Disney Dream Sustains Damage to Stern in Collision with Pier in Nassau
According to social media reports, the Disney Dream hit the dock while maneuvering into her berth earlier today in Nassau, Bahamas. Based on the following photos shared with us by Caitlin Maddaline, the Disney Dream’s stern was dented above the waterline, but it does not appear to have ruptured the hull.
This second photo appears to shows the Dream’s impact point on the pier.
Caitlin told us that crew were prepping the area and believes they will be painting the area of the stern.
Below is video of the Disney Dream backing into the concrete mooring. WARNING ⚠️ ADULT LANGUAGE – basically a preview of Connelly’s inner monologue on his first day on a the job as President of DCL as he is waiting for Iger to pick up the phone.
If you have any additional photos or video please email us at [email protected].
The Disney Dream is currently in the middle of a 3-Night Bahamian Cruise which departed Port Canaveral on Friday September 29th. The Disney Dream is scheduled to visit Castaway Cay on Sunday before retiring to Port Canaveral early Monday morning for the start of a 4-night Bahamian voyage. We reached out to Disney Cruise Line to see if they anticipate any itinerary delays due to the damage to the stern. If and when we hear anything official we will update this post.
UPDATE- October 1st: crew setting up early to address the impact zone while guests enjoy Castaway Cay.

Wow… is Nassau one of the ports that the Pilot Boat driver has to steer the ship into the dock? It’s hard to believe this even happened (and 3 weeks before our cruise)!
As far as I know, the pilots usually just navigate ships in and out of harbors and waterways around a port. The captain of the ship docks. Because of new ship pod systems, they don’t even need tugs anymore to maneuver in and out of the docking areas. But it looks like this time they did.
Mari, the pilots always need to maneuver the ships into and out of docks/harbors. If a captain does it, it is strictly illegal and can result in serious consequences.
Harbor pilots do not moor ship. They advise the captain when entering and leave port. They do not drive ship.
The pilot advises the captain who is in full control.
I worked on the dream for 2 years! The ONLY port the Disney captain actually docks is Castaway so this was the pilot boat driver. Disney takes Safety VERY seriously so don’t fear when you cruise! You will be in very safe hands
I wonder who the Captain of the Dream is (I know it wasn’t his fault).
Kind of scary, it’s not like it nicked the edge of the pier it smacked into it. Thank goodness the damage is not more severe.
I sail the Dream tomorrow! Yikes. I hope there is no change to the itinerary. I would hate to miss out on Castaway Cay.
Wonder if they’ll change their procedure of backing in stern first? SCOTT, If you receive any photos after they sand and paint, please post. Would love to go down in the engine room or stern compartment to see what internal damage was done. Thanks.
This was the pilot boat driver who did this. The only port the Disney captains dock in is Castaway Cay.
Yes the Harbor Pilot is driving the boat, not for long. My wife and daughter are on this cruise ?
And the guy filming it is talking an awful lot of smack for a dude who’s shooting video vertically.

