Aeromoov Instant Travel Cot first look

Billed as "the fastest travel cot in the world", we put it through our safety tests..

aeromoov_portable_instant_travel_cot_first_look

CHOICE verdict

The Aeromoov Instant Travel Cot is a lightweight portable cot that's very easy to fold and unfold. But it's let down by its flimsy build and insufficiently firm mattress which is fiddly to install. We've recommended other travel cots that may be bulkier, but pass all our safety tests. They also cost a fraction of the price.

Price: $399 Contact: aeromoov.com

Portable cots are convenient to have if your little one is staying over at a grandparent's house, or for a last-minute weekend away.

But around two thirds of the portable cots we test in our labs fail key safety requirements.

Many don't have sufficiently firm mattresses (a suffocation risk), or they may lack an all-round mesh covering to allow for breathability and ventilation.

CHOICE received a few requests to test the Aeromoov Instant Travel cot, which claims to be "the fastest travel cot in the world". It's also one of the lighter models we've tested (5.4kg, compared with 16kg or even more for some models).

In our review, our expert Antonio Bonacruz tested the Aeromoov to Australian safety standards, and also assessed its ease of use (he's had many years of experience seeing all types of travel cots pass through the CHOICE doors).

Setting up the Aeromoov

Is this model really "the fastest travel cot in the world"? Antonio found it very easy to set up the Aeromoov's frame: simply release a velcro strap and gently pop the frame open. It's light enough to invert if you pop it open the wrong way.

Unfortunately, while that part is quick enough, the frame is only part of the story.

Antonio noted how fiddly it was for him to attach the mattress to the cot's base (which adds to its set-up time). Doing this correctly is very important to reduce the risk of any entrapment hazards. You need to pass four velcro straps through accompanying slits, which is a very awkward process not helped by the snug and firm mattress board.

The Aeromoov has a bassinet mode for infants, and it's similarly difficult to attach the mattress in this mode, too.

The instructions are adequate, with sufficient information about how to operate the cot, but not all the required safety markings are evident.

Putting the Aeromoov away

In the lower cot mode, detaching the mattress by disengaging the velcro straps is an OK process but in bassinet mode it's more difficult to access the straps.

Folding the frame is very easy; you lie the cot on its side, and push at the marked spot to fold the frame down.

How safe is the Aeromoov?

Around two-thirds of the portable cots we test in the CHOICE labs fail at least one key safety requirement. The Aeromoov is no different; its mattress is insufficiently firm in both the lower cot position and upper bassinet positions.

We test firmness to an accepted method that is referenced in the household cot standard using a special apparatus. In bassinet mode, we noted some sagging along the parting line of the mattress segments. In the lower cot position we also noticed a lack of firmness near the corners where the fabric cover is puffy.

Antonio also noted that the Aeromoov feels quite flimsy with the sides, ends, top rails and the base tending to deform and flex a lot.

To its credit, it does have all-round mesh sides, which allow for breathability.

In response to our findings, Aeromoov's manufacturer said it would be looking to make appropriate adjustments in order to comply with the standard.

What comes with the Aeromoov?

Out of the box, you don't get much. The Aeromoov is expensive, at $399, yet you still need to pay extra for features that are found as standard with other cots including:

  • Fitted sheet ($40)
  • Mosquito net ($40)
  • Sunshade ($40)

Is it worth it?

Our tests show many safer cots which are just as light. They may take a little longer to set up and put away, but the extra minute or two is worth it for peace of mind. This model's also quite expensive and doesn't come with some of the extra features that are available with other models.

instant travel cot

2-second set-up

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot can be set up and folded away in seconds! It is unbelievable how easy it is. Actually the cot does it by itself, so anyone can manage it. It is hugely different from heavy travel cots.

No physical strain, no stress!

instant travel cot

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot weighs less than 5 kg. Lugging a heavy, awkward cot around is now a thing of the past. This travel cot is light, practical and easily packed away in a convenient carrying bag.

Even a big brother or sister can easily carry it.

instant travel cot

With a quality mattress for optimal comfort

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot has a solid PU foam mattress that is 3 cm thick. That is important for good back support. The travel cot also complies with the strictest baby safety standards EN716-1-2008 and A1-2013. A fitted sheet is also available separately for the mattress.

instant travel cot

2 levels for babies and toddlers

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot has 2 levels: a low level and a medium level. The extra medium level is specifically for babies up to 2 months. It stops you from having to bend over too much to get your baby out of the cot. When your child can sit upright or weighs more than 6 kg, it is time to move to the lower level.

