Travel Glossary

Accommodation: The place where you’ll stay during your trip — your home away from home. This can range from a snazzy hotel suite to a bunk bed in a buzzing hostel.

Adventure Travel: Exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations and experiencing adrenaline-pumping activities. The type of travel for those who prefer hiking boots over flip-flops.

Airline Alliance: A partnership among airlines to provide passengers with extended networks, smoother connections, and often, better perks. Like a friendship bracelet, but for airlines.

Airport Code: The three-letter identity tag for airports around the globe, making booking flights and navigating airports simpler. Think of it as the airport’s nickname.

Airport Terminal: The specific area in an airport where you check-in, pass security, and board or disembark your flight. It’s the traveller’s hub within the travel hub.

Backpacker: A traveller known for carrying their life in a backpack, seeking immersive experiences, and often on a budget. Backpackers are known to be part wizard, part ninja, with their ability to pack light yet still have everything they need.

Broke Backpacker: A backpacker traveling the world on a tight budget, often hitchhiking, Couchsurfing and cooking their own food whilst camping out under starry nights. Broke Backpackers are resilient, kind-hearted and always find a way to hustle and make ends meet.

Begpacker: Someone who funds their journey by begging for money in the countries they visit. Not exactly the hero of our travel tales.

Bikepacking : Backpacking by way of bicycle. Travellers pack their things onto a luggage rack and cycle around — sometimes for weeks, and sometimes indefinitely.

Boarding Pass: Your golden ticket to board a plane. For some, a travel collectible of sorts; for others, a paper quickly forgotten in the seat pocket.

Budget Travel: Stretching every little bit of your hard-earned cash as far as it can take you — and seeing the world without breaking the bank. That is what a Broke Backpacker does, baby!

Business Class: A step up from Economy Class, usually with wider seats and better meals. A taste of the high life, often experienced courtesy of points or special offers.

Busking : The art of funding one’s travels (or saving for them) by performing in a public place in exchange for tips. Usually connected to street musicians.

Carry-On Baggage: The essentials you can take with you on the plane. Packing it is something many consider an art, fitting everything a close second to magic.

Checked Baggage: The luggage you trust the airline to transport in the belly of the plane. Also commonly referred to as a “test of faith” amongst the community.

Codeshare: An agreement between airlines where a flight is operated by one but marketed by another. Say you call your mate to take you on a ride, but he shows up in his neighbour’s car… sort of like that.

Couchsurfing: Staying with a host for free, usually sleeping on their couch or spare bed. A powerful tool in a Broke Backpacker’s arsenal, and a term made popular by the Couchsurfing travel app .

Customs and Immigration : The checkpoint at international borders where officials check your documents and luggage. It’s the final boss battle before entering a new country.

Digital Nomad: An individual who works remotely from different parts of the world, often in cafes, co-working spaces, or beach bars. They’ve mastered the art of making anywhere an office.

Domestic Travel: Travelling within your own country, aka something we should all do more often. Our backyard is right there, and it is probably hiding a shit ton of gold.

Eco Tourism: A type of travel focused on conservation, supporting local communities, and minimizing impact on the environment. Often associated with volunteering projects , but not exclusively.

Economy Class: The most common and budget-friendly travel class. Broke Backpackers rarely know any other, really.

Fare Alert: A notification service that alerts you to the best flight deals. Like having a personal scout for travel bargains.

First Class: The epitome of luxury in the sky, with gourmet meals and lie-flat seats. A rare gem for budget travellers, usually only spotted in daydreams.

Gap Year: A year of travel, often taken by students as a break between high school and college, but increasingly popular with adults seeking a career break or life reset.

Ghost Fares: Listed flight deals that vanish when you try to book them. Like chasing a mirage in the desert of internet deals.

Glitch Fare: An error in listing the price of a flight, often ridiculously low. This is what we live for, amigos!

Guest House: A cozy, home-like accommodation option, often run by locals. It’s where you get the warmth of home, without all the boring chores.

