. There are coats and blankets to use once you are at the top. Yoshi sets up chairs, takes pictures, provides hot tea or coffee and donuts, ... and does just the right amount of talking that provides information without disturbing your time to enjoy the whole experience. A packed dinner is necessary although we made a stop at the Kula Marketplace where food was available to purchase before getting to Haleakala. We are so glad we did this tour!!!

Tour was great from start to finish. Yoshi was kind and knowledgeable. He thought of everything from hot tea, candy, and Krispy cream donuts. It was a very windy evening and he changed up plans on the fly to get us ... out of the wind and get us the best stargazing experience he could. I would definitely book a tour with Yoshi again.

What an experience

Yoshi was a fantastic guide that provided us with such a memorable experience. He supplied us with coats and blankets and snacks so that we were comfortable. He also showed us constellations and stars through his telesco ... pe. If you are fascinated by the stars you will never forget this experience. Must try!

General tips for stargazing in hawaii.

Stargazing in Hawaii is super cool!

Want the best views? Aim for times when the sky is clear. Usually, this is during the dry season, from April to October .

Now, if you want to see the stars up close, a telescope is your best friend. Don’t have one? No worries! There are apps for your phone that can help you spot stars and planets.

If you like taking pictures, a good camera can help you capture the magic.

Oh, and remember! Hawaii has many plants and animals that we need to care for. When we’re out at night, we should be quiet and not leave any trash behind.

This way, we can enjoy the beauty without harming nature.

Oahu Stargazing Spots

Oahu is a great place for checking out the stars, and I’ve got two awesome spots for you!

First, let’s talk about Kaena Point State Park . It’s a bit out of the way, but that’s why it’s perfect.

Fewer city lights mean more stars! The park is easy to get to, and once you’re there, you’ll see stars and planets you can’t see from many other places. It’s like a special starry show just for you!

Hanauma Bay is best known for its sparkling blue waters and colorful marine life. But at night, the bay’s clear skies become a canvas for bright stars, making it a fantastic spot for stargazing adventures.

Then there’s Diamond Head Lookout . This spot is famous for its amazing views, and not just of the ocean.

At night, the sky here is a beautiful blanket of stars. The lookout is high up, which makes it even better for stargazing. You can see loads of constellations from here.

So, grab a blanket and some snacks, and get ready for a starry night on Oahu!

Kauai is a dream for anyone who loves watching the stars, and I’m gonna tell you the best places to go on the Garden Island!

First, check out Kokee State Park . It’s high up in the mountains, which means clearer and better views of the stars. Being up high is like being closer to the stars!

Sometimes, local folks and visitors gather here for stargazing events. It’s super fun to join and learn from them.

Waimea Canyon on Kauai is often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and it’s not just famous for its stunning landscapes, but also for its starry skies.

When night falls, this beautiful spot offers a front-row seat to a dazzling display of stars, making stargazing a must-do activity here.

Then, there’s Polihale State Park . Imagine lying on a beach, listening to the waves, and gazing up at a sky full of stars.

From here, you can even see the Milky Way – that’s our galaxy! It looks like a milky band of stars stretching across the sky.

Kauai’s night sky is waiting for you. So grab a blanket, maybe a telescope, and enjoy the view!

Big Island Stargazing Spots

If you’re into stars, the Big Island is like a giant treasure map for stargazing!

Let’s start with the Mauna Kea Observatories . This place is famous all over the world for looking at stars. They have super cool telescopes, and you can even take tours to learn more about space.

But here’s a heads up: the observatories are really high up! Some people might feel a bit dizzy because of the altitude, so be sure to take it slow.

Another amazing spot is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . Imagine this: watching stars while there’s a glow from lava flows nearby. How cool is that?

The sky is clear, and the light from the lava makes it feel like you’re on another planet.

Plus, you can even join a stargazing tour at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort .

So, if you’re on the Big Island and want a starry adventure, you’ve got some awesome spots to pick from!

5 tips for a stellar maui stargazing adventure.

Maui is well-known for its beautiful beaches and incredible scenery. But for those who enjoy astronomy, the Maui stargazing cannot be beat.

While all of Hawaii is well known for having some of the best conditions for stargazing in the world, Maui in particular is where you can get the best views and ideal opportunities for taking night sky photos.

