Where best to go for a solo vacation than in Jamaica? Some of the best resorts for couples in Jamaica are hands down some of the best for singles. Many of the all-inclusive adult only resorts have features for both singles and couples, therefore the mentioning of a resort in this post doesn’t mean that they are exclusive to single people and solo travelers. Whether you are single or traveling with a partner, you should be able to enjoy most hotels and resorts in Jamaica, unless there are specific policies stating exclusivity. However, we are just giving you reasons as to how you can benefit from staying at these resorts as a solo traveler. Now that this is out of the way, let’s get to the list of the 10 best resorts in Jamaica for single and solo travelers.

Hedonism II is at the top of our list and is the best choice for clothing optional in the Caribbean. If you’re into the kinky stuff and you just want to get away without the worries that may come with being in a relationship, you can go in groups with your single friends, or you can go solo, especially if you’re a woman. At Hedonism II, you can shed your inhibitions and engage in sexy fun, with people you will meet there, who you may never see again, who have the same goal as you.

2. Sandals South Coast

Who said you cannot enjoy what was originally made for couples as a single person? However, Hilton Rose Hall is one of our top picks because it is the perfect getaway with it’s many amenities, including it’s spa and private beach that you can just relax at and enjoy the sensation of a good stress relieving massage and the view of the Caribbean Sea.

Some of it’s other features include a water park, a golf course and tours and excursions to nearby attractions. Reviews on Tripadvisor.com by solo travelers regard it as being safe, even for females. You also get the opportunity to meet people on the excursions.

4. Half Moon Resort

Half Moon Resort is an affordable 5-star resort. It gives you a homely feel, which is one of it’s most comforting characteristics to attract solo travelers. The space outside around the room allows for privacy, as it would be at your own home. Thus, instead of staying home, take a trip to Jamaica and relax at Half Moon Resort in one of the villas. There are other activities that you’d love such as biking, golf and equestrian(horse) activities. Iberostar is one of the most recent resorts the Resort Caribbean team has visited. These are three different resorts under the same umbrella, on the same property. The beauty about Iberostar is that you can select the one that is most convenient for you, based on the facilities, your taste and the nature of your trip. If you’re a single, you can enjoy the Caribbean vibes and meet new people during your stay, or while on the excursions, which is a characteristic of these resorts. Hotel Riu Montego Bay is an adult only all-inclusive resort where you can have fun and unleash your inner child. It’s notorious Splash Water World with various water slides is all you need to be indulged. However, if you want more, you can always have more as there are a number of entertainment options, such as RIU’s nightly party themes and an assortment of international drinks from top brands and cuisine.

It may not be as high ranking on Tripadvisor as Sandals, because it is not an adult-only resort, but we also have to factor in those who may not necessarily want to watch adults make out all day, but would rather feel more comfortable in a family-friendly space. It is not one noted for attracting crowds, so if it’s peace you desire, then you will get just that.

A Solo Traveler’s Guide to Jamaica

Let’s clear the air by saying I’m not much of a solo traveler. I usually travel with family, my partner or a small group of friends for safety and convenience, even if you won’t see photos of them on my blog or social media for privacy. This causes people to falsely assume I travel alone, so I often get DMs on Instagram from would-be and experienced travelers who express awe at my “solo travel” or from people looking for tips on how to do it. While it may not be my usual modus operandi, I have done solo trips and am aware of how to accomplish them safely. Read on for my solo traveler’s guide to Jamaica for every kind of traveler.

Benefits of Solo Travel

Have you ever wanted to go somewhere but ended up not going because you didn’t have anyone to accompany you? After high school and college, your friends may move all across the country and have different work schedules and family obligations which make them less accessible. Your friends or even your partner may have different interests and aren’t as keen on visiting the places that you want to go. Or, they may be interested in going but don’t have the funds to go gallivanting for the weekend. That’s where travelling solo comes in. If they aren’t available to go out when you can, go alone!

Travelling solo boosts your confidence, self-sufficiency and will allow you to experience and appreciate a place more than you would’ve done with the distraction of company. You’ll also travel more and experience more out of life than you would if you just sit around moping and waiting for someone to go out with. This is advice I myself am guilty of not always taking.

Is Jamaica Safe for Solo Travel?

