Travel Nevada Unveils New Brand Creative, Inviting Travelers to “Get a Little Out There” in the Silver State

Posted: October 25, 2023

Carson City, Nev. – Nevada is sharing its huge-hearted story with the world in its new tourism campaign and renewed purpose. “Get a Little Out There” invites travelers to see the state in a new light – one that will surprise, challenge, delight, and change them through Nevada’s beautifully uncommon backyard and curious character.

The new brand is the culmination of extensive research, including a brand positioning study, target audience research, cultural/market studies, and a 12-state competitive analysis conducted by Travel Nevada’s creative and digital agency of record, Noble Studios. The research found that, while visitors appreciate Nevada for its outdoor recreation opportunities, their affinity for the state lies in the wide variety of activities and experiences found throughout. This diversity of exciting adventures elicits transformative travel experiences.

“The purpose of Travel Nevada is to share the heart of Nevada with the world. That heart is a literal and figurative place to be in our state. It is our passion, our pride, our land, and our people,” said Caroline Sexton, Chief Marketing Officer of Travel Nevada. “To truly experience this, you have to be willing to get a little out there. We want to encourage visitors to embrace adventure by exploring our 60 million acres of public land, where they’ll find incredibly diverse landscapes, thrilling recreational activities, rich history, and hidden gems.”

The new brand will roll out over the next few weeks, with a website relaunch, an activation at the state’s annual Nevada Day celebration in Carson City, and a media event in New York City. Additional assets will continue rolling out over the next few months, including a robust multi-channel paid and earned media program developed and executed by Travel Nevada’s media and public relations agencies of record, Fahlgren Mortine and Good Giant.

“Tourism continues to be a powerful economic force for the state,” said Stavros Anthony, Lieutenant Governor of Nevada and chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism. “I’m excited to see this new brand platform drive more visitors into and throughout the Silver State, contributing to a vibrant quality of life for all Nevadans.”

Nevada welcomed nearly 52 million visitors and collected more than $31 million in room taxes from April 2022 to March 2023.

“’Get a Little Out There’ really captures the spirit of Nevada, and I can’t wait to see the new brand campaign come to life over the next several months,” said Brenda Scolari, Director of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. “It will introduce millions of potential visitors to the unexpected experiences and delightful contradictions you can encounter in our state when you get a little out there, beyond the neon lights – whether marveling at the Milky Way in some of the world’s darkest skies, to exploring ghost towns and encountering colorful modern art installations in the middle of the desert.”

Nevada Tours & Vacations

Sunset at Red Rock Canyon, with red mountains, a purple sky, and fluffy clouds, Las Vegas, Nevada

Nevada is the most mountainous state in the United States and home to magnificent National Parks.

It's also where you will find Las Vegas which has an edgy excitement all its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, and dining in the country. However, there is more to Nevada than its world-famous 'Sin City'. While there's no denying Las Vegas offers plenty of excitement, nothing can compare to the thrill of exploring Nevada's stunning natural landscape. The Valley of Fire, the state's oldest and biggest state park, draws visitors from around the world who come to marvel at dramatic red rock canyons, sandstone cliffs and ancient petrified trees. Along with catching a big-name show or partying the night away in Las Vegas, you can explore the wilderness on two wheels , hike through incredible backcountry, spot peregrine falcons in the wild, marvel at the mighty Hoover Dam and raft through the Black Canyon. Nevada is the perfect destination for a small group tour that’s big on variety and adventure.

Nevada travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Nevada?

Getting to Nevada is relatively easy with a number of different transportation options available.

These include flying into Reno or Las Vegas, embarking on a road trip from one of the neighbouring states, or catching public transport in the form of a bus or a train with several routes taking you to various destinations within the state.

Getting around Nevada

Getting around Nevada is relatively easy due to the many transportation options available.

If you're arriving by car, it is easy to drive around the state with major highways that are easy to navigate and well-maintained.

You can also fly between popular destinations within the state. It is possible to travel by bus between most towns in Nevada, but the train network is limited.

What is the weather like in Nevada?

