Itinerary of seine river cruise from paris to normandy.

luxury river cruise normandy

There’s a huge choice when it comes to cruising the Seine, with many trips beginning in Paris , where you’ll see all the major sights – including the Eiffel Tower , the Louvre Museum, the Champs Élysées , the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and the Arc de Triomphe . It’s a great way to get a taste of this most romantic of capital cities.

Leaving the scenic delights of Paris behind, you’ll soon find that Normandy is just as charming. Stopping at Vernon, you’re just a stone’s throw from the beautiful house and gardens of Claude Monet at Giverny. Back in Vernon, meanwhile, you’ll discover an endearing town lined with half-timbered houses medieval streets and a lovely 12th century gothic church.

Les Andelys

Set in simply idyllic countryside on a chalk cliff-lined bend of the Seine, Les Andelys also boasts a couple of historical gems – the ruins of Château Gaillard , a medieval military masterpiece built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196; and the Notre Dame Collegiate Church, dating back to the 13th century.

No visit to Normandy would be complete without a stop in one of the most historic sites in France, Rouen . Crammed with stunning Gothic architecture, including the splendid cathedral, you can also visit the main market place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. It’s an ancient city with a turbulent past, but it also has a great deal of art and culture to discover. From Caudebec-en-Caux, down river from Rouen, there are tours to the Normandy landing beaches as well as to the 7th century Jumièges Abbey, a ruined monastery that is one of the oldest in the world.

Arriving in the impossibly pretty coastal town of Honfleur , you’ll immediately see why it provided much of the inspiration for Monet’s paintings and is celebrated as Eric Satie ‘s birthplace. Tall, colourful houses line the harbour, while narrow streets wind their way through the ancient town. Honfleur is also a great base for day trips along the Normandy coast, including the glamorous seaside resort of Deauville and the stunning cliffs of Étretat.

Cruising the Seine has something for everyone, from superb culture and shopping, to natural beauty, history and world class food and drink.

How much does it cost to take a Seine River cruise in France?

Prices for river cruises can vary widely because they are based on a variety of things: the time of year, the qualities of the ship itself, the suite type that you choose and on which deck level, and whether alcoholic drinks and excursions are included.

The top luxury 7 day cruises can be had for around 9,000 GBP per person, including a choice of immersive excursions each day, whereas the less luxurious ships offer suites from around 1,500 GBP per person with extras for drinks and excursions and so on. It’s important to get in touch with our partners in the UK and the US to discover the differences between each cruise line, and which accommodations will suit you best. And there are always great bargains for early booking and last-minute cruises.

Where do Seine River cruises leave from?

Most river ships moor up at one of the two major ports on the left bank (the southern bank) with departures from Quai de Grenelle or Quai André Citroën. However, depending on the cruise and package purchased, Charles de Gaulle airport could be your pick-up point or even, in some cases in the UK, from your home!

Where does the Seine River cruise start and end?

The size of the ship determines its precise destination when leaving from Paris. Although all river cruise ships head for Honfleur, some river cruise ships are too large to enter the harbour there and must dock on the Seine itself, opposite the port of Le Havre. Honfleur is a beautifully picturesque town, its harbour surrounded by the tall, multi-coloured dwellings of centuries past, and it’s the starting point for visits to the poignant war-time beaches of Normandy.

Your Parisian rhapsody... flows through the heart of the city of l'amour, meanders through painted landscapes and flowers with romance in seaside villages and exquisite gardens along the Seine...

Impressions of France... rendered on canvas within famed art or quickly captured by street artists in Montmartre, gilded into a golden palace at Versailles, indulged during a château dinner, distilled into apple brandy and cider, carved into a clifftop castle, and floating in a Water Garden... linger long after you return home. Follow the Seine to coastal Normandy on a 10-day journey that's sure to impress. Discover the art of Paris for two nights before a 7-night cruise to Rouen, Honfleur and Giverny, immortalized by Impressionist artists. Visit D-Day beaches, sample Calvados where it is made, dine at a private château and more before returning to Paris via riverboat.

Paris to Normandy – The River Seine

Tauck exclusive – early-opening at monet's giverny, discovering monet on an early-opening visit to his home and gardens in giverny.

Impressionist master Claude Monet arranged the compositions of his garden landscapes often by rearranging his garden. It was, after all, his outdoor studio. And since it's carefully maintained to look like it did during the painter's lifetime, you can sense what it was like to be present at the moment when life became art. Observe his water lilies in a book or a print – or even better, on canvas at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris – then experience them firsthand, where art becomes life, at his restored home and gardens in Giverny... where you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive early-opening visit to this remarkable place before the normal daily crowds appear.

