Positioned in the central part of the country, Da Nang experiences a tropical monsoon climate that has two distinct seasons: a rainy season (from August to December) and a dry season (from January to July). Travel to Da Nang

Da Nang is one of the most developed cities in Vietnam, which means a modern transport system. One of the highlights of Da Nang transportation, making it extremely accessible, is that its airport, train station, and central bus stations are located a short distance from the city center.

Da Nang international airport is only 3 km away from the city center and is operated by many local and international airlines, making it the most preferable way to approach Da Nang from overseas. As soon as arriving at the airport, it is (again) super easy to travel to town due to its convenient location.

The national North-South Railway contributes 30 km of its train line crossing Da Nang city, and all the train routes stop in for dropping off and picking up passengers at this station. Safe, reliable, and more proactive is taking a taxi to see around Da Nang. With the key attractions not too stretched out, it is quite reasonable to go from place to place by taxi. When you get in touch with a driver, it is possible to ask them for a quick tour around the city (normally lasting for around 4 hours) at a cost of 650,000 VND ($28). 1. Where is Da Nang in Vietnam?

2. Climate in Da Nang and the Best Time to Visit

Sometimes there are cold spells in winter but they do not last long and the weather is not very cold.

3. How to Go to Da Nang

Tourists often travel by plane from Hanoi and from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang. Ticket prices range from 1,300,000 – to 3,000,000 VND round trip, depending on the time of booking. Flight time is about 1 hour.

With more time, you can take the train to experience the scenery along the way, especially the section through Hai Van Pass if you come from the north. Train tickets from Hanoi or from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang cost about 630,000 VND ($26) to 1,900,000 VND ($78.5) one-way, corresponding to air-conditioned soft seats and four air-conditioned sleeper beds. Travel time is about 17 to 18 hours.

If you plan to drive your car, you need to spend at least a week on your trip to Da Nang. You should also have two drivers take turns driving or you can stop at places across the way. For example, from Hanoi, it is ideal to depart at noon or early afternoon and stay one night in Nghe An. If you go later, sleep in Thanh Hoa, and the next morning depart for Da Nang. Additionally, you can stop in Quang Binh in the afternoon to rest and explore more.

In Da Nang, you should rent motorbikes or cars to move flexibly. Renting a car is quite convenient. It can be delivered at the airport or hotel for an average price of 100,000 VND ($4) for motorbikes and about 1,000,000 VND ($41) for cars per day.

Son Tra Peninsula

Marble Mountains

8 km from the center of Da Nang, Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains) is home to many sacred temples and a system of natural caves. Following the coastal road stretching as far as the eye can see towards Hoi An, opening to visitors’ eyes a giant “rockery” called Ngu Hanh Son. Hai Van Pass

Hai Van Pass is about an hour by motorbike from the center of Da Nang. The pass is 21 km long, with the highest peak 496 m above sea level. Hai Van means “sea of clouds”. This place was once commented on by Jeremy Clarkson, host of the reality TV show Top Gear (UK), as “one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world”.

There are currently two roads through Hai Van Pass: the road tunnel through Hai Van Pass (not for motorbikes) and the Hai Van Pass road.

• The road tunnel through Hai Van Pass is open daily, with a fee. Tunnel closing time is from 3:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. every day to clean, repair, and maintain its items. If you follow the tunnel, you will not be able to admire the scenery or visit famous places on Hai Van Pass.
• Hai Van Pass is open daily, free of charge. You should choose this route if you want to experience the feeling of conquering the past and enjoying the scenery. Just a note that you must slow down whenever there is fog.

At the beginning of the year, visitors can take “cloud hunting” photos at the famous bend, Hai Van Quan Peak, the “cloud garden” opposite Hai Van Quan, or go down to Van Village to swim in the sea. The ideal time to visit is sunrise or sunset.

Located about 17 km from the center, Nam O Reef is in Hoa Hiep Nam ward, Lien Chieu district, Da Nang city. The name Nam O refers to the southern gate of Dai Viet country from 700 years ago. This is a densely populated place, mainly practicing fishing gear. Nam O is also famous for making traditional firecrackers and fish sauce.

This is a long rocky beach with many strange shapes covered with green moss located on the beach. Sunset and sunrise are two times when many people go to the rapids to get satisfactory photos. In this area, there are also specialties of Nam O fish salad and famous Nam O fish sauce that have been passed down through many generations of coastal villages here.

Ghenh Bang has been a famous destination among Da Nang backpackers for about 3 years now. This place is located on Son Tra peninsula, about 15 km from Da Nang city center, in the direction of Hoang Sa road. Ghenh Bang along with Gun Cape, Nghe Cape, Golden Sand Beach, and Da Den Beach… have created natural landscapes that attract tourists to explore.

With a road to the sea about 2 km long, Ghenh Bang has flat sandy beaches, large and small rocks protruding into the sea, coral beaches… Visitors to Ghenh Bang often prepare firewood, snacks, and drinking water for camping or day picnics.

Traditional Craft Villages

• 14 km southwest of Da Nang center, Cam Ne Mat Village belongs to Hoa Tien commune, Hoa Vang district. This place has long been famous for traditional flower mats, which were once present in the Nguyen dynasty.
• Tuy Loan Rice Paper Craft Village is located in Hoa Phong commune, Hoang Vang district, about 15 km from the city center. This over 500-year-old village is suitable for a journey to explore the history of Da Nang. Particularly, the village is famous for making rice paper and Quang noodles.
• Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village is located at the foot of the Marble Mountains. The nearly 400-year-old traditional craft village is famous for its beautiful and sophisticated stone handicraft products, created by the skilled hands of artisans.

Hoa Trung Lake

This is an artificial lake, providing water for daily life and farming for people in Hoa Lien and Hoa Son communes, Lien Chieu district. The lake is surrounded by floating islands, which are suitable for tourists who like to explore, camp, and picnic. You should prepare adequate food and water for camping overnight by the lake, but be careful to clean up and bring trash home.

Hoa Trung Lake is 20 km from Da Nang city center. It takes about 40 minutes to get here by motorbike. From the city, you go along Au Co Street (Hoa Khanh market), follow Ba Na’s direction, and find Hoa Ninh parish. Then, you turn left to see the concrete road and keep going all the way. You will see a trail only 30 cm wide. If you have difficulty finding your way, ask the locals.

Da Nang is known as the city of bridges in Vietnam. Dragon Bridge, Han River Swing Bridge, Tran Thi Ly Bridge, and Love Bridge are attractions that you should sightsee and check-in. Furthermore, right near the Love Bridge is a statue of a carp turning into a dragon.

Dragon Bridge

It’s one of the most ornate bridges in the world . In particular, Dragon Bridge is more crowded on three weekend nights when there are dragon performances that spray water and fire. From 9 p.m., many tourists and people gathered on the bridge, on both sides of the Han River, or in nearby high-rise buildings.

Vehicles traveling at both ends of the bridge were stopped for 15 minutes during the show. You should choose a suitable standing direction to watch the performance. If you stand near the dragon, don’t forget to wear a raincoat or umbrella to avoid getting wet when the dragon sprays water.

Han River Bridge

This is the first swing bridge in Vietnam. Han River Bridge has a length of 487.7 m and a width of 12.9 m with 11 spans, including two cable-stayed spans. Especially, the bridge part located on the pier in the middle of the river can turn 90 degrees parallel to the flow direction to allow large ships to pass. The project is also a symbol of the combination and consensus between the government and the people, built by the people of Da Nang.

Thuan Phuoc Bridge

Thuan Phuoc Bridge is the largest suspension bridge in Vietnam. The bridge is 1,856 m long and 18 m wide. It has two abutments at both ends of the bridge, and two cable towers plugged into the river bed.

Tran Thi Ly Bridge

Tran Thi Ly Bridge is named after the heroine in the resistance war against the Americans from Quang Nam. The bridge is located south of Dragon Bridge, about 1.5 km. Previously, there was an old bridge with the same name. Yet, it has been replaced by the new bridge today.

My Khe Beach

My Khe Beach was voted by Forbes magazine as one of the 6 most attractive beaches on the planet. It’s also in the top 25 most beautiful beaches in Asia in 2021 by TripAdvisor. City Children’s Cultural Palace

Da Nang Children’s Cultural Palace is a popular check-in point for young people thanks to its design based on the idea of the Tangram puzzle game. This work received the 2016 National Architecture Gold Award, awarded by the Vietnam Association of Architects. This destination is located on 2/9 Street, Hai Chau District. The palace has 3 floors including multi-functional areas, entertainment areas, classrooms, libraries, halls…

• The Museum of Cham Sculpture is located at No. 2, Street 2/9, Hai Chau District. This is the only museum of Cham culture, preserving relics of the ancient Champa Kingdom. The museum is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. The entrance tickets cost 60,000 VND per visit. There is an automatic interpretation service and viewing of artifact information using applications and 4D scanning technology.
• Da Nang Fine Arts Museum is located at 78 Le Duan, Hai Chau district. The museum preserves and displays more than 1,000 works of modern fine art, folk art artifacts, and traditional handicraft products. Opening hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. The ticket price is 20,000 VND per trip (50% discount for students).
• The Buddhist Museum is located on the campus of Avalokiteśvara Pagoda, at 48 Su Van Hanh, Ngu Hanh Son District. Coming here, you can admire more than 200 ancient Buddhist artifacts. The museum is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, free to visit.

Da Nang Cathedral

Tourane Church (French colonial period), also known as Sacred Heart of Jesus Church or Cathedral Church, was started in February 1923 on empty land on Rue du Musée Street (now Tran Phu Street, Da Nang). It was designed and built by Father Vallet. Local people often call the project by a familiar name, Chicken Church. It’s because, on the roof of the church, there is a typical gray chicken statue.

Mural Alley

Da Nang Mural Village Project at 75 Nguyen Van Linh Street (near Dragon Bridge, Hai Chau District). The mural village is located in an alley, but right at the entrance are signs introducing the destination. Visitors will park their cars outside to walk inside.

Located on Ong Ich Khiem Street right in the city center, Con Market is one of the oldest and largest markets in the coastal city. Con Market is considered a snack paradise with many restaurants that are always crowded, selling a variety of foods, from breakfast to lunch, and especially afternoon snacks. In particular, Banh Beo, rice paper rolled with pork, Quang noodles, snails, and sweet soup… are popular with prices starting from 10,000 VND. In addition to food, specialties bought as gifts are also sold a lot such as fish sauce, squid simmered with tamarind, beef patties, shrimp…

Han Market is located right in the city center, near the Han River bridge, adjacent to Hung Vuong, Tran Phu, Tran Hung Dao, and Bach Dang streets on 4 sides. The market dates back to the 40s of the last century. However, with a convenient location for both road and waterway traffic, this place is increasingly developed and bustling.

Other Markets

The city has many seafood markets, but the most attractive is still the area located along Vo Nguyen Giap Street and the coastal streets of Son Tra District, Da Nang. Here the stalls display all kinds of newly caught seafood, from oysters, snails, and crabs, to very fresh fish, shrimp, squid, etc.

In addition, Da Nang has bustling night markets. To elaborate, Helio night market (2/9 Street, Hai Chau), Son Tra night market (Ly Nam De Street intersects with Mai Hac De, Son Tra), Thanh Khe night market West (Yen Khe 1 Street, Thanh Khe district), Le Duan night market (144 Le Duan, Hai Chau), Hoa Khanh night market (Nguyen Canh Chan street). This is a vibrant shopping and dining paradise at night for both residents and tourists.

6. Best Things to Do in Da Nang

The helicopter departs from Nuoc Man Airport and flies around to see the Marble Mountains from above. After that, the helicopter circles back to Dragon Bridge, along the Han River for visitors to see the Han River Bridge, Thuan Phuoc Bridge, and the city’s impressive high-rise architectural blocks.

Arriving at Son Tra peninsula, the helicopter circles to the sea, and you can see the largest Lady Buddha statue in Vietnam. Then, it circles back and flies along Da Nang Beach back to Nuoc Man Airport. The ticket price for a 12-minute tour is currently 2,140,000 VND per person.