Nevada's climate is very similar to that of neighboring states such as Utah in that it has a very dry, semi-arid, and desert climate.

This means that summers can get very hot although there is little chance of humidity as Nevada is considered one of the driest states in America.

Despite the dry, desert-like climate, Nevada still experiences four very distinct seasons with temperatures in winter averaging between 32°F and 59°F.

What to pack for Nevada

What to pack for Nevada depends on what time of the year you're traveling in but regardless of the season, there are some items you should always pack.

Some of these items include sensible and comfortable walking shoes (most likely you'll be doing a lot of hiking during your time in Nevada), a sun hat or cap, and some sunscreen (especially in summer).

If you're traveling in winter, be sure to pack trousers, sweaters, waterproof jackets, and thick coats to keep yourself warm.

When is the best time to visit Nevada?

The best time to visit Nevada depends on what you want to get out of your vacation and what activities you want to do while there.

Regarding the weather, the best time to visit Nevada is between April and mid-June (before temperatures get too high.) Or from August to mid-October, as the state is filled with the beautiful fall colors of orange, red, and brown.

If you're planning on trekking through some of the state's national parks, then traveling during summer is advised against (unless you undertake extra planning) as temperatures can exceed 100°F.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone in Nevada?

Your mobile coverage should be fine if you stick to the popular cities in Nevada, such as Las Vegas.

If you plan on spending time in one of the state's many national parks, you could experience some disruptions.

Most national parks have reception areas or tourist hubs with mobile phone access. If you're hiking through the park or you've stopped at a high-altitude viewpoint, then your service is likely to be weak and unreliable.

What is the internet access like in Nevada?

If you stick to the popular cities in Nevada such as Las Vegas, then your internet coverage shouldn't be affected.

If you're planning on spending time in one of the state's many national parks then you could experience some disruptions.

Most national parks have reception areas or tourist hubs where Wi-Fi access is available but if you're hiking through the park or you've stopped at a high-altitude viewpoint then your service is likely to be weak and unreliable.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

How to Choose the Right Tour Group

Group size, participants’ age range, style of travel and budget are among the factors you should consider when selecting an itinerary.

An illustration shows a stylized globe with buildings ranging from an old church to the Chrysler Building skyscraper. In the center of the globe, tourists in sunglasses and hats and T-shirts roam around the building. One group in particular is enlarged, with the central figure holding up a selfie stick with a cellphone, taking a photo of his group.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

Tour companies that offer multiday trips arrange most everything for you: lodging, sightseeing, food and transportation. But group size, style of travel and budget are among the considerations travelers should assess before picking a tour. Read on for tips.

Big group or small

Start your research by thinking about how many people you want to travel with and what your tolerance is for the social demands dictated by group size.

Smaller groups can move more nimbly and possibly see more. But they can also be more intensely social as you spend a great deal of time with the same people touring and dining.

Larger groups tend to require more time to get around, but they can also offer more social variety — for example, you can change up your lunch partners more easily.

“Large groups offer anonymity, allowing travelers to choose their level of interaction,” said Deborah Miller, a travel adviser and the owner of Edge of Wonder Travels Unlimited in San Francisco. “Conversely, smaller groups foster intimacy among travelers, guides and the destination itself.”

Look for age-appropriate trips

Think about the demographics of your travel party and consider matching that to a tour company.

Operators often segment their trips by age under the assumption that similarly aged people have more in common or prefer the same pace. Road Scholar , for example, caters to an intellectually curious 50-plus crowd.

On the other end of the spectrum, G Adventures offers a category of trips for “18-to-thirtysomethings” and Intrepid Travel has trips for 18-to-35-year-olds.

With their inherent age spans, families can be a tough demographic to fit into larger group departures, which is why companies tend to break up family offerings by age group.

The active tour company Backroads has three age segments for families, including trips for those with children 4 to 19, those with older teens and younger adults into their 20s, and those with children in their 20s and beyond.

“By definition, that creates somewhat of an age segmentation among parents, too,” said Tom Hale, the founder, president and chief executive of Backroads.

Go general or specific

A popular option for first-timers, a general tour will hit the highlights of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in Paris or major sites in Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.

