The Complete Guide to Churdhar Peak Trek

Churdhar Peak Trek takes you to the highest peak in the outside Himalayan range. George Everest made his astronomical reading of the Himalayan Mountains. Chur-Dhar is also known as Churi-Chandni Dhar (Bangles of snow ridge). The approach to the Churdhar summit can be done from three sides. The shortest and most popular one is from Nauradhar in the Sirmour district. The peak is surrounded by a 56 square km forest sanctuary, which makes trekking a delightful affair. The trek to Churdhar can be done from May till November when the snow melts and the trails are accessible. The trek is a steep hike inside a dense Deodar forest, terraced fields and Gujjar pasture lands.

The last one hour of the trek is a moraine walk as you leave the forests behind. At the summit, the views are outstanding. On a clear day, you can see Badrinath and Kedarnath, The Gangetic basin, Sutlej River, Shimla, Chail, Kufri, Kasauli & Chakrata.

➤ Highlights of the trek

  • At a modest elevation of just under 12,000 feet, Churdhar is the highest peak outside the Himalayan range. Very few know that it is from the top of this peak
  • George Everest made his astronomical reading of the Himalayan Mountains. Chur-Dhar is also known as Churi-Chandni Dhar (Bangles of snow ridge).
  • This peak is visible from Shimla, Kasauli, Solan & Kufri and retains a streak of snow on its upper ridge throughout the year.

➤ Trail Information

At around 8 am, I got a bus for Rajgarh from DC Office, Solan. Rajgarh is also known as Peach Valley and is famous for the HPMC factory and its untouched scenic beauty. It took about one and a half hours to reach Rajgarh. To my luck, as soon as I stepped out of the bus, I saw a bus conductor calling out “Nohra!” I rushed towards the bus and jumped in but got no seat.

In no time, the bus got crowded and the journey began. The views during the journey were scenic, with green valleys across a large span of my vision. At 11.45 am, I reached the Nohradhar bus stand, which is not quite a bus stand but a road where buses halt. Just in front, I saw a board welcoming tourists for the trek to Churdhar. I took supplies like water and food items for the journey and started my trek at about noon.

Since this is a very locally popular trail, there is no need for guides. The initial part of the journey is a bit difficult as the trail is full of rocks. It is advised to trek with good trekking shoes. After a few hundred metres, I thought of climbing the mountain directly rather than following the conventional path. There was no trail, but I carried on hoping to find a trail, but even after an hour, nothing appeared.

Meadows of Jamnala-Churdhar peak trek-treks in himachal- Indiahikes

Meadows of Jamnala. Picture Credit : Amit Tiwary

Then, I passed by a house, where I asked for the route to Churdhar from persons there and to my luck, they confirmed that I was on right track. For 15 to 20 minutes, I trekked and again got confused about the trail. So I had to wait there for someone to pass by so that I could confirm the route. After a few minutes, a guy came from uphill and confirmed the route and now, the trail appeared.

I resumed my journey following the trail that was very recognizable now. The views were very scenic, passing through forests and meadows with the sounds of chirping birds. There were many spots for camping; however, I had to go further so I erased any thoughts of camping there.

At about 3 pm I reached Jamnala, which is a plain meadow or rather can be called a large ground with a couple of shops for basic supplies. So, I halted there for tea and filled my water bottles from a tap present on the ground and resumed my journey after 10 minutes. Night stay facilities were also available at Jamnala.

Now, the next destination was Teesri, with 4-5 more km to go. Now the route was through dense forests and there was no problem. Multiple water streams can be found a midway, however, few offer clear water. Now the route is easy and most of the route is straightforward.

Beautiful forest trail to Teesri. Picture Credit : Mayank Kohli

When I was on the trek, many people were undertaking the same journey, most of whom were locals. After about 2 hours, I reached Teesri, which can be located at a distance of about 200 metres. Teesri is a Gujjar settlement.

