Intrepid Travelling Experiences, Reviews and Advice

Officially known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Laos is a landlocked country in central Southeast Asia that shares its borders with 5 other countries. For the most part Laos is a jungle covered mountainous country with the meandering Mekong leading to fertile plains. Long forgotten by the world due to its isolation after the devastating effects of war, Laos is bouncing back well with millions of intrepid travellers now venturing to experience the laid-back lifestyle, tubing in Vang Vieng , exploring the Plain of Jars , visit the numerous Buddist stupas and enjoy one of Southeast Asia’s hidden gems.

If you manage to find your way through the winding mountainous roads to Luang Prabang in the countries north, you’ll be rewarded with an intrepid experience of an untouched paradise complete with stunning colonial architecture, saffron-robed monks queuing at the break of dawn accepting alms and even elephant rides through the jungle!

Thailand Adventure West Coast (Nov - Apr)

Tour operator, intrepid travel, the intrepid travel experience.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

Best and worst of Intrepid Travel Thailand & Laos Adventure

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Those who followed this blog over the past couple weeks will know that my recent trip through northern Thailand and Laos was with a small group tour via Intrepid Travel, specifically the 13 day Thailand and Laos Adventure . Now that I’m settled back at home, I’ll leave you with a review of my experience on this organized tour.

Best cities visited

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Bangkok, Thailand

We made it to four cities/towns in Thailand: Bangkok , Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai , and Chiang Khong . Of this limited exploration in Thailand, Bangkok was my personal favourite. There’s just so much going on in this massive city, a combination of grand historic temples and modern living. We only grazed the surface of Bangkok over the three days that we were there, two days with Intrepid and one on our own, but what we did see was really cool. A highlight was being able to see and participate in the Songkran festivities!

Luang Prabang, Laos

We visited four destinations in Laos: Pakbeng , Luang Prabang , Vang Vieng , and Vientiane . Of these, I think the only place I have an interest in returning to is Luang Prabang. This small riverside city has such a relaxed atmosphere and is very clean and well maintained. We had some of our best Lao eats here too.

Worst town visited

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Vang Vieng, Laos

Mostly because it was unbearably hot and dusty while we were there, our two days in Vang Vieng were the most uncomfortable I felt through the entire trip. I’m sure there is more to the town and surrounding area that we missed out on, simply because we were feeling too crappy to get outside.

Best accommodations

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Legend Hotel, Luang Prabang

This was our highest end accommodation during the Intrepid tour, and fortunately our longest stay at 3 nights. It featured clean and cozy rooms with friendly staff. We used the laundry service here which was reasonably priced at 15,000 kip per kilogram.

Siam Champs Elyseesi Hotel, Bangkok

This was rated as a 4 star hotel but probably more in keeping with 2 to 3 stars based on European and North American standards. Nonetheless, we had a large room and the place was well maintained. My only qualm is that we did not have a proper shower so had to crouch down in the tub with the handheld showerhead, making things pretty awkward.

Family Boutique Hotel, Vientiane

It was a relief to stay here for our final night in Laos after a couple days of mediocre accommodation in Vang Vieng. Our room was tiny but this at least allowed for the air conditioning to kick in really quickly.

Phonemany Guest House, Pakbeng

We were advised by Intrepid that this would be a particularly basic accommodation, but I’m putting it on my ‘best’ list because it was considerably better than expected. No amenities like a television or mini fridge in the room, but it was quite clean, with high speed WiFi and good air conditioning, so it met my relatively low expectations. Our dinner there was also one of the better meals we had in Laos.

Sleeper train, Bangkok to Chiang Mai

This is on my ‘best’ list primarily because of the novelty of traveling on a sleeper train, my first such experience. I wouldn’t make this my top choice of accommodation, but was pleasantly surprised that the bunks were fairly comfortable and the restrooms stayed clean for most of the night.

Worst accommodations

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Kiengthong Guest House, Vang Vieng

I feel bad about saying this because the staff here were really nice, but the quality of this hotel put a further damper on our already uncomfortable experience in Vang Vieng. The room was very large so it took forever for the air conditioning to circulate, and the WiFi connection was poor. We also didn’t realize that they don’t clean the room unless you put a sign up on your door, so we had to go downstairs to pick up fresh towels and toilet paper. There’s a pool but it’s awkwardly located in front of the hotel opening into the parking lot and the water is warm, so not particularly refreshing.

People Place Hotel, Chiang Mai

There are two buildings to this hotel, but Intrepid booked us into the older one that was obviously more run down. Water pressure was weak and the heater seemed to be malfunctioning, so we had cold showers during our two days here. No safety deposit box and just overall very basic accommodation.

Baan Rim Naam Guest House, Chiang Khong

This place actually wasn’t too bad and in fact had a much better bathroom compared to the place in Chiang Mai. However, we checked into the room to find a wet shower stall and dirty bath mat which grossed me out and put me off the place for the remainder of our stay.