Haggling : A type of bargaining for the lowest possible price that tends to be the default way of shopping in many parts of the world, particularly when goods are not sold for fixed amounts.

High Season: The peak travel period with the highest demand and prices. It’s when everyone else has the same travel idea as you.

Hitchhiking: The art of catching free rides with passing vehicles, usually by sticking your thumb out on the side of the road. It’s a gamble of patience and luck, with stories for a lifetime.

Homestay: Staying with a local family, experiencing their way of life. Be a guest, not a tourist.

Hostel: Budget-friendly accommodations, often with shared rooms and communal spaces. A good hostel is a home, and one where stories and friendships are as plentiful as bunk beds.

Hub Airport : A major airport that serves as a central point for connecting flights. Think London, Dubai, Singapore… the grand central stations of the skies.

Layover: The waiting period between connecting flights. An unscheduled mini-adventure, some would say.

Legroom: The space available for your legs on a flight. Often feels like a luxury in economy class.

Long-Haul Flight: A flight covering a long distance, usually over six hours. On long-haul flights, time truly becomes an illusion, and time zones mere suggestions. Reality is not the same anymore.

Low Season: The travel period outside of peak times, offering fewer crowds and often better deals. It’s the introvert’s prime time to travel.

Low-Cost Carrier: Airlines that offer no-frills flights at lower prices. They’re the unsung heroes for budget travellers. If you’re based in Europe, I’m sure you’re familiar with Ryanair and their crazy deals .

Money Belt : A sleek, secret weapon that expertly hides your cash inside of an inconspicuous-looking belt. Money belts are top-tier backpacker safety tools.

Off Season: Similar to Low Season, a time when travel is less in demand. It’s when destinations breathe a sigh of relief and welcome you with open arms and cheaper prices.

Off-The-Beaten-Path Travel: Exploring places that are not on the typical tourist radar. It’s for those who view the road less travelled as a personal invitation or a challenge.

One-Way Flight: A flight not returning to the origin point. One could say that’s exactly the kind of ticket you should be booking… but that’s just me. 😉

Overbooking: When airlines sell more tickets than there are seats. The airline industry’s version of musical chairs.

Overland Travel: Travelling across land, often through multiple countries, by bus, train, or car. Overland travel is the scenic route to adventure and there’s little that can beat it.

Package Tour: A pre-arranged travel package including flights, accommodation, and sometimes meals and tours. Travel on easy mode!

Packing List: The checklist of essentials for your trip. You can look at it as the line between “I have everything” and “I forgot my toothbrush.”

Peak Season: The busiest travel season, with the highest demand. When your favourite spots become everyone’s favourite spots.

Responsible Tourism: Travel that minimizes negative impacts on the environment and local communities. The idea is that you ALWAYS leave places better than you found them.

Revenge Travel: The surge in travel after periods of restrictions or lockdowns, like what we experienced after the decade-year of 2020. The world’s comeback tour is on!

Rural Tourism: Exploring the countryside, away from the city hustle, and finding beauty in the serene and the simplest of things.

Shoulder Season: The sweet spot between peak and off-peak seasons, offering a balance of good weather and lower prices. It’s the savvy traveller’s dream season.

Sleep System : Core essentials of any broke backpacker’s tool kit that allow one to sleep anywhere . We’re talking sleeping mat, sleeping bag, and pillow type of setup, but not all systems are built equal!

Solo Travel: The art of travelling alone, discovering the world, and perhaps a bit of yourself along the way. It’s where independence meets adventure.

Souvenir: A memento from your travels, ranging from the classic fridge magnet to the more eclectic and exotic goods. Some more entrepreneurial travellers even manage to turn it into a business .

Sticky Place: A destination that feels so right you have no choice but to stay. You’ve booked a couple of nights, but you’ve been there for at least a couple of weeks.

Visa Waiver: An agreement allowing travellers to visit a country without a visa for a short period. It’s the travel equivalent of a hall pass.

Wild Camping: Setting up camp in unmarked spots in the wilderness. It’s about as close to nature as you can get without becoming a bear.