Beyond the general approach, alternatives abound based on themes, styles of travel or hobbies.

Themed trips include a culinary tour of Sicily , a deep dive into literary England , Europe’s World War II battlefields and how women live in India .

In addition to topics, trips often revolve around the means of travel, such as going by train , on foot or by boat (a category that can be further segmented by size, from a cruise ship to a barge or a kayak ).

Tours can also allow you to pursue an interest like swimming or knitting in a unique destination.

Analyze tour inclusions

Once you determine where and how you want to go, prices will range from budget to luxury.

“For travelers on a budget, large group tours tend to be the best fit because it’s a great way to see major attractions at a lower price point,” said Cheyenne Schriefer, a travel adviser and the owner of All Travel Matters in Golden Valley, N.D.

But not all tours are built the same. To compare them, consider what they include.

For example, G Adventures has a 10-day hiking trip in Switzerland from $1,799 a person and a 10-day hiking trip in Portugal for $4,499. The latter is billed as a luxury trip, so the accommodations are pricier, but it also includes most meals, transfers and activities. The Swiss tour offers more basic lodgings, transfers, optional activities available for a fee, and fewer meals.

“Sometimes fewer inclusions are better than more,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of Frommer Media, which publishes Frommer’s guidebooks . She pointed out that restaurants that can accommodate busloads probably don’t attract local traffic and that independent sightseeing allows you to “wander through local neighborhoods to get the feel of local life.”

Expertise of the guide or tour leader can also alter the price and the experience. You can expect to pay more for a tour led by a specialist, such as an Egyptologist guiding a group along the Nile.

Gauge your level of independence

Do you prefer to follow a strict schedule that relieves you from having to find, say, a restaurant for dinner? Or do you appreciate some structure — like knowing your hotel reservations are covered — but also want free time to explore independently?

Tour companies run the gamut. Before booking, read the itineraries carefully to find out if the schedule is tight or loose. If that is not clear, call the company to ask.

For truly independent travelers, self-guided tours offered by companies such as Inntravel , Exodus Adventure Travels and Macs Adventure make your ground arrangements and provide an itinerary to follow. Popular in Europe, these itineraries tend to be inn-to-inn walking or cycling trips that include luggage transfers.

“Self-guided travelers are independent but love the support of having a trip arranged for them, and they don’t want to hike with a big backpack anymore,” said Jasper Verlaan, the U.S. sales director for Macs Adventure.

Ask for recommendations

If you’re still unsure about putting down a deposit once you’ve done your research, ask the tour company if you may speak to a past client.

“Ask for references,” said Lynn Cutler, the senior vice president of travel for Smithsonian Enterprises, which runs the tour company Smithsonian Journeys . “We’ll find them a traveler who has done this trip in the past and put them in touch.”

Counties where children have the best opportunity for economic mobility in Nevada

Americans have long understood that their birthplace can significantly affect their futures, and academics have increasingly been able to connect tangible early life factors like where they live and the friendships they've cultivated with potential future income.

Among the most recent studies shedding light on what's known as economic mobility —a person's ability to move themselves and their families up the socioeconomic ladder over their lifetime—are a series of papers authored by Harvard University researchers leveraging vast troves of social networking data.

As part of a national analysis , Wealth Enhancement Group used data from Harvard University 's Social Capital Atlas project to identify where in Nevada children have the best (and worst) chances at upward economic mobility.

The research draws on a privacy-protected dataset representing 21 billion friendships from Facebook made public through its parent company Meta's Data for Good project. It also uses anonymous tax records, according to the authors. The scholars assigned a score to locales according to how economically connected low- and high-income people living in the area have historically been over at least a decade, per that data. The dataset does not include scores for about 180 of the 3,000 or so counties in the U.S.

The research attempts to fill in the gaps of previous efforts to study American economic mobility that did not consider a person's vast social networks nor their importance in creating better lives for themselves and their children.

It turns out the ability to cultivate friendships linking people of different socioeconomic backgrounds with one another is the strongest factor in determining whether a child can surpass the earning potential of their parents, Harvard researchers found. They call this economic connectedness .