Surfing, SUP

You can sign up for surfing and SUP lessons at the Da Nang Surf School on My Khe beach. This is the first school in Vietnam to have instructors certified by ISA (International Surfing Association). You need to prepare bathing clothes and sunscreen. The SUP rowing class is suitable for many people’s physical conditions.

Cruise on the Han River

The boat takes you from the tourist wharf down the Han River. You can view the city center at night and admire Da Nang’s unique bridges. The boat serves food, music, etc. depending on the needs of tourists. Moreover, some tours offer sightseeing experiences, dinner, and watching the Dragon Bridge breathe fire on the weekend. The ticket prices range from 150,000 to 500,000 VND per person.

Da Nang has cool weather at night, even in the middle of summer. Going out to get some fresh air, you won’t feel hot. Additionally, the city is not too noisy or busy. The people are gentle and friendly. Furthermore, food and beverage services, restaurants, and bars are open late at night, making it convenient for visitors to eat and have drinks at night.

7. Best Food in Da Nang

Mi Quang Da Nang , or Quang Style Noodles, do not have an “immutable” formula. However, it’s very diverse in flavors such as Quang noodles with shrimp and meat, Quang noodles with snakehead fish, Quang noodles with crab rolls, etc. Quang noodles are a dry dish and a bowl of noodles does not include any ingredients. Now there’s a shortage of roasted peanuts and crispy toasted sesame rice paper.

If you come to Da Nang on the first day of the lunar calendar, it will be difficult to find a bowl of meat noodles. Instead, there are vegetarian Quang noodles with main ingredients from tofu, mushrooms, and tubers.

A small bowl of Quang noodles costs about 15,000 VND, a large bowl costs about 20,000 – 30,000 VND, and special bowls can cost up to 60,000 VND.

A fairly simple dish, however, it is the careful selection of ingredients that makes the dish special. Pork is only taken from the butt or shoulder. The accompanying vegetables must be fresh and green such as lettuce, basil, fish mint, banana flower, cucumber, green banana, bean sprouts, etc. Seasoning sauce of meat rolls Pork is an irreplaceable dipping sauce. Pork rice paper sold in portions costs about 50,000 – 200,000 VND per portion.

Veal Meat at Mong Bridge

Da Nang people also call this dish the familiar name “Bò Tái Cầu Mống” (Mong Bridge rare beef). When the veal is taken out of the oven, it must have two layers of rare, well-cooked meat, with the skin cooked to the point of transparency while being both crispy and soft.

Dipping sauce made from whole anchovies with sugar, garlic, chili, ginger, and roasted sesame. When eaten, it is accompanied by herbs and rice paper, similar to pork rice paper rolls. Mong Bridge veal has prices ranging from 350,000 to 380,000 VND per kg.

Nam O Fish Salad

The fish used to make this dish can be from sardines, anchovies, or tilapia,… Yet, the most delicious is still herring. The characteristic feature of Nam O fish salad is the dipping sauce made from boiled fish juice, mixed with Nam O fish sauce, chili, tapioca starch, and MSG. In addition to the usual accompanying vegetables, Nam O fish salad also has wild toadstools, bamboo shoots, brocade leaves, orchid hearts,… which only grow on Hai Van pass.

You can eat fish with vegetables and rice paper rolls or mix fish and vegetables with dipping sauce. In addition, the wet fish salad is attractive with fresh, sweet fish meat soaked in rich spicy broth, prepared from the famous Nam O fish sauce. Nam O fish salad costs about 80,000 VND per serving, enough for 2 people.

Banh Xeo with Spring Rolls

Delicious Banh Xeo shops are concentrated on Hoang Dieu, Trung Nu Vuong, Chau Thi Vinh Te, and Dong Da streets. The average price is from 20,000 to 100,000 VND per portion depending on the number of cakes and spring rolls.

Central region Banh Xeo is usually as small as a plate so it is crispy and fits better when rolled. The accompanying condiment is hot soy sauce, just the right taste for dipping the cake.

Seasoned Fish Noodle Soup

This is a popular specialty that is easy to find in Da Nang. A full bowl of vermicelli has pork, pig ears, beef patties, spring rolls, herbs, papaya fibers or thinly sliced young jackfruit, and a cup of seasoning sauce. The indispensable spices of the Quang dish are the nutty taste of peanuts and the crunchy cake.

Enjoying vermicelli fish sauce at stalls, sidewalk stalls, or at the market will give you the most complete taste.

You can try noodles with fish sauce at Con Market or Han Market in the afternoon, priced from 15,000 to 30,000 VND per bowl.

Vermicelli with Grilled Meat

Like vermicelli with fish sauce, vermicelli with grilled meat is a familiar dish to Da Nang people. This dish is very easy to find, priced around 15,000 – 30,000 VND per bowl. Grilled pork vermicelli in Da Nang is served with soy sauce, a fatty and rich taste made from pork liver, ground meat, soy sauce, and some other ingredients.

Mixed Jackfruit Salad

Mixed jackfruit is a favorite dish of many people, the main ingredients are young jackfruit, pork skin, dried beef, along peanuts, mix well and then break off a piece of rice paper and scoop it up to eat. The price of each plate of mixed jackfruit is about 20,000 VND.

This dish is concentrated in the “snack village” on Bui Thi Xuan Street, under Tran Thi Ly Bridge, or the old lady’s mixed jackfruit shop in the alley on Ly Thai To Street – there is no sign but it is always crowded with customers. If you are a tourist, you should arrive before 5 p.m. to have a seat and learn more about this dish.

Snails in Da Nang are often prepared in many flavors: from stir-fried with coconut, stir-fried with lemongrass and chili to boil, all are fragrant and hot. This dish is served with sour and spicy papaya strips according to Central taste. The price per portion ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 VND.

Salted Yogurt

Salted yogurt costs 1,000 VND a jar. It’s a type of snack sold in a section at the foot of Tran Thi Ly bridge.

The shop owner usually brings out a tray of about 10 jars of yogurt with a plate of white salt. The price is calculated based on how many jars of yogurt you eat. Da Nang salted yogurt is soft, and not too fatty. At first, you will feel the salty taste of the salt, then the sweetness of the yogurt that lingers in your throat.

8. What to Buy as a Gift?

Mr. Chanh’s cake, Ba De’s cake, Cam Le sesame dried cake, My Khe seaweed, Nam O fish sauce, fresh seafood or dried squid, dried fish, etc. are famous specialties of Da Nang, easy to find, buy, and pack in your luggage.

If you want to buy souvenirs, you can choose silk paintings, embroidery, oil paintings, decorative items made of stone, porcelain, wood,… or stone art artifacts from Marble Mountains, clothes from silk and silk fabric.

Da Nang was the first destination I start exploring Vietnam. I enjoy coming here for the unbeatable value, delicious Vietnamese food, and fascinating things to see in the city’s streets. It is an amazing place that would not disappoint anyone.

As a developing coastal city, Da Nang is a growing tourist hotspot full of adventures and pristine sandy white beaches. It is voted by Forbes as 1 of the 6 most breathtaking beaches on the planet, making this an ideal beach gateway for visitors.

Alongside Da Nang’s beaches, there are also many more beautiful and scenic spots to slowly discover. It is even best to plan a day trip to visit surrounding attractions and the UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby such as Hoi An and My Son. A great beach city that is a great introduction for beginner travelers who are looking to travel in Vietnam.

Best time to visit Da Nang

The best time to visit Da Nang for tourists is from February through April. The weather is not too hot and slightly chilly. Many visitors flock from all over the world to enjoy the fine weather and all the outdoor activities the city has to offer.

From May to August, the weather is noticeably hotter and it is to reach up to 40 degrees. Sightseeing is quite exhausting at this time due to the high temperatures. The rainy season begins from September until January. Rainy season means that you need to expect more rain showers and the climate is relatively unpredictable.

How To Get To Da Nang City

It’s easily accessible to Da Nang city center from the Da Nang International Airport. It is about 10 minutes away from the city center. Generally, there are three ways to get into Da Nang city from Da Nang (DAD) International Airport.

Taxi is the fastest option with plenty of taxis waiting just outside the arrival hall. One-way of the 10-minute ride will cost around 110,000 VND depending on the distance

GRAB (South-East Asia of Uber) is another option when getting into Da Nang airport to the city. You can also use this e-hailing service when traveling in Da Nang. You just need to have the app ready on your smartphone before your travels and pinpoint exact pick-up and drop-off locations. A one-way 10 minutes trip will cost around 100,000 VND.

If you are going straight to Hoi An, you can pre-book the private transfer which will take you to your hotel in Hoi An directly. The price is reasonable and hustle-free without worrying too much about being cheated by the taxi scam.

Where To Stay

I would highly recommend staying in the beach resort if you are looking for relaxation and tranquility on Da Nang. There are many beautiful resorts and accommodations available for your perfect gateway in Danang. Most importantly, the accommodation price in Da Nang is relatively cheap for the world-class facilities and services.

We recommended Premier Village Danang Resort at Bac My An Beach and Four Points by Sheraton Danang at MyKhe Beach. Both are popular picks among travelers to Da Nang.

Alternatively, you can also consider staying in Star City Hotel & Apartments . It is perfectly situated along the bank of the Han River, offering a splendid panoramic view of the Han River, the Dragon and Han Bridges, and the city.

If you’re a fan of outdoor activities, relaxing on Da Nang beaches is one of the best things to do in Da Nang. The city is blessed with beautiful beaches and some are easily accessible right from the city itself.

Most of the beaches in Da Nang are open for tourists all day long and can be visited any time of the year. Grab your swimsuits, towels, and sunscreen and head to the beaches in Da Nang.

Among all the beaches in Da Nang, the most popular beaches are My Khe Beach and Non Nuoc Beach.

My Khe Beach is considered one of the best beaches on the planet by Forbes. It tends to be quite calm and you’ll love to go for a barefoot walk along the pristine shoreline. Many visitors come here for leisure activities such as sunbathing, jet-skiing, and surfing whilst enjoying local seafood dishes.

Visiting a local traditional market is always a great experience to get a fantastic glimpse into local life. In Da Nang, the Han Market or Chợ Hàn is a great example of the ASEAN market. This is a great place to interact with the local people for a taste of the local life and also find a good bargain at the Da Nang’s local markets.

Han Market is the central market, located in the heart of Da Nang city , near the Han River Bridge. The 2 stories covered building is operated since the French occupancy in the 1940s. There are hundreds of stalls in the markets and you can find almost everything here. From local produces handicrafts, T-shirts, accessories, and dried food to bring back home (nuts, coffee, pickles, and snacks). Even locals love visiting Han Markets to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats for their daily living.

Enjoy the shopping sphere and bargain for the best prices with the vendors. The price was reasonable in Han Market. But be prepared to be squished in the crowd.

If you are visiting Han Market in the morning, consider having an authentic Vietnamese breakfast to kick start your day. There is a small food court in the center of the market, selling the local Vietnamese dish you can think of.

From Mi Quang(Vietnamese turmeric noodles), pho (beef noodles soup), Banh Xeo (crispy pancake), Bun Thit Nuong (dry Bun with grilled pork ), Goi Cuon (Vietnamese spring rolls), and many more Vietnamese local foods. Each of the food should cost you no more than VND 30,000. A tasty yet cheap breakfast in Da Nang.

Nothing beat having a cup of Vietnamese coffee and Vietnamese noodles in the morning like a local. We love our bowl of pho with their local sauce in Han Market.

Da Nang Cathedral is one of the famous catholic churches in Vietnam thanks to its amazing design features. It is built by the French in 1923 and serves the local Catholic community until today. The cathedral has a signature pink-painted edifice as well as colorful stained-glass windows and an imposing bell tower topped with a rooster weathercock.

Entrance to Da Nang Cathedral is free of charge and you could visit this place irrespective of your religious orientations. It is highly recommended to visit the church once as a tourist if not on a day when Mass is held.

Also known as the Monkey Mountain, The Son Tra Peninsula is a breathtaking national park located in the northeastern part of Da Nang. It is about 13 km from the city center, away from the hustle and busy life of the city. The mountain is about 693 meters above sea level and could be reached by a 35-minute drive from the center of the city.