Work Exchange: Volunteering your time in exchange for food, accommodation, or experience. The barter system meets backpacking.

World Heritage Area/Site: Locations recognized for their cultural, historical, or scientific significance. It’s the world’s way of saying, “This place is awesome.”

Xenophilia: A love for foreign cultures. The heart of every true traveller.

Air travel is getting worse. That’s what passengers are telling the US government

WASHINGTON (AP) — Air travel got more miserable last year, if the number of consumer complaints filed with the U.S. government is any measure.

The Transportation Department said Friday that it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the year before. The department said there were so many complaints that it took until July to sort through the filings and compile the figures.

That’s the highest number of consumer complaints about airlines since 2020, when airlines were slow to give customers refunds after the coronavirus pandemic shut down air travel.

The increase in complaints came even as airlines canceled far fewer U.S. flights — 116,700, or 1.2% of the total, last year, compared with about 210,500, or 2.3%, in 2022 , according to FlightAware data. However, delays remained stubbornly high last year, at around 21% of all flights.

So far this year, cancellations remain relatively low — about 1.3% of all flights — but delays are still running around 21%.

More than two-thirds of all complaints last year dealt with U.S. airlines , but a quarter covered foreign airlines. Most of the rest were about travel agents and tour operators.

Complaints about treating passengers with disabilities rose by more than one-fourth compared with 2022. Complaints of discrimination, while small in number, also rose sharply. Most were about race or national origin.

The Transportation Department said the increase in complaints was partly the result of more consumers knowing about their rights and the ability to file a complaint. The department said it helped Southwest Airlines customers get more than $600 million in refunds and reimbursements after the carrier canceled nearly 17,000 flights during December 2022. Southwest also paid a $35 million fine .

Airlines receive many more complaints from travelers who don’t know how or don’t bother to complain to the government, but the carriers don’t release those numbers.

The Transportation Department is modernizing its complaint-taking system, which the agency says will help it do a better job overseeing the airline industry. However, the department now releases complaint numbers many months late. It did not issue figures for the second half of 2023 until Friday.

Why are protesters squirting water at tourists in Barcelona?

Those hoping for a peaceful getaway in Barcelona were met instead with water guns, as furious locals protested against mass tourism.

Thousands have been demonstrating against the influx of tourists to the Spanish town, by squirting diners in popular areas with water pistols and chanting ‘go home’.

Spanish civilians have become fed up with the lack of affordable housing in their cities, resulting in the mayor of Barcelona pledging to eliminate short-term tourist lettings within five years.

The drastic move is in response to rising rents in the city, meaning that locals are struggling to afford to find anywhere to live.

Last year,  15.6 million tourists  headed to Barcelona, one of the world’s most vibrant beach cities.

Rents in Barcelona have surged 68% in the past 10 years, while the cost of buying a house rose by 38%.

The result? Infuriated locals, who are now protesting en masse in some of the most popular tourist areas in Spain.

It’s not just Barcelona which is witnessing anti-tourism protests. Mallorca locals blocked an Instagram-famous beach and chanted ‘tourists go home’ last month.

A movement against ‘overtourism’ has been ongoing in Barcelona since 2018, and just this March riot police and protesters – chanting ‘Barcelona is not for sale’ -clashed.

One man was handcuffed by after punching an officer who also appeared to have earlier struck him and a woman with a baton.

Protesters also took to the streets of the Greek capital in May, spraying graffiti against holidaymakers.

But tourism in Spain brings in roughly 15% of the country’s GDP, reaching an all-time high in August 2023.

It may be a money-making machine – short term rentals, tourist traps in the city – but locals have had enough.

2,800 people joined the march in Barcelona this weekend against over tourism and housing issues.

‘Barcelona is not for sale’ and ‘Tourists go home’ were popular chants.

Resident Isa Miralles told Reuters: ‘Local shops are closing to make way for stores that do not serve the needs of neighbourhoods. People cannot afford their rents.’

Critics of the protests have said they are ‘short sighted and counterproductive’.

