11. Why Trust Laptop Mag

The best laptop backpacks for travel offer well-organized space for your belongings and convenient features like a water-resistant design, hidden pockets, or a USB charging port. Travel backpacks should also be comfortable to wear for long periods of time, especially if you’re waiting through a security line at the airport or planning to walk around a theme park all day.

In addition to being durable and practical, the best travel backpacks should make a visual statement. You can go bold with a vibrant color or whimsical design, or stick with a classic, timeless color scheme rooted in black or grey — either way, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice style for utility when choosing a backpack for travel.

All of the backpacks listed here are equipped with a dedicated laptop sleeve or compartment, and they’ve all been personally tested by Laptop Mag. Whether you need a simple backpack to fit one or two changes of clothes and a few other essential items, or you want a bag that you can take on a plane in lieu of a suitcase, we’ve got you covered.

1. Volher Laptop Backpack

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This laptop backpack from Volher is the best option for most travellers, combining practical storage with an eye-catching, vibrant design. Inside the bag’s main compartment, there’s a padded sleeve for any 15.6-inch laptop and open storage for clothes, snacks, or other travel essentials. You can store drinks in the padded mesh side pockets, and hide your valuables in the anti-theft back pocket.

Volher’s backpack sports a water-resistant polyester fabric, so if you’re caught in the rain, water droplets just roll right off and all your belongings stay dry. Its durable fabric makes this backpack an excellent choice for hiking trips or other outdoor excursions, especially if you choose one of the bright, high-visibility color options. With padded mesh on the back and the shoulder straps, it’s comfortable to wear for long hours.

This travel bag also has a special feature: a built-in USB charging port. The port itself is on the bag’s left side, and there’s a cable inside you can connect to a power bank. Then, while you’re hiking or walking around Disney World, you can easily charge your phone without needing to take the backpack off or hold onto a power bank.

Best laptop backpacks for travel 2024 - eBags Luxon Laptop Backpack

In many ways, the search for the perfect travel laptop backpack is just like searching for a work- or school-dedicated backpack. Most importantly, consider what you’ll need in terms of total space and organizational compartments. Make sure the backpack you choose can accommodate your laptop, travel snacks and drinks, handheld gaming console or books to read for fun, however many changes of clothes you need for your trip, or anything else you’d typically bring along while traveling.

Many backpacks will list whether they can accommodate 15.6-inch or 17-inch laptops, and some brands will list the specific dimensions of the laptop sleeve or compartment within the backpack. In addition to comparing the measurements of your laptop to those advertised by a potential backpack, consider whether you want a dedicated zipper compartment for your laptop or if a padded sleeve inside the main compartment will do.

With laptop backpacks for travel specifically, there are two useful features to look out for: hidden pockets and a USB charging port. Some backpacks come equipped with a zipper compartment positioned on the side or the back of the bag, making it incredibly difficult or impossible for someone to pickpocket what’s inside. These pockets are perfect for your valuables, like your wallet, smartphone, or keys.

Then, some bags include a USB charging port accessible on one side of the backpack and a cable inside that you can attach to a power bank you own. This allows you to comfortably charge your phone without needing to carry the power bank while you walk around a theme park or sit in the backseat during a road trip. With some travel backpacks, you can slip your phone into a side pocket so you don’t need to carry it, but it’s easily accessible when you need it.

If you plan on traveling via plane, you should see if the backpack complies with TSA guidelines. Then, check with your airline to get minimum dimensions for overhead and under-seat luggage to ensure you won’t need to check your backpack at the last minute and pay a premium.

For backpacks going under the seat in front of you on a plane, it’s a smart choice to go with a water-resistant polyester fabric that’s easy to clean and can withstand accidental spills. Durable, water-resistant fabric is also a smart choice if the place you’re traveling to gets a lot of rain or if you’re exploring outdoors at the beach or on a mountain.

The Best Laptop Tote Bags

Kaitlyn Wells

By Kaitlyn Wells

No professional wardrobe is complete without a great-looking bag to carry all of your gear. For people who have to lug around a computer, laptop bags are a more polished, grown-up option than a backpack, and they offer more storage space than a briefcase.

After years of testing, we’ve landed on six favorites: a water-repellant polyester tote with clever pockets ; a well-padded tote that can also be used as a cross-body messenger bag ; a refined leather tote with a zippered laptop compartment ; a splurge-worthy leather bag, with internal organization, that you’ll have forever ; a minimalist vegan tote that’s extra-roomy ; and a budget faux leather bag with a dedicated laptop compartment .

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, and keys.

The research

For laptops up to 13 inches, for 15-inch laptops (and larger), how we picked and tested, the competition, a durable, water-repellent polyester tote: bellroy tokyo tote second edition.

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, and keys.

Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition

A sturdy and smart commuter.

This tough yet polished laptop tote bag is thoughtfully designed, with features like internal popout bottle pockets and leakproof zippers. But its durable fabric shell is abrasive and may make some sweaters and blouses pill.

Buying Options

Who should get this: Anyone who prefers something more casual than a briefcase but still wants to look pulled together.

Maximum laptop size: 13 inches

Why it’s great: The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition is a good-looking, well-made piece that transitions perfectly from the coffee shop to the conference room. It strikes a happy medium for professionals who appreciate a polished look and want some protection for their devices but don’t want to flout a semi-casual dress code.

The Bellroy tote we tested is made of a fine-weave polyester (created from recycled water bottles) that’s durable and water-resistant. This bag is ideal for people who need something that will survive scuffs, drops, stains, and routine overpacking. Commuters caught in the rain will also be comforted to know that the laptop tote’s shell repelled water well when we held it under a running faucet. And the exterior zip pocket offers an airtight seal to keep water from destroying valuables.

View of the inside of the Bellroy Tokyo Tote, containing a laptop in one of the pockets, a scarf, and several books.

When we tested a previous generation of the Tokyo Tote, our panelists’ favorite features were, of all things, the interior pop-out, magnetic pockets (for holding a water bottle upright inside the bag). The Second Edition has the same pockets they loved. When the pockets aren’t in use, you can just push them inward, and they spring back into the tote’s frame. These internal pockets are located on both sides of the bag, and they’re also big enough to fit a pair of flip-flops or dirty gym clothes you want to keep separate from the rest of your stuff.

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition also has a large exterior zip pocket, plus two interior pockets (one with a key clip) that are large enough to hold a Field Notes book , a smartphone, sunglasses , or a wrapped USB cord. And the padded laptop section provides ample protection and snugly holds laptops with screens up to 13 inches. The carry handles have a 12-inch drop, so they’re longer and more comfortable to use than the handles on any other bag we recommend. Those handles are padded for added comfort, and they’re coated with no-skid rubber, to prevent the bag from sliding off your shoulder while you’re commuting.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Bellroy Tokyo Tote ’s durable shell is similar to that of the now-discontinued sibling tote we previously tested. This shell can be abrasive against delicate work clothing, and in previous testing, the tote’s exterior pilled knitted sweaters and snagged blouses made of polyester blends. The new handles have softer edges that didn’t snag our shirts as much during testing. The straps also feature no-slip patches, which further reduce pilling at the shoulders (but not near the bust, where most pilling occurs during carry).

This laptop tote’s weave also attracts pet hair like a magnet. If you’ve got a furry friend at home, we don’t recommend the black version, which spotlights pet hair of every shade.

Dimensions: 14 by 18.5 by 5 inches Handle drop: 12 inches Weight: 1.4 pounds Warranty: three-year warranty Colors: black, navy, cream, green, bronze

A tote and messenger bag in one: Lo & Sons The O.G. 2

Lo & Sons The O.G. 2, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, a notebook, and keys.

Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 (medium)

Utility player.

This nylon tote doubles as a messenger bag, works well for frequent flyers, and offers lots of organization and padded laptop protection. But its added functionality makes it the heaviest of our picks.

Who should get this: Commuters who like the look of a tote bag but prefer the functionality of a cross-body messenger.

Why it’s great: We love the nylon Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 (medium) for its versatility. It has a conveniently long crossbody strap and a variety of storage compartments, and it offers ample laptop protection. It’s the just-right blend of a tote and a messenger bag.

This bag grabbed our attention with touches like gleamy accent hardware, contrasting interior lining, plentiful pockets, and studded feet. The O.G. 2 features a three-color design consisting of a neutral exterior, which you can spice up with several fun interior colors. It also comes in medium and large sizes.

This laptop tote boasts a ton of organization: four large zip compartments, four slip pockets, two pen pockets, a laptop or document holder, a hidden shoe compartment, and a long key leash. Thanks to the bag’s concealed zipper design, half of its storage features are in an external compartment that’s hidden out of sight. We like to think that means subway thieves will overlook you when they’re hunting for an easy mark.

The O.G. 2 provides more laptop protection than any other tote we recommend. The laptop compartment, the exterior, and even the individual pockets are padded to shield electronics from cracks and dings.

View of the inside of the Lo & Sons O.G. 2, containing headphones, a scarf, a book, and a notebook.

This bag does a good job of keeping liquids at bay. It has tight seams, so spilled drinks won’t penetrate the base, unlike with its sibling, the Lo & Sons Seville Tote, in the Competition section .

The O.G. 2 model is the only laptop tote bag designed for travel that we recommend. Both the medium and large sizes should fit under most airplane seats. And the backside features a zippered trolley sleeve, so travelers can secure the bag over luggage handles.

And this tote is also one of two bags we recommend with a crossbody strap—our EaseGave Laptop Bag pick is the other. Each has a wide, thick strap, like a seatbelt, but we prefer The O.G. 2’s design, which consists of thicker hardware and a longer strap. The thicker slide adjuster ensures that the strap won’t suddenly become slack on your trek to work. Also, the longer strap—up to 7 inches longer than that of the competition—lets you adjust it to accommodate a wider variety of body sizes and heights. And we like that this bag allows you to carry it with the shorter handles, which are easier to grab and go.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The slimish profile of the The O.G. 2 isn’t ideal for commuters who carry a ton of gear. The bag is cushiony, and the sides taper at the top, so the space is narrow. That also makes it harder to rummage in the bag and find what you need while you’re on the move.

At 2.6 pounds, this bag in medium is one of the heaviest we tested. Only the Dagne Dover Signature Tote (Classic), the Lo & Sons Seville Tote, and the Mosiso Laptop Tote Bag (all in the Competition section) were heavier, weighing from 2.7 to 3 pounds each. (Note: The large-size Lo & Sons O.G. 2 bag weighs slightly more, at 3 pounds.)

Some 14- and 15-inch laptops can fit inside the bag’s main compartment but don’t fit inside the padded laptop compartment.

Dimensions: 13.75 by 16.6 by 6.75 inches (medium); 14.25 by 16.5 by 6.75 inches (large) Handle drop: 9.5 inches (medium); 10 inches (large) Weight: 2.6 pounds (medium); 3 pounds (large) Warranty: one-year warranty Colors: black/gold/gray, black/gold/lavender, black/gold/camel, black/silver/lavender, black/silver/gray, black/gunmetal/gray, deep navy/gold/camel, gray/silver/azure

A sophisticated leather tote: Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote

The Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in pale leather with an orange tag.

Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag

A refined open-top tote.

If you’re ready to invest in a high-quality bag, this pebbled leather tote offers style and sophistication. Though there is a dedicated laptop compartment that zippers closed, the rest of the bag stays open at the top.

Who should get this: People with a higher budget who want an upscale leather tote with a refined silhouette.

Why it’s great: The Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag is spendy, but for the price it delivers sophisticated styling, supple pebbled leather, and structured design. The stitching on ours was perfect and didn’t fray, the leather felt luxuriously smooth, and the upright design never slouched or tipped.

Since we first made the Perry a pick, it has been slightly redesigned; we have not tested the new model, but the minor changes appear to have made the updated bag even more functional than its predecessor. It is now an inch bigger and includes three small internal slip pockets.

The Perry has a dedicated laptop slot in its center, dividing the bag into two parts. We like that the division offers some organizational structure, which is hard to find in a high-end leather tote.

The laptop compartment zips shut and is large enough to hold a 13-inch model and maybe a thin document or two. The Perry’s compartment is also raised off the bottom of the bag, so if you mistakenly plop your bag on the ground, you won’t dent your laptop in the process.