Yes, yes it is! Jamaica has a high murder rate per capita and is often touted as a dangerous place but the reality is that a lot of murder in Jamaica is targeted at individuals and families who get involved in corrupt or criminal activities. There is also the unfortunate side of things where one may be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or cases of mistaken identity, but for the most part crime doesn’t befall foreigners in Jamaica once they keep their wits about them.

• I don’t recommend solo travel at night, but if you must, make sure to attend public events and establishments, store cash in different places (e.g. bra, purse, pockets) and have a secure ride to and from.
• In the corporate area, you can save the number of taxi companies to your phone and verify that you have the right driver when he or she arrives. Text the licence plate number to a friend.
• Make sure your phone is fully charged or carry a power bank.
• Don’t wear flashy jewelry especially if you have to walk from point A to point B.
• Don’t advertise expensive possessions such as your phone, tablet or laptop while walking. Keep these possessions in your bag, and try not to answer your phone or send texts while standing at bus stops alone or walking as this distracts you from your surroundings and may attract thieves.
• Locals, this isn’t the best time to speak the Queen’s English. Chat Patois if you can! If you can’t, don’t force it though.
• Bargain prices if they sound unfair, and try to always have an idea how much something costs before you go so that you don’t get ripped off.

For foreigners, try not to look too foreign. This principle applies everywhere in the world. Looking like a foreigner screams tourist, which for countries like Jamaica which rely on tourism means that someone is looking forward to overcharge you to score some extra bucks. There’s no need to walk with your camera around your neck, and try to be discreet in taking photos. Also, that Hawaiian shirt and shorts set can be worn on the beach at your hotel– NOT in the city which will scream tourist. Try not to stick out too much although that’s easier said than done for my Caucasian readers. Jamaica is 91% black so minority groups and races may attract attention. For Black foreigners in Jamaica, the accent will give you away when you speak so try to find out what things cost before coming to avoid getting ripped off. You can always send me a DM or email about the cost of things in Jamaica, or perhaps I’ll turn that into an article too when I get the free time.

There are truly many neighbourhoods to be avoided. I’ll refrain from listing names to avoid offending anyone, but communities on the poorer end of the city often consist of shacks, zinc fences, incomplete or abandoned houses and narrow lanes. Lastly, being polite and non-judgmental goes a far way! Politely decline buying weed or tell the souvenir vendors “no thanks” if you’re not interested. Don’t be surprised if someone takes a liking to you once they pick up that you’re not from that district, parish or country. Sometimes they’re just curious; other times they have ulterior motives. Only share as much information as you’re willing to give. For women, give a fake name or quickly mention a boyfriend and make it clear that you’re not interested. This deters most harassers.

Anyway, time for my top THREE tips in sightseeing Jamaica solo:

1. Visit the Commercialized Spots

Commercialized attractions in Jamaica mean tour guides, security guards, lifeguards, proper changing rooms, restrooms and a carpark– all in exchange for an admission cost. These places will be crowded but when travelling alone, the presence of other persons is welcome and helps to keep you safe. Since you’re technically not alone at these places, you can make friends with the staff or even other patrons. For example, in 2019 I went ziplining alone at YS Falls because none of my family was up for the challenge, but I was set on going ziplining. I felt a bit lonely at first until I met another woman who was ziplining alone too and we chatted for the whole way and shared travel experiences. We didn’t even exchange names but in that moment she became my ziplining companion and made the experience more enjoyable (and less nerve-wracking) for me.

Examples of spots I’d feel safe to visit alone or have visited alone include :

• Chinese Garden at Hope Gardens
• Devon House (Tour the mansion , explore the artisan shops )
• Dunn’s River Falls
• Fort Charles
• Frenchman’s Cove
• Green Grotto Caves
• Hope Zoo + Gardens
• Konoko Falls
• Montego Bay Cultural & Civic Centre
• National Gallery of Jamaica
• Peter Tosh Museum
• Rose Hall Great House
• Trench Town Culture Yard

2. Hire A Well-Recommended Tour Guide

Just because you’re travelling alone doesn’t mean you can’t employ the services of a trusted guide. Look up the places you want to visit and find out if a reputable organization such as the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT) has tour guides and rangers who can accompany you on your trip. Another option is to follow blogs such as Adventures from Elle which often shares contact details for locals who acted as a guide on my travels, and who may be able to accompany you or suggest someone else trustworthy. There are also walking community tours such as in Treasure Beach and Trench Town in Kingston which will allow you to safely explore a corner of Jamaica as a solo traveler.