The deal with OLC, which owns and operates Tokyo Disney Resort, calls for a sister ship to Disney Wish to be constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany for sailing expected to begin in early 2029.

While technically the yet-to-be-named ship will be the ninth vessel in the DCL fleet, it’s OLC that has entered into the construction contract, and will operate the vessel under a licensing agreement with Disney.

It would be the fourth Wish-class ship for the DCL fleet following 2022’s Wish, this year’s Disney Treasure and next year’s Disney Destiny. Wish will be joined by Treasure later this year with both sailing out of Port Canaveral while Destiny’s home port has yet to be announced.

New cruise ship Disney Treasure gets 1st taste of water

Disney is also set to welcome in 2025 the Disney Adventure, which is headed to Singapore.

The Japan deal expands on a relationship between Disney and OLC that is more than 40 years old. Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983 and OLC also operates the ocean-themed Tokyo DisneySea, which opened in 2001. Both theme parks falling within Tokyo Disney Resort, which has like Walt Disney World has its own monorail, entertainment and dining complex and hotels.

“Disney Cruise Line has ambitious plans to bring family vacations and Disney storytelling to more guests around the world than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, in a press release. “We are thrilled to continue the success of this expansion as we collaborate with Oriental Land Co. to introduce another distinctly Disney vacation experience to families and fans in Japan.”

The ship will be operated by OLC and be registered in Japan.

The Wish class are slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Fantasy with about 1,250 staterooms and a 4,000-guest capacity including children. The release noted the ship will feature many guest-favorite venues and experiences that can be found on Disney Wish “with select modifications specially designed with Japanese guests in mind.”

Disney Wish features the AquaMouse water coaster that is part dark ride, part tube run, a Marvel-themed restaurant and dinner theater venue themed to “Frozen.”

“I am sincerely proud that Disney and Oriental Land will be able to work together to create a world-class cruise business in Japan,” said Yumiko Takano, representative director, chairperson and CEO, Oriental Land. “Oriental Land will use their knowhow from the theme park business to continue pushing boundaries and provide family entertainment cruise experiences filled with inspiration and surprise.”

Disney’s first ship Disney Magic debuted in 1998 followed by sister ship Disney Wonder in 1999. Dream and Fantasy doubled the fleet with their debuts in 2011 and 2012 before the recent rapid expansion to double the fleet again with four new ships from 2022-2025.

The line also created a second Florida year-round home port taking over a cruise terminal at Port Everglades and this summer debuted its new Bahamas private destination Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Joy as air stewardess facing Dubai jail after being 'attacked' finally comes home

Irish flight attendant Tori Towey is now home after having a travel ban imposed on her by authorities in the United Arab Emirates after she was allegedly a victim of domestic violence

A group working to free an air stewardess from 'jail hell' in Dubai say they are overjoyed she is home.

Tori Towey was accused of breaking strict laws in the country, despite being the victim of an alleged assault. It led to a travel ban being imposed on her by the strict regime in the United Arab Emirates.

But the 28-year-old from Co Roscommon had the ban lifted on Wednesday after the Irish government’s intervention. She has now arrived back in Ireland, according to Detained in Dubai group which represented her.

Radha Stirling, of the campaigning group, had been speaking on Ms Towey’s behalf, posted on social media the good news on social media on Thursday morning. She wrote on social networking channel 'X': “She’s home”.

Earlier The Mirror reported how Irish premier Simon Harris said a travel ban imposed by Dubai authorities on Ms Towey has been lifted and she was to be taken to the airport as “soon as she was ready to go”. Tori, who was charged with attempted suicide and alcohol abuse after the attack, said she felt “overwhelmed” by the amount of support she received since news emerged she was being held by Dubai authorities.

Mr Harris previously told the Irish Parliament: "no effort would be spared" to get Ms Towey home. He said: “I've just been informed the travel ban has been lifted, the embassy will take Tori to the airport as soon as she is ready to go, and that embassy of course will continue to follow up on the case, which is still active as of now."

