Small-Group 8-Hour Shore Excursion Tour with Hidden Gems from Djupivogur

djupivogur shore excursions

Description

This fantastic shore excursion tour gives visitors the chance to see the hidden natural gems of East Iceland. Travelers eager to see beautiful scenery and visit peaceful, remote areas should book this magical eight-hour tour now.

This small-group tour departs daily from Djupivogur harbor. East Iceland is a premier vacation destination due to its picturesque scenery and isolated atmosphere. Here you will have the chance to enjoy many incredible natural features.

On this tour, you’ll have stunning seaside and countryside views as you explore the Breiddalur valley, the Heydalur area, and the Berufjordur fjord before finishing the day with a soak in the Vok Baths.

The remoteness of East Iceland has helped keep its many waterfalls pristine over the years. The region is also home to a vast number of fjords. These narrow and deep bodies of water, created by glaciers and surrounded by cliffs, are especially prominent on this Eastfjords tour.

After pick-up from the Djupivogur harbor, your friendly driver will take you along the scenic coastline from Djupivogur to the Breiddalur valley. Here you’ll visit an abandoned farm and catch a glimpse of two beautiful waterfalls.

After Breiddalur valley, the tour visits the local church in Heydalur, giving you insight into the communities of East Iceland and their architectural style.

Once you’ve visited the church, you’ll head to the Vok Baths, which are immersed in a beautiful lake, for an unbeatable relaxation experience.

The Vok Baths feature geothermally heated pools at lake level, a hot tub above, and a cold tunnel leading to the baths. In addition, the Vok Baths have a sauna, a bar, a tea bar, and a restaurant that makes its dishes using fresh and local produce.

On top of this, the water flowing through the baths is so clean you can drink it.

After enjoying the Vok Baths, you’ll return to Djupivogur. You can marvel at the excellent mountain and fjord views on the way.

Towns in East Iceland are often small and remote and offer a sense of peace and calmness that is hard to find in busy cities. The gorgeous scenery makes it easy to get lost in the nature surrounding you.

While an Icelandic cruise can give you breathtaking views from the cruise ship, a shore excursion allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Eastfjords fully. This eight-hour tour from Djupivogur includes many incredible experiences. Once you’ve begun your journey in the Eastfjords, you won’t ever want to leave.

Take the first step in having an unforgettable day with this eight-hour, small-group tour of East Iceland featuring some of Iceland’s best-hidden gems. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Join your local guide and set out from Djúpivogur's old harbor on this tour that introduces you to the fascinating cultural aspect of this tiny town.

Head to Audun's Stone & Mineral Museum. Audun -- a local man -- used to collect rocks and stones as a hobby. Now, it could more aptly be described as an obsession. When his collection grew to gargantuan proportions, he invested in a rock cutter and polishing equipment. The next step was to open a stone and mineral museum so that he could store and share his fascinating geode collection. During your visit, you'll gain a whole new perspective on the hidden dimensions of everyday rocks. What is very plain and uninteresting on the outside can be dazzlingly beautiful on the inside once the rock is cut and polished. All the rocks and minerals on display here were found locally. The east coast of Iceland abounds with agate, quartz crystal, zeolite and many other minerals.

In the Old Harbor area, contemplate the unusual outdoor granite artwork placed around the waterfront. It's hard to say whether Djúpivogur is more famous for its real bird life or for its Eggs of Merry Bay (Eggin i Gledivik) sculpture, which has quite possibly stolen the show. The sculpture consists of 34 to-scale, oversized eggs dotted along the water's edge, each representing a local bird species. The largest egg represents the throat diver -- a bird commonly seen in and around Djúpivogur.

Next, head to 'the tank' -- not far from the eggs. Once used as a storage facility for fish-liver oil, the round tank gracing the harbor has been thoroughly cleaned and restored and is now a venue for performing musicians and exhibiting artists. It was officially opened in 2016 and has been very successful. Artists and musicians are drawn to the idyllic, serene surroundings and to the pleasing acoustics inside the tank. Step inside and feel free to give your vocal cords a thorough workout.

Your tour ends at the pier, but you may choose to walk further and explore the village on your own.

Bird sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. The birds start migrating away around mid-August. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Minimum age is 8 years.

We'll be on a HAL cruise in July, and looking for independent tours at these 2 ports. Any suggestions, and can you generally pick up a tour at these ports?

I've found a Djupivogur private tour (don't need private, but no cheaper for more guests) going to the glacial lagoon, Stokksnes and Hofn, but at $418AUD pp, it's very expensive. Has anyone done this tour? It's on Viator and provided by Artistica Tours which have very few reviews.

Also a bit of a concern is that it's the last port, and hoping it gets back in time.

I'm struggling to find anything for Heimaey.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'd advise against booking thru Viator, as it's just a middle man and if you have any issues with timing or weather you will be unable to communicate with the tour company itself.