3. Splurge on Tour Trips

Lastly, as more Jamaicans express interest in exploring closer to home, there has been a surge in local travel tour companies. These companies will arrange for pickup at a central location, often in Kingston or Montego Bay, then cover transport, admission, a tour guide and even light refreshments. They are a bit pricier than going on your own, but save you the hassle of planning the trip yourself and can show you to hidden gems you would miss otherwise. Since they’re trying to fill a 15 or 30 seater bus with passengers to ensure profit, you’ll have the comfort of safety in numbers and may even be able to make friends with other solo travelers and like-minded individuals. Examples include Amanda’s 876 Adventures and Portland 876 Tours . There are also trip curators such as Best of Jamaica (BOJ) Adventure Tours Ltd. which cater for a foreign audience.

Looks like Jamaica is still pretty much the same as the rest of the area. Traveling solo seems interesting. As long as I and the traveler really remember the points you explained in this post.

Lots of warnings. I realize there are Jamaicans of Asian descent. However I suspect they are still a minority. Not matter what I wear, my presence would still mark me as a “foreigner”, which I am …as a Canadian-born.

Yes, Asians are still a minority but not an uncommon face at all. Jamaicans still refer to the Asian community collectively though as Miss or Mr. Chin, or ‘Chiney’ (Chinese) but we have a growing Burmese and South Korean community here along with the Chinese, many of whom are descendants from the indentured labourers of the 1800s.

Very interesting about the other Asians. The Chinese there would view themselves as Jamaicans, Rochelle, especially if they have been there for decades or born there. They are part of Jamaica. They are Jamaican-Chinese, just I’m Chinese-Canadian, born in CAnada. I guess what I’m trying to say is that Chinese in Canada if they vote, pay taxes and live/work for decades, they are..Chinese-Canadians and wouldn’t want any other “term” used on them. The North American derogatory is Chink / Chinamen which is offensive and racist. So I have to say those terms which sound affectionate..is like using 1 term across a whole group of people. Maybe if you lived in the U.S. or Canada for several years as a visible minority, then it will all make sense. Or maybe you have lived outside of the Carribbean.

CONGRATULATIONS on your features! That’s amazing! This post has me wanting to travel again so badly. I’ve only been to Jamaica once on a cruise stop so I didn’t get to see alot (Dunn’s Falls which was amazing) and a cave, but I can’t remember the name. I would love to go back and stay for a week to take in some of the culture.

I am not from Jamaica….I am from a smaller island but I am kind of sick of hearing negative things about Caribbean islands not being safe for solo travel. New York isn’t safe for solo travel but people still visit….By the way, I am excited to go to Iceland next month with my Jamaican friend. All the island people who travel and live in Europe always hang together. I can’t wait for your XMAS blogs they were awesome last year

Oh, that’s amazing! Iceland is on my bucket list and recently I’ve considered migrating to Europe.. I just need to figure out how to go about writing the relevant medical board exams. It’d be cool to find a group of like-minded Caribbean people who enjoy travel so I could have a companion or two.

Anyway you’re right! It annoys me too. No where is truly 100% safe, but once you apply common sense wherever you go you should be ok.

Where in Europe are you considering. Congrats on returning to school. Last year I was accepted into a Master program in Italy but I ended up not going because of COVID. I took a job instead. I looked for almost a year before I found a school that fits me only to have COVID mess it up.

Great information…I’m taking notes! I may not be a solo traveler, but it definitely will not be a group – most likely a party of two. But I’m definitely calling you before and when I get there! This information is exactly what I tell people visiting Trinidad as well – different islands but the same rules apply.

Thanks so much for sharing that! Interestingly enough when I visited Trinidad in 2019, I applied some of these tips to sightsee as well. At the time I was dating a Trini so he took me around but no way he would’ve taken me hiking. Thankfully I had a link to a Trini hiking group from a blogger friend I’ve made on here and got to visit Turure Falls with her help. 🙂 Was also great meeting her in person.