Tori's aunt Ann Flynn said on RTE her niece and her mother Caroline had been trying to stay positive in recent days. She revealed: “They're very nervous and can't wait to get home. It's really terrible this has happened to a young woman full of life, full of adventure, she loved travelling.”

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald had raised the case in the Irish parliament earlier on Wednesday for the second day in a row, criticising what she said was the "medieval, grotesque treatment of women" in the UAE. She added: “(Tori) does not belong to Dubai, she belongs at home in Ireland.

"I think the public reaction, the public revulsion to the idea of a victim of vicious domestic violence being charged with offences herself, I think, really raised people's hackles. I hope her return home marks the end of this ordeal, of this nightmare for her. It raises fundamental questions around the treatment of women in Dubai."

Ms Towey had moved to the state in 2021 to work at Emirates.

World Traveler vs Well Traveled: What Does It All Mean?

You’ve probably heard the terms “world traveler” and “well traveled” before but what exactly do they mean?

Are these two terms synonymous or are there meaningful differences between them? And are you a world traveler or well traveled?

In this article, I’ll also share some of my own thoughts on what these terms mean and why they may or may not be important.

What does it mean to be a “world traveler?”

What it means to be a world traveler will likely differ based on your personal travels and exposure to other travelers.

To someone who has never ventured outside of their home country (or perhaps even their home state), a world traveler could look like someone who has visited a few countries in Europe, Asia, and perhaps an additional continent or two.

To a more experienced traveler, a world traveler might be someone who has visited 50+ or even 100+ countries.

So world traveler status is obviously very subjective and you will not find one universally agreed-upon threshold for countries visited in order to be a world traveler.

When I think about what a world traveler is, I think about somebody who has visited a lot of countries but more importantly explored diverse regions of the world.

Europe has nearly 30 countries and so you can spend a lot of time traveling to various closely connected countries in Europe and rack up a pretty impressive country count even over one summer.

There are a lot of unique and distinct cultures within Europe and so traveling through that continent would definitely give you a vast array of cultural experiences.

However, some countries like the Netherlands and Belgium or Portugal and Spain are very similar. In other words, if you wanted to travel between these countries, the non-language adjustment you would have to make would be minimal.

That’s why to me in order to be a world traveler you need to have experience in many different regions of the world.

But how should you define a region?

Lots of people think about being a world traveler in terms of how many continents they have visited so that could be one way to define a region.

For example, someone might argue that you should visit six of the habitable continents before you are considered a world traveler. Heck, some people might even throw Antarctica in the mix.

But I don’t like that approach because cultures vary way too much within continents. So I think it’s more helpful to think about different regions in terms of “mid-level cultures.”

These would be collective cultures that exist somewhere between continents and countries.

So I think it is much more helpful to break down regions into something like the following:

• Western Europe
• Eastern Europe
• Mediterranean Europe
• Central Europe
• Nordic Europe
• Northern Africa
• Western Africa
• Southern Africa
• Central Africa
• Middle East
• Southeastern Asia
• Central Asia
• Western Asia
• Andean South America
• Southern Cone South America
• New Guinea & other islands
• Mexico/Central America

(Note: this is not a comprehensive or well-settled list — just an example I put together in a few minutes.)

I think a world traveler is someone who has visited at least half of the (somewhat agreed-upon) regions of the world and has thus experienced the “majority” of the world’s (mid-level) cultures.

So to me, the country count is irrelevant for world traveler status.

I would much rather have in-depth travel experiences in ~20 countries covering 14 of the regions above than visit ~40 countries in only 7 regions.

One way to think about this distinction is to think about what it would be like to just hop between different countries.

Unlike hopping over to a neighboring country in the same region, hopping over to a different region usually forces you to re-acclimate in a much more demanding way. You often need to adjust to vastly different laws, languages, customs, climate, geography, and general ways of life.

In other words, the contrast between the countries jumps out at you in a much more profound way.

Some people might put more emphasis on exploring and appreciating the nuances between different countries within the same region.