The mattress level is easy to adjust. Your child will always sleep and play as safely as possible. The complete mattress is 110x60cm. The lower level can therefore be used safely until your child is able to climb out of the bed on its own.

instant travel cot

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot folds away very compactly for easy storage in an elegant, slimline carrying bag. You can store the travel cot in the narrowest of places: next to a wardrobe, under the stairs or in whatever spot you can find.

Of course a compact, lightweight cot is also perfect to take with you in the car or go travelling.

instant travel cot

At home you can use it in the garden, on the balcony, in the living room, kitchen, bedroom or office. You can create the perfect play or sleeping environment in no time at all. And what about a sleepover at granny and granddad's or a visit to friends? The travel cot is easy to take with you. It gives your little one the chance to have a lovely nap wherever you go.

It is great on holiday and for the beach: thanks to the transparent sides, you can keep your eye on your child constantly as it plays and sleeps. As the AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot is perfect for indoor and outdoor use, a sunshade and mosquito net are available separately.

Another clever feature are the 2 cavities for your feet under the cot that will spare your back as you lift your child.

Frequently asked questions

Up to what age can i use the travel cot.

There is no maximum age with this travel cot. The complete mattress (at base level) measures 110 x 60 cm. This guarantees safe use for years until your little one is old enough to climb out of bed on his/her own.

Up to what age can I use the intermediate level?

The additional intermediate level was especially designed for babies up to approx. 6 kg. As soon as baby sits independently or weighs more than 6 kg it is time to switch to the base level.

How do I set up the travel cot?

Remove the travel cot and the mattress from the bag and undo the Velcro attachment of the travel cot. Unfold the travel cot and insert the mattress.

How do I set up the intermediate level?

On the inside of the travel cot you’ll find a zipper you can use to zip in the intermediate level. Unzip the short section of mattress and use the Velcro strip to attach it to the underside of the longer section of mattress. This provides additional support for your toddler.

How do I fold the travel cot?

Remove the mattress from the travel cot. Place the travel cot on its side with the underside facing you. Place your hand on the top yellow arrow and push downwards towards the bottom yellow arrow. The ring on the side arch of the cot helps the bottom slide upwards. Fold the cot in such a way that the rings on the other side also slide upwards.

How do I clean my travel cot?

You can easily clean your travel cot with a damp cloth, and to avoid extra spots, combine it with the AeroSleep Mattress Protector and AeroSleep Cover.

Best travel cot 2023: lightweight cots for travel

Attempting travel with a baby? The best travel cot will make sure you’re suitably armed, and they’re suitably snuggly

Two toddlers playing in a blue travel cot – one of the best travel cots you can buy

The best travel cot? Be honest, it’s something you didn’t even know existed until you became a parent and had to take a trip. Do you have to travel with a bed for your baby? Well, yes, you do, they're just as essential as the best car seats and best suitcases , and luckily there are so many incredible new designs that hitting the road with your littlest is that little bit easier.

We give you the travel cot, the portable crib, and the basket bed … here are all the latest and the best products on the market which allow you to travel light even though you’re now packing an extra person.

How to buy the best travel cot

Why you can trust T3 Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

First off, you might be surprised to find out that travel cots aren’t just for travel. If you’re stuck for space at home, regularly splitting time between two places, want a safe place to keep them corralled while you pop off for a second (see above), or like to have a spare for friends’ babies when they pop round for a coffee (the friend, that is, not the baby), a travel cot is a sensible solution.

But when it does come to travel, having your own portable cot means that you needn’t worry about whether that Airbnb has all the necessaries or that hotel webpage is up to date, and it also gives baby a familiar place to sleep, eliminating one more reason for them to get lairy while you’re on the road.

And it’s what you’ll be using it for that’ll mostly dictate the type of travel crib you want.

Compact foldable cots or bassinets are best for chucking in a suitcase or luggage locker on the plane, while trips by car simply call for something that can fit in the boot. The more lightweight they are, the more you might question the fact that they’re deemed suitably sturdy for a human child, but between rigorous manufacturer testing and great reviews across the board, you can rest assured each of our picks will keep them safe as houses, even if you’re a long way away from yours.