Oh most definitely you have to apply the exact principles to visiting Trinidad – blend in, act normal! Great, but I MUST soak in some of that gorgeous blue salt water…guess I’ll have to do what I do when I go to Tobago…umbrella!

I don’t know what’s with the sun over Tobago, but it seems as though the sun is closer to earth there or something, so you instantly get 4 shades toasted darker, in zero point two seconds there…lol!!!

Note to self…pack umbrella 🌂 for Montego Bay!! I get “crisp” very quickly, with blisters and peeling skin by the next day – it burns and it’s not cute either.

I’m actually the opposite of you, as I am more of a solo traveler than a group one (although in recent years I’ve been doing more trips with my dad…). Jamaica has interested me for some time, especially since following your blog; I think if I were to visit, I’d either book a group tour or need a local to take me around. Hopefully one day, I can come and explore the beauty of your home country!

A Solo Traveller's Guide to Jamaica

Jamaica rewards the traveller who ventures away from the beach resorts, the traveller who is prepared to leave the tour groups to their bus journeys and the traveller who beats their own path. Solo travellers can, with a bit of planning, have an absolutely captivating experience in Jamaica. The mountains, the rivers, the music, the culture , the history, the natural beauty of Jamaica all await the solo traveller with open arms.

Safety, transport and planning ahead.

Unfortunately, Jamaica has a bad reputation when it comes to violent crime. As with many other parts of the world, a degree of forethought and awareness is necessary. Read up, or ask people about places you intend to visit, as there are some areas it just isn’t wise to wander into. But remember, most people are friendly and there is nearly always someone on hand to help if you need it.

One of the best things about Jamaica is the relaxed approach people take to life, so embrace it. That does mean even the best laid plans will drift, so do be flexible. Try to pre-book transport through a reputable firm such as JUTA or a locally recommended driver. Route taxis and coaster buses cover most of the island and offer an affordable way of getting around.

The lighthouse keeper at Morant Point Lighthouse (Jamaica’s Eastern most tip) will allow intrepid campers to pitch their tents with an uninterrupted view of the sea and access to a deserted beach. There are no facilities, but the sunrise is unbeatable. There are also camping pitches at Holywell Country Park high in the Blue Mountains, from where a number of hiking trails start.

Mountain guesthouses

A favourite of independent travellers is Mount Edge Guest house, which is on the road leading up to Newcastle from Papine, and has unbeatable views and farm-to-table organic dining. Hikers planning to summit the Blue Mountains often stay at either Jah B’s , which is operated by local Rastas, or at Whitfield Hall , a working coffee farm owned and operated by two generations of the same family. Both places will arrange transport, cook food and provides guides if necessary.

Coastal guest houses and small hotels

Portland in the north east is Jamaica’s safest and greenest parish, and just happens to contains the best small ‘hidden’ beaches and coves on the island. Try staying at Drapers San Guest House or Goblin Hill villas. Over on the other side of the island in Negril there are many small hotels that cater for solo travellers, so try the Sunrise Club just across from the famous beach.

Explore the Mountains

It is perfectly possible to solo hike to the summit of the Blue Mountains. On a clear day, enjoy views all the way to Cuba from this UNESCO world heritage site. A locally arranged driver will take you to the start point, usually near Whitfield Hall.

Raft the Rivers

Jamaica is known for its beautiful rivers and tumbling waterfalls. One of the best ways to explore them is by bamboo raft. Try either the Rio Grande or Martha Brae rivers where local guides will do all the hard work for you.

Hang out with Ratsas

A number of Rastafarian communities have guest houses that serve as a great introduction to Rastafarianism . Try Riverside Cool Cottages in St Thomas, where Ras Solomon Jackson will prepare natural Ital food and organise local hikes and tours.

Hedonism II is definitely not for everyone and can be a bit too risqué for most. You will find numerous dining and drinking options at this adult-only resort that helps to keep the party going all day and night long from pajamas parties to ragging themed nights.

Guests can indulge their wild sides in the resort's clothing-optional and nude sections, which cater to a wide range of comfort levels. The activities offered at this resort are a little different from your normal all-inclusive, making it ideal for adventurous couples and singles looking to spice up their trip.

