If you’re in a hurry and don’t really want to read over the detailed advice below. Here are, in our experience, the best Blue Mountains tours currently available in 2024.

  • Best Blue Mountains tour for backpackers – Wildlife Tours offers a good mix stops, some hiking and a later start!
  • Best Blue Mountains tour for photography – Picture Me’s small group tour is perfect
  • Best Family tour to the Blue Mountains – With 3 rides and an animal park FJ Tours is a great choice
  • Best Budget Traveller tour of the Blue Mountains – You can’t beat the Blue Mountains Explorer for value
  • Best tour for adventurers – Go beyond the main sites and explore Empress Canyon on an abseiling and canyoning adventure.

Read on for full notes on each tour and a few more below.

Let’s start with the basics!

You might have noticed that most itineraries of Sydney mention a visit to the Blue Mountains. Is it by far the most popular day tour from Sydney, for locals and tourists alike. So, what then makes it so popular?

Well, to start:

  • The Blue Mountains is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – it joined the register in 2000
  • There are ten national parks featuring waterfalls, sheer sandstone cliffs and vast regions of dense forest.
  • Pretty mountain villages, full of cute shops and excellent cafes, are dotted along the cliff tops.
  • The Blue Mountains is as encapsulating as, but a stark contrast to, Sydney’s iconic harbour and beaches and only a relatively short distance away.

The central town of the Mountains is Katoomba, which is approximately 120km west of the city. To reach the key sites, you will spend approximately 2 hours on the road from Sydney.

While it is possible to explore the mountains by public transport, it is not the best option for everyone. For some travellers, tours are the best choice.

  • Tours are perfect if you have not had time to research things to see and do in the Blue Mountains.
  • Tours are great if you only have limited time to see the region as you won’t waste time working out how to get from A to B.
  • Going on a tour is a good idea if you want to go hiking . If you are not experienced in hiking or bushwalking as we call it here, a tour can give you the confidence to take a walk in the forest and see more than you might if you go it alone.
  • Tour companies spend considerable time putting together itineraries that will meet visitors’ needs, whether you are a photographer or an adventure traveller. Their experience will mean you get to the right parts of the mountain for your needs.

If you love research as much as I do or travel on a budget, I have written a guide to help you have a fabulous day in the Blue Mountains using public transport . And another with three self-drive itineraries . You need to be a bit more organised if you choose these options.

You can find a tour to suit every type of traveller:

  • Tours with limited amounts of walking that to stop briefly at the key attractions to take photos
  • In-depth tours that provide detailed information on flora and fauna of the region
  • Hop on hop off tours with the option to choose to spend extra time in the places that interest you most
  • Tours for adventurers that including canyoning or abseiling
  • Tours that include a couple of hours hiking as part of the itinerary
  • Tours with an indigenous focus
  • Four wheel drive tours

These are the questions we commonly see in our Sydney Expert Facebook Group . If you have a question, we have not covered pop over to the group and ask us!

How long does the average Blue Mountains tour last?

Tours usually run for between 9-12 hours. Most tours leave the city by 8.30 am and return at about 6 pm, although there are exceptions!

What is the difference between the small group tours and the larger tour buses?

Tours operate on either full-size buses or minibuses (often 18-21 seats). Minibuses can get around the mountains more efficiently. Having smaller groups means less time to load everyone on and off the bus at each stop, so generally, these are my preference unless you need better seating for the long drive.

What stops are usually included in a Blue Mountains day tour?

While all tours are slightly different, the majority include the following stops.

  • Echo Point – home of the Three Sisters, the iconic Blue Mountains landmark
  • One or two Blue Mountains villages – either Katoomba or Leura are usually included in most day tours
  • Featherdale Wildlife Park – Many tours make their first stop at Featherdale on the way up to the mountains. About an hour west of Sydney, this relatively small animal park offers a chance to get up close and personal with a full range of native Aussie animals. I am a big fan of Featherdale, and it makes sense to visit it on the way if you have not had your fill of kangaroos and koalas. However, it cuts into your time in the mountains, so you need to be aware of that. The usual time spent here is about an hour.
  • Scenic World  is included in many tours.   Entry to the 3 “rides” here, the railway, skyway and the cableway is usually an optional extra although a small number include it in the cost. If your tour takes all three rides, then it can cut into your time exploring the bushland, as the queues here can be significant. Some tours stop here and allow you to choose one or all of the rides. Others include a bush walk at the base of Scenic World and the railway back to the top.
  • Some tours return to Sydney via Olympic Park and the transfer passengers to a ferry to cruise back to the city.