Best mode of transportation

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Mekong River slow boat

Our two day cruise along the Mekong River was a top highlight of the trip for me. It was a very comfortable ride on a large boat, with opportunity to admire some beautiful scenery. I also liked the traditional Lao meals served on board.

Grab rideshare

Instead of Uber, Grab is the commonly used ride share app in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. We used it a couple times with the Intrepid group and on our own. It was straightforward and allowed us to avoid dealing with the taxi and tuk tuk scams that are unfortunately quite common. You can order a regular car or an actual taxi, and pay either by credit card via the app or in cash at the end of the ride.

Transfer BKK

I just want to put in a plug for the airport transfer company we used, Transfer BKK . It was 990 baht (about $40 CAD) for an SUV with driver who picked us up directly from the airport and brought us to the hotel, much cheaper than the transfer suggested by Intrepid which would have cost more than two times as much. The owner responded to my booking request within a couple hours and was super organized.

Worst mode of transportation

intrepid travel thailand and laos

There were a couple long rides in a minivan which were a necessary part of the tour, so I can’t really fault Intrepid for this. We were also fortunate to have only four of us in the 9 seater minivan, so it could’ve been worse in terms of being cramped. I imagine conditions would be much less tolerable with even a slightly larger group, although I think the company does hire a more spacious minibus in that case.

Best guided activities

intrepid travel thailand and laos

My favourite activities overall were actually the ones we organized on our own: Elephant Nature Park and Tamarind cooking school . Out of the Intrepid guided excursions, the following were my top ranked.

Chao Phraya River cruise, Bangkok

This was our first organized activity in Thailand and a pleasant start to the trip. It was really interesting to catch a glimpse of local life and see all the traditional homes located along the khlongs. I also just really like being on boats.

Kuang Si Waterfalls, Luang Prabang

This place is even more striking in person than my photos could capture. The pools were perfect depth for swimming and the water was so refreshing. An afternoon well spent, for sure.

Worst guided activities

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai

This was mostly disappointing due to the weather. The heavy layer of smoke in the air from burning season completely obscured the view of Chiang Mai, so we didn’t get to enjoy the views that most people climb those 300+ stairs to see.

Afternoon walking tour, Vientiane

We were just way too hot on this afternoon to tolerate the walk. There also wasn’t all that much to see in this sleepy capital city of Laos.

Best things I packed

intrepid travel thailand and laos

I invested in a real camera, the Sony Cybershot HX80 , for this trip and it was a worthwhile expense. The zoom and low light capabilities were far superior to my phone camera and I think I managed to get some really nice photos off of it, such as the sunrise shot above. It’s compact so easier to carry compared to a full fledged DSLR.

Stretchy sandals

This was the longest period I’ve been subjected to extremely hot weather, so my body must have been in some kind of shock. My feet were swollen through most of the trip and my Sanuk Yoga Slings were a relief to have on. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have been able to walk!

Dry bag/sleeve

I intended to use this during my trips to the Kuang Si Waterfalls and Blue Lagoon, but it turned out to be even more handy to have around when attending the Pi Mai and Songkran festivities. It was the only way to take photos without drowning my phone.

Worst (least used) thing I packed

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Portable fan

I brought along a handheld misting fan from Amazon in the hopes that it would give me some relief from the heat, but it really didn’t help and was a hassle to carry around. What I really wanted was some kind of wearable ice suit!

img_2099

Meals were mostly not included as part of the tour, other than a few hotel breakfasts which were merely passable. The best dining experiences we had were at Gaggan in Bangkok and Tamarind in Luang Prabang, but we found both these places ourselves. Of the restaurants that our Intrepid guide brought us to, these were my favourites.

Rim Khong Restaurant, Chiang Khong

Even though I was grossed out by the hotel room in Chiang Khong, the restaurant beside it served one of my more delicious meals in Thailand. I had the tom yum kung , which is spicy sour soup with prawns. Yum.

It was here where I had my first Lao laap , a traditional dish of minced pork seasoned with fish sauce and fresh herbs, served with sticky rice. Made fresh to order, too. They also had some of the best fried spring rolls we had in Laos. Delicious.

Worst meals

intrepid travel thailand and laos

This is a bakery cafe chain with locations in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. It was one of the few places open during Pi Mai and had air conditioning, so we were taken there twice during the trip. Their bland sandwiches were our most disappointing meals through the trip, and they charged western level prices so didn’t even make up for it by being a cheap eat.

I should note that meals in Laos were generally more expensive than in Thailand, almost twice as much in most cases. An average meal in Thailand was about $3-5 USD versus $5-10 USD in Laos.