A private evening at Château du Taillis

Enjoying the pleasures of normandy with a private evening at château du taillis.

Prepare to be pampered during an evening of finery and fun at a grand 16th-century Renaissance château set on a park-like estate in the Normandy countryside not far from the Seine. Built in 1530 atop the foundation of a fortified 13th-century castle, the Château du Taillis boasts a 300-year medley of architectural styles that reflect the tastes and times of its owners. Today, you'll own the night at the château as you are feted at a private reception and dinner inside its opulent ballroom, music playing.

This was my first international trip and Paris was at the top of my "bucket list." Tauck provided the absolute trip of a lifetime with more than outstanding service!

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into France. You do not need a visa for the short duration of this journey.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a French consulate or embassy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact a French embassy or consulate to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

The riverboat has four decks: Emerald, Ruby, Diamond and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Dining room, which includes stops at the Lounge and the Ruby Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

On the Emerald deck, you will find a Fitness & Massage Center on board. The Fitness Center is complimentary and includes a limited variety of fitness equipment such as treadmills, stationary cycling machines and free weights. Massages are available for a fee in a private room off of the Fitness center. The water on board the ship is potable and complimentary bottled water is placed in your cabin each day. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel and on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available on the riverboat by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards. For other cabins, they are available by request from Reception.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Swimwear for the whirlpools on the riverboat; the riverboat does not have a swimming pool
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents to be secured in the safe in your hotel room or cabin

We finish with a visit to the Legion of Honor Museum.

October 29, 2017 - Day 1

Upon arrival at Charles de Gaulle Airport, guests are warmly welcomed and transferred to the  Joie de Vivre . October 30, 2017 - Day 2

La roche-guyon.

We’ll enjoy lunch then a visit to the famous 12th century château on the Seine where Field Marshal Erwin Rommel had his headquarters. It was at La Roche-Guyon that the “Desert Fox” planned and prepared the tough defenses that the Allies would encounter on D-Day, and it was here he planned German moves in the Normandy campaign. Cap the day off at the festive Captain’s Welcome Reception and Gala dinner.

October 31, 2017 - Day 3

Giverny—monet’s home & gardens / les andelys.

Impressionist painter Claude Monet often painted the little riverside town of Vernon, your port of call, so you are likely to recognize scenes the master rendered in oils on your way to his home in Giverny. You have a choice as to how you wish to journey to the home where he lived and worked for more than 40 years—via a short bus ride or by bike. Once there, you’ll discover how Monet immortalized his home and gardens in his paintings. Later, cruise along the peaceful Seine to Les Andelys, where you may wish to hike up to Château Gaillard, Richard the Lionheart’s 12th-century stronghold, offering inspiring views of the Seine.

November 1, 2017 - Day 4

Journey to rouen & dieppe.

Victor Hugo called Rouen “the city with a hundred bell towers.” In August 1942 it was the scene of the Eighth Air Force’s first bombing mission over Europe. Today, we will see the city’s Renaissance clock tower and the bronze cross that marks the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. We’ll also enjoy stops to sample some delicacies of Normandy, including Calvados and Camembert. Alternatively, you may choose to golf at Rouen’s Mont-Saint-Aignan, just minutes from the city. This 18-hole course offers both seasoned players and beginners the chance to play in a beautiful setting surrounded by woods. Following lunch, we will visit the coastal city of Dieppe. The landing by Canadian forces at Dieppe in August 1942 was the dry run for Operation Overlord, and pointed out disastrous problems in Allied planning and operations. Lessons learned were crucial to the success of the D-Day landing. This evening we arrive at Château de Sully and enjoy a sumptuous dinner of regional specialties.

November 2, 2017 - Day 5

British & canadian beaches / arromanches / longues-sur-mer.

The day’s tour of Normandy begins where British airborne troops fired the first shots of the invasion at the crucial Pegasus Bridge. Landing their wooden gliders just yards from the bridge, the men of the British 6th Airborne Division surprised the defenders and scored the day’s first victory. The tour then follows the coastal road past Sword, Juno, and Gold Beaches before arriving in Arromanches, known for the remains of an artificial harbor constructed by the Allies, the famous “Mulberry.” Next is a trip to Longues-sur-Mer, the only German battery in Normandy with the original guns still in place.