Ask yourself the following questions before you choose your tour.

Do you want to spend 1 hour at the wildlife park?

If you have already been to the zoo or seen Aussie animals in other places, then you might prefer a tour that does not spend an hour at Featherdale.

Do you want to spend time bushwalking in the mountains?

Lots of tours spend only 30-45 mins walking in the bush. Others offer a walking opportunity in a couple of places. Make sure you find the right fit for you.

Do you want meals included?

A sit-down lunch can eat into your time exploring, and depending on the tour, it can be pretty pedestrian and not a highlight of your day.

Do you need to book ahead?

If you are visiting in December or January, it is advisable to book your tour in advance as tours sell out. Week day tours are limited at present, so booking is the best way to be certain you will not miss out. Most tours offer a 24 hour cancellation period.

Should you add a Jenolan Caves visit into your day?

Short answer – no! If you only have one day, a Jenolan Caves tour, it will mean your time enjoying the Blue Mountains themselves will be very short. However, they are a great addition to a two-day itinerary.

Our favourite tours in the Blue Mountains are predominantly small group tours catering to between 6-24 guests. The smaller numbers on these tours allow you to get on and off more quickly. I believe tours on larger buses are not the best way to experience this area unless you do the HOHO bus and explore on foot in between stops.

Blue Mountains All Inclusive Tour – Anderson Tours

Duration : 12 hours  | Max group size : 20 | Book this tour

Limited to between 12-20 passengers and using excellent guides, this 12 hour tour covers a lot of ground, but you don’t feel too rushed. Travel is on a modern vehicle with wi-fi and all costs are included in your initial tour price.

The Three Sisters walking track

Unlike most tours, this one visits Featherdale on the way home, when there are fewer groups are at the park. You make your return to Sydney by ferry from Parramatta, which for most of the year gives you a harbour sunset on the way home.

The tour includes:

  • Guided admission  into Scenic World  – included in your tour cost.
  • Guided rainforest walk
  • Lunch is included (can cater for vegan and gluten-free guests)
  • Access to unique lookouts away from large groups
  • Interactive experience with native Australian animals at Featherdale Wildlife Park or Western Sydney Zoo
  • Return river cruise into Sydney Harbour

This tour is top-rated and often books out in advance. There is no minimum age (however, they can only take one pram on each bus, so please check when booking if you need to take a pram) Anderson offers 8 pick up spots around the CBD.

Blue Mountains Scenic Day Tour with Cruise – FJ Tours

Duration : 10 hours  | Average group size : 20 | Book this tour

Another great operator, FJ Tours , has been running successful tours for almost 20 years. They rate highly on TripAdvisor and offer several alternatives so you can decide which things you want to add or leave out of your tour.

Blue Mountains Tour Scenic World Skyway

Their 10 hour Blue Mountains day tour includes:

  • Short guided bush walk
  • Entry to Featherdale Wildlife Park
  • Fantasea River Cruise from Parramatta to Circular Quay or Darling Harbour

Blue Mountains Hop on Hop Off Explorer Bus

Duration : 8 hours  | Number of stops : 37 | Book this tour

The HOHO Bus has recently had a makeover, and they have added extra stops, reduced the time between buses and announced that kids will now ride free!

Blue Mountains HOHO red bus

The HOHO allows you to reduce the total cost of your day in the mountains by taking public transport from Sydney to Katoomba .

• Unlimited hop on hop off all-day • Live Commentary • Full-colour Guide Book with maps and walking guides • Extend your pass FREE when staying in the Blue Mountains (Up to 3 days) • 37 Stops • 45 Minute frequency (This is the perfect time for each stop)

These tours allow you to set your own pace and choose the things you want to spend most time seeing.