This IS the best comment here!!!
The ship is fine and those of you cruising soon, just go out there and have fun.I’ve cruised 8 times with disney and they are awesome.
My wife and I were on this cruise. We were on our veranda as we pulled into dock. Never felt anything, didn’t know about it till that evening.
Just so everyone is aware of what a Pilot actually does. The Pilot has specific knowledge of hazards in relation to the specific port, and also knowledge of the currents and sea conditions. The pilot makes recommendations to the Captain and Bridge Officers on the proper speed to enter a port, and he/she will advise the best and safest location to make a turn in the port. The Pilot “NEVER” controls the vessel, and it’s always the Bridge Officers that maneuver the vessel. A Bridge Officer is also on the aft mooring deck, and the forward mooring deck, and they constantly update the Bridge on any hazards and distances that the Bridge Team can’t see from their location. Knowing this specific vessel personally, and also being involved in the arrival procedure, the Captain would be on the Port Side Bridge wing looking straight down the side of the ship, and would have been very aware that the ship was not properly lined up for this maneuver. The officer on the aft mooring deck would also have been calling on the radio to the bridge telling them of the impending collision. One thing to add, that there is always a possibility that it could have been a technical failure with something being controlled on the Bridge.
Watched it leave the port on the web cam today. They painted it and all seems well.
Actually, the Pilots do not actually handle the ship. they simply advise the Captain and Crew on the proper headings and such in the channel and harbor. They do directly navigate; however they do not handle the ship’s thrusters and pods during docking procedures. Would you hand over a $1B piece of equipment to a stranger? The Captain can take the Conn at any time (though that is rare) if they feel the pilot is doing something wrong. Sometimes the Pilots simply advise and handle communication and don’t give orders at all. In some ports there can actually be “Docking Pilots” that handle very difficult docking procedures, but this is rather rare.
I used to work onboard and, boy, I’ve heard stories! At that point in the procedure it would have been the Captain or whomever he appointed (like the Staff Captain or even a more junior, though qualified, officer) at the direct controls on the bridge wing.
This is one of the major misunderstandings of the pilot’s position. That being said, someone is in trouble (or fired) for this one.
Captain Lee will sure be mad!
Along with Captain Mickey, Captain Hook, and Captain Jack. 🙂
With all the technology I don’t know how come they don’t have cameras to help the captain steer the big boat in and out of port they should put cameras on all big boat it would help I thank . Marty M giving you the idea and if they put cameras on the ships I should be awarded not money just thank you for the idea about the cameras??????!!!!!!????!!!
The ships have cameras everywhere.
Also from Marty McFarland alarms like vehicle have on the back bumpers with cameras that would I thank really help the captain steer better I am signing off if you like my idea let me know thanks have a great and bless day
No! No Pilot is not control at any time on any ship. It i the sole responsibility of the captain and crew. Tell you what though, it is an Italian crew. Search all the cruise ship crashes and you know why this has happened.
Does anyone know what happened in the end? what was the main problem or why this happened? I´m very curious…. And do we know the Captain of the Dream that day? Was it Captain Henry?
I still do not know.. And we were on the dream when it happened and still know nothing.. ugh
This happened when we were on it… It was shocking.. Friends had heard about it on land before i even had chance to tell them..But what really bothered me is no explanation or nothing from Disney.
why did you need an explanation? Other people on that cruise didnt even feel it, so how were you shocked? Go about your vacation.
Because it’s the right thing to do.You would not be shocked if your ship had damage like this? I might say you are not the brightest crayon in the box then.. We did go about our vacation. . Thanks for the reply.
My family and I have cruised on the Dream 4 times. We love it! All 4 times the docking was so smooth we didn’t even know it was docking. I feel sure it had to be a mechanical problem or just a bad day for a Junior officer. I would cruise again on that ship anytime!
The only time I know of that a Captain relinguishes command of his vessel is as it is pulled into or exiting a drydock. Shipyard engineers are responsible for the ship’s safe entrance and exit from drydock. Pilots are advisors and the Captain can chose to to disregard the pilots advice as the Captain is responsible for the ship’s operation. The owning company can impose SOPs (standard operating procedures) but maritime law will regard the Captain as responsible for the vessel.regardless of company policies.

Disney Dream brings the magic to Port Saint John, marking first ever stop in Atlantic Canada
The magic could be felt at Port Saint John Thursday.
Ten thousand passengers aboard three separate cruise liners docked in the Port City for the day, filling the uptown core. 4,000 of those passengers sailed in on one of the most magical ships at sea, the Disney Dream.
“We have some amazing port adventures right here in New Brunswick,” says Cruise Director Lee Hawkins. “I know that our guests are experiencing a good time, and I definitely think our crew will find some time to go ashore as well.”
While Disney Cruise lines are no stranger to maritime ports, Thursday marked the first time the Disney Dream ship has come to Atlantic Canada. It is the lone Disney cruise ship to make the call to a maritime port in 2023.
“I know a lot of people, even from places like Fredericton are coming down today just to see the ship come in,” says Beth Hudson, who is the branch manager for CAA’s office in Saint John. “It’s so exciting when you hear, especially when you see it take off out of port and they are playing the music. It’s just something special.”
The Disney Dream features top notch accommodations, equisetic dining options, and of course Mickey Mouse and the gang. It even features Broadway calibre performances like Beauty and the Beast. There are also areas designated for individual age groups to enjoy.
“We’ve also got dedicated spaces to reconnect as a family and disconnect to the outside world,” boasts Hawkins. “That can be through trivia’s, gameshows, though some of our craft sessions, we have lounges deigned just for our families in mind.”
What makes this voyage of the Dream so special is the celebration of Halloween with the cruise lines “Halloween on the High Seas” packed with haunted tricks and fun-filled treats for the whole family.
“It’s not so scary here on board, because we have our own “Mousquerade” dance party where we encourage all of our families to jump in, get creative, and dance along with Mickey and the gang,” Hawkins says. “And that’s after some fantastic trick or treating.”
Multiple Disney officials say the Dream ship is their favourite in the Disney fleet.
“The difference is that customer service level that our crew provide,” Hawkins admits. “Because when they enjoy what they do, we know the guest are going to enjoy what they do.”
“Everyone knows and loves Disney so the fact that we have a little piece of this Disney magic in our own backyard is really special,” says Hudson. “Also the fact that this is the only stop the Dream is doing on this itinerary just shows the importance of Saint John as growing with popularity for international tourism and as a prime cruise destination.”
Hudson says residents looking to jump on a cruise is in high demand, citing it was the fastest sector of the tourism industry to rebound following the pandemic.
“Cruisers love to cruise and Maritimers love to cruise, but we are finding a really big push from first timers,” Hudson says. “Having a ship like the Disney Dream in our own background certainly peaks interest.”
The Disney Dream departed Saint John at 4 p.m. Thursday to begin its trip back to New York.

