Hebbe Falls Chikmagalur Timings

One of nature's most enchanting waterfalls amongst the 35 waterfalls of Karnataka, Hebbe Falls is situated about 10 km away from the famous hill station Kemmangundi in Chikmagalur town in Karnataka, India. The waterfalls gushes down from a height of 551 ft in two stages to form Dodda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe meaning Big Falls and Small falls respectively. The majestic falls are located inside a coffee estate and can be reached either by a walk or via a four-wheeler.

Hebbe Falls is one of the most sought after destinations in Chikmagalur that attracts nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Professional trekkers start their trek from Tarikere that takes them an entire day to reach Kemmanagundi covering a distance of 35 km. This trail is considered as a trekkers paradise as it covers exotic coffee estates, rich flora and fauna on its way.

For a shorter trek one can reach the forest check post, and walk from the Karnataka Horticulture Department guest house which is 10 km away from the waterfalls. One can enjoy nature’s beauty by trekking to the waterfalls. However, caution must be exercised while walking as the place is filled with leeches, especially in the rainy season when their number grows exponentially.

The trekking route is home to a pond and three enchanting streams as well as Chowdeshwari Mahashakthi Devathe temple where locals offer their prayers and take a dip in the nearby stream. Few nature lovers take the risk of trekking during monsoons to watch herds of elephants that throng the place.

For not so adventurous tourists, the alternative option is to take a government approved forest jeep which goes through private estates. It takes an hour to cover the trail in a jeep while walking takes longer time. However, the last kilometer starting from Khoday's Estate needs to be trekked in order to reach the falls. Jeeps charge around Rs. 3200 per jeep for a group of 6 to 8 people starting from Kemmangundi.

Along the way, one can witness scenic wonders enthralling the nature lovers. The ride through the narrow and steep path to reach the falls is worth the effort as one can hear the sounds of splashing water from a distance, heightening your sense of suspense and excitement. It is the perfect location to unwind and distress.

One of the exquisite features of these falls is that the water is infused with medicinal herbs offering healing qualities. It is like a natural jacuzzi with exotic herbs mixed into the water. So take a dip in these healthy waters and feel the difference. During the monsoon, the waterfall becomes voluminous and makes thunderous sounds that can be heard from afar. Apart from being one of the most picturesque tourist attractions in South India, the medicinal herbs also attract biologists and scientists.

Hebbe Falls

by Steps Together · Published August 18, 2021 · Updated August 31, 2021

Hebbe falls is one of the few waterfalls in Karnataka where journey to reach the waterfalls is as interesting and exciting as the majestic waterfalls. Located in the lush green surrounds of Bhadra wildlife sanctuary , extremely bumpy jeep ride to reach the waterfalls makes it more memorable.

hebbe falls trek

After an adventurous trek to Kemmangundi , we still had plenty of time to explore around. We had to checkout from the Joe’s Home stay and breakfast was a must for us hungry souls. After having mandatory leech check, we returned to home stay. After freshening up had quick breakfast there and checked out from the home stay at 2 PM. We took the same route that we traveled for Z Point in the morning. Before reaching the Kemmangundi parking area, you can see the parking for Hebbe Falls at one of the U turn curve.

Hebbe Falls Parking

Best route to Hebbe Falls

Adventurous jeep ride to hebbe falls.

One needs to hire a jeep from the parking lot. They charged 4000 Rs for 10 of us (for both to and fro, 400 Rs/person). It is a fixed price and can’t be bargained. The bumpy road starts at the beginning itself and continues like this throughout the 13km stretch. The jeep drivers are extremely skillful and they seem like they have tamed those rough and tough roads. We didnt forget to look outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery even though we were totally cramped up inside the jeep. The view throughout the ride is blissful. 13 km jeep ride was completed in about 30 mins and the driver showed us the route to Hebbe Falls.

Hebbe Falls Route

Walk trail to Hebbe falls

As there were many tourists, the driver did not come along to guide us to the falls. We have seen few drivers coming along with the tourists and helping with the route. There is a proper trail that leads to the falls but signboards are missing. If there are no one around, then there are minimal chances of getting lost.

Walk trail to Hebbe falls

We followed the fellow travelers and headed towards Hebbe Falls. The route is a beautiful stretch through the not-so-dense forest. The weather was very pleasant and luckily, there were no leaches. Though it was a bit slippery in some places, but was manageable. There are river crossings in three places. Since there was not much water, it was easy to cross. Ropes are tied across the river for support. So, there is no danger involved in this crossing. As we were approaching the falls, we heard the gushing sound of it, which pumped our excitement.