Read on to find out where economic connectedness is strongest in your state.

Nightime at Stamford, Connecticut harbor with a crescent moon

In June 2024, as IEEE President and CEO, I visited Bremen, Germany (to give out an award) and Birmingham, England (for an IEEE milestone, but I included these in my last blog). This is a report on additional travel in June 2024, including meetings during the IEEE meeting series in Toronto.

After spending a couple of days at my home in San Jose, CA, I then went to the Regions 1 and 2 joint meeting in Stamford, Connecticut. All ten IEEE regions have a few meetings every year, but generally they have one large meeting where many of the leaders in these sections as well as other IEEE leaders participate. With this meeting I will have attended 9 out of 10 of these Region meetings. I missed the Region 10 meeting (Asia) as I attended the Region 8 meeting (Europe and Africa).

Like the other region meetings there was discussion on local and well as global IEEE topics and presentations from the many organizational units in the IEEE. Regions 1 and 2 held joint meetings as they are going to merge as a single region (Region 2) by 2028 and these joint meetings help them get ready to work as one region.

After the joint Region 1 and 2 meeting I flew to Denver to attend the International Conference on Communications (ICC) for a day in order to give out the IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award for outstanding contributions to communications technology to Stephen B. Weinstein, Leonard J. Cimini, Jr., and Geoffrey Ye Li for for their work on technology that enables the high data rate capabilities in modern cellular and Wi-Fi systems. The image below shows me in front of an IEEE Communications Society exhibit at the conference.

Me in front of IEEE Communications Society Exhibit at 2024 ICC

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

After my quick trip to Denver, I flew back to the San Francisco Bay area where I was able to spend some time at the first IEEE Computer Society Summit on Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) in Data Centers (CS RAS Summit) in coordination with the Test Technology Technical Community (TTTC). This summit took place June 11-12 in Santa Clara, CA. Jyotika Athavale, President of the IEEE Computer Society, was one of the co-organizers. With the increasing importance of data center computing to support AI training and inference, improving reliability of data centers will help to make computing more efficient and sustainable.

I also gave a remote talk to the IEEE Computer Society Chapters Summit later that week. On Sunday, June 16 I flew to Washington DC in order to visit with Steve Welby, Deputy Director, National Security, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and past Executive Director of the IEEE at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. I spoke with him about how things were going in the IEEE and also about important developments in technology that IEEE could contribute to. The image below shows me and Steve with the White House in the background.

Steve Welby and I next to the White House

While I Washington, DC I also briefly attended the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) Adcom meeting and the International Microwave Symposium (IMS) Welcome Reception. I also got to have a bird’s eye view of the setup of the very large exhibit area for the conference where there were going to be over 1,000 exhibits (I was at the IMS on Monday and the exhibits didn’t officially open until Tuesday). IMS is one of the IEEE’s conferences with a significant industrial presence. Engagement with Industry is one of my priorities for the IEEE in 2024.

From Washington, DC I flew to Toronto, Canada on Tuesday, where the June IEEE meeting series was going to happen. I attended the IEEE Industry Engagement Committee (an IEEE Board of Director’s Standing Committee) meeting on Tuesday where we came up with plans to increase our engagement with industry and provide value, particularly for younger technologists in industry. The next day, Wednesday, I attended the IEEE Future Directions Committee, which is a standing committee in IEEE Technical Activities that focuses on creating activities around emerging and significant technical developments that fall in IEEE’s broad areas of interest.

On Thursday there was a very productive IEEE organization unit alignment lunch which focused on IEEE funding of public imperatives. IEEE public imperatives are activities that IEEE should engage in as a non-profit organization, regardless of whether they generate a surplus or not.

IEEE leaders have aligned on a set of principles that can help us to better achieve our mission of “advancing technology for the benefit of humanity,” including better understanding and possible expansion of public imperative spending. These principles will play a significant role in our 2025 budget and the process for creating the 2026 IEEE budget.

