Tsavo, Amboseli or Masai Mara – Which safari park in Kenya should you visit?

Wildlife in Kenya - best places to visit in Kenya

In order to properly plan a safari in Kenya, you need to better understand which one of the three big parks suits you the most: Tsavo, Amboseli or Masai Mara?

Either you plan a safari in Kenya independently, or have a tour operator taking care of everything in the back, organizing your first safari is not easy at all. There are too many options to choose from, price categories that are on a first sight difficult to understand and a timetable you need to delicately plan in order to not spend hours and hours on the road.

I traveled to Kenya reporting on national parks and safari experiences, and was able to explore some of its safari parks. These are my thoughts on which safari experience in Kenya you should visit. Tsavo National Park, Amboseli National Park or Masai Mara Natural Reserve, which one is the best?

Lions at Masai Mara

Starting from zero

When it comes to start your plan for a safari trip in Kenya, the first question to answer is mobility and flexibility. Unlike Europe or North America, where traveling from A to B is extremely simple and options are endless, transportation in Kenya does not work like that. Unless you have a very high budget and can afford traveling by private charter (around 200 – 300 EUR per flight) , the only way to properly move around is by land.

Therefore, either you start your trip in Nairobi or Mombasa (Kenya’s two key cities), expect to drive for hours and hours in order to get to a national park or a natural reserve. For example, Masai Mara is located just 280km away from Nairobi. Still, you need about 6 hours to get there. The same goes from Nairobi to Amboseli, where its distance between is just 190km, but you need 4 hours to get there.

And while is possible to plan a 10 day trip and visit all three most important wildlife parks in Kenya, Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo, take into consideration this would involve spending most of the time driving from one side to the other and wasting valuable time.

NOTE: a standard safari trip in Kenya would involve visiting two parks for 2-3 nights each. This will be enough time to get a good glimpse of the wildlife in Kenya and not get overwhelmed by the long and monotonous drives.

Where to go for a safari in Kenya

On a first sight, Masai Mara seems to be the perfect place to go for a safari. It is the epicenter for the wildebeest migration within the months of August to October and it is worldwide known as one of the best national parks in the world.

However, expensive permits, availability in accommodation and long drives, should be factors to be considered before you book your trip.

Fortunately, Tsavo or Amboseli are offering great options for those with limited budget, time or a tight schedule.

INSIDE TIP: Located just 7 km away from Nairobi, the Nairobi National Park is a good place to visit only if you are planning to skip any other bigger National Parks in Kenya. The wildlife here is way less than anywhere else in the country and I would prefer to pay a bit more, extend one or two nights and visit Amboseli.

Why should you visit Masai Mara Natural Reserve?

Beside the wildebeest migration, Masai Mara is always great. It is the only park in Kenya where you can spot all big five in a single day and experience wildlife encounters that will simply leave you speechless.

It is one of the most beautiful safari spots in the world and even if you miss the migration, you will never leave disappointed.

On the other hand, Masai Mara’s entrance fees and overnight fees are the most expensive in Kenya. Expect to pay anything between 200-300 USD per day for a simple private tour and depending on the time of the year, reservations have to be done months in advance.

Still, for those looking to see the best of Kenya, Masai Mara is the option to go.

Why should you visit Amboseli National Park?

Located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the landscapes in Amboseli are magical. Elephants roaming freely in groups of 20 or 30, and thousands of flamingo flying around and dancing in the air.  Additionally, to its smaller size and closer distance to Nairobi, Amboseli has become this quick getaway from the city and an easy place to explore wild Kenya in a limited time.

With lower prices, great road conditions connecting the park and extraordinary wildlife, Amboseli is never a miss.

However, wildlife in Amboseli is way less than in Masai Mara. Big cats are more difficult to spot and leopards have not been seen in decades around this area.

Why should you visit Tsavo National Park?

Tsavo seems to be the perfect introduction for a safari in Kenya. It is the largest national park from all three in this article, and due to its location, the logistics of planning a trip to Tsavo are the simplest in whole Kenya.