Best overall aspects

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Small group size

The maximum group size for all the Intrepid tours is 16 people. We had an especially small group with only 4 of us, which was quite ideal. We saw lots of huge coach bus tours throughout our travels, and they always looked like terrible experiences being herded around like cattle. With our tiny group, we avoided feeling too cramped in the minibus and it was much easier to corral all of us together. Luckily, our travel mates were cool and easy to get along with. We also really liked our guide, who was a guy from Chiang Mai about our age. It felt like a much more authentic experience to have a local showing us around.

Easy logistics

It was nice to be able to sit back and enjoy the experience, not worrying about transportation or accommodations, as these were all arranged by Intrepid. We ran ahead of schedule on several occasions and never felt too rushed around.

Lots of free time

This could be viewed as a negative for some people looking for more guidance given that this is supposed to be an organized tour, but I appreciated the opportunity to go off and do our own thing throughout the trip. I did do a fair amount of research on my own ahead of time, which I think made all the difference in improving my trip experience.

Worst overall aspects

intrepid travel thailand and laos

Missing the sale price

I booked the trip about 3 months in advance, and was dismayed to see the price go down by nearly $500 CAD about a month before departure. At that point it was too late to cancel and rebook for the sale price, as I would have had to forfeit my deposit. A frustrating experience, to say the least. Next time, I will probably hold off on booking the tour in order to take advantage of their last minute deals.

Quality of accommodations

Given the amount we paid, we didn’t really get good bang for our buck when it came to accommodations. Even higher end hotels in the places we visited can be found for less than $50 USD per night, so there were definitely some better options out there. However, I will acknowledge that Intrepid did advise us of this and I tempered my expectations before embarking on the trip.

Smoke everywhere!

Those traveling to this region between February and April, be forewarned about burning season. The air quality does vary from year to year, but apparently conditions were especially bad this year. As mentioned above, the haze prevented us from fully enjoying a lot of the scenery and it would be tough on anyone with respiratory issues. We did see some nice blue skies toward the end of the trip around Pi Mai and Songkran, so it seems things improve considerably toward mid to late April. Fortunately I didn’t feel physically ill at any point, but it would be nice to come back perhaps in December or January when conditions are the most pleasant.

Final thoughts

intrepid travel thailand and laos

I probably shouldn’t end this entry on a negative note, so I’ll just finish off with saying that yes, I would recommend the Intrepid Travel Thailand and Laos Adventure. It isn’t a perfect tour but it was a fantastic way for Mr. Chuckles and me to be introduced to Southeast Asia and meet some other well traveled people. Hopefully we’ll be back here in the future and we are going to consider some of Intrepid’s other tours, perhaps in Vietnam next time. Oh, the places we’ll go!

Day 1: Bangkok

Location: bangkok, accommodation: hotel.

Sa-wat dee! Welcome to Thailand. Thailand's bustling capital, Bangkok, is famous for its tuk-tuks, khlong boats and street vendors serving up delicious local food. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, if you arrive earlier, why not venture out into this enigmatic city. Bangkok has so much to offer those with time to explore, so perhaps arrive a day or so early to uncover the Chinatown area, visit the magnificent (but very crowded) Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, wander down the tourist mecca of Khao San Road, indulge in a Thai massage or see the backstreets of Bangkok by bike on an Urban Adventure. Find out more at urbanadventures.com. After the meeting tonight, gather your fellow travellers together and tuck into some into world famous street food for our first optional dinner. Optional Activities: - Bangkok - Grand Palace

Day 2: Bangkok - Overnight Train

Location: bangkok - overnight train, accommodation: overnight train, meals included: breaksfast.

Begin the day with a 1-hour river cruise down the Chao Phraya River to explore the famous ‘khlongs’ (canals). Life along these canals seems a world away from the chaotic streets of the capital. Pay a visit to Wat Pho, one of the Bangkok temples, with a 46-metre long gold-plated Buddha reclining inside. Even the feet of this statue are incredible, three metres long and intricately decorated with mother of pearl. The temple grounds are equally fascinating, filled with beautifully decorated stupas, halls, and shrines. This evening you’ll head north to Chiang Mai on an overnight train journey, accommodated in a sleeper carriage (approximately 13 hours). The carriages are air-conditioned, with bunk beds; clean sheets, blanket and pillow are provided. Your baggage travels in the carriage with you. There is a food and drink service available on board. Sometimes the air conditioning can make the carriage quite cold so you may want to bring a warm layer of clothing. Included Activities: - Bangkok - Khlong boat canal tour - Bangkok - Wat Pho Optional Activities: - Bangkok - Thai Massage - Bangkok - Jim Thompson's House

Day 3: Chiang Mai

Location: chiang mai.