They also offer a Boomerang Pass that is a single 90-minute loop, a great option for anyone not up to much walking or those who want an overview of the sites.

The ticket comes with an excellent guidebook that lists information about the area and the various bush walks available from each stop. The bus drivers get fantastic feedback for their informative commentary and regularly go out of their way to make sure the passengers are happy.

Scenic Railway Blue Mountains Tour

You can buy just the HOHO ticket or add Scenic World entry , saving you time queuing when you arrive. This is a really good idea in summer when lines can be long at the ticket offices.

Sunset Tour with 2 Hours of Bushwalking – Wildlife Tours

I have always liked how Wildlife Tours do things differently and offer experiences others don’t. Their Blue Mountains tour is no exception.

Blue Mountains Sunset Tour with Wildlife Tours

This ten-hour tour leaves the city after the peak hour rush, making it perfect for anyone who is not keen on rising early. Staying in the mountains until after sunset gives you a chance to watch the afternoon light change over the bushland and capture beautiful photos of a Three Sisters sunset.

Blue Mountains Waterfalls, Walks, and Sunset Tour

If you like the idea of the afternoon Blue Mountains tour but would like to focus on photography , this is a brilliant choice. The 10-hour tour with a later start means you will be in the mountains for both golden hour and sunset at the Three Sisters. With groups set at a maximum of 8 people, there is no time wasted getting people on and off the bus. There are options to take two bushwalks to Wentworth Falls and Leura Cascades or, if you prefer, spending some time at Scenic World.

Lyrebird Dell with its small but pretty waterfall in the Blue Mountains

If you want to experience the Blue Mountains by getting off the beaten track, read on. This unique tour will allow you to explore part of the mountains not covered on most other tours. With several stops, you will take some short guided bush walks to beautiful lookouts, waterfalls, and famous landmarks.

Great tips, sometimes it is more convenient to book a tour rather than self-explore and its always god to have recommended options!

Blue Mountains have been on our bucket list forever! We’d love to hike in the area, and it’s perfect for us because there are so many national parks: 10 in the same area? It’s fabulous! Thank you for the useful tips!

I have always wanted to go to the Blue Mountains and the worse thing is that I am Australian and not yet made it there. I never knew that there were so many Blue Mountains tours available but I suppose it a stunning place. You have some great trips there and I like that you have broken it down to things to consider especially in regards to visiting the zoo and bushwalking.

Wow, the Blue Mountains sound like an amazing place to visit. The day hike sounds perfect for us as we love to explore!

Thanks for all the handy tips on how to visit this area and what tours are available. Australia is on my list and I’d love to see this part of the country.

I would love to visit the Blue Mountains, but I doubt I would take a tour. Can you do this all on your own?

We’re taking one on the 26th! My in-laws booked it so I’m not sure which one it is, but I’m excited!

Love to hear how it goes!

The Blue Mountains.. heard a lot about them so it must really be worth doing the tour! Gosh they are gentle giants aren’t they… I can just imagine the photo’s that you could capture from above.

I remember our Blue Mountains tour guide vey well. though we went over a decade ago. He was quite an authority on Australia, not just the Blue Mountains. It was such a fantastic experience, all because of him.

Blue Mountains is indeed a treasure trove of experiences. I think your post is valuable in helping first-time visitors optimize their Blue Mountain experience. The sheer range of activities and experiences available there may be confusing and help of knowlegable sources is always welcome.

That is why some travellers who have not had time to plan or read about the area do find a tour works out best for them.

Imagine the images you could get with a drone! As much as I hate the noise they make it would be amazing.

Do you know of any Blue Mountain Tours that will pick up from a cruise ship docked @ White Bay Cruise Terminal? Most of the tours seem to pick up only from the hotels. There is one company called Shore Trips & Tours HQed in New Zealand that I found online. I would appreciate it if you replied to my email address.

Hi Sue As far as I know, there are no group tour operators who pick up at White Bay. You may be able to get a small group operator who will make pick up there if there are a few of you making a booking. It would be best to contact them directly. I am unaware of the company you mentioned.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I’m inclined to meet one of the highly rated tour groups in the CBD – just need to check the Ferry Schedule to see how early they run.