Son Tra Peninsula is spoilt with lush green, hilly landscapes and is surrounded by pristine beaches such as Bai Bac, Bai Nam, Bai But, and Tien Sa Beach. The winding road to the peak is a popular spot for hiking, cycling, and enjoying the natural scenery. You’ll find the verdant jungles and also spot rare species such as the red face monkeys.

Traveling to Son Tra Peninsula would be a good morning or afternoon excursion. If you’ve got a scooter or are planning on renting one while in Da Nang then going for a ride around Son Tra Mountain is a must-do in Da Nang. The views of the hills and the Pacific Ocean are fantastic, and it is very chill when driving to the mountain. This is the most experience you need to get when you come to Da Nang city for sure.

Da Nang Travel Tips : You can reach the peak by car, motorbike, and even a bike if you are strong enough. If you are a little scared of the traffic in Vietnam, you can always hire a taxi, or go on a private tour, which will take you to all of the most important places.

Despite the bustling Da Nang city center, the atmosphere here is very serene with locals praying in the morning and monks going about their daily lives. The entry to this place is free of charge, but remember to avoid it during the special occasions when it gets crowded with pilgrims. Many locals come to worship on the first and fifteenth of each month.

When walking up the steps in Linh Ung temple, you’ll find the tallest lady Buddha statue in Vietnam . It is one of the highlights when visiting the Son Tra Peninsula.

The landmark statue of Lady Buddha dominates the skyline view and is visible from many locations in Da Nang. It is 67 meters in height and 35 meters in diameter at its base. Standing at its base to admire the lady Buddha is awe-inspiring.

Da Nang possesses various beautiful bridges that’s why somehow this city is called The city of bridges. Among them, the Dragon bridge constructed in the shape of a golden dragon stands out. Locals believe the dragon symbolizes power, nobility, and good fortune.

Dragon Bridge is the longest bridge in Vietnam with 666-meter in length. The six-lane bridge is crossing the Han River, connecting the important places in Da Nang.

In the morning, the dragon bridge is busy with motorbikes and cars crossing over the bridge. It turns into one of the stunning views in Da Nang at night when the dragon is lit-on and illuminated with a colorful light display. The river reflects the sparkling and twinkling colors off the water which creates a charming scene.

Every weekend from 21:00 onwards , the dragon bridge will schedule for fire and water performance. You’ll see the dragon spit water and breathe fire from its mouth. It may not be a reason in itself for coming to Da Nang but once you’re here it would be a shame to miss it.

Just a few steps away from the Dragon Bridge is the Da Nang’s love bridge on the Han River. It is inspired by the famous love lock bridges around the world with lots of personalized locks that have been locked onto arc shape bridges. Many young couples travel to love bridge just to put their lock on the pier, hoping for a good relationship.

In the evening, the love shape lights are lit up along the waterfront, creating a romantic scene when strolling along the bridge. There are also restaurants, pubs, and bars all around the area that serve tourists at any time of day to enjoy the beautiful view.

Take a Day Trip To My Son Sanctuary

My Son Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of a collection of ruins by the kingdom of Champ. The ruins are about 1,300 years old now. It marks history and evokes the civilization they represent.

During your trip to My Son, you’ll see the remaining 70 temples which survive the Vietnam war, ornate carvings as well as impressive stone pillars and buildings. It is like a small version of Angkor Wat, Cambodia.

From the 16th century, Da Nang has steadily grown in size and importance from being a small trading port to becoming a large shipbuilding site in the 19th century.

Not too far from the coast of Da Nang is Cham Island, a place that not too many tourists get to, but well worth a visit.

This spectacular island is known for having some of the best snorkelling in Vietnam and is a perfect way to spend a day outside of the city.

There are a few different ways to get out there, but the best and most enjoyable way is to join a tour.

This one from Get Your Guide includes pick up from your hotel, the boat cruise, snorkeling and underwater walking (a pretty unique experience) and a delicious seafood lunch.

The Dragon Bridge is one of the best-known Da Nang attractions thanks to its unique design and interesting light show.

When the local government built it, they hired an artist to make it stand out, and the end result was this fantastic dragon-themed design.

Dragon Bridge is 666m in length and is the longest bridge of its kind in all of Vietnam.

Make sure you time your visit to Dragon Bridge to be a weekend because at 9 pm every Saturday and Sunday they turn the lights on and the dragon breathes actual fire!

The beautiful rainforest that juts out into the sea from the city of Da Nang is called the Son Tra Peninsula. At a size of over 4000 hectares, this place is massive!

Rent a scooter or motorcycle to ride along the newly-built road to the end and check out the nature reserve, and stop off to visit one of the most important religious sights in the area, Quan Am.

Keep an eye out for the red shanked duoc langars that live on the Son Tra Peninsula. They are quite beautiful if you catch a glimpse of one!

Son Tra is a perfect getaway from the city and perfect for those wondering what to do in Da Nang.

There are plenty of untouched beaches along the peninsula and some excellent viewpoints, making this one of the most pristine beautiful places to visit in Da Nang.

The beaches here are truly lovely and a real solid reason to visit Da Nang.

The long stretches of white sand are a perfect place to chill out on a hot afternoon, and with so much space it’s easy to find a spot all to yourself.

My Khe is the longest beach in Da Nang, and arguably one of the top ones in the entire country.

Head down to My Khe Beach for sunrise to see locals making the most of the start of the day, or come back in the afternoon for some delicious seafood served up in the restaurants.

If you’re a surfer, this is a perfect spot to come down to catch some small swell.

Vietnam has a fascinating indigenous history, and one of the best places to experience this is the area around Hoi An and Da Nang.

The Cham people lived in this region nearly 1000 years ago, and built some of the most iconic structures in all of Vietnam, such as the UNESCO World Heriage Site: My Son ruins .

If you love your history and want to check out another cool idea for what to do in Da Nang, head to the Cham Museum.

This museum has the largest collection of Cham artifacts in the country, and the statues and carvings you’ll find here are mind-blowing.

If you have more of an interest in Cham history, definitely book yourself into a tour of My Son ruins UNESCO World Heritage Site from Da Nang.

Made famous in an episode of the TV show, Top Gear, the Hai Van Pass has now become a bucket list item for thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts (and amateurs) and adventurers looking for alternative things to do in Da Nang.

This 21km mountain pass between Da Nang and Hue offers some of the most incredible ocean views in all of Vietnam.

A new highway tunnel that has been built to bypass the road ensures that traffic numbers now are low, although the ride can still be quite technical; especially if you are inexperienced or the weather turns bad.

Rent a scooter from town and leave early in the morning if you plan on being back in Da Nang the same day.

There are also a number of tour companies that can help you ride the Hai Van Pass if you aren’t a confident motorbike rider.

One of the best things to do when travelling around Vietnam is to explore the thousands of markets you can find in every town.

They are an assault on the senses, and it feels as though you can find just about anything you could ever need in them.

Fruits, meats and vegetables are common of course, but so are electrical equipment, housing supplies, health supplements and everything else under the sun.

In Da Nang the markets are truly amazing, but they can be overwhelming to wander through them if you’re not used to the hustle and bustle of Southeast Asian markets.

A great Da Nang activity is to join a cooking class that includes a visit to the markets.

On this tour you’ll be picked up from your accommodation and taken to the markets to pick up the ingredients you’ll need to make some delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

Afterwards you head to a real working farm so you can see how the locals tend to their fields, pick some more vegetables, and then it’s time to head to the kitchen!

You’ll be taught how to make a range of popular Vietnamese dishes, like pho, spring rolls and papaya salad. You can then take this new knowledge home with you to make your own food (and wow your friends)!

It’s a great day out, and one of the top things to do in Da Nang, Vietnam.

We didn’t know that Da Nang had such a happening food scene until we stayed at the amazing Funtastic Hostel, which is sadly now closed.

Owned by Summer from Danang Cuisine, one of the most famous food blogs in the country, she really opened our eyes to the culinary delights around the city.

Naturally, being so close to the ocean, fresh seafood is on many restaurants’ menus. There are plenty of awesome street food to try as well if you are on a budget. For our biggest and best recommendation go eat at Tam’s Pub And Surf Shop.

Make sure you have a few hours spare to listen to Tam’s fascinating stories of what life was like growing up during the war (and try her vegetarian burgers).

If you’re more of a street food type of person, then you’ll have no shortage of restaurants to eat at. Just cruise up and down the road and grab a chair at any of the busy spots!

You’ve probably seen a photo on Instagram of a long bridge high above a mountainous landscape, with huge concrete hands seemingly holding it up.

That spot is in the Ba Na Hills, and you can go visit it yourself!

Besides walking across the bridge and getting your Insta pics, a real highlight in Ba Na Hills is checking out the Linh Ung Pagoda and visiting a minority village.

How to Get to Da Nang

There are a whole bunch of different ways to get to Da Nang city. The easiest, and most efficient, is to fly in.

Da Nang city has an international airport that services a whole bunch of different countries, and has excellent connections with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Danang is probably the ‘most livable’ city for foreigners but still plagued by poor infrastructure, service, pollution, and industrial waste blatantly discharged into the seas/rivers.

The consequence of this are a myriad of food safety issues resulting in countless number of dead fish and other marine life washing up on beaches not long ago.

This combined with poor food safety standards and general lack of awareness/education on proper hygiene makes food consumption very those visiting.

Great blog. I will be in Da Nang for one day, arriving by cruise ship, Nov 3. What do you suggest we do? Is there a city tour company that might be independent of the ship? There will be 6 in our group. I would love to do a cooking class, but the guys won’t agree to that if they can’t also get their walking tour in.

Danang is a good place to travel, we have a lot of choice to go in Da Nang such as Bana Hills, Asian Park, Hai Van Pass, or go Hoi An – 35km far from Da Nang. I really love the seasides in Danang.

Just returned from 10-day trip to Vietnam, where we stayed the majority of days in Danang. Coolest side trip was definitely the Linh Ung Pagoda and the Son Tra Peninsula. We spent a night at the Pullman Beach Resort, which was an oasis of relaxation! Just loved the people, the vibe, the food and the whole essence of Danang!

I never was to Vietnam. But reading your post I think it was just a super place to see mountain. Is there the facility to climb mountain? I like to know about this. And also Marble Mountain is this is the real marble or looking like the marble.

Great Blog guys, What about a 7th being Ba Na Hills?i believe it has the longest cable car ride in the world! something like 5km, with glorious views and a theme park at the top along with cafes etc. The marble mountains was great too, seeing your photos makes me want to go back again..i remember driving a motorbike from the most northern end of China beach to Hoi An (about 30km) , and then stopping at Marble Mountains on the way home to the hotel, in about 38 deg heat, we were toasted by the end of the day,and then went for dinner at one of the seafood restaurants on China Beach with a few 333’s made it a perfect day

China Beach really is perfect. Because Da Nang has so many high-end resorts as well, the council spends a good amount of money on rubbish collecting, so the beach is really clean.

Guide to Da Nang, Vietnam: The Best 14 Things To Do

Da Nang (also spelled Danang) is a large, bustling city in Central Vietnam that offers spectacular mountain views, white sandy beaches, and plenty of activities to keep adults and kids entertained for hours! You’ll need at least three days in the city of Da Nang to explore all of the highlights, and even more to spend time relaxing at the beach or by your hotel pool.

Da Nang Travel Basics

Getting to da nang.

Da Nang is located in Central Vietnam and is home to the third busiest airport in Vietnam – Da Nang International Airport (DAD). The low-cost domestic airline, Vietjet, operates numerous flights into and out of the city each day.

Trains and buses are also available if you prefer to travel by land from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi but the distance is quite far. Tourist buses in Vietnam are generally “sleeper buses” that are double-decker and all of the seats are in a reclining position. If you are very tall or would rather not be forced to recline, confirm the bus type before you book your tickets or plan on taking the train.

We prefer Bookaway.com for booking buses and trains in Vietnam. It lets you see all of the routes and ticket prices in one place along with ratings and reviews from other travelers. Oddly enough, it’s actually cheaper to book train tickets on Bookaway than on the official Vietnam Railway website.