The most vibrant city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai has many famous temples and an interesting old city area. Renowned for its lively cafe scene and extremely welcoming locals, this place captivates many travellers. First, embark on a scenic, winding drive up a mountain (around 45 minutes) to one of the country's most stunning temple complexes, Doi Suthep. A 300-step naga-guarded stairway leads you to the temples, and the climb is well worth the effort. The hypnotic atmosphere of chanting Buddhist monks and sweeping views of the city make this a most memorable experience. After making our way back down from the temple, check in to the hotel and plan the rest of your time here. In the evening you can choose to wander through the enormous, colourful Night Bazaar or perhaps relax at a fine restaurant along the riverfront. Make sure to sample some delicious traditional northern Thai food – the signature dish is kao soy, yellow wheat noodles in a curry broth, traditionally served with chicken or beef. Included Activities: - Chiang Mai - Doi Suthep Temple Complex (Entrance)

Day 4: Chiang Mai

Today is free for you to explore and there are plenty of optional activities available. Perhaps join a local cooking class today and discover the secrets of real Thai cuisine, you'll learn the key ingredients, how to use them, and what to use in their place if you can’t get them at home. As well as taking your own comprehensive recipe book with you after the class, you'll feast on the fruits of your labour for lunch. Get active with a bicycle tour to discover the city and surrounding countryside from a different perspective, or be spirited away on an early morning Chiang Mai tour that puts you at the epicentre of Buddhist rituals. Learn to meditate, offer alms to monks, and make an offering at a temple. Also popular is the lovely Elephant Sanctuary at Chang Chill. Optional Activities: - Chiang Mai - Thai cooking course - Chiang Mai - Bicycle tour

Day 5: Chiang Khong

Location: chiang khong, accommodation: guesthouse.

Take a journey through rural countryside to the Thai border town of Chiang Khong (approximately 5.5 hours). On the way visit privately owned Wat Rong Khun, more commonly known as the White Temple – a must visit in Chiang Rai. This contemporary temple is constantly being updated, and its strange design features references to Buddhist mythology, human sin and pop culture icons such as Michael Jackson, Harry Potter and Superman. Formerly known as 'Juon', peaceful riverside Chiang Khong remains an important market town for the surrounding hill tribes and for trade with Laos. Stretch your legs with a stroll around town, and if you find yourself with time, then Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Luang are both well worth a visit while you’re here. Tonight, why not enjoy a final Thai drink and dinner, while Laos beckons from across the mighty Mekong. Included Activities: - Chiang Rai - Wat Rong Khun (White Temple)

Day 6: Mekong River - Pak Beng

Location: mekong river - pak beng.

After crossing into Laos and for the duration of our time in the country we will be joined by additional Laos guides – a government requirement. Board a slow boat for the 2-day journey down the mighty Mekong River to Luang Prabang. The journey is relaxed, so you can experience the slow pace of village life and the breathtaking scenery along the river up close. The river boat is basic in nature, with a toilet, covered roof, and open sides to take in the fresh air. There are seats in the front of the boat and a small open area in the back where you can have a nap on the mat, play cards, read or have lunch. Dock at the small town of Pak Beng (after about 6 hours) to spend the night. Hmong and tribal Thai people are frequently seen on the main streets, where vendors sell local textiles and handicrafts. Included Activities: - Mekong River - 2 day boat trip

Day 7: Mekong River - Luang Prabang

Location: mekong river - luang prabang.

Reboard the boat and cruise to the Pak Ou Caves. An important religious site overlooking the river at the junction of the Mekong and Ou Rivers, the revered Pak Ou Caves consist of two sacred limestone caverns filled with Buddha images of all styles and sizes, brought by devoted villagers over the centuries. The lower cave, known as Tham Ting, is entered from the river by a series of steps and can easily be seen in daylight. The higher cave, Tham Phum, is deeper and requires a torch for viewing. Continue on to the former royal capital of Luang Prabang (approximately 7 hours total journey time). This atmospheric World Heritage-listed city is a favourite of many travellers. Nestled in the hills of northern Laos on the confluence of the Mekong and Khan rivers, the city is claimed to be ‘the best preserved city in South East Asia’ by UNESCO. The city and its people retain a refined, yet relaxed, air and it’s a wonderful place to wander the streets into boutiques, cafes and small shops. Stay in a hotel tonight and if you are feeling energetic, climb Mt Phousi for some sunset views – the large hill that dominates Luang Prabang's skyline, topped by a glittering golden stupa. You can climb the 328 zigzag steps up to the sacred gilded stupa and big drum of the Phu Si Temple for a panoramic view of Luang Prabang and its surrounds. Included Activities: - Luang Prabang - Pak Ou Caves Optional Activities: - Luang Prabang - Mt Phu Si

Day 8: Luang Prabang

Location: luang prabang.