Do you think it’s better to take a tour with Featherdale first thing in the morning, or a tour that has Featherdale in the afternoon? Obviously, if the tour has Featherdale in the morning, then Scenic World would be later (and possibly more crowded).

This is a hard one Vince – I prefer the return because I like to get to the mountains before the crowds. If you have seen Australian animals then I actually prefer tours that don’t stop there at all.

The Blue Mountains look like a lovely day trip from Sydney. Course now, I need to get to Australia first!

Hello. What tour would you recommend that gives you more time to walk around the bottom of scenic world where you get off the railway? Really enjoyed reading all your comments by the way, very helpful

You don’t really need a lot of time to walk the official boardwalk at Scenic World. If you want to walk outside Scenic World in the park then I would use the Blue Mountains Hop on hop off bus.

Very good read. Been to Australia last year specifically to Port Macquarie and I had the most wonderful time.

hello! this will be my first time and i love adventure and i want to spend the most time off the path seeing the animals in the wild. which tour would you suggest?

There is not a lot of chance of seeing significant numbers of animals in the wild on most of these group tours. You may see some kangaroos and birds etc but I would suggest one of this four wheel drive tour https://sydneyexpert.travelloapp.com/australia/sydney/blue-mountains-off-the-beaten-track-4wd-day-adventure

Alternatively of the group tours the sunset one would be my pick https://sydneyexpert.travelloapp.com/australia/sydney/blue-mountains-sunset-tour

Is there any day tour do not visit any animal park or zoo.

Best Blue Mountains Tours & Day Trips

Rising up from Sydney ’s western suburbs, yet a world away from the bustling streets of the city, the Blue Mountains are home to some of the most spectacular alpine scenery found in Australia. Towering cliffs drop off into verdant valleys, offering unforgettable views from lookout points and walking trails throughout the area. The wild bushland that carpets the area exudes eucalyptus oil, creating the soft blue haze that gives the range its name. While parts of the Blue Mountains were impacted by severe bushfires in the summer of 2019/20, the most popular travel destinations were thankfully left untouched, and regrowth is regenerating the areas that were hit.

Our Blue Mountains Tours explore this incredible wilderness on Sydney’s doorstep, offering plenty of photo opportunities from the remarkable lookouts that dot the area. Join one of our Blue Mountains day trips to meet some of Australia’s iconic wildlife, discover the quaint mountain towns, amble down picturesque walking trails and much more.

This was a fabulous trip. Jay, our guide, was knowledgeable and tailored our stops to ensure the best views of the Three Sisters. We felt like a VIP everywhere we went because of Jay’s local connections. As a solo traveler, I felt comfortable and had a chance to meet fellow travelers because of the small size. The lunch was extra tasty—I recommend the chicken schnitzel which was the size of my head and extra tasty. I also loved the Sydney Zoo where we had a personal guide to showcase the Australian native animals. Highly recommend this trip!

Paul June 2024

Great day out! Super easy, from pick-up to drop-off. Just enough time spent at each location, really enjoyed the wildlife park as well. Our driver/guide, Tom, was informative and witty, and he made the day even more enjoyable than just being driven around in silence. Boat ride back was the perfect way to cap off a lovely day.

Maggie M March 2024

Kunal was a fantastic guide. His commentary throughout the day was informative, interesting and humorous. It was a very full day and everything ran like clockwork. I would highly recommend this tour.

Elaine W March 2024

Fantastic day. Adam is a brilliant guide. Very knowledgeable and entertaining. I would recommend Anderson tours to everyone.

Kathy C March 2024

Absolutely one of the best tours ever been on. Our bus driver and guide, Adam, made it an outstanding event! He knew all the right places, kept everything to schedule and all done with great humor. Loved it!

Ron J March 2024

The whole trip was wonderful! Our driver Adam made it an incredibly memorable experience even though it was raining and there was heavy fog. He took us to places other big tour busses didn’t go and or he knew their schedules so he made sure we were not around them all day. That really made it feel like a special small group tour. The place we went for lunch, The Bunker, was excellent. Food was amazing, they were extreme prompt and their customer service was impeccable. Would definitely continue to use them.

zeev March 2024

This tour was a great tour Excellent agenda, our guide was 10 !!!!! Fully recommend this tour with this great company They stand by everything they write about the tour, about the places , about the lunch !!! Save your self time call them .