The Perry is a dream to carry. The original version weighed 1.8 pounds, half as much as many other contenders we dismissed ; the new version is nearly the same weight, according to the manufacturer specs. But what really surprised us was that the Perry, despite its somewhat thin straps, was still comfortable enough to carry, packed with gear, for a full day of commuting.

A laptop tucked into the zippered inner pocket of the Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag.

Some of the priciest laptop tote bags we tried—including the over-$500 Lo & Sons Seville Tote , in the Competition section—aren’t leakproof. So we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the Tory Burch Perry tote is. In our tests, the burnished seams were reliably strong, neither buckling under a heavy load nor allowing spilled beverages in.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like most open-top bags we tested, the Perry doesn’t offer much protection from the elements. Only the laptop compartment has a zipper, so the bag doesn’t shield the rest of your stuff very well.

Also, the laptop compartment isn’t padded. But because it’s elevated off the bottom of the bag and isn’t exposed on either side, we’re not overly worried about a computer or tablet getting banged up while inside.

Dimensions: 14 by 5 by 11.6 inches Handle drop: 10 inches Weight: 1.8 pounds (previous version; current version is the same, according to manufacturer’s specs) Warranty: 30-day return policy Colors: black, clam shell, ivory, light umber, mint green, brick, feather gray, bay gray, natural

A classic leather tote to last a lifetime: Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote

The Carl Friedrik Ashby, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, a notebook, and keys.

Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote

An elegant forever bag.

Handmade in Italy, this leather tote looks and feels extra special, has plenty of room for your belongings, and zips securely across the top. It’s the priciest of our picks, but it is covered by a lifetime warranty.

Who should get this: Those in search of a timeless leather bag that’s only going to get better with age—and those willing to pay a premium for it.

Why it’s great: The Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote is a bag that commands attention. This gorgeous leather tote is handmade in Italy, and though it’s the most expensive option we tested, it’s well worth the price. For about $650, you get a bag with unquestionable quality, beautiful lines, and a lifetime warranty.

Carl Friedrik is a brand known for elegance, and it delivers with the Ashby tote. With its clean lines and pristine details, this tote radiates classic good taste. The longer you own the Ashby, the better it will look: It’s made of vegetable-tanned, full-grain Vachetta leather, which will develop a patina over time and get even richer with use. The surface is finished, which gives it a slight sheen and protects against water stains and scuffs.

Heavy-duty zippers with polished teeth glide smoothly, and the stitching is near-perfect and incredibly sturdy. The Ashby reliably stays upright with no slouch—we pushed the bag from side to side, and it rocked but never fell over.

The Ashby is large but manageable, and it will work for many occasions. The straps fit comfortably over the shoulder. There’s a spacious main compartment that will easily hold commuting essentials, including a 13-inch laptop in a dedicated pocket. Note that this bag will easily accommodate a 15-inch laptop in the main compartment. There is also a large zip pocket and three slip pockets for storing smaller gear, like a wallet, pens, and charging cords.

View of the empty inside of the Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote, one of our favorite laptop totes.

Lastly, over the course of our testing, this is one of only four companies we’ve found offering a true lifetime warranty (the others are Duluth Trading Co. , Peak Design, and Timbuk2; Herschel, Targus , and others offer limited lifetime warranties that protect only against manufacturer defects not caused by long-term wear and tear). For a bag that costs as much as a car payment, we’ll take all the protection we can get.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: This is an expensive bag, though its cost is tempered by its excellent quality and lifetime warranty, which covers both wear and tear and manufacturer defects.

The Ashby’s straps are among the thinnest we’ve seen—on a par with those on our Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote pick. We found the Ashby’s straps comfortable to use, even when the bag was full. But this is something to be aware of if you haul extra-heavy loads.

This bag’s base lacks studded feet (found on both our EaseGave Laptop Bag and Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 picks), which protect the base from wear and tear.

Dimensions: 18 by 11.5 by 5 inches Handle drop: 9 inches Weight: 2.5 pounds Warranty: lifetime warranty Colors: cognac, black

A sleek, minimalist vegan tote: Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag

The Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in pink with a pen, glasses, a notebook, and keys.

Matt & Nat Abbi Vegan Tote Bag

An understated vegan leather bag.

Longer-than-average straps make this simple tote—roomy enough for larger laptops—easy to carry. But it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop compartment, so electronics could float around unprotected.

Who should get this: Those who care less about bells and whistles and just want a sleek bag that’s big enough to fit a laptop plus their daily gear.

Maximum laptop size: 15 inches

Why it’s great: The Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag is a spacious, no-frills work tote with a practical zippered top closure and long carry handles. It’s made of soft, vegan leather (produced from recycled windshield glass resin) that’s thick enough to keep your bag’s contents from bulging uncomfortably.

The body of the bag is softly structured, and the base is wide and thick, ensuring that the bag remains upright when full and doesn’t spill. The zipper’s metallic accent color and long, tapered pull tab add to the tote’s sleek, understated look. The lining is made of 100% recycled plastic nylon, so it’s especially easy to spot-clean.

The Abbi tote’s interior has one open pocket that’s big enough to hold a smartphone or a slim wallet, plus one wallet-sized pocket with a zipper that echoes the exterior’s metallic finishes. But there is no dedicated laptop compartment.

We especially appreciate the Abbi’s long handles, which make tucking the bag under the arm easier (especially for those who have a larger chest). The handles have a 10-inch strap drop, 2 inches longer than those of many totes we researched, including some bags listed in our Competition section, from Cuyana, Dagne Dover, and Lo & Sons . Two inches may not seem like much, but when you’re hauling your laptop, commuting gear, and a few dinner ingredients, you’ll likely be thankful for the extra length.

Finally, we’d trust the Abbi to keep our belongings safe and dry if we were forced to rest it on the floor of a subway car. There’s a feeling of dread many commuters experience whenever they lift their bag off the ground, fearing they’ll discover that it’s dripping wet and their stuff is ruined. During our tests, the Abbi’s clean, tight seams didn’t let spills seep through this bag. And the vegan leather is easy to spot-clean.

View of the inside of the Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag, with a laptop tucked inside.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Abbi’s minimalist design lacks a padded compartment for a laptop. For shock absorption, we recommend using a padded sleeve for your laptop in this bag.

The Abbi’s zipper doesn’t create an airtight seal—not unusual among zippered totes—so water may trickle in from above during a heavy rainstorm. When you’re traveling sans umbrella, carrying the bag under your arm should keep out most rainwater.

Vegan leathers can flake and peel after extended use (though Wirecutter’s Sasha VanHoven has had a Matt & Nat backpack made of a similar material for more than a year and hasn’t seen any peeling).

Matt & Nat’s one-year limited warranty policy doesn’t cover normal wear and tear. To extend the life of the bag, we recommend cleaning stains with warm water and dish soap, and coating it in faux-leather polish as needed.

Dimensions: 13.5 by 5.75 by 12 inches Handle drop: 10 inches Weight: 1 pound Warranty: one-year limited warranty Colors: black, daffodil, lime green, lychee, yellow

A sturdy budget tote: EaseGave Laptop Bag

The EaseGave Laptop Bag, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in lavender with a pen, glasses, a notebook, and keys.

EaseGave Laptop Bag

An inexpensive faux leather bag.

This bag is well priced and extremely durable, and it has plenty of useful features—including a detachable messenger strap and metal feet. But it’s heavy and stiff, and few will mistake the exterior for real leather.

Who should get this: Commuters seeking a durable, functional tote on a budget.

Maximum laptop size: 15 inches (for the 15.6-inch bag), 17 inches (for the 17.3-inch bag)

Why it’s great: The EaseGave Laptop Bag is the cheapest bag we recommend, but it doesn’t skimp on features. Made of top-grain polyurethane leather (PU leather for short), this laptop tote bag was thicker and more durable than other faux leather bags we tested, such as the flimsy Dreubea Women’s Soft Faux Leather Tote (featured in the Competition section). It mirrors the structured, rolled carry handles and the mixed compartments of the Dagne Dover Signature Tote (also in the Competition section), which costs nearly four times as much. The EaseGave’s carry handles and messenger strap are both adjustable, to give you the best fit, which is especially impressive for a bag at this price.

Our panelists were impressed by the EaseGave’s functionality. “I really think this is a great affordable bag,” said Wirecutter product manager Samina Begum. “It had an outside pocket for all the things that I needed to keep close at hand, and the fake leather did not scratch no matter how roughly I treated the material.”

Testers also appreciated this bag’s metal feet, which lift the bag slightly off the ground, keeping  spills and grimy subway platforms at a distance. Studded feet aside, the EaseGave didn’t soak up liquids during our spill tests.

Close view of the handles and crossbody strap on the EaseGave Laptop Bag.

The EaseGave comes in two sizes (15.6 inches and 17.3 inches), with a dedicated, padded compartment that can fit a tablet or laptop (up to 15 and 17 inches, respectively). The compartment fastens shut with a Velcro strap, and although it isn’t the most secure option, it’s enough to prevent a laptop from sliding out.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although testers liked the EaseGave’s structured, rectangular shape, they occasionally found it cumbersome to carry on a crowded bus or subway; it’s so stiff and rigid that it doesn’t compress down when tucked under an arm.

The EaseGave’s interior is rough and feels like cheap polyester, which isn’t surprising at this price. The padding of the laptop compartment is on only one side. The other side is a wall-to-wall zippered pocket, but the material is flimsy, and our commuters worried about its long-term durability. “I was super anxious that my keys in my zip pocket would rip through the thin fabric and scratch my computer,” said one tester.

The EaseGave is pretty heavy, even when empty: The 15.6-inch model is 2.3 pounds, and the 17.3-inch model is 2.6 pounds, which is almost double the weight of most laptop totes we recommend.

Dimensions: 15.35 by 4.53 by 12.2 inches; 17.1 by 4.53 by 13.1 inches Handle drop: 6 inches Crossbody strap: 27 to 47 inches Weight: 2.3 pounds (15-inch laptop model); 2.6 pounds (17-inch laptop model) Warranty: 30-day return policy Colors: purple

To determine what makes a great laptop tote, we researched style blogs, bag forums, and online reviews, and we consulted our coworkers. We then compiled a list of dozens of well-reviewed laptop tote bags in a variety of styles, recording key information like price, size, materials, availability, and third-party reviews.

We also listed each bag’s notable features, such as zippered compartments, a dedicated laptop pocket, a crossbody strap, color options, and warranty coverage.

A laptop bag dripping with water suspended over a shallow clear container of water.

Once we had narrowed the pool and selected bags for in-person testing, we assessed each tote for its overall quality, the durability of the laptop compartments (when applicable), carrying comfort, weight, and water resistance.

We also had Wirecutter staffers commute with the semifinalists and then share their feedback.

Open-top tote bags

Our panelists liked the bucket shape of the Cuyana Classic Structured Leather Tote . It has leather ties that can be used to help keep its open top closed, but our panelists balked at having to partially tie a bag closed using thick pieces of leather, which easily came undone.

The Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote Bag is lightweight and packs nicely into itself for storage, but our panelists preferred bags with a dedicated laptop compartment or some exterior padding.

Budget laptop bags

The Dreubea Women’s Soft Faux Leather Tote was really thin and showed wear and tear easily, so our panelists weren’t comfortable carrying a delicate laptop in it.

Our testers liked the gunmetal hardware accents on the Mosiso Laptop Tote Bag , but they found the zippers to be sticky and a pain to use.

The Overbrooke Classic Canvas Laptop Tote Bag was the roughest bag we tested. The cheap canvas scraped against our panelists’ skin and attracted dirt and debris with little effort. The bag also absorbed water during our spill tests.

Convertible laptop bags

The Targus 15″ Newport Convertible 2-in-1 Tote/Backpack has a clean design—though it reads more as a backpack than a tote—and a padded laptop compartment, but during our tests the bag leaked spilled water. Our panelists also hated its bright-orange interior.

Traditional laptop tote bags

The vegan leather on the Dagne Dover Daily Tote looked unattractive, the zipper was clunky, and the straps were too thin to be comfortable. The Dagne Dover Signature Tote (Classic) , also in vegan leather, was—at 3 pounds—the heaviest bag we tested. The carry handles were rope shaped, rather than flat like on most bags, and frequently fell off the shoulders of our testers. On top of that, our panelists thought the bag’s weight, rigid design, and thick, sharp edges made for a poor combination during commutes on a crowded subway train.