I had six kilometres more to go and it was already 5 pm. I decided to camp here. It took me a lot of searching to find a decent campsite. However, this campsite turned out to be a bad idea because the wind kept blowing my tent off. And the whole area was inclined towards my tent. I would have to look for accommodation at Teesri. I made Maggi and soup on my own as I had cooking utensils. The night sky view was very mesmerizing.

I woke up at 7 am and resumed my journey after having tea. Now, the path was quite straightforward for about 1 km, passing through rocky paths, forests and then meadows. It was very scenic!

At one point, there were two routes to Churdhar peak. One of them went directly up to the peak. Another went all the way to the temple and then to the peak. The short one was steep and 4 km long and the other one was 7 km. I took the local people’s advice and took the longer route.

On way to Churdhar Summit-Churdhar peak trek-treks in himachal- Indiahikes

The trail again entered dense forests, with a few sources of water. The trail was very different from yesterday; it was a combination of ascents, descents and level walks. I would get slower at steeps inclines and run quickly downhill. Finding the trail wasn’t hard but it was rocky and I had to be careful, lest I slipped.

At around 10 am, I reached a small meadow, where there were two trails – one to the temple and one to the peak. I went over the descending path, which led me to the temple premises within minutes. I washed my feet and hand and offered my prayers in the temple. Then, I had the food (Bhandara or langar) in the Dharamshala.

About an hour later, I left for Churdhar peak, which was 2 km away. I could already see Lord Shiva’s idol, which sits proudly atop the peak. However, I knew this would not be so close. The path to the peak got steeper and steeper.

Come to think of it, there was no trail. There were huge boulders all along and the sight of the peak kept me going. I had to navigate every boulder one by one. It felt a lot like rock climbing.

The last part, which was about half of the path, was very steep. It took me 2 hours to reach the peak. The view there was very beautiful, with clouds all around. I could see no mountain higher than this peak.

After offering my prayers to the intimidating idol of Lord Shiva, I looked for a path directly leading to Teesri (about 3 km away) because a local had told me about this trail. But I couldn’t find it. I had to retrace the same route and walk another 7 km, by the end of which I was exhausted. I reached Jamnala at 4 pm.

Now, I could take two routes to reach Nohradhar – one through a forest, by which I came, and the other by the trail which is used by most locals. I chose the second one to get an idea of all routes but later I regretted my decision as this path was full of rocks and is quite difficult and longer.

I reached Nohradhar at 7 pm only to find out that the last bus to Solan was at 4 pm so I had to spend the night at Nohradhar. There are plenty of options for a night's stay. However, on searching, I found a dormitory, which was much cheaper than other stay options so I chose that one.

I left the next day for Solan.

Things to remember

1. the Last bus from Nohradhar to Solan is at 4 pm and to Rajgarh is at around 6.30 pm. 2. Don’t rely on the ATM in Nohradhar as ATMs here are closed on Sundays and other holidays. 3. From Churdhar Peak to Teesri, there’s a direct path, which saves about 2 hours. Learn about this route from the locals before going on the trek.

This requires a good amount of endurance. You can  begin by jogging everyday .  Start jogging at a slow pace and then keep increasing your pace day by day. Make sure you are able to  jog 4 km in 20 minutes  before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too.

Strength This is another area you should work on. There is a lot of trekking distance that you will cover carrying your backpacks and trekking along with your backpack is not a very easy task.  You have to walk on uneven terrain during the trek. It could be taxing for your legs. For this, strengthening your legs will help. You can do some squats to strengthen them. Do around  3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set .

Flexibility Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises –  stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders  regularly. On your trek, it is important that you arrive on the slopes with your muscles relaxed. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek.

Working out indoors If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

Travelling is an important element of our lives, and people who do not travel do not live fully. Our objective is never a location but rather a new approach to discovering things, and trekking is thrilling, and there is a saying that "the finest vistas come after the hardest climbs." So, let's talk about the Churdhar trek, which is one of Shimla's most intriguing hikes. In this article, our experts will provide you with all the Churdhar trek details - Churdhar trek itinerary, Churdhar trekking distance, Churdhar trek location, and much more. Scroll through to know more about this awesome adventure.