Don’t expect to need to adjust too much when going between countries like the Netherlands and Belgium but when moving between countries in other regions you’ll still sometimes notice stark differences.

For example, the countries that make up Southeast Asia have a lot of key differences in religion, food, attitudes toward tourists, etc.

Sometimes the countries within the same region can be much more diverse than you would expect. But on average, it’s not going to be on the same level as what happens between different regions.

What does it mean to be well traveled?

Like defining a world traveler, defining what it means to be well traveled is ultimately a subjective determination.

The dictionary definition goes like this: “having been to many different places, especially to many different countries.”

But if you ask me, to be well traveled is to have had many meaningful travel experiences that have had profound effects on your life.

I’ve traveled to some countries where I spent most of my time relaxing in a luxury hotel, sipping champagne in swanky lounges, and soaking in hot tubs.

On some of those visits, I’ve (unfortunately) only spent a small amount of time venturing into the heart of cities and neighborhoods. It’s not my preferred way to travel but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy those experiences for what they were – a welcomed break from the grind.

But on those occasions, I left the country not feeling like I made any kind of meaningful connection with the place or the people that call it home.

I actually think that style of travel is okay, though. Not every visit to a new country has to blow you away with self-revelations or require total immersion in a culture.

But contrast that experience with the one I had in Cape Town, South Africa.

We explored the city nonstop for several days and capped it with a historical tour of sites that played a crucial role during apartheid. From Robben Island to District Six, we learned about the tragic events that took place and even met with some locals who had riveting stories to tell.

That’s an experience that made an immediate impact on my life and continues to do so today. Not only did I learn a lot, but I connected to those events and the stories in a way that I could have never done without traveling.

On the flip side, I also experienced what it was like to be harassed unrelentingly by locals outside of a market, which was uncomfortable and quite frankly a little bit scary.

Yes, it probably made me a more confident and resilient traveler but it also left me conflicted about my time in Cape Town.

Should I have just given them the money they were seeking? Or was I in the right for standing up against them? Did I even like this place?

To me, being well traveled is also about having experiences like those. Moments that leave you questioning things and sometimes wrestling with a bit of discomfort (aka being outside of your comfort zone).

Ironically, it’s not realizing how different every culture is that makes you well traveled, it’s realizing how similar the people are who make up those cultures.

Sure, the tastes for food, entertainment, and architecture can be vastly different across regions. And we all know how wild some religions and beliefs can be.

But when you boil it all down, you realize that everyone is finding different ways to fill the same human needs and desires.

Sometimes those methods feel dead wrong, bizzare, or at the very least a waste of time. But at some point you realize that if you were born in one of those places, you would likely be practicing the same customs and traditions with equal dedication.

Or maybe you wouldn’t.

But that’s also the point….

To me, leaving a place with a sense of conflict is one of the best attributes of travel because you’ll be wrestling with something that you may have otherwise ignored or failed to notice.

It forces you to think, do your own research, and contemplate your values.

For personal growth, it doesn’t get much better than that.

And that’s what being well-traveled is all about if you ask me.

Ultimately, the well-traveled and world traveler statuses are subjective determinations that could be based on a lot of different criteria.

I’m not the biggest fan of counting countries or seeking out these type of titles but I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing so. If it brings you happiness then go for it. To each their own.

But I do think that the most important thing to me is seeking out meaningful travel experiences because those offer you a tremendous way to evolve as a person. And one of the best ways to do that is to diversify your travels so that you are constantly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

A new competitor has emerged on the condiment shelf - Nando's ketchup.

It's being advertised as a twist on the traditional sauce, with a touch of "peri-peri magic" for your chips, burgers or bolognese.

This translates into a small amount of spices like cayenne pepper, bird's eye chilli, ginger, garlic, and paprika, as well onion and lemon purees.