The Duluth Trading Co. Lifetime Leather Tote was heavy, thick, and uncomfortable to carry. The leather is treated with oil; it darkens when wet and takes forever to dry. And the zipper doesn’t offer a tight seal to protect delicate electronics from water damage.

The Lo & Sons Seville Tote is expensive and heavy, and the latch on the laptop compartment is hard to secure. Also, it didn’t keep out liquids during testing.

Travel laptop bags

The roomy Knomo Grosvenor Place Laptop Tote Bag had clean stitching, but it failed our liquid-blocking tests.

Although the Solo New York Jay Leather Tote has a full-grain leather body, we found the quality wasn’t as nice as that of most other leather bags we tested. The zippers were sticky, too, and the bag soaked up water during our liquid tests.

The Targus 15″ Newport East-West Tote is well made and offers ample laptop protection. But the carry straps were uncomfortable for us, and our panelists hated the bag’s traffic-cone orange interior color.

As I mentioned earlier, this article is going to focus on laptop backpacks that are specifically good for traveling with. I have reviewed our favorite backpacks below, categorized by different types of travels to accommodate your travel needs.

#1. Nomatic Travel Bag 40L

Best overall travel laptop backpack.

  • One of the best-crafted bags on the market
  • 40L = lots of room
  • Sleek and stylish
  • Water resistant
  • Tons of pockets and features
  • Mixed reviews on straps/comfort

#2. Tortuga Laptop Backpack

Runner up – best travel laptop backpack.

computer bags for travel

  • Capacity: 24L
  • Dimensions: 48.5 x 27.5 x 18 cm (19.1 x 10.8 x 7.1 in)
  • Weight: 2.1 lb (0.95 kg)
  • Main Material: Shell 200
  • Size of Laptop Compartment: 16″

The Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack is the smaller version of their original Setout pack. This bag is a 24-liter masterpiece for anyone looking for a smaller laptop bag that feels and looks great. We might have rated it second best travel computer backpack but for many this will come out on top. The Setout Laptop Backpack has plenty of organisational features including mesh pockets and a super-secure area for your laptop. The Setout Laptop is marketed as a laptop bag for those who do lots of air travel and we find it to be a great bag to take onto planes as its easy to find our stuff, and it fits snuggly under seats (even on Ryanair).

Personally I love how compact this bag is – 24L is normally a little small for me but I make an exception for this. While I personally miss having a water bottle pocket on the side, the grab handle is a nice touch for those occasions when my back and neck needs a rest. The zips also open really smoothly. Its size made it feel great to wear day in day out and the quality of the materials felt like it would cope well with daily abuse!

Read our complete Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack Review here.

  • Sexy, minimalist design
  • Tons of features
  • Might be too small for some

#3. Harber London Slim Laptop Pack

Leather laptop backpack.

Harber London Slim Backpack

  • Capacity: 18l
  • Dimensions: 43 x 29 x 9 cm (16.9 x 11.4 x 3.5 in)
  • Weight: 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs)
  • Main Material: Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and waterproof cotton canvas

The Harber London Slim Laptop backpack is stylish and functional. It is quite literally a laptop backpack and won’t fit too much more in (although they do make bigger packs so take a look at their site) and just perfect for minimalists who want something a little bit special. The pack is crafted from Premium Full Grain Leather which feels really classy, soft and supple to touch. The interior is nicely padded, there are loads of pockets for you cables as well as a handle if you want to carry it.

This pack is very different to the other pack on our list and isn’t really comparable to say the more versatile Tortuga. It is however perhaps the most classy and stylish and I felt pretty hip when testing out in my home city; it certainly has more sex appeal than the functional North Face. When they sent me this to try I was impressed. It is a niche product but that for the right person this would be the absolute perfect choice. What I really like is how minimalist it is – no unnecessary bulk and will look good if you’ve got a meeting to attend but want something more practical than a briefcase.

  • Durable and comfortable
  • High Quality Material
  • Not cheap…

4#. Osprey Metron

Best commuter laptop bag.

Osprey Metron

  • Dimensions: 19.29H X 12.99W X 11.02D IN
  • Weight: 2.739 LBS
  • Main Material: 500D recycled high tenacity nylon

At 24l, the Osprey Metron is a well sized daypack which will accommodate your laptop, and lunch quite nicely. There is of course a padded laptop pouch along with enough pockets and pouches for keys, cards and pens. The compression straps are also a nice touch and we appreciated the way we could fasten the backpack down so it deint you won’t stick out like a tortoise and barge into people (as much) when you crowd onto the morning train.

TI personally used this backpack for day to use for a good while before I replaced it with an Osprey Quasar – the latter I found could also be used to double up as a hiking backpack. Though we’ve included it here as the best bag for commuters, our team really loved how versatile this bag felt. Osprey is known for their outdoor bags and our team felt this one was suited to just about anything you could throw at it, from hiking to biking into the office. All in, the quality of the materials, the solid build and integrated rain cover make this daypack tough enough for any adventure!

  • Osprey offer a robust guarantee
  • There aren’t any cons

5#. Gulu Made Inspire Backpack

Most ethical laptop backpack.

Gulu Motivator Pack

  • Capacity: 25 liters
  • Dimensions: 19 x 12 x 9 in
  • Weight: 2.0 lbs
  • Main Material: 500D nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15.6 inches

The Gulu Made brand set up shop building a backpacking factory in Uganda and has entrusted the local community with making sustainable backpacks built to last. These bags are designed and built by local tribes. The women of Gulu took modern comfort features into account, adding on water bottle holders and ten different organization pockets with an extra computer sleeve.

Not only is this pack amongst the most stylish I have tried, it is also genuinely well made and the organisational potential is great – the Inspire is the most spacious Gulu-made pack on the market and offers everything you need to commute in a sustainable style. If you are after an ethical product , this is a good on and if you love ethical travel gear, we have a cracking vegan backpack round-up on the site.

  • Ethical brand
  • Pretty inner lining
  • Good organisational potential
  • Not waterproof

#6. Incase Compass Backpack

Best backpack for 17-inch laptops.

computer bags for travel

  • Capacity: 27 liters
  • Dimensions: 18 x 11.75 x 5.25 in
  • Weight: 1.39 lbs
  • Main Material: Light-weight Flight Nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 16 inches

Incase is known for making stylish business and laptop backpacks. Expandable, easy to travel with, and well-padded, the Incase Compass is also our choice for the best 17-inch laptop backpack! The bag itself is made out of 300D polyester, and the black option has a triple-coated weather-resistant front panel. The shoulder straps are made with breathable mesh, and the back panels are padded too. The main compartment has plenty of storage space, and it expands by 35% to fit all of the clothes you may need. You can also maintain a slimmer profile if you are just using it for layovers and day trips.

While I personally don’t like the look of this one, we found it to be one of the best laptop bags for travel because of the way the laptop sleeve is set up. This backpack is smaller than others on this list, but the Incase Compass makes use of its space and we hardly felt the limitations. All in, what we loved most about this bag was how the laptop had its own dedicated pocket away from everything else.

  • Great for on-the-go travel
  • Fits up to a 16-inch laptop
  • Padded back panels
  • Zippable laptop compartment makes security checks a breeze
  • Might be too small for long term travelers

#7. Gregory Rune

Best commuter laptop backpack.

Gregory Rhune Backpack

  • Capacity: 28 liters
  • Dimensions: 19″ x 11″ x 9″
  • Weight: 2.74 lbs
  • Main Material: 210D nylon and 420D high-density nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15 inches

The Gregory Rhune brings a durable and sustainable approach to the everyday backpack concept. All fabrics used in this pack are made from recycled materials resulting in a 51% in the production cycles carbon footprint.  However, eco-credentials aside, this is a genuinely bloody good pack with an excellent  attention to details. Designed for an active user the Rhune packs have an integrated shoulder harness pocket that is perfect for ear buds, transit passes, or mints.

The pack is accessed by a top-lid opening that pulls back – that’s not an opening style that I am too used to but it’s fine and actually makes packing and unpacking very easy. Inside the pack, the main compartment is split into 3 handy compartments including a very generous laptop compartment. To the touch, the material used in construction of the Gregory Rhune feels quite strong and durable and yet, the pack feels very light to carry. Overall, this is a great backpack for commutes and for day travel.

  • Mid-Weight 0.925 kg
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Not great for hiking
  • Small water bottle pocket

#8. Timbuk 2 Lane Commuter

Best small laptop backpack for travel.

computer bags for travel

  • Capacity: 18 liters
  • Dimensions: 10.8″ x 5.91″ x 17.7″
  • Weight: 2.4 lb
  • Main Material: 400D nylon faille

The Timbuk 2 is quite similar to the Incase above. It’s a smaller laptop TSA-friendly backpack that works great for both travel and work, and is one of the best lightweight laptop backpacks. There is a side pocket for your water bottle and a front pocket that is useful for your passport and boarding pass so I would gladly take this onto a flight. The main compartment has plenty of space, and the one in front of it has three smaller compartments for organization.

This backpack is comfortable too – it feels nice against the back and on the shoulders. The drawback about this bag is that it’s not big enough to take on most long backpacking trips; however, if you are just looking for a bag for everyday use, and quick weekend trips, this is a sleek, low-profile backpack that will keep all your stuff organized. Our team loved how balanced the weight felt in this pack when their laptops were stowed.

  • Laptop compartment zips away for easy security checks
  • Dedicated tablet pocket
  • 5-year warranty
  • Great for weekend trips or quick getaways (or super light travelers)

#9. LowePro ProTactic 450

Best laptop backpack for travel photographers.

lowepro photography carry on backpack

  • Capacity: Not specified
  • Dimensions: 13.78″ x 9.06″ x 20.08″
  • Weight: 6.28 lbs
  • Main Material: 900D and 1680D nylon

If you are a serious photographer or have aspirations to be – this bag is next-level.

The LowePro ProTactic 450 is far and away the most functional and stylish backpack for photographers and videographers. The most impressive thing of the ProTactic is how big it is and how well organized the compartments are. Fitting up to two DSLR’s, a 15″ laptop and some drones, this bag is versatile and able to handle all of your tech needs . It’s practically a mobile office! You can go out shooting, pull out your laptop, and begin editing right then and there.

I don’t use a DSLR and so didn’t actually use this as a camera bag. Still, it is one of the best laptop backpacks for many, many reasons. If you want to learn more about the Lowpro, be sure to visit our post on the best camera bags , where we go into more detail.

  • Fits 1 or 2 DSLRs
  • Four camera-access points
  • Ventilation and back support
  • Laptop pocket and additional accessories
  • Only useful for photographers

#10. AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac

Best laptop messenger bag.

aer city messenger bag

  • Capacity: 12 liters
  • Dimensions: 16″ x 11″ x 4.5″
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Main Material: VX-42 X-Pac™ sailcloth exterior by Dimension-Polyant

AER has done it again! They’ve taken the same ergonomic principles that were used for their laptop backpack and applied them to a messenger bag. The result: an amazing laptop messenger bag that is very efficient, effective, and, above all, useful. The AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac is very useful. It comfortably holds a 16-inch MacBook and can even hold a camera kit with a few lenses after some rearranging. The fact that the interior of this bag can be rearranged, much like a camera bag, makes it stand out from the rest as well. At the end of the day, this is more than a messenger bag.

We were quite intrigued about giving this a go as many are used to the traditional backpack setup. To be honest, this is a great bag but after a while I did start to feel the weight of my laptop handing around my neck. Still, I loved how compact and lowkey the bag was whilst also providing a surprising amount of storage and organisation and I was also impressed with how comfortable the padded strap felt on one shoulder.

  • Customizable interior.
  • Sleek, ergonomic design.
  • Top-quality manufacturing.
  • Not as big as the backpack.
  • Like the backpack, straps can be awkward.