November 3, 2017 - Day 6

Bernaville / sainte-mère-église / utah beach.

This morning starts with an exclusive visit to Château de Bernaville, which served as the headquarters of German General Wilhelm Falley. In the early morning hours of June 6, US paratroopers ambushed and killed General Falley, making him the first German general killed in the Normandy campaign, seriously disrupting the German defenses at a critical moment in the Allied landing. We will visit the town of Sainte-Mère-Église, where paratroopers landed during the predawn hours of D-Day. Dropping into the town square already set on fire, the men of the 82nd Airborne Division fought tenaciously against the German defenders for control of this vital crossroads. Here we will visit the recently expanded Musée Airborne and the church made famous in the film  The Longest Day . After lunch on your own in the heart of Sainte-Mère-Église, we begin our exploration of Utah Beach, with its broad vistas and four causeway exits through the flooded fields. After walking in the footsteps of General Theodore Roosevelt Jr., visit the Utah Beach Museum which features a restored B-26 Marauder and detailed re-creations of the German beach defenses. The day finishes with a stop at Brécourt Manor, widely known as the scene of Dick Winter’s D-Day assault in the miniseries  Band of Brothers .

November 4, 2017 - Day 7

Omaha beach & normandy american cemetery.

The morning tour begins at Pointe-du-Hoc where the 2nd Ranger Battalion landed at the base of a 100-foot cliff and had to scale the vertical face in order to attack this heavily fortified German position. The next stop is Omaha Beach, “Bloody Omaha,” where the US Army overcame great odds to etch a heroic chapter in its history. Visits to the coastal towns St. Laurent-sur-Mer and Vierville-sur-Mer provide a close-up view of the intricate German defense system on Omaha and give a sense of the overwhelming odds American soldiers faced on June 6, 1944. The day’s touring ends with a visit to the Normandy American Cemetery to pay respects to the 9,387 Americans buried in the ground they helped liberate.

November 4, 2017 - Day 8

Having learned about the region’s 20th-century history, the group will spend the last day in Normandy going back 1,000 years to learn about William the Conqueror and his invasion across the English Channel by visiting the medieval city of Bayeux. With its cathedral—built on the site of Roman ruins and a key site in the story of the Norman Invasion of 1066—towering over the city, Bayeux is a quaint setting with streets lined with shops and parks that are great for strolling. Guests will view the historic Bayeux Tapestry, over 200 feet long, which tells the story of the Battle of Hastings and is well preserved and displayed in its entirety at a nearby Museum. Following independent lunch and time at leisure, the group will then journey back to Paris for our overnight at the Sheraton Hotel Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Scenic’s ‘Normandy & Gems of the Seine’ Luxury River Cruise Itinerary

As you read in our previous article about Scenic Cruises, we recently returned from a luxurious 11-day, all-inclusive river cruise in France. While I shared all the glamorous details of the Scenic Gem ship, their epic ‘ Normandy & Gems of the Seine’ itinerary is filled with fabulous destinations that are worth individually highlighting below. From medieval cities to stunning chateaus, Scenic perfectly crafts a route filled with a variety of cultural activities that any traveler can enjoy.

Les Andelys: A Picturesque Riverside Town

luxury river cruise normandy

Our river cruise with Scenic began in Paris, and after a lovely welcome dinner, we set sail to Les Andelys, a delightful riverside town nestled in the scenic Normandy region. The town’s charm lies in its well-preserved medieval architecture and the imposing Château Gaillard, a historic fortress built by Richard the Lionheart. A visit to this stunning castle offers panoramic views of the Seine Valley that are nothing short of breathtaking. In Les Andelys, I enjoyed a guided walking tour of the historic center, while my husband chose a cycling excursion with e-bikes. As I said before, Scenic offers many excursion options for those with varying interests – there were exactly 27 to pick from throughout our 11 days!

Rouen: A City Steeped in History

As we continued our voyage along the Seine, we arrived in Rouen, a city with a rich historical and cultural heritage. This is also the capital city of the Normandy region so I was grateful to spend a couple days here as there was so much to explore. Known as the “City of a Hundred Spires,” Rouen boasts an impressive collection of Gothic architecture, including the magnificent Rouen Cathedral, made famous by Claude Monet’s iconic series of paintings. The charming old town, with its timber-framed houses and cobbled streets, invites you to wander through history, including the Gros-Horloge (an astronomical clock from the 1300s). Speaking of history, we loved dining at the 14th century La Couronne – the oldest inn in France! This really helped put into perspective just how historic Rouen is.