I've not heard of that company.  Troll and Arctic Adventures are two of the most commonly mentioned companies over on the TripAdvisor Iceland forum.  I'd highly recommend you look over there for any specific advice.

In general, there is not a lot of tourist infrastructure outside of Reykjavik and Akureyri.  Most other ports are tiny villages, and there are not many (any?) tour choices outside of what the ship offers or just wandering around the village.  There is no usable public transportation for tourists.  Some ports will have nearby waterfalls, etc, you can get to with a short-moderate walk.

TBH, Iceland is best seen with a land tour, but you are not alone.  This question comes up frequently over on TA.

Thanks

Heimey has some great RIB boat excursions you should be able to book directly.  They cancel them in bad weather -- we had wind on our day there a few years back and all tours were canceled (as was our ferry back to the mainland), but we were there in September and it gets windy in Iceland around that time.   We had a car and explored the island, loved it, but the RIB boat would have been a blast

Heimaey is easy to walk around and has an excellent museum that relates the story of the volcano eruption in 1973.

Thanks for all the information. Do you think we'd be able to book one of the RIB tours once we're there and the port? We wouldn't go on anything if it's windy, so prefer not to prebook that type of tour. We're not into wild activities  😆

I wouldn't be surprised if fellow cruisers had booked them all in advance.  They cancel when it's windy

The very limited options mean they book well in advance.  Iceland is not like other countries where you pull up to the pier and companies are out there recruiting customers for the day.  Booking when you get there works fine for many parts of the world, just not Iceland.

Just an update and a thankyou for the information given. I have booked Artistica Tours for Djupivogur and have another couple joining us and hoping more will join. At present there's 30 guests from the ship doing their tour in small groups.

In Heimaey I've booked a 2 hour tour with Eyjatour.

Maple30.  How did you book Artistica Tours?  Their website is very vague.

8 hours ago, blackfly said: Maple30.  How did you book Artistica Tours?  Their website is very vague.

Yes it is, I've been in contact with them direct numerous times. The company has been operating land based tours since 1995 and have just started offering cruise ship tours. They've got 4 guides and cars and can accommodate 41 passengers across their vehicles. They also have access to a larger bus for groups up to 40.

At present they are in the process of finalising their website where you can book direct for a cheaper price. It should be up and running by the end of the month. They require a deposit of 50 euro, and you can pay the deposit on the day by cash or credit card.

I've got 1 couple joining us and are getting the full day tour for 230 euro each. Still looking for another couple or two which can drop the price to 225, then 220 pp. At present you can book on TA, Get you Guide etc, but it's dearer.

I was very wary considering the lack of reviews, but they told me they're new to shore excursions and the couple of tours that the guide Adriana gave had  excellent reviews, so we're going with them. Anything's better than the overinflated ships tours which are in USD, so add 50% for Australians. A similiar ships tours would cost us $524 AUD PP for a 5 hour tour with no lunch!

We are a party of 5 and are still looking for something in  Djupivogur. Do you think that there would be room for us?

I made an typo error. You pay the deposit at the end of this month when their website is finalised. You can pay the BALANCE on the day

Are you on the same cruise? We're in Djipivogur on Monday 29th July. This is not the official roll call for our cruise, leaving Amsterdam on the 20th July.

I had just put up this forum question regarding the 2 ports I was still looking for tours from.

I'm not sure how big our minibus is. Artistica advertise groups of up to 8. I'll ask them how many seats the bus has.

No, sorry. We are not on the same cruise. We are in Djupivogur on Monday 10 June. I misread your post. I am interested in the Artistica Tour though. I've emailed them two times, and haven't heard anything back. -)

That's strange re emailing them. They take about 2 days to get back to me, probably because of the time difference. If you do go, let me know how it was please. The communication I've had with them has been pretty good.

More about the Tour

We start the tour by driving along the coast to Eystrahorn. Lesser-known than their Western counterpart of Vestrahorn, these gabbro mountains are incredibly steep and beautifully coloured. The surrounding area of Lonafjordur is one of the first stops for migratory birds that have flown thousands of miles and is known for its rich birdlife.

We continue through the tunnel to South Iceland. After passing the town of Hofn, we take the gravel road along the Hoffellssandur glacier valley between towering mountains to arrive at the Hoffellsjokull glacier tongue.

An outlet glacier of the main Vatnajokull glacier, this glacier started advancing from the main glacier during the Little Ice Age in the 15th century. The glacier calves into a most beautiful lake, which is dotted with icebergs in shades of blue with streaks of black ash. The fewer tour operators and the gravel road make the place a lesser-visited gem away from the tourist crowds of South Iceland.

On the way back, it is possible to take a detour to the town of Hofn for lunch. Known as the lobster capital of Iceland, there are some fine restaurants as well as a local brewery.

It is also possible to visit the Stokksnes peninsula, which has great views of the Vestrarhorn mountain and also features an abandoned movie set of a Viking village.
