Father, son reunite restoring Yanks motorcycle

Teutuls from tv's 'american chopper' end estrangement while refurbishing bombers bike.

Paul Teutul Jr. hadn't spoken with his father, Paul Sr., for about a decade. But when the opportunity presented itself for the pair to join forces again to restore a special bike they had once built together, it was too good to pass up. The two stars of Discovery Channel's "American Chopper" will unveil the Yankees-themed chopper on Monday night's episode (10 p.m. ET), aptly titled, "Yanks for the Memories." The unveiling was taped recently at the MLB Network studios, where the father-son duo was joined by Kevin Millar, Chris Rose, Harold Reynolds, Eric Byrnes and Sean Casey for the big reveal. The bike was originally built by the Teutuls in 2005 at the request of Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and his wife, Laura, who planned to auction it off at their foundation's annual fundraising event. After completing the project, Paul Sr. wound up buying the bike at the auction to support Posada and his foundation. "He had it for about 12 years and sold it," Paul Jr. said. "Whoever bought it, my suspicion is, somewhere along the line, someone intentionally destroyed it for -- and this is speculative -- maybe insurance money. "Me and my father were just starting to talk a little bit after 10 years of being at odds, and I was looking for a project to do with him. This guy calls up and says, 'I got this Yankees bike from a salvage auction, and I want you to build parts for the bike.' I ended up making a deal with him to buy the bike with the idea in mind that it would be a great project for me and my father." The two worked on the bike for about six months, restoring and refurbishing it while making some changes to modernize it. More importantly, the project served as a path for the father and son to move past their differences and re-establish a relationship. "We really hadn't spoken much in probably 10 years," Paul Sr. said. "We were doing [Season 11] and they suggested that we work on this bike together. Our relationship started to grow a little bit from there; we're both a little bit older and hopefully a little bit wiser. We continued to work on it, and we both realized that life is moving on and it's too short. We're probably better together than apart." Season 11's eight-episode run has featured the two men -- who each run their own successful businesses -- building bikes for their respective clients, weaved with the restoration of the Yankees bike. The Yankees bike had been mostly blue and silver in its original form, but Paul Jr. decided to give the updated version a distinct look. "We made the creative decision to put all new sheet metal on because it was destroyed," Paul Jr. said. "A lot of the parts on the bike are original to give it a nostalgic feel, but because this bike has been such a big part of getting me and my father back together, I wanted to give it a home-team paint job. We put pinstripes on the frame and on the tank; we really made it feel like a Yankees home uniform." As they neared completion of the project, the Teutuls brought it to an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of David Wells' perfect game, where a number of former Yankees including Wells, Joe Torre, David Cone, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams and Willie Randolph all signed the bike. Williams even made a visit to Paul Jr.'s shop to help put the finishing touches on the bike. The Teutuls brought the bike to MLB Network's Studio 42 for the big unveiling, which was well received by everyone in attendance.

"I'm not a huge bike guy, but Kevin is," Rose said. "For me, when they took the drape off of that thing, I was like, 'Holy smokes!' I can't believe that people could build something like that." Millar could hardly contain himself after getting a glance at the massive machine. "The bike itself is the coolest thing you're going to see; the detail, it's like a Yankee uniform on metal," Millar said. "Even for a Red Sox guy -- and we've had some massive rivalries and fights on the field -- when you see the motorcycle version, the chopper version of awesomeness, I'm in. It almost made me a Yankees fan." It was easy for Millar to marvel at the bike, but Reynolds -- who has never ridden a motorcycle in his life -- was also in awe after seeing it for the first time. "I'm not a motorcycle guy, but it's easy to appreciate greatness," Reynolds said. "The first time I saw it, it was unbelievable. The detail, it's like when you walk into an art gallery and you think, 'This isn't my kid's painting.' It's next level." Baseball has bonded fathers and sons for generations. In a roundabout way, the sport helped bring the Teutuls back together after nearly a decade apart. "I never really thought of it that way," Paul Sr. said. "I guess that's true." "I thought the coolest part was Paul Jr. and Paul Sr. talking about how it rekindled their love for one another and their relationship," Rose said. "Call me a sap; I don't care what it is that brings families together, that's pretty cool."

Patti at Yankee Clipper Travel in Napa has provided outstanding service on the cruise that corona virus cancelled! From the first contact, when we told her what we wanted but that it was sold out, Patti went above and beyond ON OUR BEHALF. Patti snagged us the one remaining stateroom, handled all the arrangements, provided options for trip insurance and kept us fully informed along the way. Then when the pandemic hit, She handled the entire cancellation process and had our deposit (less $200) returned within two days. Now, today, she informed us that we will receive a $200 credit for a future cruise and the entire travel insurance premium will be put on hold for a future trip anytime prior to September 2021! Neither of which I expected. Patti was invaluable in booking our trip but her service was even more essential and appreciated when things turned bad. Art and Kathleen

I have just gotten back from an awesome Caribbean Cruise that I worked with Kirk at Yankee Clipper Travel to plan the trip. I have worked with him for my travel needs for many years and am always extremely pleased. He is always willing to go the extra mile and makes sure every detail is perfect. I have used him for both simple weekend getaways to major trips to Egypt, the South Pacific and many cruises around the world. He is a gem to work with and I can say he is one of the most professional agents I have ever met. I used to be in the travel industry for many years and Kirk understands great customer service!