Great signalization and easy access makes Tsavo a good place for a self-driving safari and since it is the least popular park from all three, you won’t be surrounded by a dozen cars when you spot a lion or a big elephant.

On the other hand, many think Tsavo is not as special as Masai Mara and Amboseli. The spotting of wildlife is way more difficult due to its massive size and large vegetation. Also, travelers can unfortunately spend a full weekend here without spotting a big cat.

What about Serengeti?

Combining Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara on the same trip seems to be the most reasonable choice when it comes to planning a safari. They are not only the center for wildlife experiences in the world, but they are also located right next to each other.

And its true. Visiting both parks on the same trip is an experience of a lifetime and something only few people can do. However, before you back your bags and book a lodge, take into consideration the logistical challenge that visiting Masai Mara and Serengeti on the same trip is.

First of all, Masai Mara is located in Kenya, while Serengeti is located in Tanzania. Beside the visa costs and border crossing, there are no direct connections from Masai Mara to Serengeti. You will have to drive back to Nairobi, from there go to Arusha and once in Arusha take a transfer to Serengeti – something you need to plan at least 2-3 days in doing.

Additionally, while Serengeti is one of the most extraordinary safari parks in the world, it is also one of the most expensive. A day in Serengeti starts at 300 USD per person, while a day in Amboseli can get as low as 100 USD per person.

Combining Serengeti with a trip to Kenya as doable, it just requires a bigger planning from your side.

Planning a trip to Kenya independently is fun. However, if you want to arrange everything with tour operators beforehand from the comfort of your home. SafariBookings is the best platform for it.

They have the largest database of tour operators in Africa and you can simply send a request and negotiate a tour and a price directly with the operator. You don’t have to pay any additional fees.

Amboseli, Chyulu Hills and Tsavo

Travel to kenya’s amboseli, chyulu hills and tsavo regions with african wildlife safaris for a luxury safari..

These majestic parks of Kenya’s southwest offer three very different experiences: Amboseli harbours amazing Mt Kilimanjaro views and huge elephant herds, Chyulu Hills has a haunting isolation while Tsavo is big game country.

Staying on private concessions adjoining each of these stunning Kenyan national parks guarantees an authentic wildlife experience away from the crowds. Another clear advantage of staying outside public reserves is this: guests may undertake activities not normally permitted such as walking safaris, horseback riding and off-road open vehicle game drives.

On the border of Tanzania, Amboseli is one of Kenya’s finest game parks. This is where you’ll find lumbering bull elephants and lonely flat-topped acacias on the golden plains beneath snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro. The proud Maasai – often seen tending their cattle on the park’s outskirts – are also often employed as guides, for it is they who know this wilderness best.

The Chyulu Hills are an untouched mosaic of deep forests, dry open plains and rocky volcanic outcrops with views of Mt Kilimanjaro in the distance on a clear day. As game is much harder to find in this reserve, uncovering a leopard or a pride of lions is a richly rewarding exercise. Visitors to this park are also few and far between so your connection with the land is deeply personal.

Tsavo West comprises half of one of Africa’s largest parks and its varied terrain of woodland, scrub and savanna supports a multitude of species including all the ‘Big 5’, baboons, hyenas, giraffes, cheetahs and so much more. Game drives in this area can be intense, while walks allow you to take in the smaller inhabitants of the Kenyan bush. The crystalline Mzima Springs are also in this area – rich in hippo and Nile crocodile.

Amboseli, Chyulu and Tsavo Highlights

  • Three distinct but equally amazing national parks
  • Breathtaking landscapes and beautiful scenery
  • Reliably good elephant viewing
  • Uncrowded and unspoilt corners of Kenya
  • The opportunity to walk and enjoy open vehicle game drives

The dry season from July to October is the most pleasant time to visit as wildlife converges at remaining waterholes. Skies are clear and mosquitoes few during these months; however, this period coincides with the Great Migration in the Masai Mara so expect lodges to be busy and prices high. In the wetter months, you’re more likely to find better birdlife with plenty of feathered migrants from Europe, fresh green landscapes, animal births and no crowds. If heavy rains render roads impassable, all of our lodges are accessible by air.