You might be wondering if travel cots are safe to sleep in? The answer is yes, as long as you buy the right one and your child doesn't sleep in it all the time. Read our guide linked above for more information on travel cot safety.

Finally, for maximum mileage when it comes to the initial spend, look for a model that comes with an included mattress, adjustable levels for rapidly growing babes, and more.

The best travel cots you can buy today:

Graphite/Black Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

1. Micralite Sleep&Go Travel Cot

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Sleep&Go Travel Cot is a well-designed piece of kit that hopes to make travelling with little ones a breeze. It sets itself apart from rivals by being adaptable: it's a travel cot one minute, playpen the next, and can even transform into a newborn co-sleeper. Perhaps best of all, it's able to transform between these functions in seconds thanks to its innovative all-in-one frame.

It lets itself down slightly with the lack of colour options, and the fact that it's not the smallest when folded.

With an RRP of £150, it sits firmly in the upper-mid-range price category, but it's durable materials, solid build, and innovative features mean it more than earns its place at the top of our list.

A blue mesh travel cot by BabyBjorn

2. BabyBjorn Travel Cot Light

Praise be to Björn Jakobson, granddaddy of all things baby-related — his brainchild BabyBjorn still leads the pack when it comes to travel cots, with this one getting our second spot for its practical, paediatrician-approved design. The foldable travel cot packs down into a neat carry case with padded shoulder straps and a waist belt for easy transportation, and we love how compact it is, not to mention easy to set up, which is a real bonus when there’s unpacking to be done.

The mattress has been designed in conjunction with paediatric specialists to provide the best support possible, but the only problem is that it’s at floor level, so if you have shorter arms, bear in mind it might take some effort, or the help of a taller family member.

Nuna SENA Aire

3. Nuna SENA Aire

The thing about parenthood is that you always have your hands full, and when it comes to travelling with kids, that goes double. So welcome the SENA Aire, a thoughtfully designed travel cot from premium baby gear brand Nuna that can be set-up not only quickly, but with one hand. Its zigzag legs pop-up instantly, and come with padded edges so you cannot trap you finger in a hinge while you’re seeing it up.

However, the SENA Aire’s main USP is what its name suggests; an advanced air design delivers maximum airflow that will give its inhabitant deeper sleeps. That’s the theory. Elsewhere, the SENA Aire gives the travelling parents everything they need, including a mattress, sheets, an insect net and even cotton sheets. Best of all, it’s all machine washable, and goes neatly into a travel bag.

Inovi Cocoon Folding Moses

4. Inovi Cocoon Folding Moses

Here’s one for youngsters taking their first flights. Suitable for the under six months crowd, this simple crib won’t be with you for long, but it’s sure to impress any parent thinking of taking a flight to show-off their new addition. A simple and nice-looking crib that could easily be used at home, the Cocoon is compact and lightweight enough for travel, even complying with international aviation standards (IATA) so it can be taken on a plane as hand luggage, and stowed in overhead locker compartments (minus junior, we hope).

It also includes a mesh canopy that protects baby from the outside world – including insects, pets and curious passers-by – while being itself constructed atom transparent, breathable mesh panels. The Cocoon is also easy to set-up, with four locking joints on its fold-out base for maximum stability.

Phil & Teds Traveller Travel Cot

5. Phil & Teds Traveller Travel Cot

Like the BabyBjorn travel cot, this Phil & Teds option is suitable for use from birth to three years, making it a good option if you’re after a longer-term solution. The big difference between the two is that this little number is more suited to long-haul travel, with a weight of just 3.2 kilograms and an ultra-compact design that’s formulated to fit in a suitcase, luggage locker, or even the storage space of your buggy.

Reviewers found it was a bit awkward to set up, but that it was light, sturdy and comfy enough to make up for it, so we reckon it sounds just fine if you’re setting up camp for a while.

Dark grey SpaceCot Travel Cot

6. SpaceCot Travel Cot

If the combination of quick setup and sturdiness is the holy grail of travel cots, then call us Indiana Jones, because we seem to have found it in the SpaceCot Travel Cot. The makers say it opens and closes in just three seconds — a big boast, but reviewers vouch for its veracity.

They found it super easy to set up, and loved the included detachable crib levels and mattress that let it work as a cot up to six months, and a playpen up to 30 months. If you frequently find yourself with your hands too full for faffing around, all signs point to this easy-up cot being a good buy.