Disney dream arrives in miami after bidding farewell to port canaveral, disney dream sailed out of central florida port for more than a decade.
Landon McReynolds , Producer
MIAMI – The Disney Dream cruise ship arrived at Port Miami this week after bidding farewell to its former home port -- Port Canaveral.
The change comes as the cruise line is preparing to welcome its newest ship, the Disney Wish , to Central Florida later this month.
In order to make room at Port Canaveral, the company is shuffling some of its cruise ships around, including the Disney Dream, WKMG reported .
The ship arrived back at Port Canaveral Monday morning to disembark weekend cruise passengers before heading to its new port in Miami.
“The Disney Dream will be leaving us on June 6, and the Disney Dream has always called Port Canaveral home,” Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO, said during a commission meeting last month. “So, it’s heading down to Miami and next year, it’s going to Europe - so that ship probably won’t be back for a while. It’s been a long stay since she was delivered about 10 years ago.”
Following the ship’s time in Miami, Disney Cruise Line said in 2023 the Disney Dream will sail from Barcelona and Rome to picturesque ports of call throughout the Mediterranean, including a first-ever 7-night sailing to the Greek Isles with stops in the ever-popular ports of Santorini and Mykonos. Later that year, the ship will travel from Southampton and will feature cruises to a wealth of destinations including Spain, France, the British Isles, Norway and Iceland.
Construction of the Disney Dream began back in 2009. A year later, the ship was delivered to Disney Cruise Line.
Early in the morning on Jan. 4, 2011, the ship arrived to fanfare and fireworks at Port Canaveral.
Just a couple of weeks later on Jan. 26, 2011, the ship set sail on its maiden voyage from Central Florida. Since that time, the ship has taken millions of passengers on 3- and 4-night sailings to Disney’s Castaway Cay and Nassau.
At 1,115 feet, the Disney Dream is longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and longer than the height of New York City’s Chrysler Building, making it one of the fleet’s bigger ships.
The Dream’s sister ship, the Disney Fantasy, will continue to call Port Canaveral home.
The Disney Wish is scheduled to arrive at the port on June 20 between the hours of 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. at cruise terminal 8 and 10.
The Disney Wish will be powered by liquified natural gas, or LNG, one of the cleanest-burning fuels available, officials said. At approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, the ship will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
When the Disney Wish sets sail this summer, it will be filled with innovative new experiences steeped in Disney storytelling, including the first-ever Disney attraction at sea, immersive dining experiences themed to “Frozen” and Marvel, and a high-end lounge set in the Star Wars galaxy.