3-Day Amboseli Safari Tours

Three days in Amboseli National Park is a popular choice for a safari. Amboseli NP is one of Africa’s bucket-list destinations. And for good reason; this is the location of the quintessential African image of a huge herd of elephants walking in front of the snow-capped peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro. While elephants are the main attraction, there is plenty of other wildlife too. The open terrain makes for easy viewing, and the central wetlands make the park an excellent birding hot spot too. Amboseli NP is often incorporated into a longer Kenyan safari covering several parks and reserves, but it is also a suitable destination for a short trip. The park’s relatively small size makes it easy to explore on a 3-day tour.

6 Questions About 3-Day Amboseli Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

amboseli tsavo safari fti

What can I expect from a 3-day safari in Amboseli?

“You’re in for an experience of a lifetime when going on a 3-day tour in Amboseli NP. Even when you’re out of the city for just 3 days, you’ll get a chance to really get away from it all. Leaving your hotel after breakfast, you’ll get to the park mid-morning. This gives you some time to relax and enjoy lunch before heading out on your first afternoon game drive. Seeing animals walk across the dusty plains at sunset is a very special scene. After a lovely dinner, you might want to turn in early as you’ll be out looking for animals again at sunrise. Early morning is a glorious time in Amboseli. With luck you’ll see the peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro glisten in the first rays of sunshine. You’ll get a nice break in the middle of the day to enjoy at the lodge or campsite before heading out again in the afternoon. On a 3-day safari in Amboseli, you’ll get a chance to explore different areas of the park. You’ll look for big elephant herds, buffalos, zebras, antelopes and gazelles, and hopefully you’ll see some predators too. On your last morning you can head out again to see what’s around, or you might prefer to stay in with a cup of coffee to watch the sunrise on Africa’s highest peak. Either way, after breakfast you’ll start your journey back to Nairobi. You can also book a 3-day Amboseli safari from Mombasa. This itinerary usually includes a night in Tsavo East or Tsavo West National Parks en route to Amboseli.”

Is a road safari or fly-in safari a better choice?

“There are pros and cons to consider when choosing between a road or fly-in safari to Amboseli NP. Either way, Amboseli is very accessible from Nairobi. The distance is about 200km on a good road and the driving time is under four hours. When driving from Nairobi, you get to the park before lunch time. There are plenty of budget and mid-range tours offering this popular 3-day Amboseli NP road safari. A road trip gives you a chance to get a glimpse of ordinary Kenyan village life as you drive past settlements along the way. However, if you prefer to maximize your time in the park and you don’t mind the additional cost, a fly-in safari is an attractive option too. There are daily flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the park’s airstrip. Coming from Mombasa, the drive to Amboseli takes about seven hours. Regular flights from Mombasa make a 3-day Amboseli safari from the coastal resorts a more attractive option.”

What kind of accommodation can I expect?

“Amboseli NP has several accommodation options in and near the park. Adventurous travelers might enjoy a camping safari. The campsites inside the park are at fantastic locations, but the private campsites outside the park generally have better facilities. There is also a variety of hotels to choose from. Most accommodation options are located outside the Kimani Gate. There are some great mid-range options, as well as several budget and luxury establishments. In the mid-range category, you have a choice between a tented camp or a simple lodge. Both offer all you need for a comfortable stay. Whichever accommodation you choose, you most likely won’t be there much as you’ll try to spend most of your time out in the bush. Staying inside the park, however, does mean you’ll be in the best location to start your game drives. The options inside the park are limited to campsites, two lodges and a luxury tented camp. ”

Which animals am I likely to see?