Forget what your friends say, what you have read, or what you have heard, pack your bags and experience Jamaica. Every since that movie (you know the one I mean), came out in the 1990’s, single female travel to Jamaica has come under scrutiny. Far from increasing and encouraging it, this movie well may discourage the shy shrinking violet of the “fairer sex”. Throw away the stigma and pack your bags for one of the most “lady-friendly” spots on our planet.

My friend, Angelia Hairston and I (Marilyn Williams), would like to introduce you to the beautiful Island of Jamaica, WI. Extensive research of the Caribbean Island finds that all roads lead back to Jamaica. Jamaica will offer you more for the money, more excitement, more geographical vistas, more wonderful people, more diverse shopping experiences, and more reasons to return.

My first trip to Jamaica was made with a rather quiet and withdrawn female traveling companion. Jamaica did not work her magic on my friend as she did on me. Two months later I was frantically trying to find someone to return with me. Having no takers, I had to go solo. This would only be the second trip I had taken alone in my life, and not to mention I was going international.

To travel to Jamaica you will need a valid passport, or an original copy of your birth certificate. If you opt for the birth certificate, and you are married or divorced (therefore your name is different than that on the birth certificate), then it is best to carry along a copy of your marriage license/divorce decree. I have never been asked for these documents personally, but another female traveler on the board mentioned a problem in this area.

My rule of thumb for finances in Jamaica is to carry $100.00 for everyday I plan to be on the island. Please don’t panic…. you will by no means spend that per day, but I like to have that cushion just in case. Traveler’s checks will work for you fine in Jamaica and are probably advisable, but I don’t like them personally. I have two friends who travel solo and they bring their ATM cards and very little cash. There are ATM machines in all of your major cities, so they go get cash in little dribbles as needed.

Most hotels and resorts in Jamaica offer in-room safes for a fee. These may give you some peace of mind, but guard your safe key carefully. A lady traveler, who attended Bashment in Negril, was robbed by a gentleman she invited to her room for the evening. I must hasten to mention that he was a fellow tourist and NOT a Jamaican.

This is probably as good a place as any for me to mention that you still must remember everything your mother taught you and apply it in Jamaica as you would at home. All cautions are still on here even though you are on “vacation.”

You will land in bustling Montego Bay and be whisked away to seven miles of perfectly beautiful beach and exciting non-stop nightlife. But Negril is not the only destination in Jamaica. The entire Island is traveler friendly; therefore it is “lady friendly.”

• All the men aren’t Romeos intent on separating you from your hard earned money. Caution errs on the side of reason when it comes to courtship on ANY vacation. Can you really find your “soul mate” in 5 days???? When leaving your hotel or resort with a friend for any reason let someone at the hotel know whom you are going out with. Try to insure that your bellman or front desk sees your “date” escort you from the property. I know you are a big girl, but you are out of your comfort zone.
• Jamaica is NOT full of crime. Very little if any crime against tourist is reported in a given year. The data probably is not nearly as bad as your hometown. Use all the cautions you use at home regarding your person/valuables. Don’t get hypnotized by the cool breeze and beautiful ocean and leave your purse, passport, or $400.00 camera lying around unattended.
• Leave your expensive jewelry at home. Why take a chance, and no one there is impressed with things like that. They will be more impressed with your smile and goodwill.
• Pack light. No sequined dresses required. Comfortable casual clothes and shoes, wraps and swimsuits, and one nice “club” outfit should get you through your Jamaican adventure.
• Make some friends, Jamaican friends, and get out and experience the country. You can get some great references from people on Jamaicans.com or from the Jamaica Visitor’s Bureau.
• Hire drivers, you don’t want to try to drive in Jamaica, especially not on your first trip.
• Check with your fellow board members for lodging and tour recommendations.
• Purchase one of the little waterproof money carriers that you can wear around our neck when swimming/diving etc. I bought mine at a dive shop and it comes in very handy for all the water situations you will find in Jamaica.
• Check with fellow board members for the name and number of good local drivers. If you use the ones lined up at the door of your hotel/resort they are likely to overcharge you as they owe a kickback to the hotel.
• Ask your fellow boardites for tips on excursions in your destination area. They can help you secure transportation and give you and idea of approximate cost. Plan as many of these before your trip as possible it will make for a more relaxing trip.
• Remember to be courteous and respectful in Jamaica. By in large, the treatment you give is the treatment you will receive.
• Tipping in Jamaica is 10-15%. Tip where deserved and follow your conscious. Unfortunately, All-inclusive resorts do not allow tipping, and if the employee is caught accepting your tip their job could be in jeopardy. Use caution.