If you are planning a visit to Maui and would like to experience the best possible stargazing, please keep reading for five helpful tips. Of course, these are also great for locals who are hoping to check out the stars and planets, or try their hand at night sky photography.

Tip #1: Timing is Key

While stargazing in Maui is pretty impressive all year round, there are times of the year, as well as specific hours of the night, when it’s at its best. In general, the summer and winter months are the best for stargazing in Maui—this is when skies are the clearest and you can see the most stars and planets. More specifically, if you are interested in seeing the meteor showers, they are the most active in the summer. For instance, the Perseids meteor shower can be seen from around July 17 to August 24.

The core of the Milky Way galaxy makes it's way across the Maui night sky. This was during a meteor shower and if you look close, you can see the meteor making it's way through Earth's atmosphere as a green streak. Hawaii has some of the best skies on the planet due to it's remote location in the Pacific and seeing the galaxy with the naked eye makes you feel rather small but a reminder that we're all one.

Collector's Edition of 100

If your Maui stargazing bucket list includes seeing the Milky Way, book your trip from April to August. This is when the Milky Way is most visible from Maui for 4-plus hours every night. As it notes on the AstroRover website , the Milky Way Galactic Center is visible in April starting at 11:20 p.m., in May at 9:22 p.m., and in June and July starting at 8:32 p.m.

If at all possible, try to schedule your Maui stargazing adventure at times when the moon will not be full; this will help to enhance the visibility of the stars and other celestial objects. Also, keep an eye on the weather forecast for when you are here. If clouds are coming in around 11 p.m., try to start stargazing earlier in the evening.

Tip #2: Find the Ideal Location

To have the best Maui stargazing experience possible, you’ll want to find the darkest areas on the island. Places near resorts and neighborhoods will tend to have what is known as light pollution, so if possible try to get to areas away from businesses and homes.

In addition, higher elevations will provide extra clarity for your stargazing experience. One of the best Maui stargazing locations is the summit of Haleakalā National Park. Other recommended locations are Kalahaku Overlook, Lipoa Point, and Honomanu Bay.

One of the most epic ideas I had for an image and it really just kind of happened so I had to figure out a way to pull this one off. If you look closely, you can also see the international space station in the upper corner of this one too

Tip #3: Come Prepared

You may be perfectly comfortable in a t-shirt, shorts and sandals during the warm days on Maui, but at night our temperatures can drop to the point where you’ll want to dress more warmly. To make your Maui stargazing experience pleasant and not chilly, dress in, or bring along extra layers including a sweatshirt and long pants.

Also, pack blankets or chairs, and if you have them, binoculars and/or a telescope. If you plan to head off the beaten track at any point during the evening, be sure to pack a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. A few snacks and some beverages like water, coffee and/or cocoa are also great additions to your Maui stargazing.

There are few things as epic as the milky way galaxy rising and seeing this with your own eyes! Secret Beach here on Maui is quite the treat at night

Tip #4: Bring Some Night Sky Knowledge

To help identify the celestial objects you see during your Maui stargazing adventure, you might want to download a stargazing app onto your phone. Vito Technology has posted a helpful review of 20 of the top stargazing apps, many of which are free to download, and available for both iOS and Android.

Also, if you are hoping to see a meteor shower, try to do some research ahead of time to know where in the sky you should look for the shooting stars. You can also look up how to find well-known constellations like the Big Dipper, Orion’s Belt, and others.

Tip #5: Night Sky Photos

Although it is possible to capture photos of your Maui stargazing experiences on your phone, it can be challenging to get decent night sky images. A DSLR camera as well as a tripod and a wide-angle lens, are ideal for astro photography.

Pack a good dose of patience as well, as getting great photos of the nighttime sky—especially fleeting objects like shooting stars—can challenge even more experienced photographers. In general, you’ll want to use a wide aperture, and slow shutter speed, and you will probably find it takes a lot of trial and error to find the best settings for your shot.

If you find that taking photos is more frustrating than enjoyable, no worries—we have a lot of beautiful astrophotography prints on our website that were taken from a number of locations around Maui, including the stunning Makena Milky Way .