Best Time of Year to Visit Da Nang

You’ll find that Da Nang is the driest and has the most pleasant temperatures from February until April. The hot/dry season in central Vietnam lasts from April until October with high temperatures ranging from 95 – 104 °F. July is generally the hottest month of the year and during these summer months, the midday heat can be unbearable.

The winter months are cooler and you can expect some rainfall from September until January. There are generally typhoons during the month of November so it’s best not to plan your trip during that time frame.

Getting Around Da Nang

The best way to see all that the city of Da Nang has to offer is by motorbike. And because most of the area surrounding Da Nang is mountainous, you’ll find that a more powerful bike is better suited for this region of the country. We rented a Honda XR motorbike from Tigit Motorbikes and had no issues navigating the steep incline to get to the top of the Hai Van Pass .

Grab is also a convenient way to get around the city of Da Nang. It’s the Uber of Southeast Asia . Just download the app ( iPhone | Android ) on your phone and select your pick-up and drop-off points. Keep in mind it often takes longer than hailing a taxi, and the drivers occasionally cancel the ride, but it’s far easier than having to negotiate your taxi fare prior to departing. And it’s much cheaper!

You can load your credit card info or opt to pay cash for each ride. You’ll rarely pay more than a few dollars to get around the city. Of course, you’ll need the internet to use Grab and we always recommend buying a Vietnamese SIM card as soon as you arrive in the country. There are several counters at the Da Nang airport where you can purchase one.

The currency of Vietnam is the Dong (VND) and at the time of writing, the exchange rate was approximately 23,226 VND to $1 USD. So if we say that something costs 50,000 VND, that’s just about $2. And don’t worry about bringing a lot of cash, there are plenty of ATMs around Da Nang.

• Seafood is prevalent in Da Nang and the best place to get fresh, delicious seafood is La Plage . This beachfront restaurant inside the Sheraton Grand Danang Resort offers a casual atmosphere with gorgeous views of the sea. Their Signature Seafood Basket is not to be missed!
• Taco Ngon has a very modest menu – three meat choices and three topping choices. And all come in taco form. The concept is incredibly simple but the flavors are unlike any Mexican food you’ve ever tasted before (that’s because it’s not, the chef is actually Taiwanese). We tried them all and the pork with wasabi coleslaw was the shining star.
• We were excited to encounter another delicious Mexican restaurant in Da Nang –  Tacos Danang . While we love Vietnamese food, we often crave a little variety when traveling and we were happy to chow down on yummy nachos, quesadillas, and margaritas at this cute little restaurant.
• Happy Heart Cafe  is a darling spot to enjoy breakfast and a cup of coffee during your trip to Da Nang. Fresh salads, wraps, crepes, pizzas – no matter what you order, you can’t go wrong!
• Is it strange that in the three months I spent touring around Vietnam, my all-time favorite place to eat was a pizza restaurant? Yes, yes it is but seriously, Pizza 4P’s  is really that good. Their reasonably priced cheese platter is the perfect starter to one of their delicious wood-fired pizzas. The combinations are unique and oh so enticing – get the half and half option so you can sample more than just one!

The Best 14 Things to Do in Da Nang, Vietnam

1. stay at a swanky hotel on the beach.

The Sheraton Grand Danang Resort is a stunningly beautiful 5-star property located right on the Non Nuoc Beach. The resort features 258 spacious and impeccably decorated rooms, a state-of-the-art fitness center and relaxing spa, six food and beverage venues, and a gorgeous outdoor pool. In fact, at 820 feet in length, their pool is the longest infinity pool in Vietnam!

The Sheraton opened its doors in January of 2018 so everything inside and out has gorgeous, modern decor that is sparkling new! You’ll find the staff to be incredibly kind, helpful, and courteous, and you’ll appreciate the small touches like a delicious welcome drink and a cold towel to freshen up.

The beds at the Sheraton are so plush and comfortable that you won’t even want to get out of bed in the morning! But you should, because the buffet breakfast spread is spectacular. You’ll find everything from Vietnamese specialties to sushi, dim sum, fresh cheeses, warm pastries, and everything in between. Good thing the resort also has a fitness facility because you’ll most certainly be going back for seconds and thirds.

After breakfast, you can spend the day relaxing at the infinity pool that overlooks the pristine Non Nuoc beach. And end your day by watching the amazing sunset while enjoying a beer at their beachfront restaurant. From 5 pm – 7 pm, they offer discounted “sundowner” drinks. You are guaranteed to have an amazing, luxurious, and relaxing stay at the Sheraton Grand Danang Resort !

2. Lounge on the Beach

One of the top things to do in Da Nang involves not doing anything at all! Just lounge on the beach, soaking up the sun and sipping on ice cold beers. There are a few beaches to choose from:

My Khe Beach is a gorgeous stretch of coastline that stretches from the base of the Son Tra Peninsula to the Marble Mountains and is just a short three miles from the city center of Da Nang. This white sandy beach has calm, clear water that is perfect for swimming. There are plenty of lounge chairs available for rent and you’ll love relaxing with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other.

Non Nuoc Beach is south of My Khe and is filled with cute beachfront restaurants, luxurious resorts, and two international golf courses. It’s a bit further from the center of the city but you probably won’t want to leave your lavish beach resort anyway. Non Nuoc is far less crowded than My Khe so your lounging experience will be far more peaceful.

3. Enjoy the Water Activities

There are several exhilarating water activities available for a charge at My Khe Beach in Da Nang. You can rent a jet ski or see the view of the coastline from above in a parasail. Adults and children alike will have plenty of fun water sports options to choose from.

And if you stay at the Sheraton Grand Resort Danang, they offer sailboat and winder surfing instructions for any experience level. Or you can simply rent a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or surfboard and enjoy the ocean without an instructor.

4. See the Dragon Bridge Breathe Fire

There are several remarkable bridges that you should visit during a trip to Da Nang. But arguably the most impressive is the Rong Bridge which is 545 feet long, constructed of steel, and is in the shape of a massive fire-breathing dragon. And it actually does breathe fire – every  Saturday and Sunday evening at 9 pm sharp.

The waterfront area surrounding the head of the dragon starts to get crowded at around 8:30 pm, especially right on the bridge. So if you would like to have an unobstructed view, plan on arriving early to secure a spot. The dragon bridge breathes fire twice, each time separated by about two minutes. And then it breathes water twice, again separated by about two minutes. Depending on the wind direction, if you are standing on the bridge, prepare to get soaked.

The fire display is unique and one of the top things to do during your trip to Da Nang!

5. Hike Around the Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are located about 20 minutes south of Da Nang, towards Hoi An. This area is made up of five marble and limestone mountains, each named for an element. They are Thuy Son (water), Kim Son (metal), Moc Son (wood), Hoa Son (fire), and Tho Son (earth). All five of the mountains have interesting natural caves and tunnels to explore, as well as Buddhist temples built into them.

Thuy Son Mountain is the most popular and it’s a steep 150 steps to the top. If you’d rather not make the climb, there is also an elevator that you can take. Here you’ll find three caves and a secret “road to heaven” where you can hike through one of the caves to the peak where spectacular views await. There is a trail that leads down from the top if you’d rather not go back through the cave.

But be sure to arrive early to beat the heat and the crowds. The marble rock inside of the caves is quite slippery so shoes with traction are recommended.

6. Shop in the Da Nang Markets

Han Market  and  Con Market are both good options if you are looking for designer knock-offs or souvenirs to bring back home. Be prepared to negotiate prices. Common treasures to purchase from Vietnam include colorful lanterns that light up the town of Hoi An, lacquerware, straw purses, silk robes, and wood carvings.

If you are interested in purchasing a marble statue, there are plenty of shops around the entrance to Thuy Son Mountain selling impressive marble (and resin) statues of all shapes and sizes.

7. Spend a Day at Sun World Ba Na Hills

The Sun World Resort in the Ba Na Hills is home to the now-famous Golden Bridge. Construction was completed in 2018 and already visitors are flocking to photograph this bridge that appears to be held up by two massive, ancient hands. It has become one of the more popular sites to visit in Da Nang.

A cable car will take you up to the massive resort that sits in the hills, 4,800 feet above sea level. The Sun World complex includes not only the Golden Bridge but also a French village, a wine cellar, multiple impressive temples and pagodas, an alpine slide, a fantasy park, a funicular, and multiple restaurants serving up food from all over the world.

8. Motorbike Around the Son Tra Peninsula

The Son Tra Peninsula (aka Monkey Mountain) is located just outside of Da Nang’s city center. In fact, when you are lounging on My Khe Beach you can see the majestic Goddess of Mercy, an impressive 228 feet in height, from across the bay. This peninsula has a conservation order that has kept it from getting over-developed so you’ll get to enjoy its unspoiled natural beauty.

The total road trip is about 25 miles, about 10 of which crosses the Son Tra Mountains. As with the Hai Van Pass, you’ll also want a more powerful motorbike to make this journey, especially if you plan on riding double.

There are several religious monuments on the peninsula. Ling Ung Pagoda is a significant pilgrimage destination for Buddhists and the Goddess of Mercy statue to a symbol to protect the coastline from rough seas. The peninsula also has numerous beautiful and unspoiled beaches including Buddha Beach, Bai Rang Beach, Bai Nom Beach, and Bai Nam Beach.

If you stop at the religious monuments and take some time to relax on the beaches, this trip will take you most of the day.

9. Visit the Mỹ Sơn Ruins

The ancient Mỹ Sơn Ruins are just west of Hoi An and about an hour’s drive from Da Nang. It’s easy to take a day trip to My Son from either Hoi An or Da Nang. Mỹ Sơn was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries and its spiritual origins are in Indian Hinduism.

While not as impressive as Bagan in Myanmar or Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Mỹ Sơn has its own unique charm. The lush vegetation provides a vibrant backdrop for the ancient brick buildings.

The preserved archeological site is small but easy to walk around in a few hours. And the loop trail is fairly flat. But be sure you get to Mỹ Sơn early to avoid the crowds and the heat. Or bring an umbrella to shade you from the harsh midday sun.

10. Take a Day Trip to Hoi An

The darling town of Hoi An is just a short 45-minute drive south of Da Nang. If you’re short on time, you can just go for the day but we would absolutely recommend spending a few days in this quaint town. The pedestrian-friendly downtown area is filled with historical buildings painted a vibrant yellow and colorful lanterns hung from every tree.

You can get a tour of the old town on a cyclo and then once the sun starts to set, you’ll love taking a short boat ride on the river. The old city really comes alive in the evenings with people filling the street and colorful lanterns lighting up the entire area. It’s very crowded, especially on the Cau An Hoi bridge and throughout the night market.

11. Go for a Ride at Asia Park

Asia Park is owned by the same company that operates Sun World so you can expect a similar amount of fun for the whole family. There is an amusement park full of rides and attractions that kids of all ages will love, beautiful gardens, interesting architecture, and plenty of dining options.

You can spot the giant Ferris wheel from pretty much anywhere along the riverfront. It’s a highlight of the park and definitely worth checking out for the views from the top!

12. Drive over the Hai Van Pass

The Hai Van Pass is famous for many reasons – cultural, historical, and geographical. Plus, it’s arguably one of the most beautiful coastal routes in all of Vietnam. The most popular way to see visit the mountain pass is to rent a motorbike and cruise up the winding road on your own.

The views of the bay from the very top of the mountain are absolutely spectacular. Plus there are plenty of quaint stops along the way to rest and enjoy an iced coffee with the best views!

13. Go Snorkeling in the Cham Islands

If you are looking to explore the underwater beauty that Da Nang has to offer, you’ll want to book a snorkeling tour in the Cham Islands. It’s a cluster of eight islands where you’ll find gorgeous beaches, amazing diving and snorkeling, and delicious seafood. The crystal clear turquoise water is home to vibrantly colored coral and marine life.

14. Enjoy a Drink with a View

Da Nang has a really spectacular skyline. To the east is the beautiful coastline, and the Han River runs through the center of the city with bridges that light up as the sun goes down. The best place to soak in the views of the city is from far above, at a rooftop bar or restaurant. Check out one of our favorites:

Although many people only choose to spend a day or two in Da Nang this city has so much to offer. For the best experience, you’ll want to spend at 3 days in Da Nang, and even more, if you’re using this place as a base to take some day trips.