Once the heart and soul of the ancient Lao Kingdom (Lan Xang) and designated a World Heritage site in 1995, Luang Prabang is endowed with a legacy of historic red-roofed temples and French-Indochinese architecture, not to mention some of the country's most refined cuisine, a multi-ethnic population and rich culture. Rise with the sun this morning and witness a traditional alms giving ceremony. View the procession of saffron-robed monks on their daily outing collecting food offered by devotees, a practice that dates back centuries. The offerings must be collected early, as the monks cannot eat anything after midday. By giving food to a monk, it is believed you ‘het bon’ (make merit) which will be carried over into the next life. Your leader will guide you through the do’s and don’ts and help you to take part in this alms giving tradition. Return back to your hotel for breakfast and a free morning. In the afternoon, head south of town and stop for a sweet (socially responsible) treat at Laos Buffalo Dairy, an enterprise that works with the surrounding villagers by renting their buffalo, in order to produce delicious products including yoghurt, cheese and ice cream. The Dairy ensures a regular income for locals while ensuring the buffalo and their calves are well looked after. Why not contribute to this local business by purchasing an ice cream! Continue on to the beautiful Kuang Si Falls, a picturesque, multi-level cascade that offers fantastically blue pools that are perfect for a mid-afternoon dip. Back in Luang Prabang this evening you’ll have free time to make further discoveries, including visiting the popular night market. Included Activities: - Luang Prabang - Kuang Si Waterfalls - Luang Prabang - Alms giving ceremony - Luang Prabang - Laos Buffalo Dairy social enterprise visit Optional Activities: - Luang Prabang - Night Market - Free

Day 9: Luang Prabang

Meals included: breaksfast, lunch.

This morning, experience a wonderful local elephant project in nearby Mandalao that will give you a new perspective and profound understanding of these magnificent beasts. Discover the mysterious beauty of the Lao jungle as you walk side by side with recently rescued elephants on stroll through their natural habitat – a perfect way for these happy creatures to enjoy their freedom after decades of hard labour in logging camps. Begin by leaving Luang Prabang for the village of Xieng Lom (approximately 30 minutes) before taking a quick boat ride across the Nam Khan River where you’ll be introduced to your new gigantic companions. Feed them some special treats (a sure way to win their friendship) followed by a gentle, therapeutic walk, that offers you the opportunity to absorb their calming energy as you wander along a small dirt path through the surrounding flora and fauna, past traditional farms and the Huay Nok stream – where you may be able to spot elephants splashing around in the water as they cool off from the hot Lao sun! As you prepare to start your walk back to Mandalao, say goodbye to your new friends. Return to Luang Prabang in the afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Included Activities: - Luang Prabang - MandaLao Elephant Conservation trek - Luang Prabang - Lunch at Manda Lao Elephant Conservation Optional Activities: - Luang Prabang - Royal Theatre - Luang Prabang - Wat Xieng Thong - Luang Prabang - National Museum

Day 10: Vang Vieng

Location: vang vieng.

Take a high-speed train today to Vang Vieng (approximately 1 hour). Situated on the Nam Song River, Vang Vieng is surrounded by towering limestone karsts and is a great place to enjoy being out in and surrounded by nature. After checking in to the hotel, use tonight to plan out your next few days with your group and leader.

Day 11: Vang Vieng

There’s plenty to do in and around Vang Vieng, known as an adventure town thanks to its unique and varied surrounding country. The area is renowned for its caves, many of which are easily accessible from the town. Perhaps the most famous is the cave of Tham Chang, a beautiful cavern fed by a natural spring making it a perfect spot for a refreshing swim. Hire bicycles to explore further afield, hike the trails to nearby lookout points, join a day trip to go kayaking on the river, or you can visit an organic mulberry farm just outside town and enjoy a meal there. Optional Activities: - Vang Vieng - Bicycle hire - Vang Vieng - Wat Si Vieng Song - Free - Vang Vieng - Kayaking - Vang Vieng - Tham Phu Kham Cave

Day 12: Vientiane

Location: vientiane.

Continue by private minibus to the country's capital, Vientiane (approximately 3.5 hours). Possibly Asia's most laidback capital, even here everything seems to be conducted at a relaxed pace. Vientiane has a wealth of cultural delights to discover on foot, or for the less energetic, by jumbo (tuk-tuk). Faded colonial mansions, tree-lined boulevards and old temples create an atmosphere of timelessness, particularly in the older part of town along the Mekong River. Pay a visit to Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane and home to almost 7000 Buddha images. Visit COPE vistors centre, an organisation dedicated to assistance those who have been injured by the multitude of unexploded ordinance across the country. This is an excellent cause and a chance to educate yourself about Laos' devastating war history as well as buy a snack or drink from their Karma Cafe. This evening, maybe join your fellow travellers for dinner tonight. Included Activities: - Vientiane - COPE visit - Vientiane - Wat Si Saket