LittleLife Arc 2

7. LittleLife Arc 2

OK, it’s a tent. Get over it. Kids love camping! Seriously though, the tent-style Arc 2 has a lot going for it, especially if you travel a lot because (and this is a stroke of genius) the Arc 2 packs-up into a small lightweight backpack. A pop-up tent weighing a mere 2.5kg, it uses colour-coded, lightweight aluminium poles and comes with a Velcro-attached foam mattress and washable cotton cover.

Although it can be used indoors perfectly well, as its design suggests, the Arc 2 can also be used outdoors, and be secured with tent pegs. It works as a bed, a playpen, and just as a place to keep a child out of the sun. If you’re an outdoorsy kind of a family, the Arc 2 is a no-brainer.

Koo-Di Pop Up Bassinet

8. Pop Up Bassinet Koo-Di

Designed for use in the house or out in the garden, at the beach or for trips somewhere rather sunnier, the Koo-Di Sun and Sleep Travel Bassinet looks to be a versatile option for keeping the smallest member of your group happy, cool, and out of the sun.

The mesh sides are intended for ventilation and peace of mind, allowing you to check on them as they (hopefully) snooze, while the integrated zip-up mosquito net keeps nibbles at bay, and the blackout blind claims to block 93 percent of all harmful rays. That’s all pretty high tech for a travel cot, making it our best bet for travel abroad and hot summer days at home.

Chicco Lullago Zip Crib travel cot

9. Chicco Lullago Zip Crib

This expandable travel crib gives the option for different depths as they grow, giving it more lasting power than some of our smaller picks, and making it, according to happy reviewers, a great transitional cot. Users loved that it was sturdy and easy to put together, but found it a bit heavy to carry — although, while the travel bag is a bit more cumbersome than its BabyBjorn equivalent, some might appreciate that it looks more like your average minimal tote bag rather than a baby-specific behemoth.

Overall, it’s agreed that the quality is top-notch and the setup simple, but if you have to travel a long way, you might be better placed going for something like Phil & Ted’s travel cot.

Joie Excursion Travel Cot with detachable changing mat and rocker

10. Joie Excursion Change & Rock Travel Cot0

Trying to get them off to sleep isn’t the only thing that can prove tricky on the road - there’s also the small matter of changing to attend to. Luckily, some clever clogs at Joie has made a travel cot that doubles up as a changing table. Actually, make that triples up, because it also packs in a soothing rocker with soft toys. And it has wheels!

With a draught-resistant base and mesh lining for a comfortable sleep, a rocker/bassinet for soothing and naps, and a changing table for you-know-what, reviewers agree this is a great portable option for when you want to streamline your stuff. Just be aware that it’s very large and very heavy, so it’s not the best for small cars and certainly won’t fit in a suitcase, but gosh darn is it versatile.

Aeromoov Sunshade for Instant Travel Cot

Postage Estimator

The AeroMoov travel cot can be set up and folded back up in seconds! It is super light and compact. Perfect for at home and on the go. Your child can play happily and sleep safely wherever you go.

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot weighs less than 5kg. Lugging a heavy, awkward cot around is now a thing of the past. This travel cot is light, practical and easily packed away in a convenient carrying bag.

The AeroMoov Instant Travel Cot has a solid PU foam mattress that is 3 cm thick. That is important for good back support.

Specifications: - Folded Measurements (lwh): 71 x 12 x 72 cm. - Unfolded Measurements (lwh): 130 x 92 x 63 cm. - Mattress size: 110 x 60cm - Weight: 5kg - 2 levels.

What to do in Samara? Here are 10 ideas for a trip!

instant travel cot

1. Stroll along Russia's longest embankment

instant travel cot

Yes, the embankment of the River Volga in Samara is the longest in the country. It is over four kilometers in length and one of the most popular places in the city. It has a small, sandy beach, where you can sunbathe or play volleyball. The embankment also has cycle lanes, intriguing art objects, monumental multi-level staircases, “singing” fountains, fountains with light effects and, of course, plenty of space for strolling (and taking scenic photos!).

2.  Descend to a real bunker built for Stalin

instant travel cot

The bomb shelter under the Institute of Culture was only declassified in 1990. When the Great Patriotic War broke out, many factories, as well as cultural and official institutions, were evacuated to Samara (then Kuybyshev). The city was considered a "standby" capital of the USSR. The bunker was built in 1942 and was based on the designs of the ‘Aeroport’ subway station on the Moscow Metro. It lies 37 meters underground, with ample space for meeting rooms, office accommodation and Stalin's own office - incidentally, he never actually visited it himself. You will, however, have to go on a guided tour by appointment in order to gain access.