Whether you are a lover of the cosmos, or want a memento of your Maui stargazing adventure, you can browse online or stop by the gallery to say hello and check out our selection in person.

So many elements just happened to come together for this shot. Some may think is is multiple images but it's just one shot. The moon was very low on the horizon and we also had fires in central Maui which created a bit of a haze. The haze in turns gets illuminated by the moonlight and it really brings this scene all together into an infinite paradise.

Best time of year for stargazing in Maui

Everyone loves a vacation to Hawaii right? It’s a great place to have a meal, enjoy a nice night view, and a wonderful place to explore. Plus, to be quite honest with you, Hawaii is a popular place to visit all year long. The summer may be a bit on the hot side, but Hawaii makes up for this with beautiful beach side resorts.

While Hawaii may be a great place to go all year round, the same rules don’t exactly apply for stargazing in Maui. So in this section, we’ll show you how to enhance your vacation schedule in a way that lines up perfectly for stargazing in Maui.

So what is the best time?

There is no exact time of the year where you’ll see the most stars, but you should always keep an eye on the moon. This is due to the fact that a new moon – or anytime after a full moon really – will be the best time to do some stargazing in Maui.

The moon will actually add some light pollution so you’ll want to avoid that. Aside from that, you’ll really be able to go during anytime of the year!

If you really want to get some good viewing, try to look for a meteor shower. This will create some really cool experiences, and you’ll be left with a night sky that really blows your mind away.

This is due to the fact that the location is far away from light pollution, and light pollution aside, you’ll be almost 3,000 feet above sea level. The height is great because you don’t need to do too much climbing to see the stars in a really impressive way.

Joey’s Kitchen

So you want to eat a crazy Hawaiian meal, huh? If you do, please do yourself a favor and head on down to Joey’s Kitchen. Ululani’s Hawaiian Ice

Have you ever had a Hawaiian ice? If you have -and just thought it was a brand of ice- well then you’re sadly mistaken. For some reason Hawaii is really great at making tasty ice, so while you’re there, you should definitely give this popular dessert location a try. It can help cool you off, but it will also make your tastebuds dance.

This is why it’s an absolute must to head on down to MauiGrown Coffee. You’ll be able to see beautiful coffee farms while you choose from around 50 flavors of coffee. Not a bad way to start your day, right?

With some really great places to stay and eat, stargazing in Maui is really one of the best places to stargaze in the world.

When you’re in Maui, it’s like you’re in a different world. The island provides some great places to checkout the night sky, but it also has a lot of great things to do during the day. Plus, you obviously can’t be stargazing the entire time, so in this section we’ll be taking a look at some great things to do during the day.

Hike a volcano

If you’re someone who loves to do a bit of adventuring, feel free to hike any of the volcanos that we mentioned. During the day the experience can be quite interesting, and you’ll also shed off some calories from all the fantastic meals. Climbing a volcano is not like climbing a mountain, which means that you’ll have a truly unique experience.

Black sand beaches

The beauty of Maui is that the location features some of the most popular black sand beaches. The sand is a really interesting shade, and to be quite honest with you it’s something you’ll be dying to get back too. The landscape surrounding most of the beaches makes photography an excellent choice, so if you want to take a break (or selfie) head on down to the coast for a really great beach experience.

Do you like surfing?

The typical stigma around Hawaii in general is that the “surf is up.” So if you’re a surfer, or even if you want to give surfing a try, take some time to head on down to Kaanapali surf school. The instructors there are great, and they can really have you shredding the waves in absolutely no time at all.

Lahaina Historic Trail

If you’re a history buff, or someone who loves to learn, please take a tour of the Lahaina Historic Trail. Keep in mind that there is a lot of walking involved, but you’ll be welcomed by a page right out of history. Starting at the Lahaina museum, you’ll be able to experience the vast history of Hawaii. If you will be doing this activity, just make sure that you plan a whole day.

Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park is an excellent place to watch the sun rise. The crater will reflect some awesome colors, and if you want a beautiful picture in Maui this is the place to get it. The volcanic perimeter makes for some really great camera angle, and it’s very difficult to find a better view anywhere on the planet. So do yourself a favor, and head on down to Haleakala National Park. Plus, once the day is done, hike up the volcano for some great stargazing.