What are the best day trips from Da Nang?

Both Hue and Hoi An can be visited on a day trip . So if you’re not planning to stay in those cities you can visit them from Da Nang. However, you’re going to want to spend a full day (or near enough) at each. If that’s the case, allow at least five days here so you’re not rushing around! That will give you plenty of time to visit all the places in this Da Nang itinerary!

Lady Buddha is the tallest Buddha statue in the country so as you can imagine, it’s pretty impressive! The statue is located on the Son Tra Peninsula and is just 8.5 miles (14 km) from the city center of Da Nang.

Boasting a height of nearly 220 feet (67 meters) and a diameter of 114 feet (35 meters), its size is the equivalent of a 30-story building. Now, that’s something you don’t see every day! Due to its sea-facing location, you’ll get impressive views of the surrounding area. If it’s a clear day, you’ll even get striking views of Son Tra, The Marble Mountains, and Da Nang city.

This fantastic tour will take you to the Lady Buddha, as well as Monkey Mountain and Am Phu Cave. It includes lunch, hotel pick-up and drop-off, some entrance fees, and an English-speaking guide!

2. Head to Ba Na Hills

For starters, this is where you’ll find the iconic ‘Golden Hands’ or Golden Bridge that’s taken over Instagram. There’s also an awesome cable car ride that you’ll take to the top, and you can visit the miniature French village too!

When it comes to visiting Ba Na Hills independently you can either catch a taxi or shuttle bus. Your other option is to take a tour and there are plenty of options! 3. Relax on My Khe Beach

If you’re heading to Da Nang for a beach vacation then you won’t be short of options. Some of the best beaches in the area include Non-Nuoc, Bac My An, Son Tra, and Thanh Binh. However, My Khe Beach is by far the most popular!

It’s a lot more developed than many of the other beaches in the area. This is due to American soldiers seeking some R&R here whilst fighting in the Vietnam-US War.

Boasting pristine white sands, crystal-clear (and warm) waters, and swaying palm trees, it’s the definition of tropical paradise. Whether you’re just looking to glimpse at its beauty, or you’d prefer to spend a few hours here, this isn’t a place you want to leave off your Da Nang itinerary!

You’ll generally find that most hotels are located in this area so you’ll have easy access to My Khe Beach. Unlike many of the beaches in Southeast Asia, it’s free to visit and extremely clean. If you don’t have the chance to visit Mui Ne , then this is the place to visit for some beach time.

4. Wander around the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture

Visiting the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture is one of the best things to do in the city. The museum was built in the early 1900s and is home to the largest collection of Cham sculptures and artwork on Earth. Now, that’s a pretty big reason to visit so don’t leave it off your Da Nang itinerary!

For those who don’t know, the Kingdom of Champa used to control South and Central Vietnam until 1697. In the late 15th century, the Champa empire declined and was eventually dissolved in 1832.

What remains can be found in this museum, and there are nearly 300 sculptural works to be seen here. This date back to between the 7th and 15th centuries so you’ll be admiring a part of Vietnam’s history.

Upon your visit to the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, you can purchase an English-language guidebook that will help to explain the importance of the sculptures.

5. Take a day trip to the Marble Mountains

The five Marble Mountains are named after the five elements (metal, water, wood, fire, and earth). They hold special significance to the people of Vietnam as they’re known to be a spiritual site!

To climb to the top, you’ll have to walk up a fair few stairs. However, the views from the top are certainly worth it. You can also explore the network of caves that are found underneath, with Huyen Khong being the largest of the caves. If you’d prefer not to visit on your own then you can take a tour of the Marble Mountains . You’ll get to explore this spectacular wonder, before heading to Hoi An Ancient Town. This way, all your transport is included and your dinner is too!

6. Walk over the Dragon bridge

No Danang itinerary is complete without walking over the city’s iconic Dragon Bridge. This is one of the coolest bridges you’ll ever see, as if you hadn’t guessed by the name – it depicts a flying dragon. The design of this dragon was inspired by the Ly dynasty and is an epic sight to see.

The Dragon Bridge spans across the Han River and is an impressive 2,185 feet (666 meters) long. There are six vehicle lanes and two lanes for pedestrians so it’s very wide, and it’s thought to have cost around $88 million which is crazy!

The incredible design isn’t the only thing that draws people to the Dragon Bridge. This bridge is home to 15,000 LED lights and is lit up at night time, which is one of the best times to visit. If you’re in Da Nang on a Saturday or Sunday, then you’re in for an even more magical experience. On the weekends at 9 pm, the bridge has a fire and water performance where the dragon breathes fire!

7. Admire the views from Sơn Trà Mountain

Son Tra Mountain is located out on the Son Tra Peninsula and is also known as Monkey Mountain. Often referred to as the ‘Green Lung of Da Nang’ this towering mountain is covered in the lush forest so it’s undeniably beautiful.

The Mountain is located at around 2,2800 feet (695 meters) above sea level so as you can imagine, the views from the top are rather impressive. Not only will you be treated to striking views of Da Nang, but you’ll get to admire the city’s breathtaking coastline too. During your time here, you’ll also want to leave some time free to visit some of the attractions including the iconic Lady Buddha.

This amazing 4-hour tour will not only take you to the Marble Mountains but you’ll get to explore the Son Tra Peninsula. Here, you’ll get to admire the impressive views, visit Lady Buddha, and marvel at Son Tra Linh Ung Pagoda!

8. Drive some of the iconic Hai Van Pass

The Hai Van Pass is one of the most scenic roads in Vietnam making it a must for any Da Nang itinerary. Known as the ‘Ocean Cloud Pass’, this road is a 21 km long pass that connects Hue and Da Nang. Aside from getting spectacular sea views, the pass also runs through the Annamite Range.

This road has become a popular tourist attraction and many people choose to hire a scooter so they can drive part of the pass. Due to a new road being built in 2005, you won’t experience much traffic along this route either which is always a bonus.

For those who are experienced in driving a scooter, you can head out on this Hai Van Pass adventure if you don’t fancy taking on the drive by yourself. Or, this tour also includes a private scooter driver if you’d prefer to sit in the back seat. Either way, this isn’t an experience you want to miss.

9. Try a cooking class

If there’s one thing Vietnam is known for it’s its delicious food, and Da Nang is no different! You’ll find endless restaurants in the city so there are lots of foodie options. Two of the most popular dishes are Banh Nam and Banh Bot Loc – both are a kind of rice dumpling cake.

However, to make the most of your foodie experience in Da Nang you’ll want to take a cooking class and there are plenty of options!

This unique home cooking class is a great choice as it’s run by a local family so offers a very authentic experience. During this class, you’ll get to visit a market to pick up fresh ingredients, and then you’ll cook four Vietnamese dishes. You’ll also get to try the local coffee!

One of the best things about this tour is that it’s limited to 9 people so you won’t have to worry about an overcrowded experience. If you’ve got the time, I’d recommend including a cooking class on your Da Nang itinerary!

10. Have some fun at Asia Park

Asia Park is another quirky theme park that’s owned by the Sun World Group. It’s located on the edge of the Han River and is known for its iconic attractions, cool rides, and diverse cuisine.

The park is split up into three main zones; a modern outdoor park, a cultural park, and the Sun Wheel – one of the city’s most popular attractions! It marks the entrance to Asia Park and is one of the highest Ferris wheels in the world at an impressive 377 feet (115 meters) high. The views from the top are incredible, and the wheel is also lit up at night.

Another popular area of this theme park is the Cultural Park which features replicas of cultural landmarks and historical sites from all over Asia! If you’re simply looking to have some fun, then there are a couple of rides to try out too.

The park is open from 3 pm – 10 pm as its primary focus is children. Just keep that in mind, because you won’t be able to visit in the morning or during midday which many people usually do with theme parks!

11. Take a day trip to My Son

There are plenty of day trip opportunities from this coastal city, but a visit to My Son is a must for any Da Nang itinerary! My Son Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s situated within a rainforest.

Built between the 4th and 13th centuries CE, this place offers you the chance to explore Vietnam’s history. At around 1600 years old, these ruins show the influence of the Champa Kingdom and you’ll get to see this through the impressive tower temples that remain.

My Son actually used to have around 70 structures. These were mostly dedicated to the deities of Krishna, Shiva, and Vishnu. 12. Explore the Imperial City of Hue on a tour

Hue is another popular city in Vietnam, and many people choose to stay here for 2-3 days. However, if you’re short of time then you can always visit on a day trip!

You’ll find plenty of awesome things to do here like visiting the abandoned waterpark, exploring the Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh, and admiring Thien Mu Pagoda. You’ve also got the Mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc and the Perfume River!

However, the city’s most famous attraction is the Imperial Citadel, or the ‘Imperial City’ as it’s also known. It’s an enclosed city within Hue itself and was once the imperial capital of the country during the Nguyễn dynasty. Inside, you’ll find so much to explore but don’t forget about the Purple Forbidden City!

This makes it the place to visit if you’re looking to snorkel or admire the area’s wildlife. Not only that, but this island is undeniably beautiful with pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation.

Although the Cham Islands are located off the coast of Hoi An, this snorkeling tour will pick you up in Da Nang. You’ll then be taken to the islands on a traditional Vietnamese boat. Whilst on the island, you can snorkel, dive, try underwater walking or simply relax in the hammocks. The choice is yours!

If you’ve got some extra time in Da Nang, then I’d definitely consider heading to this tropical paradise!

14. Admire the architecture of Da Nang Cathedral

Da Nang Cathedral is one of the most beautiful religious buildings you’ll come across in Vietnam. It was the only church built here during the French colonial period, so as you can imagine the architecture is unique. This cathedral has been around since 1924 and is in fantastic condition considering the subsequent wars that would follow.

The first thing you’ll notice about Da Nang Cathedral is that it’s pink! In fact, it gives off very similar vibes to Tan Dinh Church in Ho Chi Minh City ! Although the exterior is extremely impressive, make sure you head inside too if the church is open.

Boasting breathtaking stained glass windows, engraved motifs, and impressive statues that depict events from the Bible, there’s so much to see here. Even better, the cathedral is free to enter but you’ll want to research the mass times before your visit.

If you’re not planning to stay in Hoi An then you should definitely include a day trip on your Danang itinerary! This city was once an ancient trading port that used to link China and Japan with the rest of Asia, and there’s still evidence of this port today. Considering this trading port dates back to the 15th and 19th centuries – that’s pretty impressive.

The most popular area to visit is the Old Quarter. Here, you’ll find ancient yellow buildings, colorful lanterns, and stone roads making it extremely charming. You can also head to one of the tailor shops, take a boat trip along the Thu Bon River, or visit the Precious Heritage Project!

How to Get Around Danang

First of all, you’ll need to reach the city. Now, you can either travel overland from some of the other cities or fly to Da Nang International Airport. If you opt for the latter, then you can either catch a taxi or bus into the city center.

If you’d prefer to have your transport organized in advance, you can book a private shuttle . This is especially handy after a long flight, and you won’t have to barter down your taxi price in the airport.

Once you’ve arrived in the city and found your accommodation, there are a couple of ways to get around the city. One of the most popular ways to get around is b y taxi or motorcycle taxi, but you may need to negotiate the price.

There are a couple of public bus routes you can use but this method of transport isn’t advanced, not compared to the likes of Hanoi or Hoi Chi Minh anyway. Lastly, you can rent a motorbike for a couple of days if you wish – this will be especially handy, as some of the sights in this article are located out of the city.

Best Time to Visit Da Nang, Vietnam

The best time to visit Da Nang is considered to be January-May as this is when the Dry Season takes place . The Dry Season actually lasts until August but in the months running up to it, temperatures can reach up to 104°F (40°C). Due to the intense heat and humidity, you’ll want to visit before this if possible.

Between January and May, the temperature fluctuates between 68-91°F (20-33°C) with higher temperatures being encountered during March and May. Before these months, the climate is relatively cold and dry and you won’t encounter too much rain either.

The Wet Season in Da Nang falls between September to December and is generally split into three phases. September is the month for typhoons, while October and November encounter the most rainfall. If you’re traveling at this time of year, then December is by far the best time to visit during the wet season!