#11. Minaal Carry On 2.0 Backpack

Best travel backpack for europe.

best travel backpack for europe

  • Capacity: 9.8 liters
  • Dimensions: 16.5″ x 10.6″ x 4.7″
  • Weight: 1.76 lbs
  • Main Material: 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 13 inches

The Minaal Carry On has updated their original travel backpack to the 2.0, and it’s loaded with new features that improve its functionality, and make it one of the best laptop backpacks for travel! This backpack has the perfect dimensions carry-on any flight (22 x 14 x 9 inches), including those strict European budget airlines, which is one of the reasons why we chose it as one of the best backpacks for travel in Europe. The main compartment zips all the way open like a suitcase which I find some getting used to, but then found to be absolutely great. The larger side is perfect for packing your clothes, shoes, and other items.

All in, we loved this sleek and professional-looking bag, but one of the standout features they told us about what they particularly loved was the zippers. Not only are they super strong and smooth, but they’ve got built-in loops for locking them and keeping your laptop secure. The Minaal Carry-On is made from heavy-duty nylon, so the fabric does a solid job repelling water. The shoulder straps and removable hip straps pack away easily for transit, and the strap system and cushioned back panel foam allow for ultimate comfort.

  • Perfect carry on dimensions
  • Removable hip strap
  • Rain cover that packs into itself
  • Locking zippers
  • Suspended laptop sleeve helps protect laptop if you drop your bag

#12. GoRuck GR1

Most durable travel laptop backpack.

GR1 durable backpack

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Dimensions: 21.5″ x 13.5″ x 7.5″
  • Weight: 3.4 lbs
  • Main Material: Waterproof sailcloth and ballistic

Another one of the best-organized backpacks, 26-litre GoRuck GR1 was designed and built for war zones and cities alike by a former Army Green Beret to be extremely durable and adaptable. For one, this is the most durable backpack on this list, designed for any weather and climate. The YKK zippers perform in sandstorms, and the 1000 Cordura material is rainproof.

This bag is also extremely comfortable. The shoulder straps are padded to handle heavy loads (like 400 pounds), and this backpack is designed to sit high so the weight doesn’t hang on your shoulders. Above all we loved what just how bloody hard wearing these beasts are. What I loved less was the price tag though.

  • Most durable backpack for laptops
  • Waterproof and weatherproof
  • Strength tested
  • Can fit 17 inch laptop

#13. Fjallraven Kanken Laptop Backpack

A simple and easy to use laptop backpack.

best carry on laptop bag fjallraven kanken

Fjallraven is one of the most recognizable backpack brands out there. Seriously, you can’t walk a mile in the city and not see someone sporting one of these boxy bags as they appeal to just about every type of person. The Fjallraven Kanken, one of the company’s flagship models, can also be used as a traveling laptop backpack. They are spacious enough to a hold a 15″ computer, include a nice dedicated laptop sleeve, and are pretty resistant to the elements. If you’re looking for something quick and easy, not to mention in-vogue, then buying all Fjallraven Kanken wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Fjallraven’s do have their limits though. I personally find their boxy design is a little awkward sometimes, although these bags are still comfortable to wear. If you need an everyday backpack, and not JUST a backpack for traveling, it’s hard to go wrong with the Fjallraven Kanken. It’s proven itself over and over and will probably keep on doing just that.

  • Rugged, water-resistant material
  • Very easy to use
  • Great for everyday use
  • Less protective padding

#14. The Roll Top Stubble & Co

Best hipster laptop backpack.

Stubble and Co Roll Top

We recently came across Stubble & Co and tried a bunch of their packs for ourselves – honestly we were seriously impressed by most of them. The Roll Top is a great hipster-style 20L bag perfect for carrying around your laptop as well as having heaps of room for your other accessories. What really makes it stand out for a day pack is that the laptop compartment is in a separate pocket on the back of the bag. This both makes it mega secure (especially for a roll top) and also saves the massive main compartment for everything else.

Internally the main compartment is one massive space with a selection of pockets and organisers attached to the other side of the laptop compartment/ back panel. This works well giving you some level of organisation whilst also being super roomy.

  • Capable of carrying laptops up to 16”
  • Roll top makes it expandable
  • Durable and weather resistant material
  • Could do with more internal organisation
  • Would like an internal zip as well as the roll top

#15 Tom Toc T73-x

Hottest new laptop pack.

The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack is the perfect travel companion for digital nomads. It offers a large capacity along with many compartments for organisation. The size is generally perfect for 5-7 days of light packing and has fast become one of my favourite bits of travel gear .

I chose this backpack as my travel bag for all my weekend getaway trips while backpacking through Southeast Asia. It comfortably fits my stuff for weekend getaways and helps me stay organised with the handy laptop sleeve.

I really love all the compartments included; they help me stay extremely organised. It has a large capacity for longer trips and It’s easy to find most of my belongings. The only downside is its build for a woman. I find the bag to be a bit big and bulky on me. But I love the large capacity for longer trips. I find it easy to find most of my belongings.

Tomtoc t73x backpack

  • Ace organisation capacity
  • Durable, high quality and stylish
  • Not large enough for long trips
  • Maybe kinda bulky

In order to safely transport your laptop from place to place, you need a protective vessel that not only works hard to keep your tech safe but is also comfortable to carry around with you.

Backpacks are the preferred bag type of students, commuters, and frequent flyers. Finding one that will fit your laptop as well as your day-to-day belongings will make travel just a little bit easier.

Laptop Backpack size

The size of your backpack should be large enough to comfortably accommodate your laptop and accessories, yet small enough to fit in an overhead bin.

Internal compartments should be roomy enough to fit not just your laptop and charger, but also all your vital necessities, including your wallet , cell phone, glasses, keys, and all the other things you rely on, to prevent you from needing to carry yet another purse or shoulder bag with you.

The size of your laptop will dictate the size of your backpack. Laptop backpacks have a dedicated, padded compartment to slip your laptop into, so it’s important to make sure that the pocket is large enough to fit your laptop.

Standard size dimensions include 15-, 16-, and 17-inch laptop compartments. The thickness of your laptop can make a difference in whether or not it fits, so be sure to take that into account.

Laptop backpack weight

Because laptops and all of their necessary paraphernalia can be heavy to carry around, your laptop backpack needs to be as lightweight as possible.

You want to be able to work on the move, but not be so weighed down that you suffer back strain while getting there. Laptops are designed to be portable, so the backpack that you carry it in should be easy and comfortable to carry as well.

Material and Durability

Laptop Backpack Material

The level of protection your laptop backpack offers is one of the most vital aspects of its purpose. Your laptop needs protection not just from knocks and drops, but also from wet weather.

Some of the very best laptop backpacks on the market are made using waterproof (or at least water-resistant) material that will protect your laptop from the elements and is easy to clean.

Make sure that the material your laptop backpack is made out of is durable, resistant to abrasions, and won’t rip or tear, leaving your laptop vulnerable to the outside.

Meshed backs, curved back systems, and padded through-flows are also useful backpack design features that stop you from getting a sweaty back when carrying your backpack for long periods of time or in hot weather.

Handles and Straps

Laptop Backpack straps

The beauty of a backpack is that it leaves your hands free for carrying coffee, checking social media on your phone, or holding on to your plane ticket. It’s essential that your backpack have strong, durable straps that will carry all the weight you put in it without tiring out your shoulders.

Comfort is also key.  Handles and straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders. They should be able to carry the weight of the bag with ease and not start to come loose or strain at the seams.

Backpack straps and handles should also be adjustable so you can find the most comfortable position that doesn’t cause back strain.

Laptop Compartment and Pockets

Laptop Backpack

A superb laptop backpack should have multiple pockets and spaces to store all of your items.

The laptop compartment itself must be well-padded to ensure that your device is kept safe from knocks and damage at all times.

Additional pockets should be carefully devised to ensure that they can hold your chargers and cables without squashing or tangling them. There should also be a good variety of internal pockets that can be zipped up tight to keep USB sticks and other peripherals safe.

There should be plenty of room for your wallet, keys, and phone, all kept safely away from the laptop compartment to avoid scratching or damage as you reach in to grab what you need.

Smart Luggage

When it was first invented, smart luggage was considered to be the most exciting thing to happen in the world of carry-on bags . Cabin bags and laptop cases fitted with this type of technology were a real game-changer.

That was until airlines banned them due to the risk of carrying lithium batteries on packed commuter flights.

You can still take your smart luggage into the cabin, but there are very strict rules that apply. You must be able to remove the battery from the smart luggage in case it needs to be checked. This news may change your mind about paying the extra dollar for these handy features.

But fear not, dear flyer, for there are plenty of excellent laptop backpacks on the market without lithium batteries that will keep your beloved laptop safe and sound while you travel.

While there are many, many laptop backpacks on the market to choose from, only a few of them really make the grade. Here are some of our favorites.

15 Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

A good laptop backpack needs to be a protective home for your expensive device. The top packs we tested do that and much, much more.

computer bags for travel

Traveling with a laptop can be stressful, and I know how important it is to get the right backpack to keep your machine safe, but still easily accessible while traveling.

I worked for several years as a product engineer, and I frequently had to travel for weeks at a time while hauling my big-ass engineering laptop along for the ride. I went through several backpacks trying to find one that worked well, and along the way, I learned a lot about what sets the best laptop backpacks apart from the mediocre alternatives.

My first priority in a laptop backpack is that it has ample protection to keep my computer safe from bumps and dings while traveling. It also needs to be super easy to access my device so I can catch up on emails on the go or pull it out for TSA.

Of course, my backpack is going to be carrying more than just my laptop. I want a pack that has enough space and organization for charging cords, headphones, books, water bottles, and anything else I need to bring with me.

Without further ado, here are my top 15 laptop backpacks for travel:

  • Best Laptop Backpack Overall: NOMATIC Backpack
  • Best Travel Laptop Backpack: Aer Tech Pack 2
  • Most Affordable Laptop Backpack: Matein Travel Laptop Backpack
  • Best Waterproof Laptop Backpack: Rains Backpack
  • Best Full-Featured Laptop Backpack: Swissgear 1900 ScanSmart
  • Most Stylish Laptop Backpack: Bellroy Melbourne
  • Best Travel Backpack for Laptop and Camera: WANDRD PRVKE
  • Best Laptop Messenger Bag: Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag 2.0
  • Best Leather Laptop Backpack: Harber London Slim Laptop Backpack
  • Best Hiking Laptop Bag: Gregory Juxt 34
  • Best Travel Backpack for 17-inch Laptop: KÜHL Eskape 25
  • Most Durable Laptop Backpack for Travel: Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Laptop Backpack
  • Best Travel Laptop Backpack for Women: Patagonia Atom Tote Pack
  • Best Laptop Backpack for Men: Peak Design Everyday Backpack
  • Best Gaming Laptop Backpack: Timbuk2 x ASTRO Gaming BP35 Backpack

NOMATIC Backpack : Best Laptop Backpack Overall

Nomatic Camera Backpack

Nomatic is based in my home state of Utah, a hub for adventurous folks of all sorts. They started on Kickstarter with an innovative wallet design, and now they sell a wide range of well-designed and well-built travel gear. Their sleek, functional designs make them one of our top backpack brands .

The NOMATIC Backpack is their classic urban pack that is perfectly optimized for traveling with a laptop. The padded laptop sleeve is very protective, easily accessible, and has room for most full-size devices.

This laptop bag opens with a YKK-brand zipper that wraps around the entire perimeter. This zipper is super smooth and durable, and the massive wide opening makes it super easy to access anything inside without having to dig.

You also get tons of small pockets for organization. There is a water bottle pocket on the side, a big external pocket with several separate compartments, and more zippered pockets inside the main compartment.

One I don’t love about this bag is that it only comes in black. Actually, I think all NOMATIC products are black, I’m not sure if they sponsor Batman, but that’s the only color you’ll see on their bags. It looks very sleek and professional, but I personally prefer to have some color choice and a bit of personality.

It also only fits up to a 15.6-inch laptop size. That’s standard size so most people will be covered, but if you have a big 17-inch laptop you’ll need a bigger bag.

This bag comes in either a 14 L or 20 L size. I’d recommend going with the larger 20 L just to make sure you have enough space. It still isn’t huge, but it has an expandable design that gives you 4 L of extra space when you need it. If you carry a lot of stuff on a regular basis, you’ll probably want something a tad bigger, but for a slim pack that can fit a bit more when needed, this is a great choice.