Stargazing in Maui is a great thing to do. There is so much fun and adventure to be had during the day that you can really have a well rounded vacation and experience.

Make a quick stop here for some snacks and water. There is no food once you’re in the park.

Makawao Town

Approximate time: 1 hour

makawao town signboard

Just before Haleakala is a charming little town named Makawao.

Makawao is dubbed the biggest little town in Upcountry Maui and has its roots in the cattle industry.

In recent years, Makawao has evolved into a charming art town where you will find galleries and workshops of local artists, many with hawaii-inspired themes, as well as lots of tasty local food.

Hosmer Grove

Approximate time: 30 minutes

Hosmer Grove is located just outside the national park entrance at an elevation of 6,800 feet.

Here you will see trees from all around the world, including:

  • juniper and fir from North America
  • cedar and seigi pine from Japan and
  • eucalyptus trees from Australia

This is a short, relaxing, half-mile loop trail. It’s a great spot to stop and breathe in the fresh air from all the foliage around you.

It’s also a completely different landscape from the ones you’ll see later in the tour.

Halemau'u Crater Hike

This 8-mile trek is actually rated hard, but we suggest you just hike the first mile, then turn around the way you came.

You’ll still get a great view of a crater rim in the condensed version and you'll have more time for the rest of the activities on this tour!

Leleiwi Overlook

overlook from leleiwi

Head in the clouds? It will be at this overlook. Most visitors pass up Leleiwi Overlook but in our opinion, it’s actually one the best on the mountain!

At the lookout, watch as clouds roll by. In one moment, the fog will be so dense you can barely see the terrain around you, in the next, it will clear giving you a panoramic view of the crater. It’s truly a sight to behold!

Kalahaku Overlook

At this overlook, you’ll see the crater floor from a completely different perspective. It’s definitely worth a stop!

Pa Ka’oao Trail

This mini hike starts at the visitor center and takes you to an overlook with a great view of the crater.

The walk is just .5 miles, and it’s well worth it. If you’re thinking to yourself, “another overlook?” Yes, but we promise -- this one has great views!

Pro tip! The nearby visitor center is a great spot to use the restroom.

Sliding Sands Trail

As you make your way back from the summit, you can return to the visitor center parking lot to hike Sliding Sands Trail.

It is a rigorous 11-mile hike, but we recommend you just hike to the first switchback or until you get tired.

You don’t need to travel far to see the expansive view of the massive crater open up before you!

When you are ready to return, just retrace your steps back the same way you came.

If you plan on doing the whole hike, or a large portion of it, remember to bring water.

The area isn’t shaded and you’ll be walking for a long time.

NOTE: we recommend you do this hike during the day.

Watch the Sunset atop Red Hill - Summit

Approximate time: 20 minutes

haleakala

About a minute past the visitor center at the end of the road, you’ll find an overlook called Pu‘u‘ula‘ula or Red Hill.

This is the actual summit of Mount Haleakala at 10,023 feet above sea level.

From here, you can watch as the sun sets for the night into the arid, mars-like landscape of Haleakala.

Drive Down The Mountain

Approximate time: 45 minutes

As you descend the mountain we’ll tell you more stories and legends about the sacred Hawaiian volcano you’ve just explored.

There are only two stops on the return trip — a viewpoint and Upcountry Maui.

If it’s past sunset and dark out, you’ll want to skip these spots.

Final Viewpoint

Approximate time: 5 minutes

As we make our way to the bottom of the mountain there is a lookout that offers one final glimpse of Maui.

Feel free to pull over for a quick view or to snap a photo.

Optional Trip to Upcountry Farms

As we near the base of Haleakala, we will approach Upcountry Maui. In Upcountry Maui there are a couple of interesting farms in the area.

Here you can find the Ali’i Lavender Farm, a great place to unwind and enjoy the fragrance of lavender.

For plant lovers, there’s Kula Botanical Garden. And, for cheese enthusiasts check out Surfing Goat Dairy.

This spot has a petting zoo and sells gourmet goat cheese and specialty items like chocolate goat cheese truffles.

Finally, you can check Maui Winery which is famous for its pineapple wine.

PLEASE NOTE: many of these shops close by 5 p.m. If you’ve stayed to watch the sunset, you can always visit these another day.

