How to get to Pilsner Urquell Brewery from Prague by train? Czech Republic has one of the best railway networks in Europe. So, the transportation from Prague to Pilsen is quite easy by a direct train connection from Prague Main Railway station (Hlavní Nádraží) or Prague Smíchov station. Pilsner Urquell Brewery is situated 400 meters from the Pilsen Main Railway Station (Plzeň Hlavní nádraží). You can walk, just follow the sign "Plzeňský Pivovar".

Trains from Prague to Pilsen run several times a day. The journey takes about 90 minutes. Train ticket costs for one way (Prague to Pilsen) US$7 or you can buy the return ticket which is cheaper than two one way tickets. Based on my recent experience, I highly recommend adding a seat ticket to your ticket, because the trains from Pilsen to Prague are very popular and you definitely don't want to stand in the aisle for more than an hour.

4.1 History of Pilsner Urquell Brewery

Pilsner beer wasn´t always so tasty as today.

Beer has been brewed in Plzeň since 1295 when the King Václav II. gave to 260 Pilsner burghers the right to brew the beer. This privilege, a very profitable financially, allowed the holder to sell beer in his house.

Pilsners had been making beer without the necessary education and knowledge and often improving the tastes by variety of ingredients. No wonder, that the quality of beer was really horrible!

This lead to an unusual theatre: 36 barrels of disgusting Pilsner beer was poured out in front of Pilsen City Hall in February 1838.

The owners of the right to brew beer joined together and choose a place for constructions of a new brewery: a place with sandstone underground for deep cellars and with a rich water source. The construction started in 1839. Then they hired a German brewer Josef Groll to prepare German style lager beer. The taste of new brewed beer was extraordinary! Probably because of unique Plzeň water. It was the year 1842 when the legendary Pilsner Beer was born.

Coopers of Pilsner Urquell Brewery produce small and also huge beer barrels (of the size 4.000 liters) which serve for storage of Pilsner lager beer in cellars of Pilsner Urquell Brewery. You can see these barrels during the Pilsner Brewery tour. And we hope that this tradition will be included to UNESCO intangible cultural heritage soon.

Nowadays, Pilsner Urquell Brewery is the biggest producer of beer in the Czech Republic.

#2 Restaurant and brewery Beer Factory

The new microbrewery and restaurant Beer Factory was built in the old town house located on the corner of Dominikánská and Veleslavínova Street, just a few steps from the Plzeň Republic Square. The restaurant serves typical Czech food as Svíčková, Venison, burgers and steaks, the great advantage of this place is garden in inner courtyard.

Architects succeeded to connect an old architecture with modern clean industrial style: dominants are walls without painting and materials as iron, steel and wood. The beer club and the biggest part of all technologies are concentrated in the cellar, but the main bar with two brew houses are in the ground floor.

The brewery offers several kinds of own beer including top fermented beer (called ale) but it imports also fine beer from Belgium as Kasteel Rouge or Gulden Draak.

The brewery is very popular among tourists, for Friday evening you will need a reservation.

• Description

90 kilometers west of Prague lies the city of Pilsen which became famous for its developed industry and it is a home of the most famous beer in the world! The famous Pilsner lager. It is the 4th largest town in the Czech Republic and it has about 170 000 inhabitants. It is the industrial, cultural and trading center of western bohemia region. In the 19th century in the times of industrial revolution some of the biggest industry companies were founded there. The mechanical engineering complex of Skoda factories and brewery of Pilsner Urquell.

In the year 2015 Pilsen became the main European city of culture.

Skoda factories

Were founded in 1859 by duke Arnost Valdstejn but 6 years later it was bought by its main engineer Emil Škoda in 1866 and it soon grew into one of the largest metal and engineering factories in the whole Austia-Hungarian empire. Originally it used to make for example devices for breweries, sugar factories, mines, steam factories, bridge constructions, or railroad devices. Before and during WW1 Skoda focused mainly on the weapon industry and it became the biggest producer of it in the whole empire. Did you know that Skoda was producing all the cannons and artillery for Austria-Hungary battleships? After WW1 Skoda was facing bankruptcy because of no need for military devices so it had to change its production focus and so they did. Skoda started to make trains, engines, cars, ships and at the end of 1920s Skoda was employing more than 35 000 people. In 1925 Skoda bought a famous czech car factory Laurin and Clement and Prague airplane factory Avia in 1929. During WW2 Skoda had to produce weapons again for Nazis and in 1945 was heavily bombed. 70% of the Pilsen factory was destroyed in March. Also the car factory in Mlada Boleslav was bombed by the Red army. During communism Skoda became a state owned factory and it had to change its name to “Factories of V.I. Lenin” but because nobody knew that brand its sales were plummeting and the government decided to change its name back to Skoda. During communism Skoda was producing buses,trams, heavy industry devices, powerplant devices and a lot of locomotives. Pilsner Urquell

The town brewery of pilsen was first mentioned in 1501. Did you know that in 1838 the beer quality of the local brewery was so bad that it led to a mob of Pilsen locals spilling 36 barrels of beer in front of Pilsen town hall? It led the town hall to think about it and they decided to found a new brewery of Pilsen in 1839. They invited a brewmaster from Germany Mr. Josef Groll and on the 5th of October he brewed a brand new type of beer which today is known around the world as Pilsner lager. Today it is the most favourite beer in Czechia and it is shipped all around the world. Today 60% of the world beer production is inspired by the recipe of Pilsner Urquell lager. It has 4.4% alcohol content and a crisp full body with creamy foam. Come with us to Pilsen to see it with your own eyes! Yes! The Original Tour is very informative, and your children will enjoy it, too. However, we don't serve beer to anyone under the legal drinking age (18 years), but don't worry - two non-alcoholic beverages are available instead.

Our Tapster Academy and Beer Sommelier Dinner are reserved for adults only.

We serve hot and cold food both in the Výčep U Zvonu and at the end of The Original Tour in the Beer Hall. The well tapped Pilsner Urquell beer is of course matched with well-known classics of Czech gastronomy such as freshly mixed beef tartare with fried bread, fried cauliflower, or Pilsner goulash. But you can also find other specialties here. You can order a great strudel with your coffee or traditional sweet buns with vanilla custard. Enjoy.