3. Learn about space

instant travel cot

A real R-7 space rocket is installed next to the Samara Space Museum. Rockets of this series typically send crewed spacecraft and satellites into orbit. Rockets of the R-7 family have been produced by the Samara-based Progress Rocket Space Center since 1958.

The main building of the museum is currently closed, due to the construction of a new planetarium. A temporary space exhibition is currently housed at the nearby ‘Gudok’ shopping center.

4.  Stop by the oldest brewery

instant travel cot

Samara is the birthplace of the most famous Soviet beer. Waiting lines still form outside the flagship store at the Zhigulevsky Brewery for a freshly-brewed batch. It only keeps for a couple of days and has become a local tourist attraction. You can take it home or down a glass at the brewery’s restaurant.

Zhigulevsky Brewery was founded in 1881 by Austrian entrepreneur Alfred von Vacano: He chose Samara, because of the clean water in the River Volga and the town's convenient logistics. In the Soviet period, production was regulated by a state standard and Zhigulevskoye beer was made at more than 700 breweries across the country.

5.  Take a look at the merchant houses

instant travel cot

Samara was founded in 1586, but the majority of its historical houses date from the 19th century. The city center has Gothic mansions, wooden buildings and Art Nouveau houses. All this rubs shoulders with Soviet and contemporary architecture.

6.  Take a boat ride to the Zhiguli Mountains

instant travel cot

The Zhiguli Mountains, located in the Samara Bend National Park (named after a hairpin bend in the river), can be seen from the Volga embankment. One of the most interesting places there is the village of Shiryayevo, which can be reached on a scheduled service from the river boat station. There, amid tree-covered mountains, Ilya Repin painted sketches for his 'Barge Haulers on the Volga'.

7.  See a factory-kitchen in the shape of a hammer and sickle

instant travel cot

In the early years of the Soviet Union, it was a popular belief that people should be released from domestic chores. One of the country's first "factory-kitchens" (i.e. large public canteens) was put up in Samara in 1929 - and it was built in the shape of a hammer and sickle. Three thousand dinners were cooked there every day. The building now houses a branch of the Tretyakov Gallery.

8.  Take a ride on the subway

instant travel cot

Samara is one of seven Russian cities with a subway system. It was opened in 1987 and consists of just 10 stations. ‘Gagarinskaya’ station has a space theme: The dark blue mosaics on the walls depict a starry sky, while the columns are star shaped. ‘Pobeda’ station was designed in honor of the USSR's victory in the Great Patriotic War. ‘Sportivnaya’ station, meanwhile, is dedicated to Russian sporting achievements.

9.  Pet a cat on a radiator

instant travel cot

At the front entrance of the Samara State Regional Power Station stands an unusual art object. It portrays a cat lounging on a window sill warming itself above a hot radiator. It was installed in 2005 to mark the 150th anniversary of the invention of the radiator (yes, they were invented in Russia - in St. Petersburg, to be precise). And the figure of the cat was based on numerous photographs sent in to the power plant by local residents.

The cat has already become the object of myths - it is said that if you stroke its nose, your wish will come true. Please note how brightly polished its nose is!

10.  See the sunset in Pushkin Square

instant travel cot

The most romantic place in Samara has to be the observation point in the Pushkin Square park. The whole city and the Volga River can be seen from there and the sunsets here are particularly picturesque!

History of Samara

Foundation of samara.

For the first time, the name of the Samara River was mentioned in the notes of the secretary of the Arab embassy and traveler Ahmed ibn Fadlan as “Samur” in 921. In 1586, by the decree of Tsar Feodor I Ioannovich, the fortress named “Samarskiy gorodok” (literally “the town of Samara”) was founded on the bank of the Samara River near its confluence with the Volga.

Its main purpose was to control the vast territory of the middle reaches of the Volga and the mouth of the Samara, to protect Russia from the raids of nomads, and to provide a waterway from Kazan to Astrakhan.

During the 17th century, the fortress grew and continued to fortify. In 1688, it was renamed and became the town of Samara. After the devastating fires of 1700 and 1703, a new (so-called “earthen”) fortress was built in Samara in 1704-1706. In the 1740s, Samara became the center of the Orenburg expedition, which founded the towns of Orenburg and Stavropol-on-Volga (present-day Tolyatti).