We've taken a look at how it stacks up against the other ketchups on Asda's shelves below, with some key takeaways:

• Hellmann's has the most tomatoes and the least calories per serving
• Asda's own brand is by far the most affordable - with a very similar ingredients list to market leader Heinz
• Nando's is, just, the most expensive per 100g, though it's tricky to compare against all the below as some are only available in bigger bottles
• The main ingredient in Leon's, uniquely, is not tomatoes but water
• Leon's has the least sugar per serving

Asda is the first to offer Nando's tomato sauce but it is expected to roll out at Sainsbury's, Tesco and other supermarkets in the coming months.

Virgin and Clyesdale Bank have announced a slight drop in their standard variable rate mortgage rates - in what could be seen as a precursor to a base rate cut in a few weeks' time.

From today, their SVR stands at 9.24% - down from 9.49%.

Barclays and Halifax have also announced they are dropping selected fixed- rate deals from tomorrow - continuing a trend we have seen in recent weeks.

Cowboy builders face a crackdown on trader recommendation websites under new guidelines proposed by the industry watchdog.

The Competition and Markets Authority says the web pages must tackle fake reviews and vet the tradespeople they advertise after "worrying evidence" emerged.

The regulator has published a first draft of its advice following concerns over websites that fail to sanction rogue traders, offer a complaints process, or monitor traders while making misleading claims about their trustworthiness.

Plusnet customers will from today see their mid-contract price changes expressed as "pounds and pence" rather than percentages in a bid by the internet provider to make information clearer for customers.

Price comparison service Uswitch has praised the move which gives "greater clarity" to consumers.

"The new model provides certainty when it comes to the cost of your contract and makes it easier for customers to manage their finances," the Uswitch telecoms expert Ernest Doku said.

The new model, which applies to new and existing customers who take out contracts after today, will see mid-contract charges at a flat rate for all customers - a yearly increase of £3 per month.

People with coeliac disease are paying up to 35% more for their weekly shop, research has found, with some even eating gluten to avoid paying higher costs despite the potential impact on their health.

A new report by Coeliac UK has found that 77% of people with the disease struggle to afford gluten-free products from supermarkets.

Seven in 10 people said shopping gluten free "adversely affects their quality of life" due to the cost and availability of the food on supermarket shelves and online.

Around 4% are choosing to eat gluten despite the risk to their health because of concerns around the cost of gluten-free food, while 27% would eat products with "may contain" for the same reason.

The research by Coeliac UK revealed that loaves of bread are 4.5 times more expensive on average, while pasta and plain flour are twice as pricey when made gluten free.

If you're thinking of stocking up on Sainsbury's snacks and drinks for Sunday's big game, you'd better do it ahead of time.

Like rival Tesco, the supermarket has announced it is closing convenience stores and petrol stations early across England so staff can tune into the Euros final.

More than a thousand branches will be closing at 7.30pm on Sunday, rather than 10pm or 11pm.

"We want to give our colleagues the chance to tune in live and cheer on England with friends and family. The atmosphere in stores is electric after last night's win," said Clodagh Moriarty, chief retail and technology officer.

Supermarket hours are unaffected as they usually close before the 8pm kick-off. 

Any online grocery orders which have already been booked will be honoured.

All branches will reopen at their usual time on Monday.

Earlier this week, business presenter Ian King answered questions from Money blog readers about what the new Labour government means for their personal finances.

One question related to the two-child cap on child benefit - which Labour have at times suggested they're ideologically opposed to, but won't commit to changing because of the cost.

Responding to a question about whether taxes could be raised for oil and gas companies to pay for scrapping the cap, King said: "The Resolution Foundation has estimated that the two-child benefit cap will save the government £2.5bn during the current financial year - which would rise to £3.6bn if applied to all families claiming universal credit.

"Labour is committed to raising the levy on North Sea oil and gas producers from the current 75% to 78% - and has earmarked the money raised will go towards funding its wider plans for energy and, in particular, decarbonisation.

"It would be ill-advised to raise taxes further. The decisions it has made have already had an impact on investment in the North Sea, as I report here.

"And don't forget, the cap is not just about saving money. It's also about avoiding awkward newspaper headlines and stories about big families being paid a small fortune in benefits of the kind that embarrassed the last Labour government and angered so many of its traditional working-class supporters in particular."