Introduction

The Churdhar peak is the tallest mountain in the Himalayan range outside of the Himalayas. Churi-Chandni-Dhar is another name for this summit. Locals think Shri Chureshwar or Shirgul Maharaj resided here in ancient times; hence it is called after them. The panoramic views from the peak are breathtaking. Kinner Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and the Dhauladhar Range are among the Himalayan peaks seen from the top. The Gangetic basin, the Sutlej River, Shimla, Chail, Kufri, Kasauli, and Chakrata can all be seen from the peak.

The path from Nauradhar is the most popular of the three approaches to the top. It takes around three hours to drive from Kasauli to Nauradhar. This cab service is also included in the package. After arriving at Nauradhar, lunch will be served and free the rest of the day. The majority of visitors choose to spend the day in this town. The Churdhar Trek begins the next morning shortly after breakfast.

Churdhar Trip's initial 1 km is a somewhat difficult trek with a steep, rocky, and muddy environment. Beyond that, the trip becomes easier with a regular ascent through dense pine woods that leads to a lovely meadow where the day's campground is surrounded by cedar and pine trees scurrying quietly as if to sing you a lullaby to sleep. The final portion of the walk is a hard moraine hike. Still, because a 56-square-kilometre forest sanctuary encircles the summit, you can take in the panoramic vista of lush green forest with the Greater Himalayas in the distance.

  • End Point: Phalhi
  • Distance: 32 km
  • Location: Himachal Pradesh
  • Height: 12,000 ft
  • Difficulty Level: Easy To Moderate

How To Reach The Churdhar Trek?

Chandigarh and Dehradun have the closest airports. Taxis and buses are readily accessible in Nohradhar.

‍ The starting point is New Delhi, India's capital, from where one may travel by rail to Chandigarh (250 km) or Kalka (280 km). Taxis and buses are readily accessible in Nohradhar.

‍ To get to Sarain, the beginning point of the Churdhar trek, buses and taxis are available from Chopal. If you're travelling from Delhi, take the National Highway 1 (NH1) to Ambala, then the National Highway 22 to Shimla. Follow NH 22 from Shimla to Kinnaur, passing Sanjauli and Dhali to Theog. When you arrive at Theog, take the state road to Chopal, passing via Sainj, Deha, and Khirki. Follow the route to Nerwa from Chopal, then the link road to Sarain after almost 7 kilometres.

Churdhar Trek Distance From Delhi -

‍ If you travel from Delhi, you must first stop in Nohradhar, a hamlet on the Solan-Rajghat-Sangrah route. From Delhi to Nohradhar, the journey is around 390 kilometres, with a 20-kilometre ascent. The landscape along this road is breathtaking, and it will revitalise your mind and spirit.

Churdhar Trek Distance From Chandigarh -

‍ If you begin your travel in Chandigarh, the distance from Chandigarh to Nohradhar is 130 kilometres. You may also take a bus from ISBT Sector 17 in Chandigarh. It will take around 4.5 hours to get there, after which you may begin walking through a pine forest. It's a truly amazing experience.

Churdhar Trek Distance From Shimla -

‍ You can start your journey from Shimla by using the Chaupal-Saharan route. Despite the short distance, this route is difficult due to the first steep path. You can discover a midway shelter from Saharan where you can enjoy some pleasant snacks and lunch.

Churdhar Trek Itinerary

Day 1: chandigarh to nauradhar (2175 m) (130 km) and trek to jam nallah (2855 m) (7 km).

At 6:30 a.m., you will be picked up from the Chandigarh Bus Stand. Take a bus to Nauradhar, the beginning point for the Churdhar walk. The first section is a difficult rise through muddy terrain.

After that, steadily ascend through pine woodland till you reach Jam Nallah, your today's campsite. The entire area is encircled by cedar and pine trees. After that, you may retire for the night with some delectable snacks and cuisine.