Don’t forget to visit the Place du Vieux-Marché, where Joan of Arc was martyred in 1431. Along with this beautiful square in her memory, there is also a memorial cross and modern church dedicated to the patron saint. Although the church was built in the 1970s, the impressive stained glass inside dates back to the 1500s.

Honfleur: An Artist’s Paradise

luxury river cruise normandy

Next on our itinerary was Honfleur, a picturesque coastal town that has long been a muse for artists and writers. With its quaint harbor, colorful buildings, and charming streets, Honfleur feels like a living postcard. Honfleur is a small port, and with the Scenic Gem being the perfect size, built specifically for the Seine River, we were the only river cruise able to stop here. I enjoyed independently strolling along the Vieux Bassin, the town’s famous old harbor, and discovering all the art galleries and boutiques that line its waterfront. The town’s unique light has inspired countless artists, including Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet. It is so easy to immerse yourself in the artistic ambiance of Honfleur, and I truly loved that, although small, we were able to stop here on our journey up the Seine.

Caudebec-en-Caux: Gateway to Normandy’s Treasures

luxury river cruise normandy

Our cruise continued on to Caudebec-en-Caux, a charming town that serves as the gateway to the treasures of Normandy. Here, you have the option to embark on excursions to explore the historic D-Day landing beaches, where significant events of World War II unfolded. Alternatively, you can delve into the captivating culture of Normandy by visiting the beautifully preserved village of Villequier or sampling the region’s renowned Calvados apple brandy. Caudebec-en-Caux offers a choice between history and heritage, allowing you to tailor your experience to your interests.

luxury river cruise normandy

We chose to learn about the U.S. contribution to the battle in June 1944, and started our visit at the Utah Beach & Landing Memorial Museum. We then continued onto the Normandy American Cemetery which sits on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel. This World War II cemetery in Normandy contains the graves of nearly 9,400 soldiers, and about 1,600 names on the Walls of the Missing, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings. Although it was a very rainy day, we still learned so much and were happy to pay our respects to the fallen soldiers.

Vernon: A Garden of Inspiration & Private Concert

luxury river cruise normandy

Our journey took another artistic turn as we arrived in Vernon, where we had the opportunity to visit the legendary home of Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Giverny is a place of inspiration, with its world-famous water lily garden and the enchanting Japanese bridge that featured prominently in Monet’s masterpieces. I enjoyed strolling through the meticulously landscaped gardens, as well as stepping inside Monet’s charming pink house to see where he lived and worked here for over 40 years. It’s a truly immersive journey into the world of one of France’s greatest artists, and a highlight for anyone visiting the Seine Valley.

luxury river cruise normandy

In the evening, Scenic arranged an exclusive reception and private concert at a beautiful French castle! The 18th century Château de La Roche-Guyon welcomed us with delicious wine and classical live music from talented musicians. Hearing such beautiful music in a grand and historic setting like La Roche-Guyon was definitely a special experience for us. Scenic really knows how to create memorable experiences for their guests.

Chantilly Castle: A Grand Finale Outside of Paris

luxury river cruise normandy

Our final stop on this unforgettable cruise was where we began our journey – in the City of Lights! I loved ending in Paris, and having more time to explore the city, but equally enjoyed taking advantage of Scenic excursions outside the city too. On our last full day, we chose to visit the magnificent Château de Chantilly, a masterpiece of French Renaissance architecture. Nestled in the heart of a vast forest, this fairy-tale castle is surrounded by lush gardens and a shimmering reflection pond. With an expert guide, we explored the opulent interiors of the castle, as well as the Conde Museum, which houses an exceptional collection of paintings, including works by Raphael and Botticelli. There’s been a chateau on this estate since the 14th century, however, the original mansion was sadly destroyed during the French Revolution. The chateau you see today was rebuilt in 1875!

luxury river cruise normandy

Outside, the stunning gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, the famed landscaper behind the gardens at Versailles, offer a serene setting for a leisurely stroll. The grounds are vast, and a few options include taking in the beauty of the Grand Canal, visit the charming Hameau de la Reine (the Queen’s Hamlet), or simply relaxing amidst the picturesque landscapes. Chantilly Castle is truly an ideal day trip outside of Paris, especially if you’ve already explored Versailles. This is much more intimate and, of course, less crowded.

luxury river cruise normandy

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply seeking a serene escape, Scenic’s Normandy & Gems of the Seine’ river cruise promises an unforgettable voyage through the heart of one of Europe’s most enchanting regions. Prepare to be well taken care of by Scenic and truly captivated by the timeless allure of France!