In 1780, the coat of arms of Samara was approved with the following description: “A wild white goat standing on the grass in a blue field”. The image of the coat of arms exactly repeated the banner of the Samara regiment from the collection of banners of the regiments of the Russian Empire (1729-1730). In 1782, the first site plan for the town’s development was approved.

More Historical Facts…

Samara in the 19th - the first half of the 20th centuries

In 1850, Emperor Nicholas I issued a decree on the creation of the Samara Governorate with the center in Samara. The population of the town was about 15 thousand people. By the end of the 19th century, it increased to 90 thousand people. By 1916, about 150 thousand people lived in Samara.

During this period, the Samara Governorate ranked first in the Russian Empire in terms of the amount of harvested wheat. In 1874, the construction of the Orenburg Railway began. In 1877, it passed through Samara. The Samara pier was one of the best on the Volga River. In 1915, the first electric tram started operating.

In 1928, Samara became the center of Middle Volga Oblast. In 1929, it was transformed into Middle Volga Krai. In 1935, the region was renamed Kuybyshev Krai. In December 1936, after secession from the region of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, it was transformed into Kuybyshev Oblast. On January 27, 1935, Samara was renamed Kuybyshev, in honor of the Soviet statesman and party leader V.V. Kuybyshev (1888-1935).

In July-October 1941, during the Second World War, a number of enterprises from the western regions of the USSR and their personnel with their families were evacuated to this city, as well as The Council of People’s Commissars of the Soviet Union (the highest collegial body of executive and administrative authority), The Supreme Soviet of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (the most authoritative legislative body), diplomatic missions, large cultural institutions (for example, the Bolshoi Theater, Mosfilm). This city became, in fact, the second capital of the USSR after Moscow.

A special underground bunker-residence was built for Stalin, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. However, the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command, the State Defense Committee (the highest authority in the country), and the General Staff of the Red Army remained in Moscow. On March 5, 1942, Shostakovich’s Seventh Leningrad Symphony was completed and performed for the first time in Kuybyshev.

From 1940 to 1945, the level of industrial production in the city increased 5.5 times. The population grew from 400 to 600 thousand people. During the war years, about 28 thousand Il-2 and Il-10 attack aircraft were produced at its factories - about 80% of their total number.

Samara in the second half of the 20th century and beyond

After the Second World War, Kuybyshev became one of the largest industrial and cultural centers in the USSR. The city economy was based on the aviation, space, machine-building, metallurgical, electrical, cable, oil refining, and light industries. From 1960 to 1991, because of the large number of military enterprises, Kuibyshev was a city closed to foreigners.

All Soviet and Russian cosmonauts were launched into space on R-7 launch vehicles produced by the Samara enterprise “TsSKB-Progress” (JSC “Space Rocket Centre “Progress”). This also applies to the first cosmonaut of the planet Yuri Gagarin. After landing in the area of the city of Engels, he was taken to Kuybyshev for rest. From here he reported by phone to the head of state N.S. Khrushchev on the successful completion of the first manned space flight in the history of mankind.

In addition to the development of industry, there were significant changes in the socio-economic development of the city. On September 14, 1967, the millionth resident was born in Kuybyshev. In 1968, the TU-154 aircraft began to be mass-produced in Samara. In 1987, the city reached its maximum population of 1,280,000 people.

On January 25, 1991, the historical name Samara was returned to the city. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the USSR, the problem of transforming military enterprises for the production of civilian products arose. A lot of large enterprises went bankrupt. Small-scale production of goods appeared in their place, as well as shopping centers and various cultural institutions (clubs, movie theaters, bars, restaurants, etc.). The loss of jobs, the slowdown in economic growth had a negative impact on the demographic situation and the state of the city’s infrastructure.

In the 2000s, the construction segment was actively developing in Samara. At the same time, there was no general strategy for building the city, which eventually led to a deterioration in the general architectural style of the city and the quality of the infrastructure. In 2018, six matches of the FIFA World Cup were held in Samara.

Samara - Features

Samara is located on the left bank of the Volga River (Saratov Reservoir) opposite the Samara bend, at the confluence of the Samara (hence the city’s name) and Sok rivers. The City Day of Samara is celebrated on the second weekend of September.