Day 2: Jam Nallah to Churdhar peak (3655 m) (9 km) and return (9 km)

Because this is a long trekking day, get up early. To get to Teesri, which is at the height of 3250 meters, climb steadily for 5 kilometres via forest cover.

Several businesses along the mountain’s crest at Teesri, which is the windiest spot on the entire hike. The treeline begins to disappear after crossing Teesri. The peak is 1 km distant, and a 2-kilometre climb will take you to Chureshwar temple.

You’ll be rewarded with breath-taking panorama views of high Himalayan peaks such as Kinner Kailash, Srikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath, and Badrinath when you reach the summit. After spending some time there, head back to the campsite and arrive in the evening.

Day 3: Jam Nallah to Nauradhar (7 km) and drive to Chandigarh (130 km)

After breakfast, depart for Nauradhar by following the same route as Day 1. Arrive at Nauradhar and board the scheduled car for Chandigarh.

In the vicinity of Chandigarh, the Churdhar Trek (3,647 m) is a spiritual journey for the ideal weekend retreat. From April through November, Broza adventures provides trips to this beautiful walk. The Indian state of Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district is home to Churdhar, situated at a height of 3,647m (11,965ft). The highest peak in the Sirmaur district and the highest peak in the outer Himalayas are found there.

A deodar-roofed temple of Lord Shirgul Devta with a lingam dedicated to Lord Shiva is located below the top (Chudeshwar Mahadev). For the locals of Sirmaur, Chaupal, and Solan, this temple holds a special place in their hearts.

Churdhar is sometimes called "Chur Chandani," which means moonlit mountain. There are three ways to approach the summit: via Nauradhar (16 km from Sirmaur), Sarain (8 km from Chaupal, Shimla), and Pulhwal (8 km) (Chaupal, Shimla).

The most well-known one is from Nauradhar in the Sirmour area, with lovely rest stops in between and a spectacular view all around. It is a location of immense religious significance in the state's Sirmaur district. A colossal statue of Lord Shiva that towers over Churdhar Peak is enthralling to look at and transports you to the stories of ancient Indian epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Churdhar Trek is one of the most thrilling treks around Shimla. Beautiful views of the Dhauladhar, the Greater Himalayas, and some large peaks in Uttarakhand, such as Swargarohini (6,252 m), Bandarpoonch, and others, can be seen on a clear, bright day (6,316 m), Kedarnath (6,940 m), and Badrinath (7,138 m).

Best Time To Do Churdhar Trek

Churdhar begins with steep inclines and has a moderately difficult ascent and descent. The ideal months to hike these pathways are May, June, October, and November. This journey qualifies as a pre-and post-monsoon season excursion because of the unfavorable temperatures and precipitation. The average temperature during the daytime ranges between 25 and 15 degrees Celsius, but the overnight low is substantially lower.

If you are searching for a nice weekend trek in Himachal that doesn’t make your knees toil too much and still takes you up a mountain top having a respectable altitude and a breathtaking view then look no further than the Churdhar trek.

Located in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, the Churdhar peak, which at around 3600 meters, is the highest mountain peak of the outer Himalayas and attracts hundreds of trekkers and mountain-lovers each year.

Recently, I with some of my friends headed for Churdhar to have some quality time in the mountains far away from the city’s madness and to give ourselves a break from the daily grind. We returned as blissful as anybody could be after living in the mountains, even if it means being there for just two days.

Anyway, here I am listing out some of the top reasons why Churdhar is a popular paradise for trekkers and why you too can do it too:

1. A perfect weekend trek

Churdhar trek

You can complete this trek in flat two days without requiring too many office leaves. The trek starting point is Nauradhar, which is around 130 kms from Chandigarh. If you start early, you can reach Nauradhar after crossing Kumarhatti on Chandigarh-Shimla road, and Rajgarh in Solan district, in around three hours. If you start your trek say by 9 am, you can easily reach the top around sunset, stay there for the night and return next morning to first Nauradhar and then head back to wherever you had come from.