Day 13: Vientiane

There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time. For those with more time here, there are plenty of choices, including the Pha That Luang Monument. Optional Activities: - Vientiane - Xieng Khuan (Buddha Park) tuk tuk & entrance - Vientiane - Pha That Luang Monument (incl. long skirt hire to enter) - Vientiane - Lao Textile Museum - Vientiane - Haw Pha Kaeo Museum of Religious Art

Accommodation

  • OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
  • Accommodation on this trip is on a twin basis.
  • CHECK-IN TIME
  • Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
  • PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
  • If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
  • WINDOWLESS ROOMS:
  • Some hotels in Laos have windowless rooms, or windows that don't necessarily have a view. This is often due to high population density in large cities, however local building standards also don't require rooms to have windows. We do request rooms with windows, however please be aware they aren't always available.

Included Activities

Important information.

  • 1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Day 2 (Overnight train) and Day 6 (Pak Beng) where you will be in shared accommodation and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information. Please note that some room configurations have two single beds, although a double bed will always be requested.

Mode of Transport

Check out our q&as, is this trip right for you.

You'll get to see lots of major highlights and cover plenty of distance over the course of this trip, which means some long travel days. Laos is less developed than some of its neighbours so roads can be bumpy, delays common and accommodation simpler in some locations compared to Thailand or Vietnam. Pak Beng, where we pause to break up our Mekong journey, is a remote and quiet town with little tourist infrastructure - a contrast to the traveller hubs of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. It can be surprisingly cool, especially at night from November to February. Make sure you have some warm gear packed for this period so you can be comfortable. Smoke Haze can be common for Northern Thailand into Laos between March and April due to burning off season of crops. You may wish to take a quality mask with you if you are particularly sensitive to smoke. Due to dam construction upstream, water levels on the Mekong aren't as reliable as in previous years. When the Mekong River is at its lowest from February to April, part of the journey may occasionally need to be made overland by bus instead of by boat. There is free time in a number of destinations to spend as you wish. Your leader can make suggestions, and some prior research to work out what you are most interested in will help you make the most of your time.

Reviews of this operator

Just leaving a review to....

Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍

I just completed my first...

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon!

I have just come back...

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic.

I have travelled with Intrepid...

I have travelled with Intrepid a number of times now and can't recommend them enough. The trips are always exciting, full of history and immersive in the culture and environment. The office staff are great too and always happy to help with any questions you might have. Everywhere I have gone with the company has been different but the guides and itinerary have always been excellent and full of knowledge and passion for their country. Add in the social responsibility angle the company has and it top quality ethical practice and you can't go wrong

I recently went on an...

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X

North American Adventure

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

I have just completed a...

I have just completed a 12 day food tour of Vietnam, and had an amazing time. Our tour leader was great, knowledgeable and kind, who helped throughout the trip with recommendations for places on our free days, and spas. All the food we tried was delicious. It is a very fast paced tour, and Bon tried to maximise our experiences for the best.

Cambodia Discovery

The overall experience was fantastic. V good tour leader. All places visited had something special to do or see. I would book a tour with this company again. Only one negative tour hub is not I repeat not available to contact direct by phone.

Explore Southern Africa

Best trip ever was, 2 things I didn't like the black mamba stop was wasting day and village ,so 2 night I think was just wasting, I could do 2 days in Kruger, and one more night in delta

We had a fantastic time...

We had a fantastic time on the Botswana Highlights tour recently. We chose Intrepid because it seemed to suit what we wanted - well planned itinerary, small group, comfortable without being overly luxurious (and pricey), and supportive of the local community and environment. We weren't disappointed, and as we met with other like-minded travellers then we all had a great time. We are already planning our next Intrepid tour - maybe Vietnam & Cambodia :-)

Floods and mudslides kill more than 200 in Myanmar

intrepid travel thailand and laos

The number of people in Myanmar who have died in the wake of Typhoon Yagi rose to more than 220, with nearly 80 others still missing, the military government said.

The storm swept through northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar in early September and has killed more than 500 people across the region so far, according to official figures.

It triggered severe floods and mudslides in Myanmar, leaving at least 226 dead as whole villages were wrecked.

With hundreds of thousands of acres of crops destroyed, the UN also warned that more than half a million people in the war-torn country are in urgent need of food as well as drinking water, shelter and clothes.

Getty Images Two men guide cattle through high flowing flood waters in Sin Thay village in Pyinmana, in Myanmar's Naypyidaw region, on September 13, 2024.

The UN said the storm's devastation spanned nine states and regions, including the the country's capital Naypyidaw in the interior, as well as Mandalay to the north, Magway to the west, and Bago to the south - regions that lie along the Irrawady, Myanmar's largest river.

Also hit were Shan State in the north-east and Mon, Karenni and Kayin states, which lie to its south.