My daughter and I have four days in HCM and four days in Da Nang (early November). As I’m 79 I am not sure the tunnels would be that suitable! Any tips please. Last year we visited Hanoi and Sapa and Halong Bay and went to the all day Sunday market boardering China. Truly amazing. We loved Vietnam and its people so much and that is why we are doing a little of the Southern part.

Hey Jennie, it is so great you loved Vietnam so much that you are going back to explore more. I loved Vietnam too. I still recommend the tunnels as it is a very educational place to visit, even if you decide not to go inside the tunnel, which you won’t be missing anything, since you only get to see a small part of it. But you still can learn from the site and how the lived there during the war. I recommend you take the tour on the Mekong Delta, as you will also get to see many interesting sites, and the river market. Safe Travels,

Da Nang Guide: A Low-key City in Central Vietnam

Da Nang is one of the most popular cities for travel in Vietnam. Yet it manages to look low-key and calm despite its bustling tourism. Here’s everything to know about it – the Da Nang travel guide .

We stayed here for only two days and felt that there weren’t many things to do in Da Nang. But as we visited its beaches, strolled central Da Nang with a touch of nightlife, and passed the Dragon Bridge, we took it back. It wasn’t Ho Chi Minh City with all the pompous nightlife, but the laidback air was a sweet change.

Two days wasn’t sufficient for Da Nang. The places in the city as well as around it simply needed more time! Here goes my Da Nang Travel Guide :

Da Nang Travel Guide: First Impressions

We landed in Da Nang one late night and got a cab to our hotel by the shore through the quiet streets. I’m not sure if it was the stay, but even the following day – the streets were calm and only a few tourists walked the streets. Mind you, we were in Hanoi earlier – the busy capital of Vietnam.

Later we realized most visitors were laid back here. Also unlike other cities, many visitors were Vietnamese locals themselves for Da Nang’s amazing beaches and the local street food markets.

Apart from the beaches, the nightlife, and the markets of Da Nang – it was the whole vibe itself where most hotels were lined up by the shore road with the smell of the sea not far away. Most places to visit when in Da Nang are mostly day trips away from the city. Some are Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountain, and Hoi An.

Da Nang Travel Guide: Common FAQs

FAQs usually come in at the last, but these are general things to know before you go:

How Many Days to Stay in Da Nang?

It’s best to stay 3-4 days in Da Nang. Most people, like us, stay only for 2 days and it is sufficient to cover the main attractions including a small trip to Hoi An as well. But it’s best to experience the cafes, and beaches, and even stay a day in Hoi An.

Two days is sufficient but it makes for a more rushed trip and tight itinerary. Also, with an extra day – it helps to cover the lesser-known places like Hue or go for an extra activity like snorkeling.

How to Get around

Book a rental scooter! This is the cheapest and most efficient way to commute to Da Nang. Make sure to bring along your driver’s license.

To visit Ba Na Hills , we got ourselves a scooter for 130,000 Dong per day and it was the best decision! The only downside is wearing an annoying raincoat when required. For long-distance commutes, chartered bus/car transfers are affordable.

This is great for solo travelers where you book direct transfers through travel websites and avoid the rental vehicle hustle. The last option is taxi services like Grab – an app similar to Uber. Gladly, it worked fine in Da Nang.

Da Nang Estimated Trip Budget

Da Nang Travel Guide : For budget travelers, the only high costs are the attractions themselves. Ba Na Hills ticket begins from 900,000 VND and the basket boat ride in Hoi An costs 100,000 – 200,000 VND. Other attractions that cost are the Marble Mountain and night boat rides (Hoi An). For food, expect to spend anywhere around 200,000 VND per person/day.

Transport costs : As most visiting places aren’t walkable distances, a rental scooter is the best option for solo travelers. We paid 130,000 VND /day for ours. The main places to visit in Da Nang are the beaches, Dragon Bridge, Lady Buddha, and Bach Dang Walking Street. There isn’t anything more. As the rest are walkable distances from these places, it makes a cab a viable option.

For long-distance transfers like Hoi An, Ba Na Hills, Hue, or My Son – I recommend using shuttle/private transfers from Da Nang as they’re safer and affordable too.

Where to Stay longer – Da Nang or Hoi An?

Da Nang is sweet. But I’d pick staying in Hoi An any day! However, it depends on whether you like a village experience with bicycle rides through farmlands (Hoi An) or a more built-up area with more nightlife, markets, and stays by the beach (Da Nang).

For eateries, both Hoi An and Da Nang have a variety of cafes to hop in for the evenings. While the beaches and Ba Na Hills are closer to Da Nang, one can explore Hoi An’s beautiful canals and candlelight lanterns floating on the Hoai River every night.

Though some say Hoi An is a one-day trip, you’ll see a lot of people residing for their entire vacations here. When you visit Da Nang, opt to stay a night in Hoi An. The place is anyhow only an hour’s drive away!

Accommodation in Da Nang

This is the best part of Da Nang, there are plentiful accommodations for all types of visitors. Unlike backpacker hostels in Hanoi or Saigon, even the backpackers’ hostels were more peaceful here. We stayed at a mid-ranged hotel as well as a budget hostel here. The hotel had the beach before us while the hostel was a more lively place!

Contrary to my usual perspective, I felt the luxury resorts in Da Nang had more unique experiences to offer and thus worth a shot – especially for couples and families. Here are the most popular hotels and my favorite handpicked hostel in Da Nang.

Luxury Resorts

InterContinental Sun Peninsula Resort : A 5-star hotel on the northeast end of the Da Nang with a 700-meter private beach, it’s one of the top luxury hotels in Vietnam with its Michelin-starred chef!

Mikazuki Resorts and Spa

Another 5-star hotel in Da Nang that offers a genuine Japanese experience with its theme and activities. The resort also features its own indoor and outdoor waterpark on its 13 hectares of land!

Hyatt Regency Da Nang Resort

Da Nang’s Hyatt boasts more of a homely touch by the coast with its tranquil nature while possessing comfortable rooms, living areas, private pools, and also Asia’s biggest kids club zone. It’s also a more affordable luxury option for families.

Pullman Da Nang Resort

This 5-stay resort is the closest to the city and it’s the ideal choice for families with comfortable facilities with reasonable rates. It’s best for couples and also has its own Kids’ club.

Cheap Backpacker Hostels

I didn’t expect it but Da Nang has quite a variety of backpacker hostels. Some are close to the city’s coast and others are far into the city. The best part is a modest hostel ranges only between 90,000 VND – 150,000 VND! For location, the beachside is preferable as the waters become accessible anytime.

Unlike quiet resorts, backpacker areas here burst with energy and life. Moreover, they’re located on streets with a variety of cafes, breakfast places, and bars.

Best Things to Do in Da Nang, Vietnam

With Ba Na Hills and Hoi An in this list of places to visit, consider this the Da Nang itinerary! So Help yourself with this list of Things to do in Da Nang:

1. Start with the Lady Buddha

The Lady Buddha in Da Nang- Son Tra Peninsula, fairly visible from the beach stretches (on the left), is a large 67-meter-high white statue.  It’s something like the Statue of Liberty in New York. However, there is a whole park, the Linh Ung Pagoda, and many other smaller statues and structures to see here.

It’s free to visit and as it isn’t far from most accommodations alongside the coast, make it your first stop to visit. Also, it opens at 6 a.m which should make it a sweet start to the day. It takes no more than an hour (or two for photo/history fanatics) to get around the Lady Buddha and Linh Ung Pagoda.

*Note: Don’t confuse the Linh Ung Pagoda, there are two of them in Da Nang – one with Lady Buddha and the other by Marble Mountain.

2. Check out the Beaches of Da Nang

Check out the beach if it’s still morning or keep it for the evening. Da Nang coastal side afternoon heat is enough to burn you. The best part about Da Nang is one whole side is a long stretch of beaches with clean sands, palm trees, and surfboard shops.

On the maps, the complete east side of Da Nang is beaches. Some differ more or less from the others. Some popular ones to name are My Khe Beach (closest to the city), Tien Sa Beach, Non-Nuoc Beach, and Bac My An Beach.

Keep in mind that most of these beaches run on the same coast. So they are more or less the same. The entire stretch is more known by the name – My Khe Beach. The lesser visited beaches are Nam O Beach and Tien Sa Beach on the north end of Da Nang.

While Tien Sa is another super-clean secluded beach with white sands, Nam O Beach stands as the most unique with vibrant green rocks on the shores!

Go Surfing!

Da Nang Travel Guide . Surfing is another option in Da Nang. It isn’t as popular, but some preferred beaches to surf are the My Khe Beach stretch and Nom O Point. According to Nomad Surfers, the best time to surf in Da Nang is September to March.

3. Don’t miss the Dragon Bridge’s evening show!

The Dragon Bridge is a must-visit in Da Nang. In fact, it’s one of the first things you see when you search for Da Nang. While it looks amazing in the daytime, the night view is unbeatable.

The whole 660-meter bridge is shaped just like a dragon with a head and tail on either end. The best part is the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) evenings (from 9 pm) when the dragon head starts breathing fire and water.

Watching from afar, we could see the vibrant lights dancing in harmony as the dragon breathed. Don’t look up the videos and give yourself a spoiler alert. I assure you, it’s worth it!

4. Explore the Bach Dang street

The Bach Dang Street on the west bank of the Han River with the Dragon Bridge in walkable distance, is also popular as a walking street. Lying in the heart of Da Nang, this ever-crowded street is known for hotels, street food markets, restaurants, and bars. It’s a pure commercial hub and even popular among the locals.

We stood here before the bridge and found the street alive with lights, music, and chit-chats down the pavements as far as our eyes could see. A ferry stood tied to the port to which people waited impatiently to enter. They carried no bags. Then I realized, it was a boat restaurant!

Even if you aren’t shopping, Bach Dang Walking Street is worth the experience for some amazing natural shots.

5. Have street food at Da Nang’s night market

Da Nang’s night market falls opposite Bach Dang Street (East side of Hans River). Also called the Chợ Đêm Sơn Trà (I can’t pronounce this either, but Google Maps helps), this is the cheery market with more tourists flocking in.

While it’s similar to most night markets with handicrafts, street delicacies, shopping stalls, and even large live shows – the main feature here is the paper lanterns. Some things to explore here are the variety of beer and local steamed seafood.

Some other popular night markets to check out in Da Nang are Helio Night Market and An Thuong Night Market.

6. Drive out to Marble Mountains

Da Nang Travel Guide – Marble Mountain lies between Da Nang and Hoi An. The reason it’s plural is because it’s a cluster of hills made of marble and limestone. Surrounding the entrance and the mountains are a range of marble shops that sell marble handicraft souvenirs to even life-size marble statues!

Weary of the ascend, we slowly climbed the steep stone steps up and curled around the peak. As we explored, there was so much to see here. The dark caves, dozens of Buddhist and Hindu idols (carved in Marble again), and even a tall pagoda!

My favorite was when we began trekking through a narrow dark cave feeling the smooth marblestone beneath us and then finally onto the peak of the mountain. We could see the shore and the city from here.

7. Go Shopping at Con Market

This is another must-visit in Da Nang. It’s not the shopping – Cho Con Market in Da Nang is the biggest market in the central region of Vietnam. It’s a super-busy commercial complex and is worth the experience for travelers.

Built back in 1940, the Cho Con Market complex today boasts its 2000 stalls over several buildings in and around the same area. Nevertheless, unlike the night market, the shopping stores close at 7:30 pm. So it’s best to visit early evening or late afternoon. It makes for an authentic experience of local markets, unlike touristy ones.

Da Nang Travel Guide protip : Some must-try local cuisines here are Banh Canh and Mi Quang(Vietnamese noodles), Banh Beo (water fern cakes from Central Vietnam), and Kem Bo (avocado ice cream)!

8. Stroll the Ba Na Hills

Visiting the Ba Na Hills is half or a one-day trip and it’s probably the most expensive part of Da Nang’s itinerary. But Ba Na Hills is where you get to see the world-famous Golden Bridge with godlike hands holding out the bridge.