2. An easy trek

Churdhar trek

Another nice thing about this trek is that it’s a comparatively easy trek. And when I say easy I don’t mean easy like walk in a park but I mean that it’s not that difficult and you can do it with some little effort. Except the last few steep patches, the trail is a delight to walk on. But of course, you have to be in a fit condition to do any trek including this one. By the way, George Everest, the British surveyor, had also hiked the Churdhar peak and done readings of the Himalayan mountains from here in 1834. The Mount Everest has been named in his honour. May be this little fact will work as an inspiration for some.

3. A beautiful trek

Churdhar trek

Though located in the outer Himalayas, this trek nonetheless has natural beauty in abundance. On the trail, you cross amazing dense forest and get around some of the biggest and heaviest rocks and boulders you ever seen.

And from the top, the view of various mountain ranges will simply take your breath away. I mean it. You can see many mountains including the Shrikhand Mahadev peak standing there majestically. A 56-square kilometer wildlife sanctuary, the Churdhar sanctuary, is an added attraction of this trek. You can also spot various species of birds and some animals on your way up.

4. You can do it on a shoestring budget

Churdhar trek

It’s one trek that doesn’t require any mountain guides until and unless you have zero experience in trekking. You just need to know the way up and just walk on. Moreover, you also don’t have to worry about where to spend the night and what to eat as there is a rest house near the top built for the visitors. The place remains opens most of the time of the year except during winter time when the top gets buried in heavy snow. So basically, you just spend on your travel and a nominal amount on food and stay.

5. A winter’s trek

Churdhar trek

For seasoned trekkers and those who want a little bit extra adventure, Churdhar is an ideal winter trek. It doesn’t snow here too much as the altitude is not that high, making Churdhar trek a perfect destination. Many trekkers with prior experience opt to do Churdhar trek in winters only. But if you don’t have any good trekking experience then you should do this trek in winters with help from professional mountain guides.

6. A trekker’s pilgrimage

Churdhar trek

Churdhar peak has spiritual and religious significance also. Long before Churdhar became popular and trekkers started walking on this trail, the Churdhar peak was and continues to be visited by locals to pay their obeisance to Shirgul Maharaj, a deity, and worshipped as Lord Shiva. Every year during monsoons, hundreds of devotees from Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla and many areas of nearby Uttarakhand reach the peak and there is almost a fair-like atmosphere here. So if you are a spiritually bent person, then it’s a must trek for you.

Mitchell announced publicly that he’d been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2020 in an interview with People.

“The moment that they told us it was [ALS], it was like I was in my own movie,” Mitchell told the publication. “That’s what it felt like, like I was watching that scene where someone is being told that they have a terminal illness. It was just a complete disbelief, a shock.”

Mitchell played three Klingon characters in Star Trek: Discovery’ s first two seasons. He portrayed Kol in Season 1, Kol-Sha and Tenavik in Season 2. In Season 3, as the disease progressed, he played Aurellio, a character who used a hoverchair, created to incorporate his need for a wheelchair, into the series.

He also voiced three characters in the first season of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 1, a black ops operative and a Romulan guard.

StarTrek.com also posted a tribute to Mitchell.

“Being a part of Star Trek keeps me inspired and gives me purpose,” Mitchell told Syfy Wire in 2020. “Hopefully, that will keep going.”

Mitchell is survived by his wife, Susan, their children, Lilah and Kallum, his parents and in-laws and several nieces and nephews.

The family asks that any gifts be directed toward ALS research or toward his children. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the children.

Why captain shaw was only nice to geordi in star trek: picard season 3.

Captain Liam Shaw had no time for Admiral Picard and Captain Riker in Star Trek: Picard, but he geeked out over meeting Commodore Geordi La Forge.