A "nationwide issue" has been affecting card payments.

Many social media users were reporting being unable to pay for their shopping in supermarkets this morning.

More than 600 people were flagging issues with Visa on Down Detector as of 9.45am, while over 100 had problems with Mastercard payments as of 10am.

A sign in one Sainsbury's store was requesting customers pay for their shopping in cash.

The supermarket said on social media it had been aware of a "nationwide issue" with card payments.

Vanessa Meehan, in Twickenham, said: "I've just been turned away at Sainsbury's as they can't accept card payments. Petrol station also coned off. The car is running on fumes and I need to get supplies."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told Sky News at 11am that contactless payments had resumed after being "briefly unavailable for a few minutes this morning".

They said this was caused by an issue with its third-party payment provider.

"We're accepting all payments as usual and continue to monitor the situation. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused," the supermarket said.

Asda also confirmed its payment systems were back up and running following temporary issues with Visa.

A Visa spokesperson confirmed to Sky News it had been aware cardholders were experiencing issues when making payments.

"While Visa's systems are operating normally, we are working with our partners to investigate," they added.

Mastercard said it was "aware of some payment transaction issues at select merchants in the UK" and was working to gather more information.

"There is no current indication that these issues are related to our network," a spokesperson said.

The UK's biggest supermarket chain has told customers its Express stores across England will close at 7.30pm instead of the usual 10pm or 11pm on Sunday - after England reached the Euro 2024 final.

It said the decision had been taken to allow its staff to get home or to the pub in time for kick-off at 8pm. 

Employees who do not want to watch the match will be paid as normal, it said. 

Stores will be open as normal the following morning. 

England are playing Spain in the final - and will have the chance to become the first England men's team to win a major tournament since the World Cup in 1966.

Faltering expectations for imminent interest rate cuts are playing out in financial markets today.

The pound is at a four-month high versus the dollar at $1.28.

That has been largely put down to remarks by Bank of England rate-setter Huw Pill, the Bank's chief economist, that the timing of the UK's first rate cut was an "open question".

He spoke up just 24 hours after another member of the monetary policy committee ruled out personal support for a reduction on 1 August.

Jonathan Haskel said too many stubborn inflationary pressures remained.

As such, financial markets now see only a 50/50 chance of a rate reduction to 5% from 5.25% at the next Bank meeting.

The chance of a cut had stood at 60% at the start of the week.

The pound has lifted as higher interest rates are generally supportive of a domestic currency.

Elsewhere, the FTSE 100 has opened to a flat calm - up just a couple of points at 8,000.

A big focus for investors this morning was the interim decision by water regulator Ofwat on what suppliers could charge their customers over the next five years.

To give you some idea of the reaction, shares in United Utilities and Severn Trent opened up by around 2%. Those of Pennon, the company behind South West Water, were up by more than 6%.

Water companies in England and Wales have been told they will not be allowed to impose the hikes to bills they have demanded, the industry regulator has said in an interim verdict on their business plans for the next five years.

Ofwat declared that it was minded to slash, by a third, the combined increases that the 16 companies had submitted.

It left the average bill, the watchdog said, set to rise by £19 a year or 21% over the period.

The appearance of finer weather helped the economy recover some lost ground in May, according to official figures that were better than expected.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) recorded gross domestic product growth of 0.4% in the month, compared with its earlier determination of  zero growth during April .

A poll of economists by Reuters had pointed to a 0.2% increase for monthly gross domestic product in May.

On a quarterly basis, the UK's interest rate-driven recession of the second half of 2023 ended at the start of this year as the  Bank of England  ended its rate hiking cycle which was designed to cool inflation by choking demand in the economy.

Our mission is to provide an enjoyable, efficient planning process while building a trip that reflects your travel interests, personality, and budget. Your role is to focus on the fun part of traveling — saying “yes” or “no” to a beer garden bike ride in Munich, to a river rafting trip in Colorado, or to a Midnight Sun boat ride in Norway.