When we visited SunWorld Ba Na Hills , we were disappointed that it was a theme park. A family theme park with roller coasters and fun fair games? Ugh. But then we realized there’s so much more to Ba Na Hills.

You see Ba Na Hills, also called the French Village, was built by the French during colonization as a “vacation spot”. Thus the French Village is today a vacation-cum-historical spot. Read more on my Ba Na Hills review .

9. Take a day trip to Hoi An

To describe Hoi An, it’s a sleepy yet touristy village with canals, paddy fields, and a variety of eateries, cafes, and bars. There are such clique eateries to discover. There’s even a whole community for Da Nang’s Gay Guide!

Nonetheless, the days go slow with rental cycles around the fields while the nights become magical with paper lanterns floating in the river here.

One can take a boat ride here through the vibrant lanterns at night. But the must-visit in Hoi An is the basket-boat ride. This is a slow ride through the narrow canals available in multiple parts of Hoi An.

Da Nang Travel Guide protip : From Da Nang, Hoi An is 30 km making for a day trip. But I highly recommend staying the night in Hoi An to experience this paper lantern ceremony along with the eateries and live music cafes.

10. Snorkel at  Cham Island

Snorkeling at Cham Island makes for an offbeat activity in Da Nang. Like Ba Na Hills, this is a 1-day trip as it’s 50 km from Da Nang. However, it is much closer to Hoi An. It takes a boat ride from Hoi An (Cua Dai Pier) to get to Cham Island.

Cham Island is again a small tourist destination. Though there aren’t any large hotels aside from the little homestays, you’ll find beaches, local seafood restaurants, and of course snorkeling. Snorkeling is a must-visit when on Cham Island.

For snorkeling, they take you to the clear parts of shallow waters with colorful coral life visibly rich underneath your eyes!

11. Go on a Day Trip to Hue

Along with the serene touches of nature and village life like Hoi An and Cham Island, Hue is most known for the Imperial City Citadel.

Held by the Nguyen Dynasty Emperors over 200 years ago, the Citadel is surrounded by moat and stone walls. Today, it houses palaces, shrines, and large gardens inside and is referred to as the Forbidden Purple City.

While history fanatics would stay longer, half a day around Hue should also be sufficient. The only downside is that it’s 100 km North of Da Nang (the complete opposite direction from Hoi An and Cham Island).

As a part of the coast of the South China Sea, Da Nang has served a long history as a French colonial port. Da Nang was also where the French first landed to conquer the country. During the war of Vietnam, Da Nang was used as a major airbase for US and South Vietnamese forces. During that time, the city’s airport was one of the busiest in the world.

Before Western contact, Da Nang was once a part of the Kingdom of Champa . Dong Duong, a modern village that is just outside of the city, used to be the capital of the kingdom. During the late 11 th century, the Dai Viêt Kingdom began to lay claim to the land and by the end of the 15 th century, most Cham territories had been annexed.

In today’s world, traces of the past can be seen clearly in Da Nang and the surrounding area. Within 65 miles (105 kilometers) of the city, there are multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some of the most popular sites for tourists include Old Town in Hoi An , the My Son ruins, and the Imperial City of Hue .

Close to the center of Da Nang, historical artifacts from the previous centuries are housed in the Museum of Cham Sculpture.

Though you’re steps away from world-class seafood, you can also opt for modern, healthy takes on Vietnamese specialties at the on-site restaurant. To unwind, head to the pool or take a yoga class. 

What to Do 

My Khe Beach

While many hotels in the area have private beaches, it’s also worth visiting My Khe, a bustling public white-sand beach in the city center. Beyond swimming in the tropical waters, which stay warm year-round, you can also partake in activities like jet skiing, wakeboarding and even surfing, as there’s a consistent exposed beach break, though we do recommend asking your hotel for recommendations to ensure a vendor is reputable. After all the action, refresh at one of the dozens of cafes or juice bars, and don’t forget about the fresh seafood hawkers along the strip facing the beach. 

Lady Buddha Statue

To immerse yourself in Vietnamese culture and spirituality, visit the Linh Ung Pagoda, a modern Buddhist temple opened in 2010 on the Son Tra Peninsula. The main attraction is a towering 17-story statue of a Lady Buddha atop a lotus flower—at 220 feet, it’s the tallest Buddha statue in Vietnam. The surrounding temple complex draws pilgrims wishing to pray to Shakyamuni Buddha and the various bodhisattvas and arhats of the Buddhist canon. Monkeys like the common macaque wander the area freely, but definitely don’t feed them. 

Marble Mountains

Those who enjoy a bit of hiking with their sightseeing should ascend the steps of Marble Mountains, a group of five limestone peaks named after the five Asian elements: water, fire, metal, wood and earth. As you trek up, you’ll encounter various houses of worship, some accessed through tunnels and caves. The most notable (and photo-worthy) among these is the Huyen Khong cave, boasting a large stone statue of seated Buddha as well as a shrine to the god of matchmaking. As long as you are wearing modest clothing and being respectful to the culture, you may also light incense at the various altars to wish for good fortune. 

Ba Na Hills

Take the world’s longest cable car ride up to Ba Na Hills while enjoying views of Da Nang and the ocean beyond. Seated nearly 5,000 feet above sea level, the former French colonial hill station and retreat was turned into a theme park-style resort in 2009. Nowadays, one of the main draws here is the Instagram-beloved Golden Bridge—a 500-foot pedestrian walkway arching out from a cliffside and seemingly held up by two giant hands.

APEC Sculpture Park

Unveiled in 2022, this free-entry sculpture park is an extension of the pre-existing APEC Park, an outdoor arts and pedestrian walking area built in 2017 on the west bank of the Han River to showcase installations representing the 21 economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. The new attractions include a performance stage, fountain installation and sprawling steel arch inspired by the shape of a flying kite. Also within the complex is the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, showcasing art from the ancient Cham empire that once inhabited the region. Part of Da Nang’s bid to become a green city by 2030, the park is lush with trees and walking gardens. 

The easiest and most popular day trip from Da Nang is an approximately one-hour drive to Hoi An. The UNESCO-listed ancient town is one of the most well-preserved examples of a thriving Southeast Asian port city used by the Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, French, Malaysian and more. Once in the old town, stroll through densely-packed alleys of timber-frame buildings, stepping into pagodas and stopping at open-air markets along the way. Or, if you have more time, take a motorbike tour (or rent your own) through the rice paddies on the outskirts of town to catch a glimpse of country life (and water buffalo). Don’t forget to try a bowl of cao lau, a thick udon-like noodle dish that originated in Hoi An.

Nu Do Kitchen

Helmed by MasterChef Vietnam runner-up Carol Pham, this noodle shop specializes in mi Quang, a Central Vietnamese soup typically made with pork belly, sesame rice crackers, eggs and peanuts in a bone broth seasoned with fish sauce. Though the dish originates in neighboring Quang Nam province, Da Nang is the largest nearby city, and the dish has become a point of pride across the region. At Nu Do, Pham, a native of Dien Ban between Hoi An and Da Nang, stays faithful to the profile of the broth, but offers varieties with beef, chicken and fish. 

Mi Quang Phu Chiem Anh

For the old-school version of mi Quang noodle soup, Da Nang’s local delicacy, look no further than Mi Quang Phu Chiem. The restaurant is named after Phu Chiem, a village in Quang Nam from which the dish is thought to have been created. In Vietnam, noodle soup is often eaten for breakfast, as it is light yet hearty. As such, the restaurant opens bright and early at 5:30 am, and closes by 11:30 am. There are dozens of restaurants in Da Nang with a similar name, selling a standout version of this dish, but we particularly love this mainstay. Look for the big cauldron of soup simmering right out front.

Banh Xeo Ba Duong

This local favorite spotlights another Central Vietnamese specialty, banh xeo, or sizzling fried turmeric crepes, filled with meat, shrimp or a combination of both. Inside, see local cooks manning a half-dozen frying pans to turn out the crepes one at a time (each frying pan can only fit one). Also on offer is nem lui, a type of ground pork sausage skewered and grilled on lemongrass stalks.

Before you start making any travel plans, you will want to make sure to take care of all of the passport, VISA, and immunization requirements for your trip.   In addition, you will want to make sure you have a clear understanding of what languages they speak in Vietnam so that you can plan any translation needs you might have.

You will also need to know what currency they use so that you can exchange currency before your trip if necessary. I have included some of this key information in my Da Nang, Vietnam guide below for you to review as you start to make your travel plans.

Top Things to See and Do in Da Nang

Da Nang is a beautiful city with a wealth of cultural, entertainment, and culinary attractions for you to enjoy. So, you certainly won’t have trouble filling out the itinerary for your trip. For those visiting, I recommend spending at least a few days in the city to explore it properly. Ideally, one day for the Marble Mountains and the city’s other sights, a day for exploring Ba Na Hills, and a third day to see Hoi An and spend time at the beach.

Visit Ba Na Hills

If you have never visited Sun World at Ba Na Hills , imagine Disney World placed on the side of a jungle-clad mountain. I didn’t know quite what to expect when I first visited, but was blown away by the beautiful gardens, incredible entertainment venues, and stunning location of the park. I am guessing that many of you recognize the park’s Golden Bridge, which has been nicknamed the “Hands of God Bridge”. However, it is just one of many incredible sights to see in this amazing place.

If you plan on visiting Sun World during your stay in Da Nang, I would suggest dedicating a full day to exploring the park. Like Disney World, it is a big park with a lot of amazing things to see and do. I also suggest getting to the park early in the morning so that you can get some pictures of the Golden Bridge while it isn’t packed with people.

Check out the Dragon Bridge

The incredible Golden Bridge in Ba Na Hills isn’t the only amazing bridge in the city of Da Nang. In fact, there is a bridge located in the heart of the city that is every bit as impressive. The infamous Dragon Bridge is one of the most unique and beautiful bridges that you will find anywhere in the world.

A giant golden dragon runs the length of the bridge, which spans across the mighty Hàn River. What really makes this bridge impressive is that it breathes real fire and water. Check out the video I posted below to see this impressive bridge in action.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you want to see the dragon breathe fire and water, make sure you plan to be in Da Nang over the weekend. The dragon only breathes fire and water on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Stop at the Love Lock Bridge

There are several bridges like this throughout the world and it is always a fun way to responsibly leave your mark on a city. Visitors to the Love Lock Bridge in central Da Nang are encouraged to purchase a padlock and attach it to the railing of this beautiful little bridge. It’s a way for couples to symbolize their binding love for each other. The beautiful heart decorations really add to the special ambiance of this wonderful bridge.

Visit the Marble Mountains

One of the most popular attractions in Da Nang is the incredible Marble Mountains . Located roughly 20 minutes South of Da Nang towards Hoi An, the Marble Mountains consist of five distinct coastal mountains. Each of these mountains is named after a different element. They are Kim Son (metal), Thuy Son (water), Moc Son (wood), Tho Son (earth), and Hoa Son (fire).

Each of these mountains has a plethora of interesting caves and tunnels that you can hike through. Many of these caves have beautiful Buddhist temples built into them. The most popular of the Marble Mountains is Thuy Son. While the hike to the top involves 150 steep steps, there is also an elevator that you can pay to take to the top.

At the top of Thuy Son is the renowned “Road to Heaven”. This hike takes you through several caves before reaching a viewpoint that lets you see out over the city and the other Marble Mountain peaks. If you plan to visit, make sure you get there early to beat the crowds. You will also want to wear shoes with good traction as the marble rock inside the caves can be quite slippery.

Visit the Sơn Trà Mountain

Also known locally as “Monkey Mountain”, the Son Tra Mountain is a breathtaking national park that is located on the nearby Son Tra Peninsula. The mountain is popular because it is a great spot to get stunning views of the city of Da Nang. And if you’re lucky, you may also spot the rare red-faced monkey species that call the mountain park their home.

In addition to the great views and fun wildlife encounters, the Son Tra Mountain is also home to the tallest statue of the Goddess of Mercy and the stunning Linh Ung Pagoda. These two monuments alone are worth the trip to the top of Monkey Mountain. The great views and the monkeys are just icing on the cake.