When you’re in Hawaii, we ask that you act respectfully toward the locals, land, and wildlife. Please pick up your trash; never touch any marine life, plants, or other animals; and avoid spots that are unsafe. Hawaii’s natural resources are precious, it’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources.

16 May Take a Tour of the Stars at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa

Early Polynesians were guided to the Hawaiian Islands with the help of the stars and now Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa invites guests to take a Tour of the Stars with their very own rooftop astronomy program! Home to Hawaii’s only recreational telescope with a 16-inch reflector, the “Great White” HD telescope, sits nine stories up on a remote site of the hotel.

Named the World’s Top Hotel for Stargazing, experience Maui’s crystal clear skies with a night of stargazing and rooftop astronomy program! 8:00pm and 9:00pm nightly shows and a special Romance Tour at 10:00pm complete with sparkling wine and chocolate strawberries. Reservations are required.

Edward J. Mahoney, Director of Astronomy and NASA Solar System Ambassador, uses a computer to select an agenda, locate and identify 1,000 objects in the sky including stars, planets, galaxies and nebulae. You’ll learn to interpret with the unaided eye, then with giant astronomy binoculars, and on to the “Great White”.  It’s a cosmic experience for the entire family!

The Sterling Traveler

Stargazing at Hyatt Regency Maui

One of the lesser known activities at the Hyatt Regency Maui (at Kaanapali Beach/Lahaina) is stargazing – or what Hyatt calls the “Tour of the Stars”.  The first night staying at the Hyatt, I was absolutely amazed by the number of stars that are visible even with the ambient light walking around the property.  One of the problems about living in a populated area (as you probably know) is the light pollution preventing a good look at the stars.  Where I live I’m lucky to see 5 stars on any given night.   So when I saw that the Hyatt offered a stargazing activity I knew that we had to do it.

I went to the concierge to book the activity (without telling my girlfriend so it would be a surprise).  There are a couple of choices to make: an 8:00 or 9:00 time, or a 10:00 romance package for couples only.  The romance package includes a glass of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries for $40.  The earlier times are $25 for adults and $15 for children.  The prices are for Hyatt guests, and are slightly higher for non-Hyatt guests.  Space is limited to 14 people and I managed to snag the last two.  So if you are considering this activity be sure to book in advance.  Since I made the booking the day of there was no refunds, which tells me they are allowed up to 24 hours before but I didn’t ask.

We showed up at a little before 10:00 with IDs in hand since you have to be at least 21 years old.  Our “tour guide” showed up not too long after that, made sure everyone there was on his list. Then asked if everyone was at least 21 without checking our IDs.  I thought it was somewhat humorous since I was told several times that we would need them.

He walked us over to the elevators and told us to meet him on the 9th floor where he then took us to the fire exit and up to the roof.  The area has two telescopes and binoculars that are mounted.   Both telescopes were fairly large and a computer automatically found the celestial objects we wanted to see.

The guide was not only funny, he was able to keep things entertaining while still being educational.  We looked at a number of stars, including Vega and Arcturus.  Arcturus is interesting because in Hawaiian it is  H?k?le?a which means “Star of Happiness”.  Named because ancient Polynesians knew this star passed directly over the Hawaiian islands and would use this star to navigate to the Hawaiian islands.  We also saw Sagittarius (which I just saw a bunch of stars and couldn’t connect the stars correctly), and another constellation that totally looks like a baseball player.  Our star guide also showed us Andromeda (the closest galaxy to the Milky Way) which looks like a big blurry star but was still cool to see.

The finale of the night was a moonrise over the mountain to the East.  The sight was spectacular as we could see the light from the moon before it rose above the mountain.  It was one of the brightest moons I have ever seen. Our star guide focused the smaller of the two telescopes on the moon.  It was so cool being able to clearly see the craters, valleys and other features on the surface; however, it was so bright I wasn’t able to look at it for very long.  I was able to take a decent picture of it with my DSLR through the lens of the telescope.  Looking at other peoples’ smartphones, it looks like it may have been a little better but I didn’t have my phone on me (and I can’t begin to say how nice it was to unplug).  Feel free to leave a comment of a better way to take such a picture by holding the camera up to the telescope lens (other having a better camera/lens).