Relax…and let Jamaica enfold you in her loving embrace and suck all of that female stress right out of your body. Nowhere else on earth can do it like Jamaica.

How I Took My Family of 3 on an Epic 3-week Vacation in Jamaica for About $4,000 — Including Flights

Here's how we did it.

The drive from Montego Bay was supposed to take four hours, but five hours in, it was clear Google Maps didn’t account for the fact that the last 12 miles was an unpaved and potholed single-lane road. 

Our rental car (a little Mazda Demio) and driver (my husband) were tasked with dodging potholes, pulling over every time a vehicle came from the other direction and letting teens zip past on their motorbikes. It was dark and our arrival window for the Airbnb was long gone. Oh, and there was a screaming baby in the back seat.

It was our first trip as a family of three. My daughter was a fresh 6 months, with a brand-new passport , and we were in Jamaica. But as you might have gathered, we weren’t headed to an all-inclusive resort in Negril or Montego Bay, like many families do.

I take great pride in my ability to get off the beaten path and save a buck, and I was determined to not let the fact that I now had a baby change that. Plus, our friend who grew up on the island promised our final destination — Boston Bay, on the far eastern side of the island — would be worth it. 

The almost six-hour journey from the Montego Bay airport to the far eastern coast of Jamaica was brutal, but Boston Bay was the paradise our friend guaranteed. Clean beaches , great surf, and quiet nights. And after a day in the water, the drive was a distant memory.

Here’s how we made this trip happen on a budget, spending a little over $4,000 for three people to spend three weeks in paradise.

We booked flights a month in advance, used miles, and didn’t have to pay for the baby.

Cost: $1,656

In our family, booking last-minute flights is the norm. That, paired with the fact that we live six hours from the nearest international airport, usually means we pay more for flights. However, for this trip, we had two major wins: I had some flight miles , which shaved off a few hundred bucks, and my daughter — who was 6 months old — flew for free on my lap.

We rented a car, which ended up being a major expense.

We booked the cheapest car on the island from a small rental company. The total for three weeks was $340 — a steal. Of course, like many things that are too good to be true, the online cost didn’t match the actual price. After admitting that, yes, we did need insurance, we forked over $750. It was an unexpected expense, but there was no way around it. We drove the car daily.

We split our time between two Airbnbs.

Cost: $1,010

We stayed in two different Airbnbs during our trip, both in the Boston Bay area. The first had a queen bed and a crib and the second had two queen beds (we utilized a pillow barrier in the latter). An Airbnb was key because we ate breakfast and dinner at home every day — another money-saving tip.

We rarely went out to eat, and when we did, it was for lunch.

Cost: Approximately $900

Our food costs were wonderfully low thanks to the fact that there aren’t many restaurants in Boston Bay and we had a little human who needed to be in bed by 7 p.m. For breakfast, we ate yogurt and tropical fruit and did lots of pasta for dinner. Lunch was typically a PB&J sandwich eaten on the beach.

That said, it was ackee season when we arrived, so we enjoyed a few nice meals at Aya Naturals and visited several of the area’s famous Jamaican jerk stands, where jerk cooking was invented.

All in all, we spent around $95 a day on food and lodging, plus flights and a rental car. The total trip cost was $4,316.

We spent a full 20 days in Jamaica, which helped offset the cost of flights and the 20-day car rental. We had such a great time, we’re planning to do it again this fall — this time with a toddler.

A few days catching up with my best friend over frothy drinks completely changed my mind about all-inclusive resorts.

I was lounging in the Jamaican sun, my face tipped to the sky in an effort to soak up every ounce of the vitamin D that my body had been deprived of all winter. Chicken tenders and nachos had just been delivered by a room service attendant who attempted to hide her smile at the scene of our poolside picnic. As if this wasn’t paradise enough, my best friend and I were bobbing around in unicorn and flamingo floats, drinks in hand, toasting to a reunion two years in the making. 