The climate is moderately continental. Summers are hot and rather humid. Winters are moderately frosty, snowy and long. The average temperature in July is plus 23.5 degrees Celsius, in January - minus 9.9 degrees Celsius.

Samara is a major center for mechanical engineering and metalworking, food, as well as space and aviation industries. It is one of the main scientific centers of Russia in the space and aviation fields.

The city is one of the largest transport hubs in Russia, through which the shortest routes from Central and Western Europe to Siberia, Central Asia, and Kazakhstan run. The Kurumoch International Airport located 42 km from Samara offers regular flights to Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Krasnodar, Moscow, Nizhnevartovsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Novy Urengoy, Omsk, Perm, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Surgut, Ufa, Dubai, Istanbul, and other cities.

From the pier of the Samara river station, you can go on boat trips along the Volga, cruises to cities located along the river - Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Volgograd, Tolyatti. Passenger transportation in the city is carried out by buses, minibuses, trams, trolleybuses, and the subway.

The architectural heritage of Samara that has survived to this day is one of the richest in Russia. During a walking tour of the historical center of Samara, you can see buildings of the 19th - early 20th centuries preserving the atmosphere of an old merchant city. Samara has one of the longest river embankments in Russia (about 5 km) and the tallest railway station building in Europe (101 meters) with an observation deck (Komsomolskaya Square, 1).

In Samara, the most popular urban legends are associated with underground objects and tunnels through which you can allegedly go under the Volga River and get out on its other bank or on the islands. Rumors about the presence of a network of underground communications are caused by the presence of a large cave within the city limits (The Brothers Greve Cave), as well as a large number of underground structures, such as Stalin’s Bunker, Beria’s Bunker, and the former Army Headquarters bunker.

Main Attractions of Samara

Samara Embankment - one of the most beautiful places in Samara and one of the best embankments in Russia. It stretches along the bank of the Volga for more than 4 km and descends to the river in terraces. A lot of tourists, having arrived in the city, immediately go to the embankment to see the Volga. Residents of Samara also love to come here, breathe clean air and enjoy the picturesque panorama of the great Russian river.

From the nearby pier, ships go on river cruises along the Volga. A river trip is a great opportunity to admire Samara and a good alternative to a bus tour of the city on a hot summer day. City holidays are often held on the embankment.

The embankment of Samara harmoniously combines the advantages of the beach and promenade with places for active recreation and sports. There are cafes and restaurants, benches and fountains, boat and bicycle rentals, paths for cyclists and roller skaters.

There are a lot of interesting art objects on this embankment including a monument to a heating radiator, the sculptural composition “The Barge Haulers on the Volga” and a sculpture of Comrade Sukhov from the famous Soviet movie “White Sun of the Desert”, who was a native of a village near Samara.

Zhigulevskoye Brewery - one of the most visited sights of Samara, which is the birthplace of the famous throughout Russia “Zhigulevskoye” beer. Here you can not only taste original beers, but also go on an excursion and observe the production process.

This brewery located on the bank of the Volga River is one of the oldest in Russia. It was built by the hereditary Austrian brewer Alfred von Vacano in 1881. The building of the brewery is a monument of architecture and an object of cultural heritage of Russia. Volzhskiy Avenue, 4.

Iversky Convent (1860) - a beautiful architectural complex located in the immediate vicinity of Zhigulevskoye Brewery. There are several churches here. You can walk around the territory of the monastery. Volzhskiy Avenue, 1.

Samara Space Museum - one of the youngest museums in the city opened in 2007. It immediately became one of the symbols of Samara. Here you can see a real Soyuz launch vehicle organically integrated into the facade of the museum building. This architectural project has become one of the most original and interesting in Samara.

Actually, the museum is a pedestal on which the rocket stands. Together with the spacecraft, its height reaches 68 m. The exposition is divided into two parts. The first includes space instruments and spacecraft models. The second part is devoted not so much to technology as to people in space, their way of life and everyday activities. Lenin Avenue, 21.

Stalin’s Bunker - one of the alternative locations of the headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the USSR I.V. Stalin, built in Samara at a depth of 37 meters in 1942. Until 1990, it was a classified object. Today, a museum dedicated to the Second World War is open in the bunker.

The object is located under the building of the Academy of Culture and Art, which previously housed the Kuibyshev Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. For the construction of the bunker, the design of the metro station “Aeroport” in Moscow was copied. Frunze Street, 167.