  • Technical Specs

Aer Tech Pack 2 : Best Travel Laptop Backpack

Aer Tech Pack 2

Aer is a San Francisco-based travel brand that started with a crowdfunding campaign for a hybrid gym bag/work bag. They build a wide array of travel bags centered around durable materials, simple designs, and functional features for travel.

If you’re going to be flying with your laptop, it’s important to have a bag that is specifically designed with the requirements of travel in mind. The Aer Tech Pack 2 is a streamlined, thoughtfully-designed laptop pack that works really well for travel because it is protective and packed with travel-oriented features.

The center of this bag is the suspended laptop pocket that isolates your computer from the outside. This means it is protected from bumps or impacts while you’re traveling. It’s also very easy to access your laptop through a dedicated zipper.

This versatile backpack has a luggage handle pass-through strap on the back panel. This means it’s super easy to attach it to the top of your luggage for wheeling through the airport. You also have grab handles on the top and side that make it easy to carry in any orientation.

I’ve spent a lot of time wearing a backpack while traveling, and if it isn’t comfortable, my shoulders get pretty sore after a few hours. The Aer Tech Pack nails it with comfort. It has nice wide, thickly-padded shoulder straps and a chest strap to help distribute the load.

It is also made with super durable materials. You get burly 1680D Cordura on the sides and a waterproof 840D front panel. This pack has a lot of structure, so it keeps its shape even when it’s empty, and it feels very sturdy and substantial. I seriously doubt you’ll be able to

Of course, those thick, tough materials do make this pretty heavy for a relatively small backpack (it’s only 17L). If you’re concerned about weight, you may want something else. I haven’t found the weight to be much of a problem though, and I’d rather have a bag that can take some abuse.

Matein Travel Laptop Backpack : Most Affordable Laptop Backpack

MATEIN Travel Laptop Backpack

I get it, sometimes you just need the cheapest product you can find that still gets the job done. I’m a bit of a cheapskate, and I try to save money wherever I can.

If you’re strapped for cash, the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack on Amazon gives you a totally functional everyday backpack at an insanely low price.

The most important thing here is the padded laptop sleeve. It’s not the most protective out there, but it does have some cushioning to protect your device from small bumps.

You also get tons of internal pockets. Almost to the point where there are more than you could ever possibly need. There are water bottle pockets, four different compartments you can access from the outside, and several slip pockets and zippered pockets in each compartment. I personally would prefer something a bit simpler, but if you like having a place for everything, you’ll love the abundant organization here.

One thing I like about this bag is that there is an array of size choices, and it’s very obvious what laptop size fits in each one. You can buy a 14-inch, 15.6-inch, or 17-inch bag, and the size exactly corresponds to the size of device that will fit in the laptop sleeve. This takes a lot of the guesswork out of getting a bag that will fit your laptop.

Now with such a cheap bag, you can expect some compromises. The materials and components aren’t great, the zippers aren’t very smooth, and it’s just plain ugly, to be blunt. Okay, it’s not that bad, but you definitely won’t be winning any style awards.

The shoulder straps do have some padding, but it isn’t much.

If you’re on a super tight budget, this Matein backpack does what you need at a fantastic price point. Still, if you can scrape together a little extra cash, there are some other packs on this list that are higher quality while still being quite affordable. And hey, you can always look for a used bag to save money.

Rains Backpack : Best Waterproof Laptop Backpack

Rains Waterproof Backpack

When I was in college I used to carry a kitchen trash bag inside my backpack to wrap around my computer if I ever got caught in heavy rain or snow (which happened frequently). You know what? It worked great. I would roll into class with a totally waterlogged backpack, but my laptop would be nice and dry. That one trash bag lasted three years, too.

I probably would have saved a lot of hassle by getting myself a waterproof backpack , though.

Rains is a modern lifestyle brand built around selling stylish waterproof products, from jackets to packs. They’ve developed a signature PU-coated fabric that’s sleek, durable, and fully waterproof.

The Rains Backpack is a streamlined, minimalist bag that uses combines this fabric with a dialed-in design to give you an ultra-stylish backpack that will keep your laptop (and everything else) dry when the heavens dump on you.

It definitely isn’t a full-on dry pack. Don’t plan on taking your laptop on a whitewater rafting trip with this, but as long as the water is falling from the sky, this

This backpack is incredibly simple and stripped down. You get one top-opening main compartment with a magnetic flap closure, a laptop pocket that fits 15-inch devices, a phone-sized zip pocket in the back panel, and, well, that’s it.

While I do love simplicity, I wish there were just a bit more organization in this bag. Laptop backpacks have to carry things like a charging cord, mouse, adapters, and other computer accessories, so a few more pockets would be a welcome addition.

Another thing it lacks is padded straps. The Rains Backpack only has thin webbing shoulder straps to carry the load. While this works fine, I’d want something more padded and supportive for carrying it on longer days.

For true minimalists, though, this pack has everything you need and nothing you don’t. And it really shows in the styling. The Rains Backpack is just plain stunning.

Swissgear 1900 ScanSmart : Best Full-Featured Laptop Backpack

Swissgear 1900 ScanSmart

Maybe you’re the kind of person who likes to be prepared for anything. Maybe your EDC setup includes a knife, multitool, flashlight, tactical pen, altimeter watch, and miniature pry bar. Maybe, just maybe, you wear cargo pants on a regular basis (no judgment here).

If you like to be prepared, you’ll want to look for laptop backpacks that are packed with features and organization to keep all your kit neat and accessible. Swissgear is known for building feature-packed travel gear, and their 1900 ScanSmart Laptop Backpack is loaded with features.

The most innovative feature of this pack is the ScanSmart lay-flat laptop sleeve. It’s everything you’d expect from a protective, padded laptop pocket, with enough space for most big 1, but then a wraparound zipper lets the whole back panel and laptop sleeve fold out from the main bag and lay flat, with just a mesh panel covering your laptop. This means you can send the bag and laptop through airport security scanning without fully removing your device.

I really hate digging my laptop out of my bag to go through security, so I love this feature that eliminates that hassle. This makes it a great laptop bag for frequent flyers.

Beyond the neat laptop sleeve, this bag is packed with pockets and features. There are 6 different compartments you can access through external zippers, each of which has several internal pockets for extra organization. It has elastic suspension shoulder straps, a hidden sleeve for passports, a protective hard case pocket, side compression straps, a “floating” tablet pocket, and even a dedicated webbing loop for holding sunglasses. And with 31 L of storage, there’s plenty of space for all your essentials and then some.

If this bag has a problem, it’s that it is too loaded-down with features to the point of being overcomplicated. You’ll never run out of places to put things, but you might not know what to do with all the pockets!

It has two water bottle pockets, but I don’t love them. They are made of a thin mesh and are too small for larger bottles.

My biggest gripe? I think this bag is pretty ugly. It has a very utilitarian, bulky styling that just doesn’t look great to me. Is it a great, functional bag though? Absolutely.

Bellroy Melbourne : Most Stylish Laptop Backpack

Bellroy Melbourne

Even though I like to see myself as utilitarian and function first, I have to admit that style is important. When I have gear that looks good, I am more excited to use it, and I feel better when I’m traveling. A backpack with sleek, dialed-in styling has an almost magical effect; it makes me feel more confident and put together—like I could step off the ground and fly…

Okay, maybe I’m getting a bit carried away there, but you get the idea. We all like gear that looks good.

The Bellroy Melbourne is a slim city-oriented backpack that combines spot-on styling with smart functionality. It probably won’t stand out in a crowd, but it’s hard to deny the appeal of the minimal, understated styling.

The laptop sleeve is well-padded and has enough room for a 15-inch device. I just wish you could access it without opening the main compartment of the bag, but since it’s easy to get to, that’s not a big deal.

The closure system for this pack is very unique, and I’ve found it to be really intuitive to use. There is just a simple flap opening at the top, with magnets to hold it closed. There is also a zipper running down the full length of one side of the pack. You can choose to get in either way, or you can use both to fold it wide open, making it super easy to pack or get to all your items inside.

At 18 L, this is a pretty small backpack, so you won’t be fitting a ton inside. There’s also an even smaller 12 L version, but unless you are a true minimalist, I’d recommend sticking with the bigger size.

WANDRD PRVKE : Best Travel Backpack for Laptop and Camera

WANDRD PRVKE 41

If you’re carrying camera gear in addition to your laptop, you have a very specific set of requirements from your bag. You need to look for camera backpacks that offer tons of padding and protection for all your sensitive equipment.

WANDRD was started by two brothers who couldn’t find a camera bag on the market that fit their requirements. Instead of settling for something mediocre, they decided to set out to build one themselves and make it the best camera backpack ever.

The WANDRD PRVKE is the original award-winning pack they built (though it’s seen some improvements over the years).

The first thing you’ll notice about the PRVKE is that it has tons of options for accessing your gear. There is a simple roll-top opening, full-length zippers that let you fold open the entire body of the bag, and side-access pockets so you can get to your gear on the go.

The laptop sleeve on the PRVKE is built into the fold-open front panel (instead of right next to your back like most packs). This means it’s super easy to access your laptop while you’re traveling. The downside is that if you don’t have the bag packed very full, your laptop can awkwardly shift around since it’s on the side farthest from your body.

If you’re carrying camera gear, you’ll want to opt for the photography bundle, which includes a removable padded camera cube, removable waist straps to carry more weight comfortably, and accessory straps for mounting tripods or other gear on the outside of the pack.

The padded shoulder straps are wide and comfortable, though I wish waist straps came standard with this pack. You do get them with the photography bundle, so maybe that’s not a problem for most people who will be buying this bag.

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag 2.0 : Best Laptop Messenger Bag

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag

Okay, yes, this is an article on the best laptop backpacks , but I think it is worth having one shoulder bag in here. While backpacks are becoming more and more common in workplaces, there still are some times that you want to look a bit more professional, and a sleek messenger bag is a great option for that.

Timbuk2 was started in 1989 by a San Francisco bike courier who wanted to create a functional messenger bag for urban travelers. The first Timbuk2 product was the classic messenger bag, and they’ve been improving their designs ever since.

The Commute Messenger Bag 2.0 is a refined bag with a dedicated laptop compartment, dialed-in styling, and smart features. It’s simple, but well-built and easy to use.

The laptop sleeve on this bag is roomy and well-padded. You’ll be able to fit most full-sized devices (though giant 17-inch screens won’t fit), and there’s plenty of protection to keep your machine safe.

The versatile design can convert between a shoulder carry, cross-body carry, or briefcase depending on how you set up the straps. I love having options.

Before you jump on buying this, I personally would recommend you make sure to consider whether you really want a messenger bag over a backpack. I’ve had problems with messenger bags causing discomfort after carrying them for hours at a time, and there are plenty of professional-looking backpacks that still look at home in an office environment.

If you know you need a messenger bag, though, I highly recommend the Timbuk2 Commute.

Harber London Slim Laptop Backpack : Best Leather Laptop Backpack

Harber London Slim Laptop Backpack

In my mind, there’s nothing quite like high-quality leather backpacks . I love the buttery-smooth feel of the leather, the awesome durability, and the way leather looks better over time and tells the story of your travels.

Harber London is a family-owned brand based in (you guessed it) London that specializes in premium leather goods that merge old-world craftsmanship with modern design. Their wallets, bags, and accessories are stylish, well-made, and very functional.

The Harber London Slim Laptop Backpack is a stripped-back pack that’s designed to give you exactly what you need

It all starts with the materials. The Harber London Slim Laptop Backpack is built with premium full-grain leather. The leather they use is tough and durable but smooth and supple at the same time.

The design of this backpack is very simple. It is a low-profile rectangle with a top zippered opening, a padded laptop sleeve, a few internal pockets for organization, and one external zippered pocket.

This pack is very minimal and compact. I love the sleek, slim design, but it doesn’t have much room for carrying stuff. You can fit a laptop (up to 16-inches), a few accessories, and not much else. If that’s all you need, then this will work great, but it doesn’t have much versatility for using as a day pack when you need to bring more along.

The leather shoulder straps on this bag don’t have padding, but they are reasonably wide. Normally, I would want much more supportive and padded shoulder straps, but since you won’t be able to carry much weight anyway, it isn’t much of a problem.

The biggest downside with this bag? The cost. It’s a high-end backpack, and unfortunately, the price reflects that.