On Friday, after attending IEEE Technical Activities and IEEE-USA meetings (on and off between other engagements) I moderated the first of the 2024 IEEE President-Elect Candidates Forums which was live for those attending the IEEE meeting series, was live-streamed on IEEE.tv and was recorded for IEEE members to view before they started to vote on these and other candidate leaders starting on August 15, 2024.

After the candidate’s forum we had a Karaoke event (IEEE’s got talent) where Executive Director, Sophia Muirhead and I started the session off singing Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”. The Karaoke session was a big success and I was amazed at some of the singing talent in the IEEE! We had singles and groups of IEEE volunteers and staff join in the fun and there was even dancing as well as singing. We ended up running the session for an hour later than scheduled (till 10 PM) and there were still folks signing up for chances to sing when we closed up. The final song was, “Girls just want to have fun”, by Cyndi Lauper.

After Educational Activities, Technical Activities and Member and Geographic Activities meetings on Saturday the IEEE board, including directors elect, and senior staff were invited to a reception by the local Toronto IEEE section. We also invited the local section leaders to our board dinner on Sunday night after the first day of our two-day board meeting.

In the IEEE board of directors meeting, we had several very productive activities. In addition to supporting a new budgeting process that should benefit IEEE overall and enable us to do more good work together, Sophia Muirhead and I spoke about progress we have been making to meeting our objectives in 2024 and beyond (in particular because we are creating our 5-year plan for the IEEE this year, for 2025-2030).

We had presentations by some of our task forces and ad hoc committees on important activities to further our goals including the IEEE Catalyst member and geographic activities (MGA) committee on Engaging Students and Young Professionals in Industry, the Future of Technical and Engineering Education task force, an ad hoc committee on Technology for a Sustainable Climate (continuing activities started in 2023 by Past President Saifur Rahman) and a finance committee on Enabling Strategic Investments and Public Imperatives.

On the second day or our IEEE Board of Directors meeting we spent the morning in a discussion of our strategic plan for the next 5 years with EY Parthenon and Mckinley that began during our January BoD retreat in Jamaica. The photo below shows me posting some comments on suggestions for our strategic plan.

Posting suggestions for IEEE 5-year strategic plan

We have been spending a significant time during our BoD meetings for such strategic discussions to help us gain perspectives from all of the stakeholders in the IEEE and determine what we should have as aspirational goals for the next five years and what we should do over that time to achieve these goals.

June 2024 saw me in Europe and then Connecticut at the Region ½ meeting, then in Denver, in Santa Clara, CA and visiting the Eisenhower building next to the White House. I gave out several IEEE awards and worked with the IEEE board on creating a strategic plan for the next five year.

These migrants arrive with complex asylum claims and, because of bureaucratic and diplomatic obstacles, are among the most difficult to deport when they don’t qualify for protection. Many are released into the United States with a pending court date that may be years away .

Some migrants say they could be killed if sent home. Many risked their lives crossing oceans or jungles to reach the border in search of a better life. The legal basis for an asylum claim is a flight from persecution, not a yearning for American prosperity.

Immigration judges are churning out decisions at a record clip. Still, decisions about sensitive cases involving violence and persecution tend to take years. That means many of the new immigrants are living in a state of long-term limbo, even as they become more enmeshed in the fabric of American life.

Economists say the migrants have helped America’s post-covid economy to be one of the strongest in the world. But the United States remains tangled in a bitter debate over the costs and benefits of these new arrivals, which has been amplified by this year’s presidential campaign .

Biden tightened border restrictions to curb asylum claims after former president and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump rallied Republicans to defeat a bipartisan bill that would have expanded immigration enforcement . Trump blames Biden for inviting mass migration, and he is pledging to close the border and deploy U.S. troops to carry out deportations if he’s elected in November.

Where people have settled

Unlike the immigrants of the late 1800s and early 1900s who arrived at Ellis Island on transatlantic steam ships, the journey today often unfolds in two phases. One is the physical challenge of reaching U.S. territory. A second, longer odyssey follows in the U.S. immigration court system, which must sort out who is allowed to stay.

The Post’s analysis of U.S. immigration court data shows that about 3 million migrants who have arrived since 2014 have active cases. More than three in five have entered the United States since 2021, the year Biden took office.