My Thoughts about Stargazing in Maui

If you have a free weekend night at the Hyatt Regency Maui, I would highly recommend doing the stargazing activity called Tour of the Stars.  It was one of the best things we decided to do while we stayed there.  I am still astounded by how many stars that were visible.  It was truly humbling to see how vast the universe is and how small we are in all of this.  I just wish I could have taken more pictures.

Sounds like an amazing unique experience. I dont know any other hotels that have such an experience. We live in a rural area where the stairs just pop out at you. We have a big milky way in view aswell

' src=

Stargazing at the Hyatt, Maui sounds like a fascinating experience. Definitely my idea of romantic experience, first gazing at the stars in the sky and then gazing at the stars in his or her eyes. You are right living in the cities we miss this simple yet blissful experience owing to pollution.

' src=

So fun. I have been up the observatory on the Big Island and it is shocking how many stars there are in the sky. Like you said, I usually see only about 5 stars when I am home. I wonder if you see more stars after sipping a glass of champagne or two. Ha!

' src=

Wow, never knew stargazing as an activity in Hawaii. Will keep that as a top thing to do 🙂

' src=

Wow do they really take tours with stargazing? When i was younger and with friends we have telescopes and astro book and we were spotting different constellation. But i guess its better if you have a guide to tell you what to look at and where to locate them.

' src=

It was quite nice having a guide. Also, it did not require my own telescope. It was quite romantic with champagne & chocolate-covered strawberries.

Travel | ka’anapali resort on west maui makes a comeback, the resorts, a few miles from fire-ravaged lahaina, are beckoning travelers with deals and new amenities.

maui stargazing tour reviews

It was 6:30 a.m. and I was heading out on a sunrise jog on the West Maui coast with Brad Kukral, the running ambassador for the Westin Maui Ka’anapali resort. Our group of early birds included casual runners like me and a few others who were more serious about the sport. Fortunately Kukral, a seasoned marathoner and a resort bartender, set an easy pace on the paved beach path that traces this scenic coastline.

As we ran steadily north from the resort, the morning light caught the mountaintops of neighboring Lanai and Molokai islands across the Pailolo and Au’au channels to the west. Lacy ocean waves gently lapped the shore and a few moored excursion catamarans bobbed placidly in the calm, windless conditions. To the east, the West Maui mountains were draped in mist and low-lying clouds, backlit by a rising sun. It was Maui’s morning magic at its best: quiet, serene and breathtakingly beautiful.

Reaching the Sheraton Maui Resort, set on the jagged volcanic Pu’u Keka’a (aka Black Rock) promontory, we maneuvered around a few buildings to transition from South Ka’anapali Beach to North Ka’anapali (aka Airport) Beach. Just past the historic Keka’a landing pier, I watched a family of sea turtles surface just offshore, raising their heads above the water as they commuted to their favorite feeding spot.

The most extraordinary thing about this morning jaunt along the beach was the emptiness of it all. Just a handful of people passed us on the path and the long expanse of Ka’anapali sand was almost devoid of strollers, beach-goers and swimmers. Having visited West Maui post-pandemic and about eight months before the fires, and busy Wailea in South Maui in February, this emptiness was indeed a strange sight: Ka’anapali beaches and pathways are almost always busy with walkers and runners enjoying morning wellness rituals and fresh air. But not today and, most likely, not in the near future, as the impact of the devastating fires that destroyed much of the nearby town of Lahaina last summer continues to affect the West Maui region and the island as a whole.

The fires dealt a serious blow to Maui’s economy and thousands of Lahaina locals lost their homes, businesses and jobs. Almost 100 residents lost their lives. “When is right time to visit Maui again? What is the best way to help?” Hawaii travelers asked themselves as tourism slowed to a crawl.

In March, the go-ahead signal came from Hawaii’s state and Maui’s county governments, and from the islanders too. Spread the word, they said: “Makaukau Maui” or “Maui is ready” in the Hawaiian language. And while the physical, economic and emotional recovery of Lahaina and its community will take many years, perhaps decades, there really couldn’t be a better time to visit West Maui, where most resorts and hotels are open again and welcoming visitors with the aloha spirit. Better yet: most Ka’anapali resorts are offering discount pricing and enticing packages — a rarity in the Islands, especially on Maui.