  • Captain Shaw respects Geordi La Forge, but has no patience for Picard and Riker on the Titan.
  • Shaw's prickly attitude towards Picard and Riker stems from past trauma with the Borg and losing crew members.
  • Despite his "Spock dead" status, there are hopes for Liam Shaw to return in a Star Trek: Legacy spinoff.

Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) had little patience for Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but he geeked out over meeting Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton). When Admiral Picard receives a distress call from Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), he recruits his former First Officer Riker to mount a rescue mission. Realizing they need a ship, the two then hijack Riker's former command, the USS Titan-A, much to the annoyance of its current Captain, Liam Shaw.

When Picard and Riker first board the Titan, Shaw realizes that they are up to something. Shaw has no reverence for Picard and Riker's status as Starfleet legends, and he comes across as rude and dismissive. Picard's rescue mission quickly turns deadly, as the Titan faces off against the Changeling Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and her powerful warship, the Shrike. Shaw just wants to protect his crew , and he grows increasingly frustrated as the Titan suffers more and more damage. However, when Liam meets Commodore La Forge for the first time, his attitude completely changes.

star-trek-legacy-why-liam-shaw-must-return

10 Reasons Star Trek: Legacy Needs Captain Shaw Back

Why geordi was the only star trek: tng crew member captain shaw was nice to, liam's introduction to geordi is vastly different from his prickly first meeting with picard and riker..

When Commodore Geordi La Forge arrives on the Titan, Captain Shaw greets him with an uncharacteristic deference, clearly somewhat star-struck to be meeting one of his heroes. As a self-proclaimed "grease monkey," Shaw looks up to Geordi La Forge as one of the most legendary engineers in Starfleet. Plus, one of Geordi's daughters, Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), serves under Shaw's command on the Titan as the ship's helmsman. Shaw respects Sidney as a member of his crew and Liam's hero worship of Geordi La Forge was likely a factor in recruiting his daughter as the Titan's pilot.

Before Shaw began pursuing the command track, he served as an engineer aboard the USS Constance, during which time he was involved in the devastating Battle of Wolf 359.

The events of Star Trek: Picard season 3 prove that Captain Shaw was right to be wary of Picard and Riker when they first arrived on his ship. Not only did their presence cause massive damage to the Titan, but Shaw lost crew members in the fight with Vadic. Liam Shaw suffered multiple injuries, was forced to face his past trauma with the Borg, and ultimately sacrificed his life to save Picard and his friends. It's no wonder then, that he didn't want them on his ship. Geordi, however, had no part in Picard's original plan, and he even initially refused to help his former captain. La Forge calls out Picard for his reckless behavior, something Shaw undoubtedly appreciates.

Shaw Will Come Back If Star Trek: Picard’s Legacy Spinoff Happens

Liam shaw is only "spock dead," after all, not dead dead..

Captain Liam Shaw from Star Trek: Picard.

Despite his death in the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Picard season 3, showrunner Terry Matalas and actor Todd Stashwick have both confirmed that Liam Shaw will return if Star Trek: Legacy happens. With its reunion of the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation cast, Picard season 3 became a runaway success that had many fans clamoring for a spin-off. Although the Picard season 3 finale provided the perfect setup for a spin-off, the long-rumored Star Trek: Legacy remains little more than a hope. However, many of the cast and crew, including Stashwick, have said they would love to return for more Star Trek stories.

Shaw has a rich backstory to draw from.

Stashwick has referred to his character as "Spock dead," reassuring fans that, just like Leonard Nimoy's Spock in Star Trek: The Search for Spock , plans have always been in place for Shaw to return. Although the exact plan for Shaw's return from the dead remains unknown, the curmudgeonly captain certainly has more stories to tell. With his complicated history with the Borg and the Battle of Wolf 359, as well as his contentious relationship with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Shaw has a rich backstory to draw from. However Shaw returns to the world of the living, many fans will undoubtedly rejoice to see more of Star Trek: Picard's lovable "dip**** from Chicago."

Star Trek: Picard is available to stream on Paramount+.