Walk trail to Hebbe falls

Hebbe falls

The first glimpse of it was a moment to cherish. The Hebbe Falls was falling down from a height of a whopping 551 ft forming two stages Dodda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe. As there was more water in the falls, none was there below the falls. However, many tourists enjoyed the falls as it started flowing on the ground. It was wonderful to see the gigantic falls from a close distance. The surrounding forest, the falls, and the water stream formed out of it gave us the perfect ending for our trip.

Hebbe Falls

After spending some time near the falls, we returned to the parking lot via the same route and took the jeep ride back to the Falls entrance gate. We started to Bangalore from there at about 5 pm. and came on the same route that we took yesterday. We had our dinner at the hotel in Hassan and reached home at 12.30 PM.

This was around 8 – 9 years back. Now the route is changed and you hardly get 3kms jeep ride. You won’t even get any river streams to cross, just need to walk few meters on a muddy road. This is the old route which you are showing, and it was very very awesome.

Well that’s strange. We went for this trip around 2.5 years ago.🤔

Well, Kemmangundi is not a place like where you get down; trek to some places and return to catch the bus to Bangalore. Dear Amar, We are planning a trip to Kemmanagudi. We are a group of 4, including 2 women. Can you please with the below queries. Tried everywhere but could not get answers to these questions..shall be very gratefull: 1. We plan to drive from Bangalore to this place in a hatchback car and camp (pitch up tents) at Z point. Is this safe..since have 2 girls with us. If not, where do you suggest to camp. We can hike 3km to z point and come back but is there a place where we can camp before the z point trail starts? 2. Where can i park my car safely. It would be great if you can help answer and advice and btw, loved your blog, very detailed.

Regards Sanjay

On the way to Z-point trek, there are a lot of spaces where you can pitch your tent. There are waterfalls (Small stream of water) on the way but they run in monsoon. I am not sure of them during this time. You can search on google maps for Shanti falls. Just for your information, the terrain will be rough but still okay to pitch the tent. The wind may also be high because of the open slope of the hill. I am not sure of the car safety but it should be fine. But there another park near the base of the trek called Kemmannagundi Krishnarajendra Park where I think parking the car should be fine.

I have not ever camped there but I think this information should be enough to help you.

DIY Hiking Guide To Z-Point & Shanti Fall, Kemmangundi

Spread the Word!

A second visit to Z Point and Shanti Falls left us truly gaping. This time we embarked during a different season and experienced an entirely different landscape. Time and seasonal changes did little to mar the beauty of the place but the chipping of time remained visible.

The view of mountains on one side and the view of plains on the other side with a never-ending ridge line makes Z-point exquisitely unique and a ‘do-not-miss-place’ when you visit Chikmagalur.

Unlike the name, Z-point is not a single summit point; rather, a long ridge line where you can relax at different places on the hilltop. Shanti Falls is located en route on your hike to the Z-point in Kemmangundi.

As Z-point and Shanti Falls have attracted crowds over the years for their beauty and landscape, terrain improvements have also been made by the government in the region to encourage tourists and travelers. This guide will help you with every piece of information you might need to ensure you make the most of your visit to Shanti Waterfall and Z-Point on your trip.

Z-Point Hiking Guide

Table of Contents

How To Reach Z-point From Chikmagalur?

There are no direct buses to reach Kemmangundi or Z-point from Chikmagalur. You can board a bus to Lingadahalli and then to Kemmangundi but note that the buses are not frequent.

The best way to reach Z-point is by using personal transport. You can also rent two-wheelers or hire a jeep from Chikmagalur city daily. The choice of personal transport is dependent on the number of people you are planning to go with.

As mobile networks don’t work in this area, we recommend you download offline maps or start navigating from your stay. Search in Google Maps for “ Z point entrance rock garden ”. You will lose your signal midway, however, it is a straight route to the gate. We encourage you to get help from locals if you happen to face any difficulty in finding the route.

Although two-wheelers were allowed just 100 m before the Shanti fall, cars were denied entry beyond the gate.

Network Availability

No cellular reception could be found among all the network operators including generally reliable ones like Airtel and Jio.