Where to stay

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa Ka’anapali

My deluxe digs at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa Ka’anapali were high up in the fabulous 217-room Hokupa’a tower. The recently remodeled Hokupa’a rooms provide wide ocean views and exclusive access to a club level called “The Lanai,” a great place to enjoy a drink and included breakfast and dinner pupus. The club’s shallow pool with in-water chaise lounges is dreamy place to enjoy a sunset and drinks crafted by their expert mixologists. Complimentary breakfast and dinner pupus, and all-day snack and non-alcoholic drinks are also provided.

The Westin Maui is putting the finishing touches on a property-wide, multi-million-dollar transformation, which also includes the redesigned Kukahi Tower and the debut of the Westin Maui social center — a 10,000-square-foot facility with a state-of-the-art arcade games, two Topgolf swing suites, and a bar and lounge. It’s the first amenity of its kind at a Hawaii resort and is slated to open to the public at the end of May. The Westin Maui also recently launched Ulu Kitchen — the resort’s signature breakfast, lunch and dinner experience in partnership with acclaimed Hawaii chef Peter Merriman (be sure to check out the Monkeypod mai tai flapjacks with Kula rum butter syrup, honey lilikoi foam and the saimin-style “Cure” for breakfast, the ahi poke bowl for lunch and the delicious grilled macadamia nut mahi mahi for dinner.)

The Westin also boasts one the best oceanfront pool complexes in Ka’anapali, with a large kids pool with two open-air slides, and several quieter pools, one with a waterfall and two others for adults only. A small infinity pool has a sandy bottom to wiggle your toes while soaking in the view. Numerous poolside cabanas offer waterside privacy for an extra charge. The resort offers a unique RunWestin program for runners as well as a daily yoga sessions for those who love to stretch and pose. The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa

In a spectacular location at the far northern end of Ka’anapali Beach, the Sheraton is committed to supporting its associates and neighbors who are still healing and providing travelers a myriad of ways to support the Maui economy by buying local, participating in volunteer experiences, and donating to those affected. In pursuit of these goals, Sheraton Maui Resort launched three new offerings, including a Return to Maui package with a donation earmarked for each stay, a “Malama at Your LEI-sure” fundraising initiative in collaboration with a local artist, and a Discover More of Maui with enhanced programming to discover local artisans and island destinations. Stroll the Ka’anapali path to the Sheraton around sunset to enjoy the hotels’ Hawaiian music and hula shows and the traditional Lele Kawa cliff-diving ceremony at Pu’u Keka’a every evening. Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort

With a recently remodeled wing of premium rooms and newly acquired by Outrigger Resorts & Hotels, the property (formerly known as the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel) offers one of the best values in the Ka’anapali resort.

Hotel guests can enjoy complimentary Hawaiian cultural experiences from a team of cultural practitioners, including kukui nut lei-making, hula, and bamboo stamp making workshops, and classes in Olelo, the native Hawaiian language. Class sizes are limited and are held at the Kawenaokeao Cultural Center in the lobby.

Facing the beach and ocean, the breezy space that once housed the resort’s Hui Hui restaurant is now an outlet of the family-friendly Maui Brewing Company, a great place to enjoy a few cold, locally made brews, pub fare like fish tacos and seared ahi tuna salad, and, of course, take in the unforgettable West Maui sunsets. Details: outrigger.com/hawaii/maui/kaanapali-beach-resort-hotel

A huge resort with 779 rooms and 31 suites at the far south end of the Ka’anapali Beach path. The resort’s six pool areas have all reopened, though the swim-up grotto bar is currently closed for renovations. The resort has launched Nashville Nights, a songwriters series featuring a stellar lineup of talented artists from the Music City, is being held once a month for the next five months. The inaugural show took place on April 27, with performances by renowned artists Gracee Shriver and Noel Bisesti.

A Tour of the Stars experience for Hyatt guests is led by Astronomy Director, Eddie Mahoney and allows guests to experience Maui’s clear skies with a night of stargazing and a rooftop astronomy program. Programming is offered every night of the week at 8, 9 and 10 p.m. Astrophotography workshops are available by request. Details: hyatt.com/hyatt-regency/en-US/oggrm-hyatt-regency-maui-resort-and-spa