Take a Day Trip to Historic Hội An

No visit to Da Nang is complete without taking a day trip to the nearby historical town of Hội An . Located just 45 minutes south of Da Nang, it will feel like you are going centuries back in time when you visit. It is a quaint, beautiful town that is pedestrian-friendly and full of colorful, historical buildings.

However, what really gives the town its wonderful ambiance is the colorful lanterns that are hung from every tree. When you visit, you can tour the old town or take a short boat ride down the river to soak in the experience. If you want to maximize your experience in Hoi An, plan to visit during the night market . The beautiful lanterns lighting up the town and the aroma of delicious food will make you never want to leave.

Visit the Han Market

When visiting Da Nang, it is essential to spend some time at one of the city’s incredible markets. In my opinion, one of the best is the amazing Han Market. In addition to great food in the area, you will also find everything from designer knockoffs to neat souvenirs to bring back home. Some of the neat things I saw during my visit were colorful oil lanterns (like you see in Hoi An), straw bags and purses, lots of silk shirts and dresses, and beautiful wood carvings.

Spend Some Time at My Khe Beach

The gorgeous My Khe Beach is a breathtaking stretch of coastline that reaches from the base of the Son Tra Peninsula all the way to the Marble Mountains. Its soft, white sand and calm waters make it a perfect beach for swimming and relaxing. The beach has plenty of lounge chairs available to rent and is just a few miles from the center of the city. This makes it the perfect spot to unwind after spending the day sightseeing around the city.

See the Nearby Mỹ Sơn Ruins

For travelers who like history, the nearby Mỹ Sơn Ruins are a site that you won’t want to miss. Located roughly an hour’s drive from Da Nang, Mỹ Sơn was the important religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries. The Champa Kingdom practiced Indian Hinduism and the ruins at Mỹ Sơn are some of the best preserved from this period.

While they may not be as impressive as Angkor Wat, they are impressive to see in person and give you a glimpse into the history of the area. Not only that, but the setting for the ruins couldn’t be more beautiful. If you are interested in visiting, there are plenty of day tours that will take you there. See the Linh Ung Pagoda

Legend has it that, during the reign of King Minh Mang (of the Nguyen Dynasty), a statue of Buddha suddenly drifted out of nowhere and landed on the sand beaches of the Son Tra Peninsula. Believing it to be a good omen, the coastal fishermen built a shrine on the peninsula.

Today, the beautiful Linh Ung Pagoda is an important religious shrine and a popular tourist spot near the city of Da Nang. In addition to the beautiful pagoda, the stunning gardens are worth exploring. However, the highlight of the pagoda is undoubtedly the giant Lady Buddha. At 220 feet (67 meters) tall, it is the tallest in Vietnam and an incredible sight to behold.

As good as the views of the Lady Buddha are from the ground, there is a 17-floor staircase inside the statue that leads to the top. At each level, you will find 21 beautiful Buddha statues and an altar to pray. Visiting the Linh Ung Pagoda is a must-see spot for anyone traveling to Da Nang as it is one of the city’s most important religious and cultural spots.

How to Get to Da Nang, Vietnam

If you will be visiting Da Nang from outside of Vietnam, you will need to look for flights to Da Nang International Airport (DAD) . This is a large international airport that has direct flights to and from many other popular destinations in Southeast Asia. For an idea of flight time and the availability of direct flights, please refer to the chart I included in my Da Nang, Vietnam guide below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: An important aspect of your travel to Da Nang that you shouldn’t overlook is your tourist VISA. For many Western countries, including the United States, the visa-on-arrival process is not an option.

This means that you need to obtain your VISA before traveling. In fact, you won’t be allowed on your flight to Da Nang without it. So, please be sure to review my Vietnam Entrance Requirements guide that I linked at the top of this guide before booking your flights.

Travel Time from Other Cities in the Region

When you start to plan your trip to Da Nang, one of the most important factors to consider is when to visit. Vietnam, like most other destinations, has weather that is more enjoyable during certain times of the year. Essentially, there are two different seasons in Vietnam. Which of these seasons you choose to visit will have a big impact on what you can see and do.

In Vietnam, the monsoon season lasts from September until March. However, a vast majority of the rainfall the Da Nang area gets is from September through December. Meanwhile, the dry season in Vietnam typically stretches from April until August. However, the hottest months of the year in Da Nang happen to be during the summer months of June through August.

These are all factors that you will want to consider when you start to plan your trip to Da Nang. To assist you in determining the right time to plan your visit, I cover the type of weather you can expect throughout the year in my Da Nang, Vietnam guide below.

Average Temperature (°F)

Like most of Southeast Asia, the climate in Da Nang, Vietnam is a tropical one. While the temperatures can be very warm year-round, the hottest temperatures in Da Nang are from June through August. This coincides with the middle of the dry season in Vietnam. While the weather is dry, it can be blistering hot during this time of year with temperatures reaching the upper 90s (or 35 degrees Celcius).

Conversely, the months of November through January are typically the coolest in Da Nang. Although the temperatures may be cooler, the months of November and December are also two of the rainiest months of the year in Da Nang. The month of January can be a good month to target if you want to avoid the heat because the monsoon rains aren’t as heavy and the temperatures are still rather cool.

Average Precipitation (Inches)

While the monsoon season in Vietnam runs from September until March, the wettest months of the year in Da Nang are September through December. During these four months, the city of Da Nang usually sees around seventy-five percent of its annual rainfall. So, unless you plan on spending a lot of time indoors or getting drenched in the rain, you might want to avoid visiting during these months.

The dry season in Vietnam typically runs from April until August. During these months, there is a lot of sunshine and a lot less rain in Da Nang. For travelers who want to maximize their time at the beach or out exploring the Marble Mountains, the early dry season is a great time to visit. The weather is nice, but it isn’t yet scorching hot.

The Best Months to Visit Da Nang

In my opinion, the best time to visit Da Nang, Vietnam is between late January and early May. During this time of year, the weather is typically sunny with low humidity levels and cooler temperatures. This makes it the most comfortable time of year to be active outside.

The summer months of June through August are dry, but they are also typically very hot. The summer months are also when Da Nang typically sees the largest crowds, so you will likely have to deal with longer lines and higher accommodation prices if you visit during this time of year.

The worst time to visit Da Nang is during the monsoon season, which typically stretches from September until early January in Da Nang. Unless you don’t have a choice, I would steer clear of visiting during these months as the city can see torrential downpours that make getting around and doing things very difficult.

Where to Stay in Da Nang, Vietnam

One of the most important decisions you will need to make when planning your trip to Da Nang is where you will stay. When you travel, the accommodations you choose are oftentimes amongst the biggest expenditures for your trip.  So, not only do you need to be comfortable where you are staying, but you also need to be comfortable with how much you are paying to stay there.

Where to Eat in Da Nang, Vietnam

When most people plan a trip, the primary focus is on how to get there, where to stay, and what to see and do.  What many travelers neglect to plan, is where to eat when you are there.  Granted, it is sometimes fun to be spontaneous when choosing a restaurant while traveling. It is also smart to get some recommendations when you arrive.

However, it can also be advantageous to have some ideas of restaurants you would like to try before traveling as well.  This way, you won’t miss out on a highly recommended culinary experience that you will regret.  To help you decide on some restaurants in Da Nang to add to your list, I have included a list of some highly recommended options for you to review in my Da Nang, Vietnam guide below.

Recommended Tours in Da Nang, Vietnam

Da Nang promotes its role as leading MICE destination

The central city has emerged as a key player in the growing asia pacific mice sector, as the hub has strongly committed to service excellence with world-class facilities and strategic location..

Đà Nẵng city was highlighted for its growing role in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibitions) industry, attracting significant attention and accolades from international stakeholders at the Meetings Show Asia Pacific 2024 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

MICE groups from a diverse range of international markets such as Australia, India, Thailand, Russia, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and many others have shown interest and chosen Đà Nẵng as their event destination.

This year’s Meetings Show Asia Pacific, under the theme: Asia Pacific’s Role in Recasting the Global MICE Sector , provided the perfect backdrop for the central city to reinforce its position as a top-tier venue for international meetings and conventions.

The city welcomed 25 MICE groups, with 9,510 visitors in the first quarter of 2024. Last year, it received 163 MICE groups, totalling 45,344 visitors.

At the meeting, Ariyana Convention Centre Danang was at the forefront of showcasing Đà Nẵng City as a premier MICE destination.

“We were honoured to represent Đà Nẵng and Việt Nam at this prestigious international gathering,” said Prabhakar Singh, Director of Sales and Marketing at Ariyana Convention Centre Danang.

“The interest we have seen in Đà Nẵng as a MICE destination at the show is a clear indicator of our city’s potential and the effective strategies we have implemented to promote our MICE capabilities on a global stage.”

At the conference, Ariyana Convention Centre Danang, host of the prestigious APEC 2017 and a co-founder of the Asia Venue Alliance (AVA), presented its cutting-edge facilities, tailored event solutions, and commitment to sustainable business practices.

These efforts were designed to meet the complex demands of modern international events. Attendees and potential clients had the opportunity to engage directly with MICE leaders of Việt Nam, gaining insight into the future of event hosting in the Asia Pacific.

Additionally, the centre, on behalf of the destination of Đà Nẵng, participated in various networking events and expert-led panels, ensuring that Việt Nam’s voice is heard in discussions on key industry trends such as sustainability, technology integration and workforce development.

This is particularly important as the MICE industry looks towards recovery and growth post-pandemic, with an increased focus on resilience and adaptability.

The global MICE industry is estimated to register annual growth of 7.2 per cent from 2023 to 2032, to surpass US$1.7 trillion by 2032, according to Precedence Research in a report released in 2023.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the MICE industry is set to expand at an even higher annual growth rate of 7.4 per cent over the same period, accounting for almost half of global market share by 2032.

The Meetings Show Asia Pacific 2024 proved to be a significant milestone for Ariyana Convention Centre Danang to highlight the city’s readiness to host world-class events, driving the growth of tourism and business in the region.

"The Meetings Show Asia Pacific was a fantastic opportunity for us to exchange knowledge with other industry leaders and to bring international standards back to Vietnam," said Prabhakar Singh.

“We are excited about the future prospects and the positive impact our participation will have on attracting more global events to our city. Ariyana Convention Centre Danang invites all interested parties to discover the vibrant city of Đà Nẵng and explore its potential as a top destination for international business gatherings.”

Đà Nẵng has launched one of the largest promotion programmes of the year as the city’s tourism industry offered more than 10,000 vouchers with an estimated value of VNĐ5 billion (US$200,000) for tourists visiting the city.

The hub’s tourism industry has been boosting its promotion of MICE and golf, two key products for tourism attraction.

In 2023, Đà Nẵng Golf Resort became a member of Asian Tour Destinations – the Tour’s exclusive network of world-class golfing venues, and golfers can have more playing options at many golf courses during their golf trip in central Việt Nam, including BRG Đà Nẵng golf clubs, Bà Nà Hills Golf Club, Vinpearl golf Nam Hội An, Hoiana Shore club and Laguna golf Lăng Cô. Guides for ticket exchange on the Vietnam Airlines app

Passengers can follow the steps below to exchange tickets on the Vietnam Airlines app:

Step 1: Passengers access the Vietnam Airlines app. At the home page, passengers swipe up to open the bottom toolbar and select “Manage Booking”.

Step 2: At the "Manage Booking" screen, passengers enter the reservation code (PNR), last name, and email used to purchase the ticket, then select "By PNR".

Step 3: In the “My Bookings” screen, scroll down to the “Ancillary services” section and select “Automatic ticket exchange”.

Step 4: Check the information, select the flight required exchange, and then click “Continue”.

Step 5: In the "Search for New Flight" screen, select the departure location, new destination, travel date, and ticket class as required. Once completed, select "Continue".

Step 6: At the new screen, proceed to pay for the difference (if applicable).

After paying the difference, Vietnam Airlines will send a ticket exchange confirmation and a receipt to the email address registered when purchasing the ticket. If passengers do not receive a confirmation email from Vietnam Airlines within one hour of the successful exchange, please contact the online ticket help desk via telephone number at 19001100 , email [email protected] , or Vietnam Airlines’ sales offices for assistance.