The quality and craftsmanship of the Slim Laptop Backpack are really what set it apart from anything else. It looks amazing, feels even better, and is really well thought out.

Gregory Juxt 34 : Best Hiking Laptop Bag

Gregory Juxt 34

If I’m traveling to a new place, odds are I’m going to be exploring its hiking trails (even if I’m technically on a work trip). It seems silly to bring a separate hiking pack in addition to my laptop/work bag, so I want something that can fit both purposes and kill two birds with one stone.

Gregory builds some of the best hiking backpacks out there, and the Gregory Juxt 34 is an adventure travel backpack that combines the trail comfort and support of their hiking bags with styling and features that make it ready for around-the-world travel.

If I were to travel back to Nepal to go trekking in the Himalayas again, this is the bag I would choose to bring, especially if I were bringing any tech with me.

This pack comes with a removable “electronics caddy” which is essentially a padded sleeve with space for a 15” laptop, tablet, headphones, cables, and other electronics. I love the fact that it’s easily removable, meaning you can pull out your laptop and electronics if you’re going for a hike. The pack is also designed to fit a hydration bladder in the same space. The versatility is awesome!

The Juxt is built around a trail-oriented suspension, which means it has a supportive wrap-around hip belt, padded straps that wrap around your shoulders, a sternum strap to dial in the fit, and a perimeter frame to distribute the load to your hips. This is a much more supportive design than most travel packs. You’ll be able to carry heavier loads with ease, both on trails and through the airport.

This bag has several other features you’d expect in a full-on hiking backpack. There are generous hip belt pockets, compression straps to cinch down your load, and even load lifters on the shoulder straps. Load lifters are adjustable straps connecting the backpack straps to the top of the frame. It’s rare to see them in travel bags, and they make a huge difference in distributing the weight.

I do wish the hip belt was removable or could stow away somehow. While I love having a hip belt for hiking, it really just gets in the way at the airport.

Overall, if you’re looking for a versatile pack that can carry your laptop and go for a hike, the Gregory Juxt is the best one I’ve found.

KÜHL Eskape 25 : Best Travel Backpack for 17-inch Laptop

KUHL Eskape 25 Laptop Backpack

KÜHL is another Utah-based brand that builds rugged gear inspired by the mountains. Many of their products remind me just a bit of old-school frontier explorers.

The KÜHL Eskape 25 is designed to be the “world’s best backpack.” While that claim is a bit audacious, I do think KÜHL did a great job making this a bomber, versatile pack that works great for traveling with a laptop.

If you’re one of those people who travels around with a massive 17-screen, you know how hard it can be to find a good backpack that fits your monstrous device. The highlight of the KÜHL is the massive laptop compartment that can swallow even the biggest laptops with ease.

The laptop sleeve is very protective, with ample padding around the sides and bottom. It also is totally separate from the main compartment, meaning it’s super easy to get your device out when you need it.

Beyond the laptop storage, you have a surprisingly spacious main compartment that zips fully open, making it really easy to pack and access your stuff. There are also several external zippered pockets to keep small essentials within easy access.

The padded straps are enough to spread the weight over your shoulders, but I personally wish they were a bit more substantial for those times when I have to carry heavier loads.

Like all of KÜHL’s products, the Eskape 25 has a pretty rugged, outdoorsy style. While I love that, it probably isn’t for everyone. There definitely are other packs that look more refined and stylish.

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Laptop Backpack : Most Durable Laptop Backpack for Travel

Osprey Farpoint 40L Travel Pack

Osprey is known for building some of the most popular backpacking and hiking packs in the business. That expertise also carries over to a range of fantastic everyday and travel backpacks. Their travel packs are durable, supportive, and packed with features.

The Osprey Farpoint 40 is different from most of the other backpacks on this list because it is built as a full-size carry-on backpack. If you want to travel with one bag to carry all your clothes and your laptop, this is the way to go.

The Farpoint has a side-access laptop sleeve right against the back panel, where it is very padded and protected. I like that it’s totally separate from the main compartment, so you don’t have to dig through to get your laptop out.

Speaking of the main compartment—it’s big! Surprisingly so. It opens up wide and gives you plenty of space to pack clothes and gear for extended trips (as long as you’re a light packer).

For me, the comfortable carry system is a big win for this bag. I hate how so many big travel packs skimp on support, padding, and hip belts. The best backpacks for one-bag travel focus on comfort, and it’s pretty obvious that Osprey used a lot of their knowledge from hiking packs in designing this. It has a sturdy frame sheet with a wire perimeter frame, well-padded straps, a very supportive hip belt, load lifters, and a sternum strap.

The backpack straps can also all be tucked away behind a zippered panel, leaving you with a smooth surface that’s much easier to stuff into overhead bins. It also means you don’t have to worry about straps getting snagged when it runs through security machines.

One downside of using this as your laptop bag for one-bag travel is that it doesn’t fit under your seat on the airplane and has to go in the overhead bin. This means you won’t have access to your laptop if you leave it in the bag. There are multiple zippered mesh pockets inside to help with organization.

My biggest complaint is that there’s no side water bottle pocket! I hate keeping my bottle inside my bag (or worse, clipping it on with a carabiner), so It’s a bummer that there’s no dedicated water bottle holder here. It’s such a simple feature and is standard on most packs, so I’m not sure why Osprey got this one wrong.

Patagonia Atom Tote Pack : Best Travel Laptop Backpack for Women

Patagonia Atom Tote Pack

It can be a challenge to find a backpack for women , especially those with smaller frames. You need something that carries everything you need without being overly big and bulky. The Patagonia Atom Tote Pack is a compact bag that’s designed to provide a smaller fit while still providing a surprising amount of storage.

Patagonia is one of the most well-known brands in the outdoor industry, and they build some seriously capable gear. My favorite thing about Patagonia, though, is their commitment to sustainability. The Atom Tote Pack is made from recycled nylon and polyester, is Fair Trade Certified, and has a water-repellant finish that is free from harmful PFC chemicals.

The overall design of the pack is very simple and streamlined. There’s a zippered-opening main compartment with a removable laptop sleeve inside. I really like the removable sleeve because it adds a lot of versatility; you can use this pack for your laptop one day and a day hike the next day.

One major downside is that it won’t fit full-size laptops. While that’s to be expected from a small pack like this, it still is a bit of a disappointment. If you have a compact device though, that may be no problem.

There is a stretchy water bottle holder on each side of the pack, meaning it’s easy to stay on top of your hydration while you travel. Even though this is a small-ish bag, there’s room for big bottles like Nalgenes.

Bonus? While Patagonia generally is known for being somewhat expensive, this pack is actually the most affordable on this list!

Peak Design Everyday Backpack : Best Laptop Backpack for Men

Peak Design Everyday Backpack

I think that Peak Design builds some of the most innovative and well-thought-out backpacks out there. They are unique in that crowdfunding is built into their design and production process. It’s not just how they got started, it’s how they jumpstart all of their new and innovative products.

For men looking for the absolute best laptop backpack, the Peak Design Everyday Backpack is a super functional, versatile, and well-built pack that works well on all fronts. It’s designed to work really well as a camera pack, but it’s capable of way more than that.

First, the laptop storage. The Peak Design Everyday Backpack has a top-access dedicated laptop compartment that is super easy to get into without opening the main body of the bag.

For getting into the main compartment, you have lots of choices. There is a lock-shut flap opening on the top and big zippered openings on either side. The side openings mean it’s really easy to get something out of the bottom of your bag without digging through everything else.

The inside of the bag is padded and has removable dividers that you can use if you’re carrying camera gear (or anything else for that matter). Though this works really well as a camera bag, I’ve found the dividers are actually pretty useful for keeping my everyday electronics organized and accessible.

My biggest complaint with this bag is the price. It is way more expensive than most simple daypacks, and you may have a hard time justifying the spend. If you want a top-notch feature-packed backpack, though, this is a great choice.

It’s available in two sizes, 20 L and 30 L, so you can get the perfect size for your needs.

Timbuk2 x ASTRO Gaming BP35 Backpack : Best Gaming Laptop Backpack

Timbuk2 Astro Gaming BP35 Backpack

If you’re a serious PC gamer and need the ultimate backpack for carrying all your kit, Timbuk2 has an awesome range of seriously capable packs that are some of the best out there that are designed specifically for gaming.

The Timbuk2 x ASTRO Gaming BP35 Backpack is a purpose-built laptop bag for hardcore gamers. It has protective storage for two full-size laptops and all the accessories you can think of.

There are pockets galore both inside and outside, so you’ll have no problem finding places to keep all your charging cords, controllers, and more.

I love the fact that this bag has a specific hanger for over-ear headphones. It’s a small detail, but that’s just one example of how every feature is well-thought-out and purpose-built for gamers.

This is very much a niche backpack, so if you aren’t regularly carrying a big gaming laptop and all the associated tech, you may want something a little more simple and versatile.

How to Choose the Best Laptop Backpack for Travel

Choosing the right laptop backpack is no easy task, and it depends a lot on how will you use it. Do you need a reliable everyday backpack or a spacious carry-on backpack? Will you use it for commuting? travel? hiking? all of the above?

Here are some of the top factors to keep in mind as you search for the perfect pack for your needs.

Laptop Size

This one is easy to overlook, but not all laptop backpacks will fit every laptop. A few years ago I got a new, chunky 15.6-inch laptop for work, only to find it didn’t fit in my old laptop pack. I didn’t want to buy a new bag, so I ended up cutting slits in the side of the laptop compartment to make it fit (this is the same pack where I used a trash bag to keep my laptop dry in downpours).

Needless to say, getting a pack that fits your laptop correctly is a better solution. Most manufacturers will clearly label what size laptop their pack can fit.

When in doubt, I’d get a pack that can fit a 15-inch laptop. This covers most compact and full-size devices (including 15.6-inch screens).

Computers are expensive, delicate machines, and it’s important to keep your laptop safe while you travel. It’s worth looking for a pack that has lots of padding around the laptop compartment.

One feature you can look for is a “suspended” laptop sleeve. This means the sleeve is held up an inch or two from the bottom of the bag so there is more between your laptop and the ground if you ever drop it.

Laptop Accessibility

A bag can have the best laptop protection, sturdiest construction, and most comfortable design out there, but it won’t do its job if it’s impossible to get your laptop out when it’s fully packed. When you’re traveling, it is important to have easy access to your device, whether you need to pull it out for airport security scanning or catch up on work tasks.

I prefer packs with a laptop compartment that is totally separate from everything else. That way I don’t have to dig through the main compartment of my pack to pull it out.

Total Storage

You’re going to be carrying more than just a laptop in your backpack, so it’s important to consider the overall space that’s available. Backpack size is usually measured by how many liters of volume fit inside.

  • If you just need to bring your laptop, accessories, and a few small essentials with you, a pack under 20 L should work just fine.
  • 20-30 L packs work well if you need to carry more stuff, but aren’t packing everything for a trip in your backpack.
  • If you are traveling and will be using your backpack as your only luggage, you’ll probably want 40 L or more of room.

Laptop Backpack Accessories

Here are some of the top accessories to get with your laptop backpack to make sure you’re fully outfitted for travel:

July Tech Kit

July Tech Kit

It can be hard to keep track of small electronic items like cables, headphones, and chargers. I usually end up losing them deep in my backpack and having to dig through to find them.

This little case gives you a dedicated place for those small, easy-to-lose items. With room for earbuds, chargers, cables, a usb battery bank, and a pen/stylus, you won’t have to worry about losing anything.

The transparent plastic case protects your electronics while making it easy to see what’s inside, while elastic holders keep everything secure and organized.

ProCase Headphone Case

Procase Headphone Case

If you’re traveling with a laptop, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be bringing headphones along too. I personally vastly prefer full-size over-ear headphones to earbuds.

Unfortunately, I recently broke my nice headphones on a trip when I had them stuffed in the bottom of my backpack. Now I always recommend having a hardshell headphone case for protection.

The ProCase Headphone Case isn’t anything super fancy. It’s a zippered hard-sided zippered case that will fit most over-ear headphones. It’s affordable and does a great job at keeping your headphones safe during travel.