J A August 2023

Our Guide K.G , really did make the tour worthwhile. Wealth of knowledge throughout the “entire” trip. Fully engaged from 1st greet to send off on the Ferry home. She was able to modify the schedule to ensure we were able to see all we wanted to while we negotiated the fog and rainy moments. Would highly recommend this tour group company, and will definitely consider it again on my next visit

Mike W. August 2023

Bob was so great, he drove us to alternate locations when the fog and mist obstructed views. Bob was friendly, and very informative – and it seemed like he had great relationships with the attraction operators. He made sure we all had a great experience

YofSShaw August 2023

A great way to spend the day; amazing views and an outstanding commentary from Kat, our tour guide. She knew everything about the areas that we visited, could answer every question and was really funny to boot. Big thank you to Kat; a thoroughly recommended day out.

Rene G. August 2023

Mike, our tour guide, did an excellent job. The views from the blue mountains were stunning. Lunch was really good. The best part was Featherdale wildlife park and getting to feed the animals.

Katie B. August 2023

My husband and I had the most amazing time! Our guide, Steve, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful during the entire day. He went above and beyond and helped us have the best experience at every single stop. He even took us to some bonus spots! We can’t recommend this tour or thank him enough! It was a day full of beautiful views, great information, and incredible experiences such as riding the steepest railway in the world and feeding kangaroos. 10/10!

Stacey S. August 2023

This tour was well organized, on time and stopped at amazing sights throughout the Blue Mountains. Our tour guide, Bob, was incredible. He read the weather patterns and made choices on the sequence of sights so that we had the best views. And we had a tricky day of weather so that was no small task. He also shared great local and Aboriginal knowledge.

Bruce S. August 2023

The guides were great. I had Bob for most of the trip and then KG for Featherdale who gave me a personal guided tour of the sanctuary after I was inadvertently transferred to the bus that was going to the zoo. I had no idea the Blue Mountains were as impressive as they are (much like the Grand Canyon but more green). And, Scenic World was neat with the world’s steepest railway. Featherdale has mostly indigenous animals, so much better than Taronga Zoo which I had visited the day before.

Is it worth to visit Blue Mountains?

Blue Mountains: Why you have to add this to your travel basket

Frequently asked questions (faq) of blue mountains day trips from sydney.

The Blue Mountains , famed for its endless eucalyptus (gum tree) forests, is home to all four different types of eucalyptus trees found in Australia. These trees are found not only in dedicated natural forest areas, but grow in canyons, ridges, cliffs, and surround the myriad waterfalls in the region. The high temperatures cause these gum trees to emit a fine mist discharge created from the eucalyptus oil from its leaves. This oil mist then combines with dust particles and water vapour as it rises to surround the area giving it an overall blue tint, especially when the sun shines high and bright. Thus, when viewed from a distance , especially Sydney city, the Blue Mountains look very blue indeed!

Blue Mountains are nearly 100 km or a 1.5-hour drive towards the West of Sydney. However, if you are taking the M4 motorway on a Blue Mountains day trip (enter via Wattle Street, Sydney), you would be able to reduce the time in one third.

People visit the Blue Mountains throughout the year. However, we highly recommended visiting the Blue Mountains from January to March. These months have an average temperature is around the 16 Celsius mark, so, it is not cold or too hot. Always check the weather at the last minute before visiting this UNESCO world heritage site. If you happen to visit on a rainy or gloomy day, your chances to see most of the lookouts are minimal.

It is debatable. There are many attractions, things to do , and quite difficult to cover in a day trip. However, you will be able to cover the most famous attractions, for example, Three Sisters, Scenic World, and Govett’s Leap on a full day trip to Blue Mountains from Sydne y.