“Amboseli NP is one of Kenya’s top wildlife-viewing destinations. Big elephant herds can be seen crossing the dusty plains to spend most of the day in the central wetland area. Solitary males often steal the show with their relaxed nature and unusually big tusks. You’ll see plenty of other animals too. You might spot buffalos wallowing during the heat of the day, or giraffes in the shade of an acacia tree, chewing on their favorite food. Zebras, wildebeest and gazelles dot the open plains, but predators are a bit harder to spot. Keep your eyes peeled for that special sighting: lions feeding on a kill, a leopard lazing on a tree branch or a cheetah running at incredible speed across the savannah. Spotted hyenas are a treat to watch too. Spending time at a den makes you appreciate their complex social interactions.”

How much will this safari cost?

“A mid-range tour, using a mid-range tented camp or lodge, costs between US$500 and US$1000 per person. Several factors determine the cost of a 3-day Amboseli NP safari. Operators use different vehicles and the quality of the guiding can vary as well. However, the biggest difference in tour prices is determined by the level of accommodation. Private tours are most popular, but you might be able to economize by joining a group tour. If your timing is flexible, you could consider traveling in the low season when visitor numbers are low and prices favourable. Most people opt for a road safari, but luxury fly-in packages are available too. Always get a few quotations to compare and don’t forget to check out the reviews of the operators on SafariBookings; it’s always good to read about other people’s experiences. ”

Is a 3-day safari in Amboseli recommended as a short bush break from Nairobi?

“If you need to get away for a couple of nights from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi, a trip to Amboseli NP is the perfect choice. You don’t need to travel far from the capital city of Kenya to be in the wild. Amboseli, located about 200km south of Nairobi, is less than four hours away by car. If you begin your journey early, you’ll get there before lunch. You’ll be able to rest for a couple of hours before going out on your first afternoon game drive. On a 3-day/2-night safari, you’ll have the luxury of a full day in the park and plenty of time to explore. Regular flights between Nairobi/Mombasa and the park make Amboseli even more attractive for a quick getaway.”

The park is characterised by grass and bush savannahs and semi-desert steppes. These alternate with acacia forests, gorges, individual rock groups and island mountains. Seasonal rivers in the southern part are the Voi River and the Mbololo River. The Athi River and the Galana River are permanent waterways. The Galana River is formed above the Lugard Falls by the confluence of the Athi and Tsavo Rivers. Along the rivers there are narrow gallery forests. Standing waters can be found at Mundanda Rock (natural damming through rock face) and at Aruba Dam, in addition to smaller water holes, often created by elephants. Our trip start in Tsavo East Nati park, next day Amboseli and the last one was Taita Hills. It was amazing experience. Our guide / driver names Bonnie was very polite, communicative and friendly person. If you would like to see a lot of animals and have the best time ask for him! We learned a lot and also we saw every kind of animals living in those parks. Bonnie knew exactly what he is doing and he took us on the place where the animals were at the moment. Accomodation was nice, with great food and amazing views. So if you decided to spend some time in Safari, visit Marco Polo, ask for Bonnie and after that just enjoy it! 🙂

amboseli tsavo safari fti

See recommended Kenya safari lodges located in Amboseli and Tsavo National Park.

Amboseli National Park is known for its big skies and far horizons combined with swampy springs and dry and dusty earth trampled by hundreds of animals. The name Amboseli, comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”

Tsavo East is a beautiful game reserve in Kenya where elephants roam the landscape and herds of them can be seen all around. The Galana River passes through the Park and this provides life giving waters in this arid region, which makes it a perfect habitat for these enormous animals. The Park is located in the middle of Kenya, halfway between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Tsavo West forms one of the largest wildlife conservation areas on Earth and is one of the largest national parks in Kenya. The park has abundant wildlife, but due to its size and thicker vegetation game viewing is more challenging. The landscape here ranges from volcanoes to hills - giving visitors an incredible diversity that they won't find anywhere else!