REI Co-op Duck’s Back Rain Cover

REI Co-op Duck's Back Rain Cover

While some of the packs on this list are fully waterproof, not all of them are. If you ever expect to be out in rainy weather, I highly recommend having a dedicated rain cover for your backpack to make sure your laptop and everything else stays dry. Trust me, it’s a much better solution than wrapping your computer in a trash bag.

The REI Duck’s Back Rain Cover is a simple cover that’s made out of highly waterproof silicone-coated polyester. Water beads right off, so your pack stays totally dry.

It has an elastic border that wraps easily around pretty much any backpack. The XS size fits 18 L – 30 L packs, so pretty much any backpack on this list.

Why Trust TravelFreak?

We are a team of digital nomads, working from our laptops as we travel the world. We’ve tested dozens of packs in real-world conditions, and you can bet we’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a good laptop backpack for travel.

Everything on this list is something we personally would use in our own travels. In fact, many of these backpacks have seen months of hard use on our shoulders.

We did our homework so you don’t have to. We really dug deep into the features, materials, and performance of each pack to see how they measure up to the competition. Not every bag on this list will be the best at everything, but we’re confident each product is the absolute best in its own specific niche.

14 best business travel backpacks for every budget

Zach Griff

If you travel regularly for work, you won't need us to tell you that a good travel backpack is essential. That's especially true if a backpack can double as a decently sized carry-on luggage item while still housing your laptop in an easily accessible compartment.

We looked at some of the best (and most stylish) backpacks out there to take the hassle out of searching for the best item.

Without further ado, here are the best business travel backpacks that maximize form and function across various budgets.

Amazon Basics Laptop Backpack, $33.47

computer bags for travel

If you don't want to break the bank, the Amazon Basics range offers a reliable and, dare we say, fairly stylish backpack for less than $40.

The bag has a dedicated (and padded) laptop sleeve that can easily hold a laptop up to 17 inches in size; it has additional compartments for pens, keys, cellphones and other items.

There's also a water bottle pocket on both sides of the bag for easy access when you're on the go.

Buy from $33.47

Lenovo Legion Gaming Laptop Bag, $55.19 (normally $79.99)

computer bags for travel

Admittedly, we've never seen Batman carry a backpack, but if he did, we're pretty sure it'd look something like this robust bag by Lenovo. It has a 20-liter capacity and room for a 16-inch laptop, alongside seven inside pockets to suit all your work travel needs — including a hidden compartment for valuables.

Built for carrying electronic items, the bag features foam antishock bumpers on the corners of the laptop compartment for extra protection against bag drops and other jolts.

There's also a high-quality magnetic lock to keep your items safe.

Buy from $55.19 (normally $79.99)

Tangcorle Travel Carry On Backpack, $58.90

computer bags for travel

Part backpack and part carry-on suitcase, this bag has an expandable design. This means it has a capacity of 36 to 50 liters and should easily fit the maximum carry-on size for most airlines.

Other features include an external USB port with a built-in charging cable, allowing you to attach your own power bank and keep your devices charged while on the go.

The main compartment is similar to one in an ordinary carry-on suitcase and can easily store five to seven days' worth of clothes, depending on how you like to pack. It is perfect for long weekends and short business trips.

Buy from $58.90

Samsonite Novex Laptop Backpack, $69.99 (normally $99.99)

computer bags for travel

If you are shopping for a travel backpack from a reliable brand with a more down-to-earth budget, this Samsonite bestseller has a lot going for it.

Despite its price, the Novex Laptop Backpack doesn't compromise on the basics. The separate laptop and tablet pocket features a special webbing system that provides extra durability in case you drop the backpack. Plus, thanks to the special supportive lining on the top front pocket, you won't have to worry about misplacing your headphones, glasses or cellphone.

The main storage compartment has room for all the essentials, though you may not find it large enough for a full change of clothes or a pair of shoes.

Buy from $69.99 (normally $99.99)

The North Face Recon Everyday Laptop Backpack, $109

computer bags for travel

A modern classic, the Recon Everyday Laptop Backpack is a popular, on-trend design you'll frequently see on the backs of young professionals in buzzy city centers.

The backpack has two external water bottle holders and a main compartment capable of carrying up to 30 liters. Its laptop sleeve is also sizable and should easily hold machines up to 18 inches.

Perhaps its most interesting feature is the comfortable design of its shoulder straps, which are certified by the American Chiropractic Association.

Buy from $109

Ogio Renegade Backpack, $128.24 (normally $149.99)

computer bags for travel

If you're looking for the bag with the most pockets, this might be it. Ogio's flagship backpack has dedicated space for everything (laptop and iPad included) and then some. With a phone pocket, two zippered side pockets and five main pockets, you might just get lost looking around for your gear.

No matter how full you stuff this nearly 30-liter backpack, you shouldn't have much of a problem carrying it around, thanks to its supportive padded back panel and shoulder straps. This makes it easy to lug it around the airport or corporate campus.

Buy from $128.24 (normally $149.99)

Incase ARC Daypack, $129.95

computer bags for travel

Apple aficionados will no doubt be familiar with Incase, a popular brand of cases and protection solutions for iPhones, iPads and Macs.

The laptop pocket is big enough for a 16-inch computer, and it's lined in faux fur for additional protection. Its travel tech compartment also includes RFID-blocking technology, preventing thieves from stealing your digital information.

A water- and stain-resistant coating, two dedicated water bottle holders, and a pass-through system for rollaboard bags make this the ideal bag for anyone going from the gym to the office to the airport. If you need something bigger, Incase also makes a larger A.R.C. travel pack.

Need more convincing? Both bags are made from a sustainable mixture of recycled polyester, giving the company its A.R.C. acronym, which stands for "a responsible carry."

Buy from $129.95

Aer Pro Pack 20L, $179

computer bags for travel

As far as business travel backpacks go, Aer's is certainly quite stylish. It comes in three colors (black, navy and olive), and it's made of sustainable materials without compromising on durability. A separate laptop compartment safeguards your most precious technology, while the main compartment is large enough for all your chargers and other travel accessories.

The standout feature is the main compartment's 180-degree flat-open zipper system, giving you unobstructed access to all your belongings.

There's even a hidden pocket to store an AirTag or other tracker so that you can locate your bag even if it's stolen or misplaced.

Buy from $179

Away The Everywhere Zip Backpack, $195

computer bags for travel

Made with water-resistant nylon, the Everywhere backpack by Away has a full wraparound zip that provides access to the main compartment. Not only can you fit more things in an orderly fashion, but you'll also be able to easily see your things when you need to retrieve them from the backpack.

Alongside the main compartment, the bag also houses a 15-inch laptop pocket with a magnetic locking zipper and padded shoulder straps for comfort. It's available in five colors — including the limited-edition garnet colorway.

Buy from $195

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack, $209

computer bags for travel

The Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack has space for everything and then some. The padded rear pocket is the perfect spot for a laptop, so you won't have to dig through the main compartment to find your computer.

The main compartment is spacious and can expand by nearly 3 liters, giving you more room for your belongings. Plus, the front pocket has a dedicated organizer with multiple pockets, so you'll never forget where you put your passport, charger and cables.

Buy from $209

Nomatic 20L Backpack, $279.99

computer bags for travel

Although you may not have heard of Nomatic, this brand receives rave reviews from its loyalists. The company's bestselling backpack comes in two sizes: 14 liters and 20 liters. Both are expandable by nearly 20%.

The flat rectangular design may be controversial at first glance, but at least you can't complain about finding space for all of your gizmos. The bag has a staggering 24 unique storage compartments, ranging from enclosed pockets to mesh nets. It's a great bag for those who like to stay extremely organized when they're on the road.

Buy from $279.99

Briggs & Riley Traveler Backpack, $329

computer bags for travel

The Briggs & Riley backpack has an impressive amount of storage capability thanks to its multitude of pockets and 180-degree, lie-flat opening that allows unfettered access to every nook and cranny.

The laptop sleeve and tablet sleeve are in the same area as the main packing compartment, but they're separated by a zippered inner pocket to keep your clothes all by themselves.

There's also a so-called PowerPocket that fits an external battery pack and keeps a charging cable within easy reach — perfect for a quick boost of juice while you're on the go.

Buy from $329

Tumi Alpha Bravo Navigation Backpack, $525

computer bags for travel

Though Tumi makes a handful of durable bags, the Navigation Backpack excels for a wide range of travel needs. It features a separate padded laptop compartment (that can fit even the largest MacBooks), a main storage area and plenty of other smaller pockets.

It also has a zip expansion feature if you decide to grab some souvenirs during your travels.

The backpack comes in five colors, giving you plenty of choices to match your personal travel style.

Buy from $525

Rimowa Flap Backpack Large, $1,725

computer bags for travel

If you're looking to make a statement and are willing to spend some serious cash, Rimowa's travel bags are the way to go.

10 best weekender bags for your next getaway, according to a travel pro

Jean Chen Smith

May 27, 2024 // By Jean Chen Smith

By Jean Chen Smith May 27, 2024

Calpak's laptop duffel weekender bag makes travel a breeze

As a travel writer, good gear is essential. I've tested everything from travel strollers to pet carriers , but my most useful and favorite type of luggage is a weekender bag. Known for versatility and functionality, a weekender is an evolution — or grown-up, sophisticated version — of the original duffel bag. (PS: The name "duffel" comes from Duffel, Belgium, where sailors used thick fabric to make seabags in the late 17th century.)

Today's weekenders are available in various sizes, shapes, and colors. Still, its purpose is essentially the same as its name implies: A weekender bag is meant to hold all your items for a weekend trip, plus it can double as a personal item that fits under the seat on airplanes.

Reliable weekender bags should hold several days' worth of clothing, have multiple compartments to store and organize your accessories, and be durable, preferably made with waterproof and stain-resistant fabric. Depending on your travel needs, ask yourself what size weekender you'll need and what fabric you prefer. Some bags in the marketplace look super chic but aren't long-lasting, making them less practical.

Advertisement Advertisement

Additional details to look for in a good weekender bag include removable shoulder straps, exterior pockets for quick access to your travel paperwork, and whether it has a space for your laptop (if that's a non-negotiable).

Although there are many offerings, here are 10 of the best weekender bags for making quick trips and travel a breeze.

Best weekender bag for women: Patricia Nash Designs Avola Trolley

Pretty patterns are hallmarks of the Avola Trolley

The Avola Trolley is a beautiful statement piece for women who want to travel in style with ease. The feminine patina-coated pattern is easy to spot whether you're on a road trip or checking luggage. This weekender can also be used as a wheeled duffel when traversing airports and hotel lobbies, which makes it super pragmatic. The retractable handle is easily adjustable to several different heights, too.

The interior offers multiple pockets for organizing your travel essentials, while the exterior offers both a front and back slip pocket so you can easily access airline tickets and vouchers while on the move. Caught in the rain? No need to fret: It's durable and water-resistant.

Best weekender bag for men: Backcountry All Around 60L Duffel

This heavy-duty duffel has clean lines and lots of space

We chose the no-nonsense All Around 60L Duffel from Backcountry as the best pick for men because its durable, heavy-duty fabric withstands all weather conditions. Whether camping, on a road trip, or just heading on a weekend jaunt, this duffel offers 60 liters of capacity, allowing space for bulky gear, clothes, and other essentials.

Two interior mesh pockets store your smaller items, while the main compartment boasts a built-in lining to keep your belongings dry. The large side pocket is an excellent area to store dirty clothing or shoes, keeping them separate from the main section.

While most duffel bags don't have a base, the All Around has a protected foundation, which is helpful when packing fragile objects. You can wear it as a backpack (great for hiking) or use it as a handheld (great for airports). Another reason to love it: Backcountry offers a limited lifetime warranty on the bag.

Best weekender bag with shoe compartment: Béis The Weekender

Béis is one of the most respected brands for weekender bags

The iconic Béis The Weekender is the brand's best-selling bag and with good reason. It comes in nine sumptuous colors, and it's lightweight and functional. The wire frame and double-zip opening resemble an old-fashioned Gladstone bag, allowing the entire bag to open for quick and easy access. The interior boasts a padded laptop sleeve, a large zip pocket, and two slip pockets for arranging all your travel belongings.

The separate bottom compartment opens up and is ideal for storing shoes and toiletries. Added benefits are the trolley sleeve, which slides right over your luggage handle, removable shoulder straps, and a zippered front pocket. The brand offers additional add-ons like a dopp kit or packing cubes to match your corresponding color.