A civil war has engulfed the country since early 2021, when the army sized power after ousting the democratically-elected government.

Since then thousands have been killed and millions forced from their homes as various armed resistance groups battle the ruling military junta.

In the last year or so, the army has lost control of large parts of the country, creating an unstable patchwork of governance.

That, coupled with poor communication in remote areas, has meant information about casualties has been slow to emerge.

The United Nations said the floods are among the worst in Myanmar's recent history. Its disaster response agency estimated that some 630,000 people have been affected by the flooding with blocked roads, damaged bridges and severed communication lines, all of which have severely hampered relief efforts.

Aid agencies also have little or no access to many parts of the country, including Shan State, one of the worst-hit by the flooding, which is now largely controlled by a rebel army.

A volunteer rescuer in the state's south told BBC Burmese that entire homes had been buried under mudslides.

"We have collected over 100 dead bodies so far, including children and elderly people. We're still searching for over 200 more," he added.

“This flooding is the worst I have ever seen in my life,” said a resident in the east of Shan State.

The situaiton is just as dire more than 500 miles away, in the south-east: “People are in urgent need of food," Khon Matia, a senior official in rebel-controlled Karenni State (also known as Kayah State) told BBC Burmese.

"There is no offer of international aid. People are in a more difficult position here because everything is blocked because of the floods and the war. So it is very difficult to reach us."

The ruling military junta issued a rare appeal for help at the weekend, with neighbouring India so far the only country to respond. It sent aid, including food, clothes and medicine.

Typhoon Yagi also caused 10 deaths in Thailand and one in Laos.

In Vietnam, the death toll stands at 292, with 38 missing, more than 230,000 homes damaged, 280,000 hectares of crops destroyed and major manufacturing hubs heavily damaged, according to authorities.

Best time to visit laos.

Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 30 degrees Celsius and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing to 40 degrees Celsius.

Culture and customs

The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.

Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.

Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbours, so visitors will be able to taste the flavours of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.

Things to try in Laos

This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chilli, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favourite with locals and travellers.

2. Khao Poon

This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chilli, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.

3. Fresh fruit

The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?

The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History and government

Early history.

It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.

Like its neighbouring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighbouring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.

Recent history

Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honour of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.

A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favour of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighbouring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Top 10 outdoor experiences in Laos

1. waterfall wander.

Walking around peaceful Kuang Si Falls is a must-do for anyone travelling through the Luang Prabang area. Gentle cascades of water flow into turquoise pools creating a heavenly atmosphere that draws in both tourists and locals keen on some respite from the heat.

2. Play petanque

The French game of petanque is a lot like bowls and quite popular with the people of Laos. If you’re lucky enough to come across a group of kids playing this game in the streets, try to join in – it’s fun and simple to play, and free.

3. Beautiful biking

Hiring a bike and cycling past quiet villages, small farms and rice paddies is a great way to spend an afternoon in Laos, as you can take in stunning scenery, meet locals and get fit all at once.

4. Have a kick

Get amongst the action by watching and playing a bit of Sepak Takwar with locals in the parking lots, streets and parks of Laos. This game (which could be described as a hybrid between football and volleyball) is commonly played throughout South-East Asia, and the locals of Laos are no exception.

5. Power to the paddle

Paddling a kayak down the Nam Song River is an interesting and energetic way to get active and see the sights of Vang Vieng.

6. Get back to nature in Nam Ha

Home to a wide range of rare plant and animal species, this protected area is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts, bird watchers and animal lovers. The challenging hike through forested terrain provides many rewards in the form of animal spotting and breathtaking scenic vistas.

7. Refreshing river swim

Taking a dip in one of Laos’ many rivers is the perfect way to escape the heat on a hot summer’s day.

8. Spiritual stroll

Taking a leisurely walk around Vientiane’s quirky Buddha Park (also known as Xieng Khuan) is akin to taking an active history, religion and art lesson. Full of Hindu and Buddhist sculptures that depict myths, legends and stories – the giant reclining Buddha is a highlight for most. Surrounding trees, gardens and flowers add to the serenity.

9. Cruise along an icon

Taking a riverboat journey down the Mekong is an iconic journey to savour. Sit on deck, catch the breeze and take photos of the surrounding landscapes as villages, people and mountains glide by.

10. Tough trek

Test your fitness against some of Laos’ mountains on a challenging trek. With so much mountainous terrain, there are many different options and places to hike all around Laos – bring your best hiking boots and a sense of adventure.

Apart from being a great place to pick up handmade wares, buy fresh produce and mingle with locals, the many markets of Laos are one of the most interesting places to take photos also.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Laos

1. Textiles

Laotian weavers are responsible for crafting an impressive range of top-quality fabric wonders. Silk and cotton are the most common and with everything from handmade bags, scarves, cushion covers, placemats and linen on offer, it won’t be hard to go over your luggage limit here.