We had just arrived at Excellence Oyster Bay , an adults-only luxury resort just outside of Montego Bay, Jamaica, for the kind of trip I usually avoid: all-inclusives. Not that spending a few days on the beach gorging myself on limitless food and adult beverages sounds terrible by any means, but when I travel, my style is go-go-go. I like to pack in all the things, experience the local culture and cuisine, and venture off the beaten path, and my past few experiences at all-inclusive resorts had been anything but that — crowded and with mediocre, buffet-style food. For that reason, I’d always avoided them, until now. 

My best friend of 30 years and I had thrown around a few ideas when planning a trip to celebrate our 40th birthdays. Despite being long-distance friends for more years than we actually resided in the same city, we had remained close since meeting in 7th grade band practice. After almost two years of not seeing each other, we were ready to celebrate and relax, which meant I needed to let go of my usual travel planning mentality. As it turns out, the turquoise-laden shores of Excellence Oyster Bay was the perfect place to do just that.

I’ll be honest, the thought of spending four days solely on the resort’s property made me a little antsy. But the friendly staff and ocean view from our room kicked relaxation mode in high gear. (The welcome glass of prosecco didn’t hurt, either.) In fact, having zero plans for several uninterrupted days dedicated to catching up with my oldest friend in a low-key setting was liberating. My mind was no longer attempting to maximize every minute; instead, I was entering go-with-the-flow mode — and that called for a frozen drink with my feet in the sand.

On our first evening, we explored the resort grounds, which were big yet not so sprawling that reaching the opposite end demanded a super-long walk. We caught up over sunset; cotton-candy clouds mirrored in the calm Caribbean. With a smorgasbord of restaurants to choose from, dinnertime was our oyster. Over the course of our stay, we dabbled in Italian cuisine , got fancy at Chez Isabelle , tried local specialties like curried goat and oxtail stew at Caribbean Grove , and indulged in sommelier-picked wines on our final night at Zenith . Some of our favorites were the quick eats for lunch by the pool and beach; spicy jerk chicken at Jerk Hut and the Jamaican patties at Cielo Bar, washed down with a Red Stripe beer, of course. 

We spent mornings at the beach, which, contrary to my prior all-inclusive experiences, were quiet. Since the resort is located on its own private, gated peninsula, there wasn’t anyone trying to sell us anything. Afternoons were for pool-hopping, specifically in the floats I had ordered and painstakingly shoved into my carry-on suitcase, rendering it a lumpy piece of checked luggage (totally worth it). We became known as the "float girls" around the resort, dipping in all four of the communal pools, two of which were exclusive to Excellence Club guests. Excellence Club guests also get access to private beach areas, private check-in and checkout, and a laundry list of other perks.

A hydrotherapy treatment was included in our stay, so we ventured to the Miilé Spa one afternoon for the multistep process that had us both laughing so hard, our cheeks hurt. We bonded over the hot and cold water stations, one of which involved dumping a bucket of cold water over our heads.

There were plenty of activities , from stand-up paddleboarding to biking to yoga classes, and you can choose to do as much or little as you’d like. Surprisingly, I relished in not doing much of anything at all, except hanging out with my best friend and relaxing in the spectacular sunshine. The one thing we knew we couldn’t pass up was a nighttime excursion that had always been on my wish list: seeing bioluminescent water. The resort happens to be a short boat ride from this natural phenomenon, where we were able to swim in the water, creating a light show of electric blue all around us. 

The post-dinner scene was lively, with music and other performances every night. We danced to the Bob Marley cover band, and sometime during karaoke, I realized I was the most relaxed I’d been while traveling in a long time. The trip paid homage to the sleepovers of our teen years, when we had few worries and could always find something to laugh about in between never-ending chatter. Giving into the all-inclusive mentality gifted me permission to chill out and be fully present, and, as it turns out, I didn’t have to choose between a trip centered around cultural and culinary experiences — I could have a bit of both.

I boarded the plane with salty hair, some fresh memories with my best friend, and the small miracle of somehow fitting those pool floats back in my suitcase without breaking the zipper. I think I’ll do it again sometime.