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

luxury river cruise normandy

Regarded as the most romantic city in the world, Paris is definitely a wonderful place for couples to visit. It is also full of famous landmarks and museums, however, so even if you are going with some friends or on your own, you won't find it hard to fill your days.Paris was founded over 2000 years ago when Gauls of the Parisii tribe set down there between 250 and 200 BC, making the French capital more than 2000 years old. They settled on an island in the River Seine that today is known as Ile de la Cité. It is from here that the city centre developed. Lutetia (Lutece), as Paris was known in ancient times, was conquered by Julius Caesar in 52 BC making it a Roman centre in the Middle Ages. It wasn’t until Hugh Capet, the Count of Paris, was crowned King of France that the city’s position as France’s capital became established. Under the leadership of Etienne Marcel between 1355-1358 , Paris finally declared themselves an independent commune. Then again in 1528 Paris was named the capital of the French monarchy under Francais I. It was he who reconstructed the fortress of the Louvre and also decided to build a city hall in Paris, as it was the capital. With a city steeped in so much history, it isn’t surprising that there is so much to see and do in this city. Paris’, and arguably France’s , best known landmark towers over the city, while the Champs Elysées is one of Europe’s most impressive boulevards. Above all Paris will never get rid of the stereotype that is the city of lovers. Indeed, many happy couples get engaged on the Eiffel Tower, and hundreds of others are joined at the hip for their weekends away, but it doesn’t take anything away from the time the budget traveler can have over the space of a few days in the French capital.

Vernon/France

luxury river cruise normandy

Vernon is a very ancient town attested by prehistorical, Celtic, Gallo-Roman and Merovingian remains. It became like Gisors an important military town after the foundation of the Duchy of Normandy. Richard de Reviers, Captain of Vernon, took part in the battle of Hastings in 1066 and settled down in England. Vernon played a political and military part during the long rivalry between the Capetians and Plantagenets. It was attached to the French kingdom by Philippe Auguste in 1196, even before the rest of Normandy (1204). Philippe Auguste had the castle of Vernon built, the Keep and a tower still remain. Saint-Louis often came to Vernon where he used to meet his friend Eudes Rigaud, archbishop of Rouen. He founded the Hotel-Dieu (the present Saint-Louis Hospital) and endowed it richly, as precious charters testify. In the 18th century, Vernon, like Gisors, les Andelys, Lyons-la-Forêt was transfered by Louis XV to the Count of Belle-Isle in exchange for the island of Belle-Isle-en-Mer. After his death, his properties passed back to the crown, then they were granted to the Duke of Bourbon-Penthièvre, grandson of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, and grand-father of Louis-Philippe. Vernon keeps the memory of the heroic battles fought in 1870 by the mobile troops of Ardeche. The town was partially destroyed in 1940 but it rose from its ruins. It is presently the second town in the departement.

Rouen is a must for anyone who loves the arts, fine foods and long strolls through cobblestone streets. From the most classical to the most innovative, the city offers a wide array of cultural activities. Rouen's museums, theatres, art galleries and other attractions are amongst the richest and most dynamic in France outside of Paris. Its richly endowed museums include the Musee des Beaux-Arts (or Fine Arts Museum), where visitors can appreciate one of the finest art collections in France, with world-class masterpieces by Velasquez, Gericault, Monet and others. The Theatre of the Arts/Normandy Opera House presents a vast programme of lyrical music, as well as other forms from classical to rock and roll. Each year, more than 400 concerts are music to the ears in Rouen. Cultural activities and other festivities make their way onto the streets of Rouen during a number of popular events attended by thousands and even hundreds of thousands of people. Theatre, painting, dance, music, cinema and architecture: the muses still grace the birthplace of Corneille and Flaubert.

Caudebec-en-Caux

luxury river cruise normandy

CAUX, a town of France, in the department of Seine-Inferieure. It is situated on the right bank of the Seine, the tidal wave of which (mascaret) can be well seen at this point. The chief interest of the town lies in its church, a building of the 15th and the early 16th centuries. Round its top run balustrades formed of Gothic letters, which read as part of the Magnificent. Its west portal, the decoration of the spire of the tower. The town also possesses’ several old houses. Its industries include tanning and leather currymg, and there fs trade in grain. The port has a small trade in coal, live-stock and farm produce.