2. Saa paper

Saa paper (also known as Mulberry paper) is made from the leftover bi-products of the silk industry. You’ll be able to find Saa paper notebooks and stationary, cards and even gorgeous hanging stars in some of Laos’ markets and boutiques.

3. Hmong handicrafts

The Hmong people are famous for creating colourful handicrafts, which can be found in most markets around Laos. Hand-embroidered bedspreads, vibrant clothing and cotton dolls make meaningful global gifts for friends back home.

Festivals and events

Bun pi mai (lao new year).

One day just isn’t enough for Laotians to celebrate New Year - they need a whole three days! The festive period is characterised by water fights, street parties, feasts, laughing and smiles, as the past year’s troubles are washed away to welcome a new year of luck and prosperity.

Vientiane Boat Racing Festival

Entrants from all over Laos travel to Vientiane to compete in this big boat racing festival held at the end of Buddhist Lent. Food stalls and sideshows line the streets to entertain the thousands of people who gather on the river to watch the races.

Laos travel faqs, do i need a visa to travel to laos.

You can get your visa in advance, but a visa can easily be obtained on arrival at most airports from around 35-50 USD (dependant on nationality). Please check with the consulate in your country for more details before you travel. If you are planning to get your visa at the airport we recommend bringing two passport-size photos.

Is tipping customary in Laos?

Tipping isn't mandatory or customary in Laos, but a tip of spare change or another small amount would be appreciated by restaurants, drivers and other service workers, especially if the service has been particularly good.

What is the internet access like in Laos?

Internet access is available easily in tourist areas like Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Vientiane, but is far less likely to be found in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Laos?

You'll be able to use your mobile phone in most urban areas of Laos, although rural and remote areas may not have network coverage. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your mobile carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your mobile while in Laos.

What are the toilets like in Laos?

You'll have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation whilst in Laos. The standard toilet is of the squat variety and this may take some getting used to, although western-style toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in Laos?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Laos. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Laos?

Major credit cards are generally accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in the city and tourist areas in the cities. However, they may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Laos.

ATMs can be found in the cities of Laos, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic. Smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so prepare for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Does my trip to Laos support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Laos directly support our foundation partner, MandaLao Elephant Conservation .

MandaLao Elephant Conservation

MandaLao Elephant Conservation was the first non-riding elephant sanctuary in Luang Prabang, and they actively promote ethical elephant care and create jobs in communities in Laos. Donations from our trips help them care for rescued elephants at their sanctuary (including food and veterinary costs) while providing employment opportunities within the local community.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

EMA extends Keppel’s electricity importer licence to 2026, supporting enhancement of the ASEAN Power Grid to better meet regional energy demands.

intrepid travel thailand and laos

  • In a boost to the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) to better meet Southeast Asia’s growing energy demand, the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) will be enhanced, with the capacity of electricity traded to be doubled under its next phase.
  • Phase Two of the LTMS-PIP will see electricity traded increase from up to 100 megawatts (MW) to a maximum of 200 MW. This is made possible by the introduction of multidirectional power trade under which additional supply will come from Malaysia.
  • To support this next phase of the LTMS-PIP, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) has granted an extension of Keppel’s electricity importer licence for another two years to 2026. In addition to being able to import electricity from Lao PDR, Keppel will be importing electricity from Malaysia.
  • The LTMS-PIP is crucial to supporting ongoing efforts towards advancing the APG and ASEAN Economic Community. By creating opportunities for multilateral and multidirectional electricity trading in the region, the enhanced LTMS-PIP will strengthen grid resilience and promote energy integration to meet the rising electricity demand in the region.
  • The LTMS-PIP was launched on 23 June 2022 and marked the first collaboration among four Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states on multilateral cross-border electricity trading of renewable energy.
  • Mr Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said, “We welcome the enhancements to the LTMS-PIP with the doubling in electricity trading capacity and the additional electricity supply from Malaysia. The LTMS-PIP will be more dynamic with multilateral and multidirectional power trading. This brings us closer to achieving the vision of the ASEAN Power Grid."
  • Ms Cindy Lim, Chief Executive Officer of Keppel’s Infrastructure Division said, “Building on the success of the initial two-year hydropower import from Lao PDR through the LTMS-PIP initiative, Keppel is delighted to have been granted another two-year electricity importer licence from the Energy Market Authority for the Phase Two of LTMS-PIP, with an increased import capacity of up to 200 MW from Lao PDR and Malaysia. This expansion underscores the scalability of multilateral electricity trading initiatives. We extend our sincere appreciation to the esteemed LTMS-PIP partners for their steadfast support and collaboration. As Singapore's first cross-border electricity importer, Keppel is honoured to play a key role in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, enhancing energy infrastructure connectivity, and strengthening regional grid resilience.”