About Disney Cruise Line
Did you know that Disney Cruise Lines is really named Magical Cruise Company, Ltd ? Disney Cruise Lines is a fictitious name the London based company does business under which is not uncommon for modern corporate entities.
Disney Cruise Lines operates as a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company. It was originally founded in 1996 under the name the Magical Cruise Company Limited, later changing to Disney Cruise Lines.
Disney's Fleet of Cruise Ships
Disney holds just under three percent of the world’s cruising market, as measured by passengers. The company also earns just over two percent of the total revenue earned by cruise companies throughout the world.
Currently, Disney Cruise Line’s fleet includes the following ships:
- Disney Magic
- Disney Wonder
- Disney Dream
- Disney Fantasy
However, they plan to add an additional three next-generation ships by 2025. The first vessel projected to go into service, the Disney Wish, is the only one of the three that has been named so far. It is projected to sail in the summer of 2022.
Do you have a case against Disney Cruises?
Like other oceangoing passenger vessels engaged in maritime commerce, Disney cruises has a duty of reasonable care under the circumstances. In layman’s terms, that means they are required under the general maritime law to inspect their ships for hazards, correct any dangers they know of through repairs or maintenance and warn passengers of dangers they actually or probably should know about.
Stated differently, unless you can prove that Disney failed to do one of the obligations mentioned above, you will not be able to legally establish that they were negligent. However, an experienced cruise ship passenger accident attorney will tell you that these obligations are not always apparent to the untrained eye. In fact, evidence of the negligent action or the failure to act as it relates to these obligations are difficult to prove. Moreover, they are only provable in a court of law when you can establish their relevance and their probative value.
Cruise lines like Disney have their onboard security officers investigate accidents to determine the cause moments after they learn a guest was injured onboard. If it is important enough for them to investigate the incident, why wouldn’t you?
Above all else, you have a right to know what caused your accident. You also have a right to compensation if you can prove someone else was at fault. That’s why, if you were hurt aboard a ship or in a foreign port of call on a shore excursion, you should look into what caused the accident. In fact, that is part of the service our cruise ship accident lawyers offer to all of the clients we agree to represent. This ensures each client is given the best chances of success based on the merits of their respective cases.
Investigations allow an experienced cruise ship accident lawyer to determine when an accident is just an accident or whether it was caused by another’s negligence. Without a doubt, knowing the difference is critical to successfully making a cruise ship passenger injury claim against cruise lines like Disney Cruise Lines.
Common Injuries & Accidents on Disney Cruises
Passengers who are injured while on a Disney cruise ship, tender, or in port should seek immediate medical attention for their injuries and should promptly report the incident. Many times, cruise lines count on passengers not reporting, and they will use the defense of “lack of reported incident” to fight a claim that is later filed.
Some of the most common accidents that occur on cruise ships include:
- Slip and Falls
- Trip and Falls
- Gangway Accidents
- Drownings and Pool Accidents
- Malfunctioning Doors or Equipment
- Tender Mishaps
- Shore Excursion Accidents
- Overcrowded deck parties and spilled drinks.
The clock is ticking: Tips to Maximize Your Recovery
Injuries sustained on a cruise ship, must be thoroughly documented. Immediately after the accident occurs, doing the following can help maximize your recovery:
- Photograph the scene of the accident.
- Inform crew members.
- Record the names of witnesses.
- Seek immediate medical attention.
- Request a copy of medical records.
It is critical for a passenger injured because of Disney Cruise Lines’ negligence to act quickly. Accordingly, time is of the essence when making a claim and filing a lawsuit against a major cruise line like Disney Cruise Line. Passengers have just one year from the date of the accident to file a claim. It is important that you hire an attorney experienced in handling cruise injuries in order to successfully recover damages to compensate for an injury sustained while aboard a Disney Cruise Ship.
These claims may only be filed in the circuit courts in Brevard, County Florida or in the federal US District Court for the Middle District of Florida. That’s because their home port is Port Canaveral, Florida which is about one hour east of Orlando, Florida where their theme parks are located.

GALVESTON, Texas – A ferocious storm that struck a cruise ship while in the Gulf of Mexico Friday left at least one cabin flooded as torrential rains poured down.

As heavy rains fall, water on the balcony can then floods into the cabin itself, soaking a path through the carpet, under a bed and leading to the door.
The dark portion of the carpet shows where the floodwater flowed into the cabin from the balcony.
"Hope there’s nothing electrical that we’re gonna get electrocuted on," said Jessica Helms, who filmed the flooding in her cabin.

She referred to the flooding as a "complete river" that extended across the hall to her neighbor’s room.
Disney Cruise Line Hosts Career Panel for Broward County Students
- February 4, 2024
Disney Cruise Line hosted dozens of Broward County high school students on Wednesday, Jan. 31, to learn about careers in the maritime industry, according to a press release.
While the Disney Dream was docked at the port, the cruise line partnered with Junior Achievement of South Florida to host an interactive career panel for students participating in JA Career Bound, a program created to help students build skills and gain knowledge of local industries. Students spoke to several Disney Cruise Line crew members and officers who work aboard the ship, in a range of areas, including human resources, guest services, and entertainment. Crew Members shared details with students about their roles and life at sea and shared some tips for pursuing a maritime career.
One of the panelists, Gabe Biser, who serves as human resources manager aboard the Disney Dream, is also a former Junior Achievement student.
Biser said: “Being part of the cruise industry has been an incredible experience, and I am grateful for the mentors who guided me along my career journey. It’s an honor to share my experiences with these students, and I hope to inspire them to explore industries they may not be familiar with.”
Following the career panel, students explored Port Everglades and learned about port and terminal operations. “We appreciated the opportunity to showcase our port’s diverse operations, including cargo, as part of the wealth of maritime careers available to our youth,” said Glenn Wiltshire, acting director of Port Everglades.
“I joined the Junior Achievement Career Bound program because I want to learn about how to advance in a professional work environment to pursue my dream jobs,” said Tyler Hilaire, a senior student at McArthur High School and a Junior Achievement Career Bound Ambassador. “I learned today from Disney Cruise Line that there are so many interesting careers in this industry.”
“We’re grateful for Disney Cruise Line’s ongoing support,” said Laurie Sallarulo, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of South Florida (JA). “These initiatives play a pivotal role in shaping the future workforce by offering valuable insights and opportunities, and empowering young minds to navigate their career paths successfully.”