Best leather weekender bag: Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment Weekender

The Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment Weekender is sleek and practical

Whether heading to the Hamptons or SoCal, look sleek carrying the Quince Italian Leather Triple Compartment Weekender , which comes in three alluring colors. The price tag is a steal for a practical and fashionable bag that makes travel a breeze.

This weekender is made of 100% top-grain Italian leather and lined with cotton twill, which is easy to clean. Three zippered compartments keep your belongings organized, while the main compartment is roomy and offers three slip pockets for carrying cell phones and other supplies.

It has a removable shoulder strap so you can wear it as a crossbody and a luggage sleeve, so it can rest on your suitcase, making your journey a cinch. We also love that the brand works with sustainable factories to promote ethical business practices.

Best canvas weekender bag: Paravel Weekender

This stain-resistant heavy canvas weekender bag keeps things organized

The extremely chic Paravel Weekender is one of my favorites for a country-themed getaway . It looks like a picnic basket, except it's made of heavy-duty, stain-resistant EcoCraft Canvas and packs a ton of life's necessities when on the move. The handles and trim detailing are made of recycled vegan leather to support sustainability.

Two zippered pockets on the inside help keep things organized, while the main compartment can fit a laptop up to 15 inches. You can also personalize your bag with your initials and add a colorful cabana strap (sold separately). Other winning highlights are that it's TSA-compliant and fits most overhead bins.

Best backpack weekender bag: Monos Metro Backpack

This water-resistant weekender bag has ample space for all travel essentials

As a frequent flier, I can attest to the convenience of backpacks when maneuvering through airports. They help me keep my posture upright while promoting even weight distribution, so I can carry slightly more than a tote or crossbody. After hours of travel, a backpack like the Monos Metro Backpack can save the day.

Made of water-resistant nylon twill and vegan leather trims, this bag provides ample space to store clothing, books, and shoes. It also comes loaded with pockets to streamline organization: The interior features a zippered pouch, two pockets, and a large sleeve. A separate 15-inch laptop compartment is also in the back of the bag.

The Metro comes with the Metro Classic Kit, which is affixed to the backpack's body, allowing more storage space. It can also be used as a small dopp kit or makeup bag when removed. I find it useful for holding chargers, vitamins, and trial-size toiletries.

Best laptop weekender bag: Calpak Terra 26L Laptop Duffel

This coated bag keeps laptops safe and fits everything you need for a getaway

Made of recycled ripstop material and coated with laminate for water resistance, the Calpak Terra 26L Laptop Duffel Backpack makes travel easy — whether on an extended vacation or a quick weekend getaway. Weighing less than 3 pounds, it's a lightweight, multifunctional option for those needing ample laptop space (up to 17 inches) and lots of room for everything else, including clothing, toiletries, and shoes.

We like the Terra for its adjustable padded shoulder straps for comfort, luggage trolley sleeve, and multiple interior pocket options. Another helpful detail is the compression straps with buckles, which allow you to squeeze in a little extra when packing.

Best small weekender bag: State Franklin Weekender

The State Franklin Weekender bag is a great small and sleek option

I love the State Franklin Weekender for its classic style and versatility. The brand is known for reliable luggage and travel bags, so it's no surprise this makes our list. Minimalists love the generous-sized main compartment and interior pockets to store small essentials. Although it doesn't have a separate zippered compartment for your shoes, it does feature a shoe pocket.

Two exterior zippered pockets allow easy access to documents, chargers, earbuds, and more. It also has a removable shoulder strap, so you can wear it multiple ways. The only downside is that we'd like to see more colors in this super functional bag.

Best expandable weekender bag: Longchamp Le Pliage Original Expandable Travel Bag

This expandable travel bag wraps up nicely to a single side zipper

What could be more convenient than an expandable bag that caters to all your vacation needs? Look no further than Longchamp's Le Pliage Original Expandable Travel Bag , which ticks off all the short- and long-term travel boxes. This smartly designed bag has a middle zip insert that can expand from 30 liters to 50 liters. When empty, the bag weighs less than 2 pounds and is made of water and stain-resistant nylon.

Additional perks include the water-resistant interior lining and a removable and adjustable crossbody strap. Plus, it folds down flat when not in use. I highly recommend this bag for its versatility. Still, one thing to note is that it only has one small interior pocket, so if you need more organization, compression or packing cubes usually do the trick.

Best extra-large weekender bag: Baggallini Deluxe Fifth Avenue Weekender

This extra-large weekender bag is perfect for extra-long weekends

I like Baggallini's Deluxe Fifth Avenue Weekender for its spacious interior with a padded laptop pocket (it holds laptops up to 16 inches). The lid-top zipper opening allows easy access when packing and grabbing possessions on the fly. Two external zip pockets are great for holding passports, paperwork, and other go-to items, making it a breeze to zip through airport security.

The second compartment at the bottom of the bag is an excellent solution for storing soiled clothes or shoes. Another winning feature is the removable crossbody strap, which offers several carrying options.

The upscale nylon construction is durable yet polished and it can be spot cleaned for when those spills happen. What's more, the detachable leather charm can be monogrammed.

Expert review: "This is one of my go-to handbags for any trip – especially European vacations," says Rachael Hood , a senior travel editor at U.S. News. "The pockets and separate compartment keep everything organized and quick to find. The nylon construction has a silky and upscale feel, and the overall design is versatile for travel or daily use."

Full of organizational details, the Lug Ranger 2 has multiple compartments to keep essentials neatly stowed. The front zippered compartment has a built-in wallet with RFID protection and a key leash. Just above that, you'll find a magnetic-closure slip pocket on the front of the bag for your cellphone, to make answering a call or taking a selfie easy. The main internal compartment can fit your camera, snacks and personal essentials. There are two slip pockets for sunglasses or cords, plus a clear zippered pocket for sunscreen, lotion or other small liquids. The back zippered compartment has two pen slots and is ideal for wipes, a passport or other travel-related items.

Frequently Asked Questions

For European vacations, a lightweight and versatile style is key. Choosing a neutral color like black, brown or a metallic fabrication can help you take the same handbag anywhere from sightseeing to a nice dinner. A built-in wallet, anti-theft and RFID protection, and space for must-carry items are important. You'll also want to decide whether to carry your passport within your purse or have a concealed passport holder you wear under your clothing.

Purses with anti-theft straps are safest. Also, crossbody and belt bags that you wear around your body rather than a shoulder bag can help with safety.

You need to have space for your identification and passport for trips abroad, as well as credit cards, cash (have some easily accessible for tipping or street vendors), medications, prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, hand sanitizer or wipes, and your phone.

How to Protect Your Laptop While Traveling or Commuting?

May 29, 2024

Author: ASUS    Reading time: 6 minutes

These days, laptops accompany us daily, both at home and on the go. That holds true for content creators, professionals who frequently travel for work, students who commute to school with their laptops in their backpacks, or even casual travelers who bring the laptop on trips.

Traveling with electronic devices such as a laptop is not without risks, though.

Below are some tips for protecting your laptop while traveling or commuting.

Table of contents

Use a well-padded laptop bag with a dedicated compartment, keep your bag organized, other protection, shut down completely, protect your laptop from the weather, avoid direct sunlight, ensure safe charging, consider using a laptop lock, protect your data, travel and commute safely.

The most important thing you can do to protect your laptop while traveling is buy a backpack or bag with a dedicated laptop compartment. The laptop compartment should include fairly thick, solid padding on both the outside and inside walls. Also, don’t forget to check the bottom for padding. It’s frequently overlooked, but a crucial consideration.

You also need to make sure the backpack or bag has a compartment large enough for your laptop but not so large that your laptop can move around too much.

Some backpacks come with anti-theft features, such as combination locks on the zipper, cut-proof fabric, or hidden pockets. It may be a good idea to get such a backpack, especially if your laptop is on the higher end.

If you're traveling by plane, it may be a good idea to put the laptop in the carry-on luggage instead of a backpack. But remember: never check in your laptop with luggage.

Putting the laptop in the dedicated compartment of the backpack is one thing. But it’s also how you pack everything else that matters.

If you have a special laptop bag, there is a good chance that there are lots of handy pockets inside that can help you organize your stuff. Take advantage of them to secure other things you need to carry, such as power cords, accessories, and daily necessities. By packing everything correctly, you can prevent peripherals from flying around and potentially damaging your laptop.

You will also want to make sure to keep the laptop separate from everything else — put only the laptop in the laptop compartment.

In addition, don’t pack too fully. If you have trouble zipping up, you may need to give up on some things you want to bring. Otherwise, the pressure from tight packing can damage your laptop surface and in extreme cases even crack the screen.

It may also be a good idea to invest in other laptop protection such as a laptop case or sleeve. Even if your backpack has a dedicated, padded laptop compartment, it may still be a good idea to slip the laptop into a sleeve before placing it in the bag.

Some frequent travelers also like to invest in a display protector with a privacy screen. It can help you avoid annoying scratches and dings on the display surface while at the same time making sure that whatever you see on the screen is for your eyes only.

Finally, a protective film or sticker for the outside lid can also be good, as it will help keep your laptop surfaces looking fresh for longer.

It is tempting to just close the lid of the laptop, putting it in sleep or hibernation mode instead of turning it off when packing — but it's strongly recommended to fully power down the laptop before putting it in the bag, even if it takes longer to turn off and then turn it back on.

In hibernation and sleep mode, your laptop still generates some heat. The problem with this when on the go is, the laptop is enclosed in the bag, so the hot air cannot escape as well. To ensure full safety, it is best to power it down fully.

Electronics and water don’t mix very well. When on the go, it’s crucial to ensure your laptop is safe from rain, snow or other moisture.

To protect your laptop from the weather, one option is getting a water-resistant backpack. Keep in mind that most backpacks or bags only keep away a certain amount of water, so you may want to buy a waterproof backpack sleeve that you can carry with you and put on as needed.

You could also opt for a waterproof laptop sleeve; however, if you use one you have to remember to turn off your laptop completely as such sleeves don’t let anything in or out, including the hot air.

Avoid too much direct exposure to sunlight. This goes for both your laptop and laptop bag. When sunlight reaches the laptop, in extreme cases, it can heat parts to the point of melting, potentially causing irreversible damage.

Leaving your laptop next to the window on a sunny day is another case that should be avoided.

Many users opt for black or otherwise dark-colored bags. As you may know, dark colors absorb more heat; so dark bags can transfer heat to the laptop.

Charging on the go can be risky, especially if you travel internationally to places where the default voltage is different than back home. For this reason, it is recommended to invest in a high-quality power plug converter.

The price difference between a cheap, unreliable converter and a high-quality one may not be too high, but it's surely worth protecting your laptop from unstable power flow or electrical surge-related damage. In addition, you may want to consider a spike guard or surge protector to take protection to a higher level.

Many business laptops as well as higher-end consumer laptops feature a Kensington lock slot. It's a useful feature that allows you to bind your laptop physically to other objects, such as a table, backpack, or even a belt loop in your pants if you wish.

If your laptop features a Kensington lock, it may be a good idea to invest in a combination or key lock and bind it to your backpack or bag when traveling. It is going to make potential theft much more difficult, potentially saving you trouble and cost related to replacing a stolen machine.

There are many ways your data can be compromised when traveling, from having your laptop physically stolen to having compromised connections when accessing public internet connections.

For these reasons, it is crucial to make sure the device is password-protected.

Make sure to back up your data before traveling, too. You can use cloud storage or a physical external drive.

Also, you may want to install reputable antivirus software, and it may be a good idea to encrypt your laptop's drive. Click here to learn how to turn on device encryption from Microsoft.

When connecting to unknown network access points when on the go, it’s a good idea to use a VPN connection.

Finally, special theft recovery software can help you recover your data safely while deleting it from a stolen laptop. You may even consider travel insurance that covers laptop theft!

One last consideration is the laptop itself. If you are a frequent traveler or commute daily with your laptop in the backpack, you'll want to consider reliability and build quality when you purchase a laptop.

Many ASUS laptops are put through tests that meet or exceed U.S. military-grade standards. Such tests take into account both everyday and extreme conditions and help ensure that your laptop is ready to accompany you wherever the road takes you.