ATM Availability

No ATMs could be found at the place. The nearest ATMs are only available in Chikmagalur town. On your trip to the Kemmangundi side, carry sufficient cash, at least 1K per person (Rs. 500 for your jeep ride to Hebbe Falls which is situated nearby).

Please note that UPI and other digital payments cannot be done as the signal is extremely weak at best.

Languages Spoken

The regional language of Kannada is the only language spoken by the people in the region.

Parking Availability

In the radius of the front gate of the Z Point is a No Parking Zone. You will be directed to the nearest parking point by a watch person standing in front of the gate who controls the parking of vehicles, and entry and exit timings.

Although he redirects you to park uphill near the Kemmangundi sunset point and park, we recommend you choose the nearest parking lot that is on the side of the road near the sit-out.

Please be aware that there is an operational toll between Hebbe Falls and Z Point where Rs. 50 is charged for two-wheelers, Rs. 10 for walking, and more for other vehicles.

Restroom Facilities

There is no restroom near the Z-point entry gate. But clean, well-maintained, and paid restrooms (Rs. 5) are available near the Kemmangundi Sunset Point and Hebbe Falls which are nearby.

Best Time To Visit

View of z-point along the ridge line

Although Shanti fall is in full force during the monsoon months of July and August. However, these months form dense mist at altitudes allowing a very little window of time to view the scenery from the Z-point.

The best time to visit Z-point is during the post-monsoon months between September and January. This is the perfect time when you get to see the mesmerizing mountain ranges in all their glory, completely littered with different shades of green creating a view of a lifetime.

Where To Stay?

The nearest safe accommodation is the Kemmannugundi Hill Resort which is maintained by the government of Karnataka. They also offer jeep packages starting at Rs.5000 per day.

The most wallet-friendly option would be to choose your stay in Chikmagalur City and take day trips to Kemmangundi and nearby places.

Where To Eat?

Near the Kemmannugundi hill resort, there is only one restaurant and snack shop. Here you can have tea or coffee. There are no other shops or vendors in this place.

Things To Do In Z-point

Hiking is the most popular activity in Z-point. A nature walk to the Shanti waterfall is a highly recommended activity for adults and children.

Walk straight past the play area for about 1.5 Km. The route has no shortage of lush greenery, made ever more refreshing with tall trees. You will also be skipping across small streams en route if you hike during the monsoon months.

Narrow path near the Shanti waterfall

When the route narrows down, the roar of the Shanti waterfall continues to crescendo. You will be at the site after walking about 100 steps.

Shanti falls, Kemmangundi

Do not miss tasting the water. The falls is essentially a freshwater spring and as a result, it is the purest and tastiest you’ll ever drink.

Right after crossing the waterfall, you can see a steep uphill route on your right.

Z-point hiking route - steep uphill climb

This is a tricky yet short route. After hiking for about 10 minutes past the boulders, it is an easy hike to the top. Or you can ignore that route to take the left and walk for a few more meters. Climbing up either path will lead you to the top, it is just a matter of experience.

Be very careful during the rains, as the terrain tends to get slippery. Do not roam on the far-off edges, or attempt to create insta moments. Safety should always be your priority. Safety ensures you continue to experience spellbound places such as this.

Z-point easy path to the peak

Multiple uphill routes will lead you to the top. Choose whichever is easier for you.

Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate, highly contingent on your level of fitness.

Terrain: Stones, rocks, and boulders. The muddy paths are slippery during the rainy and monsoon seasons.

At The Z-point Summit:

So, make sure you’re well aware of your surroundings before you attempt anything. Ethina Bhuja Trek is a lesser-known trail sitting amidst western ghats near Dharmastala temple. The peak of this mighty mountain resembles the shoulders of an ox, hence it is called “ Ethina Bhuja” which means “ox shoulders” in local language Kannada. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful and adventurous trekking destinations across Chikmagalur to have me-time with nature. However, you will hardly find anyone, as this is hidden and unknown to the masses.

Besides this, the whole view of lush green valley, small streams, ghats, and clouds that pass all over you is something not to be missed.

You can even camp overnight on the hilltop and homestays will help you out with this. There is a flat land just 50 m below the peak where you can set up a tent and bonfire. Furthermore, you can even carry small portables stoves if you are fond of cooking.

Note: Be careful about the mighty tuskers and wild pigs that inhabit in the nearby vicinity.