It is depending on the season that you are planning to visit the Blue Mountains via a day trip . Summer months (December, January & February) get warm and recommended to wear comfortable and breathable clothes in our Blue Mountains tours. Also, wear comfortable shoes if you are planning to hike, for example, the Blue Mountains sunset tours included a bushwalk to Katoomba or Leura Cascade . A jumper, coat, and scarf (winter clothing) recommended during the winter months (June to August) if you are planning to visit the Blue Mountains.

Yes, however, it is not possible to see them by a day trip to the Blue Mountains . Koalas sightings have recorded by many overnight campers in the areas of Grose Vale and Bilpin.

You can spot wild kangaroos from a Blue Mountains Sydney Tour by getting a detour to the Euroka camper ground from Glenbrook. If you want to hand-feed kangaroos, the best option is to make a stop at the Featherdale wildlife park near Black town.

This is a little trick often offer by big bus charters to travellers and we do not recommend this option after a long day in Blue Mountains. However, we can certainly arrange this. Most big bus drivers found its hard to drop individual travellers to Sydney CBD hotels on return due to evening traffic and its time-consuming. So, offering a river cruise ticket is the cheapest option for them, but not convenient from the customer point of view as the traveller has to catch a taxi from Circular Quay to the accommodation after a long tied day on a Blue Mountains tour.

Absolutely! A day trip to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales is definitely worth it. The region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including rugged cliffs, lush forests, and mesmerizing waterfalls. You can explore various scenic lookouts like Echo Point, where you’ll find the iconic Three Sisters rock formation, and take in the breathtaking views of the Jamison Valley.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy, such as bushwalking along numerous trails of varying difficulty levels, visiting the charming town of Leura with its boutique shops and cafes, or experiencing the Scenic World attractions, which offer thrilling rides and panoramic views of the landscape.

The Blue Mountains are only a couple of hours away from Sydney, making it very accessible for a day trip. The beauty and natural wonders you’ll encounter make it a worthwhile destination, even if you have limited time.

The length of a Blue Mountains tour can vary depending on the type of tour you choose and the activities involved. Tours can range from half-day trips (around 4-5 hours) to full-day experiences (8-10 hours). Some tours might include activities like hiking, visiting scenic lookouts, exploring waterfalls, or even taking a ride on the Scenic Railway or Skyway. It’s best contact us if you need a customise itinerary of the tour, you’re interested in.

The amount of time you might want to spend in the Blue Mountains, NSW, can vary depending on your interests and what you’d like to explore. If you’re planning to visit the main sights and do some popular activities like visiting the Three Sisters, Scenic World, hiking, and exploring the towns in the area, a few days, like a weekend trip, could be sufficient.

However, if you’re an avid hiker or nature enthusiast and wish to explore more trails, visit lesser-known spots, or simply take your time to soak in the scenery, you might want to plan a longer trip, perhaps four to five days. This would allow for a more leisurely exploration of the region, including its various walking tracks, waterfalls, and quaint towns.

Ultimately, consider your interests and the pace at which you’d like to experience the Blue Mountains when deciding how much time to allocate for your visit.

The Blackheath area is a haven for many rare and threatened species. The Blue Mountains cliff mallee tree is found only in the upper mountains on exposed cliff edges. In October, you may see a rare giant dragonfly, which has a wing span up to 12.5cm and body as thick as your little finger. Stroll along Fairfax Heritage track for a chance to see Australia’s largest native land slug, the red triangle slug—they only come out in rain. The fresh Blue Mountains air has been promoted as a health tonic from the early 1800s. Today, you can follow in the footsteps of early European tourists along Blackheath’s many historic tracks. Grand Canyon track has drawn visitors to its stone steps since 1907. The spectacular Govetts Leap descent took 2 men 7 months to cut and blast the track, following natural faults and ledges in the cliff. Many of the original hand tool marks are visible on the stone stairway. Along other tracks you may see heritage signs, old timber stairs, metal handrails, bridges and ladders.

World-class wilderness

A hiker stands on a rock along Rodriguez Pass walking track, Blue Mountains National Park. Photo: Simone Cottrell/OEH.