Their legal status in America remains unresolved, but they are already building lives: many are taking low-wage jobs, sending children to school and relocating to communities across the United States that have not been traditional immigrant destinations.

Migrant arrivals since 2014, according to court data

nv travel group

Court filings show the newest immigrants are settling across rural and urban America. They and other arrivals have pushed the share of the U.S. population that is foreign-born to nearly 14 percent, the highest in more than a century. New immigrant hubs have formed around jobs in meatpacking , agriculture and petroleum.

Some of the biggest growth areas are in Florida and Texas, where the immigrant population continues to expand thanks to plentiful jobs and cheaper housing — and despite immigration crackdowns by Republican Govs. Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott .

The growth is uneven. West Virginia , Wyoming and North Dakota — states with severe labor shortages — attracted hardly any of the newcomers, while New York, Chicago and Denver have received thousands as Abbott has bused more from the border to those cities. California, a traditional destination, is also home to large numbers of new arrivals.

Immigrant hubs by nationality

Migrants have long chosen to settle with family and friends in the United States. Some arrive with a relative’s phone number scrawled on their hands. Many newer arrivals have few contacts, however, and end up in city shelters.

Guatemalans and Hondurans have been crossing the U.S. southern border for many years, fleeing violence, drought and hunger. Like the Mexican immigrants facing deportation, they are widely distributed across urban and rural areas, with fast-growing communities in western and southern U.S. states.

Venezuelans became a top group entering the United States for the first time under the Biden administration, a surge that has demonstrated how rapidly migration can change. New enclaves of Venezuelan migrants have formed in places such as Salt Lake City, Denver and Dallas. If Maduro extends his rule during next month’s election, he could trigger another mass exodus.

Migration from El Salvador has fallen in recent years under President Nayib Bukele , who has generated both accolades and criticism for an iron-fisted anti-gang campaign. El Salvador has gone from one of Latin America’s most dangerous countries to one of its safest, and far fewer Salvadorans are leaving.

Cuban migration to the United States has been at record levels due to the country’s tanking economy and long-standing U.S. penalties that tightened under Trump. Cubans enjoy special privileges under U.S. law, and roughly five percent of the island’s population has crossed into the United States since 2021. Louisville, Las Vegas and Houston are new destinations for Cubans, court filings show.

Turmoil in Haiti has sent more people fleeing — and made U.S. deportations to Haiti more controversial. Many of the Haitians who have surged to the United States have arrived from Chile or other South American nations where they found refuge after Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake. They risk deportation to a place they left years ago. Haitian communities in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Florida have expanded in recent years, the data show.

Immigration court cases have jumped for other Latin American nations, including Colombians, Brazilians, Peruvians and Ecuadorians , the latter fleeing new waves of drug-fueled gang violence . Those groups are concentrating in New York, Florida and the Midwest.

During the past two years, U.S. border authorities have apprehended more migrants from Africa and Asia than ever before. Guided by smuggling organizations, these groups often arrive to South America then head north to follow the dangerous Darién Gap jungle route between Colombia and Panama, eventually reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.

About 50,000 Chinese migrants have crossed into the United States along the Mexico border since 2023. Court data show many of the most recent migrants are settling in Queens or Los Angeles’s Monterey Park area. Migrants from India are streaming to California. Russians, many of whom say they’re fleeing the war on Ukraine and forced conscription, are going to New York, Sacramento and Los Angeles.

About this story

The Washington Post used immigration court case data through May 2024 released by the Justice Department. Reporters limited their analysis to cases with entry dates since the start of 2014, omitting all cases missing entry dates. Although migrants may have multiple cases of entry over the decade, each person is only counted once. And although the overall analysis figures include detainees currently in government custody, the maps of where migrants have settled do not.

The data does not specify how every migrant entered the United States, but an analysis of charges and reporting on the topic revealed that most migrants entered through the southern border of the United States.

The Justice Department agency that runs the immigration courts, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, started releasing the data monthly to the public after receiving requests from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which publishes the information.