Umm, really?????? Just heard back today regarding planning my trip. Mind you, I sent a follow-up on 12/1 and it is now 1/7. If there were issues or technical problems planning my itinerary, I should have been notified long before today.

Due to all of the great reviews, I decided to check this agency out for a trip I'm planning to Paris in 2015. I called and spoke with Kirk. He was friendly and knowledgeable. He told me what info I should send him so he could give me an initial overview of the trip. After my initial e-mail, he sent a quick response saying he would check into this that day. Sadly, after that I didn't hear anything back at all. It's been over a month from my follow-up email now and nada. No response regarding status. Totally in the dark and have no clue what's going on. Had high hopes, but they've been dashed. Will be using another mode to plan my trip.

Kirk at Yankee Clipper Travel planned a trip for us that was absolutely tremendous. I dropped in on Kirk on a rainy Saturday afternoon in December, and said, "I want to take my husband someplace special for his birthday!" I had been thinking maybe a cruise to Cuba, or a trip to Hawaii, but I couldn't seem to figure it out on my own. I gave Kirk my budget and he diligently looked at cruise itineraries, but he couldn't find something that seemed quite right in terms of a cruise. He gently suggested Tahiti. Tahiti hadn't occurred to me. What a great idea - and as we enjoyed a cocktail on the deck of our over-the-water bungalow, my husband said, "This has been the best vacation ever." Kirk stayed within my budgetary parameters. He made certain all our connections were smooth. He knows Tahiti, so he made the right call in sending us to Moorea. This particular island is tranquil and sublime. Kirk really made certain that this was the birthday of a lifetime.

Patti Ihli, travel agent, helped guide me through my ambiguous desire to take my husband to Cuba to defining what sort of experiences I would like to have there. She found Cultural Island Travel (who I plan to review on Trip Advisor). Patti coordinated communication between them-us, and my brother and sister-in-law. The four of us had a lovely, somewhat customized, people to people tour. I was very happy with the whole thing. Patti is a valuable resource for Napa and San Francisco.

I had a similar experience to another person who had a negative experience with travel agent K and gave a one star review. A good friend who has booked a number of trips with K spoke highly of him and convinced me to contact him. Well after I sent emails (one regarding a trip to Costa Rica and another to Barcelona) all I received was one very quick email response (no more than "I will check and get back to you"). More than 2 months later, still no response. My friend inquired about this so I finally get an email back from K (3 months later) stating to call him so we can discuss my trip. I hesitated due to the cold, limited email response I got initially but thought, why not give it another chance. So I ended up calling. K answers phone and says "I'll call you in 5 minutes after I finish with these customers". Well it's been several hours and no response. So he must be very busy and doesn't need my business. "oh well". At least have some courtesy and show respect to the customers. I will take my business elsewhere and these were two big trips for 4 people.

I couldn't be more satisfied with my experience with Rosie and Yankee Clipper Travel. She was very patient with my wife and I being as indecisive as we were. We were looking for the perfect balance of secluded, close to everything as well as fitting into our budget. We were looking for a honeymoon destination and settled on St. Martin. It was fantastic and we have Rosie to thank. One suggestion she gave us made all the difference during our stay: a rental car. I can't say we would've left the immediate surroundings of our hotel if we didn't have one. Thank you Rosie!

Yankee Clipper Travel superstar (and super nice!) agent Kirk continues to amaze. We just returned from a trip to Australia he arranged for us and another couple, and we couldn't be happier with the results. 3 locations in 9 days - including planes, trains and boats - and not a glitch in sight. He really listened and helped us select just the right excursions and tours. This is the third international trip Kirk handled for us (along with many domestic vacations), and we look forward to the next one. THANK YOU Kirk and Yankee Clipper Travel! We love you...

We used Yankee Clipper a second time to plan another trip to Maui for us. It was nice having a travel agent personally help us find just the right condo. The travel arrangements (flights, car) all went off without a hitch. I appreciated having a personal touch, and got some great recommendations for places to eat and sights to see. Highly recommended.

I recently used Kirk at Yankee Clipper to help us plan a trip to Maui with my boyfriend. I couldn't be more pleased. Kirk found us a hotel that suited us perfectly, with a nice view and a little beach. His personal knowledge of the area we stayed in was helpful since it was my first time in Maui. My name is Charlie Weisel (pronounced Wisel, not Weasel!), 43, a self-employed electrician by trade but recently (as in very, very recently) retired from that.  Landlord…not to be confused with a slumlord. Chopper enthusiast to the core but not one to look down my nose at any motorcycle, literally.

• Remember that you are capable of far more than you think.
• Take it slow. Motorcycling is not about proving who’s fastest or more skilled, it’s about enjoying the ride.
• Figure out what kind of rider you are and harness that. i.e. long-distance tourer, bop around towner, long weekender, etc.