The Grose Wilderness is the only declared wilderness area in Blue Mountains National Park. At the heart of the Grose Wilderness is the magnificent Blue Gum Forest. This closed forest of tall blue gum trees is one of the most secluded areas in the Blue Mountains. It also played an important role in the beginnings of the park and conservation movement in NSW. In 1932, the forest was saved from the axe when a group of bushwalkers pooled their money to buy out the lease. Almost 100 years later, intrepid hikers can hike into this natural wonder via Perrys Lookdown or Pierces Pass.

Long-nosed bandicoot (Perameles nasuta)

A nocturnal marsupial and one of the smaller Australian native animals, the long-nosed bandicoot is found across eastern Australia. Eastern blue-tongue lizard (Tiliqua scinciodes)

The eastern blue-tongue lizard, one of the largest skinks in Australia, is found throughout most of NSW. When threatened, the eastern blue-tongue lizard displays its blue tongue in a wide-mouthed intimidating show. Not an agile animal, they feed on slow-moving beetles and snails.

Eastern water dragon. Photo: Rosie Nicolai

Eastern water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii lesueurii)

The eastern water dragon is a subaquatic lizard found in healthy waterways along eastern NSW, from Nowra to halfway up the Cape York Pensinsula. It’s believed to be one of the oldest of Australian reptiles, remaining virtually unchanged for over 20 million years.

Sugar glider. Photo: Jeff Betteridge

Sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps)

The sugar glider is a tree-dwelling Australian native marsupial, found in tall eucalypt forests and woodlands along eastern NSW. The nocturnal sugar glider feeds on insects and birds, and satisfies its sweet tooth with nectar and pollens.

Superb lyrebird, Minnamurra Rainforest, Budderoo National Park. Photo: David Finnegan

Superb lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae)

With a complex mimicking call and an elaborate courtship dance to match, the superb lyrebird is one of the most spectacular Australian animals. A bird watching must-see, the superb lyrebird can be found in rainforests and wet woodlands across eastern NSW and Victoria.

Wonga Wonga vine. Photo: Barry Collier

Wonga wonga vine (Pandorea pandorana)

The wonga wonga vine is a widespread vigorous climber usually found along eastern Australia. A variation of the plant occurs in the central desert, where it resembles a sprawling shrub. One of the more common Australian native plants, the wonga wonga vine produces bell-shaped white or yellow flowers in the spring, followed by a large oblong-shaped seed pod.

Old man banksia, Moreton National Park. Photo: John Yurasek

Old man banksia (Banksia serrata)

Hardy Australian native plants, old man banksias can be found along the coast, and in the dry sclerophyll forests and sandstone mountain ranges of NSW. With roughened bark and gnarled limbs, they produce a distinctive cylindrical yellow-green banksia flower which blossoms from summer to early autumn.

Blueberry ash. Photo: Jaime Plaza

Blueberry ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus)

The blueberry ash is a rainforest shrub which produces blue olive-shaped berries and spectacular bell-shaped flowers, which often appear on the plant together. It is a tall slender shrub or small tree found in rainforest, tall eucalypt forest and coastal bushland in eastern NSW, south-east Queensland and Victoria.

Coachwood flower. Photo: Michael Van Ewijk

Flannel flower (Actinotus helianthi)

The delicate flannel flower is so named because of the soft woolly feel of the plant. Growing in the NSW south coast region, extending to Narrabri in the Central West and up to south-east Queensland, its white or pink flowers bloom all year long, with an extra burst of colour in the spring.

Grass trees, Sugarloaf State Conservation Area. Photo: Michael Van Ewijk

Scribbly gum (Eucalyptus haemastoma)

Easily identifiable Australian native plants, scribbly gum trees are found throughout NSW coastal plains and hills in the Sydney region. The most distinctive features of this eucalypt are the ‘scribbles’ made by moth larva as it tunnels between the layers of bark.

Smooth-barked apple. Photo: Jaime Plaza

Smooth-barked apple (Angophora costata)

Smooth-barked apple gums, also known as Sydney red gum or rusty gum trees, are Australian native plants found along the NSW coast, and in the Sydney basin and parts of Queensland. Growing to heights of 15-30m, the russet-coloured angophoras shed their bark in spring to reveal spectacular new salmon-coloured bark.

Waratah (Telopea speciosissima)