When Gene Roddenberry began developing the screenplay for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1975, expectations for how a science fiction film could look and feel were rapidly shifting. "2001: A Space Odyssey" offered moviegoers a 70mm trip to outer space, while "The Omega Man," "Soylent Green," and the "Planet of the Apes" series fed off the sociopolitical tumult of the times to thrust audiences into dystopian futures of our own foolish making.

Where did a show that was, at its core, a dream of racially and ethnically inclusive space exploration fit in an era of consciousness-raising spectacle and pessimistic earthbound forecasting? Though the series had failed to enthrall a sizable enough viewership to survive more than three seasons during its initial run on NBC in the late 1960s, "Star Trek" had become popular in syndication with 1970s couch potatoes. There was clearly a hunger for more, and there weren't any movies that hit its brainy/pulpy/hopeful sweet spot.

Then "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" happened. By the time "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" commenced principal photography on August 7, 1978, director Robert Wise and his creative team had a new, toweringly high bar to clear both narratively and visually.

Were they successful? We're still having that debate ( though most hardcore Trekkers have come around on the movie ), but at the time of its release on December 7, 1979, the majority of critics and paying moviegoers could agree that the visual effects were stunning. That Douglas Trumbull, who'd revolutionized optical effects with "2001: A Space Odyssey," would ace this assignment was hardly surprising. But delivering that awe wasn't the smoothest of processes behind the scenes . In fact, one pivotal sequence was almost a cheesy-looking disaster until Trumbull fixed it at the last second.

A completely unusable sequence in a post-Star Wars world

In a 2019 interview with TrekMovie.com , Trumbull revealed that Spock's spacewalk sequence, wherein he makes contact with mysterious entity V'Ger, was initially shot by Wise. When Trumbull (who, as the special photographic effects director, would be on the hook for all of the visuals in the film) took a look at the scene, he was appalled. As Trumbull told TrekMovie:

"I thought the whole thing just looked completely unusable and just not serviceable at all. Badly lit, badly designed, and it just looked like guys hanging on wires. And this was before the more present-day of wire removal and a lot of stuff we could do digitally. They just didn't pay any attention to weightlessness or any of the things associated with that."

Trumbull, whose integral contributions to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" had recently earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects (which he lost to the "Star Wars" team), immediately asked Wise a serious question. For a film with a then-massive $44 million budget, Trumbull couldn't allow something this clunkily old school to make the final cut. So, with time running out in post-production, he asked Wise to let him reshoot the entire scene. How would Wise, who had two Best Director Oscars on his shelf (for "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music"), react to such a bold request?

A last-second save that might've rescued the film from infamy

Some directors would've bristled at such a big ask, but Wise, who'd worked with Trumbull on 1971's "The Andromeda Strain," had no qualms with handing the scene over to the visual effects pioneer. Per Trumbull:

"[B]ob just had tremendous trust in me to just go ahead and do whatever I felt was necessary to get the movie done. And he was not comfortable with visual effects, we didn't have much of a dialogue about it. We redesigned and re-imagined the entire spacewalk sequence with Spock. He saw the storyboards and he knew what we were doing but it was quite a challenge to put that whole thing together in such a short period of time."

As someone ancient enough to have seen the film during its first theatrical run, I remember being stunned by Trumbull's work on this set piece and the film in general. 45 years later, I think it's still effective in the context of the movie, though I imagine younger viewers will probably wince at the optical-ness of these outmoded effects. So be it. Most would agree it beats the trousers off most of "The Next Generation" flicks .

Trumbull's achievement was impressive enough at the time to earn him another Best Visual Effects nomination at the Oscars. Alas, he lost in a very competitive year to "Alien" (which also beat out "1941," "The Black Hole" and "Moonraker"). Though Trumbull never won a competitive Oscar, he did earn a Scientific and Engineering Oscar in 1993 for designing the CP-65 Showscan Camera System and a Gordon E. Sawyer Award in 2012. He was also worshiped by every movie buff who grew up dazzled by his pioneering effects, so he was far from an unsung genius.
